This school of scalloped hammerheads was not a sight we expected to see, but what a sight it was! Experts are actually unsure why scalloped hammerheads school, but some theorize they school this way as juveniles, and continue the behavior into young adulthood!
Honestly throughout my scuba diving journey, I haven't seen green turtles while diving, only hawksbill until my most recent dive trip. I got to see a total of 3 green turtles underwater and it was cool experience:) A bonus nesting mother out of water as well. 4 green turtles on the trip:) Omnivorous when they are juveniles and move more into a herbivorous diet of seagrass and algae as adults.
They create water bubbles around their heads that allow them to live outside of water. The tip of their tails is made of sharp metal and can be detached to be used as a throwing spear, growing back in a mater of moments.
They are based on the Water Anole (Anolis Aquaticus), a type of anole found in Costa Rica that creates air bubbles to breathe underwater
Their harpoon shaped tails being used for hunting is based on spearfishing
A close encounter with a very scarred individual! This is potentially a male, evidenced by the heavy rake marks down his body (it is often assumed more heavily scarred dolphins are male due to mating competitions), though it is possible these scars were caused by his environment at some point. Also of note are his parasites - if you look closely at the edges of his pectoral and caudal (tail) fin, you can see what almost looks like fringe. These are actually dangling parasites, likely Xenobalanus globicipitis, which is actually a kind of elongate barnacle!
Bonus: if you look closely, a black manta makes a low fly-by in the background
Scuba diving instructor: And why have you taken up scuba diving?
Din: Well, I hunted bounty. And then the husband joined.
Din: I then became king. And then the husband joined.
Din: Now I’ve taken up Scuba Diving because the husband grew up on Tattoine and never lent to swim.
signed up to my uni diving club. The last question on the form was: "why do you want to dive (in your own words)"
me on the form: yeah im doing a marine bio course, interested in fish and want to see them in their natural habitat.
