Shit, even my own psychiatrist has made comments about not trying to fix "broken people". A person's love cannot fix everything. You can encourage, yes. But if a partner was down and out, it's their job to want out of it.

My therapist spent a session convincing me that my asshole ex’s anxiety wasn’t my fault, because there was no way I had the YEARS of training to even figure out what was going on with him, so his blaming me for it was frankly horseshit.

for real??? Not to mention you can't fix anyone's mental illnesses FOR them.

I don’t think he expected me to cure his anxiety outright (he wouldn’t even acknowledge that he needed to get checked out), but the whole “you need to accommodate/coddle me or I get anxious” was definitely a thing. So were the resulting punishments if I set boundaries, such as “if I feel like you’re upset that makes me anxious and this relationship is bad for me” which had me retracing my steps over and over about how I could have been more attuned to possible symptoms and been better...

...which is when my therapist went “stop, you’re taking way too much responsibility for his stuff again, this is not something you can do, and it’s not something you SHOULD do. YOU DO NOT HAVE THE TRAINING.”
