A! Good stuff. I feel like Taniya gets a bad rap in certain corners of the fandom (it appalls me the number of people who straight up believe she's a rapist) but I like her character and I think she and Misawa actually work well together, particularly by their second meeting when he's had some character development. Basically I am always down for some Tigershipping.

send me one of my muses names, and i’ll tell you the top three ships i’m drawn to for that character!
Oooh! Well! For Anzu, my first and foremost (romantically) would 100% be Danceshipping ( Anzu/Mai ). But I do admit I mostly think of Platonic ships with Anzu because of how much she cares for intimate friendship. Platonic Mystshipping (Anzu/Ishizu) just strikes me as wholesome for some inexplicable reason. And - I can't find the name for it but - Anzu & Jou's definitely a favorite of mine too, romantic, platonic or otherwise!
For Misawa, it's pretty straightforward, Tutorshipping (Misawa/Judai) will forever remain my favorite; Hornetshipping (Misawa/Manjoume) comes in next; and Tigershipping ( Misawa/Tanya ) is way too funny for me to disregard ngl.

I’m rewatching GX with my girlfriend and I had a realization when we watched Misawa’s duel with Manjoume the other night. I’m just copy/pasting what I wrote on Twitter:
In season 1, Judai and Misawa have a friendly rivalry. There is some minor symbolism referencing Japanese folklore of the Tiger and Dragon. This is seemingly dropped after season 1, when Misawa starts fading out of the plot
...Until season 3, when Judai and Misawa both end up falling in love with spirits.
It's also a nice contrast; Misawa fell for a tiger spirit turned human, Judai fell for a human turned dragon spirit.

The Sim(p)s GX Part 5: Sex, Babies, and UTTER DISASTER
...Not necessarily in that order.
WARNING: The usual sex references.
Taniya and Misawa finally had the excuse they needed to move into their own house. Although they were a little short on funds by the time it was completed.
The Welcome Wagon included Fubuki, who stood there creepily staring at the bedroom door while Taniya was sleeping.
Misawa got really angry at them; it appears that his Sim has some anger management problems. But later, he and Taniya danced to pop music and had sex twice in one night.
And then, the big day arrived: Taniya went into labor at 12:40 PM on a Thursday in-game. And that's where everything started to go wrong. Misawa had to come home early from work, Taniya set the kitchen on fire while making lunch, and everyone was constantly low on hygeine, low on energy, and generally pissed off. Misawa was a lousy birth partner, spending most of his time watching TV, and Taniya got so tired that she fell asleep in the bathtub.
And THEN, to top it all off, Misawa jerked off in the living room while Taniya was in the bedroom. Okay, game, you and I have to sit down and talk. I can tolerate quite a bit of OOCness for comedy's sake, but that was going a little far, don't you think? Kind of makes me want to work on that fic idea I had where Taniya had their second baby and Misawa tries his best to be supportive, even if he is a bit clueless about how to do this at times. But I should really finish Act 2 of Volatile Elements first.
Anna was born at around 11:30 PM Friday, because I chose the base game "have baby" option instead of the proper one for a home birth. I HC that Taniya pulled a Rhaenyra and said, "Fuck this, I'm doing it myself." Which is about the same as happened in my fanfic, really. At least she had a happier result than Rhaenyra did.
Now that that mess was all over, I checked in quickly with Judai's Harem again.
Sho: "Mwahaha. Everyone else is asleep, so the computer's ALL MINE."
And most of the rest of my time in this part was spent at Casa Tenjoume, trying to repair Manjoume and Asuka's relationship. At first my efforts seemed futile; Asuka even took a vacation day off from work when she was ovulating, only for them to spend the whole day bickering rather than baby-making! However, they finally got back into the green after a very productive conversation featuring Neo.
And things quickly got back on track in other ways too.
Now THAT is the kind of dynamic from this pairing that I like to see!
On his day off from work, Manjoume took Neo to the park, where they met up with Uncle Fubuki.
