mentor lyme, for @dorics
i heard it's your birthday??? (unless that was a joke in which.... enjoy a free ficlet lmao)
500 words of Lyme in the mentor seat under the readmore :)
*******
Exhaustion burns behind Lyme’s eyes, that particular kind of gritty that marks too many stim pills and shots of caffeine. The mug by her elbow has long gone cold, congealed at the bottom into inedible sludge after the third failed reheating.
Roughly two weeks in, only a handful of tributes left. The Arena has been a hellscape to make up for the lack of combat-worthy tributes, not even a dark horse from the industrial or outlying districts or a clever engineer to spice things up. Claudius has taken more of a beating from the Gamemakers than anyone he’s run into and that’s unlikely to change before the end, but he only has to outlast the others. Nothing else matters.
Low sponsor funds for this early in the Games, but sponsor interest is middling this year in general. Nero’s working the floor — he switched over once his girl died, Lyme can’t even thank him — but people are cagey, ramifications floating unspoken in the air like bad flatulence at a fancy dinner party. The Hunger Games can be brutal, violent, bloody, even tasteless, but Snow forbid anything be political. Nothing dries up people’s wallets like the threat of subversion.
The clock ticks into midnight, numbers on Lyme’s console clicking over from jULY 20 to JULY 21. That endless stretch in the middle of the Arena when time has no meaning to a tribute, and yet something snags in the back of Lyme’s brain. Currently Claudius is curled up in a tree, lashed to the branch by a length of rope, the nearest tributes at least a mile away and the Arena disturbance warnings quiet, and she gives herself the freedom of letting her mind wander.
Twenty-first, twenty-first, what is it about July the twenty-first —
Oh.
Careers don’t celebrate birthdays once they hit Residential, but the Centre keeps records in their files for annual testing purposes. Lyme paid attention to Claudius because of where his fell; early in the Games year, a distinct advantage that she’d argued would counteract his childhood illnesses and naturally rangy frame.
“Happy birthday, kid,” Lyme murmurs. Burt from Nine casts her a sideways glance but doesn’t comment, and she blows out a breath and returns to her screen. Vitals show fever and rapid heartbeat even in sleep, all the signs of low-level blood poisoning. The cream she’d sent would keep him alive, for now.
Fuck it. It’s the kid’s birthday, not that he’ll have any idea. Lyme digs into the sponsor reserves and pulls up a tin of blackberries. Gamemakers never charge that much for berries, relative to dried meat or even bread, but a handful of berries will get him further than a roll and feel like a treat besides. Lyme queues the parachute to fly out when Claudius wakes and leans back, cracking the tendons in her neck.
Leaving Claudius’ camera on her main screen, Lyme tabs over to the brownie recipe she had open on her other display and reads over the instructions again.
It’s not a jinx, she tells herself. It’s a promise.

The Hunger Games is so realistic because it tells us the details that are relevant to the story, it tells us the details that Katniss is interested in and leaves out the rest.
We don't even know the names of Peeta's elder brothers
We don't know what happens to Rue's family after the war or ANY families other than Katniss, Peeta, Madge and Gale's
We don't know the backstory of so many tributes, and for the ones we do like Haymitch and FInnick, we don't know many details
We don't know what exactly happened to Johanna's family
or what happened to Effie during most of the second books until she comes out to be fine in the very end
We don't know what exactly went down between Peeta's father and Katniss's mother and father
WE DONT KNOW MANY DETAILS BUT WE KNOW WHAT'S RELEVANT AND WHAT'S IMPORTANT TO GET THE STORY GOING

The commander from 2, a middle-aged woman named Lyme, takes us on a virtual tour of the Nut, its interior and fortifications, and recounts the failed attempts to seize it. I've crossed paths with her briefly a couple of times since my arrival, and was dogged by the feeling I'd met her before. She's memorable enough, standing over six feet tall and heavily muscled. But it's only when I see a clip of her in the field, leading a raid on the main entrance of the Nut, that something clicks and I realize I'm in the presence of another victor. Lyme, the tribute from District 2, who won her Hunger Games over a generation ago. Effie sent us her tape, among others, to prepare for the Quarter Quell. I've probably caught glimpses of her during the Games over the years, but she's kept a low profile. With my newfound knowledge of Haymitch's and Finnick's treatment, all I can think is: What did the Capitol do to her after she won?

