The Epic Amazing Absolutely Insane TAOCC Song Post
Aka: Elsie assigns random songs to random characters for random reasons, vaguely organized by mod. These are almost entirely vibes and randomness so get ready to be utterly confused. Don’t expect any of these to fit too well, I went more based on the sound and random stuff than the actual accuracy. Also i’m kinda brain-broken from overthinking all this music lol. No, I didn’t add links, just because this took so many hours. Maybe tomorrow, I just wanna get this done.
Feiar’s characters.
Nymn
“Dento takes the Stairs” by Gooseworx
I told you these would make no sense. Idk the amount of nymn just being vibes/silly/lighthearted makes me think of how this song is a break from the chaos of the Elain series.
Jessy
“Metamodernity” by Vansire
Okay, I have a really specific animatic in my head for this song in which we flash between the TAOCC characters as they are in the circus, and then a cool transition, and then it’s them pre-circus. My best example is Dusk and Jessy sitting on a bench. A train passes by, and now it’s human Jessy sitting alone on a bench. Because Dusk is AI. And that very specific part of the animatic in my head tends to stick with me, especially seeing as Jessy is very “just go with stuff” and so I can kinda hear him singing this in my head.
”Apocalypse Now” by PinnoccioP
The first appearance of many of my favorite music artist lol. The song is about enjoying existence even if everything is a violent wreck, and it just kinda fits to me lol.
“World’s Smallest Violin” - AJR
yeah just gonna drop this one here and run
“Sweet Tooth” - Scott Helman
Blame Fei.
Clara
”Drosselmeyer’s theme - Kurumi Wari Ningyo (Nutcracker No. 2 March) - The Princess Tutu Soundtrack
Okay, for starters, you should watch Princess Tutu. Like right now. It’s amazing, and the title does NOT do it Justice. Back on track, it…it’s the nutcracker! Come on, this one was basically handed to me.
Tutu vs Kraehe (Swan Lake Act 1 Op. 20 No. 2)
Fight theme.
Lance
”I Don’t Have a Name For It” - Steam Powered Giraffe
I…I’m sorry I don’t have an explanation for this it just works. Lancia sweep.
Raina
”Nightcall” - Kavinsky
…Once again, very flimsy. But like…switch the gender. I’m sorry but it’s giving “they’re talking about my death but I’m still here.” The miku version works better here in my opinion :3
The pirates
“He’s a pirate” - F-777
“The 7 Seas” - F-777
idk man techno piracy go vrrrrrrrr I unironically blasted these during like the entirety of the pirates plotline frick you this is my rant I do what I want /silly
Star’s Characters
Icia
”Long Live” - Taylor Swift
I swear I have reasons for this just hear me out okay- First off, I can see the voice fitting, second off, I imagine her singing this either for Lance or Starro or both after we finally finally finally throw Hexe off a cliff.
“Santa Salvacion” - Magia Record OST
epic fight theme for fighting the terrifying ice lady. I blasted this while writing the fight scene with The Dark Queen Icia.
Dunite
”Postmeridae” - Madoka Magica OST
Cutesy upbeat theme for making merengues to. No notes.
“Witches Dance” - Magia Record OST
Idk, feels like her fight theme
”Roki” - Mikito P
…Vibes. Entirely vibes. Dunite should start a band /hj.
Starro
“Please Never Fall In Love Again” - Ollie MN
I just…him. Singing this. About Conny. I swear to cheese.
Vaga and Nova
“Class Dance - Rensho Kyoku I” - Princess Tutu OST
…Vibes.
Odette
”Vocalise Op. 34 No. 14” - Madoka Magica OST
Vibes. Piano. Sad string accompaniment. Must I say more?
Achilles
“Doubt #2” - Madoka Magica: Rebellion OST
Starting to notice a pattern with the kingdom characters lol?
Joofie’s Characters
Cardlan
“Main Character” - Will Wood
Ego. So, so much Ego.
“Sayo-Nara” - DDLC OST
I have my reasons.
Minimi
“Not Yet (Epilogue)” - Madoka Magica: Rebellion OST
Accordion and a little bit of ominousness. Vibes.
Xeyshattersiltav1a’s Characters
Sun
“Cowboy Dan” - Modest Mouse
Yee-haw sun. Do not give that woman a truck. Wow, these descriptions are getting terrible lol.
”Popular” - Wicked Soundtrack
Wicked but it’s sun and Dusk lives in my head rent free okay
“Alright” - Mother Mother
please help me I keep making up sun animatics with this song in class
Mix
“Something, Everything is Wrong” - Madoka Magica: Rebellion OST
This song is the reason I associate Mix with the accordion. Also, I imagine Dusk meeting him/his first real introduction in TAOCC’s background music as this song.
“Intertwined” - CMYK, CircusP.
Rip this man’s love life
“Love is War” - Ryo/Supercell feat. Hatsune Miku
Love is still Vehicular Manslaughter /ref
Dialtone
“Cats!” - waterflame
Does the song fit him? Not at all! It is way too techy and upbeat, and would probably better suit someone like Switch. But like….cats. He’d listen to a song called “cats!”. You can’t convince me otherwise.
“Want You Gone” - The Portal OST
Dialtone is GLaDOS coded to me.
“Killer Spider” - PinnoccioP
vibes and vibes alone.
Soup’s Characters
Silhouette
“Scared of you” - Brandon Hesslau
“Whoops, sorry for kinda almost killing you.”
”What Gave It Away” - Riproducer
evil.
”Burial Ground” - Low Roar
sad backstory.mp3.
Clown
“I’m Number One” - Muppets Most Wanted Soundtrack
Look man he’s silly and egotistical and it’s funny. He’s definitely singing this with carbine.
Autumn’s Characters
Pyxel
”Magical Doctor” - MARETU
once again, more vibes than lyrics and the gender’s wrong but, like, the vibes, man
Neb
“Lonely UFO” - PinnoccioP
…it doesn’t fit. The lyrics, as far as I can tell, do NOT fit. BUT LOOK AT THE OUTFIT, THE BLUE HAIR AND VOID SKIN AND MURDER TEETH AND TELL ME THAT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE NEB, OKAY?!
“Finding Sanctuary” - Stellaris OST
Silly space song for silly space person.
Lily’s Characters
The bookend siblings, and I mean all of them as a group, Katrina included for brevity’s sake
“Magical Girl and Chocolate” - PinnoccioP
Okay, I have actual reasoning for this one. Each of the siblings is someone’s “magical girl”, whether metaphorically or literally. They’re each fighting to protect and support someone. And they each strain and struggle to cope with a role too demanding for them. This song works for each of them in a different form and context.
Octavia and Steven/Sign
“Isn’t it “A”” - PinnoccioP
The arguments of all time
Honse- I mean Sophro
“Puzzle” - CMYK, CircusP
He’s just here to help. No notes.
Miscellaneous Others/Not big enough for their own section
Lantern
“Lantern” - Undertale OST
…self explanatory. The song’s vibes fit, too, I imagine this plays in his scenes.
“The Other One Left” - VaneLily
Half due to the “I just want a loving father” line. Gender’s wrong, again, but otherwise the lyrics fit.
Seer
“Seer’s Theme” - Cindy
I literally cannot outdo her own theme. It’s just too good. I listen to it randomly just because I like it so much /gen.
Sigil
“I’m Just Ken” - Barbie Movie Soundtrack
this is mostly a joke but come ON you think that guy doesn’t feel a little overshadowed by his GODDESS FIANCÉE?!
“Business Man” - Tom Cardy
Okay so this one takes some explaining because I imagine sigil walking into Dialtone’s place to spy and Insanity ruining everything and shooting everyone. It makes absolutely no sense but it’s funny in my head so here we are.
My Characters, yes this is gonna be last
Dusk
“Ultimate Senpai” - PinocchioP
A song about being overly pressured and stuff? Yeaaaaah.
“Sis Puella Magia!” - Madoka Magica Soundtrack
….Pretty. That’s it.
Aoki
“Decretum” - Madoka Magica Soundtrack
The reason I gave him a violin.
Alpenglow
“Yume Yume” - DECO*27
I have an ENTIRE ANIMATIC for chip and alpen with this song in my head
Lemonade
“Viva La Vida” - Coldplay
lore. Hehe.
Yume
“What are Children Made Of?” - PinnoccioP
This kid’s childhood has been ruined and boy is processing that hard.
”Everything about Animals” - PinocchioP
an absolute fever dream of a song that she would absolutely sing about animals. And how cool they are. And ohhhh look commentary on the state of humanity
Switchboard
“Kom Susser Tod” - Astrophysics
Idk it doesn’t fit all too well but the mix of utter hopelessness and eurobeat techno is just hercore
TAOCC as a whole
“Something Rotten!/Make an Omelette” - Something Rotten Soundtrack
WHEN I TELL YOU I HAVE AN ENTIRE. FREAKING. ANIMATIC-
”Your Silver Garden” - Madoka Magica OST
I do not know the lyrics literally at all but I could see an OP for TAOCC with this song

havign artist block rn but i have an interaction in mind relating to my characters and @bakawitch 's ballet box so i'll just write it out.
[Scene: Adrien has just finished infodumping about Swan Lake to Claudia and the kwamis, (Plagg, Karra, Odile & Odette)] Claudia: Well if you like these ones so much why don't you use them? Adrien: [sputtering] Psh- No, of course not! The White and Black Swans are traditionally feminine roles! I would be blaspheming on Tchaikovsky's work, not to mention the rich cultural tradition of Ballet as a whole! [Comedic Beat. In the background, it can be seen that Odile and Odette very clearly could not give less of a shit about this] Adrien: What I wiiill say, though, Claudia— In keeping with upholding Tchaikovsky's work, you can only choose a name that is within the actual ballet. Claudia: Wh?! Bitch— I can't share names with Odile! You don't do that! Did you ever go around in your little cat costume calling yourself "Plagg"? Adrien: [about to pull his copy of the transcribed score of Swan Lake and a 600 page book documenting the entire ballet's production off his bookshelf] And that's a whole different story! I'm just saying that Tchaikovsky would've wanted— [The scene shifts focus to Odile and Odette, watching these two idiots argue over proper naming conventions. Karra, Coyote of Deception, floats in from stage left] Karra: [pulls pigeon feather out between her teeth, puts on the widest tooth-baring grin imaginable] Birds, huh? What's this, you two have a twin thing going on or something? [Odile stares Karra down with the force of a thousand suns] Odile: [In a thick Russian accent] What is this, you have 'friendless mongrel thing' going on? [vine boom distraught coyote] [Out of focus, Odette chastises her 'sister'/counterpart/whatever for being so harsh, but the main point is that Karra is a friendless loser idiot]

