The Big ONE
Tumblr media
Happy Birthday to little Samantha, who turned one on April 20th!
I asked @/artbyainna (IG) to help create artwork to commemorate the special occasion, and I'm simply squealing at the results! While Tobias and Casey are captivated with their little angel, Pietro is all too happy to jump in and get a bit of that cake he's been eyeing all afternoon! I'm just blown away by this!
I wrote a fic highlighting a few moments during Sammy's big day below. I hope you enjoy the sugary sweetness as much as I do!
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Tobias Carrick x Casey Carrick (F!MC) Characters: Vivian Carrick (F!OC), Jordan Carrick (M!OC), Rose and David MacTavish (OCs), the OH gang, and of course, Pietro - the original cat. Rating: Teen Words: 1,700 A/N: @choicesaprilchallenge24 / Kitchen Table
Tumblr media
Standing at her kitchen sink didn't typically usher in so much joy, but then, today wasn't any ordinary day. Casey's heart was full as she peered out the kitchen window into her backyard. It was tiny by suburban standards, but in Boston, it may as well have been an acre. The storms that had been forecasted earlier in the week held off, and the bright sun and azure blue skies provided the perfect canopy for their guests who came to celebrate.
The telltale rattle of the backdoor handle interrupted the silence, and Casey turned to find her husband coming inside. He looked so gorgeous in the fitted pink shirt he bought just for this occasion that she didn't initially catch his expression. Was it bewilderment? Vexation? She couldn't quite make it out.
He reached into the refrigerator and grabbed a bottle of Sam Adams. Popping the cap off, he leaned against the counter and shook his head.
"I can't believe there's a freaking petting zoo in my yard."
Casey chuckled as she closed the distance between them, her head coming to rest on his shoulder as her arms encircled his waist.
"It’s not like you weren’t warned... albeit inadvertently.”
“Still...” he sighed.
“You know, from what I’ve heard, this place was a perpetual petting zoo in the past. Of course, it wasn’t the G-rated type, but even so... this shouldn't be so foreign to you.”
She closed her eyes and pressed closer against him, relishing the way his chest reverberated against her as he laughed.
“While the stories of my past can be a bit on the wild side, they tend to be overexaggerated, my dear.”
Casey squeezed him tighter. “I can’t believe our baby girl is a year old already.”
“I know,” Tobias replied with amazement. “It all went by in a flash.”
“It did,” Casey agreed. “Although, some of the nights felt like they lasted an eternity. Especially in the beginning. God, sometimes I didn’t think I’d survive.”
“You?” Tobias marveled. “No way! You had the whole motherhood thing down pat from the start. You're a natural, babe.”
“A natural?” She laughed. “Are you kidding me? From the moment I found out I was pregnant, I was a hyperventilating mess!" Her hands rubbed along the silky fabric covering his chest, and her voice filled with emotion. “If not for your bright outlook and constant support, I wouldn’t have been able to do it. You’re my rock, T.”
The tender moment was interrupted when the door handle rattled again, and several of their friends stepped inside.
“Jesus!” Jackie groaned. “Do you two ever stop with that lovey-dovey shit?”
“Aw! Leave them alone!” Sienna smiled. “I think they’re adorable.”
“I might be more accepting of that adorable title if it was any random day,” Bryce interjected. “But what the hell are you doing inside with this kissy face crap when you have a freaking petting zoo and bouncy house in your yard?”
“Yeah,” Tobias chuckled. “Ma didn’t read the memo when we said we wanted a simple party with our friends."
“She also didn’t get that none of our friends have children, and Sammy’s too young for friends of her own... I don’t know that we needed all this.”
“Are you kidding?” Bryce gasped in horror. Vivian is a goddess! I’ve been in the bouncy house for the past hour, and that little wallaby out there is now my best friend. You two really need to come out.”
“Oh, I will so be in the bouncy house before this day is over!” Casey enthused.
“And I’ll be there to gleefully record every second,” Tobias winked. “But we’re going to set up to have the cake in here now.”
A peal of laughter wafted in through the open window, and everyone looked outside to see Sammy flying through the air—her face aglow as she giggled with abandon.
“Give her back to me!” Tobias’s brother, Jordan, insisted as Ethan swung the little one around again.
“Sorry,” Ethan responded. “She’s made her position clear. I’m her favorite uncle. You’ll just have to acclimate to being number two, Jordan.”
“Number two,” Bryce blurted as he was about to stick his hand into the nacho dip. “He’s not number two! And Ethan’s not number one! Sorry guys, I have to get out there and reclaim my ground!”
Jackie heaved out a sigh. “I suppose I should go supervise the children.”
“And I’ll make sure she doesn’t hurt anyone,” Sienna said, quick on her friend's heels.
Tobias slid behind Casey, wrapping his strong arms around her as they watched the joyful scene unfolding outside.
“Oh, no! Our parents are getting in on this now,” Casey observed as Tobias kissed her shoulder. “We better go retrieve Sammy before she's more spoiled than she is already."
"Nah," Tobias declined. "She's in very good hands, and I want just one more moment alone with my beautiful wife."
Casey turned around in Tobias's arms and gently kissed him, but he turned that little kiss into one with decidedly more passion.
"Keep that up, and we'll end up with baby number two," she giggled.
"Damn, she's on to my plan," he winked.
~~~~
A short time later, the circus had moved inside as the guests crowded into the family's living room to open gifts.
“I was told we were coming inside for cake,” Bryce pouted.
Vivian, seated next to him, promptly slapped his knee.
“OW!”
“It’s presents before cake, Lahela. Everyone knows that.”
“I don’t think Sammy would mind either way,” he replied but acquiesced when he saw how happy the little girl was ripping into the gift wrap on her presents.
“Look!” Sienna said, tapping Casey’s Mom, Rose, on the shoulder. “She loves the stuffed pony you got her!”
“She does,” Rose beamed. “Although Grandma Vivian supplied the real pony in the yard!”
“Yeah,” Casey’s father, David, laughed. “We’ll have to up our game next year, hon. Vivian here is stealing our thunder.”
“NO!” Tobias and Casey yelled in unison.
“Don’t worry,” Tobias insisted. “My mother is going to be banished from next year’s celebration! We can have some normalcy.”
“Like hell I will be!” she spat as Jordan roared with laughter.
“Please, you have a better chance of Derek Jeter being elected mayor of Boston than you do of Ma missing any of Sammy’s birthdays.”
“That’s right! This fool made me wait almost four decades to be a grandma, I'm not missing any of it now!"
Tobias wrapped his arm around his mother’s shoulders and squeezed her close. “I know you wouldn’t, Ma. And we wouldn't want you to, but... can we celebrate without so many animals next year?”
“I don’t know,” Vivian smirked. “I think it would be wrong not to include your friends.”
~~~~~
A pile of opened gifts sat stacked neatly in the corner as little Pietro played happily with the bits of colorful gift wrap that remained taped to the boxes. But the cat wasn’t the only one excited; after all, it was finally time for CAKE!
“Casey, you look great!” Jordan stated. “But, Tobias, I need you to move a bit to the right.”
“For God's sake,” Tobias groused. “Can you just take the picture already?"
“Can we start singing?” Vivian asked. "I want to sing to my grandbaby."
“As soon as I get this picture,” Jordan replied. “All right! Casey, Tobias... perfect! Now, everyone, help me get Sammy to look this way.”
Everyone gathered behind Jordan, making faces, clapping their hands, and doing all they could to get the precious little girl to look their way. But Sammy only had eyes for one thing... the fluffy pink birthday cake that was just outside of her reach. That is until her feline best friend hopped on the table, stealing her attention and leaving her squealing with delight.
Casey lifted him, placing him gently back on the floor. “Not on the table, Pietro.”
“Yeah!” Jackie replied smugly. “No cake for you.”
The cat hissed at his nemesis as the clamoring to get Sammy to look at the camera continued.
“Oh, for the love of God,” Tobias bewailed. “Can you just take the picture!”
“I sure can,” Jordan nodded. “On the count of three! One... two... three!”
But just as her uncle snapped the photo, Sammy lurched forward and grabbed a fistful of the cotton candy colored icing, and when Tobias attempted to intervene, he ended up with a tiny fistful of sticky, sugary goodness splattered onto his face. A family photo that would be celebrated for generations to come was born.
Beaming, Tobias lifted Sammy off Casey’s lap as her chubby little hands mashed the icing deeper into her father’s beard.
Laughing, Casey pulled her phone out of her pocket to snap some shots of her own. “Our little girl has you wrapped around her finger, T!”
Tobias reached over and pulled Casey close; the sticky icing became a family affair when he kissed her cheek. “She sure does. Just like her, Momma!”
Amidst all the chaos, Pietro saw an opportunity, and he took it! Leaping onto the table, he stuck his paws into the cake and delighted in his sugary bonanza until Casey spotted him out of the corner of her eye.
“Pietro! No!” she hollered as Jackie, the only one who had seen the cat on the table, broke out laughing.
“You saw him and didn’t rat him out?” Casey teased. "What's happened to you?"
Jackie merely shrugged. “You have to admire him. He wanted something, saw an opening, and took it. I’m not about to turn him in for that.”
"Are you and that cat... bonding?" Casey asked.
"I guess Sammy's birthday is capable of miracles."
~~~~~
Hours later, after the final guest had gone home, Casey and Tobias snuggled together on the couch. Sammy slept in her playpen just feet away while Pierto kept a protective watch over her. Despite being exhausted, the proud parents couldn’t wipe the grins off their faces.
“This was such a great day,” Casey smiled. “I knew it would be, but it exceeded all expectations.”
“It was a really great day,” Tobias agreed. “And I think Ma only violated three town ordinances by insisting a wallaby was included in the petting zoo."
“She didn’t break any ordinances,” Casey laughed, her eyes suddenly going wide. “At least, not any that we know of.”
“Well, if she did, we successfully evaded charges, and that's all I can ask for."
“Mmmm,” Casey hummed, snuggling closer to him. “So, do you still want to add another Carrick to all this craziness?”
Tobias sat up, his interest piqued. “Damn straight, I do. Honestly, I want our girls to be close together. Jordan and I had a big age difference, and I’d like Sammy to grow up with her sister, you know?”
“Tobias,” Casey chuckled. “You know we have no way of knowing if we'd have another girl!”
His eyes lit up, and that little dimple Casey found so irresistible took center stage. “Oh, yes, I do. Now the big question... are you ready to have bambina number two?”
Casey sunk back into the fluffy couch cushions with a smile. “Soon? Maybe we can start trying around the end of summer. You know, it might not happen right away, but if we start then, maybe Sammy can have a little sister... or brother... by the end of next year. What do you say?"
“First, sister,” Tobias grinned. “And it will happen right away. Look at how fast it happened with Sammy.”
“Babe, we weren’t planning on Sammy.”
“Exactly,” Tobias grinned, holding Casey close. "I work that damn well when we weren't even trying... you just wait until we are."
Sammy made a funny little noise, and when Mom and Dad realized she was just having a happy dream, they returned to holding each other close.
"Well, I feel a lot better right now than I did a year ago at this time," Casey stated. "I mean, a day of family and friends is a cakewalk next to labor and delivery."
"Yet, you're willing to do it again," Tobias chuckled.
"Yeah, I think I'll make it through," she smiled. "I love our little family, T."
"So do I," he said with a kiss on her forehead. "And I love you."
~~~~~
That's some serious sweetness here, my friends! I hope you enjoyed it... Pietro sure did!

Pairing: Bryce x Olivia , Ethan x Merida (@lilyoffandoms), Tobias x Casey (@jerzwriter)
Book: Open Heart
Word Count: >700
Rating/Warnings: general
Synopsis: Olivia, Merida, and Casey decide to decorate the Diagnostic Office.
Tumblr media
The Diagnostic Office buzzed with festive energy as Olivia, Casey, and Merida decorated Ethan's office with holiday cheer. The trio, wearing holiday sweaters and festive headbands, worked diligently, preparing a surprise for their significant others. Boxes of decorations lay scattered across the room. In the center of the space lay a jumbled mess of tangled lights.
Casey grappled with the relentless knots in the string lights, muttering under her breath. The more of the knots she freed, the more the lights seemed to conspire, weaving her into their tangled web.
Merida offered her assistance, teasing her friend playfully. "Making friends with the lights, Casey? Or are they plotting a holiday takeover?"
"They seem a formidable foe," Olivia chimed in, giggling as she watched Casey try to unravel a particularly tangled section.
