#the video tutorials cover that but i had to fast forward through most of it

Every bookbinding tutorial i found online: "DO NOT TRY THE COPTIC STITCH AS A BEGINNER ITS TOO ADVANCED"
Me who has only bound one book before and used a completely different method: "ehh it can't be that hard"
2 hours later
Tumblr media
.....I was right. Its not that hard.
#its technically slightly wrong cuz i dont have signatures#im just doing one folded piece of paper at a time#which does take longer#but i was expecting that#doing actual signatures would have a. been way too thick cuz im using watercolor paper and getting them to lay flat wouldve been annoying#and also i wouldve had to pay a lot more attention to how the pages were actually laid out#and this project was already kinda overwhelming without that added in#im also combining methods a bit cuz im also gonna glue the spine with wood glue for extra support#and i also dont want the stitching to be visible#every tutorial was also like ''coptic stitch is great for exposed stitching!!!'' like cool story. not why im using it. gonna cover that shit#also finding one that wasnt in video form AND actually showed everything i needed to know was completely impossible apparently#i needed to know how to attach a fresh string when i run out cuz i always struggle with that in any sewing project#and generally need a refresher each time#and all the written ones were just like ''just make sure your string is long enough before hand!!! but not so much that it becomes#tangled!!!'' bitch im making a much thicker book than you. i cannot just use ONE string. it b#absolutely WILL become tangled if i make it long enough to finish the binding in one go.#yall are WEAK#my book is 3 times thicker than yours#i need to know how to attach a fresh string#the video tutorials cover that but i had to fast forward through most of it#im running out of steam for tonight (hence why im here and not working on it) so ill be finishing this tomorrow#was hoping to get this part done over the weekend but i ended up not getting a lot of the writing done on friday as i intended#cuz i ended up having to play tech support for my friend so she could update her sims mods

Forefront Identification - Current Concept Artists
There are many great people from many countries working in the expanding subject of concept art. To guide creative teams and motivate the upcoming generation of artists, great concept artists have led a new era of digital art. Below will be just a few concept artists in my current field.
Feng Zhu is arguably the most well-known concept artist who also teaches. He started off in the 1990s working on vintage PC and PlayStation 1 games and gradually rose through the ranks. Feng now owns and operates the FZD School of Design, a concept art school. It's a 12-month course with a distinct emphasis on concept art and game/movie illustration. If you're interested in learning more about FZD, check out our exclusive interview with a former student (Staff, 2021).
Tumblr media
Noah Bradley is a 2D concept artist. He never wanted to be an artist but in fact a games designer. Somehow throughout his life, he always had that gut feeling that he wanted to be a concept artist. At the time he specialised in environments as everyone else was designing and creating characters. Fast forward to him now, Bradley is teaching art at an art camp; as well as writing a book on how to paint figures better. Bradley also taught the art of freelancing and where to begin. It seems he has battled with his art career since school and now he is helping other people who are probably going through the same thing.
Tumblr media
At the moment, Andy Park is employed by Marvel Studios as a concept artist and visual development supervisor. Thor: Ragnarok, Ant-Man & the Wasp, Captain Marvel, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor: The Dark World, Iron Man 3, and The Avengers are just a few of the Marvel movies Andy has contributed to (Conceptartworld, 2017). He was a top concept artist on the critically acclaimed God of War video game series (God of War 2, God of War 3, God of War: Chains of Olympus, and God of War: Ascension) at Sony Computer Entertainment of America (Andy Park, 2020).
Tumblr media
Oga spent nearly ten years working for Sony Computer Entertainment and Square Enix, two Japanese video game businesses. Spending the next six years working for himself. Oga served as the series' primary concept artist (as of 2019). Oga has contributed to films, video games, and science fiction books (Oga, 2023).
Tumblr media
I aspire to get to the level of detail these artists have. Similar to Zhu, I want to push myself to draw from the demand of my industry.

my health.
k so to run it down: basically around five months ago i started experiencing a lot of fatigue and daytime sleepiness without any lifestyle changes. at first i chalked it up to stress, possibly spurred by my family member going through chemo, but it was too abnormal to just be from stress.
i started waking up every day with a headache and was struggling a lot more to sleep. i have always snored, since i was a kid, and i used to always wake up at least once during the night to use the bathroom, but that started becoming more frequent. i started waking up feeling so tired and exhausted, every single day. and i would go through the whole day like that. i'm still going through most of my day like that.
fast forward about 2 months and i finally was able to bring up these recent issues to my psychiatrist and my primary doctor. both of them suggested bloodwork to test for different vitamin deficiencies. before i could have the bloodwork done, i experienced cataplexy for the first time. it was terrifying.
cataplexy is a sudden loss of muscle tone and is most commonly associated with type 1 narcolepsy. it can be just one part of the body (your face going slack, for example) or it can affect your entire body at once (which is what happened to me). i was laying in my bed watching tv, feeling very sad and anxious, my arms struggling to type on my computer, when i lifted my arm up and promptly had it fall on my face. i tried to move my arms, and couldn't. i tried to move my legs and couldn't. i tried and tried to move everything, anything, and couldn't. the only thing i could move was my face, and i didn't even really have control over that. i was just laying there, arms covering my head, stuck, and crying uncontrollably. i couldn't even call for help. all i could do was cry and feel. it was probably 3 or 4 full minutes before i felt my abdominal muscles twinging, and suddenly i could move again. i was so relieved, but also terrified.
i just so happened to have a video intake appointment the following morning with a nurse practitioner at the sleep clinic. we talked about what had happened, as well as my history of snoring and my family history of sleep apnea. she notes that it doesn't sound like narcolepsy because i've never experienced this before, but also says that cataplexy can be associated with and caused by other things, although it is rare. she believes that what is most likely happening is that my body and brain are so tired from consistent poor sleep caused by possible sleep apnea, that it is beginning to cause other issues (such as the cataplexy).
i take the home sleep test on a friday night. i have to watch a youtube tutorial on how to hook it up correctly. my adhd is so thankful for the very specific instructions. i bring it to the clinic the following monday morning. i am diagnosed with sleep apnea and sleep paralysis, only one of which is a bit of a surprise. honestly, idk how i didn't realize i have sleep paralysis. though i don't think i've ever hallucinated (save for maybe once when i was a kid), i regularly find that my brain is awake and aware during the night, but that i can't move my body. really, i thought this was normal and something everyone experienced. i just thought like, in that alpha sleep, your brain was awake but your body was still. i didn't realize that being unable to move even when you wanted to was sleep paralysis.
anyway. moving on. i get a CPAP machine. ohhhhh my cpap. how i love love love my cpap. sure it makes me break out around my nose a little more, and sure sometimes the straps bother the tops of my ears where they meet the skin on my skull, but dammit if that bitch doesn't help me sleep. cpap machine my beloved, thank you for helping me to get oxygen throughout the night. thank you for allowing me to dream again. i don't think i've dreamed consistently in years.
however. the cpap is only helping so much. i've been using it all night every night for almost 3 weeks and only some of my problems have started to improve. yes, i'm sleeping through the night most nights, and i'm waking up without those awful headaches, and i'm sleeping deeply enough to dream again, and i'm waking up with a bit more energy. but i'm still so tired. i know it can take 6-8 weeks to fully feel all the positive effects but. i'm so so tired. I've stopped experiencing cataplexy but my legs feel so weak every day, and my arms often do too. my legs are constantly experiencing that crawling feeling that i've come to know so well with restless leg syndrome, but now its happening all afternoon and evening, even when i'm not trying to sleep. my legs have started to tic now, twitching and jerking upward toward my abdomen. it happens most often in the evening, and used to only happen sometimes when i was very very tired but has since started happening every day. i'm just so discouraged and anxious and sad. i'm sad that this is happening and i'm sad that i don't know why. this pandemic and my family member's cancer have already been so detrimental to my mental health, my depression has gotten so bad again, and my anxiety has worsened. and now, this. i'm just. i'm so tired.
anyway, that's it pretty much. i just wanted to spell it all out and like. ask for help? offer validation?? idk. if you're going through or have gone through anything like this, let me know. let me know what worked for you, let me know if this post helped you feel more valid, let me know anything you want to let me know. i think asks are open.

ok ok prompts!!! so, I would be Delighted by some more qinxiyao family fic (deleted scenes or things you might have wanted to include in the big bang fic but didn't get to?), or, alternately, anything in the modern tcgf au? anything at all; they're all so excellent <3
both of these are such excellent prompts I started working on both of them, but the modern au got finished first! I’ll probably both a) do a lot of edits on this and b) do the qinxiyao family fic in a week or so, but here this is for now. Also, for those not in James and my brains, this is a very small part of a very large AU! Small note, all characters appearing in this fic are trans; however, He Xuan is still very much an egg and so they are referred to throughout the fic as “he/him,” although SQX at least is aware of this and wondering when to bring it up with her. She is, however, unaware that “Ming Yi” is a stolen identity and He Xuan is actually the eco-terrorist who’s been blowing up her brother’s fish hatcheries. It’s a long story.
If Xie Lian was being honest, he didn't much like the internet. It was so bright and everything moved too fast. People used a bewildering array of slang and images. It was surprisingly difficult to avoid spending hours reading upsetting news stories. People spent days arguing about pornography.
Also, his phone didn't really connect to WiFi very well. Even by the loosest definitions of the word, he hardly counted as a netizen.
People were usually shocked when he told them this, though, because Xie Lian's best friend was one of China's most popular beauty influencers.
Xie Lian's face appeared on her Weibo with some regularity. She talked about him often. He'd gone viral three separate times on Douyin, entirely accidentally.
What Shi Qingxuan was most famous for, however, was makeup tutorials. He had never actually appeared in one of these, but, since there were very few people in the world capable of saying no to a very determined Shi Qingxuan, this was about to change. He was used to being in her charmingly decorated little apartment but not quite used to becoming a decorated thing himself. He'd even put on one of the outfits Hua Cheng had designed and sewn for him, based on some of his old dance costumes and a few frantic weeks of historical research, and kept swishing the skirts around his legs.
Shi Qingxuan started setting up, chattering away to Xie Lian as she did. "You need anything before we start? Bathroom, water, a snack? I edit my videos pretty heavily, so we can always take a break, but it’s good to be comfy."
"No, I'm fine," Xie Lian said, and then had to close his eyes when she clicked on the ring light.
He fiddled with the makeup compacts laid out on the table.
Shi Qingxuan adjusted her light, scootched Xie Lian’s chair a little to the left and a little back, and then fiddled with the camera. It was quite the involved operation, Xie Lian thought; he knew a lot went into making videos, but he hadn’t realized it took this much effort before the camera was even on. Shi Qingxuan had done his makeup before, of course, but mostly just for fun, or something she could take a picture of and post on Weibo. It had been so long since he'd been filmed.
He watched Shi Qingxuan press record on her camera and then sit back and flash it a smile, putting on her Influencer Face. She squeezed his hand under the table.