Good day to everyone in the Napoleonic segment of Tumblr once again! 🌺
I humbly assume, there is no bad timing for some “Napoleonic-related-game-world-news”, so here we are. :)
Won’t describe my own gaming history as it’s another long story to tell… However, I will make a remark that I am a gamer who have enjoyed such leisure activity on many platforms - PSP-gaming, computer gaming, console gaming, phone gaming as well. Speaking of the latter, there is one game in particular that fascinates me till nowadays. It’s called “Time Princess” and it is, in a nutshell, an interactive novel with the core dress-up mechanics.
The game’s name says it all: there is a main heroin who gains the ability to relive countless stories through, pretty much, any writing source available in this world. Those stories are based on different historical epochs, mythologies, classical literature pieces and so on, and so forth. The sole requirement for each story is straight-forward simple: the main character should be… female! That’s why there are some stories based on world famous classics where the main characters went through gender swap: for example, not “Romeo and Juliette” but “Romy and Julius”; a “Swan Lake” story where prince Siegfried becomes princess, while Odette and Odile are known as Aldous and Audwin. These changes are looking not that bad, actually, and are quite enjoyable during the play through.
There are also many original stories set in modern or future times, several interpretations of famous women’ biographies (which I would never discuss on serious terms as there’s too little left from the real-life historical personalities: their characters - as well as actual historical events - go through such drastic changes for the plot’s sake that it’s sometimes impossible to recognise them at all) and classical literature adaptations with canonical female characters aka “Phantom of the Opera” or “Little Women”.
Still, I’m here to speak about Napoleonic era as always. And in “Time Princess” there are no stories based on that memorable epoch (yet, dare I say - since I’m starting to believe that there is a possibility). What made me mention this lovely game on the Napoleonic agenda, then? Well, big thanks to one specific in-game event which comes to an end soon!
In short, it was an ambitious collaboration between “Time Princess” and one of the most famous museums in the world - Musée du Louvre in all its timeless beauty. There were many wonderful activities, mini-games and other stuff to do but the best gift - best gift for all the Napoleonic era lovers, of course - came in the very end of it.
Thus, behold la grande finale (or is it better to say “das große Finale”? 😉) together with us: the magnificent set of clothes inspired by coronation robes of Marie Louise, erzherzogin of Austria, empress of the French! 🇦🇹🇫🇷🎉
Tumblr media
The full set is called “Midnight Vienna” and makes an obvious accent on Marie Louise origins and heritage. The descriptions of each piece of clothing are unbelievably pathetic and romantic, while the historical foundation is… well… How do I put it mildly? Many fellow enjoyers of Napoleonic history would be probably crying bloody tears over that one-sided interpretation of martyrdom and excessive exaltation.
But, despite all the cringy aspects, I believe the designers and software developers made a very good job in keeping overall resemblance to the classic silhouette many love and adore!
Just look at all those wonderful details: jewellery, embroidery, simple but gracious ornaments…
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It’s also noted in game that the dress itself was “freely inspired by an engraving of Empress Marie-Louise by Louis-Adolphe Portier” which is, of course, preserved in the department of graphic arts in the Musée du Louvre.
In the end, I was able to find the original engraving which was mentioned - I’m attaching it as well. 🌺
Tumblr media
And even though I’m very, very sceptical of any biographical adaptations which may come after such lovely representation, it’s undoubtedly nice to see the reminders of Napoleonic era beauty in any spheres of our everyday lives. 😌

Chapter One
Tumblr media
A/N: No real triggers this time!!  WC: 1.9k Chapter 1:
“So every person in this book is a fairy tale character?” Emma Swan says to her ten-year-old son.
The boy had introduced himself as Henry, had brought his mother to Storybrooke. Of course, Emma had given Henry up for adoption when she gave birth to him.  But to have her son seek her out made Emma uncomfortable. He had come to her claiming to be the savior of the storybook world. Henry spun a tale about a curse and how all of the characters of the Enchanted Forest were stuck in a town called Storybrooke, Maine.
Henry had with him a brown leather storybook that was thick but didn’t appear to be heavy. Henry seemed to carry around with no problem. One thing Emma found off when they arrived into town was the clock tower. As she observed it, she couldn’t help take note of how it never seemed to move. She led Henry back to his mother’s house. Henry’s adoptive mother, Regina Mills, was the mayor of the town. Henry claimed she was the Evil Queen from the story Snow White. Emma found this silly. Then again, Emma wasn’t one for fairytales anyway. Fairytales are for kids.
Inside Granny’s Diner, Sam Winchester sat inside waiting for his brother Dean. Granny’s was usually closed at night since Granny went to work at her bed and breakfast in the mornings, but Ruby was always there at night to serve the night owls who couldn’t sleep.
Ruby wasn’t the only one working the night shift. She worked with Y/N Y/L/N. Hardly anyone saw  Y/N working in the morning. This usually led to rumors that Y/N was hiding something.  The story was Y/N stayed locked in Rowena’s shop.
Rowena MacLeod was a private woman. However, she was a businesswoman, a loan shark, if you will. Rowena was very good at getting what she wanted through these tactics. She would let her client borrow money with the promise of paying it back fairly and on time. However, many clients don’t read the fine print in her contract.  Resulting in them having to pay double or triple what they borrowed. Rowena had helped Sam and Dean’s parents with a large sum of money to keep their business, Winchester Mechanics, afloat. Leaving their two sons, Sam and Dean, to foot the bill. Dean paid her as much as he could, but with not many people coming or going from Storybrooke, business was slow.
This left Sam to find a way to help Dean find a way to help pay Rowena back too. But he wasn’t having great success either. Sam had started working in Mr. Gold’s Pawn shop until he found himself interested in Law. Under Mr. Gold’s tutelage, Sam had become well versed in the laws created by the town council. This led him to also find work in the Sheriff's office as a prosecutor. Often being a rival for his own boss at the Pawn Shop. It only made Mr. Gold admire Sam more.
“Ruby, can you please help them?” Y/N begged, trying to hold back an eye-roll at the two men that walked in together, sitting across from one another. Having a conversation amongst themselves and trying to not get in an argument, again, over the amount of money they owed to Rowena. Their next payment was due within the week, and they didn’t have the funds.
“Sorry, Duckling, it's your turn. I helped them the other day.” She says, giving her a sentimental look.
Ruby had been watching Y/N and Sam’s exchanges cringing internally whenever they walked in the door, knowing Y/N would try and pass her along to either herself or Granny. Ruby heard rumors about why Y/N and Sam had disagreements, but their arguments were getting harsher with each passing day.
Y/N scoffed, rolling her eyes, grabbing her order pad, heading over to greet Sam and Dean.
“Evening, Y/N,” Dean says pleasantly.
Sam muttered under his breath a greeting, and it sounded like he muttered a nickname only her friends gave her, earning a glare from Y/N in Sam’s direction.
“What is it now, brains?” Y/N says. “Too buried in your debt to Rowena to speak louder and call me a name in front of my face?”
Dean sighed. Here they go again. “Just our usual if you would please,” he says, trying to cut the tension between the two.
Y/N nods glaring at Sam before she heads back to the kitchen.
“You didn’t need to butt in like that,” Sam scoffed. “I had it completely under control.”
“Oh sure, that’s why you and Y/N seem to fight or have some sort of disagreement every time we come in here?” Dean huffed,  “Who knows whatever the hell happens when you bump into her while she’s alone at Rowena’s,” Dean sassed,  “Oh wait, you’re too busy working at Gold’s shop, fighting for a chance to work a case in his place, or at the jail with Graham,” the elder brother snapped calmly.
“Says the man who works in a shop with no cars to work on,” Sam snapped back, “How’s Amaya? Did you ever fulfill your promise to help her out?
“You keep that bitch out of this,” Dean growled. “I’ll figure something out. For now, I’m gonna see if I can get a second job somewhere.”
“What do you mean? What other job could you get here? Think Granny can hire you as a short-order cook? At least she gets business!”
“It’s something to get the debt paid back to Rowena, Sam,” Dean muttered as Y/N brought out their meals. Both were polite, and their bickering died down, and they went back to talking about their days. As uneventful as they were, they had a lot to talk about.
Y/N sighed as she went back behind the counter, “Ruby, I’m gonna head to bed. Dawn wake-up call comes early.” She says with an eye roll.
“Goodnight, Duckling,” Ruby says, smiling kindly to her, “I’ll clean up.”
===========
Enchanted Forest
“Dean, is target practice really necessary?” Sam says, looking at him. “I need to be looking for Odette, not shooting powdered arrows over at the servants’ asses.”
“And what are you gonna do when you can’t hit your mark?” Dean questioned, “What of Odette needs saving from some Ogres, and you miss?”
“Is that before or after the fact that you're catching fireflies at all hours of the night?” Sam asks, crossing his arms in front of his chest. “Are they for you or to feed the frog that follows you around and hides on your dresser?”  he snaps, glaring at the older brother.
“I do not go out at night to catch fireflies for Amaya,” Dean scoffs, “besides, she goes out and catches her own meals.”
Rolling his eyes, Sam grabbed his red powdered covered arrows, game face on. Assuming the probability that Dean would let him win, again. Sam took an arrow from his quiver, sliding it into place. Pulling back the string once he nocked it, aiming it at his first mark, the butler, Crowley. Whom the brothers affectionately dressed up as a brown moose. The arrow left the nocking point, hitting its destined target in the center of his rounded ass.
“Hey!” Crowley muttered, rolling his eyes. He brushed off the powder as he glared at both of the brothers.
Dean was finding this amusing. The exercise was primarily for Sam. Why couldn’t he have fun too?
Just as Dean was about to take his shot, Castiel, the head advisor to his father, walked out onto the grounds. He intended to stop the game before it fully began. “Your Highness?”
Startled by the sudden interruption, Dean whipped around,  the arrow released from where it was nocked, hitting Castiel square into his chest. Before he could even react, a second followed by a third engulfed Cas in a powder of blue.
“If you children are quite finished,” he huffed, dusting the powder off himself, “my liege, you have a visitor. Something about a poisonous toad needing collecting?”
Dean fired one more arrow before stalking towards Castiel, “it better not be a waste of my time. My brother and I are training.”
“Training for a lost cause if you ask me, Sir,” Crowley says, observing the body language of his employer. “For all, we know the Princess is dead as well, just like her father. God rest his soul.” He adds, making the sign of the cross.
Sam’s head turned quickly at the Butler’s words echoed in his ear. Eyes flashed in anger, rushing over towards the pair. “Take it back! You don’t get to talk about Odette like that!”
“Forgive me, Samuel. However, I truly believe this to be a fool's errand,” Crowley says, standing closer to the trio gathered in the middle of the courtyard.
“I will find her, Crowley,” the younger prince declared, “I have to find her.”
Shaking his head, Dean followed Castiel inside to handle the visitor.
Needing an actual outlet for his anger, Sam walked with a fast pace over to the stables. The staff tended to the horses, but Sam usually liked taking care of his mare. It gave him a sense of responsibility.
Sam’s mare, Onyx, was a beautiful black Friesian. Her height was just above 18 hands, given his six foot four stature, she was just as tall as he was. Sam was okay with that though. Grabbing a body brush, Sam slowly brushed out her black coat. It had become dirty from the loose dirt flying around.
Meanwhile, as the sun set on the edge of the trees in the forest, a beautiful white swan flew across the canopy. Odette had grown accustomed to the dawn and the dusk. Knowing she had to be on the lake’s surface as the moon touched it before she would become a woman again.
As per her usual routine, Odette flew over Winchester Castle. Wondering if Sam would be looking for her. Who was she kidding? Sam only wanted to marry her for her beauty. Prince Samuel Winchester didn’t care about her.
Dusk approached, the swan moving to make her graceful descent down into the crystal colored water. “Was wondering if you were gonna be on time tonight dearie.” Rowena says, hands placed on her hips. Odette gave Rowena as much of a glare as a swan possibly could. The princess was always on time and never late. The other party that was never late was Rowena’s incompetant son Crowley.
“Evening Mother, Odette,” he greets, giving his mother a nod of acknowledgement. Crowley’s appearances had begun to be a routine over the past week. Rowena’s son came every evening, giving Rowena the opportunity to ask her the same proposition in order to remove the curse. Marrying her son.
Much to the annoyance of Rowena, Odette answered her the same as she had every single time she’d asked. One single word was her reply, but not the one the sorceress was looking for.
“No.”
“Oh for the love of Dagda” She scoffed, rolling her eyes skyward. Eyes focused back on the maiden that stood before her. Hair glowing in the shimmering moonlight. “Need I remind you, I placed this curse on you, and I can just as easily reverse it. All you need to do, is agree to marry my dear Fergus. Once you're wed, I can give you all the riches a Princess could ask for.”
“Far better than the Winchester’s that's for sure.” Crowley adds as a comment.
“I’d rather be a swan over marrying your childish, pathetic son.” Odette snapped.
“That can be arranged.” Rowena snapped, allowing the princess to mull over her choices.

