OUAT fanfic: Hook vs. the Seven Dwarves
Dwarves were creatures of the earth, while pirates entrusted themselves to the sea. Dwarves were steady, selfless, and humble, while pirates tended to be proud, self-centered, and unpredictable.
After his first date with Emma, Hook finds himself cornered by the dwarves, who insist on taking him out for drinks and interrogation. Posted as part of "A Time for Everything," but stands on its own.

Aladdin was a great story to begin with. A poor orphan who goes from zero to hero with the help of a funny, wicked, crazy genie, a stubborn and hot-headed but kind and sweet and compassionate princess WITH A FUCKING TIGER FOR A PET, a chubby, silly sultan, and a baddie who's at times simply histerical, with a parrot and all. Who wouldn't LOVE Aladdin? It was my favourite film since babyhood. I couldn't decide what I loved more, the animals, the landscapes, the catchy songs, the badass princess, the sweet and handsome Aladdin (and his awesome pants), or the blue, funny genie (Robbie Williams I'll always love you).
I loved the remake as well, which for me was interesting because I traditionally hate (and fear) remakes. But this one had interesting changes that kept the essence and everything I originally loved while offering a "how about we do this...?" that was quite fantastic. It was as if they'd taken the originally story, respected it, kept its essence, and then thought "you could've included this and not change the essence but enrichen it but I suppose it would've been too long for a cartoon film, how about we include it?" I mean the scene of the local dances? with the typical Arabian parties? my god that was awesome. And the idea of the princess being more badass and stronger and with political ambitions was actually fitting. The remake only took what was already there to begin with and pushed it to the next level.
And then take Snow White. Take Rapunzel. Cinderella. Beauty and the Beast. These stories are uninteresting in this day and age, and educate girls to be something we no longer feel like being, they're not empowering precisely. But we allow them, and read them to our children, and put the movies because 1) It's just cartoons, 2) they teach our children the world we used to live in, 3) they teach about European folklore and mythology 4) they teach about classic literature authors, 5) they allow us to show our children something they can judge for themselves as they grow and learn from, thinking for themselves instead of us planting our ideas and adult lenses on them and ruining the magic and fun for them.
What we don't do, or at least we SHOULDN'T do is try to transform them into modern, female-empowerment badass princess stories that they're not, with human remakes that look and feel far more real, and that attempt to erase history, clean the original story (only to ruin the little that was worthwhile of them) and shame anybody who enjoyed the original for some reason (like the magic, the songs, the pretty dresses or the funny dwarfs). The result will always suck, and it only gives the message of "if you look at children's stories with adult lenses and therefore find them horrible and problematic but you liked them as a child or read them to your children, them you're a racist, sexist asshole and you suck, here's our improved version".

Epel and The Seven Dwarves
Tumblr media
So… talking with my Mom and sister and it’s happened again. Epel is the target of this analysis/theory this time. If you’ve read my post about Jamil, this one is in a similar vein. I make use of a theory (I still don’t know whose it is originally, but you are brilliant whoever you are), I’ll make a point to summarize this theory though, so this hopefully won’t get too confusing. Understand that this is only partially me/my mom/my sister’s work. Spoilers under the cut and this gets a little long, so fair warning.
So the theory I’m drawing from goes like this: what if the boys aren’t just twisted off a villain/one character? What if they had multiple inspirations from their movie? Most notably, what if they had a heroic character for their inspiration in addition to their token villain? This could explain why the Twisted Wonderland characters are so well-rounded, they have more than one source of inspiration. Epel, for instance, is potentially based on the poisoned apple from Snow White. If that is inspiration, the apple doesn’t have much personality meanwhile our little first year does. Enter Mom and my sister and please know that this isn’t an elaborate joke regarding Epel’s height.
Snow White has a lot of characters but the seven dwarves are incredibly important to the film. Now to make my life a little bit easier I’m just going to focus on one of the dwarves. One of the more famous ones to be specific. Namely, Grumpy.
Aesthetically speaking, Grumpy and Epel have nothing in common. Personality and actions wise though… We have a bit more to work with.
Grumpy is described as a he-man woman hater. Now, in no way do I think that Epel hates women. I do, however, think that Epel hates being mistaken for one. Epel, like many boys his age, wants to be seen as a man and thus tries his very hardest to appear manly and behave in a manly way. So we have our he-man connection. Grumpy is portrayed as a sourpuss. Always grouchy, overbearing, and short-fused. These less than pleasant traits hide a very warm-hearted soul that is seldom shown though. Epel’s actions also disguise his true nature. This does also have to do with him being the poisoned apple which was beautiful but deadly. Epel behaves in a delicate fashion when he is, in fact, quite a rough individual. He also has a short-fuse and can be grouchy at times, especially when forced to do something he doesn’t like. Which is perfectly acceptable. No one likes doing things they don’t agree with. Grumpy also frequently doubts his leader’s, Doc, abilities. This is similar to how Epel sometimes doubts Vil’s abilities. Especially if those abilities have anything to do with being manly.
Okay, while there are few to zero shared design elements to the characters of Epel and Grumpy, Epel's home does have distinctly dwarf looking elements. Namely the piano. In the Harveston Kelkkarotu event (Japanese only so far) we see Epel’s hometown and one of the backgrounds has a piano in it.
Tumblr media
We see this same piano in the dwarves house.
Tumblr media
In addition to this, Epel shares the innate sweetness that all of the dwarves have. There is also a sort of innocence to his character that some of the dwarfs (Bashful, Dopey, etc.) possess.
I could probably go on, but I’m going to stop here since this is already a fairly lengthy post. The connection here between Epel and the dwarves isn’t the strongest, but it is intriguing nonetheless. I for one think it is a wonderful way to explain the depth of Epel’s character. I would love to hear others’ thoughts and theories on this.