“Hi everyone, welcome to Feng Shi!” she said, chirpy. “I’m Shi Qingxuan, and today we’re doing xianxia makeup with my good friend, Xie Lian. Now, for this look, we’re going to need…”
When Xie Lian was little, the makeup artists for his dance troupe had known he took about twice as long as anyone else did to get his makeup done. He was the darling of the company, though, so this was tolerated with fondness.
He didn't like the way the foundation felt on his face when it dried. His eyes watered when they put on eyeliner. He liked to spin his chair from side to side.
He'd had much worse things on his face than paint since then, and had learned how to be still.
Shi Qingxuan patted his hand cheerfully as she pulled out the setting powder.
"You're always one of my favorite models," she said. "You're so photogenic and so patient!"
"Thank you," Xie Lian said, and held still while she brushed it in his face.
Ruoye, probably noticing the warmth, slithered out of Xie Lian's robes and curled up on top of his head so she could get the full blast of heat from the ring light. She flickered out her tongue to scent Shi Qingxuan when she leaned in with a liquid eyeliner pen.
Shi Qingxuan made little kissy sounds at her, which only confirmed Xie Lian's certainty that he had good taste in friends. Most people were startled by Ruoye originally, but how they responded to her after Xie Lian introduced them was a good litmus test.
Ruoye settled in, and Xie Lian reached up a finger to stroke her scales.
He was feeling good, content and warm, happy to sit still. Then the apartment door clicked open, and Xie Lian stiffened.
"Ming-xiong? Is that you?" Shi Qingxuan called.
Ming Yi mumbled something back and shuffled into the room, buried deep in his black hoodie. As always, Xie Lian's first thought upon seeing him was wondering how he could see through all that hair.
The hoodie had a fish skeleton painted on it that he recognized instantly as one of Hua Cheng's drawings; it made Xie Lian smile, thinking of how insistent San Lang was that they absolutely weren't friends, no way, there was no particular reason he would make custom hoodies for Ming Yi. The fish were a coincidence. He’d even made Ming Yi custom salmon breakup boots while proclaiming it meant nothing.
Xie Lian, wearing an elaborate hanfu Hua Cheng had designed, sewn, and embroidered himself, even making him a period-appropriate duduo to flatten his chest, absolutely did not buy any of these excuses. Hua Cheng covered people he cared about with his art.
Ming Yi grunted a greeting and wandered off, probably to raid the fridge. Shi Qingxuan winked at Xie Lian.
“I’ll edit most of this out,” she said, conspiratorial, “But my viewers love Ming-xiong. Especially when he’s out of focus in the background. They’ve made memes. I haven’t told them anything about him. It’s good to keep a little mystery! It keeps people watching.”
Xie Lian, having no real idea what she was talking about, smiled and suppressed his instinct to nod. Shi Qingxuan began painting a flower on his forehead with red pigment.
Finally, Shi Qingxuan gently removed Ruoye from Xie Lian’s head and shoulders and settled a wig cap over his hair, then the wig she’d pre-prepared. A few bobby pins, a few tucks, and then she stepped back, grinning.
“Ta-dah! How do you like it, taizi dianxia?”
“It’s beautiful,” Xie Lian said, honestly.
“We’ll end the video here, I think,” she said, “But I’ll get some posed photos of you to edit in here if that’s alright. Oh, tilt your head back and forth a little? Good. Smile at the camera!”
Shi Qingxuan fluttered her fingers at the camera in a wave; Xie Lian waved too, a few seconds later. As she leaned forward to click off the camera he straightened his legs out to try and loosen them up. His knees made terrible crunching sounds as they stretched.
“You can take a little break if you want,” Shi Qingxuan said. “I’ll set up the area where we’ll take photos, but I’ll try to make it quick. You’re a darling for sitting through all this, you know?"
She was already bustling around again. She seemed to have an endless fountain of energy; Xie Lian found it admirable. He laid flat on his back on her bed, careful to not get makeup on her sheets or wrinkle his clothes. Ming Yi sat next to him, eating shrimp chips. He put a few directly into Xie Lian's mouth, feeding him like a little bird, and Xie Lian felt warm. Like Hua Cheng, it could be hard to know when Ming Yi liked you, but there were ways to tell.
He let Shi Qingxuan pose him until she was satisfied with the numbers of pictures she’d taken, trying very hard not to feel like the chuunibyou teenager he’d once been. He felt himself mostly immune to embarrassment at this point, but he supposed there were always exceptions.
Eventually, they cleaned up, although Xie Lian had promised Hua Cheng to show off the full look, so he didn’t get changed or clean his face.
“I’ll buy dinner,” Shi Qingxuan said. “We deserve it. You too, Ming-xiong!”
She herded them both out of the apartment and down the street to a small noodles stall. They all ordered (in He Xuan’s case, three bowls) and Xie Lian was fumbling for his phone when he heard Shi Qingxuan cheerfully tell the clerk to put it all on the same ticket. She tapped her phone to pay for it all before Xie Lian could protest.
A few people asked Xie Lian for pictures as they ate. He posed obligingly, hoping he hadn't spilled any sauce on his clothes while eating. When he was done, he packed up his leftovers, let Shi Qingxuan nag him into calling a Didi instead of trying to walk home, and bid both her and Ming Yi farewell. Ruoye, who had spent most of the time they were eating in Xie Lian's backpack, made a brief appearance too like she wanted to say goodbye as well.
Xie Lian clicked his own apartment door closed quietly and tiptoed over to slide his leftovers into the refrigerator. Down the hall, a light shone out from underneath Hua Cheng's studio door.
There was an old picture of the two of them on the fridge; it was them in a hospital pediatric ward group room. Xie Lian, age fifteen, was beaming at the camera, his "FIGHT! JUVENILE SLE" shirt a bright red and his pants an immaculate white. Next to him, Hua Cheng, his right eye patched with patterned tape, bald and tiny, stared up at him with devotion.
Ruoye bonked her head gently on the freezer door. Xie Lian pulled out one of her mice and slid her gently into her tank before giving her the treat; she was swallowing the mouse as he left the kitchen.
Hua Cheng turned to him as Xie Lian opened the door to his studio. His eye got wide, and his face looked like it did sometimes when he looked at Xie Lian, like he was seeing something holy. He slid his headphones off his ears.
Xie Lian did a little twirl for him, letting him see the way the fabric moved, and then tilted his face up for a kiss when Hua Cheng came over to him.
“Gege, you look beautiful,” he said.
“San Lang,” said Xie Lian. “It’s all you and Qingxuan. I’ll get her to send you the pictures later.”
Hua Cheng kissed the top of his head. He was dressed down, in a soft shirt and pants, not wearing his prosthetic eye. Xie Lian leaned his head into Hua Cheng’s chest.
“Gege seems tired,” Hua Cheng said. “Would you like to get ready for bed? Do you need dinner or your medicine? I can help you take all that off.”
“San Lang, you’re working,” Xie Lian said. “I already ate, so I think I’d like to sleep. But you don’t have to help.”
"Gege is more important than commissions," Hua Cheng said, and Xie Lian let him bundle him off to bed.

Hey guys, Chris here again! Sorry it’s been so long since the last post!
one of the reasons it has been so long is because we’ve been hard at work here putting out a ton of new releases. This marks a pretty big shift in focus for the label, and I wanted to take a bit of time to go into detail about the overall “sound” of the label and what our goals are - and really always have been.
I’m sure that most of you reading this probably found this label sometime around Halloween, and it was probably either through one of our annual Halloween mixes, or the Dark Lofi Hip Hop mix, both of which feature beats by Dated (me). Those mixes blowing up the way they did was a crazy surprise that I could never have anticipated, and it really was the spark that turned this label from a quiet place to post my own beats into the beginnings of the real label that I wanted it to someday become.
The dark lofi is near and dear to me, and will always form the core of what this label does. We aren’t, however, a dark lofi hip hop label, and never really were. I myself didn’t start out by making these dark beats, and it took years of experimentation before I even thought to attempt that sort of sound. Before that, I was just making chill/oldschool boom bap type beats, and just having fun playing with dusty old samples. I was sitting at a bus depot waiting for my ride home from work one day while I jotted ideas for a new tape down in a notepad when I came up with the idea for The Weather Channel, and all the dark lofi hip hop that I’ve become known for since then has all stemmed from that moment.
Around that time however, we were still putting out other regular lofi beats, both in my own random side-beats, as well as the beats of Wayvee Tapes, who collaborated with me on the Half-Baked Beats tape. The dark lofi was one new direction of what I hoped would eventually become a wide-spanning range of different sounds as we found more talent for the label.
Fast forward to now, and you’ll find lofi hip hop, dark lofi hip hop, synthwave, experimental/industrial, darkjazz, trip hop, plunderphonics, and we have plans to branch out still to lofi house, synth house, and plenty more. With all of these different genres being released, what they have in common that makes them relevant to this label might not be immediately apparent.
If I had to describe our music on a really short tagline, I would probably just describe it as lofi and retro music. That pretty much covers all the hip hop and retrowave stuff, but it doesn’t really describe the core “essence” of what makes a release fit in here. our tagline often throws around the term “internet music” in a sort of tongue-in-cheek way, but it is probably one of the more accurate descriptors. What genres like lofi, retro, experimental, trip hop, dark jazz, all sorts of electro, etc. have in common is that there are a lot of bedroom producers out there who are experimenting with the their genre, and who are more focused on doing something creative and honest than making the cleanest, over-produced radio music. What we primarily want to release is music by underground artists who love what they do, and who either bring something totally new to the label or compliment our established sounds well.
If you’re out there thinking “man, I have some cool music, but I don’t know if I should submit it”. the short answer is: yeah, submit it! The longer answer though, is does the music fit into a trend that is already proving popular on the label? If it does, we will almost certainly want you on board if the music is solid enough. For example, the dark lofi is easily our most popular genre on the label. I can almost guarantee that anyone who submits a really strong sounding dark-lofi project (not even hip hop, necessarily) is probably going to get signed, because the appetite for it is the largest. Fitting in isn’t the only way to get signed, however, as we also don’t want to paint ourselves into a corner. Our recent release by BROOK is super far outside of our most popular dark, brooding material, and that was one of the reasons it was appealing to me. it represented a range of emotions that have a place on this label, that work with the other material to provide something for everyone to listen to, no matter their mood. First and foremost however, that project just had a real soul to it, and some incredibly catchy tunes, which made it stand out immediately.
Going forward, we’re doubling-down on this mentality. You’ll see a lot more dark lofi material, but also a lot more music that spans other genres and moods. We’re also looking for ways to make this label more of a home for our artists than just a faceless Youtube page that spam-posts songs and tapes. as you may have noticed, we’ve just put out our first LOFI LIVE set, which will be the first of many. The plan is to put out sets by as many artists on the label as possible, complete with collabs and crossovers. We’ll also be looking into putting out more collabs between artists on the label. The eventual plan is to also start putting out more production-focused videos, either process vids or vlogs, or even tutorials on specific production techniques. The plan is to make this less of a song machine, and more of a bunch of cool folks that you want to keep up with and chill with while we share our art with this awesome community.