The Victors of the 1st-73rd Games
here is my list of all of the victors of the Hunger Games prior to the first book! DISCLAIMER: this is not an attempt to assert anything about canon. in fact, some of this actually (intentionally) contradicts both canon and fanon! this is simply a reference list for my AU thg fic, holding bright, in which i mention a good amount of my headcanon/AU versions of past victors
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Some notes:
Some nicknames:
Magdalena Flanagan goes by Mags
Anemone Cresta goes by Annie
Emmeline Lin goes by Lyme
Some people in the Capitol call Adrienne Hughes "Mercy"
Dylan Kahale winning at 19 is not a typo; he was 18 at the time of the reaping, but his 19th birthday occurred on the seventeenth day of his Games
The idea that Seeder won the 31st Games comes from the fic The Victors Project by Oisin55
The idea that Cecelia won the 57th Games comes from Fall Into the River by Oisin55
The headcanon that Annie's name is short for Anemone comes from the fic Valor, Valeria by aimmyarrowshigh
A list of the victors sorted by district can be found below the cut :)

Misha and Lyme
(A very late birthday gift for @lorata because I am a serial procrastinator, and could not for the life of me figure out the last section. It’s only *checks calendar* a month late! Set roughly half a year after Misha wins. I believe I read somewhere that Lyme took Claudius hiking, so loosely ties into that I suppose.)
In which Misha gets a tour of the Village, sort of.
The world outside Misha’s window is still asleep when Lyme rips off the covers of her bed. Abruptly cold, she shivers and kicks out to grab the blanket again, throwing it over her shoulders and nestling down to escape the freezing winds blowing through the room.
“Come on,” her mentor says, fondly exasperated, “you said you wanted to see the outside world, didn’t you? We agreed on today.”
Misha groans, and tries to melt into her mattress. Somehow, when she’d agreed to go hiking she hadn’t anticipated the whole waking up in the morning part.
“Any day now,” Lyme continues, and Misha doesn’t have to look at her to know she’s raising her eyebrows. Misha frowns, disgruntled at the prospect of getting up but throws her duvet off anyway, swinging her legs out of bed and onto the carpeted floor. Immediately regretting her choices, she flops back down and shivers.
“Fuck, it’s cold,” she whines, and wraps her arms around herself.
“You’ve been living in this district, how long exactly?” Lyme asks her, wryly. Misha wrinkles her nose, and pokes out a tongue. District Two is somewhat notorious for cold mornings. If you’re up before the sun, then you’re liable to freeze.
“I should probably get dressed, shouldn’t I?” Misha sighs, and rolls of the bed and up to her feet. Having opened her closet, she’s alarmed to find that there’s only three items hung up. Her confusion must show on her face, because Lyme snorts and gestures to the corner.
“If you hadn’t noticed, most of your clothes now live in the pile.” Ahh, so that’s where she’d put her leggings. She scrambles over, nearly slamming into Lyme in her sleep deprived haze. Snow on a shit-pile, she can’t believe she willingly woke up before eleven. Wasn’t the whole point of victory that you make your own schedule?
“Don’t diss Jeremy,” Misha tells her, pretending to be haughty about it. She cracks fast though, and she and Lyme share a laugh before Misha has to dredge out a shirt to wear. Satisfied that she won’t go back to sleep, Lyme moves toward the door again.
“I’ll go make us breakfast, you should probably find a jacket. Can always take it off, but just in case,” she tells her. “Anything specific you want?”
Misha considers, frowning in thought. “It’s gotta be quick, right?” After Lyme’s nod, she continues “can we have omelettes? The ones with the little bits of ham in them?”
“Sure thing. I’m assuming with a cup of far too much caffeine.” Lyme grins.
“Of course,” she snarks, and turns to frantically fish through Jeremy for a jacket. She could have sworn she had left one in there somewhere. Flinging aside a pair of old shorts, and some miscellaneous socks, she triumphantly raises her coat. “Aha! Fantastic.”
Lyme’s already downstairs, so Misha grabs her boots out from under the bed and pulls them up over her feet, tugging violently to avoid undoing the laces. Impatience is key to speed, Misha finds.
She frantically brushed her hair, suddenly invigorated by her earlier excitement the day before. She grabs it in a hunk and ties it back with an elastic, before bounding down the stairs, taking them three at a time.
The stairs creak beneath her feet, as she stomps down and jumps the final distance to the floor. “I’m ready,” she announces, shouting into the kitchen.