Then I checked in again with Misawa and Taniya while waiting for Asuka to reach the fertile part of her cycle. Taniya was hanging out at the police station chatting with Yubel.
And Misawa went to work, played chess with Kenzan, and got angry. Again.
Upon my return to Casa Tenjoume, Manjoume and Asuka got horny again. After making sure that Neo was safely asleep in bed, a flirty conversation in the kitchen led to some hot and steamy sex on the countertop. And...a pregnancy test right after was positive! Asuka finally got her wish.
Tune in next time as Asuka and Manjoume have their baby and decide to take their relationship to the next level. Also, another relationship gets a very intriguing (and unexpected) twist.

Do I have a soulmate?
Misawa had considered this more than once in his fifteen years. Not everyone did. Most people didn't, in fact.. But there were still that small fraction of people who not only did have someone that the universe wanted them to be with, but clearly marked them in some fashion or other. The methods varied; Kaiser Ryou carried tattered black wings on his back and had since the latter part of his first year. No one knew why exactly but rumor had it that his soulmate had somehow perished. Principal Samejima and Tome-san could hardly be stopped from showing off their marks that glowed whenever they were close enough to reach other. There were others, in so many different ways.
But Misawa had nothing. He saw color clearly, unlike Manjoume, and he'd never experienced any unusual dreams, such as what Asuka's friends Momoe and Junko shared. No one had ever said his name in a fashion that struck deep in his heart. He'd never been able to heal anyone by touching them, or vice versa. So either he'd never encountered his soulmate in a situation that would allow their souls to resonate or he just didn't have one.
I think I would rather not have one. They were, perhaps, more trouble than they were worth. He saw so many people who focused on that and ignored the important parts of life, such as achieving the greatest grades and making his mark on the world. He didn't think he would really have minded if he met such a person, but he refused to go out of his way to go looking for them.
And so he kept his focus on his studies - at least until Principal Samejima chose him to be one of the defenders of the Seven Spirit Gate Keys. A tiny part of him worried that perhaps something might spark with one of the Seven Stars - he didn't believe it; he would never be attracted to a dark duelist, not to someone who attacked unfairly and without care for others. But it wasn't completely impossible.
Darkness stood reveled as Asuka's brother. Not so much as a twitch.
Camula faded away, defeated, with a heartbreaking cry. Nothing at all. He didn't worry, not quite so much. Not on her account, at least.
A few days passed. Nothing happened - and then it did. People vanished and when Misawa and the others searched, they found a woman paying them to build an arena. The sight of her made Misawa's heart beat faster. Never before had he seen someone like her - tall and well muscled and with fierce eyes that stared right into him, reading him down to his soul. He'd never felt so known with a simple look before.
Taniya was her name. Taniya, the third of the Seven Stars. Misawa fought to get his mind where it belonged as the two of them dueled one another, and he did his best to ignore all of her talk about marriage. He'd long ago sworn that he'd only marry his soulmate, and if he didn't have one then he would simply do without. It wasn't that important. If it were, then his soulmate would appear. Simple as that.
Despite his best efforts, Taniya began to work through his defenses, sharp words slicing into places he'd never known had holes, into desires that he'd never known that he had.
I can't listen. I have to defend my Key! It didn't matter how beautiful Taniya was - which was very beautiful - or how strong - which was a lot - or anything else. He made an attempt at a strike - and saw right away that he'd made a very powerful mistake, as the battle turned around in her favor.
Misawa fell backwards, his eyes glazed over, barely hearing that Taniya wanted to duel him again now that she had his key. If she wanted to duel, then he would duel. Never before had he encountered an opponent like her. Juudai came close but the two of them were too different.
He started to get up as the doors closed and it was just the two of them - three if you counted her tiger - there. Misawa blinked slowly, getting his mind back together, and looked up to see Taniya standing in front of him, one hand no her hip, the other held out to him.