There are a ton of new things coming, so I hope you are already to come on this ride with us!
Have a question? Is there something you’d like to see us do? Drop a comment below! You can check out our first LOFI LIVE here: https://youtu.be/hN5EzrsI5Vg

Imagine that Dick and Jason liiiiiive to synchronize their Let’s Be Shits schedules just in time for any posh gala the Wayne children are expected to attend.
Some Douchebag is like “So, Richard. What is it you do, these days?”
And Dick just plasters on the most vacuous smile in existence, like the kind that could only be engineered in a lab by combining Brucie with a Colgate commercial for sparkling teeth, special effects included.
And he’s like, “Oh, I’m an instagram model and social influencer.”
And then Jason appears out of nowhere, swaying on his feet and throwing an arm around Dick’s shoulder as if to support himself, hiccuping a little and splashing some of his wine over the edge of his glass (its apple juice, of course).
“So am I,” he says, punctuating with another hiccup. “But only like. Ironically.”
Dick leans in towards the Douchebag as if to confide a secret, as the latter tries to lean away whilst still figuring out what expression his face wants to produce.
“He keeps saying that like it means something, but I’m not sure it does. I think he saw it on a youtube video and just started copying it. That’s not copyright infringement right? Bruce’ll probably be pissed if he has to pay out another lawsuit for copyright stuff after I just got in trouble for trying to sell tickets to my band’s show without getting permission to use all the songs we did. Like, how was I supposed to know you needed permission to sing songs? Isn’t this, like. America?”
The Douchebag starts stammering and attempting to edge gracefully away - hell, he’ll settle for not gracefully, he really was never even looking for an answer in the first place, just a soundbite he could reenact for his snobby friends later. This was more than he was actually prepared for.
Jason meanwhile surges forward and grabs a hold of Douchebag’s suited arm, acting like he still needs the support.
“Hey. It does so mean something, and I came up with it on my own, I didn’t steal shit. If I was going to steal stuff, I’d go for the silver, not words, how dumb do you think I am? He’s always doing this,” he complains to the Douchebag.
“Just because I didn’t start school until the sixth grade and had to bribe our little brother to take all my tests for me, he acts like I don’t even know what words mean. But he’s the one who only passed his senior year of high school by getting Playgirl to do a photoshoot of him when he turned eighteen just before finals, and then most of his teachers just made sure he passed so they wouldn’t feel pervy because they’d gone gaga over his photos and then he got held back a year and they had to see him every day and feel sketchy.”
Dick spreads his arms wide as if an extremely self-explanatory point has just been made.
“Hello? Is that, or is that not, a display of genius?”
“Really, I do have to be going, I think I see my old business partner waving at me from over there - “ the Douchebag says somewhat desperately.
“Dammit Jay, look what you did.” Dick wails dramatically. He even stomps a foot for good measure. Jason’s struggling not to laugh. “You’re embarrassing us in front of one of Bruce’s guests. Now he thinks we’re low class and its going to be all over the news and this is gonna be the last straw and Bruce’ll get fed up and say we can never go to these things again and its going to be all your fault and none of this would ever happen if you weren’t always like. Ugh. What’s the word.”
The Douchebag is hastily assuring them he doesn’t think they’re embarrassing or low class and he’s not going to tell anyone otherwise, while still trying to pry his jacket sleeve loose from Jason’s iron grip. Jason meanwhile appears oblivious to anything the Douchebag says or does, as he fixates on his brother and starts waving his own arms around dramatically....which sends Douchebag stumbling in the process, all without either brother seeming to notice.
“Well I’m sure I can’t help you, since I don’t know words so good,” Jason hisses equally dramatically. “I’m just a fucking dumbass from the Narrows, isn’t that right. I’m not some fancy circus boy like you were, all I had to practice reading on as a kid was my rap sheet.”
He moves to fling his arms over his head in exasperation, and tears the Douchebag’s suit sleeve with a resounding ripping noise in the process. Douchebag stares at the remains of the jacket that cost several thousand dollars that he doesn’t have, because he’s a pompous jackass who lives beyond his means in an attempt to fund his social ladder climbing expeditions.
“Now look what you did,” Dick cries, flinging his head back as if in total despair, the black locks of his hair flying from side to side in theatrical disarray. “Do you even know how much that poor man’s suit must have cost him? Probably more than my parents’ trailer, I’ll bet you that much.”
“Really, its quite alright,” the Douchebag tries to insist through clenched teeth. It wasn’t, in his eyes, not by a long shot, but he forced himself to remember that for whatever reasons, these two...peasants were still Bruce Wayne’s chosen wards....or well, worse yet...adopted sons. God, but that man’s abyssmal IQ was an absolute plague on Gotham’s high society. “It could have happened to anyone.”
“No, please, don’t try and cover for him, he’ll never learn that way. You must let us pay for the damage, Bruce will just take it out of his allowance, it’ll be fine,” Dick says, patting at the man’s arm feverishly as if he can smooth out the gaping hole left by the flap now hanging limply down the man’s sleeve.
“Oh, I’ll never learn? How about you, destroying Bruce’s grandmother’s antique china at the birthday party you tried to throw for Damian after Bruce specifically asked you not to try and play host anymore?” Jason gets in his brother’s face, liquid sloshing over the side of his erratically swinging glass and in the process splashing all over the back of the Douchebag’s neck.
“I was trying to actually do something nice for someone else, not that you’d know anything about that,” Dick hisses obnoxiously loudly. “How was I supposed to know you weren’t supposed to use steak knives to cut up food on china? Its not like plates come with instruction manuals!”
“Not like you’d know how to read them if they did!”
“Have you never heard of Youtube tutorials?”
“Have you never heard of shut the fuck up, you absolute dillhole?”
“Would both of you stop it? You’re causing a scene!” The two’s younger brother Timothy arrived on the scene, smoothly sliding between them and the ecstatically grateful Douchebag, who backpeddles out of the way at the first available opportunity. Tim throws him an apologetic glance, but the Douchebag barely notes it as he furiously makes for the side entrance as fast as he can, with the less people seeing his disheveled state the better.
So much for the networking he had planned on doing the rest of the night. He firmly vowed to steer far clear of the eldest two Wayne buffoons at all future events Brucie insisted on inflicting the oafs on the rest of them.
All of which of course means he completely missed the way the brothers’ dramatics hushed into heated whispers upon Tim’s arrival, or the high five Dick and Jason slipped each other discreetly.
“Let’s see Brucie top that,” Jason says smugly.
“Oh god. You’ve finally done it. You’ve turned a charity event into a war games scenario.”
“Oh please. All of that money goes straight into the board of directors’ pockets,” Dick says dismissively. “The only actual money being raised for charity tonight is from the jewelry Selina’s liberating from the guests. And Damian and Cass already called dibs on helping her with that, and Duke’s already doing the scorekeeping for when that inevitably turns into a competition, so we were bored. And left alone to our own devices. So really if anyone’s to blame its everyone but us.”
“Sides, this is a time honored tradition for us,” Jason adds with a smirk. “We call it guerilla class warfare. We’re sleeper agents for the working class, see.”
“You’re the reason the Valentinos never show up to any Wayne Enterprise hosted events anymore, aren’t you?” Tim realizes.
“Some of our best work,” Dick reminisces fondly. Their little brother sighs.
“Please at least tell me you never actually posed for Playgirl.”
Dick shrugs. “Oh, they offered, but even when Bruce and I were at our worst, its not like I ever actually wanted to give him a stroke.”
“Continuity error,” Jason points out smugly. “Total amateur move.”
Dick merely arches a brow. “Not when I can simply claim Bruce must have paid to cover it up for the sake of the family image, and was absolutely furious at my besmirching of the good Wayne family name. And wait a second, weren’t you the one who introduced that into the scene in the first place? I just yes and-ed according to the rules of improv, like the professional that I am.”
“Yeah, that doesn’t sound right,” Jason says, completely unperturbed. Not an ounce of perturbed in sight. He continues on smoothly. “And if Sir Douchely of Douchington actually digs a little deeper and yet can’t seem to find anyone who recalls ever actually seeing this oh so salacious spread?”
Dick’s shit remains unphased.
“I’ll simply flip the script and release the hounds aka Steph, Harper, Cullen and all three dozen of their twitter handles, wondering all over the Gotham social media highways just why someone of his standing is so intent on tracking down the homoerotic depravities of the eldest Wayne heir, given that despite his unjust leapfrogging up the social ladder, he is still ultimately a....commoner.”
“Ah yes,” Jason nods sagely. “And as all Gothamites know well, if you prick us, we doth not bleed blue. Just a terribly pedestrian red.”
“Oh the humanity,” Dick sighs. He joins his younger brother in nodding the slow, steady head-bob of the intellectually validated, their seeming rivalry melting into sibling synchronicity.
Tim eyes them and shakes his head side to side instead.
“You two disturb me.”
Jason shrugs. “Well, that does make sense. Don’t get me wrong, you’re our little brother and we’re terribly fond of you now, Timmers. But when the revolution comes, we will have to turn on you as well.”
“Fair is fair,” Dick hums in agreement. “We can’t play favorites. That’s how you get an upper class in the first place.”
“Yeah I don’t know what to do with this,” Tim sighs and heads off in search of Steph.
“Just FYI, your girlfriend’s Team Proletariat too. She’s got the T-shirt and everything,” Jason calls after him.
Tim swerves in mid-step and redirects himself towards Kate. At least their cousin slash-aunt-slash-nobody’s-bothered-to-parse-the-actual-relation-there could be counted on to be somewhat normal. Her idea of making a scene was to simply start a brawl, and Tim had overheard Bruce specifically elicit a promise from her earlier in the evening that she would throw no punches or kicks or headbutts or judo throws, nor any manner of actual or improvised weaponry.

Probably Should Have Seen That Coming
Some cryptic-centric Side shenanigans, featuring Youtuber Roman!
Roman paused in his trekking to fish a pebble from his boot. As stylish as his footwear was, tall and gleaming with shiny buckles, they probably weren’t the best choice for venturing into the forest. But his viewers expected style, as he presented in all his videos, so he happily put up with the occasional annoyance. He recommenced his walk through the trees and lifted his camera up to his shoulder to get a good view of the golden autumn-hued forest around him.
“Goooood morning my lovely viewers! As you can probably tell, today is no makeup tutorial! We’re leaving the mascara at home, because I recently got wind of an exciting new place to explore. That’s right – I’m going on another adventure!” He swung the camera around to wink at the audience. “Let’s see what we’ve got.”
Roman stepped over a low-lying log and centered the camera on his face before continuing brightly, “As you all know, I’m currently holidaying in this quaint little town, and a few days ago a couple local children told me about a spooky mansion through the forest. Apparently no one goes there, and there’s plenty of ghost stories to go around! I wonder if I’ll find any princely souvenirs.” Roman scanned the horizon ahead, but the regularity of trees and bushes continued on as far as he could see. “So I thought I’d take you all for a little look! I’m heading north-west as we speak, and I should be coming across something… now!”