“Alright, I packed us lunch last night, can you fill up two water-bottles?” Lyme yells back to her, a yellow sheet busy frying on the pan.
“Sure,” Misha says ducking past her and over to the cabinets. Having successfully found the water-bottles — one blue and one purple — she slides over to Lyme, and head-butts her shoulder. It earns her a hair ruffle in return, and she smiles to herself as she turns on the tap. They stand in companionable silence, Misha screwing on the lids and Lyme flipping the last omelette onto its plate. When she’s done, Misha slips behind her and stealthily grabs her plate, making a quick getaway. She drops the water-bottles into the pack before unceremoniously stabbing her fork into the meal and stuffing it into her mouth.
“Careful,” Lyme calls to her, “it’d be a shame for a Victor to die choking on breakfast, huh?” Misha grins, until she has to catch the bit of omelette that fell out of her mouth. Lyme cackles at the sight, but still shakes her head fondly. Misha glares.
“Don’t say a word.”
Lyme rolls her eyes. “Drink your coffee and we’ll head off once we’ve eaten, okay?”
—————————————————————————————————
When Lyme pushes the door open at 5:35 in the morning, backpack slung over her shoulder, Misha winces. There’s a thin layer of dew on the grass, clinging to the gutter and dripping down the web that a spider made in the corner of her gate. It only reinforces the cold, which Misha can still feel beneath all three of her layers.
Still, it’s nice out actually. The village is different in the early morning. From what she can tell, most of the others aren’t awake yet. Despite the hint of sun rising from the east, it’s still mostly dark outside, a thin layer of mist and fog rising as the temperature increases. Odin’s puttering around his garden, and when he notices them leaving, he offers a wave. Misha waves back cheerfully, before jogging to catch up to Lyme.
“Where are we going?” She asks, still eyeing the various signs of life in the village. Hera’s light is on, and one of Callista’s cats is poking its way behind a curtain on the other side of the path. Sometimes it strikes Misha that she’s part of this community now, that she’s an active member of the village. It’s still a little jarring to see these idols in real life. It’s even more jarring to be one of them. Misha can’t quite wrap her head around it.
“Just out to the lake, it’s a ways up from here, but we should make it up there easily.” Easy for her to say, Misha’s pretty sure her mentor could climb a vertical wall with the amount of muscle she has. She wasn’t so lucky; at 5’11, she’s one of the shortest in the village.
“Where is it?” She asks, leaning forward to wrap her hand around Lyme’s elbow. Lyme points to a clearing up the mountains, a break between the forest cover. It’s surrounded by rocks and Misha can almost make out a shimmer of blue against the stone face.
“See up there,” she says, gesturing above it. “There’s a reservoir from before the Dark Days. It’s not functional any more, so it’s open to the village as a pool.” Misha can faintly make out what she’s talking about; one of the misshapen grey blobs she’d noticed earlier is larger than the others, stretching wider and farther. It mustn’t be a rock then.
“Are we going swimming?” Misha asks, and Lyme cocks her head to the side before answering.
“We can if you want. Though, I’ve never swum before.” Neither has Misha, though the both of them have been thrown into icy water before. Standard centre procedure to ensure that their tributes don’t die of accidental drowning. That probably doesn’t count as swimming, does it?
“Could be good to learn. Things are always more fun when there’s a threat of death.” Lyme gives her the concerned mentor look at that, cuffing her on the head.
“Sure they are,” she says sceptically, and leads Misha forward.
They continue to meander down the cobbled path, until they reach the high, metal gates that guard the village. Misha’s favourite guard, a woman named Vania with a wicked sense of humour, signs them out. She winks at Misha as they walk out the gate.
—————————————————————————————————
The mountains surrounding the village are bracketed with thick forestry and slippery, unstable rocks and by the time they make it to the top, Misha’s soaked in sweat that sticks to her hair to her forehead. Lyme somehow looks unbothered, which how. Lyme notices her incredulity, and grins.
“Girl, you’re only six months out, of course you’re not at your peak.” Misha wrinkles her nose. That may be true, but it’s no less annoying. She’s still the best with swords though; no matter how fresh from the arena she may be. Her skill with the sword never diminished. It’s like a muscle, the memory locked in her brain; a dance she can never forget, the steps ingrained as much as any other part of her.
She leans over her knees to catch her breath, inhaling sharply. By the time she stands again, her back aches from the sudden movement. Now that she’s in less pain, she can finally feel the extent of the sweat, her shirt stuck to her back.
