"oh my gosh, shut up!"
"yes, please shut up." noah mumbles to himself, his arms crossed in discontent. hearing your laugh usually was angelic music to his ears. but now it only sounded like a mocking melody created to provoke him.
noah watched as you, unknowing of his thoughts, stood in the kitchen immersed in conversation and light banter with daniel, mara's older brother. you laughed at whatever he was saying, playfully hitting the side of his arm. something soured inside noah the more he watched the interaction.
"dude, you keep looking at them as if you're trying to blow daniel's head up." jamie remarked, walking up next him with a can of soda in his hand.
if only, noah thought. but lucky for daniel, his gift only enabled him to heal people.
stella and the dyers were in the house's living room filled with various streamers and party decor, while you were in the kitchen with daniel, if that hadn't been clear enough. noah bitterly watched, leaning up against the wall of the hallway with a direct view of the interaction through the kitchen entrance. he was sure the scowl on his face hadn't moved since he started keeping his attention on you both.
your reason for even going in the kitchen had been to put candles and bring the cake out while mara's mother found a camera to record mara blowing out candles. it was daniel who got up by his own account from the couch and insisted he help you out. it was also him who started distracting you from the task by talking with you.
it started when you all gathered at mara's house in celebration of her birthday. her mother insisted she invited you all to the houses as a merit for mara's improvement with therapy, or at least tha's what she believed. jamie may have possibly fed her fibs involving mara's mental health with his compulsion.
your connection with the dyers had a long history, one noah was still learning. you befriended mara around the first grade after getting partnered up for a school project. you two hit it off, both having weird persoanlities of your own, but she was already friends with rachel at the time, so you remained solely school friends for years. you were also a very smart kid, which is how you also befriended daniel almost immediately after mara. weirdly enough, it wasn't through mara you both met - it was through the school's book club. later, you found out the two were related.
so, you started finding yourself at the dyer house a lot, but it was to hang out with daniel. you remained a common occurrence in mara's life, but couldn't seem to get closer than friend. you had invited her to hang out various times, but she always had the excuse of already having plans with rachel. you never took it personally, or let it wipe the smile off your face, you had other friends - that included daniel.
it wasn't until the arrival of claire and jude did your dynamic change. mara began getting excluded from claire and rachel's hangouts and found herself losing her closest friend. you took notice of mara's loneliness during school, and once again offered to hang out, and for the first time - mara accepted. she realized she really liked having you around, and you moved up from possibly last in her last to being somewhere on top.
mara still remained friends with claire and rachel, she wanted to include you in their hangouts, but you got the feeling the other girls didn't like you much, and claire's brother jude gave you a feeling of discomfort. out of courtesy you did accept an invite every now and then, but you liked it better when it was just the two of you and sometimes daniel.
on the night of the asylum, you were spending the night at mara's house, unaware and what was suppose to happen. when jude showed up, she explained then pleaded for you to join her. you were scared out of your mind, but still followed her out the window.
inside, rachel and claire dragged you away to give mara and jude alone time, but you knew something was off. you were right because jude had cornered mara when you returned. you immediately pushed jude off, and he, in retaliation, shoved you back. then, the asylum was brought down, later learned to be mara's doing, and you and her were the sole survivors. at least that was assumed at the time.
when mara's family announced their move, you pleaded with your parents for the same. you argued a new start was the best option, and it was better to be around someone that went through the same traumatic experience. by some miracle, your parents agreed and moved to miami.
you met noah through school and with your active involvement in mara's messes. at first, noah had highly doubted the two of you were friends, you were like opposite sides of the same coin. mara had bleak and ominous aura to her while you were upbeat and vibrant. in simple, mara was a black cat, and you, the orange cat.
unlike him and the majority of your friends, you weren't supernatural. at least not genetically. however, you were oddly immune to their abilities for a reason no one had an figured out yet.
your normalness is what drew noah to you at first, he thought it to be weird and admirable how despite not being supernatural, you went along and supported mara through the whole thing. as you grew closer, it extended to noah as well. he was never annoyed by your energetic attiude, your optomism, or your corny humor. he saw you as the sun that never saw the night sky. he wanted nothing more than to protect that brightness.
it took a while for you to accept his advances, the school rumors did nothing to help. you had genuinely assumed noah and mara were into each other, so you were a bit oblivious to his flirtations. noah had thought you were just uninterested, his pursing of you slowing dying. it was all cleared up when you offhandedly mentioned your assumption, and noah made sure you understood he had no romantic notions for mara. he kissed you for the first time that same day. eventually, it turned into a relationship.
noah was secure in his relationship with you. maybe he wasn't the best man, but he knew no one could love you like him. though he had serious issues of his own, he didn't have any doubts about how deep the two of you cared for each other.
he blames mara for bringing unwanted thoughts into his mind.
everyone was seated in the living room watching twilight new moon, in honor of mara turning eighteen. it had been suggested as a joke by you, but it ended up being played and invested in by the group. you were sat on noah's lap, his arm around your waist and your back to his chest. mara's mother had come in and asked you for the favor, so you stood up, gave noah a kiss on the cheek and walked off, daniel leaving a bit after. after daniel had followed you into the kitchen, mara shook her head and silently laughed, taking a sip of her drink.
noah noticing, raises a brow, "what are you laughing about?"
mara glances toward the kitchen and shakes her head, "nothing. it's just typical of daniel to do that." she says nonchalantly.
"typical of him to do what?" jamie, now invested in this conversation instead of the movie, asked.
mara shrugs, "he just always wants to help y/n, ever since we were kids. he would carry her backpack and books, help her do homework, and bandage any bruise or cut she got." she turns her head back to the tv, then smiles at a memory, "there was even a time when her date for the eighth-grade dance bailed, he stepped in. i think he does it subconsciously at this point."
noah had never thought about just how deep your friendship with daniel ran. he knew you were used to be closer to him, but he didn't think much of it because of how close you and mara were now. he had never actually seen you both interact much since he's known you.
noah glances around the room and sees the wall with various family photos. he begins to notice your involvement in a lot of photos, many which included daniel. in fact, there were more with daniel and you together rather than you and mara. he notes the photos of matching halloween costumes, birthday parties, and school events all involving the two of you, mara making a guest appearance in some. but the big picture was obvious - you had a long-lasting friendship with daniel.
jamie stuffs a handful of popcorn in his mouth, "sounds like he had a crush on her." noah's jaw clenches hearing that.
noah has known daniel since he's met mara. by this point, they were pretty good friends. he believes if daniel held any sort of affection toward you, he'd be able to see it. but then again, it wasn't as if the topic of you came up very frequently when the two hung out.
