Exciting new development in the Thorn x Stonemover fandom!!

Aside from a single drabble, one fanfiction where they never appear at all, one troll fic that lists them as a pairing when it turns out that they literally turned into lemons, one fanfiction where they were never shown together onscreen, we now have a masterpiece!! A stunning jewel in the Thorn x Stonemover fandom!!

The Desert Sky at Dawn by Sandshadow9 on wattpad, fanfiction.net, and archiveofourown is a heart-wrenchingly wonderful fanfiction about Queen Thorn and Stonemover meeting up and finally having their chance to resolve their feelings with each other, as both continue on their separate paths with new loves, and new lives... :')

Oh my god, you're THE AUTHOR of that one Mastermind x Chameleon fic on ao3! I'm a huge fan of your work, but I don't have an ao3 account, plus they disabled commenting, but I just wanna say that I'm a huge fan! Keep up the good work! Also, though I've personally never really put relations on the island for Stonemover in my headcanons (makes him more sad lonely British orphan coded to me), I personally am *loving* your idea of Stonemover and Mastermind being brothers. Just a worried older brother faced with so much after they found out about his animus magic and how people on the island whispered of his future madness and how he should be avoided, and the younger, nerdier brother who never fit in due to his nerdiness, and the older just wants to look out for the younger... Though I think I recall Mastermind mentioning in your fic that they grew apart? I'm not sure how you envisioned it, but after reading your fic, I really thought about maybe Stonemover returning to the island, only to see Mastermind gaining some success and he has Farsight and Mastermind claims that they're having a dragonet, while he remains convinced that his own romance can never work out, and then that's when Stonemover decides to leave the island, because he thinks that Mastermind no longer needs him? It'll sure be a doozy if they ever reunite. Maybe they'll figure out how to use the telephone? Maybe Sunny and Starflight will suddenly find out about each other's fathers being related? Anyway, sorry for the ramble, but I think that your ideas are really cool!

FIrstly, thank you thank you thank you!! This ask made me so happy to read, I'm so glad you like my stuff!! And now I'm going to ramble back at you because this stuff has been stuck inside my head for so long and I need to get it out!

And about some of what you said-- yes, Mastermind and Stonemover do grow apart, and some of it is some kind of rivalry, but it's also kind of two sided? Like Stonemover is jealous of his brother being able to do just do all this stuff he was never particularly good at, while Mastermind is a bit jealous of Stonemover not seeming to have to try to do things for the tribe since he just has it in his talons (and also he's a bit salty about his brother breaking the laws of physics and sometimes drives himself a little bonkers trying to come up with scientific explanations for feats of animus magic), and they both don't understand why the other seems to be suffering, even though it's the same reason: ludicrous expectations and severe overwork.

Now, about Farsight and Thorn and all that, although it's definitely an interesting angle, I do personally prefer to sideline it just a bit. Like Stonemover knows his brother has a girlfriend, but not much else, and Mastermind thinks it's a bit funny that Stonemover keeps hanging out in the desert, but hey you can see the sun there, and he's not one to judge. They can freak about them both having children around the same age later when they reunite and feel bad for not paying attention to each other and their struggles more.

Oh yeah their reunion! It is, as you put it, a doozy. Provided nothing changes, it should happen in chapter twenty-one of my current longfic. [(Re)Building Bridges, the one "I had a brother once..." was impatiently spun off from.] It takes that long because Stonemover can't really use a phone from where he's stuck to the floor, and Mastermind never told anybody except for Chameleon about his dead brother, and he doesn't tell anybody else about his dead brother (at least not by name), and so nobody realises they're related until M & C end up down at JMA for plot reasons.

So yeah! Mastermind is horrified by the fact that his brother felt the need to turn himself to stone and feels terrible about it, and then he has to tell him about the RainWing experiments and his intense moral failing and every other terrible thing that happened to him after Stonemover left. Then they have a mutual moment of understanding when Stonemover explains how he was forced to do *something* bad with his animus magic (I haven't decided on what yet) that pushed him over the edge and prompted him to leave, although it's really not the same they can still sympathize. There is lots of screaming, and crying, and Mastermind is kind of mad his brother was practically left to die in a cave after doing this to himself even after others fell out because somebody needs to be, and they find a way to keep in touch and promise they won't ever fall apart or resent each other ever again.

