Thank you again for all of those still with me, I hope you’re enjoying the story thus far. If you’re wanting to make suggestions for future parts of the story, please feel free to leave comments. I’d love to hear more about your thoughts! Last time, we were finding out how the information is given to Star, and the results show up that:

1 The mayor himself is more than happy to talk.

Sorry, this one got a bit long on me.

Having filled up, Star left Luna’s enchanting music behind to knock on the door to the Town Hall. The squat stone and wood building being only slightly better kept than the rest of the town. Instead of finding some bored bureaucratic servant barely awake at their post, she was greeted by the mayor himself.

“WELCOME! Welcome!” the portly man proclaimed as he opened the door and ushered her into the hall. “I’m Mayor Gregor, and welcome to Tricreek! I see your bard friend has drawn quite the crowd. Quite the crowd indeed. How wonderful!”

With a hearty laugh, he stroked the bushy white mustache that consumed the entire area of his face above his lips and going well into his rosy cheeks. “Now you must be curious about all the going ons about the town, I dare say.”

“Actually mayor, I was wondering if there were any messages from Castledale? Star Crescent would be the name they’d be under,” the poor mage student cut in gently, trying to be about her business.

“Oh of course, of course, pardon the mess, I gave the scribes a chance to go enjoy the bard, young people you know?” he chuckled as he meandered over to the shelves, and began going through one marked ‘Castledale’ above it. Pulling out a set of reading glasses he settled them on his nose and began going through the sheaf of papers. “Let’s see… No, no, notice of the college of magic being closed to new admissions temporarily due to the magic disruption, no, no, ah, here we are. A letter from the dean to you.”

Holding out the folded letter, she recognized the wax seal and took it. It was from the college, and probably important, however she felt like indulging the mayor. “Now that the official business is finished, I noticed that you have a druidic presence in town, were they a part of the founding?”

It felt odd, pushing off her duties and self-imposed quest to restore magic to learn more about a town that was so close to her goal, but she knew that her thirst for knowledge would not let her leave such a font of lore and wisdom untapped. Perhaps, there was something in the history that could guide her further in unlocking magic once again.

“Oh right you are! Sharp eyes on you, but that’s to be expected from a student of your caliber to be attending the university there with the dean’s attention on you,” the mayor praised her as he stood in front of the window, watching the bustling town center. “Oh it was many generations ago that the druids helped some farmers form the little village. Back then there was only a farmer’s market and town hall if you can believe it. We thrived due to trade, and the mill a ways up the road. That I suppose you might have visited, since you came in on their cart.”

Seeing her expression, he let out a laugh. “Oh don’t worry so much youngin’. It’s the way of the small town to know everything going on within minutes of it happening. Why I remember back in my day we knew that the old mayor was having a row with his wife before even he did! Real scrapper that woman, and their fights were the stuff of tales. Never could look at a cast iron pan the same again after their last one.”

“Was there a reason for their fights or…” she probed, curious about the nature of the fights..

The mayor let out a chuckle as he shook his head. “Oh, the usual, he was sleeping with her lover behind her back, and they hadn’t worked out the laws on multiple partners back then. There’s parts of the story that followed the fights I dare say would be topics of some books you’ve never read in the library.”

Not that she was going to correct him, but there was most certainly a very robust section of the library that she may or may not have had a browsing through between semesters.

“So, the druids?”

“Ah yes! The druids, wonderful folk. If you’re going to Castledale from here, you will pass one of their groves,” the mayor explained before tapping his chin in thought. “Yes… hmm…”

Turning back to the shelves, he began going through a drawer on the side, pulling out packages and looking them over before setting them back inside. “Perhaps you might do me a favor, young lady. It will only be an hour out of your way, and if you leave first thing in the morning, you’d be able to stay the night in the grove.”

Pulling out a rolled up piece of parchment, he peered through one end, reading the words before putting it back. “Forgive me, it has been a while, but we have some things to send to them, and have not had a chance to do so with the recent weather and loss of magic.”

“You said that it would be on our way?” she prompted watching him pull out a small tube and read the label on the side before putting it carefully back into the drawer.

“Yes, yes, quite right, a lovely grove, I took a trip there once myself, met my husband there if you would believe it. Ah!” he cheered, pulling out a scroll case with Celestial Grove on a tag on one end. “Here we are. My father-in-law is the head of the druidic order. Could you please take this to him. I’ll arrange for you and your bard friend to have a room at the inn tonight, and the finest meal on me.”

“Thank you sir, I’m honored to help you,” she offered, taking the scroll case from him. “Might you give us directions?”

“Certainly, certainly. It’s just up the main road out of town towards Castledale,” he began pointing in the direction they were heading. “There will be two trails to the right, and then one to the left marked with a flat stone shaped like a tree. Take that path and stay on it. The druids will find you long before you get to the grove and guide you the rest of the way.”

“Understood, thank you for the room and meal.”

“Of course! You are doing this town a great service,” he offered with a laugh before going into another story about the old days, never finishing his first one about the druids.

U.A. High School Field Trip Around Japan: Day 3 Translations

This is Day 3 of Shonen Jump’s special commemoration of My Hero Academia reaching one hundred million copies worldwide, which is being rolled out daily across one-week in each prefecture’s newspaper.

The schedule:

April 4th, Day 1: Hokkaidō & Tōhōku regions

April 5th, Day 2: Kantō region

April 6th, Day 3: Chūbu region

April 7th, Day 4: Kansai region

April 8th, Day 5: Chūgoku & Shikoku regions

April 9th, Day 6: Kyūshū & Okinawa regions

April 10th, Day 7: Nationwide release

You can see the illustrations on their website here, where they are released digitally the day after the newspaper release.

Note: As I mentioned, the illustrations are available on the official site, but they are all rather small, which makes them hard to read, so in this post I have included photographs from fans which I used for my translations. Ashido: "Cuteness is justice!" Todoroki: "Cuteness is justice? Then this Kannon is a good omen for heroes." Asui: "'Cuteness' is profound, too."

Class 1-A is visiting Sado Island's Chokokuji Temple, where a 20-foot tall rabbit statue has been erected to show appreciation for the temple's domestic rabbits tended by the priests, who roam the grounds freely. Just behind Todoroki actually stands a second, much smaller rabbit statue. The goddess of mercy, Kannon, is carved into the rabbits' chests.