"i don't think-"
stella piped up with her input, having silently listened to the conversation, "yeah, my dad use to act like that around my mom before they got together. they were best friends for years before he finally confessed, and she even had a boyfriend at the time."
who even asked her?, noah thought.
"maybe, i wouldn't be surprised. my mom always wanted them to end up together, she already sees her as another daughter. i actually think he was her first kiss." mara responds, still focused on the film.
noah's senses sharpened at the mention of first kiss, "first kiss?"
mara realizing what she said tries to backtrack, "well, i mean, it's only a theory, but it's really nothing, noah."
noah can now feel stella and jamie cast their attention on his reaction. he leans back in his seat, uncaring, "doesn't bother me, past is the past."
that was enough for mara and the others to turn their heads back to the television. but, noah could no longer pay attention to bella and jacob on the screen.
jamie, the closest to noah on the coach, leans in to him, "personally, if that was me, i'd be overthinking this thing. i mean childhood friends is the gateway to lovers. but, hey, it's cool to see you're not that type of guy." then as if nothing, he goes back to stuffing his face with popcorn.
noah didn't know why a burning sensation began to build within him at the image of you two. he told himself it didn't matter that you were currently in the kitchen with him, alone.
noah excused himself to the bathroom, but his real intention was toward the kitchen. he told himself he wasn't jealous; he was just going to check on you like a good boyfriend. he was totally not jealous when he saw daniel close next to you, helping you place candles. nor did he feel an intense rage seeing your hands occasionally brush over each other. at least that's what he told himself.
it didn't help that you were the prettiest girl; your hair let loose, but still looked pristine, you wore a baby pink lace top with a small rose on the top middle, a gold chained necklace with a crystal heart, tiny gold hoops, on your bottom is a denim mini skirt accompanied by a sparkly belt, then to finish off you wore white knee high knitted socks with baby blue converse that had embroidered stars all over.
on the other side, noah just wore a plain gray tee and some loose-fitting black jeans. the only accessory he had on being a gold-chain necklace and a michael kors watch, both which you'd gifted him.
she's everything, he's just ken.
"why are we weirdly staring at y/n and daniel." mara had appeared out of nowhere and now joined the conversation. she had come with the purpose of informing her brother and best friend her mother was ready for them, but instead ran into jamie and noah in front of the kitchen entrance.
jamie shrugs, "i don't know, i found him like this."
noah, not paying attention to them, mutters, "since when does bringing a cake involve two fucking people."
mara looks at you and daniel in the kitchen then back at noah, "this isn't because of what i said right?" she asks noah.
"don't know what you mean." he denies.
jamie rolls his eyes, "de nile is a river in egypt. you are acting like a jealous boyfriend."
mara agrees, "seriously, you've got nothing to worry about. y/n is crazy about you, and daniel is into that new friend of his."
noah doesn't respond; he pushes himself from the wall he leaned on and waltzes into the kitchen.
jamie cackles, "this is gonna be great."
"shouldn't we do something?" mara questions feeling a bit guilty.
jamie gives mara a look, "c'mon, you can't say watching shaw feel threatened for once isn't the least bit entertaining."
mara shrugs, "fair enough."
noah walks into the kitchen, your back facing him as you talk to daniel. he doesn't say anything as he wraps his arms around his frame and fits his head in the crook of your neck. he gives a few small kisses on the side of your neck.
your conversation comes to a stop once noahs antics begin. you smile and move a hand to ruffle through his hair, "hey baby, what brings you in here?"
daniel also greets noah, but he ignores it. noah hums in contentment at your touch, "just wanted to let you know mara's mom is ready for you to bring out the cake."
daniel laughs, "right, that's what we come in here for. if only you hadn't sidetracked us with your horrible placement of candles."
you gasp, offended, dropping your hand from noah's hair, "hey! my placement was perfect, you're the on-"
"i think i hear mara calling us." noah interrupts. it was a lie, mara went back to being immersed in twilight new moon.
daniel nods and goes to carry the cake himself, and you're about to help him out, but noah hold you tight - stopping you. "let's go get seated before we sing happy birthday, i'm sure he has it covered here, don't you daniel?" noahs states with a passive aggressive tone.
you give noah a weird glance, and daniel either didn't pick up on the attitude or ignored it because he replied in his usual preppy tone, "yeah, i've got things handled over here, you guys go on ahead."
noah wastes no time in taking you to the dining room. you didn't comment on noah's attitude back there and brushed it off, thinking you might've read into things. you're blind to the glances exchanged between mara and jamie when you both return.
you go to take a seat next to noah, but he pulls up down onto his lap.
you frown, "but there's a seat right there."
"the leg is super wobbly on that one," noah then kicks one of the chair legs very hard, enough to make the once stable leg now unstable, "see? i wouldn't want my girl to hurt herself."
you kiss his cheek, "you're the best boyfriend," you tell him appreciatively.
"tell that to daniel." noah whispers.
"what was that?"
"hm? nothing."
everyone begins taking their seat at the table once daniel comes out with the cake. you inform mrs. dyer of the broken chair, which she was surprised to hear, commenting how it was fine that same morning.
everyone stands up as the happy birthday anthem begins, mara being sat in front of the cake, awkwardly waits for the singing to stop. you and jamie make sure to prolong the song as much as possible to annoy mara. she conveyed her appreciation by throwing gestures your way when he mom wasn't looking. when it does end, everyone sits down and gets a piece of cake. daniel takes a seat next too you and noah, and he notices you both sharing a chair.
being the gentleman he is, he offers his seat to you, "here, i'll stand and you can sit here-"
you grab his arm to stop him from standing, "no, no, it's alright i'm-"
noah doesn't let you finish, "she's fine here. she's used to being situated on my lap, in more way than one."
mara chokes on her drink, stella gives a disgusted look, and jamie is biting into the knuckles of his fist to stop a laugh from leaving him. daniel is visibly uncomfortable at his comment and mutters an ‘alright’ and sits back down. luckily for you, both of mara’s parents were busy handing out cake to tune into the conversation.
you turn to noah with an incredulous look, your face beginning to flush at his innuendo. noah gives you a shrug and feigns innocence, seeing no issue with his comment.
mara did you the favor of speaking up with a new topic to move past the awkward tension.
eventually, the others retreated to the living room, taking plates of cake with them. you took the chance to talk to noah privately.
you turn your head to the side and lower your voice to a whisper, “why would you say that?”