Meanwhile everybody else, who were preoccupied in the plot reasons, is confused as all hell as to why those two (Mastermind especially) are acting that way and Chameleon is like "oh yeah that's his dead brother" and then everybody else freaks out but differently because 1. even though there's no classes right now, they had a bit of a situation going on in their school 2. two of them just got surprise cousin'd 3. oh yeah also this weird green rainwing is here too 4. they still have plot reasons to deal with and finally 5. oh moons there are way too many things going on at once!! It's a whole situation, but the brothers reunite and they stop crying eventually and it's fine. :)

I’ve never been a fan of Thorn x Smolder for the simple reason that I just don’t think they would jive like that, but more than that I don’t think I can accept the implications that Thorn has a type and that type is pathetic and shady men.

Smolder and Stonemover both the type of guy to keep secrets, to know more than they let on, but also probably can’t open a jar of pickles and would easily get their asses beat by a child.

And Thorn is into that

OKAY FOR THORN

She’s one of our favorite characters I love her SO MUCH. Her dynamic with the scorpion den is incredibly interesting and how she basically went from “oh I’m the big boss poster child of it” to now running the whole kingdom and begrudgingly leaving vulture to deal with it. Thorn and vultures dynamic is really interesting to me aswell with how well they play off each other I personally imagine them both as morally grey but on opposite ends of the spectrum, thorn being the “cares about people but only certain people/kingdom and will do what she thinks is best for them despite maybe hurting others in the process but it’s okay it’s best for them” similar to how I imagine qibli that’s where he got it from and vulture heavily leaning towards the morally grey of “oh I’m doing what’s best for me and me only sorry 😂😂😂” I do wish however when thorn became queen Tui kept the more morally ehhhhh parts of thorn she kind of gets toned down when she becomes queen even though a whole thing of her character is that. She ran part of the scorpion den your moral compass is going to be iffy after that yknow???? I wish she didn’t try to make her just silly she’s silly AND fucked up. Morally grey thorn my beloved and it just fits her character as a whole more!!! Her being queen felt like a convenient way to put an end to book 5 but honestly I don’t mind it that much? I liked her character more in Sunny’s book but her being queen is an okay move not the best but it could’ve gone alot worse. Id think that she was BY FAR not the best option to be queen if she was actually kept like book 5 her but the eye of onyx was like “well. everyone sucks.” I also think about her and stone mover a lot not as partners but T4t then they got divorced and now they’re buddies and thorn visits stonemover sometimes to tell him all the weird stuff that’s happened in the sand kingdom and also to talk about qibli and sunny. Even though thorn and morrowseer had only one interaction over stonemover I find their quick conversation very… interesting? It’s street-smarts vs people smarts and kinda wish we got a little bit more of that. I don’t particularly like thorn x smolder, mainly because headcanon thorn as a lesbian, iffy age gap and also don’t really like the pairing with thorn because that also goes against thorn not being royalty and standing against the royals but then dating a prince. I think of them as just buddies who got thrown into the limelight of royalty either being born into it or gaining it and bonding over the fact that they have way too much spotlight on them!! Smolder also shows thorn all of the weird little hidden areas of the stronghold (like those bookshelf’s that rotate and then bam there’s a whole other room back there) and thorn helps smolder with coming back into society after the Sandwing war of succession because it literally just happened

FOR SMOLDER

Smolder doesn’t really hold that much space in my brain? I REALLY like his design and honestly headcanon him to look very similar to char I do actually really enjoy him as a character minus the thorn stuff, specifically I really like him in deserters where he’s the cowardly prince and continues to stay that way. I do enjoy how he builds around oasis as this all powerful dragon if a PRINCE has to act this way in order to survive hell what’s the queen like??? His relationship with palm also is a bit sad and again goes to show oasis as this all controlling the queen was to where he feared himself and his girlfriend would be put to death for just existing together. He’s like those princes in fairy tales where “oh I’m the big strong knight here to save the princess oh!! Dragon scary AHHH” and he runs off and I think that’s a really funny contrast to thorn who is exactly the opposite, I’d also think he’d kinda act as a mediator to thorn when she gets too pissed and also helps her navigate the political system of pyrriha because hell she knows nothing about it and he’s been a prince all his life. I think they’re buddies, and as it stands smolder in canon for me is eehhh story-roll wise. Love him personality wise but he just really doesn’t have enough on him to call him my favorite, neutral about him canonically love the one in my head though.

