Say aloha to a few feline stars in this year's second annual Great American Rescue Bowl: Meowi Wowi, Hana Lulu, and Surfin Sammy.

In an exclusive clip from the special — which hails from Great American Family Channel and North Shore Animal League America, the world's largest no-kill rescue and adoption organization — Meowi Wowi and Hana Lulu can be seen partying it up in one of the exclusive Sky Boxes while rooting for Surfin Sammy down on the field.

All three kittens are from Hawaii, which experienced devastating wildfires last year. As the narrator tells us in the clip above: "Because of the Hawaii fires, shelters in the islands have been overwhelmed, and these little kitties traveled over 5,000 miles to make room for fire victims in their home state."

Just like the inaugural special, this year's show seeks to raise awareness of the importance of animal adoption, by featuring adorable playmaking on the field between dogs and cats of all ages. "This year, we have two teams — the Adorables and the Cuddlers — and each have a kitten squad and puppy squad," explains returning host, author, and animal rights advocate Beth Stern. "We have more on-the-field action, and we captured ridiculously cute footage of the animals watching their friends playing from the luxury Sky Boxes, prepping in the locker rooms, and holding watch parties."

Speaking of, animals in the Sky Boxes like Meowi Wowi and Hana Lulu will be seen wearing Silpada charms on their collars. Part of the Pet Charms for a Cause Collection, the sterling silver charms and necklaces available help save more animals — 40% of proceeds from each charm or necklace purchase are donated by Silpada to North Shore Animal League America through the end of February. (20% of proceeds will continue to be donated after February.)

Elsewhere in the special, Stern promises, "We also have some really inspiring, heartwarming updates on animals who North Shore Animal League America has helped find loving homes. This whole show is a big, warm, fuzzy hug."

It's an admittedly great gig, but Stern admits it's not without its challenges. "There’s only so much story we can tell. Two hours just isn’t enough! Trying to squeeze in so much cuteness, fun, and animal rescue and adoption information into a once-a-year special is a tall order," she says, giving a shoutout to all the unsung heroes working off camera. "There are so many great people working behind-the-scenes to rescue these animals, care for them, and find them responsible, loving homes."

Stern continues, "And so many animals — I like to call them perfectly imperfect — need a little more TLC and a lot more spotlight directed onto them, so they find the perfect adopters, too. I always want to make sure the message I’m sharing with viewers is the best voice I can give to these animals."

Stern, who says she doesn't pick favorites but particularly loved crowd-pleasing pup Ima Goodboy and sweet kitten Rob Groncatski from this year's lineup, also wants to stress to viewers that the dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens of the Rescue Bowl are representative of the wide array of animals available for adoption at North Shore Animal League America, and at shelters and rescue organizations across the country. Says Stern, "You can bring this unconditional love and cuteness into your home just by visiting your local rescue."

The Great American Rescue Bowl airs on Great American Family Channel on Super Bowl Sunday, Feb. 11, from noon-2 p.m. ET.

I honor of events in Washington we have some shut-down music on deck. In 50s and 60s hot rod racing parlance, to "shut down" someone means to beat that person in a race and the surf music offshoot of hot-rod songs spent quite bit of time exploring that subject. As we looked at last week, surf music had a relatively short life span - only existing from about 1960 to 1964 and in that time period it quickly exhausted the available thematic material associated with beaches, girls and waves. In an effort to diversify, songwriters looked to other teen pastimes that they could still equate with he California lifestyle - which was still selling records - an obvious choice was cars. While cars and souped up hot rods had been a part of teen culture and pop songs since the end of WW2, surf bands now made a conscious effort to put the subject front and center. It was also and easy lift for them to swap out surfboards for cars while leaving much of the musical formula intact. As one writer put it: “Instead of slang about waxes and boards; you used slang about carburetors and pistons; instead of name-dropping the top surfing beaches, you cited the nicknames for the top drag-racing strips; instead of warning about the dangers of a 'Wipe Out,' you warned of 'Dead Man's Curve.'"