BARBIE MOVIE HEADCANONS
why am i doing this? oh, believe me, i am asking myself the same question. i have no idea but every time i watch barbie movies i also think of how sandrine would appreciate them and review them and yeah i guess this counts as character development and what not.
top five favourite movies
barbie and the magic of pegasus (ice skating, cute baby polar bear, kind of gay for the queen)
barbie as princess and the pauper (the SONGS the story the animation the everything, hands down the best barbie movie in the entire universe with swan lake as a close second)
barbie as the island princess (very adorable baby elephant, friendships are more important in the end than a semi pointless male interest no offense antonio but yeah full offense go away and colonize another island who cares)
barbie & the diamond castle (one word: LESBIANS)
barbie: a fashion fairytale (the terrible french accents deserve a special mention they made her laugh)
top five least favourite movies
barbie: videogame hero (it’s too high tech for this actual grandma)
barbie presents: thumbelina (the animation of the small creatures is very scary like their heads? are too big)
barbie fairytopia: the magic of the rainbow (they should have made a spin off about lesbian mermaid nori instead this was pointless laverna just go get lost for fucks sake)
barbie in the pink shoes (very confusing)
barbie: spy squad (she pays allegiance to totally spies, the ultimate female spies)
top five favourite characters
blair willows / princess sophia > princess charm school (the whole storyline is a dream: she was a waitress, won a contest to study at the royal school & ends up being the lost princess everyone thought died years ago.
annika > magic of pegasus (brave, bold & looks good in lilac)
clara > the nutcracker (she’s the sugarplum fairy, enough said)
viveca > three musketeers (very lesbian, very fashun, very hot)
sandrine > mermaid princess (for obvious reasons, also represents sandrine’s whole ‘i fall for people i can’t have’ since barbie sandrine has a lot of attitude and seems very hard to approach)
top five least favourite characters (excluding villains)
prince louis > three musketeers (sexist dumb pointless no chemistry with the main character whatsoever go get lost in your hot air balloon and complain it’s hard to be a prince bc you can’t talk to birds anymore)
the twins love interests > diamond castle (forced heterosexuality is boring make it stop)
janessa > 12 dancing princesses (she collects bugs BUGS!!!!!! nope not allowed)
eden starling > a christmas carol (great redemption arc and explanation of why she is pure evil but still, she gets a 0/10 for not being sweet like we get it eden you can sing and so does sandrine and yet she doesn't act like a diva)
stacie > great puppy adventure / great puppy chase (she's way too into sports child just chill and watch some cartoons give everyone a break pls)
best romantic relationships
liana & alexa > diamond castle (they live together they sing love songs to each other they sell flowers they find matching gems and make engagement necklaces together they lose their joy once they are separated, the whole movie is about liana wanting to date the muse melody and have a throuple and alexa wanting to keep their couple closed and alexa and liana finds out they don’t need anything else to be happy other than each other and this is gay)
odette & the fairy queen > swan lake (i feel like sandrine would call the fairy daddy for some reason, and odette bakes and dances? nice. swans are cute, good opportunity to say look at all those chickens)
rosella & luciana > island princess (full offense to antonio go back on your boat and let the two women in charge of your kingdom)
elina & nori > fairytopia: mermaidia (they “fight” for the same ugly merman but they end up having more chemistry together i stan! also nori becomes a better person and elina makes great sacrifices for her so it's perfect good girlfriends content)
geneviève & derek > 12 dancing princesses (listen LISTEN LISTEN this is prime romance, derek is attracted to geneviève, the misfit of the family despite all her other sisters being absolutely gorgeous, he gives her time, he shows his affection through small attentions, his own parrot ships them like this is goals and he does anything he can to make the whole family happy and to save them putting his love for gigi second)
in brief: sandrine your bisexuality is showing
(i disagree with the best top 5 especially but for the rest i feel like we would agree on most of this, especially about prince louis I HATE HIM WITH A BURNING PASSION like ;;;;; sir you are so flat and you have 0 personality and french monarchy? i don’t stan ~ also here’s the link to the barbie wiki page if you want context or u can ask me i’m a connoisseur phd in barbie movies i bought a barbie for my birthday does it validate my knowledge SHE’S LIKE “SWEET ORCHARD” THEME THAT IS SO ADORABLE idk what i will name her? thinking of cinnamon bc she comes with a basket of apples)
for reference:
gif 1 = liana & alexa from barbie & the diamond castle
gif 2 = annika & aiden from barbie and the magic of pegasus
gif 3 = princess annelise & erika from barbie as princess and the pauper
gif 4 = elina & nori from barbie fairytopia: mermaidia
gif 5 = geneviève & derek from barbie and the 12 dancing princesses
gif 6 = odette & the fairy queen from barbie of swan lake

They split the bill for dinner, and then Claire let Jamie take her hand and lead her across the street. Lights in the fountain sparked reflections across all three buildings at Lincoln Center.
“I’ve never been here before,” she breathed.
Jamie pulled her tightly against his side, watching people bustle about the complex. “I’m glad to give this to you,” he whispered, kissing her temple.
Something surged within her – but Jamie was already tugging at her hand, striding toward the building at the back of the square.
“Sometimes I’m sorry that I didn’t see the original Metropolitan Opera House, before this complex was built by Robert Moses in the 60s.” Jamie’s voice was strong, quiet, as they approached the theater. “But I do have to say – there’s something very special about this place.”
Once inside, he went directly to the Will Call.
“Two for tonight’s performance, please. Last name is Fraser.”
And then she stared down at her ticket.
 “Swan Lake,” she whispered.
“Of course. I told you it’s one of my favorites. But I didn’t tell you that my sister Jenny is dancing in it tonight.”
Stunned, Claire met his smiling eyes.
“How else do you think I could have afforded these tickets?”
 --
Walking up the curving, red carpeted staircase to their seats was like something out of a dream.
“Some people say that orchestra seating is the best,” Jamie explained as they carefully walked down the sloping aisle to their seats at the front of the balcony. “But I like sitting up here – you can see the entire stage, plus the musicians.”
Heavy gold curtains draped across the stage. Claire watched individual musicians warm up in the pit, practicing their scales, laughing with each other.
“How long has your sister been with the ballet company?”
“About ten years now – she’s worked her way up to be what they call a principal dancer. And one of only a handful of dancers in the New York City ballet who are actually from New York City. The company truly seeks the best talent from all around the world.”
Claire thumbed through her Playbill – Jamie was right. Dancers hailed from Kiev, and Buenos Aires, and Paris, and Moscow, and Los Angeles.
 “I don’t see a Fraser,” she frowned.
Jamie’s finger pointed out a smiling, dark-haired woman. “Janet Murray. She’s married to my best friend Ian – we all went to school together. She’s one of the only married dancers.”
“Is Ian a dancer as well?”
“God, no!” Jamie laughed. “He’s a police officer. Passed the sergeant’s exam earlier this year.”
Claire shook her head, then squinted at Jenny’s photograph. “I’d expected she’d be red-haired, like you.”
“She takes after Dad’s side of the family – they were all much darker in complexion. I take after Mom’s side.”
She turned the page. “Jenny is dancing Odette. Is that the main character?”
“Yes. She’s danced in this ballet many times, but only this season she’s started dancing Odette.”
Claire set down her Playbill, and took both of Jamie’s hands. “Thank you for taking me here. It’s – it’s all so much more than I ever could have expected.”
He raised one of her hands to his lips, and kissed it ever so gently. “Thank you for allowing me to take you here. It’s…I’ve never had anyone to share this with. Who would appreciate it.”
 He flushed.
“Did you ever dance ballet, Jamie?”
“I tried – but I don’t have the coordination for it. I’d rather be drawing.”
“So – what do you draw?”
“Whatever I see around me. I like charcoal – it’s so simple, so freeing. Just a few strokes and life begins to take shape.”
She crossed one leg, rubbing her boot against his. “Anything in particular that you like to draw?”
“People. Faces. I drew a lot of dancers when Jenny and I were growing up – I had my Degas phase. It’s very hard to capture movement accurately.”
“Would you like to draw me?”
Quickly Jamie glanced at his watch, then fished around in his jacket pocket, producing a small rectangular metal case.
“That looks like what my uncle would put his cigarettes in.”
He lay the case on the armrest between them, and carefully flicked it open. “It used to be something like that.” He turned it around so that Claire could see inside – six neat rectangles of chalk, black and white and four shades of gray. “Now I never leave home without it.”
He flipped through his Playbill, removed the paper insert announcing the casting change for the night, and placed it, blank side up, on his knees. He turned in his seat, balancing carefully, facing her. Began to draw.
Suddenly self-conscious, Claire swallowed, feeling her cheeks flush.
“Hold still,” he whispered, eyes flicking between her face and the paper.
She did, mind racing, watching as he rotated the paper, smudged it a bit with the pads of his fingers, then smiled once it was all done.
“Here.” He held it out between them.
It was her, all right – rendered in the most delicate of lines. With just three sweeps of chalk he had captured her brow, cheeks, nose, chin – and smile.
 Simple. Stunning.
She swallowed, fishing in her purse for a tissue. “Here – I didn’t see anything in that case to clean your hands with.”
Tentatively she took the drawing, studying it as he wiped his hands.
“It’s amazing how quickly you can do that.”
“It’s easy when I have a beautiful subject.”
She closed her eyes. Knowing he could see her hands shake.
 “What are we doing, Jamie?”
“We’re going to watch the ballet. I’ll hold you close to me, and tell you the story, and hope against hope that you’ll continue to open your heart to me. And then when it’s done, I’ll introduce you to my sister. Maybe we’ll go for a drink. And I’ll see you back home to Adso.”
His warm, warm hand carefully rested on her knee. “I hope that one day, you’ll see this drawing and remember every moment – every second – of this night.”
She swallowed. “I can’t believe I found you.”
Her hand found his. Carefully he slipped the drawing into his Playbill, set it on the floor, and enveloped her hand in between both of his. “We found each other, Claire.”
Then a chime sounded, and the light fixtures began ascending up to the ceiling, and they settled into their seats – Jamie’s strong arm around her back, his hand safe between both of Claire’s.
He kept his promises that night.
Whispering the story unfolding on the stage:
That’s Prince Siegfried, and his overbearing mother who tells him he must choose a bride at the royal ball. He’s upset that he can’t marry for love. His buddies try to cheer him up, but it’s no use. As evening falls, Siegfried sees a flock of swans flying overhead, and suggests they go on a hunt to clear his mind.
Now here we pick up the story a bit later – and we see Siegfried lost at the lakeside. A flock of swans lands – and just as he aims his bow, one of them transforms into Odette. I can say Odette, and not Jenny, because to be honest I can’t recognize her with her hair and makeup and costume. You can see how terrified she is – but Siegfried explains that he won’t harm her. She tells him that she and the other swans are the victims of a curse from an evil sorcerer. By day they are swans, and by night, beside this enchanted lake, they regain their human form.
Odette tells him that the spell can only be broken if a man who has never loved before, swears to Odette that he will love her forever.
Then the sorcerer appears, and Siegfried wants to kill him – but Odette persuades him not to, for she fears that if the sorcerer dies, she will be cursed to live under the terrible spell forever.
Odette and Siegfried fall in love, that night by the lake – and as dawn breaks, she and her companions turn into swans again.
Now here we are the following evening at the costume ball – where Siegfried has been ordered to find a wife. Here are the girls his mother wants him to marry. And look – here is the sorcerer, in disguise, with his daughter who is disguised to resemble Odette. Siegfried gives her attention, thinking she is Odette.
And now we see Odette appear in her human form, trying desperately to warn Siegfried – but he doesn’t see her. And he proclaims to the court that he will marry the sorcerer’s daughter. But then the sorcerer shows Siegfried a magical vision of Odette – and he realizes she’s not there. He flees the castle, hurrying back to the lake to find her.
Odette is distraught. Siegfried appears and apologizes. Odette realizes she can never have the life with him that she wants, so she chooses to die. Siegfried chooses to die with her, and they leap into the lake. This breaks the sorcerer’s spell over the other swans. He dies. And in the last scene of the ballet, the swan maidens watch Siegfried and Odette ascend to heaven together.
The orchestra rose to a crashing crescendo, followed by a sliver of silence. The crowd rose to its feet with thundering applause.
Claire turned to Jamie, tears streaking down her face. She caressed his cheek and pulled him close for a long, long, sweet kiss.
“I’ve never loved before, Claire,” he rasped against her lips. “But I hope – ”
“I only want to be under your spell, Jamie,” she whispered, pulling him back for more.