"Ugh! I feel like neurosurgery would be easier than this," Casey joked, tediously separating the stubbornly intertwined wires.
Olivia added miniature ornaments to the long strands of garlands strewn around the rooms, her eyes sparkling with joy. "I can't wait to see their faces when they walk in." She clapped her hands enthusiastically, unable to contain her excitement.
"Finally!" Casey jumped up, pumping her hands in the air in victory. She quickly gathered the lights, placing them in Olivia's arms. "They're all yours!"
"My pleasure!" Olivia took the lights, holding them up in front of her, deciding on their perfect placement.
A mischievous spark flickered in Casey's eyes as she caught Merida's attention. "Let's add a little extra surprise." She produced a small sprig of mistletoe from her bag.
Merida's brow arched. "Do you and Tobias really need another reason to be all over each other?"
"Oh, it's not for me," Casey teased, winking toward Merida. "I think we can all agree that a certain diagnostician would benefit from letting loose a little bit."
"I'm not sure he'll share your sentiment, but I'm willing to risk it. Who knows, maybe we'll see our own Christmas miracle," Merida retorted.
With stealthy precision, they positioned the mistletoe above the office doorway, chuckling at the playful addition to the festive decor.
The two stood beneath it, making sure it was safely secured, and somewhat out of sight.
Merida's gaze shifted between the decor and Casey. "If this doesn't get Ethan's attention, I'm sure I could find someone else to take advantage of it with?"
Casey shrugged coyly, curious by the prospect, "And, perhaps also even if he does!"
As the three friends finished up, the room transformed into a cozy haven adorned with twinkling lights and festive cheer.
Just then, the door swung open, and Bryce, Ethan, and Tobias entered, greeted by the sight of the dazzlingly decorated office. Their eyes widened in surprise and appreciation, well, at least for two of them.
“It looks like Santa threw up in here," Ethan grumbled.
"It's festive," Tobias quickly defended, admiring the decorations. "You gotta lighten up, Scrooge."
"I wish someone would decorate the O.R. like this," Bryce added gleefully.
"You do realize that none of this is sterile," Ethan interrupted. “So unless you plan to risk your patients lives, you do not wish someone to decorate the O.R.”
"Ignore him," Bryce wrapped his arms around Olivia, pressing a kiss to the top of her head. "It's beautiful."
Ethan sighed, rubbing the space between his brows. He was truly outnumbered. He always was, but sometimes he had Olivia on his side. Not this time. “...It can stay," he mumbled reluctantly.
"It really wasn't an option," Casey smirked.
Ethan stepped further into his office, but his movements were halted.
"Not so fast—" Merida sauntered forward, pressing Ethan back under the doorway once more. "I believe you owe me a kiss."
"That's a juvenile tradition," he protested.
"Are you refusing? You know that's bad luck."
"You know I don't believe in luck."
Merida shook her head; she wanted to scold him but this was who he was, and she loved him for it. Her fingers flirted with his tie a moment, before she pulled him down to her, her lips crashing against his.
Their embrace was met by whistles and howls from their friends. The pair ignored them, their lingering kiss enduring.
Casey turned to Tobias, her voice soft, "Merry Christmas." Her lips met his tenderly.
Olivia leaned further into Bryce, letting the warmth and comfort of his embrace engulf her as she marveled at the beautiful lights and displays surrounding them.
Their jobs weren't always easy, and sometimes things could seem bleak, but right now, surrounded by their friends and such a cheerful display, everything seemed just right.

A few weeks ago…
Luna
The phone rang somewhere in the house while I was in the middle of an art project.
A few seconds later I heard footsteps and when I turned around I saw Bryce appear in the doorway, handing me my phone.
”Who is it?“ I asked and turned to my canvas again.
”No idea some fancy talking guy said he wanted to talk to you.“
”Is he sure he got the right person?“ ”Beats me.“
I furrowed my brow and pushed my dark blonde hair out of my face and accidentally got some teal paint in my hair. Good thing it’ll wash out.
”Hello?“ I wiped my paint covered fingers on a cloth I kept handy when I painted.
”Am I speaking to Ms. Luna Auclair?“ A deep voice with a slight accent can be heard from the other end.
”Yes. And who is this?“ I put the phone on speaker and got up slowly as I took my brushes to the sink to wash them.
”My name is Bertrand Beaumont from House Beaumont in Cordonia. I’m sure you’ve heard of me.“
”Hmm. Sorry doesn’t ring a bell.“ I say not able to resist teasing him. Bryce snickered next to me.
”You’re so mean.“ He mouthed, and I kissed his stubbled cheek, making him smile.
I turned back to the conversation, putting Bertrand out of his misery. Poor guy must’ve thought the worst of me.
”I’m just kidding Mr. Beaumont I know who you are. So what can I do for you?“ I turned off the faucet and put my paint brushes upside down so they could dry.
”I could use your help.“ He sounded hesitant, which made me instantly curious.
”Help with what?“
”We have our PR firm that we founded, and we’re trying to give some people a better public image.“ I took my phone into my hand.
”What does that have to do with me? I’m not a PR person. I have a bachelor's degree in fine arts, and I’m currently teaching art at the University of Hawaii.“
I took a look at my half-finished painting sitting on the easel, and decided to let the painting dry for now. I’ll keep working on it later.
When I closed the door Bryce and I walked towards the backyard, where we sat down in our beach chairs, while Bertrand’s voice kept coming out of the speaker.
”I’m very well aware. But I know you’re someone who’s skilled as an artist. And I know you think outside the box, and that’s exactly what we need.“
”I will need more information than that if you want my help.“ I could hear some commotion before another voice replaced Bertrand's.
”Luna right? Hi I’m Maxwell, Bertrand’s brother. Look, my brother's social skills suck sometimes. I have the cliff notes version if you want it?“
”Um…sure fire away.“
”Alright. A few weeks ago there was a bit of an…let’s call it an incident. Tobias Carrick was caught making out with the daughter of one of the hospital directors of Mass Kenmore. Someone apparently posted it online. Of course, it’s gone viral. The damage is done and he could get fired. Because apparently it’s unethical.“
”Poor Tobias. He’s a good friend of me and my fiancé Bryce so he has our sympathies especially since this a massive violation of their privacy to put the video online. I’m really sorry he’s going through that.“
I looked at Bryce who was as surprised as me to hear about this.
”Both Bertrand and I feel terrible, because Tobias seems like such a great guy and then for someone to swoop in and destroy his image like that. This is actually where you come into play. Let’s just say we’ve tried other people to fix his image, but it didn’t work.“
”Like I told your brother, I’m not a PR person. I have zero experience.“
”That’s not what we’re looking for. I’m talking about your other accolades. You’re not only one of the youngest people to finish your bachelor degree, but one where all your professors had only glowing compliments for you. You also published your own book, called Kala Kala - Overcoming anxiety with the help of art. Very nice read. I loved it, it’s also super colorful by the way. Not only do you teach art at the senior center, you’re an active member at arts on the fence, a non-profit organization in Honolulu, Hawaii. You love malasdas and are allergic to ginger. Should I continue? I’ve got more.“
”I…no…that’s fine. But how did you find out that much about me? Not everything is available online.“ I was wondering how the hell they got my phone number, and all the things in my bio Maxwell just mentioned. Why would they even be interested in seeking out my help?
”Let’s say a mutual, redhead found out about it. She bought some of your art, and she said you could be a good fit. I think the phrase »ovaries of steel« was mentioned.“
I gasped in awe.
”You don’t mean Olivia Nevrakis do you? Because then I’m so in. I’d love to meet her. And of course help out in any way I can.“
I heard a whoop and a sigh.
”Is that a yes?“ Maxwell asked unsure.
”Hold on a sec.“ I muted the conversation.
”What do you think B?“ I asked Bryce and I could see his beautiful face, that I could sketch every single day and not get tired of looking at.
”I mean I’m sorry Tobias is going through this. He’s our friend, but are you sure you’re up for it?“ His brown eyes were filled with worry as he gently caressed my stomach.
”I’ll be fine. Women have gotten pregnant before and have worked until they’ve given birth.“ I said with more conviction than I felt right now.
”I know you’re trying to be strong but okay. If you’re really sure, then I’m okay with it, but the smallest hitch, and we’re going back home. And don’t think of going alone. I don’t care who they are. You’re my fiancé and the mother of my kids. So they better believe I’ll be going with you.“
”I love your protective mode.“
”Out of all the things I’ve said, that’s what you focused on?“
I grinned and then I unmuted the conversation.
”Maxwell? I’m in.“
”Thanks Luna. I promise you won’t regret it.“
”I better don’t. Otherwise, you’ll hear me yell at you.“
Maxwell chuckled.
”You got it. There’ll be a private jet to pick you up. I’ll send you the arrival date. Can’t wait to meet you. From the pictures I’ve seen, you're really beautiful.“
”Careful there Casanova.“ Bryce chimed in, and I grinned as I pushed my hand through his soft brown hair, making him relax.
”No worries, I know she’s taken. We’ll see you soon in Cordonia, bye.“
Before I could say anything else the phone call ended. Bryce and I just stared at the phone and then laughed at how surreal the situation was.
Who would’ve thought I’d meet members of House Beaumont?
Though it looked as if a new adventure was coming our way.
Tumblr media
5 days later
So here I was on day five not making any kind of improvement whatsoever.
I’ve tried talking to Tobias, but nothing worked to get through to him.
He acted as if nothing was wrong and there’s no part where he could lose his job. He’s been painted as the bad guy but doesn’t seem to care.
I got up this morning, let Bryce sleep in a little, as I went down to the pool to figure out a new strategy for how to fix this mess.
That’s when I saw Tobias flirting with a woman by the pool.
You’ve got to be kidding me. I’m trying to repair his image, and he’s out here flirting? Oh, hell no!
”Having fun?“ I asked when I stood next to him. Tobias turned his light green eyes to me, focusing on me rather than the woman he was just talking to a minute ago.
As if he wasn’t already good-looking enough, the smile he threw my way made his face even more beautiful.
”Good morning to you too, gorgeous.“
”Sorry buddy but that charm is wasted on me. I’m engaged and I’m expecting.“
”Does that mean I can’t flirt with you?“ Tobias smirked.
”You can. But it won’t have any effect.“ I said and took a towel from the rack and threw it at him.
”Get dressed.“ I said, and he took the towel, but didn't move. He threw an apologetic smile at the woman who was sitting next to him. She slipped him a small piece of paper and left. He watched her walk away and nodded his head in appreciation.
I cleared my throat, and he turned his gaze on me.
”Let me guess you have another glorious idea how to restore my image?“
”You can call it that. You have 10 minutes to get dressed and be back.“
”Let’s make it 15 alright?“ Tobias laughed.
”Now it’s 10 minutes.“
”Does that tone ever work on Bryce?“
”I’m not going to repeat myself.“
”Now you sound like a school teacher.“ He replied but got up. That’s progress I guess.
”Look, I was assigned to give you some sort of glowing makeover for your reputation. If you don’t want it? Fine. I have better things to do.“
Tobias stared back at me, his charm gone.
”Like what? Be all sunshiny? No offense, but don’t you ever have a bad day or get angry? In all the time you’ve been here you’re always smiling and never losing your cool. You’re more like a robot.“
His comment hit me more than I thought it would, so I got up in his face. Which is hard since he’s taller than me, but I made it work.
”Don’t mistake my bubbly personality for being just that. There’s a lot more to my character and my personality than being happy and positive. You don’t know me that well if your words are any indication.“
His eyes widened for a fraction.
”My bad.“
”And that was lesson number 12.“
Tobias rolled his eyes.
”What I don’t get is why they even assigned you to me? We’re polar opposites.“
”You know what’s interesting? In our whole convos, you’ve avoided talking about this whole incident that led up to this moment right now. You keep acting as if you don’t care, and it’s no concern of yours. But you avoid talking about the core problem.“
Tobias crossed his arm.
”Please enlighten me.“
”You’re not a bad guy. But you’d rather have people believe you’re a dick then let them think you have a heart. That’s interesting.“
”Are you done psychoanalyzing me?“ His voice sounded more and more irritated.
”If you think that we’re done? Then you don’t know me at all. We’re just getting started. Get dressed. And don’t be late. If you’re not down in 5 minutes I’m leaving. So dealers choice.“
”Fine, I'll go get dressed. Doesn’t mean this conversation is over.“
”Now it’s 9 minutes.“ I said and watched him quicken his steps while I sat down and enjoyed the nice view of the ocean.
