Top Five Books I've Read (so far) In 2023:
5. Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr (Audiobook): One of the more unique novels I've read in a while, this book bounces around in time and place slowly weaving each dispirate story together around the fictitious ancient greek story of Cloud Cuckoo Land. Each character is so well created, and the slow thrill of putting the pieces together was so satisfying. The ending made me stare at the wall for a few moments before I could come back to earth.
Read if you like: Ted Chiang short stories, The Birds by Aristophanes, Margaret Atwood sci-fi
4. Truth of the Divine by Lindsay Ellis (Physical book): The sequel to her debut novel, Axiom's End, this book takes the monster fucking story to a whole new level exploring the concepts of attraction, loyalty, love, and humanity. The world building is incredible, the main character doesn't have that awful trait that a lot of sci-fi audience inserts have where they cannot possibly make logical connections and answer questions themselves. Cora is smart, and Ellis assumes you are smart too. Plus the recreation of 2007 era America is fucking perfect.
Read if you like: Early 2000's nostalgia, Jeff VanderMeer books, Axiom's End, 90s alien movies like Contact, Independence Day, Aliens
3. The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegmund-Broka (Physical book): I've read a bunch of romance this year, and this was one of my absolute favorites. Certainly not the spiciest I've read, but the interplay between the two points of view creates a romantic, sexual, and professional tension that is so palpable and delicious. I loved the meta narrative of two people writing a book together about two people writing a book together, and the exploration of what making art together means and the intimacy required to do it. It's a little predictable, but that's what you want from a romance novel. This was a fun book with just enough stakes and just enough stress to make the payoff so worth it.
Read if you like: Emily Henry books, movies like You've Got Mail, Something's Gotta Give, Always Be My Maybe
2. The It Girl by Ruth Ware (audiobook): I love Ruth ware. I love her. I have read everything she has written so far and will read anything she puts out. I selected this one for my list because I love the setting of a close knit school campus, a shining bright young woman with a dark secret, and the real time unravelling of a murder mystery through the eyes of someone on the ground. This book explores the idea of how little we can know about the people we are closest to, and how easy it is to blind ourselves to the truth because of what we want to be true. It's a captivating read, easily finished in a day or two.
Read if you like: One by One by Ruth Ware, Gossip Girl, Jennifer's Body
1. The Secret History by Donna Tart (physical book): I cannot believe how long it took me to read this book. It was one of those books that kept getting recommended to me, but I was worried it was over hyped and would be awful. I tried to read it about two years ago and couldn't even get through the first chapter. And yet, somehow, I picked this book up and did not put it down for a week and a half. It's incredible. An absolute masterclass on Dark Academia, tension building, atmospheric storytelling, all the things I love the most about literature with all the modern trappings of an aesthetic I have also come to love. Rich kids in a private school testing the boundaries of privilege through the POV of an outsider desperate to be accepted is one of my favorite tropes and this book is the definition of how to do it right. It's dark, its academic, it's murdery, it's the 90s, it's excellent. I'll be reading this one again.
Read if you like: A Separate Peace, Brideshead Revisited, Gentlemen and Players, The Talented Mr Ripley