YOU’VE  HEARD  ABOUT  HER,    HAVEN’T  YOU?      THE  NEVER  WHO  DOESN’T  WANT  HER  STORY  ---    JOY  OF  FOXWOOD.
hey remember chaddick’s portrait? you do now.
joy is the brainchild of me and one wretched teapot so this time there was less thinking involved on my part. / @wretchedteapot i’m stealing ur content.
didn’t mean we didn’t have to do some serious mental gymnastics though.
(just give us ages already gdi)
so yeah, JOY!!! she’s an absolute sweetheart, befitting of her name but also she rarely feels actual joy!!!! because of her mountain of issues!!
she’s the daughter of odile / the black swan from swan lake.
and she’s basically a never, but she doesn’t want to be because HELLO has anyone ever thought about the system in sge .... like you are literally killing your classmates. why isn’t anyone breaking over being destined to die in a very bad way.
my canon now in my canon we break the school into ruins!!! bye!! nada!! just rocks and rubble!!!
we’re putting in a lil bit of social reform into her character!!!
her full name is joy tiane we’re not pulling a soman here right now.
around 16-18. she’s a bit older than the main cast of sge and probably a year ahead. the prime time for a mid-life crisis!1!!1!!
she’s an only child and lives in foxwood alongside her family.
technically a never. but it too nice to be accept as one but too evil to be accepted by evers f.
first on her mountain of issues is the fact that she’s a splitting image of the daughter of odette / the swan queen, albeit more akin to a darker twin. while the other girl has light golden hair and fair darling blue eyes, joy has stark black hair and dark DARK brown eyes.
girl doesn’t even have an appearance to call her own. whew! issues.
is of asian descent, very willowy, lean and tall - a ballet dancer physique.
her hair is quite long but very straight. slightly choppy at the ends but generally looks very silky and nice.
but has really long lean muscular legs and is quite tall, 168cm.
her vibes are cottagecore bisexual who doesn’t want to be evil but also has her very evil grandpa and mother breathing down her neck!!
she’s a very sweet girl, enjoys making pies and cake but breaks down once a week cause she doesn’t want to die a gruesome death and accept her destiny!!!
joy: i made pie :D evers: TO POISON US WITH???????? HOW DARE joy: not again.
neighbours and childhood friends with the gremlaine brothers. they hang out together and joy often writes back to them in school.
when she goes shes like i will send everything back and i will tell you ev er y t h i ng
joy: ur my only friend here chaddick chaddick: dies joy: tf am i supposed to do now?
joy very much accepted to go to the school for bad because fuck home fuck mom bad memories. i only have one month worth of good memories here it’s not worth it.
has mommy issues. her mom is very much a huge pusher for joy to do bad things and be villainous when joy literally only wants to bake cake.
her grandfather is really pleased with a granddaughter who looks exactly like odette’s kid!!!! his scheme isn’t over yet just wait.
very soft just radiates sunny vibes, but the evers don’t like nevers and nevers don’t like soft babies like her.
can get REALLY prickly though, especially when you make her mad. she is literally going to wage a war against you. you can literally feel her murderous bad vibes.
cold shoulder queen. doesn’t give a fuck about you if you spite her lmao.
[insert name here]: HELP I CAN’T SWIM joy: your point? [insert name here]: I’M DROWNING joy: and im reading
she doesn’t like it when her villain instincts take over but its kind of a part of her and she can’t deny her blood (as much as she’d like it).
joy: why does magical violence have to be the last resort. can’t it be like. the fifth.
dances ballet!! just a dancer. can’t do any other sport to save her life. sings sometimes.
as a result just walks around in ballet shoes 24/7. she used to take them off but now she’s just like. yeah.
joy: breaks in her pointe shoes the evers that are passing through: oh my god she’s murdering someone or something. the nevers on the floor beneath: oh my god what kind of never DANCES??
cracks her neck and back a lot. it’s horrifying for the evers she’s around lmaoo.
sometimes ~ waddles ~ like duckies (OR SWANS HAHAHA) because she walks with her feet turned out. she can turn back in, she’s just too tired to.
sprawls a lot. chairs are her worst enemy.
going thru a serious identity issue someone help the poor girl.
her magic specialty is curses but she absolutely fails uglification because her blood curse prevents her from looking any different from the daughter of odette.
lives in tower vice. has a horrible relationship with her dorm mates but wbk.
has prosopagnosia / face blindness. it’s not too bad but she’s awful with remembering faces and it takes very long to remember a face.
ironic considering her mother’s story lol. but yes! if you suddenly change your hair joy probably has no idea who you are.
also why she rarely calls people by their name.
also comes with a healthy dose of anxiety and coming off as rude or uncaring.
that’s why she always wears a red bow in her hair, cause she’s not going to recognise herself in the mirror if she doesn’t. looks in the mirror and goes who’s that bitch.
when you wanna mix things up a bit and wear a different colour bow but then you don’t recognise yourself anymore.
probably introduced herself to the brothers four times in a span of two months. literally cannot tell them apart most of the time because they all looking the fucking same.
joy: hey there’s a new kid next door :D the kid: is actually three similar looking guys joy: now hold on a minute.
joy with people she likes: 🔮🌹💖🌺💖🌹🔮 joy with people she doesn't like: 💔💢🔨⚔️ 🔨 💢 💔

👉👈 all the barbie movie asks 🥺🥺
Ahhhh!!!!! Okay, y’all ready for this??? XD
Favorite Barbie film? Wait, I have to choose one of my babies??? Well 12 Dancing Princesses was my favorite growing up. Princess and the Pauper will always have a special place in my heart of course. I think Mermaid Tale is definitely up there, it’s really good, plus I just love mermaids! XD But recently my favorite is either Dolphin Magic or Rock n’ Royals, I keep rewatching them as comfort movies :)
Favorite heroine/main character? More decisions?? I have anxiety, I can’t decide on things! XD But hm... I think surprisingly Alexa from Barbie and the Secret Door? I love so many of the Barbie characters but Alexa is just so relatable as an introvert who would rather just stay inside and read/write instead of dealing with being social! XD
Favorite Barbie film song? I mean, “To Be a Princess” (both from the original and from Princess and the Popstar) is always a classic--I mean, hell, all the songs from Princess and the Pauper are GOLD. “Life Is a Fairytale” from Fashion Fairytale is catchy as hell and will absolutely get stuck in my head for hours! “Gotta Get to Camp” and pretty much any song from Rock n’ Royals will always get me up and moving. Oh, and “What’s Gonna Happen” from Secret Door is probably why that movie is so high up on my list!
Favorite Barbie film dance scene? Anything from 12 Dancing Princesses but I love the fun camp aesthetic of “Got to Get to Camp”, gives me some very Camp Rock vibes which I love! :)
Favorite Barbie couple? I mean, to be fair I don’t think most of my ships are canon... ^^; Probably the closest thing I have is Ken and Barbie from the Dreamhouse Adventures series but technically they’re not a couple yet... Doesn’t mean I can’t dream! They just made Ken so damn adorable and likable--that man ain’t afraid to rock bright pink clothes and I RESPECT that! Plus he’s Barbie’s best friend first and they’re building up their relationship as solid bff’s before romance kinda starts happening which I am SOFT for. But in Dolphin Magic Barbie and Isla are clearly girlfriends by the end, so I’m down for a triad with all three of them :)
Favorite Barbie dress/outfit? ANY of the outfits from Swan Lake--regular gown and then the swan tutu, I DREAMED of having both of those outfits growing up! The peacock dress from Island Princess is a super close followup, though!
Favorite Barbie film male secondary/side character?  Ken from Dreamhouse Adventures, that boy has ALL my love! He’s also pretty great in Life in the Dreamhouse but I’m sorry, Dreamhouse Adventures made me fall in love with that boy <3
Favorite Barbie female secondary/side character? Isla from Dolphin Magic, Erika from Rock n’ Royals (c’mon, she is CLEARLY queer af, have you seen her amazing hair?!!!), and Skipper from Dreamhouse Adventures.
Favorite Barbie film villain? Oh man... I mean. Preminger from Princess and the Popstar is fantastic--other villains WISH they could be as over dramatic and unashamedly villainous as him XD And Duchess Rowena from Twelve Dancing Princesses rivals Mother Gothel, she is just so wonderfully HATEABLE, and she was straight up POISONING the king and she tried to frame his daughters, she is so EVIL and I LOVE her for that!
Favorite Barbie film animal sidekick? Unfortunately I’m not really a fan of the animals in the Barbie movies--sticking fake eyelashes and makeup on every animal just isn’t my thing :/ But probably Wolfie. I love that cat, especially because “The Cat’s Meow” is totally a trans coded song, I stan one trans cat king <3
Favorite Barbie film non dance scene? Ahhhh!!!! So many good choices!!! I think any scene where a character gets to meet a family member they were separated from (Merlia and Ro getting to meet their moms, Annika meeting her sister, Brietta) is a really good scene :) Oh! Also Blair straight up trashing gentrification in Princess Charm School, like Barbie WENT THERE and was not having it with capitalist bullshit!)
Favorite Barbie film quote? “If what you are is a strange you doesn't mean you should change you, only means you should change your point of view.”
Favorite Barbie film friendship? Barbie and Isla! :) But also Barbie and her sisters in Dreamhouse Adventures and in Life in the Dreamhouse.
Do you have any Barbie film ships? I will almost always ship Barbie with her female counterpart and that’s just a fact XD But I think we covered most of this in favorite couples :) OH! But I almost forgot! Frigging Mr. and Mrs. Roberts in Dreamhouse Adventures are GOALS. Like seriously probably the healthiest representation of a married couple I’ve seen in anything--and they’re not perfect, they’re super quirky and they have issues, but they still LOVE each other and COMMUNICATE and genuinely care about their kids and UGH, I could go ON for HOURS if I’m not stopped XD
Saddest Barbie film scene? Dang, I’m blanking on sad scenes but probably when Liana and Alex briefly break up in Diamond Castle. (C’mon, guys. We ALL know they’re totally a couple. They didn’t even try to hide it.)
Most romantic Barbie film scene? Isla and Barbie reuniting :) But I actually really love the dancing scene with Derek and Genevieve in Twelve Dancing Princesses where they have to dance together to get out of the secret world! Oh! And (spoilers alert for anyone who hasn’t watched Princess Adventure yet!) when Ken asks Barbie to dance with him at the end--wasn’t the confession I was hoping for, but still cute!
Funniest Barbie film scene? Anytime Preminger screams is gold XD
Favorite Barbie film blooper? My favorites are TOTALLY from Princess and the Pauper :) Poor Serafina watching the dummy cat getting absolutely trashed and being terrified for her life? Julian busting a move in the middle of “To Be a Princess”? AMAZING.
Favorite Barbie film world? Ahhhh!!!! They’re all so good!!! But any of them with canon mermaids is a world I’d be happy to visit XD
Favorite name? Anneliese, Merliah, Odette
Favorite parents/guardians? Definitely Mr. and Mrs. Roberts from Dreamhouse Adventures :) But Break from Mermaid Tale is totally awesome too, I’d love to have him as a grandfather!
Favorite kids? All of the sisters from Twelve Dancinc Princesses :)
Favorite siblings? Skipper from Life in the Dreamhouse will always be my fave :)
Favorite Barbie film soundtrack? Everything from Princess and the Pauper is a straight up banger, but I DO love the soundtrack of Twelve Dancing Princesses as well--the soundtrack is one of the reasons I love the movie so much! :D
Favorite Barbie film happy ending? Oof, making me choose again! XD Endings of Dolphin Magic, Mermaid Tale, and Rock n’ Royals are my top three I think :)