“what? it’s not like it isn’t true…” his words trails off as he leans down to kiss the crook of your neck. noah starts nibbling gently, but enough to leave faded marks on your skin.
you roll your eyes,"rather not have our friends gag before the cake." you assert.
"why? is it because you don't want dear old daniel to hear." noah mutters bitterly.
you turn your body in his lap to look at him. you furrow your brows, "why are you acting like this? i thought i was jumping to conclusions, but ever since daniel and i were in the kitchen-" noah jaw clenches at the mention of you and daniel.
"see, there you go again. anything daniel related, and you-" you cut your sentence short in realization. you should've seen it sooner, but it was the most obvious at this moment. noah was jealous.
your faces shift from confusion to amusement, and you let out a small laugh. noah was lost on the your change in demeanor, "what? why are you laughing?" he questions.
"you're jealous," your eyes widen in realization,"that's why you've been acting so weird."
he roll his eyes and shakes his head. "no, that's absurd."
"it's cute, really. i hadn't thought of you as the type." you coo at him, going as far as pinching his cheek a bit. noah retaliates and swats your hand away.
"i'm not the type," noah denies, "i've just come to the realization how annoying daniel is."
you nod, playing along, "right, the same daniel you hang out with every week. daniel. who you've called your best friend, and the one you saved from death."
"people's opinions change," noah defends, but you're still not buying into it.
"—and mara may or may not mentioned him possibly liking you at some point." noah adds in quickly.
your head snaps, "what? daniel doesn't like nor has he ever liked me."
"c'mon, you've been friends for so long and mara just happens to think he was your first kiss."
your eyebrows furrow, confused by noah words. ten, it hits you, and you can't help but snort as you remember.
"this is painfully embarrassing to admit, but that was a rumor we made up at school so people thought i'd kissed someone."you confess.
noah eyes narrow, "so you and daniel.."
"never kissed?" you finish for him,"nope, but my entire middle school class thought we did."
"perhaps, i acted a bit hastily before." your boyfriend grumbles.
"jealous." you correct in a fit of faux coughs.
noah groans in your shoulder, "i hate this feeling, make it stop."
you shrug, "it's not totally bad. it could mean you care about me so much, you hate the thought of losing me to someone else. which you won't, so you have nothing to worry about."
"promise?"
"cross my heart and hope to die." you recite heartily, drawing an x motion over your chest.
noah looks at you in adoration before leaning in to connect your lips. you hum contently, and weave a hand through his soft hair.
"unless it's my celebrity crush, then you should definitely start worrying."
"careful darling," he leans down to whisper in your ear, "i'd hate to have mara put her powers to use."
"noah i swear—"

so i've joined an informal reading circle at work and they've lent me this book called The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer, and i just... got a few hangups. from the nitpicky (if Mara Dyer is, as the first page states, a pseudonym, how are we to interpret the ouija scene in the first chapter where people think it's starting to spell "murder" then "mauling" and it turns out to be "Mara"; does her real name also start with M? did they guess similar words starting with whatever letters her real name starts with? incidentally, this is the ouija's answer to Rachael asking "how will i die?" put a pin in that for later) to the...
okay so the first two chapters absolutely hammer on how close Mara is to her best friend Rachael. like... the first chapter constantly talks about Mara's feelings or relationship towards Rachael or her observations of Rachael in the moment. and then the next chapter, set six months later, she wakes up in the hospital a few days after a building collapsed on her, also killing Rachael, Mara's boyfriend of two months, and another friend. we, the audience, are not told that the guy was her boyfriend until much later, and instead spend the chapter with Mara worrying about what happened to Rachael, immediately assuming the roses on the bedside table were from Rachael before being told that they were from her parents and that Rachael is dead.
the next chapter is Mara at Rachael's funeral. we are told that the funeral for her boyfriend (again, without the audience knowing they were dating yet) is later that day, but we do not get a scene for it. Mara now finds it impossible to live in her house specifically because Rachael was such a constant presence in it that there are memories of her everywhere (literally paraphrasing a sentence in the book here), and insists that her parents move because of it.
now, let's go back to that pin and play a little game. what kind of story do you think will follow from this? just take a moment and imagine a basic concept.
...the story that follows is a hetero romance. sure with some trippy elements and a bit of murder-mystery-ish intrigue and Mara dealing with PTSD, but in essence... it's a hetero romance.
i am absolutely fascinated in wanting to finiah this book just to try and see if i can figure out why the author made any of these choices.

50 QUESTION BOOK TAG FOR WORLD BOOK DAY
By me, Jess. I made this for world book day but then got depressed and didn’t post it on time lmao but here ya go kids be warned though it’s a long one. Also the numbers thing got fucked up and I couldn’t fix it.  I got a lot of these questions from other tags I’ve seen and google so if something sounds familiar... that’s why.
Who or what sparked your love of literature?
Aw my parents fueled my book habit when I was a kid and took me to the bookstore all the time and since then all my teachers have always encouraged me and made me love books even more than I thought possible.
Do you have an ‘odd’ book habit? (page sniffing/never leaving the house with a book)
It’s true that I never go anywhere without a book. I got one in my backpack or purse or reading on my phone but it’s always there.
Do you have a book that you think has changed your life? How?
A lot of books and series have made significant impacts on my life (like I can’t picture elementary school without Percy Jackson being in my life) but like as a person I can’t think of any one book that has changed who I am. It’s been a team effort.
Which book have you reread most frequently?
I think I reread Hush Hush every year lmao idk why
You can meet any author and ask one question. What author would you chose and what question would you ask?
I’d want to meet Shakespeare and ask him if all his characters really were just that gay or if we’re all reading too much into it.
Best book published this year so far?
It’s only March but The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi
Imagine you’ve started a book and don’t like it. Do you see the experience through to the bitter end, or are you able to talk away from it mid story?
I used to always finish what I started but now that I’m in college and have a mountain of a TBR I’ll just stop.
What book is top of your wish list/TBR pile?
Uhh A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos  is on top rn
Favourite place to read?
My bed. Boring but a classic.
If you buy books, do you lend them out? Ever had a bad experience?
Of course. No all my friends respect my stuff and return them promptly.
What fictional character do you ship yourself with?
So many but I think Gansey and I from The Raven Cycle would make the best couple.