OUAT Thoughts Pt.22--Episodes 2-3
I have watched through S3E3; spoilers DNI. Also, spoiler warning for anyone further behind than I am.
—These episodes have had some pretty obvious plot devices in them, such as the map needing ✨special circumstances✨ to activate, but I don’t mind. It’s yielded some insight for Emma’s character, as well as fun, deadly family adventures.
—Speaking of deadly, if Charming dies I will be very upset. Also, he’s being stupid, not telling Snow that he’s been poisoned. Sure, it saves her some worry, but in the end it doesn’t help much.
—Snow and Charming drawing their swords in unison is couple goals.
—Fake Excalibur was a pretty sword. Of course, now they’ve set the expectation that I might see the real Excalibur eventually, so they’ve gotta make that the most spectacular weapon in the universe.
—I love that Rumplestiltskin conjured an image of Belle when he wanted someone to talk to. (Although, I do wonder if Belle is in any way aware of it, like her spirit was transported to Neverland; or if it’s just a very vivid hallucination.)
—I’d like to take the fact that he’s worried about making the selfish choice as a sign that he genuinely wants to do better this time.
—That straw doll following Rump around the island is creepy as hell. No thank you.
—The parallels between Emma giving up her kid, like her parents did, and Rump abandoning his kid, like his father did, intrigue me. As depressing as these plot points are, they’re also somewhat hopeful, as both Emma and Rump are trying to do better. It’s a nice, rare appearance of ending the cycle.
—Confession time! I’ve watched most of the movies in the Netflix Christmas Movie Cinematic Universe. I watch them on repeat every Christmas. (My mom watches those with me, too.) So of course, we had a jolly moment recognizing Tinkerbelle as Queen Amber from the Christmas Prince movies.
—Tinkerbelle is definitely cute, but she’s not quite my type. Especially when she’s all grimy and whatnot in Neverland.
—Her bright green dress in the fairytale world is among the best fairy outfits, though. Seriously, the Blue Fairy’s dress is ugly as all get-out. Just disgusting.
—Henry trying to shoot Peter was outstanding. I just wish it had worked.
—I hope at some point Emma and her parents manage to patch things up, because their current situation makes me very sad for both of them. It also makes Emma a little bit hypocritical, because she seems to expect Henry to forgive her entirely, but she isn’t willing to extend forgiveness to Snow and Charming. She’s a bit oblivious at times, so I’m willing to bet she’s not even aware of that irony.
—I want to know more about Hook and Tinkerbelle’s past adventures together. Sounds fun!
—Robin Hood being a father is a dynamic I really like. He needs something to fight for, or he just seems like a rogue with no reason for existence—and also no motivation is not a good way to build a character—but usually the only reason he gets is a vendetta. And you all know, there’s more than enough vendettas to go around already. Having his introductory motivation be his family is a lovely twist on the character.
—Robin is Regina’s soulmate? Color me surprised! I will now put yet another portion of my shipping energy (which believe me, is just about limitless) into hoping they get a happy ending. Besides, then Regina would get another kid in the bargain, which would give Henry a little brother, and that’s even better!
—That weird, pale, blond Lost Boy looks like his name should be Jimmy. Don’t know why, he just does.
—Baelfire actually made it to Neverland! I am both thrilled and trembling with fear. With him now in the equation, I have to place my bets on either him or Rump dying, and since Bae recently had a deathfake, it’s probably going to be Rump.
—On the other hand, maybe now Bae will have a chance to see his father doing the right thing. The would be excellent.
—Just remembered that Rump sent his dagger off with his shadow. Boss move, honey, but also stupid. It could possibly be the cause of that whole death thing.
—Getting a bit of full-on Dark One Rumplestiltskin was a fun part of these episodes. I love any scene where he’s at his spinning wheel.
—Snow White’s vest and jacket when she’s rebelling against Regina are gorgeous. Also, I adore that her hair is messy, because she’s living in a forest and it should be.
—The dwarves being like seven overprotective, angry brothers is hilarious to me. But I appreciate that they were willing to back down when they realized that Charming wants what’s best for Snow. Overprotective becomes overbearing rather quickly, and then it’s no fun.
—How dare they give me a faint glimmer of lesbianism and then take it away? I mean, for all I know it’s a total fakeout and Mulan is in love with Philip after all, but come on!
—Her being a Merry Man is cool, though. Maybe Robin could take them to, say, Scotland or Arendelle, and Mulan could meet one of the other Disney Lesbians™?