“Gross,” she mutters, peeling it off and whipping it twice, before removing her jacket from her waist and chucking it onto the ground unceremoniously. She groans, arching her back to crack it. Lyme, whose busied herself with the food since they arrived, gestures to the area behind Misha.
“You can check it out if you want,” she says, and Misha narrows her eyes in suspicion. She’s curious, yes, but over the half year since moving to the village, she’s gotten used to Lyme’s mentoring tricks. She gives her mentor a once over, and - detecting no lies, she nods quickly.
“What’ll you do while I’m gone,” she asks, and when Lyme tells her she’ll set up lunch, Misha takes that as her cue to leave. Maybe it’s not a trick.
“Okay, can I go in the water? It’s way too hot,” she asks, gesturing to her burning cheeks. She shucks off her shoes to explore without waiting for an answer.
Lyme nods, shoulders shaking with a repressed laugh and that’s permission enough.
—————————————————————————————————
Hours later, Misha lies on the bank, dripping water and with her hair stuck to her forehead. Lyme, who’s divvied up the sandwiches and is cracking open a can, looks over at her. Misha glances back, raising an eyebrow. She’s not done anything wrong; there’s no reason for Lyme to give her the Mentor Look.
She twists her head back to look upward at the canopy, resting her neck on a log. The light is fading now, and they’ll have to head back soon, but Misha finds the scenery oddly charming. The leaves and brush are dark and curling, and bright spots of orange light dance across the clearing. Lyme had once told her they were sex demons, but she knows Emory and Brutus call them fireflies.
She digs her teeth into her sandwich, and the meat tastes like ash and freedom. When she notices Lyme watching, a complicated expression on her face, Misha just smiles.

It recently occurred to me that after the war, once Panem had stabilized enough for legal documents and the like to matter again, the victors from Two (and One) would probably need last names again? Like, it'd take a while for it to come up but I feel like in the new world, they probably can't keep signing themselves off with just a first name anymore? Do you have any ideas on what that might be like for everyone?
While I imagine many of them would just pick up their old name, would any of them with badddd histories with that name change it? I'm picturing Lyme, Nero, Claudius, and maybe Misha and Petra would have some reason to change it given the opportunity? I guess the ones with partners *might* just switch it to share with them? Or choose something new entirely?
Side note: Assuming it takes quite a few years for it to come up I've kind of had the headcanon that despite not being married Claudius would fully take Eibhlin's last name in the end rather than Beaumont (both for trauma reasons and so he doesn't get bullied for the rest of his life by Misha for having the most pretentious name of all time)
I actually don't think so! we have suggestions in canon that surnames aren't ... really a thing? like some people use them, some people don't, some districts it depends and some seem to disfavour them altogether. possibly there are identifiers, like eg family names (patronym/matronym/whatever) that get used within cultural groups but aren't helpful outside and so don't get used at the reaping.
most centre grads don't pick up their old surnames so i think there's a heavy basis of d2 citizens and even PKs running around without a last name, or with a fake one if they feel like it. now that you bring it up there's probably a asoiaf snow type surname that ex-centre kids wind up taking if they want, but i'd have to think about what it is
however you are correct, in all other universes claudius takes eibhlin's surname and is VERY relieved about it. if it ever came up in thg divergence he'd do the same here too and not think twice

ok actually little info dump on annabeth’s thg verse … she knew from a very young age she wasn’t wanted, and did what most kids in d2 do when they want to be wanted — she goes to the centre. she’s quickly a favorite, perfect soldier made for battle with less of the anger issues they try to avoid. had she not been chosen for the games she probably would have been a peacekeeper. she volunteers for the 72nd hunger games at age 16 (going on seventeen), where she’s mentored by lyme i think (begging on my knees for someone to play her). usually this is where divergences happen; if i’m not rping with a luke in this verse then he’s her district partner and it ends up being them two in the final battle. i see him having some kind of cato moment where he realizes the games are rigged completely against them and the districts and obviously the capitol doesn’t like that, so she wins, but she’ll forever be wracked with guilt and the belief that he let her. as a victor she’s still very much in the capitol and snow’s pocket for a long time, seen as their sort of “golden girl”. percy is the one who finally radicalizes her to turn to the side of the rebellion and the rest is history (literally in a panem history book at some point probably).