Toyama

Tokoyami: "The torrential flow of power liberated from prohibition... Those of us who have freed a once-sealed power feel the same, don't we, Todoroki?" Todoroki: "No, not particularly."

They are visiting Kurobe Dam, the tallest dam in Japan at 186 meters (610 feet).

Iida: "There are approximately 180 shops in here!!" Kacchan: "Tell me which one's got the tastiest stuff." Izuku: "That's gotta be all of them!" Kirishima: "Daaamn, there's no way you can go to all of them in one day." All Might: "Looks like those boys are having fun, doesn't it?"

This is Omicho Market in Kanazawa, the capital of Ishikawa, a very busy market with fresh seafood, vegetables, fruit, and local specialties!

Fukui

Izuku: "Sauce katsudon originates in Fukui prefecture! ︎ The deep flavor comes from the sour sauce seeping into the cutlet! You could say the sauce is saving the cutlet, and the cutlet is saving the sauce. It's a food that embodies the concept of being able to save to win and win to save. I don't think it's an exaggeration to call it the soul food of heroes. Ahhh! I can't stop thinking that I want everyone in Japan to know more about this..." Uraraka: "He's saying it's tasty."

One of Fukui's specialties is "sauce katsudon" wherein the pork cutlet is battered, coated in crumbs, deep fried, and then coated in a thick, sweet, tangy, savory sauce. "Katsu" means cutlet but it is phonetically identical to the word for win--the same one that's in Katsuki's name. Izuku is such a nerd, dear god. Special thanks to @pikahlua for saving my skin with Izuku's dreaded mumble-speech!

Yamanashi

Mirio: "There's... A RIPE PEACH! There's... RIPE GRAPES!" Kaminari: "The Yamanashi Prefecture Tourism Ambassador Hero...!" Sero: "Have we got a chance!?" Kirishima: "Sempai, you went out of your way just for this!?"

Yamanashi is one of Japan's big fruit providers with many orchards and vineyards, specializing in grapes, plums, and peaches. Mount Fuji is visible in the background! But Mirio... what were the ripe grapes!?

Nagano

Hagakure: "Ojiro-kun! You really can't see it!?" Jirou: "I can see it!" Ojiro: "It's 'cause I've got a tail, isn't it. I wonder if they're feeling territorial..."

They are at Jigokudani Monkey Park with Japanese macaque (snow monkeys), who love to hang out in hot springs in the winter.

Gifu

Iida: "Everyone!! Assemble here for a group photo!!" Uraraka: "Let's all do the gasshō pose, okay!!" Sero: "That's great!!"

The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama are part of a World Heritage Site protecting the traditional gasshō-zukuri houses unique to the area. The style is named for the arch of the roof looking like hands in prayer; the area gets substantial snowfall every year, and the shape of the roof and structure of the walls are optimal for protecting the integrity of the house. I got to see and step inside this style of home at the Japan Open-Air Folk Museum, and they are absolutely incredible. The informational placards said that in years when the snow piles high enough, the second story windows are used as entrances!

Shizuoka

Yaoyorozu: "The reason Mount Fuji looks blue is because its size is so great that one must view it at a distance. This distance puts a thick layer of air in-between, scattering the light and causing the mountain's surface to appear blue. The sky is blue for the same reason." Ashido: "Yaomomo's like a walking encyclopedia!" Aoyama: "A beautiful blue mountain, you say? Why, there's one right here~!"

Viewing Mount Fuji from Shizuoka's famous tea fields. Shizuoka provides 40% of Japan's green tea! I've had a few varieties unique to their area, they were very flavorful and soothing. Aoyama is bein' vain because his surname means "blue mountain."

Aichi

Satou: "All right, all right, now this is what I've been waiting for!" Yaoyorozu: "It's delicious!" Todoroki (thinking): "Half-Sweet Half-Salt..."

They are eating Ogura toast, a dish originating in a Nagoya cafe in 1921. Ogura jam is a sweet spread made out of adzuki beans, and it is often served with butter -- the butter being salted is the source of Todoroki's stroke of genius. I've had it several times, it's tasty!!

The State of Things Present

I kept trying to make this post fancier and better and more engaging, and then I realized I was doing that thing where I make myself too overwhelmed to actually finish and post it. The other thing was I kept gunning for a once-a-week posting, and uh… yeah that's not sustainable. So here we go!

Ok so the spacefarer (me??) was very tired, but he's awake now and doing things!

Life status

We moved! My wife and kids and I packed up and headed some miles south of our previous house. It was a risk for sure. We didn't know how things would pan out. We really needed to get away from our old environment, our old town, our old house. We loved that house, and we'd said so to each other many times even as we were halfheartedly searching for a new one. But at some point that house had become too burdened with bad memories and traumas, not to mention that after the pandemic, we had no more real roots there. Everyone had moved away, the communities we were involved with had disbanded or changed. And anyway, my wife would be starting a new teaching job down south.

We were fortunate enough to find a new house we loved, and fortunate enough to be in a position where we could actually make the move. I'm aware this is a privilege, given the economy and the market, and so I can only express my thankfulness and consider it a blessing, especially as we healed through our grief.

I have an improved office now! This is where I work on my day job (software/web dev) and my unday job (Studio Spacefarer). With my genetics stacked against me, but also with my desire to be able to keep up with my kids and be there for my family, I collected a standing desk, a walking pad treadmill thing, and an ergonomic keyboard. I'm walking or at least standing most of the day now, which has made a surprising difference already.

I was gonna post a wider view of the office, but my 3yo son ran up while I was taking pictures and started "working" (mashing the keypad), so this is automatically the better pic. Them's the rules.

Anyway, in short, we made it, and it hasn't been a smooth ride the entire time, but it has been well worth it. I've been able to get back into gamedev, which has been a huge boon to my mental health too.

Game status!

The good stuff. Here's where I'm at presently with Episode III!

