"GODS AND GENERALS" (2003) Review
Tumblr media
"GODS AND GENERALS" (2003) Review In 1993, producer Ted Turner and director Ronald Maxwell released "GETTYSBURG", a film adaptation of Michael Shaara's 1974 novel, "The Killer Angels". Shaara's son, Jeffrey, wrote a prequel to his novel called "Gods and Generals" in 1996. Both Turner and Maxwell teamed up again in 2002-2003 to make a film adaptation of the latter novel.
Set between April 1861 and May 1863, "GODS AND GENERALS" related the American Civil War events leading up to the Battle of Gettysburg. Although the movie began with Virginia-born Robert E. Lee's resignation from the U.S. Army, following his home state's secession from the Union; the meat of the film focused on the personal and professional life of Confederate general Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson during those two years. It also touched on how Bowdoin College professor Joshua L. Chamberlain became second-in-command of the 20th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, his military training and his experiences during the Battle of Fredricksburg. But trust me . . . most of the movie is about Jackson. It covered his departure from the Virginia Military Institute; his experiences with the famous "Stonewall Brigade"; his experiences at the Battle of Bull Run; his relationships with both his wife Mary Anna, his servant Jim Lewis and a five-year-old girl from an old Virginia family; and his experiences at the Battle Chancelorville. "GODS AND GENERALS" had its virtues. One of them turned out to be Michael Z. Hanan's production designs. Hanan and his team did a superb job in re-creating Virginia of the early 1860s. I was especially impressed by their recreation of mid-19th century Fredricksburg during that famous battle in December 1862. I wonder who had the bright idea of using Harper's Ferry, West Virgina for that particular setting. Hanan's work was ably supported by Kees Van Oostrum's photography and Gregory Bolton's art direction. Oostrum's photography and Corky Ehlers' editing was also put to good use during the Fredricksburg battle sequence. And I really enjoyed the costumes designed by Richard La Motte, Maurice Whitlock and Gamila Smith. All three did their homework in re-creating the fashions and uniforms of the period. Unlike "GETTYSBURG", "GODS AND GENERALS" featured major female characters. I suspect this gave the trio the opportunity to indulge their romantic streak with crinolines and hoop skirts galore. There were some admirable performances in "GODS AND GENERALS". Frankie Faison gave a warm performance as Thomas Jackson's freedman cook, Jim Lewis. I was also impressed by Brian Mallon's subtle portrayal of the concerned Major General Winfield Hancock, a role he had first portrayed in the 1993 film. It is a pity that Bruce Boxleitner did not receive more screen time for his role as Lieutenant General James Longstreet. He had taken over the role from Tom Berenger and gave a pretty solid performance. But alas, he did not receive enough time to do anything with the role. Alex Hyde-White gave an interesting portrayal of Major General Ambrose Burnside, whose decisions led the Union Army to disaster at Fredricksburg. Matt Letscher was very memorable as the 20th Maine's founder and first regimental commander, Colonel Adelbert Ames. I could also say the same for Mira Sorvino's portrayal of Frances "Fanny" Chamberlain, Colonel Chamberlain's passionate and pessimistic wife. In fact, I believe she had the good luck to portray the most interesting female character in the movie. So . . . what about the other performances? What about the stars Stephen Lang, Jeff Daniels and Robert Duvall? I am not claiming that they gave bad performances. Honestly, they did the best they could. Unfortunately, all three and most of the other cast members had the bad luck to be saddled with very uninteresting characterizations, bad dialogue and self-righteous speeches. In other words, I found them a little BORING!!! I am sorry, but I truly did. First of all, Lang's Thomas Jackson dominated the film just a little too much. Why bother calling this movie "GODS AND GENERALS"? Why not call it "THE LIFE AND TIMES OF STONEWALL JACKSON"? Even worse, Jackson is portrayed in such an unrelenting positive light that by the time the movie came around to his fate after the Battle of Chancelorville, I practically sighed with relief. Jeff Daniels' Joshua Chamberlain did nothing to rouse my interest in his story. In fact, he disappeared for a long period of time before he made his reappearance during the Battle of Fredricksburg sequence. And his appearance in that particular sequence was completely marred by him and other members of the 20th Maine Volunteer Regiment quoting William Shakespeare's "JULIUS CAESAR", while marching toward Marye's Heights. Oh God, I hate that scene so much! As for Robert Duvall's Robert Lee . . . what a waste of his time. Ronald Maxwell's script did not allow the actor any opportunity to explore Lee's character during those two years leading to Gettysburg. I realize this is not Duvall's fault, but I found myself longing for Martin Sheen's portrayal of the Confederate general in "GETTYSBURG". There is so much about this movie that I dislike. One, Maxwell's portrayal of the movie's two main African American characters - Jim Lewis and a Fredricksburg slave named Martha, as portrayed by actress/historian Donzaleigh Abernathy - struck me