Highly recommend Ballerina on Netflix which came out very recently. I mean, what can I say? I saw that there is a new korean film with a female lead and a revenge plot, so of course I had to watch it?!

Just one thing before I start to praise the film: In case you want to watch it, please be aware of trigger warnings, especially regarding violence and sexual violence.

Okay, so:

I don’t know how this is even possible, but close to every single shot is absolutely beautiful and thought through and aesthetic. Sometimes, in combination with the music, it almost felt like a music video or the intro/outro of one (also sometimes it kinda felt like a car commercial ngl … but … but in a good way!). The use of the camera, how often they use angles to convey that something is not quite right or how often they use close ups of faces, expressions, hands etc., the lighting and coloring of literally everything, the sound design, be it the slashing of a knife or when someone crashes into a wall and you can almost feel it - it’s absolutely beautiful. It is visible that there was put a lot of creativity and love and fun into every scene and at times it manages to convey a lot without having the protagonist speak at all.

Regarding the story I have to say that it is rather simple and personally, I would have loved for them to delve deeper into the relationship between Ok-ju and Min-hee, but at the same time I think that the performance of the lead actress made it possible to feel with Ok-ju very easily. Like her anger and sadness is shown very clearly and I kinda like how it doesn’t need much words for it. Especially her anger. It was peak female-led revenge plot movie, you know.

Oh and how could I forget the fighting scenes? Fast paced, dynamic, creative. Sometimes I just sat there with an open mouth, completely amazed and immersed in the scene, so yeah, they were pretty good too!

In total I would say while the story lacked a bit of depth, the film is still beautifully made and kinda feels like an exploration of female anger/rage? (I’m really trying not to give any spoilers here, because it’s good and you should watch it!). At the same time, the simplicity of the plot was actually good, because that way the film was able to kinda take its time? Anyway, very good film, go watch it!

Hey, sorry for the long wait but here's what I can find.. and it's a long one

Ngl I've always had the impression that the lore in the Neos' universe was somewhat dead...? This year? But from what I noticed, yes they used their assigned Neo Number on the timeline.

The Neos taking pictures in different places worldwide (somewhat) actually could strengthen the idea that they have entered the Reality and are expanding their universe. In 2020-2021, they were in the process of doing it and, this year is pretty much like the peak of their plan; hence called Golden Age. But what's unfortunate is that there aren't any bits that help that idea... which is why I am actually unsure of this theory. For example, in 2021 we had illustrations of their machines but now the concept pictures are just... normal. ESPECIALLY contents such as YearDream videos or NCTmentaries... it's all pretty vague. Album-wise, I think it's interesting that they are called Archiving and Collecting, it's like they are keeping memories or perhaps 'documentations' (in a scientific way) of their mission and what stage they are in. It's really odd that they call it Golden Age yet it's not that grand...

MV

MV and Archiving videos, each one of them has very different visuals and aesthetics. I think that there aren't any lore conclusions drawn from those because I see them mostly for stylistic purposes. There isn't a clear plot going on. One thing for sure Baggy Jeans was in the Dream world, many irregular stuff happening. The unit choice itself, the first NCT U unit, perhaps could mean a new beginning.

Though I do have a sliver of thoughts for Golden Age MV. The overall song sounds hopeful and 'inspiring' to an extent, all the Neos gathering. In the beginning, we have a droplet of water, Ether, so they are connecting. However, as a deranged theorist, I thought there were some slightly suspicious scenes and an underlying meaning behind all of it.

First of all, some members have their keys with their NeoNumber assigned (I saw a theory tweet from some time and OP added the numbers... actually that's not how it works). The keys belong to each one of them though not everyone's shown. Xiaojun's 08, Jungwoo's 05, and Ten's 10. But it's weird how Ten and Jungwoo joined Jaehyun to burn the keys. It is also odd that it is in the shape of an old key with a wooden keyring, it's not 'Neo'. I still don't know what the key truly means, what is it supposed to open? Perhaps for the archiving files? Or is it for a door? One key didn't have a keyring (Jaemin found it?) and Mark took it and showed it to the others? Why were Jaehyun, Ten, and Jungwoo burning the chair along with the keys? Are they letting go of something? Perhaps the past because they are moving on to a new universe, a new chapter?

