Ok first of all 56*C is fucked and I don't envy you at all, but the reason the UK is panicing over 40c is that out whole country has been built to hold heat, the buildings are angled and built so that they hold as much of the sun's heat as possible so it won't cost a ridiculous amount to heat out houses in the longer colder part of the year, so there's nowhere to escape a heat that yeah we really aren't used to and no-one here had air con because summers didn't used to be this warm, we used to be lucky to see two30c days over summer... also it's practically great British tradition to complain about the weather so.... idk, were out here suffering though and joking about it really only makes you look a bit of an ass online...
No, anon, you're absolutely right, you have my apologies, but I'm 100% certain that the NHS and the government will handle this splendidly.
It's only natural to complain, u guys barely get 30 C in the summer (which is amazing btw, true heaven) I mean I was complaining a LOT this winter in the UK it was cold af for me (and probably not cold enough for you)
(im straying a bit from the subject, my apologies again)
But like, the UK is a pretty dope country like, you've no idea what we do to leave our countries just to come in the UK because it's simply better to live there.
Maybe the UK is not used to handling heatwaves, but they can handle it. (You're absolutely right about the houses thing) but I mean, the NHS works, and it works well. Like you can actually rely on your health system to handle it.
Here, if you call for an ambulance, it'll come 4 hours later at best (if it comes at all lmao) and you'll be kinda dead by the time they take you to a hospital. And then you're gonna 100% die from some hospital disease lmao.
So you see, we're kinda used to dealing with shit on our own.
Heck, last year, the forest of my hometown was fucking burning (because of the heat) and the firefighters were doing nothing about it (cuz they had orders from the government to do nothing about it for some rzn) so we all gathered (the entire hometown, children too) and we put out the fire ourselves to at least save our homes (and yes, it was 56 C when we did that).
My point is, if you were born in the UK, my dude, you've no idea how lucky you are.

I know I'm a week late but I do think people are misunderstanding the point of the Anthony Bourdain quote about Kissinger
The point was never "Anthony Bourdain has good politics and is an unproblematic fave," the point is that even someone with mainstream liberalish politics who goes to Cambodia for a food tour - a, let's be honest, very bougie type of trip to be part of your job - and has a basic understanding of history and a bare minimum of human decency can come away from that bougie food tour wanting to murder Henry Kissinger with their bare hands. The point is that Henry Kissinger fucked up this country so bad the only reason he wasn't lynched decades ago is because it's on the opposite side of the world and the people who were in proximity to him never really saw what it was. The point is that if we could see firsthand what our First World politics do to the Third World we would understand that monsters walk among us and it's a cultural failing that we let them die at home at 100 years old surrounded by their friends and family.

Not as bad as it sounds
Not as bad as it sounds
It’s amazing to hear advocates of capitalism and socialism use the tenants of Judeo-Christianity to justify their political stance. However the Bible says God’s ways are higher than man’s. By defending our political or economic system, we are merely just creating our own god to suit our vision of how life should be. Because I believe in divine Providence I don’t believe in the mainstream…

"This is more about your ego and pride than Palestine" No its about putting pressure on a party that is supporting genocide
It's about logic
Biden and the DNC would rather cause dissent and dissatisfaction within their own party rather than call for a ceasefire
They know they can get away with it because they're a better option than Trump, because they know they could murder babies in front of you and you'll still vote for them.
So why would they call for a ceasefire when they don't need to?
That's why putting the pressure on them, saying they won't get our vote or saying we are looking for other options is so important.
Because that's the only way they will change.
By saying "Vote Blue No Matter Who", you give him and the DNC permission to permit genocide despite the vast majority of public opinion. You say they can do whatever they want because you will vote for them anyways.
You tell them they don't need to do anything else. That in fact they can do whatever they want. You've shown them you are so terrified of your own government that you would rather lie down and let it walk all over you than put any pressure on them at all
They have a year to make a change. Biden could end this all tomorrow, but why would he when he has you doing his dirty work?