The game is completable from start to end (definitely NOT feature complete)

Jumping, swimming, and dashing all work like a charm and are super fun

Three enemy types have been added, including custom A* pathfinding for the sea monster

Two new collection mechanics (one is heart containers, the other will be a small surprise)

Depth sorting and fake-3D, as mentioned previously, which lets me do lots of fun effects

Day/night are now on a new system, and cave darkness is now a thing (I tried to implement this in PD2 but couldn't figure it out)

Palette swapping for night and lighting effects now uses GameMaker's built in layer effects

Much of the game is now decorated

Updated the game's palette to be more pleasing

Better borderless windowed mode, frame toggling, etc. (I'd made a post about a third party plugin I used to do this previously, but not long after that, GameMaker added an official setting to be toggleable at runtime, so I switched to that… much easier lol)

New audio library which has been a MASSIVE boon (Juju's Vinyl)

New flexible debug/inspector mode which allows me to change values on the fly more easily

State machine rewrite using structs instead of data structures--extremely flexible and less error-prone (in fact the data structures here were the #1 cause of crashes in Episodes I and II)

Save system rewrite, also using structs instead of data structures (thus fixing the #2 cause of crashes in the first two episodes)

Adjusted the way walls get displayed in interiors--will make a post on this later

Lots and lots and lots and lots of bug fixes

I'm not exactly sure how to wrap this up lol, but y'all can be encouraging me, if you have the emotional space to do so! There's still a lot left to do on PD3, and it can be very daunting at times.

Next post up will be looking forward to the future of Studio Spacefarer. I'm very excited about this! Keep an eye out!

Your girl (“giving man vibes” girl) is officially taken off the market ehehe

I know I posted something about that earlier this week but I deleted it because I realised I could be reading into things wrong, and decided to ask him if we’re like… Ya know. Boyfriend/girlfriend. Asked him about the reel he sent me, if that meant I was his girlfriend or if I’m reading into things wrong and if I’m getting ahead of myself, and he took a moment to think and then was like, “Well, do you want to be boyfriend/girlfriend? Because with the way things have been going, I would think…” and kinda just trailed off SOOOOO, I have a feeling he was once again, one step ahead of me because in my head I was still in doubt if we were official or not even after he sent that meme, while he probably was already there at least a while ago 💀

And I agreed with him, because that’s kinda what I was thinking too; considering everything that’s happened… Yeah. It’s only natural, and like… I don’t want anybody else but him ANYWAY SO LIKE-

So we were making it official and making sure we were both ready… AND THEN MY CONCERNED AND PEOPLE PLEASING ASS decides to makes sure he really is ready and was like, “But if you’re not ready that’s fine” because I didn’t want to make it seem like I was forcing labels or anything, and he was like, “No, it’s fine, I’m ready. Are you?” and I was like “Yeah, I’m all in if you are.”

Annnnd that was that!

So I’ve got a boyfriend.

(Thank you to those who were SO worried about the fact that MY relationship wasn’t progressing the way they expect a relationship to progress. You don’t gotta worry any more 🥰🥰🥰🥰)

Also, he wanted to invite me to some Christmas party (and I’m like IS THAT HIM WANTING TO INTRODUCE ME TO HIS FRIENDS WNSKS) on the 22nd/23rd of December but I’m gonna be going overseas by then 🥲🥲🥲 SO I WAS LIKE DAMN IT SMDKKS

And he’s already planning on seeing me once I get back so we can go to the zoo for our next date ahaha 🤣

(Maybe these should have been signs he saw me as his girlfriend, but I like clarity on things so I don’t end up embarrassing myself.)

I was telling my friends about this whole thing and one of them was like “It was kinda obvious y’all were way past that point with the way you talked about the things that happened between you both” and I was like “am I that oblivious??” and they were like “yeah you are” 🥲🥲

I’d like to think of myself as… Strategically Dense rather than oblivious bc the moment he sent me that meme, I was about 70% sure he thought of us as girlfriend/boyfriend already by that point, because surely he wouldn’t have sent a reel like that with that kind of caption if he didn’t already think that?? Because he never sent reels with a caption like that before. But I wanted to make sure because there was a part of me that was unsure.

I guess that 70% of me was right all along AHAH.

Puppy Love Chapter 5

I am just as surprised as you are that I actually finished Chapter 5 and that I’m posting it. Hopefully this motivation continues.

“I think this is the last of it,” Tim said as he put the box he was carrying down in Charlotte’s apartment. “Your house is officially cleaned out.”

It was a month after the preliminary hearing. Jeff voluntarily moved out of Charlotte’s house. Charlotte moved what she could into her apartment and put the rest in storage.

“Thank you for all of your help, Tim. You didn’t need to spend your day off moving boxes.” Charlotte smiled.

“I haven’t been able to check in with you since I got pulled into doing some undercover work so I wanted to make sure you were okay. I know the prelim took a lot out of you.” Tim responded.

“It did but I haven’t heard from Jeff since that day. My house is on the market and I can finally start trying to move forward.” Charlotte plopped down on the couch.

“What are you going to do first after you sell your house?” Tim asked, sitting down on the opposite side of the couch from her.

Charlotte let out a long sigh. “I have no idea.”

“You’re not going to look for a new place to live?” Tim couldn’t hide his disappointment.

“What’s wrong with where I live now?” Charlotte half-teased.

“Well, I guess…nothing if you like living with leaking plumbing and in the most unsafe building in California.” Tim rolled his eyes.

“This building is sa–” Charlotte started.

“If you say ‘safe’ I’m going to throw up.” Tim laughed.

“Sanitary?” Charlotte giggled.

“Please.” Tim shot her a look.

“Okay, okay.” Charlotte conceded. “It’s not the greatest.”

“I’d like to see you in a nice neighborhood, in a building with actual security guards.” Tim looked at his feet, afraid that if he looked at her, his eyes would give away his feelings for her.

“I could move into Fort Knox and still not feel completely safe.” Charlotte admitted.

“I really want to tell you that it’ll pass and that you will feel safe again but I don’t want to lie to you. I can’t tell you that you’ll ever feel completely safe again. You’ve been through a horribly traumatic event. It’s going to take time.” Tim laid his hand on her shoulder, locking his eyes on hers. “But I can promise you that any time you don’t feel safe, any time you’re scared, you call me and I will be there.”

“Thank you,” Charlotte smiled. “It means a lot to have somebody in my corner.”

“You have Jonah, Nathan, and Lucy as well.” Tim reminded her.