Hot rod and custom car culture can trace it’s origins back to the 1920s with the modified cars used in bootlegging operations and was a precursor to NASCAR and semi-professional track racing around the country. However, as the southwestern part of the United States does not have the weather and car eating road salt issues that we might have here in Vermont, there were many more old and cheap cars to be had in California which lowered the barrier of entry to younger and more casual car enthusiasts. When WW2 ended, there were suddenly many abandoned military airports all over the country that made wonderful ready made drag strips. Small clubs of modified car fans would have semi-legal races and meets in the desert as the hobby became larger. By the late 50s early 60s, we were at the height of the California Dream epitomized by Surf music and surfing groups adapted some of their musical tropes to fit in with the burgeoning craze. By the late 1960s and 70s, custom car culture and waned a bit as car manufacturers had began production line, ready-made street-legal versions of hot-rods as seen in muscle cars such as the mustang, GTO and Malibu SS. Hot Rodding and car culture continued though and today is experiencing a bit of a revival and this quintessentially American genre is even reaching beyond it’s sunny California roots to such unlikely locals as Australia, the UK, and Scandinavia.

Frogman Fubblegum

Ah, Sum-Sum-Summertime. The season of sun, sand, sea, surfing, SCUBA diving, superheroic blockbuster movies, cartoons, toys and all the fun you can have. Speaking of SCUBA diving and cartoons, since the Summer of 2018 is in full effect (despite some real dark rainclouds), femmes and gentlemechs, allow me to introduce you to the wet, watery and wonderful world of my Frogman Adventure Time Fubblegum art.

It all began with ideas born of watching certain Adventure Time episodes.

The pieces fell into place. My course was clear as crystal. I put my pencils to paper and got to work drawing in 2016.

Femmes and gentlemechs, boils and gargoyles (especially you, @fubblegummers, @ppgxrrblove, @jasffaa and @fubblegumappreciation) behold the result: my first Frogman Fubblegum fan art masterpiece.

Summer of 2016: Starring Finn and Princess Bubblegum clad in swimwear (Finn in his swimshorts and Bubblegum in her sporty one-piece swimsuit and swimcap as seen in Water Park Prank) and their unique SCUBA gear during diving class in the pool (and armed with the MertensCalibur and a Candy Theromshok Trident in case the Coalition Navy, the Letzt Batallion Kriegsmarine, Apocalypse’s Infinites and the Esoteric Order of Dagon (from the Aeon War of Cthulhutech) dives in).

Summer of 2017: Ah, another year, another June, another summer awaits us. The beginning of summer and all the fun under the sun, the sand and the sea it promises... swimmin', surfin', SCUBA divin' or just plain havin' fun, the nearest beach or water park has it all. Oh yes. And it's the month of June Bride. So in honor of this occassion, have I got some SCUBA fun drawn up for ya folks - specifically Finn and Bubblegum as SORESO Frogmen in SCUBA gear and with enough fighting power to make the Navy SEALs jealous.

And just in case of really hot water, when it's time to pack it in and Exit Stage Up in a hurry, all Finn and Bubblegum need to do is yank the rescue jacket inflator cords on their SCUBA jackets and up, up and away to the surface in their cute, comfy and puffy inflatable rescue lifejackets they go! (Hope they remember to breathe out on the way up - don't wanna get the bends!)

He was kind enough to read over my shoulder and give me feedback as I was writing this episode (and future ones), but I would still like to hear from others if there was a more graceful way to handle topics like this (and that includes feedback like "this isn't your story to tell, rewrite it").

Upfront: I don't plan to do a whole lot with Sol's feelings on this other than offer her reassurance that she belongs via found family because I don't trust myself to delve too deeply into it. Sol's father is native to Alola (Hawai'i) but did not have the opportunity to introduce her to her culture before needing to flee from his abusive wife, so while Sol is half Alolan, she feels very unfamiliar with that part of herself.

Klaine Summer Challenge Day 10: Surfin’ USA

Hello, hello, hello. I am still writing this and I am planning on publishing all of them. Unfortunately, I should’ve thought this through, since I am about to leave for vacation and I can’t really write then.

But we’ll see. Guess it’ll take me 3 more weeks to finish this challenge!