Hey so... does anyone who has ever actually written a kiss scene before maybe want to take a look at this one from one of my pending wips, please?👉👈 🙈
I don't generally write romance, and I think I've only written a handful of kisses in my life. I usually just prefer to just say something like "and then they kissed" and leave it at that lol. 😂 However, my sister was teasing me about it a little recently saying that I can really only write one (1) kiss scene and just keep writing the same thing over and over 😅 So I was really trying to push myself this time...
I tried to include some of the buildup and a little bit of the aftermath in this snippet so it isn't completely out of context, but I'm mostly just concerned about the actual kissing part...😅 That said, I would really appreciate any constructive feedback (even if you’ve never written a kiss scene) since I've been struggling with this for a while. Thank you so much for taking a look at it! 💕
And yes, it is Kelbrey... They're probably my favorite pairing at the moment. I have written a kiss scene for them before, but this is a very different take...[but thankfully, in a post-good ending universe this time 😅]
(Warnings: arguing, French kissing, punching, brief mention of blood, brief mention of alcohol but they are aged-up here and therefore of legal drinking age)
“I’m done, okay?” she cut him off with biting words. “I’m not going to stand here and let you blame me for wasting your time and holding you back, when you’re the one who’s out here running after me. I never asked you to do any of that."
“I know you didn’t. That’s not what I’m—” Kel stopped abruptly, gripping his hands into frustrated fists. “Aubrey, you’re not listening to—”
“No, you’re not listening,” she interjected. “If you want something, go ahead, Kel. Go for it. Fight for it. I’m not stopping you.”
Aubrey huffed, standing on her toes and leaning towards him, so close he could feel her warm, huffy breath brushing against his skin. When she met his eyes, he could scarcely catch his own breath. It got caught in his chest as he watched her bite down hard on her lip. His trembling hands were slick with sweat, and he swallowed hard, desperately trying to clear that dryness from his mouth. He considered trying to stumble over his words again, but when he opened his mouth, he choked on anything he could possibly say, overwhelmed by how close she was. If he wanted, he could reach out and touch her—stroke her cheek, run her hair through his fingers, even kiss…
“What is it that you even want, Kel? Do you even know?” Her voice, shaky but insistent, cut through his thoughts. “Huh? What do you want?"
It happened too quickly for Kel to even process what he was doing. He grabbed her face in his hands and leapt forward—his mouth crashing against hers, frantic yet effortless. It was almost as if his body was moving on its own, finally snapping under the pressure of her forceful questions, argumentative taunts, and the pent-up romantic frustration he had been carrying around for far too long. At that moment, his head was empty apart from the desperation to answer her question and the knowledge he had already tripped over his words enough. He could only hope that the fervid yearning of his kiss screamed “You! I want to be with you!” far louder than any words.
He felt her jerk backwards in surprise, but she didn’t break their kiss. Instead, she gripped the collar of his shirt and—could he even bring himself to believe it—pulled him closer to her. When she was finally flush against his chest, he tangled his hand in her hair. That ardent longing clawed at the ache in his chest as his heart raced. He could feel the softness of her cheek, the brush of the side of her nose. He could smell that faint watermelon of her shampoo in her hair, could taste that lingering rum and cola on her lips, but it still somehow felt like an out of body experience—almost like it was all happening to someone else while he could only just stand there awestruck and completely overwhelmed by her.
She sighed against his mouth—her lips finally parting enough to allow his tongue to dart between them. A strangled yelp got caught in the back of her throat mingling with the sound of distant thunder and skidding tires on the street. Almost immediately, she pushed him away with a forceful shove, and before he could even think of what to say, of how to even begin to apologize or explain, her fist collided with his nose.
"Ow!" Kel struggled to catch his breath as he groaned in pain, cursing under his breath and reaching up to instinctively grab his throbbing nose. What had just happened? Had he really…had he finally kissed Aubrey? Had she kissed him back? And then…had she broken his nose? That last part made sense at least.
“What the hell was that, Kel?” she snapped between heavy, gasping breaths.
“I don’t—I don’t know. I can’t—” he stopped abruptly gripping his throbbing nose with his hand. He couldn’t think—too distracted by his pounding heartbeat, swirling head, and aching nose to even begin to process what had happened. He wiped a thin stream of blood onto the back of his hand. “You—you punched me in the nose!”
“You stuck your tongue in my mouth,” she snapped at him, and he flushed red, though he was sure his face must have been crimson already.
“Yeah…” he sheepishly admitted. She seemed far more upset about that than he was expecting. Was he just a terrible kisser? Truthfully, he didn’t have much—he cleared his throat—any experience, but that was usually how people kissed in movies, wasn’t it? And when she had finally opened her mouth, it had just felt right, had felt incredible to… He stopped and swallowed hard. “I’m sorry. I…I won’t do it again.”
“Why did you do it now?” Aubrey demanded. Her eyes were wide, and her face was flushed red. Was she really that angry? Kel shuffled his feet and shrugged his shoulders.
“I dunno…” he mumbled. “Look, Aubrey…I’m sorry. Can we just…take it back—pretend it never happened?”
“This isn’t something you can just take back, Kel. You just French kissed me in the middle of the street!”
“Actually, this is a sidewalk," he teased in an attempt to lighten the mood though he couldn't bring himself to look at her.