“I know and I appreciate them more than I can actually put into words. But, they coddle me. Which, sometimes I need. When I need somebody to metaphorically slap me in the back of the head and tell me to buck up, you’re the one I call.” Charlotte replied. “It’s refreshing.”

“I’m not sure how to take that.” Tim chuckled.

“It’s a good thing, I promise.” Charlotte assured him. Tim’s hand was still on her shoulder. Charlotte thought about saying something but she didn’t want him to break contact with her.

“I come bearing Mexican food!” Jonah chirped as he came through the door.

“Thank God! I’m starving.” Tim sighed.

It was 2 am when the sound of breaking glass woke Charlotte with a start.

“Charlie,” Jonah’s panicked voice yelled. Charlotte got up and ran to the living room where Jonah was scrambling to get the fire extinguisher working as the curtains started to catch on fire.

“What happened?” Charlotte asked.

“Somebody threw something through the window.” Jonah huffed out finally getting the fire extinguisher to work.

Charlotte pulled out her phone and called 911. The dispatcher advised Charlotte to alert her neighbors and to leave her apartment.

After Charlotte relayed that information to Jonah, he grabbed her hand and pulled her from the building, setting off the fire alarm on his way out.

“You need to call Tim.” Jonah said once they were out on the street.

Charlotte nodded, worrying her thumbnail between her teeth. Her finger hovered over Tim’s name in her contact list before Jonah tapped the call icon. He rolled his eyes at her. “It’s ringing,” he snarked.

“Charlotte? Is everything okay?” Tim asked, his voice full of worry and sleep.

“There was a fire in my apartment building.” Charlotte said.

“Are you okay?” Tim was fully awake now.

“Yeah, we’re fine. We’re just standing outside waiting for the fire trucks to get here.” She explained before Jonah grabbed the phone from her.

“So, no, we’re not fine. We were asleep and Jeff tried to fire bomb us.” Jonah’s voice was shaking.

“Jonah-” Charlotte started before he cut her off by holding his index finger up to her.

“No, Charlotte! Don’t play this off.” He glared at her before turning his attention back to Tim. “Tim, I was woken up by the living room window shattering. When I got out there, there was a clear bottle with liquid in it and a rag that had been set on fire coming from it. It caught the curtains on fire. We’re just fucking lucky that the bottle didn’t break.”

“I’m on my way.” Tim said before hanging up.

Jonah handed Charlotte back her phone and huffed a breath out of his nose at her.

“What?” Charlotte demanded.

“Why are you trying to play this off like it’s no big deal?” Jonah asked.

“We don’t know if it was Jeff.” Charlotte answered.

“The fuck we don’t. Who else is going to try to fire bomb us?”

“I don’t know, okay?” Charlotte practically screamed in his face. “But I don’t want to accept that we were almost killed tonight! I need some time to process this.”

“Process faster!” Jonah yelled at her. He turned and walked away.

“Where are you going?” Charlotte called after him.

“To cool off,” he wheeled around to face her, “because I get that you need time but this actually happened Charlotte! And I am scared!”

“I am, too,” she whispered to his back.

Twenty minutes later, Tim’s truck screeched to a stop behind one of the fire trucks on scene. He flashed his badge and made his way to one of the firefighters.

“What do we have?” Tim asked.

“Fire started on the first floor, apartment A7. Tenant tried to extinguish the fire before we got here but these old buildings, man. We’re lucky we got here when we did and that everybody was out of the building. There’s significant damage.” The firefighter replied.

“Shouldn’t the sprinklers have knocked it down some?” Tim wanted answers then he wanted to hug Charlotte.

The firefighter rolled his eyes. “They’re dummy sprinklers. Put in just to pass inspection. They don’t work.”

“How does that even pass inspection?” Tim was livid.

“Grease the right palms and it’s not hard.” The firefighter shook his head. “We did find what looks to be an intact Molotov cocktail in A7. Fire investigators will be in later to gather evidence.”

“Thanks.” Tim said and walked away, looking for Charlotte. He found her standing off to the side of the rest of the tenants huddled on the sidewalk. “Hey,” he said, putting his hands on her arms. He looked at her and tears formed in her eyes. He pulled her against his chest and wrapped his arms around her tightly.

“This is my fault.” Charlotte whispered.

“No, it’s not.” Tim said. “It’s whoever threw that thing through your window’s fault. And I will find out who it was.”

“Tim, we both know who it was.” Charlotte said, breaking the hug and wiping the tears from her cheeks.

Tim nodded solemnly. “Yeah, we do. And I’m going to put that bastard back behind bars for as many counts of attempted murder and arson as I can get the DA to charge.”

“He’s not going to stop.” Charlotte shook her head. “He’s going to keep coming.”

“And I will be there every time he shows up.” Tim vowed. “He will not hurt you again.” He brushed her tears away with his thumbs. “Where’s Jonah? Let’s get you two back to my place for the night.”

Charlotte sniffled and gestured vaguely down the block. “He’s down there somewhere. We got into a fight.”

“Okay,” Tim placed a kiss on her forehead. “I’ll go get him. Stay here.”

Charlotte nodded. As she watched Tim walk away, she felt like he was the only one who could put an end to this nightmare.

“Jonah,” Tim called once he located Charlotte’s roommate in the crowd. “What are you doing over here?”

“I needed some time,” Jonah sighed. “Charlotte said we didn’t know it was Jeff and I was afraid I was going to lose it on her. She knows it was him and I don’t understand why she’s trying to downplay this.”

“She’s been through a lot,” Tim explained. “Sometimes it’s easier for victims to trick themselves into thinking that all this bad shit isn’t connected. It makes them feel safer.”

“Well, now I feel like a real asshole.” Jonah replied.

“Let’s get you and her out of here. You two can talk back at my place.”

Jonah nodded in agreement as he joined Tim to go get Charlotte.

“Charlotte,” Jonah called to her. She was standing with her back to him, her left hand pressed to her left ribs. “Let’s get out of here. It’s late and I’m cold.” She didn’t move.

“Charlotte,” Tim scowled at her lack of response. He walked faster and moved around her so he could face her.

“Tim,” Charlotte whispered, the color of her face extremely pale.

“What…” Tim put his hand on her shoulder in an effort to get her to tell him what was going on. Then he noticed the blood that was seeping out from her fingers that were pressed to her ribs. “I need a medic!” Tim yelled as he placed his hand over hers. He guided her to the ground, her back against his chest, his knees on either side of her, pressing his hand as hard as he could against her hand to try to stop the blood flow.