I’m definitely gonna do another post about those two’s relationship because I have a lot thought up for them, Shark specifically, I may or may not have an entire backstory planned for him and it may or may not revolve around him being the result of the Queen’s affair and him struggling to find a place in the royal family so he self projects on and takes care of Coral’s sons I dunno 😳

But shipping wise!! I surprisingly have a good lot of obscure ships! I’m not big on shipping, I used to be more into it (sweats nervously at that moonbli or winerwatcher debate) but now I just vibe with whatever I think is cute :) Here are my most obscure ones -

Tsunami x Io - I think I’ve hinted at this one before but I’m not sure. Basically I said “haha what if my comfort characters kissed?” And then said “oh right they spend a good portion of an entire book in jail together” and now I draw dumb fluffy Tsu x Io stuff on Valentine’s Day, heres this year’s piece if your interested -

Vulture x Morrowseer - This one is more of a joke heh, I just thought it would be funny if those two met when busting Thorn & Stonemover on one of their dates and then the two just,, are dating now. I find it so funny, they can complain about,, I dunno Queen Thorn together hehjvsg

General Ivory x Commander Tempest - OKAY I SWEAR BOTH THESE CHARACTERS EXISTbhjvgj Listen Listen, yes they have never met in canon, no they aren’t even part of the same alliance, but hear me out. If Crystal and Gharial can get together because their army’s had to fight a common enemy during the war, why not two high ranking officers?? Ivory, powerful respected loyal Icewing lady, Commander Tempest, a loud spunky loyal Seawing Lady. I can just imagine them having dumb rivalry’s and then like anger kissing. Sad thing Tempest died away from Ivory though. I just love Tempest and thought it would be funny if she had a random Icewing girlfriend because why not. I wrote an entire fic about Tempest (which I may post here??? It’s kinda crusty though so jkhv) I look for any excuse to make her important 💔 (I dunno their exact ages though and I think Ivory is an older general as she was part of the War of the Sandwing Succession so I just think that the two of em are the same age or around that djhs)

If anyone wants to tell me about their obscure ships I would love to hear!! your daily dose of Thorn x Stonemover

This is slightly sappy... but what if Thorn used to trace the stars on the underside of Stonemover's wings and she'd be like "yep, I've seen that constellation before" and then point at a random patch of stars in the night sky but then she later gets serious about it and actually starts naming constellations on his wings and the entire time Stonemover has to lie there and not laugh because it tickles when her claws skim too close to where his wings meet his body.

Back in the day, Stonemover and Thorn used to have "arguments" with no real heat in them over who'd be the little spoon for the night. Stonemover wanted to be the little spoon again because he always liked snuggling into Thorn's warm wings. Sometimes, he tried to curl up into a ball so Thorn could hold even more of him. On the other hand, Thorn wanted to be the little spoon because Stonemover used to hold her to his chest like a teddy bear and mumble sleepy things into her ear. That's not even getting into the tug-of-war they'd get over the blanket and about the fact that sometimes Stonemover would roll over and squish Thorn beneath his arm. Or about his incessant snoring.

If Stonemover and Thorn stayed together he would have been the malewife to her girlboss, hmph. 

the thing about Stonemover is that he loves physical contact but never really received it after a certain point so he winds up getting blown away and silently treasures it when Thorn gives him little kisses on the cheek or nuzzles into him or brushes a wing with him.

Thorn once took Stonemover to the rat circus in the Scorpion Den where they watched performing rats. Rat trapeze artists. Rats on a tightrope. Dancing rats. You name it. (in truth, Stonemover was watching the rats. Thorn was busy watching his face because she liked seeing him smile).

What if Thorn got so tired of stretching up on her tippy toes to whisper something to the underside of Stonemover's jaw (she is very short, okay) that they just developed a thing where she'd nudge him a little and that's their secret little thing that tells him to lean over and duck his head so she can properly whisper in his ear.