Tumblr media
10 minutes later…
”What is this place?“ He asked without really seeming to pay attention.
”It’s called a room. With walls and windows. And sometimes there’s even a door.“
He snickered.
”I know what a room is. I meant what are we doing in this room?“ He looked at all the cans of paint I had people assemble for this exercise.
”That’s the fun part. Team building exercise. It’s also pregnancy safe, which is a plus.“ I grinned, but he just looked at me and didn't reply.
”The point of this exercise is to let go of past hurts. Look at it this way, you can just let all your anger out. I like to call it angry painting.“
I take a can of paint, open it and see the color coral crush. I took it and threw some at the wall.
Tobias regarded me and I handed him another can, he took but stared at it as if it’s been touched by Medusa herself.
”Do you even know how to get angry?“ He looked at me skeptically as he kept holding the pint can in his hands.
”Excuse me?“
He opened the can of paint and a soft canary yellow joined the coral crush tone on the wall.
”Look, all you’ve said is how I have a heart and I don’t let others see it. But you don’t even know me. How do you expect me to trust you?“
”Is this finally the heart-to-heart you’re giving me? One that the others failed to get?“
”Maybe it wasn’t the best idea to partner up.“ He set the can down and was about to walk away.
”Giving up so soon? That’s a shame.“
”What?“ He stopped and slowly turned my way.
”I know you’re the type of guy who likes to do things rather than sit around and talk.“
”You’ve been paying attention? I’m shocked. Everybody knows I’m competitive, that's not a secret.“
”Of course I’ve been paying attention. You know I have bad days and angry moments too. I’m not just some blonde bimbo, who can’t count to three. I notice a lot more than people think.“
”Such as?“ He raised his eyebrows daringly as he leaned against the door frame.
”When you get nervous you bite your lip and clench your left fist. Which would lead me to believe you are left-handed.“
I kept going.
”Whenever I ask you a personal question or try to tackle the issue, you laugh it off, meaning you’re not ready to talk to me or improve your image. You think it’s fine and it doesn't need any polishing. If people don’t like you or think you’re a dick that’s on them.“
Tobias doesn’t say anything.
”I’d wager you’re someone who likes to do things his way or the highway. You don’t play well with others because you like to be in control. It’s hard for you to give anyone even an ounce of your trust because you believe trust is earned. You said it yourself I don’t know much about you, so why should you trust me? So did I get any of that right?“
Tobias didn’t say anything. He didn’t even move a muscle.
”Your silence indicates I got something right.“
”Even if you did get it right, it doesn’t mean I need your help.“
”So what you’d let your image get destroyed and let others decide on the narrative rather than trying to fix it? That doesn’t sound like the Tobias I got to know.“
”I can’t control what people think.“
”Maybe not. But you can let them see that there’s more to you. Do you know what I see right now?“
”What?“
”Someone who’s been hurt in the past, and now you’re hurt again. But you’re trying so hard to bury those feelings that you’re drowning in them.“
”Sounds like a therapy session.“ He mumbled.
”Art is therapy. Did you know I basically got bullied out of the art gallery I worked at in Boston?“
He shook his head. By the look in his eyes I could tell I got his attention.
”I had no idea, but I’m sorry to hear that. Why did you get fired?“
”I quit. I’ve been struggling with anxiety for years. And they’ve seen me as someone they can demean and push around. My voice was snuffed out. I’ve always seen art as freedom, choosing to make art work for you. Art has helped me find an outlet, find my voice. Let me be creative and put paint on a canvas when I can’t name my own feelings.“
He rubbed his neck as if uncomfortable by my word vomit.
”I had no idea. And I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to be a dick. I just…“
”You needed to vent so you let it out on me. I get it. We all lash out when we’re angry. Usually at the people we’re close to.“
”But you seem so calm and composed. You and Bryce never even fight. You’re so perfect.“
I threw my head back and let out a laugh. Making it echo from the walls.
I turned back to Tobias who was looking at me as if I grew another head.
”Do you really believe that? Of course Bryce and I fight. We have disagreements all the time. But we’ve learned how to handle them. Even if we don’t speak to each other for days, it doesn't mean we hate each other. But it means hey I need space I’ll talk when I’ve cooled off. We found our rhythm. We love and understand each other.“
He sighed and sat down, leaning on the wall that was just covered with paint, he winced when he realized it, but he didn’t sit down somewhere else.
”What a mess I’ve created, but maybe you’re right.“
”I must have a fever, or did you just say I’m right?“ I grinned and he smiled back.
”No you heard me correctly. You’re right. I’m scared to end up alone. So that’s why I pushed Chloe away. The woman from the video. We’ve gotten pretty close, and I don't know I panicked. I mean whoever took the video had no right to do that, but I guess people judge me and say how I’m sleeping with her because I’d like to get to the top. But that’s not true. I like the job I have. I have no desire to work in an office. I love working with patients. Hearing them tell me what’s wrong and finding a way to make things better for them.“
”Could it be that you’re scared you won’t measure up? Wanting to prove others wrong? You’d rather be the one who ends a relationship rather than the one who gets his heart broken?“
”Yes to all of the above.“ He nodded.
”Alright. That’s something we can work on.“ I said with renewed energy.
”How? We can’t just fix this mess in a matter of days.“
I smiled softly at him.
”No. But we can slowly build towards improving. You know there is a Hawaiian proverb my grandma always uses: A’ Ohe Pu’u Ki’eki’e Ke Ho’a’o ‘Ia e Pi’i.“
”Uhh…meaning?“ He asked.
”No cliff is so tall it cannot be climbed.“
”I kinda like that phrase.“ He said thoughtfully.
”Yeah it’s beautiful. You know what else? You’re not broken. It just means you haven’t figured out the right formula. I don’t want to turn you into someone you’re not. I just want you to realize that if you keep pushing people away who’d like to be in your life you’ll end up all alone. And that’s not what I want for you. You’re smart, funny and good-looking. Don’t let it go to waste.“
Tobias shook his head as grinned at me.
”You know? Now I understand why Bryce fell for you.“
I grinned at him.
”I told you so. There’s more to me than you might think.“
”I can see that. Also, please tell me I’m not the only one you boss around. At least tell me you do that to Bryce too.“
”Oh trust me I do.“ I laughed again because it felt as if we reached a good point. And I’m glad I could get him to open up.
I can see a big grin forming on Tobias face and I already knew there’s something snarky coming.
”Also I did get something right on the first try.“ He grinned.
”Let me guess how to do sex right.“ I sighed.
”No. It was actually how to pick friends. Maybe after we solve this mess I can try and restore some of my friendships.“
”You got this Carrick.“ I slapped his arm.
”Now you sound like Lahela.“
I winked at him.
”Now what?“ He asked after getting up.
”Now we slowly improve your image. With me by your side things can only get better.“ He laughed out loud and we continued to throw paint at the wall. We might’ve not solved everything, but we’re getting there.

(Dr. Tobias Carrick x F!MC *Chris Valentine) (Dr. Ethan Ramsey x F!MC*Chris Valentine) (Dr. Bryce Lahela x F!MC*Chris Valentine) in an Open Heart Fan fiction.
Masterlist
A/N Sorry for taking so long to post. My health decided to do some wild things since the last post on top of the writer's block just having a field day with this storyline 😑 Anyway, we'll pick up where the last chapter left off.
Chapter 2
Chris slowly came awake. Though she knew in an instant that she wasn't in her own bedroom, the massive hangover she was currently under caused her to not really care where she was. Pulling what had to be some of the softest sheets she'd ever felt up over her face, she began to try and remember what happened the night before.
Flashes of her celebration at Donahue's flickered through her mind. Groaning over not only her actions with drinking way too much, she remembered what happened with Ethan.
Her eyes shot open.
Oh no. Did I go home with Ethan?
Peeking out from under the covers, she tried to discern the furniture around her.
Unless Ethan had done a major renovation since the last time she'd been in his apartment and had moved to a lower floor, she knew she wasn't in his place.
Chris clutched her head.
I know I'm not at Bryce's either. He wouldn't have brought me to his place with Kikei there.
She softly gasped.
Don't tell me I went home with a stranger!
Chris kicked the covers back and breathed easier to see she was still fully dressed. There was no indication that anyone had slept beside her. She did a quick examination of her body and knew she hadn't had sex.
Where am I?
She yanked the covers up when the bedroom door opened.
Tobias grinned at her.
"You're awake."
Chris gaped at him. "I went home with you!?"
He chuckled as he walked into the room.
"You demanded that I bring you to my place."
"Oh lord." Chris buried her head in her hands. Smoothing back her tousled hair, she looked up at him. "I'm so sorry."
He shrugged it off as not a big deal and sat down at the foot of the bed.
"I didn't..." Chris took a deep breath. "I didn't push myself on you, did I?"
Before he could respond, she shook her head.
"Of course I bloody well did. Why else would I be in your home?" She rubbed her hands over her face in an attempt to clear the cobwebs. "You should have given me back to my roommates. Then you wouldn't--"
"Hey!" He chuckled once more. "Easy there, Valentine. Normally, a woman in your condition would not be in my home." He patted her leg. "But, um, you were adamant that your doctor take you to his home."
"My doctor?" Her brow furrowed as she tried to remember the events of the previous night.
He laughed at her confused expression.
"Yeah, Ethan was not too thrilled when you declared I was not only your doctor but also the only doctor you trusted."
Her eyes widened.
What else did I do last night?
"You also told your roommates that you needed me to take you home since you had some medical concerns."
She vaguely remembered talking to Sienna.
"Anyway, I was going to actually take you back to your apartment after your friends left." He explained. "When I checked your wallet for a driver's license--"
"You saw that I still had my I.D. from Inverness." She finished with a groan.
"As much as I wanted to get you safely home, I wasn't quite up for the journey to Scotland." He teased.
Chris flopped back on the pillows with her arm draped over her eyes. This was quite possibly the most embarrassing moment of her life.
She then remembered she should be at work.
"What time is it?!" She sat up too quickly and immediately regretted such a rash action.
"Half past two." Tobias told her.
"Half past--" She scrambled out of bed.
"Whoa!" Tobias stopped her. "Where are you going?"
"I'm late!" She searched in vain for her shoes. "My shift at the hospital started hours ago!"
"Chris." He placed his hands on her shoulders. "I called Ethan this morning and told him you weren't coming in."
"You did what?" Chris gaped at him. "Why?"
"As your physician," he winked at her, "I realized that I never gave you the all clear to return to work. Plus given how many drinks you had last night, I knew you wouldn't be in any condition to help your patients."
"Oh." She sank back down on the bed.
Tobias sat down next to her. He studied her worried profile in silence for a few seconds.
"Hey?" He nudged her with his shoulder. "Why don't you take a shower while I see about lunch?" He nudged her again. "Or breakfast for you?"
Chris snorted back a laugh. "Yes, please feed me after I forced my drunk self into your home."
Tobias grinned at her. "You can force yourself on me anytime."
She burst out laughing then gave him a playful shove.
He got to his feet to open a nearby closet.
"My sisters-in law leave clothes here so they don't have to pack so much when they come for a visit." He explained. "See if there's something of theirs that might do for now."
"I appreciate it," Chris began "but I shouldn't impose on you any--"
"You're not." He went into the guest bathroom to start the shower. "Plus, I insist you stay until I know you're okay."
With a smile that made her heart flip, he left her alone.
Twenty minutes later, Chris found herself clean, dressed in leggings that were too short and in what was supposed to be an oversized sweater, yet just barely went past her waist. She'd finally found a pair of wooly socks to keep her always cold feet warm and began to make her way downstairs, admiring Tobias's townhome along the way.
She paused in the hallway to discern just where her host was.
Tobias called out from a room farther to her left.
"I'm in here, Chris!"
She followed the sound of his voice, pausing at how inviting his kitchen was. Though modern, the warm colors he'd chosen for the walls, decor, and cushions somehow worked. It should have clashed, yet she found herself thinking of her grandparents' home. They had been given all new appliances a couple of years ago. The silver, sleek look met the older bread box, flower towels, and ruffled cushions and soon settled into a hodgepodge that they all ended up loving.
It made her homesick to sit down at Tobias's table.
"Coffee?" He asked from behind the counter.
"Please." Chris rubbed her forehead in an effort to clear the fog she was still slightly under.