Film Language: Taking  A look At Black Swan
Tumblr media
Black Swan is an American Psychological horror film directed by Darren Arronofsky. I is based on an original story by Andres Heinz. he film stars Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Babara Hershey, and Winona Ryder. The plot revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky's Swan Lake ballet by the New York City Ballet company. The production requires a ballerina to play the innocent and fragile White Swan, for which the committed dancer Nina (Portman) is a perfect fit, as well as the dark and sensual Black Swan, which are qualities better embodied by the new rival Lily (Kunis). Nina is overwhelmed by a feeling of immense pressure when she finds herself competing for the part, causing her to lose her tenuous grip on reality and descend into madness.
SPOILERS AHEAD
The film opens with a shot of Nina’s feet. she is wearing ballet shoes and the light is white. This establishes her character very early on as it tells us that she is pure, naive and that dancing and ballet is the most important element of her life. I think it’s interesting that this opening scene is also a dream sequence. Nina dreams that she is the Swan Queen so at this point in the film it is but a fantasy and is even interrupted by the nightmarish black swan creature and we are made aware of this through the use of music. It quickens in pace making the situation seem panicked and dire. It could also be said that the fact that the surrounding area is symbolic of Nina’s underlying darkness and her blindness to the reality of the outside world.
youtube
When Nina is walking outside it is always a shot from behind and the camera is slightly shaky. This makes us feel like we’re following Nina in a documentary style film and it makes the whole thing very personal. like we’re their on this journey with her.
Tumblr media
Early on in the film we get introduced to Nina’s foil, Lily. Lily is a stark contrast to Nina’s innocence and naivety. She’s confident and sexually secure.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is where the wardrobe really comes in. Even before this contrast we have a pretty good idea that the costume design is gonna play a huge role because Nina’s scarf looks particularly like a swans plumage. and could be seen as restricting.
Lily wears black and grey throughout the film and rarely wears white, using it as an accent to the black,  most notably with her delicate white feather earrings. Whilst Nina wears mostly white, pale greys and very pale pink. All very delicate colours that preserve her innocence. This carries over in the makeup choices as Lily’s eyeshadow is dark and bold, heavy and Nina’s is light, more natural with hints of glitter.
Tumblr media
The crux of the film is Tchaikofsky’s Swan Lake. Thomas the director of  the dance company has to choose his swan queen but they have to be able to play both Odette and Odile. The white and black swans. The wardrobe choices eludes us to the fact that Lily is the black swan or at least resembles what the black swan is supposed to be.
Nina finds out that she isn’t picked to be the swan queen and goes to confront Thomas who assaults her with a kiss. this is what earns her the role because she retaliates with a bite. After this scene Nina calls her mother and calls her “mommy”  this is a reaction of regression to childhood, perhaps a retreat to a time of safety? I say this because it’s already established that Nina refers to her mother as mom and has her saved as this in her phone. This regression is Nina’s way to deal with this unwanted advancement. But later on in the film we get the impression that her mother is narcissistic as their apartment is littered with self portraits and she resents Nina for ruining her ballet dreams by being born.
Whilst we’re on the subject of childhood I find Nina’s bedroom incredibly interesting.
Tumblr media
The main colour is this incredibly pale pink, almost off-white and it’s cluttered with lacy furnishings and stuffed toys that scream Sanrio aesthetic. Don’t get me wrong I love stuffed toys and I have many at home but within the context of the film and how they’re used here. It’s clear that they are supposed to be this symbol of childhood and childishness.
One time when Nina is walking home she has a visual hallucination.
Tumblr media
She sees herself in a darker attire with darker hair and more confidence as if she’s daring herself to defy and question the inevitable existence of her darker side. This can be seen as foreshadowing to the point in the film where Nina begins to embrace the darkness that’s underlining her innocence.
At one point in the film Lily takes Nina to a club. there’s lots of flashing lights, red lighting. It’s quite intense. Lily offers a skimpy black top to Nina so that she can dress more club appropriate. At first Nina refuses but later we see her wearing it over her white top. This not only shows us that Nina hasn’t fully embraced the darkness but it also marks the start of her transition into the black swan. Lilly also offers Nina a white pill of Ecstasy. Which she takes, albeit with reluctance.
The sex scene is very interesting especially since it was completely fabricated. Lily wore black underwear and Nina wore white underwear. Lily was on top, the more dominating position. Nina was very submissive and and at the end she saw Lily as herself. This tells us that Nina will eventually allow her darker side to take over and dominate what she is now.
Nina actually oversleeps after this night and because she comes in late Lily is named as her alternate. This makes Nina paranoid and is the true catalyst to the decline of her sanity. She also has a visual hallucination of Thomas getting it off with Lily and Thomas turns into the black swan creature we saw a the start of the film.
We can say that this is a wake up call of sorts. She rushes home and gets rid of all her stuffed toys. Literally disposing of the symbols of her childhood and by extension her innocence. She does it quite forcefully too.
youtube
This is a great scene as It’s so unexpected and intense. Beth is the old and forgotten prima who winds up in hospital after a failed suicide attempt. Nina returns the items she stole from her dressing room, one of them boing a small knife, probably a letter opener. Nina hallucinates Beth stabbing her self with the knife. Since Beth represents a future version of Nina we can say that this is foreshadowing that Nina will be her own undoing.
We also get this scene.
youtube
The ballet music is building in the background and is competing with the factitious screams and that her and her mother exchange. She forcefully locks herself away and pulls jagged black feathers out of the self-inflicted scratches on her back. Her eyes are red and intense. and we get a close up shot of them to give us a feeling that she’s looking at us, pleading for help.
This is the night before the show so it’s all getting very intense and we can see that the pressure is getting to Nina. She hallucinates her legs breaking which cause her to fall and bang her head. on her bed. This can be read as her not having a leg to stand on. Or that she’s on her last leg as it were. However you could also say that this is a nod to the idiom “break a leg” which is used to with good luck to someone out of superstition that “ good luck” would be a jinx.
In the final act it’s time for the show. Nina goes on and an is riddled with anxiety which is made worse by the fact that her prince drops her. We get a close up of her knee as it makes contact with the floor to emphasise the importance of this. In a high class ballet production you expect everything to be perfect and run smoothly and Nina knows this so this mistake really plays on her mind.
After this Nina returns to her dressing room to find Lily there, powdering her nose and wearing Nina’s costume for Odile. This is a fight scene of sorts.
youtube
Nina hallucinates Lily as herself but a more dark and confidence version who is determined to take Nina’s place on stage as Odile so, Nina trusts this adversary against the mirror and stabs them with a piece of broken glass. After which they turn back into Lily. Personally I read this as symbolic of Nina killing her anxiety and insecurities and ridding herself of them so she can be free to fullylet go and embrace her darker self.
This is clear in the scene that follows.
youtube
Here we can see right away that Nina is much less rigid and controlled as she was at the start of the film. The dance is her advantage rather than a prison her mother put her in. Nina undergoes metamorphosis into a black swan. It starts at the hands, a symbol that blood is on her hands due to the murder of Lily/her darker counter part. this grey colour travels up Nina’s veins and eventually consumes her arms. Feathers begin to form and her foot work sounds like feathers flapping. Her eyes are red and swan like and her makeup looks like a pair of angular wings. eventually her arms turn to actual wings and her dress grows to fit the rest of her body, drowning it in black. We get a striking shot of of Nina in the finishing pose with two large shadows cast on the bare brick wall. It’s wonderful. Also after this Nina forcefully kisses Thomas which is a parallel to when he kissed her earlier on in the film as this time Nina is the one who is in control and passionate. She’s now the seducer.
After this performance it is revealed that Lily is still alive and Nina actually stabbed herself. In the final part of the play Odette returns and commits suicide by jumping off a cliff but safely onto a mattress. This means Nina has to become Odette again so the film shows her taking the shard of glass out of her wound. she is effectively removing this part of her so she can resume her innocence but as she dances for the last time we learn that this isn’t possible. The wound begins to bleed and stain the white dress representing the underlying issues Nina has and how they are bleeding through into her life. She jumps and we discover that this wound was one of the only things that actually happened to Nina and her final words “I was perfect” fade to white.
I think fading to white is interesting. It represents peace but also vulnerability. Naked and in your face about it. I always get quite tense when I see a character wearing white. most of the time one of three things happen; there’s gonna be blood because it shows up nicely, they’re gonna get married because wedding dresses are normally white and it’s subtle foreshadowing, or they’re going to die, especially if it’s a bloody murder but more importantly because angels and heaven are often associated with white. So having Nina be a white swan in her final costume is very fitting.
Black Swan is an amazing film that probably needs a few watches to really catch everything. it has amazing performances and direction and the costume design and lighting and shot work are just amazing. There are still somethings I didn’t talk about and I know I’ve kind of already spoiled the majority of the film but I really recommend watching it for yourselves.

ONCE  THERE  WAS  A  WRITER  NAMED  DROSSELMEYER  ,   who  had  the  power  to  make  his  stories  come  to  life  .  but  he  died  before  he  could  finish  his  final  tale  ,  the  prince  and  the  raven  ,  leaving  the  two  title  characters  locked  in  an  eternal  battle  .  after  many  years  ,  the  raven  managed  to  break  free  into  the  real  world  ,  and  the  prince  pursued  him  .  to  seal  away  the  raven’s  evil  ,  prince  siegfried  shattered  his  own  heart  with  his  sword  ,  causing  him  to  lose  all  his  memories  and  emotions  .
TLDR;  the  characters  in  princess  tu.tu  live  in  a  town  where  stories  become  reality  and  the  main  cast  in  particular  are  essentially  part  of  a  VERY  loose  interpretation  of  swan  lake  ( with  some  nutcracker  elements  thrown  in  )  .  other  ballets  and  fairy  tales  are  interwoven  with  the  main  storyline  usually  as  a  ‘villain  of  the  week’  subplot  .

kraehe  is  princess  tu.tu’s  version  of  odile  and  she  is  the  daughter  of  the  raven  who  is  the  show’s  answer  to  the  magician  rothbart  . my  interpretation  of  odile  follows  the  general  storyline  of  swan  lake  with  some  added  backstory  and  character  motivations  inspired  by  kraehe’s  own  personal  history  and  experiences  in  the  show  .
rothbart  is  not  odile’s  biological  father  .  rather  she  was  taken  from  her  human  family  as  a  baby  and  raised  as  a  bird  without  knowing about  her  human  percentage  .  this  made  her  childhood  incredibly  difficult  because  she  truly  believed  she  was  rothbart’s  birth  daughter  that  was  somehow  born  into  ‘an  ugly  human  body  ’  unlike  her  father  who  could  change  form  at  will  she  would  always  be  human  first  ,  raven  second  .
as  a  result  of  this  feeling  of  displacement  she  struggled  with  while  coming  into  her  own  she  frequently  bathed  in  raven’s  blood  which  ultimately  resulted  in  her  developing  raven-like  features  as  well  as  very  strong  magic  . in  a  sense this  ritual  was  a  way  of  putting  a  self-imposed  curse  on  herself  which  eventually  became  permanent  .
she  agrees  to  trick  the  prince  into  falling  in  love  with  her  not  for  her  own  satisfaction  or  even  to  best  odette  but  because  rothbart  promises  her  that  he  will  turn  her  into  a  full  raven  if  she  can  manage  to  pull  off  the  act  .
obviously ...  things  do  not  go  as  planned  and  odile  ends  up  genuinely  falling  for  the  prince  .  she  begins  to  embrace  her  human  side  and  in  the  process  learns  that  rothbart  is  not  actually  her  father  and  has  simply  been  grooming  her  in  order  to  use  her  as  a  means  to  obtain  the  throne  .
odile  pleads  with  the  other  ravens  to  depose  rothbart  but  finds  no  allies  among  their  ranks  .  in  a  fit  of  fury  and  anguish  odile  overthrows  him  but  refuses  to  take  her  place  as  leader  of  the  conspiracy  as  she  no  longer  feels  she  belongs  to  the  birds  .
she  lives  a  mostly  exiled  existence  at  the  story’s  close  .  feared  by  humans  and  distrusted  by  ravens  .  she  belongs  to  neither  world  and  now  wanders  the  wood  as  a  fabled  witch  .