Nothing ahead. Well, he could edit it. Roman hummed to himself as he traversed piles of orange leaf litter and damp, crumbling logs. The air out here smelled like damp wood and earth after the rain, and Roman inhaled great breaths of it. Maybe it was his romantic side talking, but the air always smelled sweeter out in the countryside. He should holiday more often. It would make for exciting content, too – his viewers deserved only the best.
The ground turned harder under his feet, and Roman paused. He scraped away bits of leaf litter with his boot and found instead of loose earth, the packed dirt of a once-travelled path. His breathing quickened with excitement as he followed the path, occasionally trailing off it and having to find it again, searching through decades old covering of vegetation. His eyes were fixed on the ground, so he didn’t notice the structure looming until he was close enough to see its broken windows, shards of glass hanging from swollen frames like teeth in a broken maw. Roman let out a squeal of excitement and lifted his camera to give a good view of the ancient, sagging mansion.
“There it is! The kids I spoke to called it the Sanders estate. Gosh, it really does look like a ghost house.”
The building sprawled in what had once been a large clearing, now overtaken by trees and bushes and vines that crawled up the walls of the massive mansion. Only a few of the stained-glass windows were still intact – most of the others had cracked or shattered. The huge double doors groaned slightly agape, but there was a heavy chain and lock preventing them from opening fully.
Roman stepped forward, admiring the majesty of what had once been a fabulous structure. Through the vegetation clinging to the low wall around it, he could see hints of patterns in the stone. The windows that remained were stained in all colours in kaleidoscopic patterns that must have painted an inside floor like a rainbow, when the sun was at the right angle. Now it lay empty and alone, silent as the grave and half-swallowed by the forest it resided in.
“Wow.” Roman breathed. “I was half expecting it to be a joke! Come on, let’s go check it out.”
Roman rushed up the path and through the rusted remains of wrought-iron gate that now sagged on their hinges. In this little area that could have been a garden, flowers sprouted from every nook and cranny and littered the area, some almost choked by the approaching forest. Roman spun in a slow circle to take it all in, before inspecting the heavy chains on the door.
“Locked, huh? This is positively ancient. I wonder…” Balancing his camera in one hand, Roman pulled out his Swiss army knife and scraped at the rotted wood around it. It was old and water-logged, and it crumbled apart to reveal – ugh, termites. He brushed away their squirming white bodies and kept patiently working at the door. No wonder it was frail.
After some time, the chains were loose enough for Roman to pull them out of the doors and let them groan open. Light flooded in around his silhouette to pool across a dusty wooden floor, an ancient but expensive-looking antique coat stand and a dim entryway further inside. Roman let out another happy squeal.
“Okay! We stand at the threshold of the unknown. Let’s go make it known!”
He stepped forward onto groaning floors. A glimmer of light caught his eye, and Roman glanced up to where a positively marvelous chandelier dangled overhead – it was dusty and unlit and absolutely covered in spider webs, but even so its delicate metal curves and cut crystals gleamed.
Even more exciting sights waited for Roman the further he explored, using his phone screen for light. He was lucky this camera had a night-vision setting or his viewers would be seeing dark blurs with Roman’s commentary. He passed through a drawing room, a sitting room with rotted couches and silver serving trays bearing dusty glasses – and excitingly, a grand piano resting on a slight stage. Who had played this instrument, decades ago? It was covered in a thick layer of dust now. Roman brushed off the seat before sitting and holding his hands over the keys. Was it still in tune?
He pressed down on a key, and heard nothing. Roman frowned and tried another one. This one made sound, the note reverberating through the old house like birdsong. This place had acoustics, all right. Lifting the top of the piano revealed that the inner workings were all in place, but were half gummed-up with spider web and rot.
“Do you guys wanna hear a song?” Roman questioned his camera. “The ambiance is one-of-a-kind. Hang of a sec, I just have to find something to clean out these cobwebs with. I’m certainly not risking my manicure.”
Hmm, the kitchen aught to contain some tools he could use. From his copious study (binging Downton Abbey) the kitchen was most likely to be downstairs. Roman passed a grand staircase on his little adventure – but there was plenty of time to explore that later. From somewhere behind him there was a jarring bang – the top of the old piano must have fallen down. He hoped nothing was broken. That would really spoil the mood.
Roman finally located the kitchen and began fishing around for a large stick maybe, something lean he could use to get rid of webs.
He found what he was looking for in the form of a mostly-preserved soup ladle hanging up on the wall, and had just grabbed it when he heard a creak from above.
Roman froze.
“Did you guys hear that?” Wait, his viewers couldn’t respond, they hadn’t even seen the video yet. Roman held his breath and listened hard, but the sound didn’t come again, and he let out a sight. “Old houses and their creaks. Okay, back to the piano.”
As Roman crossed the threshold out of the kitchen, a faint tickle touched the top of his head. He reached up and found dust sifting from above him. That was weird. He shrugged it off and hurried back to the sitting room with his prize in hand.
“Okay! Now, let’s make some music.” Roman bounced up to the stage – and that was odd, he could have sworn he’d heard the lid slam shut, but it was still up where he’d left it. Maybe the wind had knocked something else over. Roman placed his camera down on the seat and leaned over to start extracting cobwebs from around the delicate workings of the instrument. A few tiny black spiders scurried away as he worked. He would have thought that they’d scatter, but they crawled over each other in their haste to disappear over the lid of the piano, like a mass of ants with one mission. Roman hummed curiously. He didn’t know that spiders were herd-animals. More dust trickle down and he waved it away from his face as he finished clearing away webs.
“Finally!” Roman sat back on the seat and turned to grin at the camera. “This is a little original piece I’ve been working on.”
He brought his hands down on the keys with a blast of sound, and behind him there was a strangled screech and a thump.
Roman jolted out of his chair. On the opposite side of the room there was a mass, and as he watched it twisted and scrabbled back into the darkness.
“Who’s there?” Roman’s voice crackled with panic. He grabbed his phone and turned its light on the shape, which let out a hiss. There were legs, too many legs, and as Roman stared those legs dug into the wall and the creature blurred up with the clicking of armoured limbs on wood. Roman tried to follow it with his light but it was so fast, scampering across the roof like a demented insect. Roman grabbed his camera and bolted.
He shot from the sitting room and collided with a figure – one that was large and solid and furry, and let out a yowl as Roman slammed into it. He screamed and jolted away, only to trip and hit the floor, camera and phone skittering across the ground. The shape loomed above him – Roman could see glints of teeth, black claws, flattened ears and piercing blue eyes through the darkness. It leaned down towards him and Roman screeched and kicked out wildly, catching something soft. There was a pained yelp. Roman scrambled to his feet and bolted the other way. There was another exit from the sitting room, right? To the kitchen area. Roman gasped for breath as he tore a hallway, rebounding off the wall in his haste to turn a corner. Hissing sounded behind him.
Run. Run. Where was his camera? It didn’t matter, just run. Roman skidded into another room. In the dark, the furniture was too indistinct to identify. Where was the exit?
He recognised this area. Roman ran down a hallway – nope, wrong way – the other one, bolted through a sticky cloud of spider webs and finally, finally, there was the entrance way with its gleaming crystal chandelier and light spilling in through the door. Roman ran for it.
His feet hit dirt and he stumbled out into the blinding Autumn sunlight, wheezing for breath. The mansion behind him was eerily silent. But whatever it was that lived there was right there. Roman bit down on a sob and hurried down the path, back towards town. Where was the town anyway? South-east? His phone had acted as his compass.
Just as Roman was frantically trying to remember his navigational skills, there was a booming from above him. He lurched back with a shriek as a thing dropped down in front of him with a thud and the sweep of wings – big black wings, like fucking MOTHMAN. Roman didn’t see any more, because the world spun around him and, like the Disney princesses he idolized, he fainted dead away.
    “-do with him?”
“We certainly can’t allow him to leave. He has seen us.”
“Come on, Lo. Maybe he’ll think it was a dream?”
“The recorded proof would beg to differ.”
“Oh, right. Did you see where it went? Maybe we can delete the footage.”
“I have it.” A third, gravelly voice mumbled. “Ugh, why did he have to come here? Or play that damn thing so loud?”
“You were startled, Virge. It’s not your fault he saw you.” The higher voice soothed. “Does anyone know how to work one of these recording devices?”
There was a long silence.
“I might try it.” The stiff voice said. There was some clicking and shuffling, a flap of sails or wings. The voice hummed in thought. “They have certainly developed these things. The last time I saw one, it was much larger. I wonder how they have compacted the design like this. I would like to keep this specimen for examination.”
“He’ll be looking for it.” The gravelly voice groaned. “We have to give it back – after we delete the footage, anyway.”
Roman yawned.
There was a startled skittering around him, which made him frown. His bed was cold, and dusty – why was he lying on top of the sheets, anyway? He felt around for his pillow and found a very large, ornate, and unfamiliar bedhead. This wasn’t his room. Which meant the voices weren’t his podcast.
Roman bolted upright. There was a hiss, a clatter and a crunch underfoot. He looked around frantically in the dim light – he was in what looked like an old bedroom, flopped on a four-poster bed with three indistinct shapes gathered around him, twitching and flinching back now that he was awake. His heart hammered in his chest.
“Well, that’s one way to do it.” The higher voice said. And now that Roman’s eyes were open, he could see the person it belonged to. A – not quite a person, wearing overalls with gleaming fangs and canine ears pricked in curiosity, eyes gleaming an inhuman blue. He lifted clawed hands in a placating gesture. “Okay, so-”
Roman screamed.
The other two figures – one tall and pale with huge black eyes and massive wings folded against his back, the other hunched over with way too many limbs twitching around him – jumped at the shriek. For the wolf-man’s credit, he didn’t appear startled. His ears lowered non-threateningly.
“Are you finished?”
Roman wanted to petulantly say ‘no’. But that probably wouldn’t get him anywhere, so he nodded quickly instead. The fanged monster beamed.
“Great! Sorry to startle you, kiddo. You can call me Patton.”
“What are you doing?” The spidery-creature hissed. “Don’t introduce yourself!”
“Well he looks scared!” Patton protested.
“Good!”
They continued to bicker, as Roman looked between them like a rather terrified tennis observer. The third creature cleared its throat with a flutter of wings – less like moth wings, he could see now, but thickly feathered, like those of a bird. An owl? His eyes were very large and very black as they observed Roman. He cleared his throat.
“Greetings. Since we are doing introductions, you may call me Logan.”
Roman let out a little frightened whine. The third creature – smaller than the other two, with dripping mandibles and a cluster of gleaming eyes and far too many spider-like legs, groaned.
“Ugh, whatever. I’m Virgil.”
“And you are?” Patton prompted. Roman curled up with his knees to his chest, dimly wondering if he was tripping. There were mushrooms in the forest, right? Could you get high without eating them? Maybe by breathing in enough spores? This place was mildewy enough for him to have breathed in lots of spores.