"How do you take it?" He poured her a cup.
"Lots of cream and lots of sugar." She mumbled.
"How much is a lot?"
"More than true coffee aficionados can tolerate." She responded.
"This I have to see." Tobias teased.
He brought over the pot of coffee along with cream and sugar.
Chris blushed under his attention as she prepared her cup. Once she was finished, the rich black was replaced with a light beige color.
Tobias chuckled. "I bet you've gotten more speeches on your coffee from Ethan than you have medicine."
"You'd win that bet." Chris took a long sip, sighing in pleasure. "Don't tell me you're a coffee snob too?"
"I'm a to each their own coffee drinker." He teased. "Who am I to judge when I'll drink it any way someone prepares it? Though I will admit, I like mine with a little less cream than you do."
Chris rolled her eyes. "What about the sugar?"
Tobias leaned closer to her. "Who doesn't love something sweet?"
Having him close enough where she could see the flecks of gold in those amazing hazel eyes of his caused Chris to become momentarily tongue-tied.
His cocky smile creeped up at seeing her like this.
His attention next drifted over her face, taking in the strawberries and cream complexion he found rather cute. Her nose had a slight tilt that more than hinted at a stubbornness he'd been witnessed to on previous occasions. Her eyes held such emotion. Those gray eyes of hers could make a man hesitate for fear of wounding her.
How does Ethan keep it professional, he wondered. I don't know what I would do if the positions were reversed and she worked closely with me.
"So?" He cleared his throat and settled back in his chair. "Want to talk about last night?"
Chris's nose wrinkled at the very mention of it.
Tobias eyed her over the rim of his coffee cup. "You don't strike me as the kind of person who regularly gets drunk."
"Because I don't." She took another sip of coffee. "It was stupid of me to drink that much."
"What happened?" He prodded. "One minute, you seemed happy then the next you were downing drinks like you'd seen a ghost or something."
She snorted. If he only knew how right he was. There was nothing worse than a visit from the Ghost of Relationships Past.
Chris tried to avoid his question by focusing on her fork picking at the scrambled eggs on her plate.
Tobias wasn't going to let this go. If Chris really did consider him her doctor then he was going to make sure she was not only physically well after the attack but also emotionally. They were becoming friends after all. Weren't friends supposed to share problems?
He placed his hand on hers, causing the fork to slip from her grasp and clatter onto the plate.
Chris swallowed a tad hard before lifting her eyes back to his.
Tobias searched her steady, vulnerable gaze and gentled his tone.
"What's wrong, Chris?"
Unshed tears began to fill her eyes.
"I--I don't..." she sucked in a deep breath before burying her face in her hands.
Tobias got up and knelt by her chair. He gently brushed back her damp hair. As much as he wanted to demand she talk to him, he knew he could only wait and let it be her decision.
"I'm sorry." She lowered her hands.
"No need to apologize." He tucked her hair behind her ear. "If you don't want to talk about it, we--"
"I don't but I know I should." She took another deep breath. "It's a long story."
"Good thing it's my day off of work." He teased in the hopes of seeing her smile again.
Her lips curved briefly before falling once more. "I guess I should start at the beginning."
Tobias returned to his chair. He remained silent as Chris poured out everything that occurred since she first arrived at Edenbrook. There were many times he wanted to question her and express shock as she told him about her odd relationships with Ethan and Bryce.
Ethan hadn't been able to resist her after all, he thought to himself.
"And then Ethan pulled me away last night and it all began again." She explained. "After he kissed me and wouldn't say what we were, I just needed an escape. Not from him, but I needed to get away from myself."
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"How can I go on in life in the same, exact, frustrating manner after being given a second chance?" She looked up at Tobias. "I should be making sure that nothing is wasted with this time I've been given, right?"
Tobias slowly nodded. "I think you shouldn't waste your time on anyone who doesn't give you what you deserve."
"Exactly!" Her breath hitched. "If I'm willing to give everything to someone, I should expect he give the same to me."
She wiped her tears away with the back of her hand.
"I know some say you should love without expecting anything in return." Her eyes searched his for understanding. "But I tried that and ended up miserable. I can't be that person again. I won't! It takes so much out of me and gives me nothing but mere crumbs to live on."
Tobias opened his mouth to reassure her again, only to fall silent when she continued.
"But what if I miss out? What if Ethan or Bryce is the one? What if I ruin what could be the relationship that will eventually give me what my heart needs? Am I suppose to fall back into what they want in case--"
"Whoa." He took her hands in his. "Easy there, Valentine. You're going down a rabbit hole of what if's."
"I know." She admitted. "That's all I do. I start off saying I won't put myself through this over and over and yet turn around and doubt my decision. I always end up here, questioning whether or not I should change anything."
Chris propped her chin on her fist while staring out of the kitchen's bay window.
"I am drowning in doubt." She admitted. "I am certain in everything I do in life except for love." She refocused on Tobias. "I don't know how to fix this."
Tobias didn't either. If she was suffering from the attack either physically or mentally, he'd have known exactly what to do. When it came to matters of the heart, he knew he was the last person who should give advice.
"The only thing I can recommend," he began a bit hesitantly, "is to only accept what makes you happy."
He took her hand once more. "As a friend of yours, I don't believe you should settle for anything less than what you want."
"That's what Sienna's been telling me for a while now." Chris mumbled.
"See? How can you ignore the advice coming from two different people?" He prodded.
Chris's lips quirked into a brief smile. "You and Sienna couldn't be any more different."
"It's a sign that it's the right thing to do." He argued. "You should tell Ethan and Bryce."
"Tell them?" Chris murmured. "You mean--"
"Tell them exactly what you want, what you expect, and see if they can step up and be that for you." Tobias told her. "Keeping it to yourself is only making you miserable. Plus, if they honestly don't know what you're wanting, how can they give it to you?"
Chris slowly nodded. She had tried to hint and kinda explain what she wanted each time with Ethan, but she'd never talked to him seriously about it. With Bryce, she kept things light and fun. Perhaps she was more responsible for her unhappiness than she originally thought.
"You know what you need?" He relaxed back in his chair. "You need a night out."
Chris blinked. "Isn't that what I did last night?"
"No, that was a celebration. You need a night out with no expectations, no questionable relationships, and no drunken escapes."
Tobias grinned at her. "You took me to your hangout. It's only fair you visit mine."
She began to laugh. "You sure you trust me to see where you love to go?"
"I guess I do." He murmured, grinning even more. "How bout it, Chris?"
"I really should get some sleep." She argued halfheartedly. "I have work in the morning."
"No, you don't." He reminded her. "Remember, I haven't given you the all clear yet."
Chris rolled her eyes over that.
"We both know I'm fine to go back to work."
"I don't." He laced his fingers behind his head to stretch. "You'll have to schedule an appointment with me for a final checkup." He winked at her. "Nice try, but there's no getting out of tonight."
Chris motioned to herself. "I don't have anything to wear."
"I'll take you by your place to change on the way." Tobias got up to clear their plates. "What do you say?"
Seeing no way out of this and was a little curious over where he went to unwind, she decided to give in. Chris admitted to herself that having a drink somewhere without Ethan or Bryce to distract her might be just the change she needed.
Plus, it might help her get the courage up to talk to them.
"If my doctor insists, -" Chris mumbled.
"I do." Tobias interrupted
"Then, I'd love to."

Work was going well. Tobias slotted in on the team well. He was duly impressed with the skill of Casey. He was relieved that she appeared to be recovering from the effects of the attack. Most of the antidote research was going to be done out of Edenbrook and he was on that project. Moving to Edenbrook meant giving up the Stephanie Hill research but they were in very capable hands.
Things with him and Ethan were going great also. Both men had always missed their friendship but now that they were friends again, how much they had missed had become apparent.
After having their discussion with HR and Naveen, Ethan and Casey on the surface appeared to the outside world to be in a good place also. However there was still a deep wound that was starting to fester. Despite all the therapy, discussion about the abortion, even having an in depth discussion about what contraception they would use going forward and assurances from Casey that she would include Ethan in any decision making going forward, he was still haunted by the recurring dream that Casey was going to abandon him. He thought that after his mother said her final goodbye and that everything was calm the nightmare would go away but they did not. They even haunted him on days that she stayed with him. It was always worse when she was not there of course, her physical presence was the only thing that calmed him and got him back to sleep. Casey would occasionally feel him wake but he would assure her he was fine and then cuddle her, saying I love you, so much before he drifts off back to sleep. Casey knew the key points of Ethan’s chat with Louise but she always let him discuss the events and how he was truly feeling on his terms.
It had being a couple months since Louise’s departure and he was still haunted by the recurring nightmare. It had gotten to a point where Casey was very concerned about Ethan. Casey had a run of late shifts so she generally stayed at hers but when she saw Ethan, he was looking exhausted. She had seen him run on exhaustion before and that was while he was treating Naveen. This time though she could not help but feel there was something else he was hiding however whenever he was questioned as to what was the matter, he kept brushing Casey off. It was a quiet day and Casey was updating a patient chart and Ethan came up beside her. He was the worst she had seen him.
“Something is clearly up Ethan.”
“I am fine, just did not sleep well.”
“Why aren’t you sleeping well? Talk to me Ethan” said Casey, quietly but pleadingly.
“There is nothing wrong Casey. End of discussion.” He says adamantly before walking off.
Casey stood there shook. She knew Ethan was lying and she was concerned that he was not telling her for a reason. Just then Tobias saw a frustrated looking Casey.
“Valentine, what’s up?”
“Nothing to concern you Tobias.” She said before walking off. Tobias was not convinced. He had seen the beginnings of a wall go up and he had noticed the lack of sleep that he had been getting but now it was clear that whatever wall he had started was now impacting his relationship with Casey. He had never seen his friend happier than
what he had been and it saddened him. He knew he had to confront him, much like he did multiple times in medical school, he knew it would be a gamble, but it was one he had to take.
Casey was again working a late shift. Ethan was at home alone, wallowing in the prison of doubt he had created. All of a sudden there was a knock on his door. It shook Ethan out of his stupor. He got up to answer and he was surprised to see Tobias on the other side. He lets him in and offers him a scotch. Tobias accepts.
“What is up Ethan and don’t you dare start your bullshit spiel of how nothing is wrong.”
Ethan was affronted.
“Is it that obvious?” Asked Ethan
“In a word, Yes.” Stated Tobias.
“I am fine…”
“No you are not” interjected Tobias. He took a breath.
“The last time I saw you in this much denial about your feelings was medical school.”
Anger flashed in Ethan’s eyes briefly.
“We are not in medical school I know but why is this feeling so similar Tobias.”
“Because you are being the same emotionally constipated idiot.”
“So shall I expect you to be making a play for Casey huh?”
Tobias slapped him.
“I saw for months you building a war around yourself when things started to get really serious with you and Estelle. I saw and heard the anguish it caused both of you. Try as I might back then, you did not listen or if you did you lived in denial. That conversation that night was the last straw for her. She went to someone who knew what was going on and that was me. And here I am, some many years later and you are repeating the same fucking bullshit Ethan.”
“I am not…”
“Let’s recap shall we? Your girlfriend survives a bio weapon attack, things are great, you are the happiest I have seen you, then all of a sudden your world is turned upside down. Ever since then to me it looks like you have started to build a wall to protect yourself, you are in denial about how you are going and now you are pushing a woman who cares for you very much away. How am I doing?”
Ethan slams his glass down in frustration and starts to cry and then it all spills out.
Ethan told her about how when he was in the Amazon when Casey had found out she was pregnant and how she decided not to tell him, how he found out about it, the conversation he had the next morning and how she said to him that he was only helping her out of obligation. The dream he had after he first saw Louise, how things were going great and how he kept having a recurring dream of Casey abandoning him, even though they had discussed everything going forward. Tobias was stunned.
“Why have you not told Casey about these dreams? Clearly it is eating away at you and creating a problem where there should not be one?”
Ethan thinks for a minute. “I truly do not know. I am scared. Scared that she will think less of me for thinking she will abandon me, he’ll even have another abortion again without telling me…”
“Firstly, I get her not telling you, I mean I would not want to hear that over voicemail but seriously Ethan, why are you self sabotaging yourself again?”
“I am not..”
“Yes, yes you are.” Stated Tobias. “If you were not self sabotaging then Casey would know about these dreams instead of you lying to her and clearly yourself and to answer your other question, No I will not make a play for Casey.”