as completely lightweight. Now, I realized that there were black slaves and paid employees who managed to maintain a friendly or close relationship with their owner or employer. But in "GODS AND GENERALS", Lewis seemed quite friendly with his employer Jackson and Martha seemed obviously close to the family that owned her, the Beales. I could have tolerated if Lewis or Martha had been friendly toward those for whom they worked. But both of them? I get the feeling that Maxwell was determined to avoid any of the racial and class tensions between the slave/owner relationship . . . or in Lewis' case, the employee/employer relationship. How cowardly. In fact, this lack of tension seemed to permeate all of the relationships featured in "GODS AND GENERALS". Aside from one Union commander who berated his men for looting in Fredricksburg, I can barely recall any scenes featuring some form of anger or tension between the major characters. Everyone either seemed to be on his or her best behavior. And could someone please explain why every other sentence that came out of the mouths of most characters seemed to be a damn speech? I realize that Maxwell was trying to re-create the semi-formality of 19th century American dialogue. Well . . . he failed. Miserably. The overindulgence of speeches reminded me of the dialogue from the second NORTH AND SOUTH miniseries, 1986's "NORTH AND SOUTH: BOOK II". But the biggest problem of "GODS AND GENERALS" was that it lacked a central theme. The majority of the movie seemed to be about the Civil War history of Thomas Jackson. But the title and Shaara's novel told a different story. However, I do not believe a detailed adaptation of the novel would have done the trick. Like the movie, it lacked a central theme or topic. Perhaps I am being too arrogant in believing I know what would have made the story worked. After all, it is not my story. Jeff Shaara was entitled to write it the way he wanted. And Ronald Maxwell was entitled to adapt Shaara's story the way he wanted. But I do know that if I had written "GODS AND GENERALS", it would have been about the Battle of Fredricksburg. It turned out to be the only part of the movie that I found interesting.

Eschweiler Scrapbooks
While seeking out Decorative Sunday material this week, I came across several sets of scrapbooks from the prolific Milwaukee architectural firm Eschweiler & Eschweiler. Some of the scrapbooks contain architectural postcards organized by theme (such as “details,” exemplified in images 2-4 from volume one of the six volume [Scrapbooks Containing Architectural Postcards]. Others contain a more random assortment of magazine clippings, postcards, and photographs, pasted into old catalogs of Thomas Maddock's Sons Company of New Jersey and plumbing hardware from the J. L. Mott Iron Works company in New York (volumes one and two of Scrapbook of architectural photographs). While there are no clues to suggest who was responsible for assembling the scrapbooks, it’s possible they date to between 1966 and 1974, when the firm was known as Eschweiler, Schneider & Associates. See image captions for detailed descriptions.
Founded in 1892 by Alexander Eschweiler, later helmed by Alexander’s three sons, the firm had over 1,100 commissions in Milwaukee and beyond until the firm’s closing in 1975. The Eschweiler firm was known for their grounding in traditional style. Comparing Eschweiler with his more internationally famous contemporary Frank Lloyd Wright, the late UWM Architecture professor Douglas Ryhn purported that “there is no similarity in styles but it looks like they were inspired by the same feelings. Wright individualized, personalized architectural expression. Eschweiler took this integrity and used it with images that had already proven themselves.”
While many buildings from the firm have been demolished, there are over 80 extant buildings, including several of the luxurious East Side residences along Bradford Avenue, Newberry Boulevard, and Lake Drive, as well as the Milwaukee-Downer Quad (Holton, Merrill, Johnston and Greene Halls) on UWM’s campus (which command a large portion of the view from Special Collections). Other notable Eschweiler & Eschweiler buildings include the Wisconsin Gas Building, the Wisconsin Telephone Company, and Plymouth Church.

For the AHS ask, EVERYTHING
AHH THANK YOU YOU’RE A SAINT
1. What’s your favorite season and why?
Murder House. The feeling of it, the aesthetics, the characters, just everything. It’s just so good.
2. What season is the worst in your opinion and why?
I don’t actually think there’s been a bad season but my least favourite is probably Cult or Roanoke. I absolutely loved the writing and the concept but I wasn’t super attached to any of the characters in Roanoke (apart from Sophie & Audrey, really) but I did love it. Cult was amazing with what it stood for and the whole story and everything, the only reason why I’ve put it here is becasue it’s the one season I’d struggle to want watch again.
3. Have you ever had a dream about AHS character? What was it about?
Not that I remember, but I had a dream about Evan Peters’ character Quicksilver from X-Men. I don’t remember it though because it was like three years ago.
4. If you could play any AHS character, who would it be?
Definitely Violet because I’m good at pretending to be pissed off when I’m actually sad. Also Zoe because I just really want to like become her. Also I’d steal their outfits.