“Err – Roman.”
Patton grinned at him with very sharp teeth. “It’s nice to meet you, Roman.”
“I… wish I could say the same, but I must admit I’m… very confused.” Roman managed. Patton nodded sympathetically.
“You must be. I bet it’s strange waking up in a new place surrounded by strangers.”
“It is.” Roman agreed. The spider – Virgil – grumbled.
“Strange? It’s our house.”
At Roman’s stare, Logan elaborated, “We live in this mansion. You unknowingly trespassed in our home.”
“Oh. Sorry.” Roman said faintly. “I’ll just be on my way then. Did any of you gentlemen happened to see where I dropped my things?”
Logan glanced down at his feet, where a camera sat crumpled with a foot-shaped dent in the middle. Roman’s mouth dropped open.
“You startled me.” Logan defended, before turning. “Virgil, you found the recorder. Did you see the light source as well?”
“Um, I think so.” Virgil muttered. He backed away from the bed before turning to scurry away. Roman squeaked as all those limbs disappeared around the doorway.
“So, about that leaving.” Patton winced, and Roman began to have a very bad feeling. Patton’s eyes flung open wide. “Oh, it’s okay, no need for that face! You can go. I just need you to make a promise, first.”
“A promise?” Roman echoed. Patton nodded while Logan watched passively.
“Yeah. I need you to promise to not tell anyone about us. You can kind of see why we’re a big secret, right?”
Roman nodded frantically. “Yes, I won’t tell anyone. Not a soul. My lips are sealed.” To demonstrate, he pretended to zip up his lips and Patton’s ears lowered in confusion. Okay, maybe cool it with the gestures around a wolfman. “Your secret is safe with me.”
With a series of clicks, Virgil slunk back into the room, something clasped in his hands. Roman swung his legs over the side of the bed, and just managed to catch his phone as Virgil tossed it at him.
“Light’s off. I think it’s broken.” The monster mumbled. It didn’t look broken – at least, the screen wasn’t cracked. Roman frowned and clicked the on button, and the screen lit up. All three creatures jumped. That in turn made him jump.
“Er, no, not broken.” Roman said warily.
“How does it work?” Logan leaned in with a fascinated stare.
“I press the button?” Roman demonstrated, turning the screen off and on again. Logan looked mesmerized. “It’s my phone.”
“I thought phones were bigger.” Patton lifted his hands to demonstrate. “They’re connected to wires, and you can talk to people through them.”
“Well, yeah, old ones.” Roman felt like he was in a dream. “With the new ones you can still talk to people. And play games and stuff. Listen to music…”
“All of that from one tiny box?” Logan breathed. “If you have time, I would love to learn more about it. It has been… some time, since I ventured into the outside world.”
Well, this might as well happen. Roman unlocked his phone and scrolled between pages, showing Logan the clusters of apps. “So these are all the applications. They do different things.”
“Oh!” Patton jumped up with an excited yelp that made Roman jump. “I’ll get our guest something to eat. Oh this is so exciting.” He darted off as Roman began explaining touchscreens, and then Wi-Fi. After a few more questions, Roman found himself stumped.
“Uh – okay. How about I come back tomorrow with a PowerPoint?”
“I do not know what this ‘power point’ is, but I am intrigued.” Logan admitted. “Please do. It is wonderful to learn more of the outside world. Before you go, will you please show me what these ‘applications’ do? What is this colourful one?”
“Oh, it’s Candy Crush.”
Roman spent more time in that mansion than he would care to admit. After some scares with suddenly-blaring music that made Virgil cling to the ceiling, and almost an hour of playing with the voice-recorder app and Patton making all kinds of sounds Roman didn’t know he could make, he found he was almost… having fun. Like, yeah, everything was weird and kinda fucked-up, but if Roman was anything, he was adaptable. And brave. Handsome, too, and dashing, princely…
He was almost reluctant to go home. As he hesitated at the door Patton grinned at him, and Virgil sighed.
“Look, we’ll still be here tomorrow, flesh-mortal. Scram.”
“Come back soon!” Patton added brightly.
So Roman left.
He spent most of his evening doing research and putting together a power point – and then decided that if he was going to do this, he should do it right, and bought a huge bag of snack foods that those poor unfortunate souls hadn’t had the chance of tasting before. He dutifully kept his promise to keep the secret, but when he tried writing down the day’s events in his diary – his hand wouldn’t move. He tried to remember the names but they hovered just out of his grasp. Only when he gave up trying to write it did everything come back to him.
So, no talking or writing about it. That was probably for the best, to keep his strange new friends safe. Roman was already planning to extend his holiday. He wondered if Logan would be open to setting up an email account. Roman was just dying to introduce them to instagram.

A love letter to Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number
or how I learned to stop worrying and love the game.
Hotline Miami 2 turned 3 yesterday, I thought I’d write something up for it!
The following contains spoilers for both Hotline Miami and Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. I'm going to put it under a read more seeing as I got carried away.
Tumblr media
I didn't get to play the game on its release date, I was busy with real life. My sister was playing a part in her university theatre troupe and had a role as Miss Prism in The Importance of Being Earnest, it coincided with the date of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number's release and I was going to go back to the house me and my family were staying in at the time. It was a moment of respite during a time of year where I was working on my final art presentation for my school and I had worked non stop on it. I wanted to play the game since its announcement and having finished the first Hotline Miami less than a year before, I had waited so long, I could wait a day longer, my time was my own to work with. The comics by Dayjob Studio had gotten me really excited for the game at the time as well, more than happy to see my favorite medium put to use in promoting a game I was looking forward to.
I got back to my student flat in the early afternoon and made myself lunch, downloaded the game (updates and bug fixes included) and happily started it up. I'm ashamed to say now that I was expecting most of what the first few levels had to offer, since I'd spoiled myself on a leak that came out a few months before the official release of the game. I originally wasn't going to watch it, but a friend who'd watched before me said there was a character with my name in it, seeing as that was so rare to me, I caved in really fast. (Fun fact: it was the direct inspiration for one of the first comics I did for that game)
I have to point out that I'm thankful that the game's slasher style tutorial wasn't spoiled in the leaked gameplay footage, as it was a genuine joy to see the amount of details in the level design at my own pace. There was a big buzz around that level when journalists were framing it as an unwanted shocking sexual assault scene in a game about senseless violence and cartoonish gore. The game's meta commentary about sequels and how that kind of scene is used in horror movies for upping the shock value was lost on me too, but we can't be expected to get the point of a moment in media the first time. The presentation in most cases for this is frankly overblown and lasts around 3 seconds, a pair of pixellated buttcheeks over a woman I didn't even know the name of yet wasn't going to put me in a catatonic state, but a trigger warning  asking a player if they want to be spared from that kind of scene before the start of the game is always a worthy inclusion.
Even today the first 5 levels of Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number are the perfect representation of the rest of the game: big sprawling detailed areas, a diversity in those locations, playstyles associated with named characters, and an actual commentary on violent video game protagonists.
Tumblr media
As mentioned before, I was very much looking forward to the game's release and getting around to playing it. I had gone cold turkey on playing the previous installment, wishing to discover the gameplay anew and making my patience feel like a reward when I got around to playing it.
I wrote “named characters” because giving them a name makes them more real, part of the world, with motivations unique to them. Not just an avatar the player can slip into and mirror back what the little amount of pixels with a human shape might be beginning to feel when committing violent acts. That also means there are more stories that come bundled together, they're more present than ever and harder to ignore for a player who wants to skip to the next action set. The arcade game format of the first game alongside its simplicity is lost, but more story is what I wanted in the sequel, so I can't complain.
Playstyles and characters were a joy to discover and experiment with these characters comprise of:
The Fans, covered in colourful war paint with their individual animal masks and expertise, all set out to go on a vigilante murder spree, chainsaws and guns in hand.
Manny Pardo, the detective whose motives remain unclear, with a more gun oriented gameplay.
Evan Wright, the writer with the one with the most unusual playstyle of the lot, seeing as he tries to do non-lethal takedowns of people he chooses himself to be around needlessly putting him and his family in danger in pursuit of the truth behind the first game's phone calls. This unique gameplay can be made into the default one by going too far on ground executions, making him go into a blind rage and seeing red.
The Soldier, limited to a single gun of your choosing whose ammunition must be replenished through carefully placed boxes throughout the level and an army knife for close range combat.
The Mafia, comprising of the Son of the former leader of the Russian mafia and his Henchman. The former wanting to reinstate the dominance of the Russian mafia after the Colombian cartel took over and the latter wishing to break free of this cycle. The Son has the same array of skills as the Fans, exception made of the chainsaw and gun combo, making him a reckless one man army, and a cool parallel between the Russian mafia and the vigilantes in animal masks.
And the last playstyle, what feels like the default way to play the game, is the one found in the first game. Simultaneously not making you feel contrived to play a certain way, but not making you feel overpowered either. It's shared between a handful of characters in the game: the Henchman , the Rat, the Pig Butcher, and the Snake. (although the latter is able to play in a fists only way with one of his masks)
Guns only, dodge rolling, fists only, a chainsaw and gun at the same time, double MP5s, and even non-lethal gameplay help to define everybody really well, beyond words and appearances.
Getting to explore levels that are massive and open was the biggest game changer, being tunnel visioned and sticking to melee weapons became a death sentence for some levels with frustration quickly rising. I remember reading the advice that guns made too much noise in Hotline Miami, the result was sticking to a melee weapon and executing fallen enemies; which rewarded you with more immediate points than firing with the different array of guns, but rising combo counters and being wary of cover definitely became the name of the game in the sequel, for better or worse.
Gone were the collection of small colourful appartement buildings, what felt like cardboard boxes with “Miami, Florida” scrawled in felt tip pen on them; instead we have unique looking buildings, that feel inhabited, grubby at times, and more unwelcome than ever for a gunfight. More windows, and getting shot from offscreen, and enemies for which you have to use a specific kind of weapons on to progress through the level, all at the same time.
Multitasking is asked from the player, being aware of the enemies in your surroundings along with the abilities and limitations of the character you are playing. Not to mention hard mode which you unlock after finishing the game for the first time, with more reaction time and ammunition conservation playing a bigger role by then. Hotline Miami's puzzle side could expand to its full potential and the developers have truly made a better game. More thought, more gameplay, more amazing music tracks from a variety of indie musicians, and more story was put into Wrong Number, it was everything I was hoping for and I wasn't disappointed by the game at all... At first.
Tumblr media
This isn't going to relate to a few people, but I try to finish games as fast as I can. Not speedrun them mind you, I like playing games too much for that, but finish it from beginning to end in a timely fashion. In the past, my interest dropped very fast for games that require time, knowledge of all its controls, or reflexes to beat and will get frustrated if I can't get back into the groove of it after a few months of not playing it. I tend to start over because I've either lost track of the story or of the rhythm of later chapters. On top of that, I didn't want to be spoiled accidentally or put it off too long. I remember finishing Hotline Miami's main story in one sitting only coming back the next day to finish the Biker levels, why not do it with Wrong Number?