Ethan did not know what to think. Tobias was right of course, like he was back in medical school but it was still confronting.
“I really am an idiot aren’t I?”
“Well, yes but unlike medical school you have closure on Louise. In a way she has abandoned you again but at least she said goodbye this time, not just upping and leaving with no explanation.”
Ethan took a drink. “And you don’t think Casey will think less of me?”
“She is worried about you buddy, there is no denying that and she wants to be there for you.”
Ethan nods his head in resignation.
“Thank you Tobias.”
“I admit it was a gamble, given our history with chats like this but I am glad I took it.”
Ethan nodded. Both men enjoyed another drink before Tobias left.
Ethan knew what he had to do but it was still harrowing, admitting to the woman he loves that he was having dreams of being abandoned by her but he had to do it. He looked at her schedule. She had a day off after a run of lates. He decided that he would ask her here and take the day off so they could talk. He messaged Naveen that he would be away on that day and messaged Casey asking if she would stay with him the night before to which she agreed.
A few nights later, Ethan was in the office, nervous. He decided to stay back and bring Casey to his house. Also if he stayed at work it meant that he would not drink. Her shift came to an end and they made their way to his apartment. They made their way up and Ethan warmed up some leftovers for dinner.
They sat down and ate. Ethan could see that Casey was exhausted but he decided to come out with everything.
“You are right, I am not ok. Since Louise unceremoniously came and left again I have had a recurring dream. Of being abandoned…abandoned by you. The scenario in each abandonment is different. You go on sabbatical and do not come back, similar to circumstances to Louise leaving me, sometimes taking a child, sometimes not, you have another abortion and not tell me again…”
He starts to cry. “I know we have discussed the abortion, made plans going forward, spent plenty of time in therapy and I still can not shake the dreams.”
Casey stands up and hugs him while he lets his emotions out. It was confronting to hear that Ethan was still having these dreams and thoughts. She knew that seeing Louise had given him closure but still her declining any assistance would be upsetting. In that moment though all she did was thank him for telling her. They head to his room and make love to each other before drifting off to sleep. For the first time in several months Ethan did not have the nightmare. He awoke the next morning, rested, relieved. He cuddles into Casey and she starts to stir. She can feel how hard he is for and he and they have another sweet and slow session. Hunger eventually forces them from bed and Casey makes some pancakes for breakfast.
“I do not know what I can say that will be condescending. I know you are more of an action person, not a word person given your history but you know I will endeavour to show with my actions, not only how much I love you and mean to me but that I am not Louise and not abandon you.”
“I love you so much, I do not know what I did to deserve you.” Says Ethan.
They have a quiet day in. Fully enjoying each other and Ethan hoping that the worse of the nightmares were gone.
A week goes by and Ethan has no more nightmares and it dawns on him that even though he had been abandoned, hurt, he could rebuild and let those people back in. This realization also helped him work on his relationship with Alan. The most relieved people aside from Casey obviously was Naveen and Tobias. Ethan was also happy too and as they entered what would be Casey’s final year of residency, he was confident that he would not again butcher a future chat.

Authors note 2: so one more chapter of a happy ending. It will take in key points along the final year including g the end of the residency period. Thank you for enduring thus far.

Choices Flash Fic! DarkFic; Tobias x F!MC
Angels in Hell
Tumblr media
@choicesflashfics #36. Uses prompt #2, "You’re allowed to fall apart a little."
A/N: I started writing this before I thought to grab a prompt, and it went to dark places. It was supplied to be a Harper x Ethan, but F!MC started talking... That's it. This fic is dark and I'm not sure why it came out, since it seems like the first chapter rather than a one shot. // Words: 1150 // Pairing: light f!mc x Tobias, acor MC x Antony (implied) // implied age gap relationship.
I always knew I'd end up working for the Outfit, from the time Uncle Tony caught me with a plastic stethoscope in my hands, to the day that Uncle Sam signed my soul over to the combat medical corps.
We need good people... like you, Chiara. You're the brains and Sy is the brawn. There will always be a place for the both of youse in the Outfit.
Is that because of Mama? I asked as I stood in front of Uncle Tony's desk and watched him swallow his grief along with his Campari, gold rings glittering. The shadow of two days beard was heavy on his jaw, and I yearned to reach out, to touch him, but instead crumpled the acceptance letter to Edenbrook in my pocket into a smaller and smaller ball, trying to keep my breathing steady as I watched him, the hero of my girlhood, the master of us all.
He set the glass down on his desk, the sound of it like the funeral bells that had gonged as the hearse pulled away from the cathedral steps in Little Italy, and I felt my throat tighten too. I swallowed my grief with my wine, clinking his glass in a toast. To her, then. I would always live in her shadow, until I could prove my worth.
Uncle Tony's eyes glistened wetly. Arin was a good woman. Bellissima... my tiger. You remind me of her, Princess. That blonde hair, and those eyes... Dio in paradiso, but she was a hurricane. And you are her very image...
Even though he'd married Octavia, I knew Mama had been the love of his life. Uncle Tony would have died for her, and nearly did. That was why I gave him my pledge of loyalty, right there in that room. A pledge for love, the kind that lasts beyond the grave.
And when I returned, I was no longer Chiara Valentine, Arin Valentine's little princess, but Chiara Valentine, combat medic and fast tracked through medical school due to all the strings pulled by Uncle Tony. It wasn't that I couldn't have done it on my own recognizance, but time was a luxury we didn't have after Doc Claudius had gotten his brains blown out by the Family, out in Drakovia. And Sy was in the clink. Again. For stealing cars from some gang in LA, connected to the Yakuza.
The Campari on the desk turned into the Negroni at the bar, and I was staring up into the golden eyes of my boss's and biggest mistake's biggest rival, the one and only Dr Tobias Carrick.
"Valentine." His upper lip curled, and I itched to smack the smugness right off his face, but I'd probably break a nail. After all, I was the Brains. I'd never fought anyone closer than fifty paces in my life, and we'd been in a tank. "Am I really that ugly, little princess, or do you scowl like that at all the plebs?"
If it were up to me, men like him would be six feet under, but I'd promised to hold my peace on mob soil, and the last thing Uncle Tony needed was a war with the Irish. Not that he'd do it for my sake -- it had been Mama who held his heart, and always would. So when I opened my mouth, what came out next surprised me. "I lost ... I lost someone. Today... it's the anniversary of her death."
"Bartender!" Tobias waved down the hipster serving white claw spritzers to the masses. "Get us a bottle of -- what's your poison, princess?"
"Limoncello." I didn't have to hesitate when the bartender slid the bottle down, and poured us two, on the rocks.
He prepared to knock back the entire glass when I caught him on the sleeve, for a moment looking thrown off his game, like he'd never seen a woman before. "Whoa there, Princess."
"Do you know what they say, Dr Carrick? They say that only the dead have seen the end of war. That's Plato. And don't call me princess." That's Antony's name for me.
"You’re allowed to fall apart a little." He touched my cheek gently, and it was only then that I realized I was crying. "Was it... a patient?"
What could I tell him? Of Afghanistan, and the starless desert skies that seemed to reach into the abyss, or of that single moment when my life changed forever? Or of how my life now seemed laid out before me in a single straight line with only a few stops along the way, Chicago to Afghanistan, to Boston and soon, soon, sooner than anyone could ever know, back again.
A pledge for love, the kind that lasts beyond the grave.
"She's been dead a long time." I wiped my cheek angrily with my sleeve, streaks of mascara coming away on it. "My mother. She died, and no one ever figured out what it was that killed her. That's why I'm here, really." I had never admitted the truth out loud before, to anyone.
Antony had come to find me at the barracks. I'd been barely eighteen, and one year in the army already. We'd drunk Limoncello til midnight, Arin Valentine's favorite drink, and we'd held one another and wept. In the morning, he'd left me with blood still drying on the sheets and an ache in my heart that no amount of Limoncello would ever ease.
A pledge for loyalty, until I stepped out of her shadow and proved my worth.
"Do you want to get out of here?" Tobias rubbed a hand over his stubbled jaw and held out a hand. "We can just walk, Chiara. You look like you need some air. I won't talk about old business tonight, and it's not a trick, I... I promise."
I took his hand, Dio in paradiso, heaven and hell. Eyes as gold as the sunless desert sands. "You can talk about it all you want, Tobias." I don't care if we win, after all, a snap of the fingers, a pouch filled with thirty pieces of silver, a handshake in a back room, that grant will end up lining the pockets of Edenbrook instead of Mass Kenmore, whether Tobias Carrick likes it or not.
I'll be going back to the Outfit, my mother's daughter, back to Antony. For I owe so much more to him than blood. Life and loyalty, and a love that never dies.
"Valentine?" Tobias waited by the door, jacket thrown over one shoulder, looking at me with a troubled question in his eyes. If I slid off the stool now, I'd have to make that choice. I'd have to face the truth about what drove me to this place, to Boston, to Edenbrook, and to stare at my own reflection in a glass of Limoncello as I counted the stars like the drops of blood in a vein, all the way down the bloody years.
Blood on my hands, blood on the sheets, washed clean by my tears.
Demoni in paradiso, angeli all'inferno.
Only the dead have seen the end of war.

Note
In your pairings who has the biggest "body count"? Does the person with a lower BC get mad about that?
Love, love, love this!
Ethan x Lilac: Highest body count is Ethan. Both because he's older and also because he did some ONS. Just like with his initial opinion about love, he had a similar scientific and clinical view on sex. Lilac's reaction to this?
Tumblr media
Laurel x Tobias: Tobias. No explanation needed. Also, Laurel didn't date much as she was a young single mom. Laurel gets a little jealous (not seriously) and even teases Tobias about it. His response is always:

A Novel Concept
Tumblr media
Ethan Ramsey is in the dog house. It's apparently clear, and his buddy, Tobias, comes in with an assist. But will his advice help or hurt Ethan's chances of getting back in Kaycee's good graces?
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x Kaycee MacClennan (F!MC) Characters: Tobias Carrick Rating: Teen Words: 1,778
A/N: Thank you, Nonny, for this ask from the @choicesaprilchallenge24 prompt “A picnic?! Have you swallowed a romance novel?”" It went a little longer than a drabble, I hope you don't mind! (Didn't have much time to edit... so hope it's all good!)
My Masterlist
Tumblr media
The tension in the Diagnostic Team Office was almost palpable. So palpable that Harper retreated to her office nearly an hour before. But Tobias was braver than that – or just stupid; the jury was still out.
He remained behind, his eyes darting up from his laptop every time Ethan mumbled under his breath or Kaycee let out an exaggerated sigh. Both of them assumed Tobias was doing research on their recently admitted patient, blissfully unaware of the missive he was typing, all about professionalism in the workplace and why it’s ill-advised to date your colleagues. He’d shoot that to them in an e-mail once he was sure they were in better moods. But the truth was, Tobias Carrick was nosy and was not about to leave before he got the tea. And there had to be tea!
Tobias was in on the secret, but to most, Ethan and Kaycee were the worst-kept secret in Edenbrook. On a typical day, they were all heart eyes and butterflies, but today, they barely acknowledged each other during their morning meeting, and that hadn’t changed since its end. Even Kaycee incessantly tapping her pen against the conference table hadn’t earned any commentary from the stone-faced Dr. Ramsey. Not a single sarcastic comment, endearing remark, or complaint fell from his lips.
Kaycee was the one to finally break the standoff. Standing up with a huff, she pointedly looked at Tobias and announced she was going to make her rounds. With a side-eyed glance at Ethan, she slunk out the door without another word. Tobias waited patiently for his friend to open up... but that never occurred. If the man retained water as much as he did his emotions, he’d be their next patient, not to mention a sideshow act: Edenbrook’s human blowfish! Tobias laughed at the image in his mind, finally requiring his friend to acknowledge his presence.
“Care to share what’s so amusing?” He said after clearing his throat. “Did you finally figure out the knock-knock joke Dr. Lewis told at the conference two weeks ago, or are you imagining what your latest conquest’s reaction will be when she figures out how old you really are?”
Tobias pushed back from the table with a raised brow, “Really? Do you want to go there, Ramsey? Because according to my calculations, Kaycee is about three years younger than my latest... has she figured it out yet?”
Mouth agape, Ethan was eager to change the course of the conversation. “So... what were you laughing at.”
“I was imagining you as a human blowfish.”
“You know what... remind me to never ask you what’s on your mind again. It’s too dark and scary in there.”