Weirdest thing you’ve used as a bookmark
I use whatever near me so I might have done something weirder but lately I’ve been using tissues because I have a tissue box by my bed and never real bookmarks. But I’ve used graded homework, a toy car, a crayon, earbuds, etc.
Favorite quality/qualities in a protagonist and antagonist
Wow this is s hard okay for protag I am a sucker for like stubborn, smartass with a martyr complex. Sad but true. Antags I love a good morally grey character or anti-villain. Tragic backstory but smart as hell. The worst (the best). Characters like the Darkling from The Grisha Trilogy, and Warner from the first Shatter Me book (I know he’s a good guy NOW but back then we all thought he was a sadistic and sexy villain).
Favorite genre and favorite book from that genre.
YA Urban Fantasy babyyy and that’d be City of Bones by Cassandra Clare or Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare:)
Best/worst movie adaptation in your eyes
Best: Harry Potter and The Hunger Games | Worst: Percy Jackson
Do you prefer reading your own books, or library books?
My own.
How do you choose your next book to read?
Literally whatever I’m feeling like at the moment.
Your favorite word.
I love many words but I have a soft spot for “lively” and “lilt”.
Book that got you hooked on reading/how you got hooked.
I’ve always been obsessed with reading but The Peter and the Starcatchers Series was like my shift from nicotine to heroine.
Opinion on dog-earing, margin writing, ect.
I only write in the margins of books I have to read for class/textbooks. And that’s for studying and active reading purposes. For any other situation: no.
Top 5 immediate to read in no order
A Winter’s Promise by Christelle Dabos
A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi
Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
The Wicker King by K. Ancrum
A Darker Shade of Magic by V.E Schwab
Most underrated book you’ve read
Definitely The Foxhole Court/ All for the Game series. Fairly small fanbase for some of THE most amazing books I’ve ever read. And the memes will have you in stitches.
What is the first book that catches your eye when you look at your bookshelf?
Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell because of the exceedingly bright cover/spine haha
How do you arrange your books on your shelves?
LOL I do not have a system at all. I keep series and authors together and that’s it. Everything is placed where there is room.
You have the power to change a book’s ending. Which ending would you change and what would you make happen instead?
I’d change the end to Allegiant and SPOILERS SPOILERS not make Tris fucking die over her shitty ass brother. I know why she did it but like Veronica girl wyd with that. And I’d want the entirety of Mockingjay by Suzanne Collins to be rewritten into a book that just focused on the domestic life of Finnick and Annie and no one dies.
Favourite book cover?
This is SO HARD. Either The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin or Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi
Which book from your childhood has had the most impact on you?
My entire personality was shaped by the Maxmimum Ride series by James Patterson. For better and worse.
When reading, what do you value most: writing style, characters, plot, world building, pacing, etc?
Characters. I think all of those things are essential and as I read more and more, the pickier I get, but I find myself leaning towards being a fan of a book when I become obsessed with the characters. Like hey!! New friends!!! For my brain!!!
Do you prefer buying books or borrowing them from a library/friend?
Buying them even though I shouldn’t. It’s a real problem.
What books/sequels that are being published this year are you most excited for?
SO MANY OH MY GOD
Okay some of these already came out because it’s March right now but I’ll include them anyways.
SEQUELS/ SPIN-OFFS AND SHIT
The Wicked King by Holly Black; King of Scars by Leigh Bardugo; Dream by Natalia Jaster; Chain of Gold by Cassandra Clare; The Red Scrolls of Magic by Cassandra Clare; Capturing the Devil by Kerri Maniscalco, Call Down the Hawk by Maggie Stiefvater; Defy Me by Tahereh Mafi; The Shaw Confessions #3 by Michelle Hodkin
FIRST BOOKS
The Binding by Bridget Collins; Wicked Saints by Emily A. Duncan; The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi; A Curse So Dark and Lonely by Brigid Kemmerer; Romanov by Nadine Brandes; The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen; The Beautiful by Renee Ahdieh
Which fictional character would you want as a sidekick?
Percy Jackson because he’s my firstborn son and one of my favourite characters of all time. He is talented, smart, hilarious, an amazing friend, and the sweetest of boys (when he isn’t the sassiest of boys).
How many books have you read so far this year?
Only 15 I am so behind :(
What’s been your favourite read so far this year?
Oh man. Gotta be Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo :)
You’re stuck on an island with a suitcase big enough to hold five books. What books are they?
I probably shouldn’t cheat and say How to Build a Boat huh
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
The King’s Men by Nora Sakovic
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
If you had to go out to dinner with any character who would it be and why? What would you talk about?
Will Herondale and we’d talk about books
Is there a book you have such a hatred for that you would throw it off of the highest tower knowing that the last copy of it will be destroyed so that not another living soul can read it or would you rather keep it and give it to someone else who might actually enjoy it?
The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne or After by Anna Todd
Do you believe books make nice decoration?
I mean. I think they should be read before used as decor but I love showing off my books so I guess both. But I don’t believe in buying books for the purpose of decoration instead of reference or reading lol
Do you listen to music when you read? Or do you need complete silence?
I need silence or low amount of white noise. I used to read and listen to Taylor Swift when I was a kid but I can’t do it anymore.
Do you have a favorite book? If not are you in the group that believes there are too many great books out there to just choose one?
I tell people it’s City of Bones by Cassandra Clare but in all honesty no I don’t have a favourite.
Do you sleep with books under your pillow.
Nope
Do you go to the library or do you have a book buying addiction or are you one of those lucky people who is able to do both?
I do both. Mostly bookstore though.
Own any book inspired clothing?
Yes. Several items :)
Have you ever read a book in another language?
I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Tristan and Isolde, and Beauty and the Beast in French. And parts of Les Mis.
Strangest book you’ve ever read?
John Dies at the End by David Wong. Still not sure exactly what was going on.
Favourite type of non-fiction?
Memoirs babey
Favourite non-fiction?
Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Favourite subject to read about?
History
Favourite book you’ve read in school?
Wuthering Heights by Emily Bronte
Favourite work of Shakespeare?
Hamlet
Character you’d love as a mom or dad or guardian?

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer
★ ★ ★ ☆ ☆
First impressions: I feel like I’m reading a Hush Hush AU. But more on the ridiculous side than creepy.
We have the creepy stalker guy. We have 16 year olds legitimately contemplating murder. We have 16 year olds who sound nothing of their age and like 35 year old soccer moms.