"Are you ready?" The Amazon asked, and he nodded slowly. He truly wasn't sure if he was, but he wasn't going to back down. This time he would win; he was certain of it. Whether or not he won back his Key didn't matter, not when he could impress her with his skills.
He raised his hand and set it in hers. She pulled him to his feet - and in the moment of the touch, Misawa's eyes widened and he swallowed, his entire body tingling. He'd touched a few people over the years, but never before had he experienced anything like this. He stumbled, trying to get himself put back together mentally and not having a great deal of luck. He opened his mouth, wanting to say something, but Taniya shook her head.
"I felt it too," she said, releasing his hand and crossing her arms. "But you're going to have to do better than that if you want to be my soulmate."
"Better?" Misawa wrenched the word out, still trying to get his head together and still not having a great deal of luck with it. "What do you mean?"
"If you can beat me in a duel even once, then I'll accept that you're my soulmate," Taniya told him, reaching for her deck again. "But if you can't, then that's it."
Misawa steeled himself up. "You'll see what i can do when I really try, then."
"You mean you haven't been trying so far?" Taniya snorted as she shuffled her deck. "You'd better start trying, then."
Misawa swore that he would do his best then and there. He would win! He would show her that he was capable of being so much more than she'd seen so far. His hand still tingled from that one moment of contact and he wished that he had time to think about it. But that would have to come later - perhaps not much later.
He didn't win. It wasn't often in that night of endless dueling that he could even scratch her life points. Misawa quickly understood that she was now playing at her very best, and when she did that, he stood no chance against her.
That made it all clearer than anything. He wasn't surprised that he had a soulmate of such a caliber - what else would he have had? Certainly no one lesser. And yet no matter how hard he tried, he couldn't do anything that would even mildly impress her.
What else could he do? She stood so far above him that he had no idea of what to do and with each duel, his strength grew less and less. Somewhere outside of the arena was the rest of the world and right now, it meant nothing at all.
I have to get better. I have to get stronger. He had no idea of how. But as the sun began to peek over the horizon and he realized how tired and hungry he was, Misawa decided that somehow he would do it. Whatever it took, he would prove himself worthy of her. No matter how long it took. He would make sure that it happened.
Taniya deserved the best. So he would strive to be the best for her.

Notes: It took a bit for me to settle on writing this. But I’m glad I did. Tigershipping doesn’t get the respect it deserves. She helped him become a much better person – something he drastically needed.

A random thought: so like all those missing students did no one ever do anything? like the ones from the blue dorm were covered up we know that (i don’t know how they kept that under wraps from the families but i mean. they go to nerd school so i guess their parents don’t care) but i guess i mean more like. the island is fucking dangerous. there’s an active volcano that isn’t barred off, a fucking lab? that just sorta exists? like it came in for the fucking goddamn monkey episode and then it kept just popping up? and no one cares that a ton of illegal stuff just goes on there? do students use it for anything? they must, they’re teenagers; maybe its like a meth lab or something at some point i dunno. you can really tell the parents don’t care cause kids go off the grid, judai went missing (cause he was in s p a c e), shou tried to sail himself back home on a fucking shitty ass raft that one time, the entire FUCKING SCHOOL goes missing alongside the entirety of the staff and students and then the school finally returns and then kids go missing again, they come back except for one who just kinda. shows up in a pile of smoke and no one’s like ‘what the fuck?’ oh yeah and then like. god shows up right in the schoolyard or something. so uh. hey who’s watching this island? does anyone care? there’s no one responsible on the entire island.