“As if you could resist!” Tobias laughed. “But I want to know what’s on your mind. What’s with you and my buddy MacKlennan? You could cut the tension in here with a knife this morning.”
“Nothing is going on,” Ethan said, offering no genuine attempt at being convincing.
“You’re a shitty liar, Ramsey. What did you do?”
Ethan finally looked up from his notebook. “Why do you automatically assume I’m the one to blame?”
“Because you usually are,” Tobias smirked. “Now, what’s going on?”
Ethan took off his glasses, placing them on the table with a sigh as he rubbed the bridge of his nose. “Kaycee is mad at me because I forgot our six-month anniversary.”
“Man,” Tobias chuckled, “You suck.”
“That’s not the worst part. See, I didn’t forget. But it happened to coincide with me coming off my second double in three days. I was so tired. I truly thought it was still a day away.”
“But that’s understandable, and Kaycee is reasonable. Why would she be so upset with you over that?”
“Probably because I followed up with ‘who celebrates six-month anniversaries anyway? High school students and people who are certain they’ll never hit the year mark.”
“Really?” Tobias glared. “All these years, and still none of my charm and charisma has rubbed off on you? What were you thinking?”
“I wasn’t!” Ethan protested. “I was exhausted and cranky.”
“YOU?” Tobias teased.
“I’ve apologized a half-dozen times, but she still barely speaks to me.”
“Well, in fairness, she’s worked a lot this week, too. I doubt either of you are your best selves right now.”
“Thank you, Mother Oprah. Now, do you have any wisdom to help me repair this situation?”
“As a matter of fact, I do, wiseass... but keep talking like that, and you can add me to the list of people barely speaking to you.”
“All right,” Ethan surrendered. “I’ll be nice...how do I fix this?”
“A sincere apology, not the half-assed shit I’m sure you’ve mustered so far... and then you’re going to have to go all out to celebrate your anniversary.”
“I’ve already made reservations at Mistral. I just don’t think she’ll want to join me at this point.”
Tobias waved a dismissive hand. “Anyone can make reservations at Mistral. You need to do something better than that,” he snapped his fingers as an idea came to mind. “A picnic! Show up at her place with a picnic basket filled with her favorite treats, then take her to a pretty, secluded spot... for a small fee, I can share some of my favorite places... you may even have to pick wildflowers for her, buddy.”
“A picnic?” Ethan sneered. “Have you swallowed a romance novel?”
“Fine!” Tobias said, shutting his laptop and rising to his feet. “If you don’t want my advice, figure it out on your own.”
“Wait, wait...” Ethan softened. “I’m sorry, did I mention the sleep deprivation?”
“You did... but face it, we all know you’re still an ass when fully rested.”
“A picnic?” Ethan asked, ignoring him. “Do you really think she’d like that?”
“Chicks, dig that shit,” Tobias insisted, pulling a pen from his lab coat to jot some notes. “Here... these are some very romantic spots within driving distance, and the name of a little gourmet deli in Cambridge that will make a great lunch and pair it with the perfect wine... I can write some of my go-to lines when I need to get out of the dog house if you like?”
“No... no... I’m good. If I’m honest, I don’t think you’ve had a relationship that lasted more than three months in the past decade, so I may need a different approach.”
“Yeah, but that’s not because they didn’t want them to last longer... I think you’re missing out.”
The sound of footsteps approaching caused the men’s heads to turn toward the door, where they saw Kaycee coming down the hall.
“Shh!” Tobias ordered. “She’s back! Here’s your chance.... turn on the charm, bro. I know you’ve got it in you.”
Oblivious to Tobias, Kaycee walked up to Ethan with a look of contrition. “Ethan, we have to talk.”
“No,” he said, reaching for her hand. “I have to talk. I am so sorry for being a jerk. It’s not an excuse, but I’ve been tired and more of a curmudgeon than usual. But of course our six-month anniversary is something to be celebrated. I hope you know how much each day I’m with you means to me, and I hope you’ll let me make it up to you.”
Kaycee let out a breath, and her lips twisted into a tender smile. “I mean, I kind of like the fact that you’re a curmudgeon... just not when it’s aimed directly at me.”
“I’m sorry,” he whispered, brushing a tendril away from her face. “If you’ll forgive me, I will make it up to you.”
“Oh, will you?” she simpered. “What do you have in mind?”
“Well,” Ethan glanced at silent Tobias, who gave him the thumbs up. “I know this quiet little spot on Spectacle Island. I thought we could go there for a picnic. I’ll get your favorite wine, some baguettes, a nice brie... chocolates for after. Maybe we can pick some flowers before, you know...”
“Really?” she asked, “That’s what you want to do? A picnic?”
“Why? Don’t you like the idea?”
“I do,” Kaycee insisted. “It’s just... it doesn’t sound like you. Did you swallow a romance novel or something?”
Ethan's eyes shoot to Tobias, who bursted into laughter.
“Tobias?” Kaycee said, finally noticing he was in the room.
“I’m sorry! I’m leaving,” he grinned. “But you two need to work whatever you’ve got going on, and do it now... because, I swear,  you two... you’re perfect for each other.
Ethan smiled proudly and wrapped an arm around Kaycee’s shoulder as Tobias slunk out of the room. “He’s right, you know... we are.”
“He is,” she blushed. “But be honest... the picnic... that was his idea, not yours. Right?”
“What? Don’t you think I’m capable of planning a romantic date for you?”
“Of course you are! And you have, but did you come up with this idea?”
Ethan leaned back against his desk with a sigh, pulling Kaycee against him. “How did you know?”
“Hon, do you have any idea how many people he’s brought to Spectacle Island? The stories in the hospital are legendary.”
“Seriously?”
“Seriously! Nurses...doctors... the new PT assistant in pediatrics.... the communications director....”
“All right,” Ethan laughed. “I get it... so that means we won’t be making a spectacle of ourselves on Spectacle Island?”
“Well, it’s not that I’m opposed – but we can do it our way, not Tobias’s.”
“Then what do you say we go with the evening I had planned for us?”
“Oh?” She asked curiosity piqued. “And what did you have in mind?”
“I was thinking we could get all dressed up,” he said, placing a kiss behind her ear.
“Mmm... go on.”
“Dinner at Mistral?” he offered, brushing her hair away from her neck as his lips traced her newly exposed skin. “Maybe a little dancing after... so I can show you off?”
“Mmmhh,” she sighed. “And then?”
“Then we go back to my place... and we get to  take off all those fancy clothes...”
Kaycee pulled back with a playful smile. “To do what, exactly, Dr. Ramsey?”
“Things that will make you forget you were ever mad at me?” he winked.
“Now... how can I resist that. When will you be picking me up?”
“Saturday? Six o’clock?”
“It’s a date,” she beamed. “And Ethan?”
“Yes?”
“You’re pretty good at this romance thing all on your own.”
“Shhh,” he whispered in her ear. “Don’t let that get out. I have a reputation to uphold.”
“I get it,” she said, stepping away and straightening her clothes. She was at the door when she turned with a smile. “We can’t have anyone thinking you swallowed a romance novel.”

Harmony of Hearts
Pairings: Bryce x Olivia, Ethan x Merida (@lilyoffandoms), Tobias x Casey (@jerzwriter) Book: Open Heart Word Count:>800 Rating/Warnings: general (only warning is bad song writing, I'm not a song writer 🤷‍♀️)
Synopsis: Tobias, Ethan, and Bryce surprise the ladies with a song they wrote for them.
Tumblr media
"Not so fast, Ramsey–" Tobias's arm shot out in front of the head of diagnostics, blocking his path to the door.
"We all agreed to this," Bryce added, folding his arms as he leaned against the wall, a playful smirk playing on his features. "For what it's worth, I think you sound good."
The blue-eyed doctor's brows narrowed, and his lips pulled into a frown, although the corner of his lips betrayed the sentiment. "It's not too late to book a spa weekend."
"You know this will mean more. And, isn't today about celebrating them?" Tobias turned Ethan back toward the living room. Bryce followed closely behind as Tobias led the way, keeping Ethan trapped between them.
The guys gathered together, each holding a worn piece of paper as they stood in front of the couch where the girls had gathered. Their light-hearted conversation quieted as their attention curiously shifted.
"It was your idea, Lahela—" Tobias nudged him forward. "Would you like to do the honors?
Warmly, Bryce stepped closer, his eyes filled with warm affection for his wife and their friends. "Today is not just any day—it's a day dedicated to celebrating the strength, grace, and brilliance of women around the world, but we couldn't let it pass without expressing our love for the incredible women in our lives."
Ethan's stoic expression softened to offer a nod of agreement with his colleague's words.
Bryce continued, picking up the ukulele that had been lying on the coffee table. "So, we've prepared a little something for you."
"It might not be Grammy-worthy," Ethan added, attempting to lower any expectations. "Songwriting wasn't covered at Hopkins."
Tobias couldn't resist a teasing grin, his eyes sparkling as he glanced at Casey. "Don't expect Taylor Swift-level lyric writing or an Era's tour performance. No outfit changes here! We're more like... 'shower karaoke on a Tuesday' level."
Casey shot Tobias a playful smirk, crossing her arms as she relaxed on the comfy couch. "Well, if it's shower karaoke on a Tuesday, then I expect nothing less than a chart-topping hit."
Bryce skillfully strummed the ukulele strings, each note resonating with a gentle warmth, the instrument itself echoing the affection he felt for Olivia. He nodded to Tobias, signaling he was up.
With a confident grin, Tobias cleared his throat, placing his paper on the end table. He knew the words well enough. His voice, smooth and melodic, filled the room:
🎶 "In a world of puzzles and diagnostic charts,
Casey, you're the melodic beat in my heart.
With your brilliance and laughter, you light up the day,
Here's a little song to say, 'I love you' in my own way."🎶
Casey's eyes sparkled with delight. She had always loved his voice when he sang along to songs they loved, but to have him write this for her—it was something altogether different, something she couldn't believe how much she needed (and now wanted more)
Ethan was next. He carefully adjusted his tie before stepping forward. The world-renowned physician wasn't used to such nerves. His fingers trembled slightly, holding the paper tightly in his hands. His gaze flickered between it and Merida.
🎶 "Merida, my love, you were once a mystery to me,
But in your eyes, now, all the answers I see.
Your brilliance and grace cannot be denied
My love for you, I could never hide."🎶
Merida, usually composed, had a soft smile drawing on her lips. She reached for Ethan's hand, squeezing in gratitude. "I love you," she mouthed the words quietly. His thumb brushed over her fingers.
Bryce looked at Olivia, his warmed with affection for her. His gentle touch on the ukulele continued:
🎶 "Olivia, my partner in this life's beautiful dance,
In the realm of hearts, you're my favorite chance.
With a scalpel in my hand, and every healing word,
It's our symphony of love, forever to be heard." 🎶
Olivia's eyes misted at the beautiful song. Her hands clasped over her heart as she marveled at the men and their song as they continued:
🎶 "Hand in hand, through thick and thin,
Together we stand, let the melody begin.
For the women we cherish, our hearts take flight,
In the symphony of life, you're our greatest delight.
To Casey, Merida, and Olivia so dear,
With love, laughter, and the occasional tear.
With this song for you, our voices combine,
Forever grateful, forever thine." 🎶
The simple melody filled the room and the hearts of the girls. Olivia, Casey, and Merida exchanged surprised glances. Their initial amusement at the idea of them writing a song turned into genuine appreciation.
"Never again," Ethan grumbled to Tobias.
"We'll see about that," he offered with a wink. "Thursday's Karaoke night—I already signed us up!"
Their conversation was cut short as Casey, Merida, and Olivia showered them with praise, offering each their own affections of gratitude for the thoughtful gesture and the words of admiration they'd forever hold dear.

Begin Again
Premise: Cassie needs closure on the events of the poison attack.
Book: Open Heart Pairing: Ethan Ramsey x F!MC (Cassie Valentine); feat. Tobias Carrick Rating/Category: Teen. Angsty Fluff. Words: 2,100
A/N: Submission for @aprilchallenge prompt "sunshine" and for @tobias-carrick-appreciation-week - Day 8.
Tumblr media
The hallowed halls of Boston’s Trinity Church were solemn as befitted the occasion. The morning sun shone through the stained glass windows above the sanctuary, casting a kaleidoscope of colors across the wall. Under the soaring ceiling, painted decorations, colorful mosaics and vibrant murals brought home the sacred nature of worship.