Daniel kinda freaks me out. He’s like mom #2 to Mara? Making sure she gives this random guy a chance, making sure she goes to her doctor for a check up? Making sure she takes her meds and wanting to know if she’s having any side effects? What sort of sibling, high school aged sibling, actually behaves like that? Telling her “you should let him in” re: getting to know Noah? “thanks bro you’re a sport” ok yeah what 17 year old says things like that un ironically? what a freak.
I thoroughly enjoyed the first half of this book, and then it sort of fell apart once the real plot was underway. The foundation of what the story appeared to be was just swept under the rug in favor of romance. The big reveal of what happened to her friends who died should have been a HUGE moment, but it just fell flat because we’re over that and focusing on the romance now.
Spoilers I guess start here
Noah and Mara. Nora and Patch is that you? Just slightly less creepy and slightly more intelligent. Of course “plain” heroine and whatever falls in love with the douchiest possible guy in school, and of course he’s *changed* because of her. ugh. He’s insanely wealthy of course, but also drives a Prius and I really can’t just let that slide.
The *diversity*. So Hodkin just got all of her diversity over in one character. Adopted black bi Jewish dreadlock and tongue stud clad Jamie, who gets expelled pretty fast and we never hear from him again.. classic. And okay, yes, people of that description surely exist. But we didn’t even get to know these things from getting to know Jamie. He just said it all in one sentence “But none of this matters, because you’re not going to listen to your token black Jewish bi friend, are you?” How boring can you get, not even letting us get to know what should be a super interesting character?
The Spanish teacher... oh boy. Mara pulls an idiotic stunt during an oral exam and thinks she’s a total badass because of it and ignores the teacher telling her to sit down and she just keeps harassing the teacher and making a huge scene... and gets an F. and is entirely offended that her actions have consequences so she imagines an elaborate death for the teacher....?
The kidnapping....... “your brother is kidnapped and you can’t ask me how I know but I know exactly where he is” the whole ordeal was awkward and rushed. it needed more fleshing out because it really just? Noah Is a Kidnapper vibes
ugh. It’s a bad teenage romance disguised as paranormal fiction. I wish we could have just stuck to the main plot, but there were so many bunny trails and loose ends and Hodkin tried to incorporate all these different elements but it just came out choppy and awkward. It’s terrible in so many ways but I also enjoyed it?

Books I’ve Read So Far In 2018 (Volume II)
Well I've read a couple more books since I last updated you guys so thought I'd get sharing them on here.
Tumblr media
9. Countless by Karen Gregory
I actually really enjoyed this book. I didn't think it was a literary masterpiece, but I enjoyed my time learning the story of Hedda, a pregnant anorexia-suffering teenager. I can't comment myself on the quality of the representation of anorexia in this book, but what I do know about it was reflected well. Hedda must make the biggest choice she ever has; does she keep the baby, or keep the anorexia? On top of this she then has to decide, if she has the baby, is she keeping it, or putting it up for adoption? Although this story didn't move me to the extent I imagined it would, I found this an emotional and at the same time enjoyable read - would recommend.
Tumblr media
10.  Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Paige
I had mixed feelings about this book. It is based on The Wizard of Oz, concerning another 'Dorothy' arriving from Kansas in the land of Oz. Since the original story has left off, Dorothy has returned to Oz, and become and evil and power-hungry ruler. It's the first book that I have read as an e-book, so was taking this into account as I was reviewing it. I was very interested in the storyline, and I felt like a re-telling of the Wizard of Oz was a very interesting place to go. But, it didn't do everything for me I wanted it to. I went into this book not knowing that it was part of a series, so I assumed that the drama of the book would come to a solution by the end. When this was not the case, I was disappointed with the time I had committed to it. Never the less, it was an enjoyable storyline and I think that carrying on with the series would be a good move if I enjoyed the story as a whole a little bit more.
Tumblr media
11. The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer by Michelle Hodkin
I really enjoyed this book. The story follows Mara, whose friends died in a tragic accident. She moves to a new school, in a new town, to try and move on with the situation. She struggles to leave it behind because she can't remember what happened to her friends, and why they were even at the site of the accident on that night. Alongside all of her confusion, and stresses of starting a new school, somewhat paranormal things start happening to her that she can't understand or control. This is the first paranormal romance I have read of the year so far, and I really enjoyed it. The romance wasn't too heavy and definitely not forced. I have read similar stories with the truth of an accident being uncovered so really liked how this story was close to those, but had added supernatural elements. It's part of a series, which I have not delved into yet, though I am keen to do so. Would definitely recommend to a YA reader who needs a new type of supernatural.
Tumblr media
12. It Only Happens in the Movies by Holly Bourne
Upon starting this book, I didn't realise that it was the same author as my number 3 read of the year (see first book update), who I did not enjoy. This book was very similar. I enjoyed the storyline, though hated the additional elements of 'feminism' thrown in. The story follows Audrey, who is so over romance after the divorce of her mum and dad and the break-up with her first boyfriend. Then she meets Harry at her new job at the cinema, who is deeply into making his own films. She is asked to take the starring role, and Audrey can't help but fall for Harry. I enjoyed this part of the book, with the soppy to-good-to-be-true romance, but I got a little bit fed up with the underlying messages Holly Bourne was trying to push. Audrey stars as a zombie in Harry's film, but she just HAS to make this a feminist zombie, which I really didn't agree with. All in all, I LOVED the cover of the book, but hated the underlying messages. I'd recommend it to a 10-12 year old girl who wants a romance, but doesn't pick up on some of the authors opinions.
Tumblr media
13. The Distance Between Us by Kasie West
I stupidly enjoyed this book. It was a YA romance, that was definitely to-good-to-be-true, that you expect from the beginning, but love anyway. Caymen lives above the doll-store her mother owns; they are struggling with money and can't afford to pay the bills. The story line is sort of predictable, but I feel like that didn't matter at all to me. The fact I thought I knew what would happen next made me want to keep reading so I could find out, and I was like that every chapter. It was a very easy read; I read it in 2 days on my phone. It was perfect for a really stressed out couple of days revising, so the nice, easy, happy romance worked out well for me. I really would have liked this story to go further though. I wanted it to go further, to see what would happen between the two characters in the future. I think either the book could've been longer, or there should have been a sequel. I have so many questions about what happens next! I would definitely recommend it as a summer romance read.