(Another thought) Knowing Jaehyun and Ten's background there must be something. Doyoung was chosen as a special character as of 2021, Xiaojun could become one too now since he was the only one in the water (which I still don't know the reason for.. perhaps something to do with Ether too?). There were many destructions, these were used in BOSS' MV to show the empty and depressing Real World, unlike the Dream World where anything is possible. Are the destroyed structures a sign of them restarting something new? Or is it something bad? One last thing, Red Lights

It isn't just any red light. I tend to go crazy with hints of (round) red lights because of their meaning. Back then, red lighting in the Neo world was used to represent them being in a dream, but this one is round... is there a villainous character present? Or is it a reach?

So what is truly happening in the lore? Is it all hopeful and positive?

End of post, I'm very sorry for throwing in so many questions but essentially I am still unsure of these ideas I have. I am rather skeptical with what I have because before this, the lore was vague to me.

i think people don't really like s2 because it's more of a thriller than actual horror. they build suspense through the season because we don't know what exactly is the mind flayer, the og group is divided, we see el's journey that most people find boring, jancy's trip is more informational than anything, and there's lots of emotional but calm scenes rather than "ride or die" ones. even the finale is more talking than fighting. in general, s2 is... not slow, per se, but not really "die die kill blood monster monster baseball bat scary creepy stuff" y'know? (except for some scenes with steve and the kids) and people expect st to be more of a horror inspired show than a thriller. and we don't get to that part until the final episodes.

but... tbh i think s2 is the best. especially because of how well all the relationships are built! we're introduced to the dustin/steve friendship and we get lumax! we also see byler all the time together and i think it's great showing how much mike loves will and vice versa. the way jancy is built is also sweet and we get bob! bob!!!!!! and murray!!! plus the halloween/autumn aesthetic and the soundtrack??? awesome.

and not to mention the ACTING! the way i feel their emotions in s2 is amazing.

i think that because people come from watching s1 they expect seeing el with the gang and go all "bloody nose destroy powers kill big scary monster". most casual viewers prefer action than character development or study. and it's completely valid, really. but i think s2 has the best script and duos of the show (robin and steve don't count they're on another level and s3's direction is great).

but yeah, in other words i think casual viewers don't like s2 because they get bored. and for bylers this season is our peak ngl it's literally the softest byler content we have.

Now that Batgirls it’s coming to it’s end, I do have a lot of mixed feelings about it.

Because on one hand the book never quite lived to it’s promise. Actually, I do think it went actually against it and it hurt itself in the process, especially in those first issues where, after spending many time with Cass and Steph like we were supposed to, we kinda got the rug pulled from under our feet when not only we had Babs saving the day, but also that weird interlude where it felt like it was a Nightwing book with Babs as co-protagonist and Cass and Steph were like, cameos in their own book.

I think that’s also part of 3 issues on itself: the creative team taking, maybe, too long to find their voices (which eventually they did, but probably too late to turn the ship around, at least in the sales department); the inconsistency with the art and also the whole problem with Babs, which is part of DC’s intention of having their cake and eat it in regards to having her both as Batgirl and Oracle (which is a topic for another time), which not only hinders her character development, but also becomes a constant “hand on the brake” for both Cass and Steph.

There’s also another issue regarding the characterization, that can be more subjective and also nothing new to big 2 superhero comics. How many times and how many characters have been through the whole “a new creative team took them in a completely different direction/characterization”? Too many to count.

But it did felt weird -whether you agree or liked the characterization or not- and like a regression that 2 characters, that at their peak in the late 90′s and 00′s were supposed to be in their 20′s, to suddenly not only be in ther late teens (wasn’t Steph recently confirmed to be 19?), but in many ways, act like teenagers. And look, I’m not saying that you can’t focus the book to attract a younger audience in that way, but in that search for a “voice”, they both -and specially Steph- felt really infantilized for long passages early in the run.