...was it romantic when you instinctively knew someone’s very existence fascinated you, made you grateful? Finding it romantic would be missing the point, like valuing the sun because it was bright. I’m glad for the light, but really, I’m grateful for the fact it sustains life on Earth.

MY NOVEMBER WRAP UP | we started out so strong...
MY NOVEMBER WRAP UP | we started out so strong…
Ah, November… you happened ugh.All I remember about you is that I binged (and loved) Ted Lasso, I saw Glass Onion twice in cinemas and Disenchanted came out and I didn’t love it, unfortunately. November started out really strongly with a 24 hour reading binge and then my continued obsession with the Discworld series! (more…)

I read The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberly & Austin Siegemund-Broka...
Tumblr media
I hardly read the blurb of this book and this is my first book by this duo and I unabashedly love this book. I know that there are mixed reactions with this book when I checked it on goodreads and I'm not ashamed that I'm one of the people who enjoyed this.. I love the ‘then and ‘now’ perspective that makes the narrating so provoking. It’s angsty and the tension building was amazing. I also love how the main characters are so believable. At first I was afraid that it has the trope that I hate the most but luckily it didn't.. How they show how painful it is to meet the right person at the wrong time is something that just hit home for me. This is beautifully written and it deserves more hype.

Book thoughts: The Roughest Draft
1.5 ✰
This was so boring, and everyone blew every. litte. thing. way out of proportion. They were so dramatic about literally everything. miscommunication with your best friend? don't talk to her for four years, have it resolved in 2 pages. That was 90% of the issues in this book: communication
so much of this book was like reading every 50 pages of another book that the protagonists were writing, where I did not care about the fake book. And even if I did, there wasn't enough info to justify so much of this book dedicated to the fake book in the story. the writing itself was so pseudo intellectual, with Nathan going on and on and on about the nature of metaphors and stuff. he did two things that gave me such bad second hand embarrassment I had to put the book down.
the main conflict and any following conflicts were so dumb and contrived, anyone with any social skills could have resolved them. the reason why the protags stopped talking and started like assholes to each other was so stupid. I hated the flashbacks because they were so short and barely contributed anything to the plot and cut off the pace. instead of having 50 three page flashbacks, have 20 that are 15 pages long. also why?? in the climax of the book?? would you have a flashback??? as the characters are getting together?? they're literally about to bone and the authors decided "yeah, lets add a 3 page flashback about them meeting! doesn't matter that they're about to fuck! let's ruin the pace!" completely took me out of the moment and it happened so often it was outrageous
the authors were either married or had an affair with each other with how much of this book was emphasized on that aspect. lo and behold they're married to each other. sooo hate to be a cynical bitch but it felt like the authors just wanted to write a watpad story about themself