5. What theme should the next season be?
I know it’s cliche but I’d really love a zombie apocalypse theme. Like the same vibe as 28 Days Later but with Evan Peters, Taissa Farmiga, Billie Lourd & Angelica Ross playing the main characters.
6. Pick a character to dress as on Halloween.
ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE-
7. Your most favorite charater of all & why.
Zoe, Kit & Violet due to the fact that i either relate to them, want to become them, adore them, want to date them, want to steal their clothes or all of the above.
8. What character do you hate the most?
Kai probably. Would beat the shit out of that little inc*l, racist bitch.
9. Your first AHS crush.
Violet for sure.
10. Your current AHS crush.
Zoe & Kit mostly.
11. If you die at the Murder House, what death it would be?
I mean Violet’s death sounded like something I’d do when I was 9 and suicidal but now I feel like Hayden would kill me for fun or something. Or maybe that freaky ass baby thing in the basement.
12. You’re in the Asylum. What for?
Being bisexual lol.
13. Mary Eunice or Misty?
Misty! I don’t talk about her enough, I love her.
14. Oliver Thredson, James March or Dandy Mott?
I think Dandy is the most interesting villain out of the 3. James March do be kinda hot though ngl. Thredson’s just fucking terrifying
15. Describe your feelings about the Countess in one gif.
Tumblr media
16. Your AHS OTP?
zyle, violate, zadison, brodonna & gritma
17. What would you change in “AHS Apocalypse”?
I’d give Zoe more screen time and emphasize how powerful she is, make Kyle actually be there and be happy!!!, not make those boring straight kids have the next anti christ, confirm that time doesn’t affect ghosts so Violet & Tate are still together even after Mallory reversed time, show us more about Gallant and tell us his fucking last name, have Mallory free Madison from hell, tell us Queenie’s last name and give her more screen time, more Marie Laveau
18. Favorite Evan Peters character?
KIT KIT KIT KIT K-
19. Favorite Sarah Paulson character?
Lana Winters 1000%
20. Favorite Jessica Lange character?
Jude! I loved her character arc and her relationship with Kit, Julia, Thomas.
21. What was the most brutal death of all in your opinion?
Pretty much all The Butcher’s kills in Roanoke
22. What was the saddest scene of all?
The scene when Zoe and Queenie die in s8, Kyle’s reaction to Zoe’s death in s3, Violet finding out she’s dead, and any scene where Kit’s being hurt gets me as well
23. The most annoying character of all.
Ivy Mayfair-Richards & John Lowe
24. Lana Winters or Ally Mayfair-Richards?
Lana, definitely.
25. The most dangerous character of all?
Probably Micheal since he’s the literal anti-Christ
26. What’s your favorite witch?
ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE ZOE ZO-
27. What character are you gay for?
Literally all of Angela Basset’s characters, Zoe, Violet, Brooke, Donna, The Countess and a lot more lol.
28. Tate Langdon or Michael Langdon?
Tate 10000000000%. Micheal WANTED to hurt people and did for fun. My boy Tate was just a sensitive teenager who got controlled by evil forces.
29. What character’s destiny would you like to change and how?
Kit, Grace & Alma’s. I want them to all have lived happily ever after together with their kids, all three of them in love, no one gets cancer, no one gets abducted again, no one gets murdered, no one gets sent to an asylum.
30. Which one of all characters is most likely to become your friend?
Probably Violet. She’s a cool, broody teenaged girl with good taste in fashion and music.
31. Favorite Naomi Grossman character?
Pepper.
32. Would you rather end up in Asylum or in Murder House?
Murder House for sure. I can get Tate & Violet to date me as well each other. Also at least Murder House is a gorgeous building filled with some nice people. Briarcliffe is just a miserable torture chamber filled with murderers and people with serious mental illnesses that hinder them from functioning properly.
33. Favorite gay character?
Definitely Lana.
34. Who’s worse: Elsa Mars or Constance Langdon (and why)?
I love Constance’s character because she’s so interesting but she’s said some racist and homophobic things were as Elsa was just vibing.
35. The most repusling character of all?
Kai & Thredson. They‘re literally so disgusting.
36. Describe your feelings about Michael Langdon in one gif.
Tumblr media
37. Your favorite opening titles?
1984 & coven
38. Which one of all characters is most likely to become your enemy?
Kai. He’d argue with me on the internet and then I’d block him immediately
39. Would you rather have sex with Twisty or end up in LaLaurie’s basement?
LaLaurie’s basement. I’ll just kill her and free everyone.
40. Jeff or Mutt? Why?
Jeff becasuse Evan Peters

Man's Impact on the Environment Huntly Castle Aberdeenshire, Scotland
Huntly Castle is a ruined castle in Huntly in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was the ancestral home of the chief of Clan Gordon, Earl of Huntly.