The Seven Dwarves were apart of the Snow White Fairy Tale and they were always good guys. So it does seem like going backwards that Disney is changing the fairy tale and thus taking jobs away from Little People/Dwarves. Yes they could of taken regular sized people and given the illusion of them being little like in the LOTR. However, it seems like Disney is avoiding the fact that the seven Dwarve's where always Dwarve's.
I personally always saw the seven dwarves based on magic, like in LOTR the Dwarve's were magic race. So what is wrong with Dwarve's? Why can't people with Dwarfism play Dwarfs? Why change the fairytale and not allow little people from being apart of this film?
This woke guy is going in circles it seems.

Note
I'm so tired of people saying that the Prince from Snow White is a creep for kissing Snow White when he thought she was dead.
People act as if he put his tongue down her throat while she looks like a regular corpse.
Maybe I'm just more comfortable with death because of my upbringing.
There's a European tradition that you would kiss dead people goodbye. You would also wait with a dying person because dying alone was one of the most horrible ways to die.
In Poland, you would spend three days with the dead body of your relative in the house so family and friends have time to say goodbyes. We even have pictures of family members in coffins, so we could remember them.
Yeah, it's a very post-modern, historically, culturally-small-minded way to look at it.
Specifically in this movie (which is a fairy tale's fairy tale) people just...totally ignore the scene where The Prince is introduced.
Seriously and truthfully, BECAUSE the Prince only takes action in three scenes of the movie, you HAVE to take all three of them very very seriously. Because thats all there is to know about him. That's how fairy tales work: lots of information hiding under very brief, simple snippets of information. It's called nuance.
Anyway.
The Prince kisses Snow White as a culmination of their promised love for each other.
Tumblr media
First scene he's in, he falls in love with her because of her obvious purity and he overhears her longing for someone to love her. Then she runs away because she's not sure of him, and doesn't know him. But he sings his part of the song, which is all about how he has just one heart to give, one devotion to spend, and he's choosing to give it and spend it on her if she'll have him.
Tumblr media
And she will have him. How do we know? She sends a kiss to him on the dove. That's how the exchange ends; that's how she responds, and that's why he leaves satisfied. It's their engagement scene. They're promising their hearts to each other.
Tumblr media
Fast-forward, the Queen messes up what might have been the natural follow-through of that engagement which is marriage by trying to kill Snow White, she's living in the woods, but she won't forget the Prince and wholeheartedly believes he'll come find her.
Tumblr media
And the very next thing we hear about him is that he keeps his promise. He's got one heart, one love, one devotion, and it's promised to Snow White, and he will not stop searching for her. When he finds her, he's returning her kiss from their engagement scene. He thinks she's dead, but he has to finish his quest anyway. This is him, trying to keep his promise even if she's dead; he's trying to fulfill the exchange they had when they saw each other last.
Tumblr media
It's ridiculous to assume that she needed to be awake and alive to give permission for him to kiss her; it's ignorant of the whole relationship, symbolic and literal, between these two fairy tale characters. She already sent him her kiss and her heart; he already promised to claim it; he's fulfilling the promise in that scene.
Tumblr media
Crazy postmodern people, don't know how to take in a story. Not everything gets to have your socio-cultural lens imposed upon it.