Rough Review of The Roughest Draft by Emily Wibberley and Austin Siegemund-Broka
I have always been in love with words, that's why I am currently studying English. As a kid books have been my comfort, I read everything from magazines, my mother's old books, brochures given by Jehovah Witnesses, anything and everything that has words, I read. I grew up and started reading Wattpad in eBook format that we shared through Bluetooth amongst my classmates. Then I moved on to reading novels, fiction to non-fiction, memoirs, biographies, short stories. Anything and everything that has words just like when I was a kid.
I think what appealed to me about The Roughest Draft is the fact that the characters are both writers. Sure I consider myself a writer, the stack of unfinished stories in my laptop says a lot about me as a writer. But I am one, I used to write in elementary, won contests for that, did not continue in high school but I was still writing albeit quietly and without fanfare. Katrina and Nathan are both writers, they co-wrote a book and had a falling out and broke their partnership. Now, four years later they are writing a new book. What I love about the book is how their thoughts are explained, they are writers so their thoughts are so elaborate, descriptive and yet simple. There's a flow, a rhythm every time they think about something. I saw some people have an issue about the idea that everything could have been resolved if they talked and communicated in a healthy manner. But they did, Katrina and Nathan both understood each other perfectly well that Nathan realized what the reason behind Katrina's burning of the letter. He understood her without her saying anything, and it hurt him. Katrina understood what Nathan meant through his letter and got scared but she understood him. The only reason why they broke their partnership is because Katrina's scared. Sure they could have talked things through, Nathan could've asked Katrina why she's terrified but can you really ask the person you just bared yourself to why they are hurting you? Because if I were asked that I would answer no. Was Nathan's retaliation through the NYT interview right? No, he's hurt and he forgot that Katrina is scared. In the first chapters, he said that he realized it's wrong the moment it escaped his lips which means that he does not have control over his emotions which shows he is hurt and he is human. Katrina is a character who would choose to wrap herself in a blanket and only reach the world by extending one arm outside the comforts of the blanket. Her relationship with Chris is toxic, unhealthy, and she knows herself that she's not happy anymore but Chris has become a part of her blanket, and letting him go means opening herself to the world. She's not naïve, she's smart but she's kind and it's her downfall. She's a martyr more than she's a kind person, she chose to write the book for Chris even though she did not want to. The book shows her growth as a person, and as a writer.
For the elements of the plot, some people have issues with the fact that they are kind of writing a fanfiction of their life but these same people forgot that writers often take from their real life. Taylor Swift wrote a lot of her songs because of what she experienced since she was a teenager. Real life affects what we write because we write best about the things we have experienced. Maybe not the magic or the dragons or the elves but the journey, the camaraderie of friends, the warmth of a hug from a parent. Throughout our lives we experience a lot of things that we incorporate in our works. There is a recurring meme regarding literary analysis, that literature teachers often over-explain the symbolism in the piece or they try too hard to find symbolism in it even if there is none. I agree, sometimes the curtain is blue just because but often when we look into the life of the author, the time it was written, or the time in the piece, the curtain is blue because it's the color of the author's bedroom curtains or it's the most favored color of curtain in that time or era. This can be pointed out by the fact that Nathan took what Katrina is wearing and doing and used it to describe the woman in their story. The yellow dress could just be a yellow dress but the yellow dress was chosen because according to Nathan, Katrina looks nice in it.
The book isn't perfect, but it described a story of two people who understood each other perfectly yet made mistakes that changed their life but at the end, they both grew personally and professionally. I give this book a 4 star.

Hello! Feel free to ignore if you’ve lost interest in your TFA microwave AU (love it). I noticed your sketches show Shockwave and Soundwave interacting with a mix of antagonism and near- tenderness… is this a frenemies situation? Changing dynamic over time? Thanks for the brainworms lol
yes!! i love that description so much oml that is basically what i wanted for them when first playing with the idea for that au, i really love the idea of them both being incredibly single-minded on completing their mission, but also as time passes, while being made to live and work together, they come to begrudgingly respect each other's dedication and value for the decepticon cause ;D from how i've understood these two in tfa, i don't think they could ever fully trust each other on a deeper personal level, but they both know that they can depend on the other to not drag the mission down or make careless mistakes that could get them both caught, which is already a step up on closeness compared to,,all other tfa decepticons??.,
neither of them would ever admit to anything as autobot-ly sappy as being "friends" but really they are best friends but at the same time shockwave would punt soundwave into traffic if he could and soundwave seriously considers poisoning shockwave's energon multiple times per day, except they are both too useful for their common goal to actually get rid of
glad you're enjoying this au idea!!!
(older doodle,, i think its fun tho)

The outline/notes for that one are still in the very early stages but I’m happy to share what I’ve got so far!