Tumblr media
14. Trouble by Non Pratt
I am very torn about this book. It follows Hannah, a teenager in high school without the best reputation with the boys, and Aaron, the history teachers son who is new to the school. Hannah finds herself pregnant and the talk of the school is the identity of the father. I thought this book had so much potential, and that there were many wasted opportunities with the storyline. When I was about halfway through the book, I wrote down my guess to the father's identity. It was scandalous, but it would've worked, and I think it would have made the perfect story. But, I was wrong. I obviously won't say who the father is, but I really thought my guess would have made more logical sense. Although saying that, I did really enjoy the book - enough to finish it in two days! I found the writing style easy to follow. Usually I don't like dual perspectives but because there would be no more than 1-2 pages, and sometimes only 1-2 sentences in someones perspective, I actually found this very interesting to read. So on the whole, I enjoyed it and would recommend it to others, but I have some thoughts that would've made it even better!!
Tumblr media
15. More Than This by Patrick Ness
"A boy drowns, desperate and alone in his final moments. He dies. Then he wakes, naked and bruised and thirsty, but alive. How can this be? And what is this strange deserted place?". I've had to just copy that from the blurb of the book because the storyline is impossible to describe. It's one of those books that you just HAVE to read, otherwise it will literally make no sense if someone tries to explain it. This is a difficult review for me. I struggled to get into the book, but when I went away for a couple of days and only had this to read, I found myself reading 100+ pages a day. The storyline was good because the reader's understanding of the world develops slowly throughout, and each small chapter leaves you desperate to read the next one. But, I was not happy with the ending. I don't believe there is a sequel to this book (correct me if I'm wrong) but I think I need one to close the story for me. I don't like how it's been left, and all in all that ruined the whole experience for me. I'd recommend this book but I think a couple of changes could be made to make it an absolute fantastic read.
Tumblr media
16. The Roanoke Girls by Amy Engel
And finally, The Roanoke Girls. This book was actually recommended to me, as a 'dark' adult fiction. It was definitely dark, that's for sure. But saying that, it wasn't shocking. "Everyone wants to be a Roanoke girl. But you won't when you know the truth." Those two lines really drew me into this story; I needed to know why I didn't want to be a part of their family. I didn't enjoy the writing style of this book all to much, because it switched between the present, the past of the main character and also of every other character in the book. I felt it hard to keep up with at times, but managed to pull all of the chapters together as an enjoyable read. I did guess the 'big secret' in the first few chapters of the book, but there were also tidbits along the way that really did throw me off course. I would recommend this book, but not to those of a sensitive nature. It's not for the light-hearted.
General Reading Update:
I am still about half way through Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, which I have been since April - I really don't have the motivation to sit and finish this!
I said in April that I was thinking about picking up Carve the Mark, which I did, but I DNF'd it very shortly after starting. It wasn't for me, which is a shame because I really love the Divergent series.
I am around 100 pages or so into Heartless by Marissa Meyer which is the story of the Queen of Hearts from Alice in Wonderland before she was the Queen. It's actually quite interesting but I'm struggling to get through at any sort of speed.
I am also listening to Salt to the Sea by Ruta Sepetys on audio book. I have never listened to an audio book before so I'm generally excited to see how it goes. I'm not very far in but I'm picking it up whenever it's quiet in the office and I can sit and have it playing in the background. I don't know how much I'm soaking in but I like the comforting feeling of a book being read while you go about your day.
I think the next book for me is Clean by Juno Dawson. I got this out of my local library and am excited to start it as soon as I finish Heartless.
If you've stuck with me for this long thank you very much! If you want to see what books I finish, when I finish them, here's my goodreads link: https://www.goodreads.com/user/show/14068917-chloeTTFN

Unbecoming Recap
It’s officially September which means, we’ve finished The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer and are starting The Evolution of Mara Dyer! Yay!!
Under the cut, I’ll be giving a brief recap of the happenings of Unbecoming (mainly for those who can’t/don’t have time to re read before The Becoming of Noah Shaw comes out. I got you)
IF YOU’D LIKE TO JOIN @iliveinbooks AND I IN RE-READING, YOU CAN CLICK HEEREEEE.
Some spoilers below. And maybe some things to discuss?
We start Unbecoming with one of my favorite openings of any book; a letter written by “Mara Dyer” on a disclosed date in New York. Later on it’s important
Mara was in an accident where a building collapsed and her friends, Claire, Rachel, and Jude (at the time boyfriend) died
Mara has PTSD, among other things, due to the accident
Mara’s mom, Indi, keeps a close eye on her
Mara and her older brother Daniel start school at Croyden high
Anna and Aiden are bullies and assholes and they will eventually be important in a small way
Mara meets Noah briefly
Mara eventually makes a friend in Jamie Roth
Mara has hallucinations and sees Jude around campus and Claire in the mirror
It comes to Mara’s attention that her father--a lawyer-- took on a high profile case and that’s one of the main reasons her family moved to Florida.
After coming home from a party, Mara burns herself with the bath water after “seeing” that her mother’s earrings had fallen in, resulting in second-degree burns.
Mara encounters an abused dog and when confronted by the owner, imagines a crude death for him. She calls animal control, and later when she goes to check on the dog, finds the owner dead in the exact way she imaged (WHICH HE DESERVED, FUCKING ASSHOLE STARVING POOR MABLE)
Noah helps Mara get the dog--Mable--some help with his step-mom, who is a vet.
Anna steals Mara’s sketch pad and shows it to everyone, where it’s found that she draws Noah. Instead being the dick in the movies who laughs, Noah turns around and says that he knows about it.
Noah asks Mara on a date. She agrees
Noah meets Mara’s family, and Joseph--Mara’s younger brother-- asks for Noah’s number.
On their first date, Mara and Noah talk in the car and he holds her hand (WHICH IS A THING LATER, I’M NOT WEIRD)
Mara passes out after a hallucination and mildly confesses to Noah about why her family moved
Mara has an oral exam in Spanish where things get out of hand and Mara is kicked out
Ms. Morales--the Spanish teacher--fails Mara, and she tries to remedy her grade. Later in the story, Mara imagines her dead and finds her dead in the same way she imagined it. It’s said that Morales had an allergic reaction to fire ants, which caused her death.
Jamie confesses to Mara that Noah used Jamie’s sister, Stephanie, to get back at Jamie for being in a relationship with Katie (Noah’s sister) PAY ATTENTION TO THIS.
Jamie gets expelled from school after Aiden said he threatened him and he and Anna planted a knife to frame him. Thus, leaving Mara virtually friendless.
Later, Daniel takes Mara for a check-up on her burn, where the doctor finds that it is 100% healed. She writes it off as a mistake on the part of the DR’s in ER.