The Suresh Problem.

If you’re here from that reddit petition, please be aware that this post was used without my consent.

Okay, I've received yet another four or five asks in my inbox about Suresh, so I'm just going to discuss this properly, once. I'm going to put the majority of this under the cut, because it specifically addresses very triggering topics for a lot of people.

TL:DR; you're all getting played by Fusebox, and they wrote Suresh to be an asshole on purpose.

I really appreciate that y'all are sending me these asks. Particularly as so many of them have mentioned that they feel that my blog is a safe space for POC. I cannot express how much that means to me. Thank you. I'm doing my best.

After this post, I will not answer, acknowledge, or in any way interact with any asks that compare Suresh to Harvey Weinstein, Andrew Tate, or any of the other real-life sexual predators & abusers he's been compared to, even if it's to defend him. While I appreciate y'all bringing it to my attention, it's just exacerbating it, and I'm not giving it a platform after this post.

I am not an expert in talking about race, nor am I an expert in writing POC. I'm not a POC, nor have I ever claimed to be. I just don't believe in putting discussions like this in the too-hard basket, and pretending they doesn't exist because it's a hard conversation to have. My willingness to have these discussions is not 'bandwagoning', or at least, it's not intended to be. I don't have the world's largest platform, but I have a small soapbox and I'm going to use it properly.

I'm also going to put a disclaimer here and say that this is only an opinion, and an uninformed one at that. I don't work for Fusebox, I don't have a degree in marketing or digital engagement, but I have done some work in User Experience and my degree's partly in Cultural Anthropology, so I know a little bit about human behaviour and the way we engage with online media.

Again, not an expert. Just cynical and sick of the debate.

So here's the sitch.

They wrote Suresh to be a toxic, pushy asshole on purpose.

His behaviour, in some areas, is not great. The gaslighting, the manipulation, implying he used to trick her into sleeping with him. Many people, including myself, have been in emotionally abusive relationships with people who are like this. It's not nice. It's certainly not entertainment.

But you cannot sit there and tell me that this script did not go through multiple rounds of revisions. You think this wasn't brought up at Fusebox HQ? I can absolutely guarantee you that it was.

So why on earth would writers write him this way?

Because it gets you talking about the game.

Ever heard of the phrase 'Any publicity is good publicity'?

There are 1000+ LITG Fanfictions on Ao3. Guess which season has the fewest fanfics? Season 3. Often casually referred to as 'The Disney Season'. The only drama during that season was Ciaran/Tai/Yasmin picking MC, and/or Rafi/Lily flirting heavily with MC. Feel free to tell me I'm wrong, but overwhelmingly, it was a very sweet season with generally likeable and unique characters.

Season 2 had so, so many characters with different backstories, interests, motivations, etc. that it was hard to find someone who didn't like one of them at least a little. And people engaged so much with that content. Just based off the fanfiction numbers (because I don't have any official stats) at least 75% of the LITG FF content is for Season 2.

But here's the thing: It's far easier to make people angry than it is to make them fall in love.

What is the one thing almost everyone spent gems on during Bombshell? Telling off Juliet. It's basic engagement principle that people are going to be more engaged when they're emotionally invested in a piece of media. It's why clickbait exists. It's why internet trolls exist, for fuck's sake.

So why on earth would they bother spending the extra time in developing complex, multifaceted characters, when as a fandom, we've made it perfectly clear that we'll spend more money, more time, and more brain space into tearing apart characters we hate, rather than doing the same for characters we love?

Fusebox are a business. They do not care if the game offends you. What they do care about are those sweet, sweet advertising dollars. And if they can show a reddit sub with thousands upon thousands of eyes on it, all ranting and raving about Suresh, they can absolutely turn to an advertiser and say "Yo, look at our engagement levels!"

This is just capitalism. It's business. If they take it too far on a TV show, advertisers will start pulling out. But advertisers only pull out when there's an actual, honest-to-god backlash. And most of the advertising (in my LITG2 app at least) isn't for products or companies with a reputation. It's for other games. Meaning that, realistically, if you did want to complain to an advertiser about the game being racist, sexist, misogynistic who are you going to complain to? Apple? The fuck do they care? They haven't broken any laws?

It's specifically designed to be controversial and problematic. That is the entire point. If this kind of thing triggers you, DNI.

Fusebox do not care about individuals' experiences.

A few people will be so triggered or turned off by the content that they'll leave. But enough of us stayed, engaged, and participated in the game to make it worth their while. So Fusebox just continues to exist in this sweet space, where they just insert more and more problematic characters, leading to higher and higher engagement. As long as they don't cross any hard lines, they can do it forever.

The inherent problem with this, is that a lot of people don't know when to stop.

And this is when it starts getting really fucking sad.

Y'all are taking a guy that's specifically designed to piss you off, and deciding he's an abuser, gaslighter, manipulator, etc. There are already so many stereotypes about South Asian men being pushy, or demanding, or that they don't respect women.

I've seen so, so many instances in the reddit sub, on facebook, and even in the official Discord server of language that tars all South Asian men as being this way. People saying, and I fucking quote, "I wouldn't mind it so much if it was Eddie". (Thanks, Reddit).

Firstly, there's a good reason that it's not Eddie. And that's because, as demonstrated by the quote above, a lot of people would be far more willing to excuse this behaviour if it was coming from a pretty white boy.

So why is this?

Why do you think they made the manipulative, 'won't take no for an answer' man be from Southern Asia?

Why do you think they made Hope a sassy, determined black woman?

Why do you think they made Miki a quirky, shy, but nosy East Asian girl?

Even Lottie, who's a whiny little shit isn't from the UK.

This game is most popular in the UK. It's also popular elsewhere, but its main target audience is the UK. It's why most of the characters are from there, the script contains UK slang, etc.

It's so much easier to hate someone when they're not 'from here'.

Check out any American superhero movie. The villain is foreign. In Hollywood movies, they're British, French, Russian, Chinese, South American, Arabic, whatever. They're just foreign. Or different.

They're others.

Because it sells.

It's easier for you to team up with your mates on reddit and condemn Suresh for his behaviour than it is to do it to someone who looks like you.