🖊️ odie!! 💘
Tropes!
Action Girl: Downplayed as she is currently training and unable to go on active missions.
Affirmative Action Girl: I admit she was made to add a female ninja to the team though I want her to earn her spot rather than to just hand her simply because she's another girl
Aloof Dark Haired Girl: Started out as an aloof teenager due to her past. This slowly fades away through development.
Blonde, Brunette, Redhead: The Brunette to Robin's redhead and Jetta's blonde.
Brainy Brunette: While nowhere near as smart as Jay and Nya, Odette is pretty streetsmart and has a knowledge of old Ninjagan myths.
Character Development: Goes from a cynical and aloof teenager to a more open and hopeful person.
Color Coded Character: Pink if it wasn't obvious enough
Dark and Troubled Past: Lost her parents at a young age and separated from her friends at the orphanage to love with her neglectful and emotionally abusive aunt.
The Empath: Arguably one of her basic yet strongest ability and the first one she truly masters. She is able to feel emotions particularly positive ones.
Foil: To Harumi
- Both lost family and lost their ability to speak fron the trauma. However Harumi regained her voice while Odette was diagnosed with selective mutism.
- Harumi worshipped Garmadon to the point of becoming his "daughter"; Odette despises the man and hopes he drops off the face of the earth.
- Harumi's grief consumed her and led to her committing acts of evil; Odette couldn't even grieve as she had to deal with her horrible aunt.
- Harumi wore a lot of green in the similar fashion to how the ninja's love interests wore corresponding colors, but she pretended to love Lloyd and plotted his downfall. Meanwhile Odie wears her own color and the only green thing she has is her hairclip; she proved herself to be a trustworthy ally and when certain feelings start cropping up hers is actually genuine.
Heart Beat Down: Said to be one of her powers once she gains more experienced. Her Spinjitsu tornado emits pink hearts that can stun the enemy, and she can summon powerful heart-shaped energy attacks
Heterosexual Life Partners: Becomes this with Jetta
Huge Girl, Tiny Guy: As non-Lego humans she is taller than Lloyd
Ironic Name: Her name means "wealthy" in German yet she came from working class family and raised by an aunt very poor in sense with her money.
Kiss Attack: Another basic ability
Love at First Sight: Averted! She and Lloyd do not fall in love and has to build a friendship first before any romantic feelings appear.
Meaningful Name: in spite of the aforementioned she becomes wealthy in the sense that she gains friends and support. She's also named after the main heroine from Swan Lake and is the hero of this story.
Pink Girl, Blue Boy: Played straight with Jay and Zane; same gender version with Nya; somewhat downplayed with Lloyd, Cole and Kai
Pink Means Feminine: Downplayed as she has a few girly qualities but she chose pink as her theme mainly because all the other colors were taken as well as to stand out.
Plucky Girl: Even with all the crap that happened in her life she possesses a bit of determination, eventually gaining the strength to leave her situation.
Satellite Love Interest: I'm trying to avoid this trope by creating her own storylines. The most that symbolizes her connection to Lloyd is her hair clip.
Tsundere: Sometimes behaves like this although definitely without the violent temper often associated with this trope.
Thicker than Blood: With Robin and the other orphans; they retain this after Odie comes back to the city.

