One time for English class I wrote a 6 page paper comparing and contrasting Kilroy Was Here and Paradise Theatre on how they both deal with challenging people thinking politically and I got a 95%
Idk why I felt the need to say this
that is so fucking based dude that's unbelievable
i had meant to write a paper for a history of rock class about caught in the act since it had to be a concert report, and i had to argue three points and i chose:
- political environment affecting music (satanic panic/everyone freaking out about the snowblind lyric)
- the transition to performance rock as a subgenre (caught in the act being hugely dramatic and theatercore)
- political messages sent though lyrical content (literally what kilroy was here is about)
i never ended up writing the essay lol.
i guess this kind of relates but it was rock history class that made me write the most about the continuation of the lore because i had to think things like "okay the great depression happened here, rock started becoming a thing here, world war 2 started here" and so on. every time i think i've covered everything relating to pre- caught in the act i remember i forgot to account for something else. like i forgot to account for the civil rights movement, the hippie/peace movement, multiple wars, it's making me remember that history still went on around this genre and is partially responsible for the shaping and the direction of this genre, it's insane

For the first time - Review #8
Tumblr media
anxious beast
i know next to nothing about Black Country, New Road other than that people are really liking their shit. so i decided to check out their debut to see if it was my sorta thing... and MY GOD. this has gotta be one of the best records i've heard in a hot minute. it's so creative and desperate and raw and genius and energetic and mellow and GAHHH!!!!!
it's everything i love.
many albums have intros. i'm used to it, and i actually like them quite a lot. so when i realized this thing has a 5-minute instrumental opener i got pretty intrigued. it's got this sorta foreign/exotic vibe to it that i really didn't expect going in. when i hear "post-rock" or "post-punk" i tend to think of slower, almost boring emo-ish ideas. but this clearly has none of that. it really sets the tone perfectly, as a "first time" is scary in most cases. anxiety-inducing, terrifying. that's a pretty good way to describe the whole album really. it's scared of itself, almost.
Athens, France introduces us to the vocalist. i honestly don't know if i could say he's "singing" at all, but he's definitely saying words! and it works very well in my opinion. i don't know a lot about the lyrics or if this actually is a concept album, but some of them are quite good, especially on the next couple of tracks. luckily, understanding the lyrics kinda feels secondary to understanding the instrumental and emotion of everything. and the way this guy says shit is just... i mean, if you've been "there" before, you get it. i hope he's okay.
the ending to Science Fair is outstanding. i love the delivery of "And nothing to lose, oh, I was born to run... It's black country out there! It's black country out there! It's black country out there!" oh and also "But as I slowly sobered... I felt the rubbing of shoulders... and the sweat and the children crying... I was just one among crowded stands."
Sunglasses is the longest one, clocking in at nearly 10 minutes. i don't really know if i can talk about this one and do it justice, so i'll just leave some lyrics i like. just know that it's a masterpiece, especially when put alongside it's 2019 version. "I am so ignorant now with all that I've learnt," "I am invincible in these sunglasses," "Leave Kanye out of this,"
normal song length time. Track X kinda feels like a classic Midwest Emo sorta song, which is a very good thing in this case. the saxes and strings really add a new level of depth to this sorta song, though. this whole album feels like a compilation of some of my favorite musical ideas but done to a quality i've never really heard before, honestly. this also acts as a perfect "calm before the storm," and i guess a "calm after the storm?"
Opus. it's what it says it is. this is where the energy is brought up to a maximum. the band pull everything they have out. this is it. the moment everything has built to. it's a very sonically dark and dense ballad that follows the exotic elements from the intro, brining everything full circle. and i absolutely adore everything about that. genuinely a perfect closer. i would say so much more, but honestly, just take a listen for yourself.
so, obviously i love this album, but is it for everybody? hell no. i wish it was, but there are many aspects about this kinda music that will be an instant turn-off for a lot of people. mainly the vocals, as i can see them being annoying or melodramatic in some cases. the almost "theatercore" sound could also throw some off if they really hate that genre, i guess. personally, these are both positives for me.
Black Country, New Road has instantly become a favorite of mine off of this record alone. i will be paying close attention to them going forward as i think they could seriously be considered one of the "greats" of music, especially for the 2020s. just wish i was sooner to the party, honestly. please, please listen to this if it sounds interesting in any way. i promise it won't be anything like you expect.
favorite tracks:
Opus
Sunglasses
Athens, France/Science Fair
overall score: leave kanye out of 10
only six tracks and i still managed to make this one of my longest reviews. next time i might just try to limit myself to 3 paragraphs. anyway, school is starting soon for me so idk how often i'll be able to listen to new stuff.

faq of sorts
What is theatercore? Theatercore is an aesthetic based off of the theater. It consists of both playbills and paint cans, stitched-up costumes and catwalk lights. Theatercore is not also simply bound to musicals, as all sorts of things grace the stage.