Architecturally the L plan castle consists of a well-preserved five-storey tower with an adjoining great hall and supporting buildings. Areas of the original ornate facade and interior stonework remain. A mound in the grounds of the castle is all that remains of an earlier 12th century motte. Originally named Strathbogie, the castle was granted to Sir Adam Gordon of Huntly in the 14th century. King Robert the Bruce was a guest of the castle in 1307 prior to his defeat of the Earl of Buchan.
It was fired in 1452 by a force under the command of Archibald Douglas, Earl of Moray. In 1449 the king was at war with the powerful Black Douglases, the Gordons stood on the king's side and, with their men involved in the south of the country, the Earl of Moray, a brother of the Earl of Douglas, took the opportunity to sack the Gordon lands, setting Huntly Castle ablaze. The Gordons returned and quickly destroyed their enemies.
Although the castle was burned to the ground, a grander castle was built in its place. In 1496, the pretender to the English throne, Perkin Warbeck, was married to Lady Catherine Gordon the daughter of George Gordon, 2nd Earl of Huntly, witnessed by King James IV of Scotland at Edinburgh. James IV came to Huntly in October 1501 and gave gifts of money to the stonemasons working on the castle. In October 1503, James IV came again and played in a shooting contest at a "prop", and he came back again in the following October. These visits were part of his annual pilgrimage to the shrine of Saint Duthac at Tain.
William MacKintosh was executed on 23 August 1550 at Castle Strathbogie.
Wings were added to the castle in the 16th and 17th centuries. The English diplomat Thomas Randolph stayed two nights in September 1562, and wrote that the castle was "fayer, beste furnishede of anye howse that I have seen in thys countrie." An eyewitness description of the death of George Gordon, 5th Earl of Huntly in 1576, compiled by Richard Bannatyne gives some details of how the castle was used. The Earl suffered a stroke, or a collapse caused by food-poisoning, while playing football outside the Castle on the Green. He was taken through the outer-gate to his bedchamber in the round tower of the palace block, which was then called the "New Warke of Strathbogie." The Earl's bedchamber was adjacent to his "Grit Chalmer", the Great Chamber. After the Earl died, his body was laid out in the "Chamber of Dais", another name for the Great Chamber, and his valuables were secured in the bedchamber. After the Earl's steward left the Castle a number of alleged supernatural events occurred beginning with the sudden collapse of one of the servants in the "Laich Chalmer", Low Chamber. This "Laich Chalmer" was in another part of the castle, under a stair opposite the "Auld Hall." On the following day a servant went up to the Gallery at the top of the "New Warke" where spices (which were precious) were stored. This servant and two companions also collapsed and when revived complained of feeling cold. After the Earl's body was embalmed and taken to the chapel, his brother sat on a bench in the Hall by the Great Chamber door, and heard unexplained sounds from the chamber. It was said that "there is not a live thing bigger than a mouse may enter in that chamber with the door locked."
In 1640 the Castle was occupied by the Scottish Covenantor army under Major-General Robert Monro (d. 1680). James Gordon Parson of Rothiemay tells us how the house "was preserved from being rifled or defaced, except some emblems and imagery, which looked somewhat popish and superstitious lycke; and therefore, by the industry of one captain James Wallace (one of Munro's foote captaines) were hewd and brocke doune off the frontispiece of the house; but all the rest of the frontispiece containing Huntly's scutcheon, etc, was left untouched, as it stands to this daye."
Captured in October 1644, the castle was briefly held by James Graham, 1st Marquess of Montrose against the Duke of Argyll. In 1647 it was gallantly defended against General David Leslie by Lord Charles Gordon, but its 'Irish' garrison was starved into surrender. Savage treatment was meted out, for the men were hanged and their officers beheaded. In December of the same year Huntly himself was captured and on his way to execution at Edinburgh was detained, by a refinement of cruelty, in his own mansion. His escort were shot against its walls. In 1650 Charles II visited briefly on his way to the Battle of Worcester, defeat and exile. The Civil War brought an end to the Gordon of Huntly family's long occupation of the castle.
In 1689, during the first Jacobite rising, the castle was briefly the headquarters for Viscount Dundee and his Jacobite army, at the end of April, just after the start of the revolt. However, by the early eighteenth century the castle was already in decay and providing material for predatory house builders in the village. In 1746, during a later Jacobite rising, it was occupied by British government troops. Thereafter, it became a common quarry until a groundswell of antiquarian sentiment in the 19th century came to the rescue of the noble pile.
Huntly Castle remained under the ownership of the Clan Gordon until 1923. Today, the remains of the castle are cared for by Historic Environment Scotland as a scheduled monument.
Pure Strength I, a major international strongman competition, was held on the grounds of Huntly Castle in 1987. The winner of the contest was Jón Páll Sigmarsson of Iceland.

CHAQUE HOMME EST UNE ÎLE (Thierry Fontaine)