An unpopular opinion: i don’t think the cast is too bloated. at least, not to the extent that everyone else seems to think. like yeah i think that more time to flesh out certain characters would be great but with what we have i think everyone’s handled relatively well? misawa’s deal is clearly intended (or at least in the way that the writers realised they’d not been using him and decided to keep it like that cause it was funny- which it is by the way) and he got a good ending i’d say. asuka’s deal was never gonna be great being like the one main female character til rei became main in season three but she wasn’t too badly done either i wouldn’t say- she was there for her arc and her moments, and it’s not like she didn’t do anything in season four (even if a lot of what she did was there to further judai’s character, she wasn’t out of character for any of it and exerted her annoyance reasonably). like. i think everyone forgets that a lot of characters show up and have an arc then leave or linger and are there when needed after their arc’s over. i don’t want to ramble too much and it’s a bit hard to try and explain what i mean. everyone has their part and they’re there when it’s important to their character or it’s generally in-character for them to be there even if it’s not important to them. i also think it’s interesting though that there’s some off-screen development. i think that may annoy some people but i think it’s cool. lets the audience know that these characters have lives that exist even when they’re not on screen.
My Canon OTP: i don’t think yugioh knows the concept? i mean you could (and i might) argue that soulshipping is technically canon? but also you could very much argue not so. whatever.
edit: i realised misawa and tania’s pretty much canon so uh. that one if y’all ain’t accepting soulshipping.
My Non-canon OTP: depending on what you’re arguing it’s soulshipping
Most Badass Character: austin and jim both deserve a medal guys c’mon you can’t say they don’t. there’s a lotta badass gx characters (depending on your definition i suppose) but those two fucking rocked the dark world
Most Epic Villain: yubel because i’m biased and also they produced one if not my absolute favourite duel
Pairing I am not a fan of: fianceshipping(?). you can like it if you want, i’m just not here for it. not here for most asuka ships honestly? but y’know. it is what it is. my views on asuka’s sexuality aside i don’t think any chemistry really had the chance to build up between them. asuka was there to be the level-headed one which can work as chemistry but they never had time to talk together properly so it never had time to build up, y’know? i’ve said y’know a lot in this ask huh. anyway. i think season four’s a good show as to another reason i don’t think they work well together. asuka’s not only stubborn but she can get really annoyed really easily at people who have no regard for her feelings and i understand that judai had a lot of hang ups at that point but even before then, he never was that mindful about feelings. that’s literally how season three went. on judai’s side she’d be more of a dead weight to him in terms of how he is. he’s someone who leaps before they look and asuka’s not enough of a ‘mum friend’ character to hold him back i wouldn’t say. she’d watch to make sure nothing bad happened, but she’s not a good fit for him when you try and really nuance it. they work as friends because they don’t work romantically, i think, in a weird way. if that makes sense? i rambled but i have a lot of thoughts on the nuances on ships. like i’ve talked a lot about how asuka doesn’t fit well with judai because of her responsible nature which may seem hypocritical considering i love soulshipping but again. nuances. i digress.
tldr; fianceshipping cause of nuances. i have too much time on my hands.
Character I feel the writers screwed up: uuuuuuuhhhhh… i don’t know? i don’t think there are any i can think off the top of my head that makes me actively annoyed at their end game. they all had their ups and downs. echo maybe? she got fucked, she deserved better.
Favourite Friendship: hard in a different way. i love them all. pretty much everyone with judai, shou and kenzan, that weird thing edo and ryo had going on, asuka and ryo is slept on (i wish we got to see them be more friendly), as is ryo and fubuki for that matter, rei and martin is especially slept on i love those two stupid fucking kids, that weird thing shou and ojama yellow had going on (man the dark world was a bit weird for the marufujis huh), manjoume and his cards in general (but yeah mostly the ojamas of fucking course), kenzan and rei, austin and jim, edo and saiou (slept on again. so many are slept on)… everyone. i love all their friendships. friendship pile.
Character I most identify with: i couldn’t really say? i relate with different characters in different ways. i think that if you fused austin and johan together you’d get closest to me. that doesn’t make sense but it also does. think about it- don’t, actually
Character I wish I could be: none of em. have you fuckin seen those kids? traumatised, the lot of em! if i had to choose maybe hayato? y’know, there for some fun, made some good friends, got to experience a mild threat to the world, grew some, got a good paying, stable job. that’s the life. wonder what he was up to while all the shit at duel academia was going down.