To this day, I regret playing Hotline Miami 2 in one sitting. After 3 hours without a break, I had a slight headache, by the time I had finished the game 6 hours later, I had a migraine. By playing it the way I had, I'd successfully completed the game, but gotten a feeling of disgust by the end of it. I've had hangovers that felt better.
On a side note, that day I got a call from a classmate who wanted my opinion on the direction of his end of the year comic presentation was going. He came round when I was in the middle of Deathwish, on the level with Corey, what felt like the ultimate test of skill at the time. And I definitely gave vibes that I wanted to get back into the action, despite taking the time to answer questions and discuss his comic project (if you're reading this Jean, I'm really sorry, come round for tea sometime!). Time feels very fuzzy for this, as I seem to remember spending too much time on that stage, listening to the track Roller Mobster by Carpenter Brut over and over and slowly growing to resent it. I've gotten better since then and like the song just fine now, but I still have trouble with that level.
The assault on the Russian Mafia's headquarter by the Fans is a 4 floor action packed romp, where they all have their own floor for themselves and aim to meet each other on the roof of the building. Things don't go as planned for reasons that weren't explained immediately. Only after Deathwish do we realise that the Fans we had played as had fallen in battle one by one and died during their siege as we were playing the next floor. Now, characters whose gameplay were unique at that point got killed offscreen, with one onscreen by the police, rightfully so as they had only themselves to blame for their demise. I felt drained by the time I had come to what I thought was the end of the game. It turned out that it was the midpoint of the whole story. A pit in my stomach was slowly forming: there was going to be more after all this?
More of everything is both a blessing and a curse, more music leaves room for tracks I'll have a hard time liking, more violence means I'll slowly be apathetic to the character's struggles, and more characters is forgetting the levels that features only one of them, wondering why they were even there in the first place and if they could have been cut in favour of a smaller cast with their unique gameplay. Excitement had passed and doubt had settled in: character driven stories are what I love most of all and the cast was slowly thinning down. Those who had died weren't seen again in the story, was it going to keep my interest? I certainly expected it to.
Tumblr media
I finally took a break to have dinner and a stretch before coming back to continue Casualties, the final level featuring the Soldier. The stages between that one and Deathwish are wonderful, great even, but they felt as thought they don't fit into the main story, I remember later trying to rearrange all the levels, keeping in mind which levels concluded each chapters and found that everything fitted really well together as it did. I was still getting over the previous levels so maybe I wasn't enjoying them as much as I should at the time.
I'm going to be honest when I say I forget the Soldier is in the game every time. An actual wartime setting, in an alien looking Hawaii none the less, with a gameplay that's really enjoyable and prepared me for hard mode's ammunition conservation gameplay very well should be memorable. It may be due to the fact that his inclusion was to give a background to the protagonist of Hotline Miami and give the origins of the secret organisation behind the phone calls of the first game, with parallels to mission euphemisms over walkie talkies, commando style hits, and sense of loss to a cycle of violence that doesn't care for its victims or its players. The character's final moments didn't bite as hard this time, even though that one felt the most undeserved out of the whole cast.
The next four levels featuring Richter the Rat are some of the best I've experienced, by that point we were focusing on a new character we'd met in the previous game and of which I didn't think much of at the time. Seeing him was an unexpected surprise for me, a really good one because of all its touching cutscenes and tight levels. Even in his last chapter, with the track Le Perv by Carpenter Brut, reminiscent of Deathwish's nauseating track, was honestly a joy to play through, despite the difficulty. It also was a nice conclusion for the Writer's story, who instigates the Rat's recollection of the events, with a final choice between continuing the book about the vigilante group and its mysterious phone calls or reconnecting with his estranged family while there is still time and discontinuing the cycle of violence, neither choice affects the outcome of the finale, but there is definitely an obvious conclusion in there, for me at least.
Tumblr media
Nowadays, I know all the elements and numerous characters were included in Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number so that everything would be done in one game. Everything Dennaton wanted to experiment with, characters that tied different storylines together and both made sense of the first game and concluded its story for good. Hotline Miami didn't have room for flamethrowers or more storylines with other operators, it was an overarching story for the player, to be in the shoes of a hitman in an animal mask, with room to interpret the story for ourselves. The sequel doesn't stand on its own from a narrative sense: I'd be utterly confused by some of the stories of Hotline Miami 2 if I hadn't played the first game, since everything stems from the events of Hotline Miami. The result is that it all feels very heavy to take in all at once.
I really didn't care for Jacket's background, or why he did anything in the first game. He doesn't have a name, or a voice, or a personality, he's really boring in a story sense, but he's the perfect game protagonist. If he can be anything you want him to be, there's no room to dislike him, aside for his violent actions which he doesn't justify to himself in any way, he just does as he is told, like the soldier he once was. We feel what he feels during the violent missions, the sense that we get better and better at the game, the character doesn't improve, as there's no character to improve, we as the player are improving level by level.
So when the sequel explained that he was a veteran that fought in a war we never get the context for or care about, my first thought was that “he was just Rambo”. I hadn't watched Rambo at the time and only ever saw that character in old Atari games where you kill nameless soldiers. He'd always seemed like the generic action movie soldier that looks cool shooting away at his enemies. But since then, I've sat down to watch the first Rambo and saw the tale about young man coming back from war without education, aside from how to kill, back to a country that doesn't need him, and even despises him. It's an incredibly sad thing to watch a character broken by committing and being the victim of violence only to be rejected by the society they served.
The personal interpretations about Jacket is one of the best parts of Hotline Miami, as much as its gameplay, graphics, and music. Wrong Number builds upon that foundation by taking multiple interpretations of what Jacket could be and extends it to the cast of the sequel: he could be a jingoist with a burning hate for Russians (Jake the Snake) just as much as he could be scared for his life and willing to protect a person he loves (Richter the Rat). He's the now unwanted soldier of a war that is long lost (the Fans) just as much as he is the patriot in service of a minority struggling for his rightful place in a hostile environment (the Son). He's also a serial killer in an animal mask (the Pig Butcher) just as much as he is a killer with his own motives that don't have to be revealed to the player (Manny Pardo the Detective). And Biker’s search for answers is mirrored by the Writer, it was only fate that they would eventually meet up.
Tumblr media
After the levels with Richter, we have the final 5 levels featuring another one of my favourite characters: the Son. He's the de facto leader of the Russian mafia, a scarred one man army with what feels like the strongest desire of the cast of characters: taking back Miami from the Colombian cartel, the new organised crime network in charge. His Father, the final antagonist of Hotline Miami, felt like a strong businessman with the plan of gaining power over the city through assimilation: striking a deal between the Colombians and their cocaine distribution, owning methadone clinics for the new addicts to heroin and cocaine, and gaining the favour of local politicians. The Son is nothing like that. He has a more aggressive show of power and control, separating himself from organically made drugs in favor for more potent artificial ones produced locally and actively killing his competition through violence, being in a revolution similar to the masked vigilantes in an attempt to undo the damage caused by Jacket in the first game.
As an aside, Manny Pardo has his final level in the middle, throughout the game we are teased with his personal investigation, the one of a serial killer called the Miami Mutilator, separate from the main plot of the game. It all comes to a head in his last level when it's revealed that he is the one behind the murders of the Mutilator, in an attempt to overshadow the media's attention of the masked vigilantes. The interpretation I developed over time was that his story arc was a meta commentary on sequels having their own story and an inevitable lack of interest from fans of the first game, curious instead about a continuation of the first game's narrative.
I remember originally thinking from the game's trailer that Manny Pardo was Jacket and getting really curious about how the story was going to go about, until I realised that he was in fact another character with his own motives and losing interest almost immediately in favour of the Fans revealed alongside him in the video. When it emerged that he was a detective, it seemed immediately more interesting than Jacket ever was, that it would be a character in search of answers, similar to the likes of Biker from the first game. The expectation was subverted, as it turns out that he has more current things to worry about and masked vigilantes are a thing of the past, crime doesn't stop happening and random violence is the norm in the world of Hotline Miami.
After the Detective's final level, we have what has to be one of the hardest challenges of the game: the final showdown between the Son and the Colombian cartel's Boss in his sprawling villa. Even after having been playing the game for almost 8 continuous hours, it really felt like what the game was leading us up to, from random street thugs to the drug army in Miami. And yet, even when the level was all said and done, there was yet another level after that. We are back to what felt like the finale a few hours ago: Deathwish, only this time it's the Son's side of the story, overdosing on his own artificial drugs and going on a overcoloured haze of hallucinatory violence.
Apocalypse is the name of that level, and it's a beautiful boss rush, where all the Fans are turned into monstrous animal shaped fever dreams that the Son has set himself out to destroy in his terrible drug trip, alongside his own men, turned into unrecognisable demons. It all leads to the rooftop, where a rainbow bridge invites us off into the void as the game's credits show up on the screen. The credits fade in favour of the rest of the cast, alive and unperturbed by the finale we as the player went through, only to realise that events offscreen trigger the end of the world, nuclear bombs vaporise them all and...
I didn't get it.
Tumblr media
It took a good night's sleep and a bit of thinking to understand what Hotline Miami 2:Wrong Number was about: deconstructing Hotline Miami. The first game's conclusion had a hopeful tone to it, with mocking comments by the developer's stand-ins if we came back looking for more answers by playing Biker's additional levels, with actual answers that feel forced if you actually manage to find all the clues within the game. The sequel ends the world with nuclear clouds and if we start a new game, we get a new introduction at the start of the game essentially asking: “why are you back?”. There were no more answers the game could provide.
Violence is at the core of both of the games and it never seemed to stop. Hotline Miami left us wanting more, Hotline Miami 2 left us with the most violent thing known to humanity. I remember thinking that it was a deus ex machina ending, an answer to problems that seemed unsolvable. But inside the game there’s all this rising tension, focusing so much on the characters distracted me from the fact that it was culminating towards the end of the world. All the characters were trying to solve all their problems through violence, but the world wasn't going to get better through those methods. It was the only conclusion a game like that could have and I love it more than ever.
I cannot thank Dennaton enough for the incredible time I had and keep coming back to with Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number. It has made me explore media I never would have discovered otherwise and draw things I never imagined I would come to draw. Happy 3rd anniversary to an incredible game, and I look forward to the future.

University - Learning Maya -  Learning to animate a character in Maya
For the past two weeks we have been learning how to animate within Maya, as well as continuing our E4 projects. Since I decided to try and make my E4 sting in Maya to begin with, this side project would prove especially useful for me going on forward with the E4 project.
We were given two characters from my tutor, one from his short film “The Ticket Maker” and a character he created, appropriately titled “Eyeborg”. With both of these characters downloaded and ready to go I began each piece of animated work.
