what if the canary curse didn't work the way we thought it did? what if, instead of jimmy automatically dying first, it meant he had to die first- because if he didn't, he had to play the game again?

every time the game ends, it restarts, until jimmy is the first to die. the other players are none the wiser, playing over and over until jimmy fulfills his curse. they poke fun at him, because how is he so bad at this game and no, seriously, how is he out first every time?

they don't realize that really, he isn't. he's even won once or twice. but if he wants to go home, he has to die first. he doesn't have a choice.

Jimmy died first. Again.

He’s not particularly upset about it. He didn’t really expect anything else. He knows that that’s how these games work. He knows that the others die only die because he does. It doesn’t bother him.

What does bother him is the teasing. Of course they would poke fun at him for dying first every time- that’s not it. They make fun of him for quite a few things, and he really doesn’t mind.

But calling him a canary? That makes his blood boil. Of course they don’t know the truth about him, he’s gone to great lengths to hide it, but still.

Some of them even think that there’s more to it than jokes. They think that’s really what he is. His EVO friends, notably, think that it’s the Watchers’ fault. That They made him a canary. He can see it in their eyes. Some of the ones more involved with the gods seem to think he’s involved with Death. That he’s Her canary, Her omen. That pisses him off most.

He’s not some stupid songbird, chirping pitifully until he chokes on dust. He’s not some pet sitting peacefully in his cage, warning the poor miners to leave, to save themselves, sacrificing himself in the process.

He’s the albatross. He’s a great seabird, soaring above the waves. He’s a hunter, swooping from the sky to grab his prey off of the water. He can soar for hours, he doesn’t need to flutter and flap like the other avians do. He’s no birdy.

He follows his mariners because he wants to. He’s not trapped. He has more freedom than any of them do. He cherishes that freedom; he would rather die than be caged.

And he certainly isn’t Death’s canary. He’s a deity in his own right, and he would really rather they stopped calling him Hers. Sure, the two of them are good friends, but that doesn’t mean he’s Hers.

The only time he gets to be himself is in the in between. He especially likes the Life Games After, when he can spin and soar and swoop after different players, his curse wrapping around the world like ribbons. He likes to watch them fall, to follow them, fathoms deep in the void.

It’s annoying, what they say about him. But it’s not the end of the world- he is. It’s kind of funny, actually, how they call him cursed when really they are.