Swan Lake Wolfgang/Siegfried overthinking no. I-refuse-to-count-how-many-times-this-stupid-ballet-and-this-even-more-stupid-characters-did-not-let-me-sleep!
Dear @spinmelikeyoumeanit ... this is yet again yours and yours fault only.
(And yes, once I start I physically cannot stop myself, which leads to... err. THIS!)
(I sincerely apologize. I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I’m sorry. Truly.)
Well, I promised, didn’t I? And it literally took me just about a lifetime! (On the other hand – academic life happened. Don’t do postgrad, kids, it’s just not worth it…) (Or maybe just dont try to write a dissertation in a MONTH! FFS!)
One would think I would be over it. That after so many Swan Lakes nothing would have the ability to shake me. That after so many sleepless nights spent thinking over every little think here and there, I would know almost everything, therefore would be prepared for anything thrown at me. And yet here we are! Once again, blown away by Swan Lake of all ballets. I mean… could there be anything more cliché?
However, I already made peace with one thing (and you should probably too, saves lives and all that) and that’s the genius of Nureyev, of his Swan Lake and of the duality of Wolfgang/Rothbart.
As many of you remember, I’m sure (and slightly horrified), even recording of Nureyev’s SL is more than able to put me out of service, to prevent me from living what even the tiniest group of people would call a normal life. Or something. So, what the hell was I thinking when buying the ticket to see the ballet in question live, I have literally no idea. (Well. I have, actually. He may even have a name…) But yes, I did saw Swan Lake with POB live on stage. From the first fucking row, because that’s how extra I have to be. (Yes, my diet consists solely of bread and water since… seems like forever now.) I saw it, I died and that’s about it. However, my being dead is not something anyone would be particularly interested in, so let’s just move to the only thing you (the whole lot of exactly one person) are here for.
I did write a review on said performance. And usually I’m trying to translate them (even though I’m not exactly sure why, because it causes me almost physical pain and at the end I feel endlessly stupid, since I have to search every second word in dictionary, which is slightly pathetic, also I love my Czech sentences too much and with my pitiful knowledge of English I simply cannot make them justice, so they look utterly weird in the end and they deserve better than that), however unlike with my first POB SL review 3 years back this time I’ve decided to just don’t give a shit and dive into the story head first consequences be damned, so I think with writing this thing here I would have everything important covered (i.e. no need for the actual review) (the first half was basically just me showing off my endless knowledge on SL music score, which is plain boring, let’s be real, plus I wrote all that in my first review).
/AN - This is actually longer than the review itself. I think I feel a little bit sick…/
So. Right. Swan Lake.
I’m not gonna pretend there’s anyone else in whom I am more interested than Siegfried. And it’s not just because Nureyev made him a main character of the story. It’s because it makes sense. Who is on stage from start to finish? Through whose eyes we are watching the whole story? We should be able to sympathize with Siegfried, we should be able to see his point, to understand him, to get what he’s doing and why – sort of at least. And that’s probably why I am so annoyed with traditional SLs where it mostly looks like the choreographers/dancers/ballet masters/whoever don’t even try and go with some bland hero, because whatever, we are all waiting for the 2nd act and the Swan anyway.
So, it’s clear I love Nureyev’s story with passion (you wouldn’t tell, would you!) and the moment the curtain raises I’m drawn to Siegfried no matter who’s the dancer. And, OK, if it’s Mathieu Ganio, I’m kind of helpless, I admit (it would be cute, I guess, were I not be way over 13 yo).
I will try to stay as reasonable as I could and not to embarrass myself. Too much. So I would not write about the stupid little things that nobody in their right mind would (or could!) notice (or at least not at the first sight), because, dear god, literally no one gives a damn about the way his fingers twitched during his Prologue‘s nightmare in perfect synchrony with the music and action on stage… Can I get to the point?! Preferably on this day!
Normal person would be probably unable to talk about Siegfried without Odette/Odile. But I think we have already established I’m by no means a normal person. So, I am not able to talk about Siegfried without Wolfgang. (Yes, we are finally getting somewhere!)
I love their relationship in any shape and form and I would gladly watch every single cast and every possible combination of dancers in those two roles as I’m sure each time I would get something new (you cannot stop my brain, believe me, I tried). There was the oddly depending, blurred, yet intense José/Karl take. The terrifyingly creepy, what-the-fuck-happened-or-is-still-happening-behind-the-close-doors Mathieu/Francois one (that still makes my hair stand whenever I think about it, because… holy shit, that one moment between 1st and 2nd act!). The clueless puppy/slightly perverted, obsessed mastermind vibes from Germain/Francois. So what about Mathieu/Jérémy this time, hm?
/AN – I’m gonna probably end up mixing dancers‘ names with their characters‘, so… Yeah. I have no excuses, it’s just going to happen anyway, no matter how hard I would try to prevent it./
It was clear from the very first moment, Siegfried was much more mature this time, much more the young adult than barely 18yo adolescent. He looked reasonably confident, sure of himself, a true aristocrat, a crown prince ready to be a king (almost to the point where I was thinking – oh, where’s my lost, Asperger’s child? I want my lost, Asperger’s child! Spoiler alert – I got my lost, Asperger’s child eventually, do not worry. Just wait for it). However, watching him during the opening dance scene it was becoming more and more clear everything’s not so smooth as it may seem. He grew impatient, the whole situation slowly but surely becoming unbearable, and he was fighting against it with all he had, trying to stay calm, trying to play the role he was expecting to, his nervous, involuntary fingers tapping against his throne the only thing out of place. But there was always Wolfgang for him in those moments. Wolfgang, who was the constant, never-changing presence. Wolfgang, who could be standing on the other side of the room and the connection between him and his prince almost palpable, magnetic, electrifying. Always there. Always sure.
They look like best friends, no matter their different social status. Wolfgang casually showing Siegfried one girl or another (funny how he didn’t need to bring Siegfried’s attention to men, since he was happily watching them on his own accord), whispering something to his ear (A court rumour? An inside joke? A reassurance to keep Siegfried in his right mind?), hand casually on his shoulder. When they were walking together, Wolfgang was positively hugging Siegfried with his arm around prince’s shoulders. And then you saw him standing side stage, watching Siegfried being crowned, watching him dance, watching his inner struggle started by queen’s mention of marriage, watching him trying to act all casual and „oh, it’s nothing, I’m all right“ while knowing his autism and insecurities and all the good stuff is kicking, trying to break free and took over his mind and soul again. Because Siegfried may be more in charge now, but once autistic, always autistic… The mental issues were there. Waiting. As well as Wolfgang. Watching, waiting, calculating, manipulating without anybody knowing, using the Machiavellianism to the point.
And I wanted to scream, because hell, Siegfried, you look like a reasonable, mature human being. You are not the lost child with puppy eyes, you have to know something’s off! Tell me, what do you know! But then they were together and it was painfully clear he simply believed they were at the same page, he had no reason not to think so, they were in this together. Take the moment at the end of the „dance lesson.“ José himself leant towards Karl, believing him implicitly, automatically, without question and on top of that he actually looked him in the eye, and there was the brilliant moment where Karl looked away like – “oh no, stop, this is too much, that’s not right” and also “I’m not affected by this at all.” Francois just grabbed Mathieu’s arm and pulled. The gesture strong, harsh, leaving no doubts and literally no space between the two of them, because “oh no no, my prince, you have no personal space, no free will, I am the one who will tell you what to do, I am the one in charge, don’t forget that, I certainly not let you forget, ever.” With Mathieu and Jérémy the movement towards each other was mutual. Mathieu leaned back, Jérémy went slightly forward whispering into his ear.
However just a few seconds earlier, during the actual dance lesson, was a moment that couldn’t be more out of the realm of things OK even if it tried. I remember someone did something similar in one of the older videos I saw through the years of my healthy social life, I, however, do not remember it being quite like this time. I’m talking about the moment nearly at the end with Siegfried kneeling on the floor with Wolfgang walking around him. Some Wolfgangs simply put their hand on prince’s shoulder and squeeze, some let their hand stay there for a bit (too) long, some doesn’t touch Siegfried at all for one reason or another. And then came Jérémy. He did touch Mathieu’s shoulder. Let his hand there. Heavy, grounding. And then, slowly, intentionally, almost proprietary traced his chest from one collar bone to the other. Touching the bare skin. Not in some delicate, subtle, almost-not-there motion with fingertips barely touching. This was open. Possessive. Claiming. I inhaled so sharply people on the balcony must have heard it. I almost gave myself a brain concussion. Or got high on oxygen overdose. Or something. Being at home alone (or maybe even with my family around) I would be screaming myself hoarse and/or swearing profusely. But since I was sitting in a theatre with 2,5 thousands other people completely clueless of my inner battle, I had to… just keep breathing and acting cool. Not that I was particularly successful or anything.
How the 1st Act was going, it was more and more clear Siegfried depended on Wolfgang. And what was even more painful, it was his own decision. Surely, he was manipulated into it to some extent and at some point, but with this prince I believe if one asked him, he would say he believes Wolfgang. “Because he’s a friend. Because he’s helping. He’s good. Stop asking stupid questions, I’m not an idiot!” You had to admit this Wolfgang did a fucking good job without actually showing it (and showing off, looking at you, Francois). Because at the end of Act 1 all he had to do to stop Siegfried from following the running boys was turn his head. He didn’t step to stay in his way, he didn’t cross his arms or shake his head disapprovingly. He just stood there, then looked slightly over his shoulder and Siegfried stopped. Like that. And then, just before he was about to start his andante sostenuto variation (during which I most definitely died, because there was simply no other option, since this monster of a man, while doing his manege of jetés entrelacé, decided to turn the palm of his front arm up to make the landing pose in arabesque a cry, with his arm desperately reaching towards something, to fill every fucking detail of his movement with intention and meaning and who the hell asked this from you?! I can scarcely cope even while you are just dancing and feeling the music in ways that are too close to mine, could you please tell me, why you had to even do THIS to me?! Am I not dead enough?), he looked back at Wolfgang. Like if I could forget about their connection…!
But what was between the two of them exactly? I don’t have a clue. I know what I see in José/Karl interpretation. I know how I understand Mathieu/Francois relationship (because I am a bad person, my mind is poisoned and my brain is sick!). But Mathieu/Jérémy? There’s so much going on but I for the love of all that is holy cannot put a finger on it. (And that’s probably one of the reasons I almost went to the stage door to tell them I love them. I didn’t. I am an adult. I do not fangirl. I just go home and deal with all the feelings like the emotionally repressed person I am. I would make an excellent posh Englishman.) Let’s just say it was for the first time that Wolfgang was taller than Siegfried. Significantly taller. So whenever Siegfried wanted to looked him in the eyes, he had to look UP. And this stupid, tiny, little detail made me feel so many things, it’s not even funny anymore (which falsely indicated it WAS funny once, which most definitely was NOT). But just imagine the Siegfried/Wolfgang duet between act 1 and 2 with Siegfried coming to Wolfgang, to looking up to his eyes, and try not to see the vulnerability in it. Try not to see all the cards changing. Because it should have been Siegfried over Wolfgang because of their social status. During act one they were at the same level – because Siegfried wanted so. And now, suddenly, it was Wolfgang over Siegfried. And when he put the prince on the ground in the end, Siegfried looked yet again completely lost, devastated and abused… You just didn’t know how exactly this time. Or you did, but it was still just a wild guess, you couldn’t be completely, absolutely, 100% sure.
What was sure – Siegfried was broken. He took the offered crossbow as if not knowing what he is doing, as if not knowing it’s his hands that is holding it.  And then he stood up, turned and wanted to go to Wolfgang, because obviously. He made two steps, and Wolfgang was just standing there, centre stage, looking (not with the arms dismissively crossed as Francois, mind you) and Siegfried stopped, tripped over his feet, looked and promptly turned back. And there was something so unbelievably hurt in him. Because he knew what the crossbow means, figuratively. And that’s what hurt him most. Seeing Wolfgang with it. Seeing Wolfgang pushing him towards the edge, knowing he’s helpless, knowing that it would be him who would jump, he himself, nobody would actually push him, just bring him so near the edge, there would be no other choice. It was like an accusation. Because “I believed you. I trusted you. I thought we were friends. I thought you would help me. And you pushed me back towards my illness, pushed me into those dreams that we both know will be the end of me.” You could almost touch the moment, the last flicker of consciousness, the hurt creeping from the deep of Siegfried’s soul but it was too late already. It was late the moment he took the crossbow. And you were watching him losing the somewhat sane part of his mind, the part that knows, and falling to his dreams, to his forbidden world. Because giving the poor Asperger’s little prince a bit of schizophrenia is a way to go. Hello, this is me, nice to meet you.
Yes, partly this whole mess of a situation was the Queen’s fault. Her mentioning marriage and crowning and you know, the adult stuff, made Siegfried quiver in his so painfully hard-won stable mental state of sorts, that seemed more stable than in other SLs, but was still too fragile. But Wolfgang was the one who made it happened, who was the vital help, who was the final cause. Because who else could have been more successful? Who would have been better for such job? Who could have managed such thing if not him…?
I’ll give you a break and am gonna talk about 3rd act for a bit. Because Mathieu Ganio’s Siegfried in act 3 is a fucking piece of art and someone give the man an award for it!
There was an achingly apparent difference between Act 1 Siegfried and Act 3 Siegfried. While during the 1st Act he was able to hold himself together to the point one would not tell he had any mental issues, in 3rd Act he was loosing his contact with reality from the start. And of course he was, with no Wolfgang behind his back whispering to his ear, keeping him in check, distracting him while things become too tedious and tiring, calming him by his mere presence. So his standing up and leaving the stage during character dances made so much sense. He refused the princesses with pleasure and right then he threw everything, his control, his mind, his consciousness out of window, and just jumped, leaving his illness in charge and Odile with Rothbart appeared. And if Odette and the lake was a dream, this was much more a fantasy. I’m going to repeat myself, but I stop when there would be more than one Siegfried like this in 3rd Act. Because this Siegfried was not dragged across stage by Odile, he was not simply following her with heart eyes, smiling and thinking rather stupidly she’s Odette, the pure, fragile girl from the lake even though she’s acting almost completely different. This Siegfried was confident, self-assured, constantly trying to convince Odile of his power and to prove himself. He grew impatient with her constant escaping, there was anger and sharpness in some of his movements. We all know the moment when Siegfried is standing behind Odile and she’s taking his arms to hug herself, right? So Mathieu Ganio leaned in and kissed. Her. On. The. Neck.
(I let that information sink.) (And while it would be sinking, I take a little walk to ease some of the tension and calm my inner voice that is screaming profanities, cause HOLYFUCKINGSHIT, can you imagine the dreamy, pure, innocent prince from previous act to do such thing?!)
I would also like to mention the black adagio. You know, the one where Siegfried is supposed to be fascinated by Odile who is seducing him? The one, during which this time was not quite clear if the prince was watching the enchanting black swan or Rothbart with the same intent, with the same intensity in his eyes and tension between the two of them…? Yeah.
(Also – Jérémy before his Rothbart variation, sitting on Siegfried’s throne like it belongs to him. Good grief!)
The end of act 3 wasn’t as much of a mad scene as it was in 2016. However Siegfried fell down on the floor completely unceremoniously, lying on his back and while the curtain opened and we were in the 4th Act he lied there in the exact same position and it looked almost like he’s in his bed. Like he completely lost it during the ball (and lost it he did) and was escorted to his chambers, put to his bed and now his poor, tortured mind sent him yet again to the woods, to the lake side.
Odette in act 2 was a complete figment of Siegfried’s imagination, appearing suddenly from nowhere, made from thin air, sharing Siegfried’s pain and deep grief. (Yes, even in act 2, because this time there were no heartfelt love confessions, no big romance, no sunny smiles and promises of happily ever after. But there was a bond. Strong and deeply felt.) In 4th Act she was resigned. She knew she’s about to die and there’s nothing she could do about it. Because Odette is Siegfried. In this performance and interpretation more than ever. She was his innocence that was somehow betrayed and violated by the act 3 fantasy. She was his integral part, she was his childhood, she was his hope, she was the last piece of his sanity, she was him. And Siegfried came to her guiltily, ashamed of himself, afraid to look herself in the eyes and see what became of him. Because he was dying. And he knew it.
And then Rothbart appeared and took Odette from Siegfried. Took his hope, his mind, his soul - like the mental illnesses, Siegfried’s ultimate bane and his final doom. And then came the last moment. When Siegfried turned around and there, in the middle of the mists stood someone. With arm held forward, palm up as in an invitation. And then… magnificent, ethereal Wolfgang spread his arms wide. Opened them for his prince, to let him jump into. And Siegfried run and jumped with his last breath and last desperate cry of arched back to the arms of death. That is nor evil, nor kind. That simply is.
And it makes you wonder – what if this was in the end the best option for Siegfried after all? What if Wolfgang was doing what he was doing having his prince’s good in mind? Was it something he himself believed in? That he was helping? Or was it just something he would say, if anybody asked? And was he ever even real?
Hello. This is Nureyev’s Swan Lake for you. Causes many questions. Answers none. Gives you bunch of other instead.
Please, do feel free to tell me I should find a professional help.

Rick Rich Answers Fan Questions
We had some of our most avid fans ask their burning questions for Swan Princess Director, Richard Rich.
His long-awaited interview is here:
Don't miss hearing Rick's voice answer the last question!
What got you in to animation?
When I graduated from college, I wanted to work at Disney. That had been my life desire. I had graduated in Music and I wanted to work in the music department. Of course, there were no openings for a young guy like me. Disney had a traffic department with about 30 people that would pick up and deliver the mail all day through out the studio. The idea was that the talent would be able to go around and meet people on the lot and if they found an opening they could move out of traffic into some area that suited them in studio. For 3 months I would write a letter to Disney and the next week I would call and the next week I would write another letter and so on. Finally they said “ok ok enough, come in and we will give you a job in traffic”. The traffic department did not pay very much and I was married and had a little boy. I decided I would teach piano lessons at the studio for extra income. So on my lunch hour I taught a couple of animators and a couple secretaries. The only piano I could find was right next to the head of the animation department. Interestingly enough, the head of the animation department at that time was named Donald Duckwall. I always found that funny. An Assistant Director was retiring from the animation department and in discussions of who to hire for that position they thought it would be nice to have someone who knew something about music so they didn’t always have to go through the music department. Donald Duckwall spoke up and said “well there is this young guy in traffic who teaches piano lessons everyday next to my office on his lunch hour”. They interviewed me and 25 other people applying for that job. The job was an Assistant Director to John Lounsbery who was one of the 9 old men, original animators; he was now going to direct Winnie the Pooh and Tigger Too. I got the job! Really just a typical Hollywood story of going from nowhere to somewhere.
What was your inspiration to make The Swan Princess?
We wanted to make a fairy tale, a classic fairy tale, like Cinderella. Swan Lake had never been done and was very much an animation type project since the main character changes to a Swan. The only way to move forward on an idea like that is to have a great story. Brian Nissen and I started researching. We read different versions of Swan Lake, listened to the ballet, whatever we could think of. We were able to come up with a story concept that was really quite intriguing. We got more and more excited as we worked on it. The big breakthrough for us was the moon and how the moon worked into the story. She would only be a human when there was a moon. Every night she would change from a swan into a human as the moonlight touched the lake. That was a very exciting, beautiful kind of transition that could happen. What really made the story come together was that there are nights with no moon in the sky. It was a night with no moon when Odette was supposed to come to the castle so Derek could vow his everlasting love. But, of course, she couldn’t turn into Odette. She stayed as a swan. Odette had to fly to the castle and that gave us a really exciting and dramatic moment. Once we came up with that we knew we had a really great story.