But guess what?

There are people who play this game who are People of Colour.

(Shocking, I know. They enjoy playing games too!)

And whenever you buy into this bullshit that Fusebox is feeding you, whenever you pile on a character like Suresh, you are making them feel like they're not welcome here.

People of Colour are being used as a means to an end.

Instead of writing complex, multi-dimensional villains with real motivations, Fusebox are using basic clickbait to get you to engage.

And that's super fucking unfair.

I'm not telling you to do anything. I'm not telling you not to play. I'm not going to stop spending money on it. I'm certainly not going to stop.

I just want people to be aware of what they're doing.

Be aware of the fact that they're playing into your preconceived ideas of race, culture, and ethnicity.

Be aware of the fact that they are trying to you to engage at at all costs.

Be aware that your rabid fan-ness can actually spur others into a mob mentality.

Be aware of the fact that you're allowed to criticise characters. But criticise the writing. Criticise the business tactic.

Don't fall into the quicksand!

Don't let yourself make it about race. Stop letting others make it about race.

Stop engaging with it when it becomes about race.

Stop engaging when your friends compare him to Harvey Weinstein, Andrew Tate, Prince Andrew, etc. He's a character from a mobile game. They are real people who have hurt real women.

Show Fusebox you'll engage with the stuff you do like, as opposed to only engaging when it's piling on to a character.

Get rabid about the drama, not about the character.

And look, I'm writing this out in a long, one-shot rant, so I might've completely rambled, contradicted myself, or said something completely wrong, so please forgive me if I have.

I just hope this helped someone see it for what it is.

MARKETING.

So in conclusion:

Do: Make memes about Suresh not apologising.

Do: Hate him for cheating.

Do: Push him in the pool.

Do not: Compare him to a real life sex offender

Do not: Make it about race

Do not: Think for a second that Fusebox don't know exactly what they're doing.

Devlog #30 | 04.27.23

Hi everyone!

We are back with a monthly update! If you all remember, last month I was feeling a bit burnt out, and I'm super happy to say I'm feeling a lot more like myself this month <3 Thank you to everyone who sent me a lil message/comment, I always appreciate them sm. I won't bore you with my gushing, but I am forever grateful for you all! With that, I'll get into the updates ^^

But first, it was someone's birthday this month! happy bday, hoe.

Writing

I have some exciting news! Kayn's route has officially entered the line editing phase, which is the FINAL stage of editing \o/ This will be the first route completed for Alaris, wow!!! Fenir's route is still going through developmental editing, but the changes are already super cute and he is giving ultimate grumpy baby energy, which we love to see.

I'm still chipping away at Druk's route. Honestly, I'm Very Sad I haven't made as much progress with him as I would've liked, but a lot of my time was dedicated to the enhanced demo this month, and between revamping the demo script, coding, voice acting, and edits for Kayn/Fenir's full routes, I just didn't have the time. I'm hoping this month, I'll finally Actually be able to get his first draft done <3

Art

We officially finished all Demo Backgrounds this month (wow!!). Having started revamping the demo BGs all the way back in, like, November, it's crazy that this first milestone has been reached! Now, it's only full game BGs left. I received the new Dusk Court BG recently, and she's stunning, so I'm excited for the more "core plot" BGs to start coming out :')

In honor of the enhanced demo coming out, I updated the sprite art for the LIs! I'll be getting to the side characters this next month, but I'm really happy with the new art. The differences maybe kinda small for some of them, but I think they look a lot cleaner, and I think the auras especially are pretty <;3 we also whoreified kuna'a

The full GUI was also finished this month. I just have to code them in, but it looks SO delicate and pretty and sharp. I'm so thankful to Alice for doing the most outstanding job with them---she is so talented!!

Additional Notes

I complained about it 29348 times, but I Finished the Voice Acting Coding this month uwu. That is probably the biggest accomplishment considering how much work it was reviewing all the lines, cutting them, and coding them into the game. I'm terrified for the full routes.

I selected the playtesters for the game so far. Thank you to everyone who applied! I wasn't able to reach out to everyone who applied, and I didn't want to have so so many playtesters, since filtering through everyone's feedback would be overwhelming. But there may come a time when I need more playtesters in the future, so please feel free to keep my little game in mind <3

It's been a bit since I mentioned my Patreon, mostly because I feel bad asking people for money and promoting a platform where people have to pay for content LOL. But it is there, and I do post to it! Not a dumb question at all! ^_^ The reason that you can't find it is because it doesn't exist. XD In fact, I still haven't read the book yet, and I don't know when/if I will. I'm thinking that this is a good thing, as apparently even among the most diehard Drizzt fans there have been some very negative reactions to Lolth's Warrior, more so than ever.

If you follow me, you've probably noticed a significant drop in my activity. I've been greatly enjoying investing my time in other things, which is something I've been wanting to do for a while now but my brain wouldn't stop being hung up over these characters. It's no secret that I've been tired of Salvatore's BS for a long time, but I was too invested in the characters to be able to move on.

I think what finally helped me flip the switch is WotC investing a shitload of money to make Drizzt products, especially with whitewashed Artemis even though it's 2023. With the context of them also giving the excuse that they couldn't pay the other creatives who worked on their setting at market standard rates in the past along with their actions with the OGL earlier in the year, well, suffice to say that while I haven't respected Salvatore for a long time I did respect WotC, however after everything that happened this year, that has changed. I'm not sure how much WotC execs are responsible for the recent mass lay-offs, which in itself is really bad, but the fact that Mike Mearls was finally let go doesn't really help WotC's case for me because it only serves as a reminder of how Mearls wasn't fired earlier for assisting his sex abuser friend (he was instead quietly shuffled to the video games division for a while). When Mearls returned to the D&D division, about half a dozen female D&D staffers quit at the same time. This says to me that WotC cares more about a male sex abuser supporter than they do about all those female members of their staff, and it makes me question whether they care about women and oppressed groups in general. I've really started to question how much hypocrisy is present in their making a huge show of being LGBT+ inclusive; recent D&D products do indeed include a lot of LGBT+ representation, but how much of that is due to Jeremy Crawford having to fight to get it in there each time? How could WotC continue to march in Pride parades with pomp and circumstance while allowing the Mearls incident to have transpired?