He’s waiting for Tony to come back from the bathroom, the next episode of Crime Scene Kitchen queued up on the tv, when his phone vibrates with a text from Jack.
this prod meeting is running long, probs won’t be back until late. Go ahead and watch w/o me
Everything ok?
ya but part of the set got busted during a scene change so I gotta figure when/how to fix it before tomorrow night
I’ll put your takeout in the fridge and save you some egg rolls
and that’s why you’re my favorite
Say hi to Medda for me
of course
“Jack’s not going to be home until late,” Davey announces as Tony wanders back into the living room. “He says we should start without him.”
….
“Dave,” Tony says, sighing deeply. “Why am I looking at a PowerPoint titled, “Jack Kelly + David Jacobs: A Comprehensive Argument for Maintaining Equilibrium.”
Davey pins him with a scathing look. “It’s a Google Slides presentation, you godless heathen.”
“What the fuck?” Tony asks, ignoring him, clicking rapidly through the screens. “When did you even make this?”
Davey shifts in his seat. “I mean, it’s more of a living document, so it’s never really finished—“
“Davey.”
“A couple years ago, I guess,” Davey says. “Give or take.”
Tony squints at the computer screen. “It’s saved on your old university account.”
“Okay, or maybe it was three months into junior year!” Davey admits, crossing his arms over his chest. “It was a stressful semester and I was super nervous about failing my animal science midterm and Jack was out on a date with that PoliSci major that lived upstairs and— And the when isn’t the point! The point is, according to my research, telling Jack isn’t worth the risk of ruining our friendship.”
“What are these graphs even measuring?” Tony asks, staring at one of the slides. “‘Overall Happiness, Jacobs v Others’?”
….
“Well, your math is absolute shit, for one thing,” Tony says, frowning at a graph entitled ‘Art Pieces per Subject’. Davey’s name is sitting in dead last. “There’s no way these numbers are right. Jack draws you literally all of the time.”
Davey frowns right back at him. “No, he doesn’t.”
“Uh, yeah he fucking does,” Tony disagrees. “You’re, like, one of his favorite things to make art of, period. He spends about half his time bitching about how copic doesn’t make a marker that matches your eyes—at this point I’m pretty sure he’s got more drawings of you than actual pictures.”
“I think I would’ve noticed if Jack suddenly started drawing me,” Davey scoffs, shaking his head. “It’s not like he’s subtle when something’s caught his eye. Plus, he lets me flip through his sketchbooks whenever he finishes filling one and I’m almost never in them.”
“Which one?” Tony asks.
Davey blinks. “Which one, what?”
“Which one,” Tony repeats, oddly intent. “Which sketchbook does he show you?”
“What do you mean, which one?” Davey asks, irritated. “The only one! The one he always— it’s not like it’s some big secret!”
Tony stares. Then Tony sighs.
Very quietly, Davey hears him mutter, “…pair of fucking morons.”
…..
“Okay, but, riddle me this,” Tony says. “Why don’t you just tell him? What’s the worst that could happen?”
“What’s the worst that could— I literally just went over all the reasons why that’s a horrible idea!” Davey exclaims. “It would ruin everything!”
“I really don’t think it would, Dave,” Tony says. “You and Jack… will ya at least think about it?”
“I’ve done nothing but think about it,” Davey says, and to his horror, he can feel his eyes starting to sting. “I can’t.”
“Want me to do it?” Tony offers, and he says it like a joke but Davey knows him too well to think that he’s anything but absolutely serious.
He jolts forward, arms outstretched as if to preemptively cram the words back down his throat. “Don’t you fucking dare, Tones, I am so fucking serious—“
“Okay, okay!” Tony says, holding up his hands in surrender. “I won’t snitch on your neurotic ass, even if it’d make you happier in the long run. My word as my bond or whatever.”
Davey huffs out a laugh, and it’s only a little teary. “Fuck you, my neurotic ass is the reason you made it to graduation, shithead.”
…..
“Hey, can I borrow your laptop?” Jack asks. “Mine’s dead and I left my charger at the theater.”
“Yeah, go ahead,” Davey absently responds.
…..
“Davey,” Jack says, voice straining. “What the hell is this?”
“What is what?” Davey asks.
“This.” He turns the laptop around and— oh shit. It’s The Argument.
He feels his blood run cold. “Oh,” he says. “That.”
“Dave,” Jack says, his mouth set in a hard, thin line. “Did you make a fucking PowerPoint about me? About us?”
Davey swallows. “…It’s actually a Google Slides presentation,” he says weakly.
…..
“You’re telling me this is nothing?” Jack demands, incredulous. He tilts the screen back to show Davey the current slide, which is just an enlarged photo of Jack’s handsome, smiling face, surrounded by a halo of red arrows and the caption, ‘JUST LOOK AT HIM,’ written in boldfaced text. “Nothing? Nothing at all?”
“Maybe we can stop looking at it now,” Davey says, loudly. He leans over the back of the couch, making another panicked grab for his laptop, but Jack dodges out of the way, clicking to the next slide.