The reverend presiding over the Easter Sunday service spoke of redemption, forgiveness and a chance to live a better life. Cassie Valentine bowed her head in prayer, letting the serene words from the sermon wash over her troubled thoughts.
Six months ago, she had been on death’s door, waiting for the poison coursing through her body to claim another victim. Cassie hadn’t fully realized how precious life was until that moment.
Over time, she had come to accept what she couldn’t change and thought she had forgiven herself for her role in the events leading up to that moment. As the choir's voices rose in song, she wondered if the words were divinity’s way of telling her it was time to move on.
When she stepped up to the altar to receive Communion, she felt the peace she’d been seeking warm her insides. And yet, a niggling sense of disquiet remained as she buttoned up her red spring coat, the thick material flaring around her knees, and headed home.
There was one more step she needed to take to begin again.
Two days later, Cassie swiped her card and pushed the handle to slide open the doors to the diagnostic team’s office. She’d just finished her half-shift in the ICU when she received a page from Ethan.
“Do we have a case?” she asked, sitting in the visitor’s chair across from his desk.
He glanced up from the computer screen and removed the reading glasses perched on the bridge of his nose.
“No, but your labs are back,” he said, picking up a patient file and flipping it open.
Ethan had been running Cassie’s bloodwork every month since the attack. The treatment she and Rafael had received was experimental, and there was no telling how long it would hold or what was the long-term effect.
As he’d done during the poison attack, Ethan took over as her treating physician, monitoring her labs and scans for any signs of change.
“Your white blood cell count and ESR are slightly elevated,” he said, handing her a printout of the test results. “But within the accepted range. So it might just be due to the cold you were battling last week.”
Cassie scanned the results and noted the pathologist’s comments at the bottom of the page. All clear, she sighed in relief.
“There’s still residual scarring on your lungs.” He glanced at his computer monitor.
Ethan swiveled the screen sideways so she could see the X-ray scan. He pointed to the faint shadowy lines, circling the area with the laser pointer on his pen. “But it’s less than it was before, so….”
Cassie hid a smile at his objective tone. Technically, it was frowned upon for physicians to treat their families and loved ones. But no one dared tell Dr. Ramsey whom he could or couldn’t take on as a patient. Not that she wanted anyone else in charge of her care.
“…using the inhaler for now, especially if you feel your chest tightening after a run,” he continued. “Don’t let things exacerbate. You might think you’re fine, but your body doesn’t.”
Cassie listened to Ethan while reading the radiologist’s report. She asked him a few questions and felt satisfied with her progress. But something had been bothering her since church on Sunday, and she decided to just ask him.
“Hey, Ethan?” she began, hesitant about his reaction knowing their relationship. “How much do you know about the chemical composition of the antidote? Did Carrick talk to you about it at all?”
He stilled, a worried look gathering in his blue eyes. Cassie thought he might not respond, but he nodded as if coming to an agreement with himself.
“I know enough,” he said. “Organic chemistry has never been my strong suit. But I met Carrick while you were on medical leave. He explained what went into developing the antidote and the potential side effects, as he understood them.”
He stopped, seemingly lost in thought, tapping his fingers against the desk. Cassie started to prompt him, but then his eyes snapped into hers.
“What is this really about, Cassie?” Ethan queried.
Cassie wanted to shrug it off, but the feeling of disquiet that had persisted the last couple of weeks wouldn’t let her.
“Do you ever get that feeling of something left unfinished?” When he nodded slowly, she kept going. “I’ve been trying to put what happened behind me, but I’ve realized I can’t do that until I understand how I’m still alive.”
She stood up and started pacing in front of his desk, needing an outlet for the stress and frustration trapped inside her.
“It’s like I’m missing a piece of the puzzle. I was there, but it felt like it was happening to someone else,” Cassie stressed, willing him to understand. “But I can’t reconcile everything in my head. Until I have all the answers, I’ll never move on. I’ll always be that person with sunken eyes in a shapeless hospital gown, waiting to find out if I’ll ever see the sun rise again.”
“Okay,” was all he said before picking up his phone and tapping on the screen.
“What are you doing?” Cassie asked, confused at his non-reaction.
“Getting you answers,” he said, not looking up from the phone. “Carrick has an outpatient clinic on Friday. It’s the earliest he’s available. He says he can fit you in around one o’clock.”
“You texted Tobias? I’m surprised you have his number saved,” she mused, tapping one finger against her lips. “Are you friends now?”
“Not quite. He’s listed under ‘Asshole’ in my contacts,” Ethan smirked, making Cassie laugh. “Go see him. Get the answers you need. I’ll get someone to cover your patients.”
Cassie took a taxi to Mass Kenmore’s facility across town on Friday. Morning rounds had run over, and she didn’t want to take a chance on the subway. It was almost time for her appointment when she checked in with the receptionist at the outpatient clinic.
Tobias must have given the nursing staff advance notice. They didn’t ask questions or have her complete a patient intake form. Cassie had just sat down in the waiting room when they called her name and escorted her to an exam room.
“Doctor Valentine, what a surprise,” Tobias drawled once the door closed behind her.
He stood behind a desk, arms folded across his chest and a wolfish grin on his lips. It was the same one Cassie remembered from that long-ago softball game.
“Is it really a surprise if I’m listed in your appointment calendar?” she countered, crossing the linoleum floor to stand before him, her chin raised stubbornly.
She was grateful to him for saving her life, but his pompous attitude always rubbed her the wrong way.
“It is, knowing who set up that appointment,” he said. His hazel eyes glittered with amusement. “I don’t know what was more shocking. Ethan reaching out after all these months or him texting me for a favor.”
“It surprised me too,” Cassie admitted. “But he knew it was important to me.”
Tobias didn’t speak; he just stared at her. Cassie could read the calculation in his eyes. Rumors about her and Ethan had swirled between the two hospitals even before his grand declaration a couple of months ago.
Despite how circumspect they were in the hospital, Cassie still received the occasional side looks and heard whispers from those that didn’t know them. She was prepared for Tobias to say something snide, but he surprised her with his following words.
“Well, I’m glad to help. Please,” Tobias said, indicating the visitor’s chair.
Gone was the arrogant competitor who seemed to savor the thrill of the chase and the win. In his place was a warm and considerate doctor with friendly eyes, someone she wouldn’t mind knowing.
“So, you had questions about the antidote?” He folded his hands on the desktop and gazed at her expectantly.
“Yes. Lately, I keep reliving that day and what happened to the others and me. My labs are consistently clear, and there are still lingering symptoms of pneumonitis. Nothing too serious. Still, there are times I wake up in the middle of the night, unable to breathe, a familiar crawling sensation under my skin.”
“It’s likely psychosomatic,” he said gently. “Ethan sent over your file. From what I could see, there are no signs of the maitotoxin. The compound did what it was designed to do. It prevented the maitotoxin from spreading further and attaching to your plasma membranes. Gave your body time to focus on flushing the toxins out.”
Cassie pursed her lips. “Could you walk me through the process of the antidote and how it works? Understanding the nitty-gritty might help me feel more in control of my health.”
Tobias watched her from across the desk with a considering look. And then he leaned back in his chair, locking his hands behind his head.
“Okay. How good are you at chemistry?”
Cassie made a face. It was not her best subject in college or medical school. Tobias must have read her thoughts, for he chuckled good-naturedly.
“You really are Ethan’s protégé, aren’t you?” he snorted. “The man’s a certified genius, but put complex chemical formulas on the screen, and it might as well be a foreign language.”
“Patients don’t care if you can read chemical formulas,” she argued. “All they want is for someone to listen and to find a way to help them.”
“Two peas in a pod,” he smiled, shaking his head.
He straightened in his chair and turned to face the computer in the corner. He placed his right hand on the mouse and pulled the keyboard closer.
“I’ve been tweaking the formula for the compound in my free time,” he explained, his long fingers drifting across the keys of the keyboard. “We didn’t have time to test it before for obvious reasons, but there’s potential to use the antidote for other toxins. Okay. Here we go.”
Cassie scanned the three-dimensional chemical structure displayed on the screen. There were notations of chemical symbols overlaid on the design. Some she recognized quickly, but others she’d need to look up in the periodic table. She read the observations listed on the side of the screen and realized that Rafael was Patient A and she was Patient B.
She listened attentively as Tobias took her through the steps and the team’s observations from bloodwork done as the toxin was being flushed out of their systems. She smiled in gratitude when he answered her questions patiently, taking the time to explain the minutiae.
By the time they were done, Cassie felt calmer and more settled than she had in a long time.
“Thank you,” she said as he walked her out. “I don’t know if I’ve said this before, but thank you for giving me another chance at life.”
“Medicine’s a team effort,” he said, facing her as they stood in the hallway leading to the main reception.
A lifetime ago, she remembered running down that hallway with Baz, making their escape while Tobias and the security guard chased after them. His lips twisted in a wry grin as if reading her thoughts.
“Besides, the fifty-year Glenfiddich your brother sent me was thanks enough,” he remarked. “Don’t know if I’ve ever had scotch quite that old or that smooth.”
Cassie hid her surprise. She had no idea Max even knew who Tobias was beyond the basics. He certainly hadn’t mentioned this to her.
“Take care, Cassie,” Tobias said, patting her arm. “If you have more questions, you know how to reach me.”
With that, he stepped away and walked back toward the outpatient clinic.
Cassie strode past the reception, laughing inside at the perplexed look on the security guard’s face as he tried to place her.
She exited the hospital and crossed the street to a small green square with wooden benches set back from the walking path. She thought it must be a popular spot for the hospital, noting various individuals in white coats and scrubs enjoying the spring day.
Finding an unoccupied bench, she sat down and turned her face towards the sun, letting its warmth fill her with contentment and the will to start anew without fear.

It was the day after the attack. The hospital was slowly coming back to normal function after being shut down after the attack. It all looked normal but there was an air of sadness, shock and anguish that could not be ignored. Those directly involved with the discovery of the cure and the staff who provided support to Danny and Raf whilst they were in the coma were encouraged to have the day off and were offered counselling to work through any grief and any mental anguish that they have endured. This would also be offered to the hospital as a whole but the priority was those who were exposed the most.
Ethan knew he should not have been there. He went home and fell into a deep and exhausted sleep but he awoke with a nightmare of Casey dying in his arms. He could not get back to sleep so he went and sat in her room, watching her to reaffirm to himself that she did make it. Casey woke up and was surprised to see Ethan. He breathed a sigh of relief when she woke up. He asked how she slept and informed her that Rafael was improving.
He moved closer to her and squeezed her hand. Casey smiled weakly.
“Did you sleep well?”
“No, yes, I did fall into a sleep as I was exhausted from then I had a nightmare…” he takes another breath before continuing. “After that I ha hi d to come and see you, to see for myself that you did make it.”
“I made it Ethan, I am alive, yes it was traumatic, but I am here.” Adamantly stated Casey. Ethan leaned over and kissed the top of her head.
“As much as I am liking the visit, head home, rest, I am not going anywhere.” Ethan reluctantly left. He knew Casey was right but he could not help but worry. He stopped off at Derry’s to buy a coffee and went home. He emailed Naveen. Even though he and Casey had not discussed being in the open and how that would look but he felt it imperative that he get the ball rolling.
To Naveen,
I am emailing you to advise that I am in a relationship with Dr Casey Valentine. I have made her aware of my intent of being open about this and we will of course discuss in due course but I wanted to let you know so that we can get the ball rolling.
Regards
Dr Ethan Ramsey.
When Naveen had read the email he could not help but feel happy for his mentee. He knew that both him and Casey were more than capable of working well together, no matter what their relationship circumstances happened to be so he was happy if reporting lines stayed the same but at the end of the day he knew that call would be made by HR but he was hopeful that there would be a solution.
Casey’s physical condition improved over the following week. Her discharge day was the day of the funeral for Bobby and Danny. It was bittersweet. Casey was thankful that a cure was found and that she survived but there was the questions of why me, how is it fair? Going around in her head. Medical leave from work was approved and any counselling she knew would be taken care of however a part of her wanted to seek some type of normalcy. She went to the funeral, hoping it would give closure. In a way it did but she was unable to feel. She felt numb, cut off, the feeling was disconcerting. She felt so disconnected that she barely noticed that the wake was nearly over. Ethan came over to Casey and gave her a hug. “Come on, let’s go.”
He walked her to his car and they drove off.
“How does the weather know?”