Which also clashed a lot with how both characters were portrayed outside of Batgirls -think on the many other bat-titles, or stuff like Spirit World recently-, where both the art and characterization were aiming towards showing them as older characters.

There’s also the whole “weren’t all the characters supposed to have regained, at least, their complete memories from before the long streak of reboots from the 2010′s?”, which has become like, selective continuity at best, when someone actually remembers to bring that back, if at all.

But like I said before, I do feel like that the book actually got it’s footing, and not only gave us an all time great Cass comic with the silent issue, but overall improved a lot: it remembered that Steph and Cass were supposed to be the leads and Babs was a mentor and a support character; it remembered that they should have fun with their lead characters; it regained visual consistency; lot of good things going on in the later half of the run, but the improvement and the reaction to it was probably either not enough, or not to the point that the editors or the bigger heads wanted. NGL, I had the highest expectations when the book came out, the first arcs left me dissapointed (even though there was some good stuff there, like the musical cadence of the first arc, the punk rock/riot grrrl aesthetics and vibe -that I do feel the book kinda betrayed- which went hand in hand with Jorge Corona’s art while he was still the main artist), but the book improved so much that I was again actually looking forward to it month after month (and not just wanting to see the covers, which along with the silent issue, were probably the best thing to come out from that book -I have the Amano cover framed, and it’s the wallpaper for both my laptop and my cellphone-).

I do think that the more concerning thing right now it’s the uncertainty regarding what’s gonna happen with both Cass and Steph’s future. Because even though they both finally regained the Batgirl mantle (with all the meaning that it brings, both in and outside the pages), we know that there’s still people at DC that see Barbara as the one true Batgirl, and wouldn’t hesitate to take the mantle away from Cass and Steph. I don’t want that to happen, but NGL, seeing Babs as Batgirl in the recent Dawn of DC poster didn’t do much to appease my fears.

I do think that there are great writers that have done promising work with Cass (like Alyssa Wong or Mariko Tamaki) and both they and the character deserves a new book and a continuing presence like she once had.

It does suck that the book it’s getting canceled. Yes, I had my gripes with it, specially in it’s earlier issues, but it did improve so much that losing it right now, with all the uncertainty that it brings for both characters, well, at the very least it sends worrysome signs.

It's always good when I see them pop up on the dash and honestly I dig dark matter so much as a concept, so their aesthetic is really peak. I find SU discourse funny bc i've been on all sides: Been a lover, been a hater, HATED Rose Quartz, loved Rose Quartz, the filler episodes were boring, the filler episodes punched me in the gut, the diamonds should step on me, Bismuth did nothing wrong, etc etc. And the conclusion I've gotten is that i need to sit down and rewatch it, watch SU future and do a proper review bc damm the whiplash of mixed feels is not healthy. The music is always awesome tho

SU was very good at making you change perception of a character at the drop of a hat :D Oh you thought Jasper was peak evil? lol, laughs in Earthlings. Oh you thought Blue Diamond was the "nice" Diamond? lmao, laughs in Reunited (and even earlier but it's not as overt). And ohhhh boy Pearl in S2. Nearly all "good" characters did something very fucked up, and nearly all "bad" characters (bar the less serious ones) had a humanizing trait, which is then up to you to decide how much it justifies/redeems them.

I'm starting to see videos pop up in my feed, asking if SU was ever good and if it still holds up. I don't trust like that, begone clickbaiters. But rewatching the series now that it's officially 10 years old would be interesting :)

(Pearlapis, huh? ngl it smacks me of an "aesthetic" ship first and foremost, because they're both elegant ladies. But mmmh something something they both have experienced being objectified, except one was built to be an object and rose above and the other was apparently of high status and got "degraded". Mh 👀)