One night, Noah comes to Mara, saying that Joseph has been kidnapped. They find him in a swamp, where he is unconscious but unhurt. While getting Joseph back to the car, Mara imagines the alligators in the swamp dead, in order to save her brother, Noah, and her self.
Noah takes Mara to a spiritual meeting on her birthday, after she insists, and they find Mr. Lukumi, a Santeria specialist, who helps her remember what happened to her, using a weird mix of things that may or may not contain fresh chicken blood.
Mara wakes up in Noah’s room where eventually they kiss and Noah stops breathing. Noah “wakes up” and tells Mara that it was a dream and never actually happened.
Mara eventually remembers what happened in the accident, where she realizes that Jude almost raped her. She realizes that, in her terror, SHE made the building collapse, and killed her friends and Jude. She also concludes that she indeed killed Mabel’s owner and Morales, as well as the animals in the everglade. This eventually leads Mara to a depressive state.
Noah eventually breaks Mara out of her depressive episode and she confesses to him about what is going on and how she believes she is the cause of it. Noah also confesses that he may have something similar going on, stating that he sometimes has visions of people--including Mara and Joseph. He continues on, saying that he can “hear” many things in people, including when they lie, when their hearts start racing, and when they’re hurt. He also confesses to being able to heal himself and others, revealing that he healed Mara’s burn, among other things.
After not being able to find Lukumi again, Noah takes Mara to a zoo where he has access to animals and insects to test their powers. Mara ends up killing all the animals from the terror of them. She also finds that fish and alligators in the swamp where they found Joseph, have died too.
Thinking that her father’s client was the one who kidnapped Joseph, Noah and Mara race to the courthouse where Mara decides to kill Lassiter if he is found not guilty for the murder of Jordana Palmer. Noah tries to convince Mara that it’s not worth it, and while she continues on with her plan, she finds that Lassiter AND her father were shot by Jordana’s mother. (This event, I believe is important later on)
In a flurry of guilt, Mara decides to “turn herself in” to the police. While at the station, she sees Jude, alive, and with hands.
So I think that’s pretty much the main parts of the story.
To talk about the second to last point, in the book Mara recounts all the deaths she’s caused and how she decides 100% that she wants Lassiter to die for taking Joseph. I think this is the real moment where she starts to become the anti-hero that most of us know from the later book (and for those people just starting the serious, you’ll see what I mean later). This is the first moment where she consciously decides to kill someone, not out of self-defense, or even on accident, but on pure, unadulterated hatred. It’s honestly such a great turning point for her character. And the one person who really knows about this, does not see it happening.
SO I’M JUST GONNA PUT SOME OF MY FAVORITE QUOTES ON HERE. SOME. CAUSE THERE’S A LOT AND I’M TIRED.
We were so different. I had none of her exquisite Indian features; not her perfect oval face or her lacquer-black hair. Instead, my father’s patrician nose and jaw were reflected in my own.
I threatened him with Ebola
One little joke involving hemorrhagic fever and they brand you ‘unstable.’
I’d figure out how to break the news to my parents that--surprise!--we have a dog. They had to take pity on their screwed-up daughter and her pathetic companion. I was not above milking my tragedy for a high purpose. (I will forever be sad that Mara in fact did not get a companion)
That’s my girl.
“You like me,” he finally said. “You like me, like me.” He was trying not to smile. “No. I hate you.”
You crotch-pheasant (honestly, the amount of colorful names is my favorite. LET’S NOT FORGET EVERYONE’S FAVORITE, ASSCROWN)
“Death cab?” I asked. “Really?”
His touch felt like home
The Ebola kid?
“Ibrahim Hassin?” Noah nodded. I died.
“Joseph actually,” Noah said, texting something back. “And to offer a stock tip.” I have the strangest family.
But none of this matters, because you’re not going to listen to your token black Jewish bi friend, are you? (LOOK AT THIS. READ THIS LINE OVER. I LOVE THE DIVERSITY IN JUST THIS LINE)
Noah fights dirty.
Don’t let the man keep you down.
I should haul back and smack him, strike a blow for feminism or something....
You ought to go to NYU. More diversity. It’s not healthy to have too many geniuses packed into one campus. (COUGH COUGH)
Yeah. Nothing like hearing the girl you just started dating is on anti psychotics
Hookers and blow aren’t cheap, but I suppose animal sacrifice will have to do. Happy birthday.
“What,” I asked slowly, as I eyed the animal crackers strewn all over it, “the hell?” “You were convinced they were your pets,” Noah said, not even trying to suppress his laughter. “You wouldn’t let me touch them.”
The husk of a girl not-named Mara stared back at me. I wondered how I would kill her. (COUGH)
The necklace he always wore had slipped out during the night. I looked closely at it for the first time; the pendant was just a slim line of silver--half hammered into the shape of a feather, the other half a dagger.
I would have been afraid if I didn’t know better. the scariest thing in the room was me.
I was made for you, Mara.
And that’s it for this round. So far on Mara’s hitlist, we have five people dead (six if you count Lassiter who is basically a vegetable and will not wake up), and numerous animals and insects. I count Lassiter, SO SIX PEOPLE DEAD, LOOK AT MY GIRL GO. WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MARA? IS JUDE REALLY THERE OR IS THIS JUST ANOTHER HALLUCINATION? FIND OUT NEXT TIME AS WE READ THE EVOLUTION OF MARA DYER.

Soooo I have been M.I.A lately because of lack of sleep / new baby, but I thought I would do a fun post to get back into the swing of things… I just so happen to have quite a few series sitting on my shelves that I have either started and not finished or just haven’t started at all.
So I thought it would be fun to list them all and make myself feel bad for not reading them. Yaaay!! So my list was longer than I anticipated so I have turned this into a two or three part series… Could possibly extend to four lol.
The Lunar Chronicles
This series comes highly recommended by @teacherofya and she has ridiculously good taste in books. I ended up going a little crazy and getting the series for my birthday this year! My partner was not impressed with the amount of books I bought for my birthday and I will admit that I may have gone a little OTT but we were on holidays in a town with good bookshops! I don’t know what else he expected!! I still haven’t started it…. I do plan to start it soon.
“A young cyborg begins her fight against a dangerous queen in these smart, romantic thrillers set in a high-tech dystopian future.”
Mara Dyer
These books have always intrigued me!! They sound amazing and I was lucky enough to get them via @teacherofya. Also another series she recommends, I think that the majority of this list will have her seal of approval lol. Another one I haven’t started yet.