“How does the weather know what Casey?”
“How did it know that today was a day of grey and misery?”
Ethan did not know what to say. He had intended to drive her home but at this point changed his mind, he was going to bring her to his.
It was not until they pulled up at Ethan’s building that she realized. They made their way to his apartment. He poured himself a glass of scotch and offered one to Casey which she accepted.
“I know that you must be going through so much. You seem, almost distant..”
“I am numb, numb and disconnected. I thought the funeral would give me a sense of closure, but I have felt so disconnected from anything…”
He kisses her, it was emotion charged. It caught Casey off guard but she returned the kiss. The kisses got more emotionally charged and heated. Ethan pulled away slightly, he rubbed his thumb along her jawbone.
“We don’t need to go any further tonight”
“I know Ethan, but I want to.”
She kisses him. Hungrily. He ran his hands down her side, reacquainting himself with her curves. He unzips her dress and discards it. He looks at her underwear. He kisses her gently on the lips before kissing the column of her neck. He tweaks her hardened nipples through her bra, eliciting a moan from Casey. He unhooks her bra and lavishes attention on her breasts. Casey feels even more aroused. She knew she was drenched. His hand made its way between her legs. He could feel how wet she was. He let out a groan and laid waist to her underwear. He ran a finger around her clit. Casey moaned as she bucked her hips. As much as Ethan wanted to fuck her pain away, he also wanted to savour this night. He positioned himself between her legs. He kissed the inside of her thigh, slowly. Casey quivered in anticipation and he ran his tongue around her clit. Again she moaned and bucked her hips. Ethan then ran his tongue through her folds before entering. He continued to eat her out, being guided by her moans and screams. He worked his way back up to her clit and inserted two fingers.
“Fuck…” she screamed, as he hit that spot from the get go. He moved his other hand up to her breast and massaged it. Casey could not recall when she last felt so much sensory overload. She was fast hurtling towards the precipice of what felt like an intense orgasm. She clenched his fingers and he knew she was close. He pumped her harder and sucked a little harder. Casey fell, screaming. He helped her ride it out. Casey felt like she was floating. He kissed her, the taste of her in his mouth was intoxicating. He got up and picked her up, he took her to his bedroom. He placed her down and she kissed him again, this time removing his clothing. She ran her hands along his hardened cock. He hissed. She then walked backwards towards his bed. They kiss again and Casey moves so that she is straddling him. He leans over to his top drawer and grabs a condom. He puts it on and then Casey slowly works her way down. It did not take long for her body to readjust to his size. Once he was fully sheathed she started to rock her hips. He thrust up causing her to moan. She rode him, harder than what she would have liked to have started with but the intensity of the previous orgasm is what she was chasing. Ethan kept pace, enjoying being fully inside her for real and not just in his lust fueled thoughts. He sucked her nipples which caused her to yell “fuck”. Before long Casey could feel she was getting close. Ethan could feel it too and with his thumb, massaged her clit. The sensation had Casey hurtling to again another intense orgasm. She fell and her climax triggered Ethan’s. After a few minutes she eased herself off and cuddled into Ethan. Casey then started to cry. She had wanted to all day, all week even but she could not, no matter how hard she tried. Ethan let her cry, assuring her that she was ok, and to let it all out. She cried herself to sleep. Ethan fell asleep not long after. He was relieved that Casey was able to let her emotions out and that she was in his arms.
Ethan awoke first the next morning. He tried to gently get out of bed but Casey started to stir.
“I did not mean to wake you” he said gently.
“I was waking up, it’s fine, I had no nightmare last night, plus with our activities, I actually feel rested.
Ethan smiled.
“I have a late start today but did you want to stay here, however long you feel you need?”
Casey stretched whilst she thought about it. Either staying here or at her apartment would mean long hours alone but decided here. After last night she knew she would not be treated like a fragile object and that is what she needed.
“I would like to stay here, but I will need some clothes.”
Ethan squeezed her hand.
“I can drop you to yours on my way to work.” He leaves the room and comes back with a key ring. This is so you can get back into the apartment and come and go as needed.”
Casey smiled. “Thank you Ethan.”
Ethan went to make breakfast while Casey had a shower. She joined Ethan for breakfast and he dropped her at her apartment. She made her way to her room and got changed first. She then packed a bag of clothes to take with her. She then went back to Ethan’s. She used the time alone to research the therapists she had the details of and booked one and had her first appointment a few days later.
She had a nap and woke with a start. It took her awhile to gain her bearings as to where she was. Just then there was a sound of a door opening. Casey got scared until she heard Ethan call out. She made her way to the living area. He could see she was scared.
“I had a nap and I woke with a start and I had only just got my bearings when you came back.”
He gave her a hug and kissed the top of his head.
“Everything is ok, Casey” he whispered. She went to pour them both some drinks whilst Ethan cooked dinner.
They enjoyed their meal and sat on the couch after dinner.
Casey told him how she was going to start therapy. Ethan was relieved she was going to seek professional help. He wanted to start a discussion around what a relationship would look like when she returned to work but he also wanted to savour this time also. Casey was relieved that she knew where she stood in relation to Ethan but she did not want to think too much on it right now. If she was being honest, she wanted to be fucked into oblivion again. The pleasant memories of last night came flooding back and she felt the familiar sensation at her core. She kissed Ethan, gently at first then more passionately. She then moved his hand to her centre.
“I know there are better coping mechanisms but I need you to fuck me.” She whispered in his ear. As much as Casey was right, there were more healthier ways to cope, he could not help but feel aroused so he obliged, as in a way he felt it would help make up for lost time.
They went several intense rounds, Casey fell into a blissful sleep and Ethan followed not long after. For nearly a fortnight it was a pattern that would be followed, work, dinner and mind blowing sex. After a couple of therapy sessions, Casey was given some more coping strategies which helped her not needing to use sex as a crutch. Casey was also starting to miss her friends also. Ethan understood but told Casey she was welcome to come over any time.
After nearly three weeks Casey returned to her apartment. She was used to the alone time whilst she was at Ethan’s but here it felt eerie. She knew that anyone on the night shift would be sleeping and that she was not alone but it was disconcerting.
Meanwhile back at Edenbrook Ethan was missing Casey, not only personally but professionally. He hoped she would be back at work soon, even if it was only part time. He was making his way back to the office when a familiar voice called out.
“Ethan, wait up” called out Tobias.
Ethan looked at his former friend perplexed.
“What are you doing here?”
“Meeting with the board, we will be doing research into the cure for the toxin and publishing it.”
“Congratulations” said Ethan. “Maybe even other toxins could be treated with this cure too.”
“Yeah? Maybe, hey listen, did you want to grab a coffee and catch up?”
Ethan looked at his watch, he had nothing on so he agreed. He suggested Derry Roasters.” Tobias agreed. They had coffee there before, a long time ago, an olive branch had been offered but it was declined and the memories of that haunted Tobias still but they were both older now and he hoped that they could put away the ghosts of their past.
They ordered their coffees and snacks and sat down. Tobias enquired as to how Casey and Raf were going, the team, and how Ethan was going with everything. Ethan was surprised when Tobias was not surprised when he stated that he was seeing Casey.
“You had been the talk of the post hospital grapevine, June for awhile was possessed on finding out the deal with you both but there was some interactions and dare I say an over protective posture that I had never seen from you that made me question the more scandalous rumours but seeing you with Casey that night solidified that any feelings were genuine.” Said Tobias.
“Well there’s truth to the rumours in that we did sleep together whilst she was in her intern year but it had nothing to do with the competition.”
“I figured that much, you have never been one for sexual favours, let alone entering into a relationship easily so she must be someone special.”
“She is, she helped me with Naveen, hell, she even did not give up on him when I did, we have had a rough patch but I feel we have come out the other side.”
Tobias was happy to hear this. He saw first hand how a reluctance in romantic relationships not only affected what was a good relationship but also his and Ethan’s friendship. Tobias wanted to chat further but he had to get back to work and so did Ethan.
“Well it was good to catch up bu…I mean Ethan. We must do so again.”
“I would very much like that, Tobias.”
Tobias could not believe how easy it was to slip back at calling Ethan buddy like he did for nearly three quarters of medical school and he was hopeful they could reconcile. Ethan too was optimistic, he had missed Tobias’s friendship a lot over the past 13 or so years and he hoped they could be friends again now.
A few days later Casey was again home alone, therapy had been going well and she was now eager to go back to work but the memories of what happened and who the hospital lost was haunting her. She had not even brought herself to meet Ethan at the hospital but little did she know that she was going to push herself out of her comfort zone. There was a knock at the door. It was Farley, their landlord. He had come with a sweet smelling bunch of flowers. She was mid thanking him when she noticed a mark on his wrist that he kept scratching. She asked him what was up, he said not much, the mark had been there for a bit but he was over his eyes seeing his gaming screen too bright. When questioned as to why he had not seen anyone about it, he stated that the deductible was too low. Casey stated that she worked as apart of a team that could do it pro bono. Farley was intrigued and she said “go get a coat, I will take you to the free clinic at Edenbrook and go from there.” Casey was now terrified but she knew that if she did nothing, neither would Farley. She found her new pink and grey sweater dress that Ethan had purchased and her leggings and met Farley. They made their way to Edenbrook and the free clinic.
“So far so good” Casey thinks to herself. They are met by Jackie and she takes them both in and immediately she notices Farley’s reaction to the light. Casey shows Jackie the rash and they agree he needs to be admitted. Casey took over from there stating that she would put him under the team.
Casey and Farley made their way to the team office. She was nervous for multiple reasons but ensuring something was done to get Farley healthy again was helping her keep it together.
They came to the office. Ethan looks up and is surprised to see Casey. He recognised the outfit he bought for her, and it looked better on her than what he thought. He decided to stay seated while acassy told him about what was going on. Ethan agreed to take Farley on and he paiged Sarah to take him to the patient room.
“Thanks Ethan, if I did not bring him he would have done nothing.”
He noted the fear in her voice.
“And how are you Casey, this is the first time you have been here since the attack.”
Casey took a breath. “I am keeping it together, ensuring Farley got some care has helped me keep it together. I am grateful for the push.”
Ethan nodded. They had not yet spoken how their relationship would look like at work so he gave her hand a gentle squeeze. Casey smiled weakly and could see the conflicted desire swirling in Ethan’s eyes.
“I’ll come over later” she said and Ethan stated
“Don’t you dare change that outfit.”
Casey blushed and took her leave.
Meanwhile, June was having her session with a therapist. Ever since the attack she had questioned if her thirst for knowledge had impacted on her missing the red flags that lead to the attack. Even before the attack she could see that Casey was a good doctor who kept on improving, her contributions were always more than token and yet she still had the desire to only care about how her relationship with Ethan affected the team, for which she clearly saw that it did not. She had always wanted to know what made people tick and would use whatever means necessary to do so but this obsession killed two people needlessly. It was difficult to come to terms with, even the team as a whole missed the flags, explaining it away as over concern but Travis’s actions was text book revenge and she missed it. Today June decided that she needed a new work challenge. Sure Edenbrook had the best diagnostics team that she had enjoyed working on but maybe a change is what she needed. She knew Ethan was not going anywhere anytime soon and if she was been honest with herself, she could see Casey running the team one day. She needed to plan and would submit her resignation further down the line. It was scary starting somewhere new but she felt she needed to.
Later that day Casey was still at the hospital. The more she was there, the easier being there was. She also wanted to keep informed of what was happening with Farley. She bumped into Ethan and continued with him towards the emergency department. They arrived just as an ambulance pulled up and opened the doors. Ethan took charge and they paramedic went through the particulars.
Female, mid 50’s, found on the street, collapsed and in and out of consciousness. The gurney was brought in and Ethan froze. The woman that the paramedic was describing was Louise Ramsey. Casey looked at the arms and noted the needle marks.
“Ethan, this woman has overdosed, she needs naloxone.”
Ethan jolted back to reality and got the drug and administered it. The nurses took over from there.
Casey wanted to talk to Ethan about it.
“I know you want to talk but I need to be alone for a little bit. I’m sorry” he says, with a pained expression before walking off to an on call room.
He is awash with all sorts of emotion and he kicks a bin.
He lets out a groan of frustration and ponders what to do next.

Authors note: and I will end it there. The next chapter will deal with Louise, and some more Tobias and Ethan reconciliation action and chapter 15 will be the last of the angstish moments with 16 being the happy ending. Thank you all for ending this far