Ok I wanted to look at some cool movie theater stuff and I dunno the tag for it. Apparently it’s not cinemacore (even though it totally should be) and theatercore is more stage play stuff.

Jeb Bush Debuts One-Man Presidential Campaign Tragedy Play In Black Box Theater
CORAL GABLES, FL—In an attempt to tell the story of his failed candidacy in his own words, former Florida governor Jeb Bush has rented out a local black box theater and debuted a one-man show that chronicles the tragedy of his 2016 presidential campaign, sources reported Thursday.
According to those in attendance opening night, the two-act solo piece, entitled Jeb? (Or: The Rise And Fall Of An Honest, Consensus-Building Conservative), traces the 64-year-old’s path from well-heeled Republican frontrunner to presidential also-ran in a 150-minute performance that features monologues, character vignettes, musical interludes, and a 10-minute interpretive dance sequence in which Bush starts out as an egg and then goes on to reenact his childhood.
Clad in a black T-shirt and black jeans, the onetime White House hopeful reportedly moves barefoot across the stage, which, apart from a single lectern, is completely empty.
“Why, you might not think it to look at me now, but there was a time when people expected big things from me—though I don’t suppose you’d want to hear about that, would you?” Bush wonders aloud during an early scene, speaking as an elderly version of himself and hobbling downstage with a cane in his hand. “Well, believe it or not, I once stood before a crowd of cheering people who were awfully excited to hear me say, ‘I’m a candidate for president of the United States of America.’”
“Here I am now—it’s June 2015, I’m in Miami, and I’ve just announced my campaign,” continues Bush, mimicking the roar of the crowd as he mimes shaking supporters’ hands and kissing babies. “Yessir, I had the whole world on a string: I’d come up with a strong message about jobs and immigration, and folks had given my Super PAC more than a hundred million bucks. My friends and I thought the future was just waiting for us to reach out and grab it. My God, we were so naïve! Standing before all those bright lights and flashing cameras, I had gone blind.”
Theater patrons confirmed that the show, which runs three nights a week through Dec. 20 at the Gables Playhouse Upstairs Stage, includes a monologue in which candidate Bush, puffing out his chest, speaks confidently about how he will undo President Barack Obama’s policies. Soon, however, the stage lights begin rapidly flickering on and off, his words grow more and more confused, and he wanders out into the aisles of the theater mumbling incoherent syllables into the ears of audience members.
Another memorable scene reportedly finds Bush reenacting the third Republican presidential debate: slouching forward and affecting the Jersey dialect of Chris Christie, then smirking and taking on a sharp nasal tone to impersonate Ted Cruz. Sources said Bush quickly jumps from one part of the stage to another, cycling faster and faster through the personas of all 10 GOP candidates until the scene, like the debate itself, devolves into chaos.
Attendees noted that Bush saves his most damning portrayal for Donald Trump, ending each of his chief antagonist’s lines by whispering, “Lies, lies, lies.” As the Trump character berates him with insults, Bush slowly moves upstage, making himself smaller and smaller and eventually curling up into a fetal position.
“You’ve lost New Hampshire, you’ve lost Iowa, it all comes down to South Carolina,” Bush says in the play’s final moments, repeatedly shouting “South Carolina, here we come!” at the top of his lungs as he drags the lectern upstage and stands behind it. “The people have voted. The returns are in. Fourth place. A crushing, humiliating defeat. It’s all over. My journey has ended.”
“What a poison draught to swallow,” continues Bush, a spotlight slowly contracting until only his anguished face is visible as he falls to his knees and grasps frantically at his hair. “What a bitter pill. And why, why was I forsaken? What manner of country would bleed a man dry, suck the very marrow from his bones, then cast him aside like so many broken playthings? O, perfidy! O, pride! I’m sorry, big brother! I’m sorry, Father! And I’m sorry, Mr. Reagan—to you most of all. I feel the rushing tide of history leaving me to drown in its wake. Yet here, so close to the end, I also find the veil has been lifted, and I can see beyond to catch a glimpse of this nation’s future. Shall I tell you what I see? Oh, don’t ask it! For the vision in my mind’s eye is no shining city on a hill. No, I see only darkness. I see destruction. I see death. God bless America, and God help us all.”
Theater ushers confirmed a section of front-row seats that had been roped off and reserved for members of the Bush family remained empty throughout the performance.

i’m going to say something that will make the liberals angry. spirit phone is a genuinely good album and comparing lemon demon to tally hall and adjacent bands (aka some of the worst theatercore i’ve ever heard in my life) is unfair. put some respect on neil’s name.