Ticket Maker - Jumping animation/ Learning the Software
I began with the jumping animation with the Ticket Maker robot, before beginning to animate. I tried to make myself familiar with the model itself, as our tutor was pointing out cool features the model had, such as its arms extending out from flaps on its side. It was this exploration that I gained a better understanding as to how important it is to construct a character, it’s not just about making a character look the way you want, its how they move/ function which is crucial in the animation stages of development, for example having the wheels rotate whenever the character moves forward or backwards to save time on animation.
Tumblr media
I also came to learn that animating in Maya, when compared to using software like Toon Boom or stop motion animation, is very different in its structure. Whereas so far, we have been animating frame by frame and making adjustments along the way, Animating in Maya focuses primarily on creating pegs, each part of the model’s Skelton must work in coordination with one another, so you can image I was surprised the whole model moved, when I was adjusting the body on it’s Y axis (Whereas previously we had to move each object we were animating on at a time).
Tumblr media
After fully adjusting to these changes I began working on the model animation and understanding the timeline. I find it slightly strange that in the timeline you can see frames such as frame number -10, but I’m sure along the way I will find out why such a frame exists. The key thing I had to remember when working in the timeline was to remember to press keys such as S when I had finished adjusting the model and to check all body parts are inline with each in the timeline. Once everything was animated, I tried to smoothen it/ fine tune it the best I could, this is when I learned about the Graph editor. I realised that a lot of my Peg lines where straight and diagonal and needed to be curved, I dragged the Graph editor above my timeline and tweaked the Peg paths to a point where I was happy with how they looked in action.
Tumblr media
As for animating the model itself, the concept of moving the model up then down at vary speeds to create the look of jumping was interesting, it was wondering what else could be added was the interesting part. At the same time, I didn’t want to jump the gun and give myself too many problems, so I tried to keep it simple. When the Ticket maker gets ready to jump, it bends down slightly covering its wheels, it’s head and eye also rotates downwards, to give the impression of it bending down. When it jumps, I tried to extended its wheels and legs down to give it a springy feeling as it jumps up, as well as rotating the head and eye backwards (upwards) to emphasize its take off. I also nudged the legs and wheels forward slightly to give a small sense of other movement aside from it being only straight up (I thought it made the character feel a little less static). When it lands, it bends forward as well as the head and eye, before returning to its starting position. It’s a minor tweak, but when the robot first makes contact with the ground and its head rolls forward, I had the eye come slightly forward outwards, as if the impact with the ground caused it to come loose, it sticks out until it rolls it’s head back up straight where the eye slots back into place.
Tumblr media
A final additional feature I added was the robot’s arm flaps opening and closing as it jumps up and down, as if the gravity of the jump is causing them to open and close slightly. Overall, I felt happy with his as a first piece of Maya animation and came away learning a lot
Tumblr media
Eyeborg - Walk cycle Animation
After finishing the jumping animation, it was then time to move onto the Eyeborg walk cycle animation. Before starting this project, I ran into an error, which is very evident when you see the images between the Ticket Maker robot and the Eyeborg, there isn’t any colour. Maya had an update causing the provided files colour and textures to not function correctly, so we had to download an add on for a software called Arnold. After downloading it and placing it within the Maya folder, the add on hasn’t fixed the issue. After informing my tutor of this (after completing the Eyeborg) he reassured me that the no textures should affect my grade too much as long as I was able to animate the model.
Tumblr media
When starting the Eyeborg animation, I decided to take aspects of the character into consideration first and for most. from what i could tell, he wasn’t human so characteristics may not be natural, his clothing looks metal and heavy possibly causing a lot of weight in the body affecting its movement. Lastly the leg holes in his costume look small, so when animating the legs, I had to be careful not to cause the legs to phase through them.
Tumblr media
(This is a screenshot of the tutorial video of the Eyeborg, which I used for reference when planning)
With all this in mind, I began animating, I started with the legs, which I felt I should keep basic as this was my first walk cycle and had them move in an arc motion. The arms I felt would be the key to presenting characteristics of the character. Focusing on the feeling of weight and alien-esc aspects of the character I decided to give him both a fast and wide range for his arm movements. I made the left arm moving in a wide fast arc, to give the sense of the body twisting and power needing to be used to move forward. the right arm was kept to a more traditional fast up and down movement to represent him quickly trying to keep balance after the left arm swing as his suit would cause him to fall over.
Tumblr media
Body twisting was added to give greater emphasis on these movements, giving a more irregular look to them. Before adding these two different arm movement types, I thought the Eyeborg look like it was dancing whilst it walked which didn’t seem to fit for me, which was another key reason the arms were created this way. I also played around with hands and fingers a bit too making them relaxed and open on the pull back, then clenched into a fist on the swing to again emphasize the struggle of him walking extruding his body arms forward (think of it as if it looks like he was trudging trough mud). Final additional tweaks where made to the legs in the graph editor to ensure the legs weren’t phasing through the legs holes and smoothening the arm movements.
Tumblr media
Overall this was a little tougher, probably due to me trying to add a little bit of character to the walk cycle, but overall, I again feel like I have learned a lot from this walk cycle work, this work in particular will be a crucial learning experience to help me with my E4 Project.

If possibly following a diet based on calorie restriction you might miss dinner to count the correct calories nevertheless, you would not replace that missed meal with additional calories in the larger "break fast" as an example. So you might think you are going to do the exact same thing but 1 you would eventually be working with your body to trigger weight-loss and inside of other you'd be fighting against your body and it's natural hunger to produce weight bereavement. Description
Just Updated for 2020! Become a Fullstack Web Developer in 2020 by learning the most in-demand skills! This is one of the fastest-growing courses on Udemy with 10,000+ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️in the last 6 months. Graduates of this course are now working at companies like Google, Tesla, Amazon, Apple, JP Morgan, Facebook + other top tech companies (...seriously). Join a live online community of over 200,000+ developers and a course taught by an industry expert that has actually worked both in Silicon Valley and Toronto as a Senior Developer and Tech Lead. This is the tutorial you've been looking for to become a modern web developer in 2020. It doesn’t just cover a small portion of the industry. This covers everything you need to know to get hired: from absolute zero knowledge to being able to put things on your resume that will allow you to live the life you want.  Sounds too good to be true? Give me 5 minutes of your time to explain why I built this Web Development course and what is different here than thousands of other courses all over the internet:
I update the course every month to make sure you learn the most up to date skills! There is no wasted time here. We won’t be using outdated technologies like PHP, Wordpress, and JQuery. Although still useful, outdated technologies like the above are low paying and demands for them are decreasing. In this course, you will learn the specific technologies that are the most in-demand in the industry right now. These include tools and technologies used by the biggest tech companies like Google, Facebook, Instagram, etc… It’s geared specifically for people that want to learn employable skills in 2020.
After finishing this course, you will be able to apply for developer roles, get a promotion, or upgrade your job title as a developer and earn a higher salary. We won't be taking any shortcuts in this course. You are going to go from absolute zero: where you learn how the internet works. To mastery: where you build an image recognition app using a Machine Learning API (a subset of Artificial Intelligence) and all the other modern technologies that we learn in the course. Most students have commented on how the projects in this course have impressed their interviewers and allowed them to get an offer.
This course is taught by an instructor who has worked in Silicon Valley, and one of the top tech companies in Toronto. I have built large scale applications, and have managed teams of developers. I am not an online marketer or a salesman, but a software developer who has worked directly with these technologies.  I love programming and believe that there needs to be a course out there that actually teaches valuable real-life skills (because most of them are taught by teachers with no work experience).
Your time is valuable and you don't want to spend thousands of dollars on a Bootcamp. You want a course that outlines the best way to become a Web Developer, in simple and well-explained terms, so that you fully understand topics instead of watching somebody on your screen and having no clue what is going on. I have taken the best pieces, tools, and practices that I have found over the years, and condensed everything into this course. 50 hours of videos don't mean much if the instructor isn't engaging or focuses on outdated topics. I made sure that everything covered in this course is efficient and focuses on getting you job-ready as soon as possible!
We have a thriving online chat community so you really feel like you are part of a classroom and not just watching videos by yourself. You will have a chance to communicate with fellow students, work on group projects together, and contribute to open-source projects. Anytime you have a question, you can ask in many locations and get help right away (including from myself).
The course is designed to give you employable skills so you can get a job. Here is what one student recently wrote after taking the course and being hired right away: "I’m a self-taught dev, who has been out of work for ~6 months. I had some family things that came up that prevented me from seeking permanent employment, so for a while, I was Postmates/Uber delivery driver. After taking this course, I immediately got catapulted back to where I was before, but better equipped and with the knowledge to take on the next job. I had just finished the React section when I went to a recent interview, and it really helped me excel. As of today, I am officially re-employed back in the field, and it is all thanks to this course. I had a blast creating the final project and FINALLY got around to learning SQL statements, and getting to use them in a project. I’m really ecstatic that Andrei went with teaching relational databases over something like MongoDB, which can also be fun but is less practical for use on the job.   So thanks Andrei, I really enjoyed the course and will be making sure to share it with others who find it helpful. I’m also looking forward to the new ES10 content that was recently added, and going through the DB stuff again when I go to build a personal project." - J.C.
Think of this course as a Web Developer Bootcamp. By the end, you will be comfortable using the below skills and you will be able to put them on your resume:
HTML/HTML5
CSS/CSS3
SemanticUI
Responsive Design
Flexbox
CSS Grid
Bootstrap 4
DOM Manipulation
Javascript (including ES6/ES7/ES8/ES9/ES10)
Asynchronous JavaScript
HTTP/JSON/AJAX
React + Redux
Git + Github
Command Line
Node.js
Express.js
NPM
RESTful API Design
PostgresSQL
SQL
Authentication
Authorization
Scalable Infrastructure
Security
Production and Deployment
You will be taken through online videos and exercises where you will be able to do the following things by the end:
Build real complex applications and websites
Build an image recognition app so you can add it to your portfolio
Go into a job interview confident that you understand the fundamental building blocks of web development and the developer trends in 2020
Be able to go off on your own and grow your skills as a developer, having built a solid foundation
Learn how frontend, servers, and databases communicate and how they all fit together in the ecosystem
Build your own startup landing page
Go off and work remotely by being a freelance developer that can bid on projects
This course is the accumulation of all of my years working in the industry, learning, and teaching. There is so much information out there, so many opinions, and so many ways of doing things, that unless you have spent the last few years working with these technologies in a company, you will never fully understand. So this course is the answer to that exact problem for you: How to gain experience when you need experience to get hired? I have gone through thousands of coding books, online tutorials, and boot camps. Throughout the years I have taken notes on what has worked and what hasn't, and I have created this course to narrow down the most efficient way to learn with the most relevant information.  I am 100% confident that you won't find a course like this out there. We're not going to be building simple todo applications and cat image sliders. We are going to learn actual practical skills that will put you into the workforce. Some unique sections that you won't find anywhere else are:
React.js + Redux: You will learn the library that companies like Netflix, Facebook, and Instagram use to build fast, scalable applications. This is one of the highest in-demand skills in the industry.
A day in the life of a developer: What will your day to day look like and what tools will you use? I will take you through a sample day at a tech company.