There is something just so nostalgic about computers in Half-Life. They are your classical late 90s-early 2000s computers (the Black Mesa incident is supposed to take place somewhere in the 2000s), which were kind of top-notch at the time but now feel like a bit of recursive nostalgia, you see the same computers you would have played Half-Life with IN Half-Life (or Black Mesa or spinoffs).
Meanwhile Half-Life 2 is set somewhere in the 2020s (two decades after Half-Life 1, doesn't it make you feel old?) but the computers you find are about the same. It's justified in setting that it's been two decades of worldwide catastrophes, alien invasions and dystopian Combine dictatorship of course, but the fact that you find the same kind of chunky beige computers I could find at my own cybercafé (my family had a little cybercafé of 4 or 5 computers during the 2000s in a spare room) everywhere makes me so nostalgic.
It's likely that in-universe technology must have advanced but only as far as combating the portal storms and alien invasions (and then completely wrecked by the Combine invasion) with consumer electronics staying frozen in the early 2000s. So no smartphones, no widespread laptops, no LED monitors. That's why it's such a recursive nostalgia. Half-Life is stuck in the era of Half-Life.
I like to imagine that once Gordon and Alyx get a little time to breathe, they would throw an Age of Empires II LAN party.

The poisoned Skittle problem, from the perspective of a non poison Skittle
The metaphor of the bowl of Skittles, some percentage of which are poison, and how many of those Skittles you want to eat, has been used by feminists about men, and republicans about immigrants. I'm increasingly devoid of shits to give about what kind of vile things I'm going to be called, so what the heck, I'll use it too for this.
With class and housing in the US, there is a poisoned Skittle problem; the lower income you go, the higher the percentage of assaults George type people are in the mix. (Please note now that I am Not claiming that the elite are not prone to being assaults Georg, or that there's no assaults Georg in higher income brackets) For added fun, the poorer you are, the more you have to be in physical proximity to others who live in your area, while walking to the store or taking public transportation, increasing your vulnerability to being assaulted, etc. In the suburbs, a lot of the time, the guy who lives three houses down from yours and you have literally never seen each other, so it doesn't matter if he would immediately grab your crotch if he was in crotch-grabbing range, because the two of you have never been that close together. If you live in a more dense environment and travel by foot, your chances of being in crotch-grabbing range are much higher, so a crotch-grabber, etc. in your area is a more concerning problem for you.
Most people very reasonably prefer to live somewhere further away from assaults Georg. The thing is, other people also prefer to live further for assaults Georg, and if you were just living next to assaults Georg, you are a Skittle of indeterminate poison. So when a nice redlined Blue suburb with a great school district is considering if they're going to permit some affordable housing, they are going to look at the income bracket that will be living there and say, "There's too high a percentage of poison Skittles in that income bracket. We don't want to live in a community with assaults Georg, or invite assaults Georg Jr into our nice school, so we don't want affordable housing here."
So now you, as an innocent non poison Skittle are left trying to figure out how you are going to communicate your non poison status so you can get the heck away from the poison Skittles. The current way this information is conveyed is by convincing a higher paid job to hire you, making more money, and buying your way into a better neighborhood. This is a rather lossy way to sort, and shit like constantly disrupted sleep at the weekly hotel from all the shitty people who live there with you doesn't help with better job thing. There's plenty of non poisoned Skittles in that bowl, but how to extract them safely?
The obvious next question is why we as a society don't seem to have any solution to the problem of getting assaulted by assaults Georg other than to individually just try to scramble away from where such folks are statistically and to price the entire category of people who are statistically more likely to be assaults Georg out of certain areas. And now it's a criminal justice system problem and I'll leave that for another day, but overall, the criminal justice system seems a lot more interested in hassling people based on statistical similarities to assaults Georg than doing fuck all about stopping assaults Georg.

it’s really funny how people who def believe that misogyny is a lesser oppression do so by saying they only view american class and race dynamics as the one that matters, like when you say you don’t think misogyny is serious because american white women are privileged in certain ways in the west as esp the US, you are saying that’s the only society you’re willing to view stuff through lmao