When the OGL snafu happened, a friend made the comment that WotC may have had its ups and downs in the past but overall was generally viewed in a positive light by many, but that the OGL fiasco has probably bankrupted them from a "good will" perspective for a while. This is basically where I'm at with the company now. I still care a great deal about Ed Greenwood and the authors who penned the works that led me to fall in love with the world so hard, and while I still play D&D and care about FR, I'm at a point where I feel like WotC has demonstrated a clear lack of regard for their own Drizzt franchise, so much so that they don't even bother to get basic facts about one of its primary characters correct. As such, what's the point in me continuing to care? While I also don't care about how WotC feels about me as an individual fan, I've long been distasteful of how dismissive they are of their most dedicated fans, the ones who have spent hundreds of thousands of unpaid hours curating the (in)consistencies of their universe that they themselves can't be bothered to maintain. I can understand the reasons for WotC actively instructing their creatives to not use the FR Wiki, but it's painfully obvious that those creatives including Salvatore still use it to keep their facts straight because there is no comparable official resource for them internally with the company itself. Furthermore, the stuff that WotC is continuing to do suggest that they have no intention to change that, quite the opposite in fact. It was quite eyebrow-raising when WotC compared their D&D franchise to the Marvel universe, because what makes the Marvel universe so compelling and successful is the very self-consistency that WotC is trying to do away with in D&D. A big part of the reason why Marvel movies are loved is because it's the same characters that recur, and you never know if a character from a different movie will show up in the movie you're currently watching, but it's always a delight when they do. And, of course, it's so epic when all of those storylines across many different movies all come together and culminate in truly astounding ways. Despite the usage of an infinite multiverse in Marvel, there's this big sense of consistency, which is what makes the franchise so impressive and compelling. Marvel's world is everything that D&D's is not, at least in D&D's current iteration. Even though many different stories across a shared world is part of the draw of FR for me, I don't need D&D to be like Marvel, however because WotC made that comparison of the current D&D world to the Marvel world, I can't help but feel like WotC is more talk than action. I'm not at all saying that D&D isn't a quality product, it's just for me the shine of WotC is no longer there.

I think the biggest indicator for me that I was ready to shift my focus was my lukewarm reception of Baldur's Gate 3. It is everything that I hoped for and more for a current generation Forgotten Realms/D&D video game, and yet I was just ok about it. Here is FINALLY something that I spent so many years dreaming about, getting more and more hungry for it following the flops of Sword Coast Legends and the Dark Alliance reboot, but when it finally happened, I was just ok about it. It's a fantastic game and 110% deserving of its awards and its huge fan acclamation, and yet I was just ok about it. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed the game, but I can't see myself playing it again.

I'm still happy to help and support the people in this fandom, be it by answering lore questions, suggesting novels to read, pointing the way to resources, or with more serious matters. I don't know how much new content I'll make though, I've got a bunch of WIPs in terms of art and writing, as well as miscellaneous drafts containing information about the world, but I don't know if I'll ever feel like finishing them/polishing them up to post. It's very freeing to no longer feel compelled to read each new Drizzt book because the drop in quality with each new installment has really been immense, and I'm a lot happier not spending those hours consuming really badly-written media. I do feel bad for no longer providing for those who want to know what's happening in the newer books but don't feel like reading them and who want to know a non-sycophantic summary of them, but hey, maybe someone will step up and fill in the summaries for the books. I'm not really sure why none of the diehard Drizzt/Salvatore super fans have undertaken the task since Hero. Wikis are editable by anyone, but the Wiki staff do try to make sure that everything is objective and factual.

@meowmeowriley asked to hear more about 4, 6, and 7 from my COD wip list (thank you very much btw) and my motto will always be 'ask and ye shall receive' so here we go!

4 Still Unnamed centaur AU: Alright so Price is the very proud owner of a centaur wildlife reserve which is a place that takes injured centaurs and fixes them up so they can be released again. Ghost, Soap, Gaz, Roach, König, and my OC Flower (pls ask me about him), are all centaurs who cannot be released into the wild due to various reasons and they act as like ambassadors, they even organise events to help raise centaur awareness (everyone especially adores the kids that come with school visits) but Shepard, who is a very high official in the wildlife reserve business, only sees centaurs as beasts and not like the intelligent beings they are. He tries to put Price out of business at every opportunity and is generally an all around dick. Yet nothing seems to work as support for centaur communities continues to blow up due to the team being adorable and in love together, i mean look at Ghost blushing as Soap tries to court him! It's adorable!

6 The Men In The Corner Booth: It's basically an outside view on the lads from the perspective of a gay bar and it's patrons. I love outsider POVs so i decided to make my own. It's mostly about the lads being disgustingly in love with each other while also being absolutely insane. Also features another of my OCs i call Timber. I don't have much yet but i still love it.

7 Wild Wild West: A RDR2 and COD crossover, i also love this one. The lads are a bounty hunter gang who mainly deal with the worst of the worst and are on the search for Graves who betrayed them, they find out Graves is working with these dudes called the Pinkertons and accidentally stumble upon the Van Der Linde Gang getting shot at and decide to intervene. They team up and join the camp as they search for Graves, in the meantime they show the Van Der Linde gang that things could be better mainly by just doing their own thing as they normally do. (AKA everyone does the chores and brings in money instead of relying on one dude to do it, i am a firm believer in letting Arthur rest. That poor man needs it) Ghost and Arthur bond, Hosea and Price bond over being dads, Price sets Dutch straight, they drive Micah crazy. Very fun. Also stars Flower because i love my boy.

Nobody asked for it, but i need to rant about my Star Wars COD crossover too, it's very self indulgent and full of my own headcanons so be warned. It's about Ghost and Soap being Mandalorian bounty hunters who just got married a week ago and still very deep in that honeymoon phase. They make a stop on Coruscant because they're out of the tea Ghost drinks and Ghost without his tea is a nightmare so they go get it even though Coruscant is a sensory nightmare (They are both force sensitive because the Force is very cool and force sensitive Mando's exist damnit) they find his tea, but also find a wee little baby Obi-Wan, freshly traumatized from Bandomeer, hiding in a alley because Obi had a panic attack while searching for his master at the markets. Ghost and Soap's Mandalorian instincts activate, Soap sees Obi is Stewjoni like him and gets even more protective. And well the marriage is really new but it's never too early to adopt right?