How does the internet actually work? What is the history of these technologies?: You will actually understand the underlying concepts of the internet, and how the technologies we have now, have come to be where they are.
How do you actually deploy a real-life app so that it is secure, and won't get hacked?: How does a real-life app get out to the public in a safe and secure way?
What is Machine Learning and how you can harness its power: Whether you have heard about it or not, this is something that you will hear more and more in the coming years. Those who understand the high-level concepts and can harness its power will have an advantage.
What does your developer environment on your computer look like?: We will be setting up our computers with all the tools necessary for a developer so you can use the same setup when you go work in the industry.
Why do we teach the above?
Because in this day and age, just knowing HTML CSS and Javascript is not good enough, and you won't be able to grow in your role and command a higher salary. You will learn these things because these are the things you should know in 2020 so that you are miles ahead of the rest.  Make this the year that you took a risk, you learned highly in-demand skills, you had new experiences, and you received new opportunities. I hope you join me on this journey. This is the proudest work I have ever done in my life and I am confident that you won't find a course better than this. See you inside! Taught by: Andrei is the instructor of the highest rated Web Development course on Udemy as well as one of the fastest-growing. His graduates have moved on to work for some of the biggest tech companies around the world like Apple, Google, Amazon, JP Morgan, IBM, UNIQLO, etc... He has been working as a senior software developer in Silicon Valley and Toronto for many years and is now taking all that he has learned, to teach programming skills and to help you discover the amazing career opportunities that being a developer allows in life. Having been a self-taught programmer, he understands that there is an overwhelming number of online courses, tutorials, and books that are overly verbose and inadequate at teaching proper skills. Most people feel paralyzed and don't know where to start when learning a complex subject matter, or even worse, most people don't have $20,000 to spend on a coding Bootcamp. Programming skills should be affordable and open to all. An education material should teach real-life skills that are current and they should not waste a student's valuable time. Having learned important lessons from working for Fortune 500 companies, tech startups, to even founding his own business, he is now dedicating 100% of his time to teaching others valuable software development skills in order to take control of their life and work in an exciting industry with infinite possibilities. Andrei promises you that there are no other courses out there as comprehensive and as well explained. He believes that in order to learn anything of value, you need to start with the foundation and develop the roots of the tree. Only from there will you be able to learn concepts and specific skills(leaves) that connect to the foundation. Learning becomes exponential when structured in this way. Taking his experience in educational psychology and coding, Andrei's courses will take you on an understanding of complex subjects that you never thought would be possible. Attention Flying Enthusiasts!
From the Desk of Bruce ‘Flybook’ Hogan, Certified Flight Instructor, Educator, JAR & FAA Pilot Examiner
Date: Re: Soaring Like An Eagle… Dear Future Pilot,
I f you are reading this letter then it is likely that you have a passion. You have a passion for flying. For the most part people do not sit on the fence when it comes to flying – you either love it or hate it.Something yearns deep inside of you and calls to take flight. There is nothing quite so exhilarating. Allow me for a minute to indulge in a story…
My name is Bruce ‘Flybook’ Hogan. Flying has always been in my blood.
Here’s the story:
I remember as a young boy piecing together rickety old contraptions that we were sure would fly but for the most part did not.
We had a couple of near misses with death too I am sure.  One particular time we must have got 80 feet in the air and flew probably 500 feet only to come crashing down with our ‘plane’ in splinters!
One thing was certain, I knew from a young age that I was destined to soar the open skies.
Fast forward many years and I did end up following my passions.  I was fortunate enough to get my pilot’s license and eventually ended up with United Airlines.
Here’s What I’ve Accomplished:
At United, I had the pleasure to pilot 10 different aircraft ranging from a DC-3 all the way up to a Boeing 747!
I have owned a flight school for nearly 10 years.
I have over 9,000 hours of training pilots alone.
I have trained hundreds of Private Pilots,
Instrument Ratings Commercial Pilots, Airline Transport Pilots and Yes FLIGHT INSTRUCTORS !
I have taught seminars for the FAA and CAA (JAR)
I have mentored flight instructors, yes the people teaching YOU.
I have taught many pilot ground-school classes.
And I am a certified instructor in both single engine and multi engine aircraft as well as a Certified Helicopter Flight Instructor (I’ve recieved my CFI in 1998)
And here is the cool thing….I have never lost that kid inside of me who just loves to fly!  I just made a living out of it.  And now YOU can too….
” This Course Will Set A New Standard In The Field… “
“I’ve read numerous books on the subject of flight instruction, and this is clearly the best that is on the market in every respect.
This is the first course to provide the prospective or current student pilot a true “real world” perspective of what learning to fly is really all about.
The intuitive approach… combined with the crystal clear video explainations and difficult concepts, and literally the best illustrations and diagrams I have ever seen, serves to set this 2 DVD flight course apart from all others. This course will set a new standard in the field.
Michael Cruz Flight Instructor, L-39 type rating Everett, MA
Here’s the BIG problem:
Did you know that most student pilots spend thousands more than they need to and many times become frustrated with flight school owners and inexperienced flight instructors?
Do you know that many people will waste over $2000 when learning to fly because they were not properly guided by their flight instructor?
As a result many times students will not achieve their dream of learning to fly and getting their Private Pilot License because they ran out of money or just flat out got frustrated So what does this mean for you?
Get Your Pilot Training Done In 30 Days!
Well, luckily for you, getting your pilot’s license has become
a whole lot easier than it was when I got mine. There really is no excuse for not following your dream.
As such, I have spent 4 years to put together a comprehensive training course that will allow you to attain your pilot’s license in 30 days…
“The 30 Day Crash-Course To Attain Your Private Pilot License With The #1 Helicopter & Aircraft Flight Training System”
With the Private Pilot DVD Training Course, you get…

That means I know
precisely
what it takes to prepare you for the rigorous tests the FAA, JAR or ATP flight school will put you through and I know what it takes for you to pass. Let me break it down for you:

“ But Don’t Just Take Our Word For It. Listen To What Others Are Saying… ”
My training materials, exam and study guides have helped hundreds of pilots around the world. It’s almost embarrassing, but I get letters and emails from customers who have used what they’ve learned to live their dreams and even some who’ve gone on to start successful careers in the aviation industry.
But don’t just take my word for it…
listen to some of the testimonials below:
” Fresh, Thoughtful, Invaluable… “
“I’ve had the pleasure of working with Bruce on my private pilot test.
Bruce Hogan has not just the write stuff, but he’s a foremost expert at interactive education – a powerful and rare combination when it comes to aviation instruction.
This course is long on invaluable insight for the person seriously considering learning to fly…. a fresh, thoughtful and complete view into the challenges and rewards on the path to becoming a pilot. The value of this course will continue for new pilots as a favorite reference and resource for years to come.
Bruce’s private pilot course
is one of the best aviation investments you can make.
Graeme Beaver Reader’s Digest – Executive Editor CPA, Private Pilot Compton, CA
” A Must For Future Aviators! “
“Forget Jeppesen or Kings School, Bruce’s complete private pilot course will blow these courses away!
Clear, concise, and graphically superior to any other book on the market (and I have most of them). I am a commercial pilot working on my CFI and have found it even more useful the second time reading it. This ought to be the leading text for private pilots in the industry.
A must for a future Aviator!
Dr. Richard Ellis SAE S-7 Committee ATP Single & Multi Engine, CFI Single and Multi Engine, Instrument Airplane Lancashire, UK
“An Outstanding Resource!”
” I’ve had my hands on many textbooks on different subjects, but this is one of the best I’ve ever seen. The full color photos and illustrations are very well done and relevant.
The PPL training content is thorough, but they also include little one page articles covering tidbits of aviation trivia and history that are entertaining. It’s the kind of book that you pick up to read a specific topic, but continue to read about other things that caught your eye along the way. An outstanding resource for anyone interested in getting a pilot’s license”!
John Rafferty Student Pilot, Career Firefighter Southside, AL
“Excellent Preparation For Pilots & Students…”
“I am a professional airline pilot, and log virtually all of my time in large, turbojet aircraft. I am also a current CFI, although I don’t frequently exercise my Instructor privileges in single engine aircraft.
Not long ago I was approached to assist in teaching a Private Pilot ground school. The selected materials for the course was the “Complete Private Pilot Course” by Bruce Hogan, and I must say that I was very impressed with the course.
It is very complete and provides easy to comprehend explanations (normally with useful diagrams, charts, or photographs) that make learning relatively painless. I highly recommend this course to any Private Pilot or Private Pilot candidate, or to any advanced pilot as a refresher of the basics.
Dr. Chris Kleinert Aviation Consultant Charleston, S
Are these folks any different than you? No, they are not. They represent professionals, amateurs, beginners and lifelong dreamers with the same passion and dreams that you have.
The only thing they did was to put their doubts aside… and give this course a try. For some of them, it cost several thousand dollars in personal lessons – and was worth every penny.
If you, too, can simply put your doubts aside for a short time, you can see for yourself just what it’s like to learn to fly faster than you’ve ever dreamed possible… and land that license that you’ve always dreamed of.
But I really don’t want you to trust me on that. In fact, I want you to be skeptical. That’s healthy. I’ll actually help you there, because I’m going to give you my personal promise…

Having struggled myself, I can tell you this very well could be the door to your brand new, astoundingly life as a certified pilot.
In a sense, there aren’t any “short-cuts” out there. But when YOU don’t know the information, it feels like you’ll never find it. Here’s your shot. It doesn’t get easier than that. I’m not claiming this is “push-button” easy, or that you’re going to be a certified pilot tomorrow. But I AM saying it’s silly easy to get started, and attaining your license is MUCH easier than you might think. Here’s the bottom line: If you have read this far, you only have one question left…
But Bruce, How Much Does This Cost?
Well, what would it be worth to you to get started on the road to your dreams? Truthfully you’d pay hundreds if not thousands of dollars anywhere else for this information.
You should already know that ATP flight schools charge at least $39K (39 thousand!) for flight lessons and groundschool classes. It is *sheer lunacy* to be paying that kind of money!
But here’s a better comparision for you. Take a look at the prices of some other online courses::
Kings School – “Get-It-All” Private Pilot DVD Kit – $597
Gleim Private Pilot Kit With Online Groundschool – $249.95
Jeppesen GFD Private Pilot Kit – $311.95
And here’s the kicker: These course do not even cover 50% of what my Complete Private Pilot course is offering you! Listen, there is no other course in the market as comprehensive as this.
Now for the good news…for a very limited time, you can get the Complete Private Pilot 2-DVD Training Course for
NOT $673…

” Worth Every Cent. Best Course I’ve Ever Seen. “
“ The Complete Private Pilot training course is fantastic. The Private Pilot Ground School manuals are packed with useful and important information, like several of the FAA publications put together but more graphic intensive and a bit easier to read.
Each section ends with a summary and a list of key terms, as well as questions to help you burn the knowledge better into your mind.
A fantastic product, definitely one that every pilot or aspiring pilot should own. It is a “steal” at the price Bruce is offering!