"Mockingjay", Chapter 26
Part 3: The Assassin
Chapter 26: Paylor is still there. Katniss takes her rose and internally debates whether Snow is lying or not. She notes that most people she would trust with this matter are dead (Cinna, Boggs, Finnick and Prim). Peeta wouldn't know, and she can't ask Gale. So she turns to Haymitch. She goes to his room and throws water on him (like in CF!) but he hurts her feelings and she flees. The next day, she is bathed when once again Octavia yells "surprise!" The Preps have arrived (just like in CF!) and so has Effie (who we have not seen since CF). Then Gale who doesn't know if it was his and Beetee's bomb. Coin calls the meeting of the remaining Victors. Katniss votes yes and Haymitch votes "with the Mockingjay." Katniss shoots Coin.
-- Last chapter I didn't discuss the fact that Paylor's people (presumably from 8) were the ones to imprison Snow. Do we think that means they captured him? That they were the rebels on the front line? I am curious as to how many soldiers from 13 actually did anything. Certainly those in Squad 451 did. I just wonder if Coin held her troops back so they wouldn't be the ones risking as much since 13 is supposed to be small.
-- RIP to Lyme who must have died sometime between her appearance in 2 and here, or she would be at the meeting. I hope she died in some glorious battle. I imagine the people of 2 really respect military victories and it would suck if she just choked on a corn chip or something.
Children are precious to 13, or so it has always seemed. Well, not me, maybe. Once I had outlived my usefulness, I was expendable. Although I think it's been a long time since I've been considered a child in this war.
But while I think Haymitch might gamble with my life in the arena, I don't think he'd rat me out to Coin.
One thing I have noticed in this reread is that Haymitch and Katniss are not tattletales. He eats her dinner when he first shows up and she says she's going to report him but doesn't, she doesn't report Johanna for stealing her drugs, so this reads as a bit of an acknowledgement of how similar they are.
“They say Plutarch and Haymitch had a hard time keeping her alive,” comments Venia under her breath. “She was imprisoned after your escape, so that helps.”
Effie is back. I wonder if she was held wherever Enobaria was held? It says all the Victors are wearing 13 jumpsuits which doesn't really make sense? Enobaria was never in 13 as far as we know. I guess Coin is making everyone wear them now? We should kill her for that alone. I don't look good in a jumpsuit; I'm too petite.

Part One: What we know
When exactly the rebels in the Capitol began gathering is unknown to us. We know there has been an undercover group “for several years” aiming to overthrow the Capitol (CF, 27). We also learn about Plutarch’s plans during the 10th Anniversary Interview, where Collins mentions that a tribute at the centre of the rebellion had been a plan for at least a decade, and hopes had been centered around candidates such as Finnick (SC).
There is no further information on when the underground group came into being, but we learn about several of their members, including Plutarch, Cinna, Tigris, Cressida, as well as her remaining team. We rightfully can speculate on Portia being included, too.
As this is my favourite element of the series to contemplate on, I have put together a timeline that  paraphrases my own thoughts!
Part Two: My own speculation
50 ADD: Haymitch’s Games as the spark for the rebellion
A young intern Gamemaker Plutarch Heavensbee watches the 50th Hunger Games and sees a fallen rebel in the Games. If only he had had a little aid from a powerful hand within. Painted by injustices that the mad king had done to the people within the Capitol, and a belief that democracy serves Panem better, Plutarch begins to think about rebellion in a riddle: How could one end the tyranny?
Late 50s: Plutarch recruits Caesar Flickerman
Among the first people he recruits is Caesar Flickerman, whose feelings on the Capitol have made a 180 ever since he began to work closely with the tributes. As he is close to the tributes and victors, he is the perfect person to recruit and stay in contact with victors, as well as manipulate the viewership to pay close attention to a potential candidate. Over the years, they become close friends.
60s: More allies join the rebellion
Victors such as Haymitch, Beetee, and Lyme begin to join the rebellion. Within the Capitol, Plutarch recruits people such as Tigris to join their forces. They consider an escape to District 13 as their plan begins to take further shape. Most rebels only know of a few allies as to not compromise the mission.
Late 60s: Searching for a Spartacus
As resources grow and a plan becomes realistic, Plutarch begins to look out for potential candidates. Several fail in the arena, and others do not spark a rebellion as he had hoped.
Plutarch establishes himself as a Head Gamemaker to have a stronger influence on future Games and their Gamemakers, as well as becoming a trusted advisor to Snow.