Mara cannot remember anything about the night her friends died. All she knows is what she’s been told: they went to an abandoned asylum, the building collapsed, and only Mara survived.
Two months later, Mara is eager to move forward with her life in a new town, but that’s easier said than done. A boy at school named Noah Shaw seems to know more about Mara’s tragic past than she does. And to make matters worse, Mara is beginning to see people and things that can’t possibly be there. Or can they?
When Mara goes searching for answers, she discovers a secret about herself that is most unbecoming. A secret that promises a future full of destruction, pain, love, evolution, and ultimately, retribution.
The Selection
This is one series that I have started!! And adore! This story is pretty much The Bachelor on steroids, with Royalty and it is amazing!!
For thirty-five girls, the Selection is the chance of a lifetime. The opportunity to escape the life laid out for them since birth. To be swept up in a world of glittering gowns and priceless jewels. To live in a palace and compete for the heart of gorgeous Prince Maxon.
But for America Singer, being Selected is a nightmare. It means turning her back on her secret love with Aspen, who is a caste below her. Leaving her home to enter a fierce competition for a crown she doesn’t want. Living in a palace that is constantly threatened by violent rebel attacks.
Then America meets Prince Maxon. Gradually, she starts to question all the plans she’s made for herself—and realizes that the life she’s always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined
Matched
In the Society, officials decide. Who you love. Where you work. When you die.
Cassia has always trusted their choices. It’s hardly any price to pay for a long life, the perfect job, the ideal mate. So when her best friend appears on the Matching screen, Cassia knows with complete certainty that he is the one…until she sees another face flash for an instant before the screen fades to black. Now Cassia is faced with impossible choices: between Xander and Ky, between the only life she’s known and a path no one else has ever dared follow—between perfection and passion.
Matched is a story for right now and storytelling with the resonance of a classic.
How can you not want to read this series!! Plus I picked up the complete series from a second hand book shop for like $10.
The Program
In Sloane’s world, true feelings are forbidden, teen suicide is an epidemic, and the only solution is The Program.
Sloane knows better than to cry in front of anyone. With suicide now an international epidemic, one outburst could land her in The Program, the only proven course of treatment. Sloane’s parents have already lost one child; Sloane knows they’ll do anything to keep her alive. She also knows that everyone who’s been through The Program returns as a blank slate. Because their depression is gone—but so are their memories.
Under constant surveillance at home and at school, Sloane puts on a brave face and keeps her feelings buried as deep as she can. The only person Sloane can be herself with is James. He’s promised to keep them both safe and out of treatment, and Sloane knows their love is strong enough to withstand anything. But despite the promises they made to each other, it’s getting harder to hide the truth. They are both growing weaker. Depression is setting in. And The Program is coming for them.
Another series that sounds amazing! This one was also highly recommended by Steph @ Teacherofya. I don’t have the complete series yet but I am getting there! I hate having incomplete series sitting on my shelf!!
Splintered
Alyssa Gardner hears the whispers of bugs and flowers—precisely the affliction that landed her mother in a mental hospital years before. This family curse stretches back to her ancestor Alice Liddell, the real-life inspiration for Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Alyssa might be crazy, but she manages to keep it together. For now.
When her mother’s mental health takes a turn for the worse, Alyssa learns that what she thought was fiction is based in terrifying reality. The real Wonderland is a place far darker and more twisted than Lewis Carroll ever let on. There, Alyssa must pass a series of tests, including draining an ocean of Alice’s tears, waking the slumbering tea party, and subduing a vicious bandersnatch, to fix Alice’s mistakes and save her family. She must also decide whom to trust: Jeb, her gorgeous best friend and secret crush, or the sexy but suspicious Morpheus, her guide through Wonderland, who may have dark motives of his own.
I love anything Alice in Wonderland! I feel like all my must read series have been recommended by Steph lol. How gorgeous are the covers!!!
The Lone City
“Today is my last day as Violet Lasting. Tomorrow I become Lot 197.”
The Jewel is a shocking and compelling new YA series from debut author, Amy Ewing.
Sold for six million diamantes, Violet is now Surrogate of the House of the Lake in the centre of the Lone City, the Jewel. Her sole purpose is to produce a healthy heir for the Duchess – a woman Violet fears and despises.
Violet is trapped in a living death, her name and body no longer her own. She fights to hold on to her own identity and sanity, uncertain of the fate of her friends, isolated and at the mercy of the Duchess.
The Handmaid’s Tale meets The Other Boleyn Girl in a world where beauty and brutality collide.
This series was a cover buy! Also part of my birthday haul haha. How could I resist these, just look at the pretties!! Plus they sound intriguing!!
The Red Queen
This is a world divided by blood – red or silver.
The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change.
That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power.
Fearful of Mare’s potential, the Silvers hide her in plain view, declaring her a long-lost Silver princess, now engaged to a Silver prince. Despite knowing that one misstep would mean her death, Mare works silently to help the Red Guard, a militant resistance group, and bring down the Silver regime.
But this is a world of betrayal and lies, and Mare has entered a dangerous dance – Reds against Silvers, prince against prince, and Mare against her own heart.
I have read the first book! Now to read the next two, plus the novella, before War Storm comes out!! I can do this!!
Grisha Verse (and Six of Crows)
I feel like these two just speak for themselves. There is so much hype and love for these books I just had to buy them… Now to find the time to read them.
Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.
Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.
Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha . . . and the secrets of her heart.
Shadow and Bone is the first installment in Leigh Bardugo’s Grisha Trilogy.
Criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker has been offered wealth beyond his wildest dreams. But to claim it, he’ll have to pull off a seemingly impossible heist:
Break into the notorious Ice Court (a military stronghold that has never been breached)
Retrieve a hostage (who could unleash magical havoc on the world)
Survive long enough to collect his reward (and spend it)
Kaz needs a crew desperate enough to take on this suicide mission and dangerous enough to get the job done – and he knows exactly who: six of the deadliest outcasts the city has to offer. Together, they just might be unstoppable – if they don’t kill each other first.
So I am cutting it off there for this post, however there are more series that I want to read / finish so I will be back with a part two!!
Have you read / want to read any of these series? Is there anyone else who can’t stand having incomplete series, even if you haven’t started the series yet?
Series I need to read (or finish)! Part I Soooo I have been M.I.A lately because of lack of sleep / new baby, but I thought I would do a fun post to get back into the swing of things...