Kurt and Blaine always talked about kids in a future tense. They’re too young to think about kids in the present tense.

Even though Kurt’s just celebrated his thirty-first birthday, they still aren’t really discussing it. That all changes one day.

Kurt’s reading through the script of his next role on Broadway when the front door opens.

“Kurt, honey? Are you home?” Blaine calls out. He sounds a bit nervous.

“Yes?” Kurt says and he puts down his script. He has a weird feeling about this, especially when Blaine doesn’t enter the living room. He gets up to have a look.

“So, remember how we said we weren’t ready for kids?” Blaine says and Kurt stops. Of course he remembers that, but why on Earth is Blaine bringing this up. Kurt knows Blaine can’t just march inside an orphanage and adopt a bunch of kids, but then again, it’s Blaine. He always finds a way to surprise him.

Kurt puts his hand on the door handle, ready to push the door open. “Sweetheart, what did you do?” he asks.

He can hear Blaine whisper to someone- at least, Kurt assumes it’s a someone.

“Blaine, what did you do?” he asks again.

“H-Hang on for a moment, please,” Blaine says and then he starts to whisper again. Now, Kurt’s really getting worried.

“Blaine, I am opening this door right now!” Kurt says loudly and he pushes the door open. His mouth falls open when he sees Blaine-

-holding at least ten little ducklings in his coat.

“I can explain!” Blaine says the moment he sees the look on Kurt’s face.

Kurt tries to say something, but how do you react to your husband coming home with a squad of little ducklings? This isn’t the first time Blaine came home with more questionable stuff, but this time, it’s alive.

“Please do,” Kurt eventually manages to say.

Blaine gestures to Kurt to follow him. Blaine goes to the living room, and to his shock, he puts down his coat and all the little ducklings start walking around their living room.

“Blaine!”

But Blaine takes Kurt’s hand. “Trust me, it’s fine. Look at them.” He points towards the ducklings. They’ve all formed a group and they’re looking at them.

“Why are they staring at us?” Kurt asks.

“They’re staring at me,” Blaine clarifies and he starts to explain, “I was walking home and they just- they saw me and they started following me. Look at this.” Blaine starts to walk around the living room and the ducklings follow him immediately. “I didn’t know what to do, so I just took of my coat and picked them all up and brought them here. I know we’re not ready for kids, but we have eleven ducklings now.”

Kurt quickly counts every duckling. Since Blaine’s standing still, they’re still as well, so it’s easy to count them.

“We can’t take care of eleven kids- I mean, ducklings!”

“Look, the closest animal shelter is miles away, so I propose we look after them until we can call them so that they can pick these cuties up.” Blaine crouches next to the ducklings and Kurt’s can’t believe it when one of them jumps in Blaine’s hands.

“Well, if we have to.”

Turns out that it took the shelter four more hours before they had time to pick them up. In those four hours, Kurt and Blaine were basically babysitting ducklings. Blaine played with them and Kurt Googled suitable food for them. Blaine cuddled with all of them and he even convinced Kurt to try as well.

Eventually, the ducklings were taken away.

“Bye bye!” Blaine waves them goodbye and he wipes away his tears. The ducklings try to go back, but they no longer can.

Kurt feels sad as well. He wasn’t as attatched to them as Blaine, but they were fun. He puts an arm around his husband and together they mourn the loss of their ducklings.

Later that night, when they’re both in bed, Blaine can’t sleep.

“I miss them.”

“I know, sweetie,” Kurt says, “You were a good mother duck, or father duck.”

“Same for you!” Blaine says.

It’s silent for a while until Blaine tells Kurt what’s been on his mind the whole time. “Kurt, I think I’m ready.”

Kurt sits up. “For what?”

“For kids,” Blaine says.

Kurt’s eyes widen and he immediately turns on the lights. “What?”

Blaine smiles. “I know they were just ducklings, not actual babies, but the way we took care of them really moved me. We can do this, Kurt. Please, do this with me.”

Kurt knows he should need more time to think this through. After all, you can’t compare ducklings with actual babies, but he feels it too. He nods.

He nods.

“Let’s take this route.”