[The events of my fanfiction ‘She smelled like white roses’ take place here, where Plutarch befriends, falls in love with, and recruits Virgilia Snow, the wife of the President]
Early 70s: Reaching out to District 13 and recruiting more allies
Plutarch finds life in District 13, making his plan to escape to 13 even more viable. He also recruits people such as Cressida and Cinna, the latter who is an aspiring designer and promises to jump in on last notice to a potential District.
Cinna’s role in the rebellion is to wait for a potential candidate, and aid in their appearance before the Games. He has prepared several designs for several Districts.
74 ADD, 74th Reaping Day
Katniss’ volunteering brings hope to a stagnant underground movement. Several things are set into motion, including replacing District 12’s stylist with Cinna on very short notice.
74 ADD, Pre-Games
Katniss notes that a Gamemaker keeps watching her and we could assume that this is Plutarch (THG, 7). We also know Plutarch is present during her evaluation at least, as he is the Gamemaker who falls into the punch bowl (CF, 6). Possibly, he also pressed for a high score to give Katniss further attention, under the guise of punishing her. He might even have pressed to include bow and arrow ‘to make the Games more interesting’.
Caesar as a potential ally would have intentionally asked Peeta about a love back home and allowed for Katniss to spin her dress. The interviews work perfectly in the rebellion’s favour.
74 ADD, The 74th Games
I assume that the rebels, specifically Plutarch and Virgilia Snow, convinced Seneca to a rule change. As Plutarch would have been a former Head Gamemaker retired, he might have had a mentorship role over current Head Gamemakers. This, along with President Snow possibly pushing to quench hope at its height, might have moved Seneca to a rule change that was always meant to be temporary.
74 ADD, Post-Games
Katniss excels far beyond what the underground movement might have hoped for. The early waves of rebellion begin and grow fast, leaving the rebellion to try and set into motion Plutarch’s return to Head Gamemaker status—a process aided by someone close to the President; his wife Virgilia.
Shortly after the end of the 74th Games, the plans for the 75th arena’s layout begin.
75 ADD, The Victory Tour and the Quarter Quell announcement
By the time that Katniss arrives at the Capitol for her victory tour, the flames of rebellion have grown ever further. Plutarch only needs to fuel them and get the main part of the rebels to 13.
Many have questioned Plutarch’s words and how far his plans are when he talks to Katniss. His statement that arenas aren’t built in a day is, I think, code in the same way that his statement on the mockingjay watch is.
The arena that isn’t built in a day is the underground movement, wanting to hint at there being powerful allies who have been waiting for her for a while.
Plutarch wanting her as a mentor figure is, I think, his plan B. In my theory, he is currently pursuing the President to change the Quarter Quell but has not yet pushed far enough. If we look at the movies, then the rule change here, too, only happens after the victory tour. Movie!Plutarch would have assumed Katniss to NOT have been in the arena here, too. But that does not mean it wasn’t his hope to have her inside the arena.
75 ADD, Post Quarter Quell announcement
Plans are brought into motion, final arrangements with District 13 are being made. The rebels finally are seeing their plans brought to life.
Cinna begins his design plans for Katniss’ mockingjay suit and hands them to Plutarch shortly before the beginning of the Quarter Quell.
The victors are informed about the final plan of the Quarter Quell right before its start, and only for as much as they need to know. They learn about the bread code and several plans are laid out that Katniss can escape; the lightning tree not being the sole solution. I assume there are several plans as the bread code changes from four days (without Beetee) to three days (with Beetee). It would also be surprising if Plutarch didn’t have a plan B up his sleeves.
Lastly, I take it that the destruction of the arena was not truly that necessary, as hovercrafts get in and out all the time (with or without the help of an inside source). Plutarch might simply have liked the metaphor of a physically destroyed arena.

TV characters and their mentors
I have realized as I watch TV and find myself liking a character I also start considering who their mentor in @lorata's THG District Two system would be, almost as a personality test. I've put too much thought into it to not publish it somewhere. So, here is a very niche character analysis. TV characters and their District Two mentors. If you are a fan of these shows and have no idea what I'm talking about because you don't read Lorata, do it now. I haven't read the Hunger Games since middle school but I return to Lorata's District Two every few months.
