From one extreme to another. I finished both these books a couple days ago. #LatinxScreams is a horror anthology of short horror stories written by a diverse group of Latinx authors. I loved the variety of these stories my favorites were Black Sheep, Frijoles, Galan, and Pancho Claus vs Krampus. I highly recommend it for Horror lovers and for me to be able to fly through a short story collection when they're my #readingkryptonite means the collection is worth it. #TheScrewtapeLetters is a book I've been meaning to read since I heard about it in college. I'd even started it a few times but never could get very far. I think the idea of having a demon-view of humanity was a little intimidating for me. The #LibbyApp audiobook was only 4 hrs so I decided to take the plunge. In The Screwtape Letters (C.S Lewis). The uncle Satan tells his nephew:

“Whenever they are attending to the Enemy Himself we are defeated, but there are ways of preventing them from doing so. The simplest is to turn their gaze away from Him towards themselves. Keep them watching their own minds and trying to produce feelings there by the action of their own wills. When they meant to ask Him for charity, let them, instead, start trying to manufacture charitable feelings for themselves and not notice that this is what they are doing. When they meant to pray for courage, let them really be trying to feel brave. When they say they are praying for forgiveness, let them be trying to feel forgiven. Teach them to estimate the value of each prayer by their success in producing the desired feeling; and never let them suspect how much success or failure of that kind depends on whether they are well or ill, fresh or tired, at the moment.”

Just last month, it was made apparent to me to not rely on my own actions. “I’m not close to Allah because my actions aren’t good enough...” or “ I’ll be fine because I’ve prayed for it or I’ve fasted or whatever..” - Such statements begged the challenge: where is my reliance - is it upon my actions or my Lord? Although the prescribed actions are important, I was told that one must realise Allah’s mercy is far greater. This segment from The Screwtape Letters truly resonated with me since, for years, I had felt at a spiritual low because I deemed my actions to be too inconsistent to achieve any closeness to Allah. This thought meant that instead of being able to change myself, I ended up walking even further away from Him yet in a constant state of worry and unease. Mental. “But Allah loves you and if Allah loves you He puts you in those situations that are most beloved to Him i.e. with your head on the ground.” I wanted to walk back towards Allah - I wanted to be in the states that He loved me to be in. So I sought to pray more. And with the simple change in thinking my actions became more consistent. No longer did I trust in my actions, my trust was in Him. “Lord, Let me sincerely want You, so if in the state of prayer is where you will love me then let me endeavour to never miss one and I trust that you will make me better and help me come closer to You”

I am unruly and I wrong myself daily. But in reminding myself of this I pray that one day I never falter from the quest to know Him thus fulfilling the purpose of life, Duas.

Leyendo en este nuevo #libro la importancia de tomas #caminatas a solas (foto 1), me recordó este parrafito de #TheScrewtapeLetters, de #CSLewis (foto 2). Lewis y #Tolkien valoraban mucho el tomar estas caminatas. Me llama la atención que en este nuevo libro se toman ejemplos de las vidas de personas que vivieron siglos antes, como #Lincoln, #Thoreau, #Nietzsche, etc. No hay ningún nuevo descubrimiento. Lo único “nuevo” es el comprobar con la #cienciamoderna los beneficios de prácticas, hábitos o disciplinas antiguas, muchas de ellas olvidadas o teñidas en poco por nosotros los modernos. Me ocurrió lo mismo con otro libro que leí hace poco, #Willpower, que trataba de cómo desarrollar la #fuerzadevoluntad. También Romana como ejemplo hábitos y disciplinas de personajes que vivieron hace siglos. Creo que estamos empezando a re-valorar las enseñanzas y #sabiduría de nuestros antepasados. Today is World Mental Health Day, and I think it’s important to speak up. Because anxiety, depression, and neurodivergence are not jokes or silly things you can come up with. You don’t have ADHD just because you can’t decide what song to play on your phone. You don’t have OCD just because something bugs you if it’s out of place by an inch. These aren’t illnesses that just affect you maybe once a week, you live with them every day. Intrusive thoughts come in constantly and put you down a spiraling hole that you can’t climb out of. Every time we as a society make light of mental health and neurodivergence we stigmatize those who actually have said conditions because they don’t match what we’ve had in our mind as the “typical mentally ill person”. Today I’d like to remind everyone to end the stigma against mental illness. Don’t be afraid to seek therapy or medication to help yourself.