Baby Obi gets fed copious amounts of tea and cookies and gets adopted, but requests to get brought back to the Jedi temple because he does really want to be a Jedi and finish his education, Ghost is a bit pouty but they drop him off by the temple with a care package and a few dozen comm numbers to call if he ever gets in trouble or just wants to call his new family. And because Obi-Wan is the greatest danger magnet to have ever lived he will get in a lot of trouble lol.

THE WORLD BASEBALL CLASSIC OR HOW A SINGLE AT BAT PERMANENTLY ALTERED MY BRAIN CHEMISTRY AND MADE ME FALL DEEPLY IN LOVE WITH BASEBALL

Well, two at-bats, actually, but let's not talk about that one and instead talk about the storied matchup, the one now written in immortality and will be talked about for years to come.

Baseball is considered a slow-burner sport by many, even more so before the official introduction of the pitch clock, 'boring' even on the surface especially compared to sports with constant high-octane action like hockey or basketball. But as with sports in general, among the things that makes the game so exciting (or devastating) is the buildup to the matchup—the storylines and the narratives, as well as the ebb and flow of the clash itself with how the game is structured—it's not over until it's over, a comeback to tie the game and a walkoff win is always possible.

The final of the 2023 World Baseball Classic is one of the prime example of all the stars aligning to make a historic matchup between the best of the best.

Mike Trout is a three-time MVP in the MLB, and is considered as one of the best baseball players of all time. Ohtani Shohei is nicknamed 'The Unicorn' by fans and experts alike, being the first elite two-way player (a player who pitches and bats) and is regarded as the most talented baseball player of all time. They are both in their primes and are currently considered to be two of the best players in the MLB. The term 'generational talent' tends to be thrown around casually in sports—for Trout and Ohtani, it's more than a worthy title.

Ohtani and Trout both play for the Los Angeles Angels in the MLB, with Trout being one of the reasons why Ohtani chose to play for the Angels in the first place. They've been good friends since Ohtani signed with the Angels leading up to the 2018 season. Unfortunately the Angels haven't found success despite both players being extremely successful, breaking long-standing records left right and center. Many consider it to be a shame that Trout and Ohtani were 'wasting' the prime years of their careers not playing 'meaningful' games since the Angels have not made it to the playoffs since their last appearance in 2014.

So we have two of the best players in the game, who happen to be teammates and good friends, playing in the final of baseball's equivalent of the FIFA World Cup on opposite sides representing their respective countries. Added to that is of course the novelty of an elite and truly one of a kind two-way player in Ohtani, pitching to one of the best hitters of all time in Trout.

The matchup was pretty unlikely in the first place too because of how batting orders work, and yet everything aligned for them to be up against each other in the top of the 9th—final barring extra innings—with two outs.

Japan were leading 3–2: strike Trout out, and Ohtani would win it all for Japan.

The whole tournament was such a treat all throughout, with exciting pool games, upsets, and rallying comebacks in the knockout stage. Two standout games for me are the quarterfinals matchup between Venezuela and the USA and the semifinals clash between Mexico and Japan. Both games were rife with gutsy baserunning and hitting, back-and-forth offense and lead change, and topped off by clutch plays to lead the respective teams to victory.

As much as we can weave romantics about America's pastime, it's also inseparable from how the US projected itself abroad in its foreign and military policy. My dearest @outofbodyinjury's research project led me to look into the history of the sport and its role in USA's long history of war and foreign intervention.

Starting from the 19th and 20th century as the game was growing and all throughout the 21st century, for example in response to 9/11 and the Iraq and Afghanistan invasions, baseball has been omnipresent as a tool to promote and serve US interests. The book The Empire Strikes Out: How Baseball Sold U.S. Foreign Policy and Promoted the American Way Abroad by Robert Elias dives deep into this topic. I have yet to find a DRM-free .epub of the book, but I will try to rip it if there's interest. Here's an .m4b rip of the audiobook, and here's a condensed version of the book: an article by the same author published in The International Journal of the History of Sport.

it's almost a shame you picked N and not M - KLM is the royal Dutch airline lol K: Do you have a guilty pleasures in fic (reading or writing)? I'm not sure about guilty pleasures but I NEED a happy ending. I can deal with drama and angst and heartbreak as long as everything is all sunshine and rainbows at the end. And I LIVE for meddling parents/siblings/friends and outsider/third person POV fics. L: Which of your fanfics was the most emotionally challenging to write? PS I love you. I usually avoid/ignore Gwyn's death (and I will be doing the same with Gabriel, thank you very much) but this worked really well with the prompt "Letter". I just cannot deal with Major Character Death fics in general, but dead parents/grief heavy fics are a big no for me. I'm happy with how it turned out but I probably won't be writing anything like that again! N: Any fic ideas brewing that you’d care to share? Oh man - so many! I'm hoping to finish my pride fic soon, there is my TK and Marjan exploring Austin fic that was inspired by TK's diamond earring and also these (mostly just ~vibes~ for now) - K9 handler/reluctant social media star Carlos - wrong person/right time blind date - photographer!TK going all Humans of New York Austin and getting Carlos in front of his lens (inspired by this screencap from the pilot I saw ages ago that had cameras on the shelves in TK's apartment) - Owen's bff/TK's godfather from New York visiting (outsider POV) - Owen and TK getting interviewed for local news as the new father and son duo working to reopen firehouse 126, and Carlos being there too to update the public on a missing person's case - a kind of missing moments thing of TK "officially" meeting Gabriel and Andrea. The show went from the farmer's market to dinner party at casa tarlos and that always felt a bit rushed. - Carlos and Gwyn bonding while TK recovers after being shot. In Bad Call, when Carlos shows up at Owen's house looking for TK, he still calls Owen Captain Strand but calls Gwyn by her first name, so in my mind he's closer to her/knows her better/is less intimidated by her. I have this image in my head of them having long conversations late at night when TK is asleep on Carlos' bicep and he can't/won't move because TK needs rest, and she isn't quite as scary when the only light source is the tv.

And my RWRB different first meeting fic that I shared a little snippet of earlier (and was supposed to be posted 4 months ago - never let me run a challenge again, me and deadlines is a bad combo)