The Mentalist:
Patrick Jane: Callista. The way this fits is actually one of the reasons I decided to actually write a post. He considers himself immune to the rules. He hates authority. He is charming and manipulative, with only fleeting indications he has a conscience. A chaos agent. Exactly what Callista looks for. He would absolutely break up the career alliance early because he decides he doesn't want to kill the youngest tributes if he doesn't have to for his survival and he would rather kill his "allies." It gets Callista in hot water with the other alliance mentors but she is just like "he's excellent."
Teresa Lisbon: Brutus. Lisbon is actually a lot like what Petra would probably become in twenty years. Still hot-headed, still stubborn and rules-focused, still wanting respect at all costs... but a little more chill about it. She's a pretty easy choice for Brutus because she gets things done and doesn't resort to the flashy nonsense of certain Calli tributes. Speaking of... Jane and Lisbon kind of work as an inversion of the classic "back-to-back Victors are a wild girl and chill boy" and would probably hate each other at first before slowly becoming closer as time goes on.
SVU (this is a weird case because I've published a THG AU, but lets just say all of them are Two in this case):
Alex Cabot: This is the hardest of all of them for me, but I'm going to say Devon. She fits the dreamer archetype of always wanting to make things better for everyone (even with the weird season 18 twist SVU pulled, Alex is still fighting for what she perceives as justice). That twist however does rule her out for most of Brutus' branch because it's coloring too far outside the lines. She's very charming and witty, but is focused on trying to do right in the world, rather than the more self-focused goals of Callista or Misha (my runner up for this character).
Olivia Benson: Brutus. Pretty much for the same reasons as Lisbon. She is very closely tied with the rules; even when she disagrees with them, she never really thinks about leaving. She is District Two in the AU I published, so I'm to promote myself and say for more insight into how she views the Games as a Career, go read that.
Rafael Barba: Lyme. The essence of a Lyme tribute. Abusive childhood, attachment issues, using flash to cover for insecurities, depression, and ambition. Has a very tough time in early recovery because he has difficulty squaring the horrors of the Games with his motivation for volunteering---a Claudius-esque (though less intense) desire for family and acceptance.
Sonny Carisi: Tough to decide between Devon and Emory but I'm going to go with Emory. He bakes for everyone. He tries to be a good person even the face of horrors. He has no real desire to do violence to people except when under massive amounts of pressure. He didn't even necessarily need to be volunteering, he just did his best, tried to make friends, and figured they'd tell him to stop when he failed.
Bones (this is another interesting case because I have written a THG AU but have not posted because of how much it uses Lorata's characters in the absence of mentor characters in Bones, and in the AU Temperance is from District Nine, but they will both be Two in this case):
Temperance Brennan: Artemisia. She isn't really sorry about anything from Career training, viewing the Program as the only rational choice given the Capitol's governmental system. She often insults other candidates on accident, because she is the best according to the rankings so why do they take offense when she points it out? She avoids serious injury because she really is the best. It cracks Misha up just reading the file. After it becomes clear in recovery that many of her nightmares come from the foster family that she was sent to after he parents and brother abandoned her, Misha tracks them down to make sure they...understand her displeasure.
Seeley Booth: Emory. He is Two in the AU I'm writing so I've thought this through at length. In the show, he is very pre-occupied with being a good person despite having killed people, and Emory is described as the most decent of the Victors. I've thought of an argument where as Lyme is to Claudius, so Emory would be to Booth growing up in District Two. He also has a habit of pushing all his emotions down because he views them as unimportant, something Emory is shown to have a very good way of countering as a mentor. Emory and Misha meet up to talk about how their Victors are clearly infatuated with each other, Emory dismisses it because Misha had a crush on her, but Misha is like "no this is different." They wager a batch of cookies (Misha's would be baked by Devon). Misha accepts her cookies at Seeley and Temperance's wedding.
ER:
Kerry Weaver: Lyme. A lot of the characters I like have similar vibes, so the explanation for this one is kind of similar to Rafael. She has a harsh persona that is used as a cover for someone struggling with abandonment issues and wanting to belong. As a District Two candidate, she likely would be a lot like Petra (quick to anger, sensitive to being disrespected or not taken seriously), but with less regard for duty and more personal investment. She cares about the people of her district, but she wants to win for herself and the family she would be promised. I've almost written an essay on Kerry and how she behaves and her mental health while she thinks she has a shot at fitting in to ER's found family, and how it declines after she realizes that they will never accept her around season 7 and 8. She really, really wants a family, and Lyme is drawn to those types of tributes.