How long did the art take for the first film?
The original Swan Princess was in production for 3 years. The first 6 to 8 months was a development period. It includes writing the script and doing character designs to develop what each character will look like. The actual production period was 2 years. That is when we would do the storyboards, which all have to be hand drawn. Then we would do the layouts, which were also hand drawn, at that time. Then painting the backgrounds, completing the pencil art and painting all the cels. The art process took that entire two year period.

How long did the first film take to make without cutting anything out (in total)?
In animation we pre-edit the film. It’s not like live action where we shoot lots of footage and then we cut it all together. The entire animated film is put together in story reels using story sketches. The reason we do that is because animation requires so many people and so much money to get it all right that we don’t want to animate a scene that isn’t in the picture. We spend a lot of time in developing these story reels or anamatics we call them. They’re just still shots going from one scene to another. But we know how long each scene is and we know what the actions with be in that scene. Once we like what we see, we like the pacing of it, we like the dialogue that we’ve recorded then we move into animation. So there are very few out takes in animation. That doesn’t mean we don’t trim and tighten things up but its pretty much done in the storyboard phase of the production. So that is a big part of the 3 year production period that was required for The Swan Princess.
Are there any more productions that you are going to direct that will be in traditional animation?
Traditional animation is pretty much a thing of the past. The reason is that all of the major studios have moved into CGI. The great artists that it takes to draw a hand drawn animation feature just aren’t out there anymore. There is not eough of a demand. Back when Disney and Dreamworks and Warner Brothers were all competing for the artists there was a real boom in the need for the hand drawn artists. All that went out the window when the computer animation took over with Toy Story and slowly moved away from 2D animation. So the problem in doing more hand drawn animated film is not a desire but it’s finding the skilled and high-end talent that it requires to make a beautiful hand drawn picture. However, it is important to understand that even in the CGI world of animation it isn’t all computer and there is still the requirement for artists. We still use hand drawn art character design and storyboards. They are first designed with the pencil before we take them to CGI. Storyboard artists are very much in demand and those are the artists that visualize the written word from the script and make it come alive with drawings. Anyone who is interested in getting into animated film making does not need to specialize in animation, because that is not a step that is done anymore, but in the pre-production steps of layout, character design, storyboard, painting backgrounds and working with color. Those are still skills that every CGI production house requires. That’s where your emphasis should be put.

Can you tell us something more about the series revival in 2012?
Back in the 90’s we made 3 full-length Swan Princess films and then stopped. When 2010 came around DVD sales were declining all over the industry but the Swan Princess DVD sales remained kind of steady. Sony Pictures approached The Swan Princess Producer and said “There seems to be a demand for this brand and fans out there that really like the films and the story. Would you be interested in making more of them”. We had originally thought they would need to be 2D animation, but it was really difficult to find the artists to do that. So we built all of the original characters in CGI and showed Sony that we could make them look pretty close to what they look like in 2D. They got very excited and we made the transition into the 3D world, into the CGI world. It has been so exciting because it opens up so many more possibilities of making the shows with many more visual effects.

How much different it is to make CGI movie than hand-drawn animated?
The difficult step in a hand drawn film is the artistry, especially finding the artists that can draw the characters so that they always look the same. Numerous skilled artists are needed because one artist can’t draw all the images of a character. Getting the characters to look the same through out the entire film is one of the biggest struggles and where we spend a lot of time and money. In CGI we build a model that is just like having a human actor. We don’t have to draw the character from every angle, which is very difficult in 2D. We can just shoot the model from a down shot, an up shot, any angle we need. That process has made the consistent look much better in CGI. No matter where we place the camera or what action the character does, it always looks like that character. The other thing that CGI adds to the process is that we get to use the live action camera. In 2D animation you pretty much can truck in, you can pan sideways but you can’t move the camera around a character. In CGI we can swish the camera around and do all of the dramatic things that you see in a live action movie. You can see this in all of the new Swan Princess films we have created, we are starting on Swan Princess 9 now and it is just thrilling to see what the camera can do in this show.Interestingly enough a CGI film is not much faster to make because some processes take longer in CGI that were shorter in 2D. A live action feature takes two or three years just like it did in the 2D drawing. It doesn’t save time and it is not cheaper. It just gives us capabilities that we didn’t ever have in 2D.For instance, when I was at Disney I was one of the Directors on The Black Cauldron. In that film Taran had a little bauble that could fly around, it was a little glowing orb. I can remember we spent 6 months on a scene where this little glowing bauble went into a cave. I wanted to make sure that the light from the bauble lit the walls of the cave. We had to make all the moving mats on the side of the wall to make it look like the light was moving across this cave, which was very time consuming. With CGI we just light it like a live action set and the bauble and the light move together. This could be created in a couple of weeks at the most.
How do you write a script for a Swan Princess movie? Where do you get ideas? Do you have plans where you are going with the story and the characters?
The stories come from a variety of ideas and requirements. Some are marketing driven. Some are fan driven. Some are just to fun ideas to experience with the characters. For instance, when we got into doing the CGI films in the series, Sony felt it was really important that Derek and Odette have a child. We didn’t want to repeat the process of growing up that we had done with Derek and Odette in the first film so we came up with the solution of having Derek and Odette adopt Alise. She gave us an opportunity to give Derek and Odette a child who could already talk and have her own story. We have had a lot of remarks from fans saying they want to see more of Odette and Derek and more of a fairy tale feeling. So in Swan 8 we have done a new story built around Derek and Odette, to capture the loving feelings that they had in the first film. Swan Princess 8 worked really well to give us a dramatic and rejuvenated love interest. In Swan 9 Alise and Lucas are now 16 and 17 involved in a love triagle with another Prince from China. Alise has to face difficult decisions about who she is going to love. It’s a very dramatic story and it captures all of the feeling that was in the original Swan film but with new characters. We don’t have a thru storyline, like Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings because these are not books. We come up with ideas that feed off previous stories but take us into new territory to keep all of the fans interested and show them the characters changing, growing up and facing challenges.

I love the character of Alise, was it risky to change the main character in the middle of the series? And will Odette ever have main role again?
Alise is still a side character. There are films that have really focused on her but she will continue to be used in the series to display the love Derek and Odette have for one another and for children.

Can I have hope for many more movies to come in the future beyond 8 and 9?
Hope is eternal! We are hoping that there will be many more and it looks like everyone is working to make that happen.
I've always loved the sidekicks - Jean-Bob, Speed and Puffin. I also loved the addition of Number 9 to the group (is it okay to officially count him as part of the group now?). Is it possible the original fourth sidekick, Whizzer, will return?
Yes indeed you can count Number 9 as a sidekick. His character is so entertaining. Another character in the show that really fantastic is Scully. There is something about him that draws you into the story.Whizzer was a fun, comic character in one of the earlier films. As we get farther and farther into the series there is always a chance that he could come back.
Is there a chance there will be at least one more movie with Odette turning into swan?
The idea of Odette of changing into a swan is a challenge. We get requests for that quite often but it is an issue that we face as storytellers. If Odette is changed into a swan it has do be done through magic, one of 2 ways, either through good or through evil.If we use evil, we will be repeating a plot that we have already used 3 times. There would be no suspense about Odette becoming trapped as a swan, rescued, probably by Derek, and will again becomes the human Princess Odette. It is not really good story telling. We could use good to change Odette into a swan. Once we do that and use magic to do that then she can change back and forth at will. From a storytelling standpoint the transformation loses inspiration and is no longer a vehicle for suspense or for the battle between good and evil.

What inspired the Transformation/title sequence?
Towards the end of the original show it came time to introduce the title, The Swan Princess, on the screen without giving away too much about the story. One of the highlights of that first film was seeing Odette transform from a swan into a princess. We decided to do a really neat art version of those special effects swirling up and bringing the title on screen. It is a mirror of the transformation in the show reflected in the title.

Was Swan 3 originally meant to be the final film in the series?
The first 3 films were thought of as a trilogy so when we finished the 3
rd
one it was pretty much felt that it was the end. But what we didn’t forsee was that the fan base grew and wanted more. It was actually the fans that made all the new ones to happen because they clamored for more. Sony heard them and brought 6 more stories to life. It has been such an exciting opportunity to bring new stories and characters to the fans and to feel the love from the following that the original Swan Princess had.
When designing Zelda was she always intended to be as psychotic (and hilarious) as she is or was that a choice by the voice actress?
When we wrote the story for Swan 3 we wanted to have a comic villain and a female because we already had two serious, male villians with Rothbart and Clavuis. It gave us an opportunity to create a really amusing character. So the concept was in the script but the voice actor really brought Zelda’s maniacal personality to life.
Which Villain allied themselves with Rothbart first out of Clavius and Zelda?
The story Zelda tells Whizzer is only partly true. True – She found Rothbart languishing in despair after King William destroyed his power and she inspired him to work again. The part she doesn’t tell is that she and Rothbart were stuck. They needed help. Rothbart reached out to one of his younger rivals, Clavius. The three of them re-conjured the Forbidden Arts together. But after their success Rothbart turned on them both. They didn’t dare challenge his power at that time. After Clavius died in the mountain, Zelda never bothered to include Clavius in the story of the recreation of the Forbidden Arts because there was no one alive to challenge her account. She painted Clavius as an interloper who tried to steal what she and Rothbart developed together.
On the topic of the Forbidden Arts, have we truly seen the last of it in the series? Or is there a chance it might come back?
The Forbidden Arts was a power Rothbart had harnessed. There is a chance that the Forbidden Arts could come back if we discover a new and exciting way to give it additional powers so that it brings something original to the series.
Michelle Nicastro, sadly, passed away, but we were wondering if she were still alive today would you have kept her on as the voice of Odette?
Listen to Rick's answer here
The death of Michelle Nicastro was a real shock and it happened when we were just starting to do Swan 4 and rebooting up the series. It was every intention that we would use her. She was going to come in and we did not know at that time that she had been very ill and very sick. But when the time came in to record she called and said that she couldn’t do it. And she died 3 days later. And It was really a total heartbreak for us. Not because we lost her in the series because we lost an incredible actress and a sweet spirit. She, in her life, was as sweet as the character Odette. And I think that’s why she was able to portray Odette in such an incredible way, is because she actually was that kind of a person. And if she were alive today she would be the voice of Odette for as long as we could use her.

Masquerade
(paper faces on Parade!) ANYWHOOT! I’ve seen some confusion (and amusement)  going around in regards to Reaper’s costume choice in the recent Overwatch comic. I saw one post explain things, but I wanted to expand upon that and include the other costumes as well. (Theater nerd, HOOO.) P.S I love that they’re doing this in the middle of Carnival. To start off with Widowmaker: We’ve already figured this one out since the Swan Lake ballet skins are already in the game. The dynamic of how the person who plays Odette also oft plays Odile in the ballet, and the implications of playing an innocent character and their dark counterpart. Black Swan, anyone? Widowmaker doesn’t dress up in the comic but is wearing it on the splash page. Sombra:
Tumblr media
Many will recognize that she’s dressed as a Harlequin, Batman jokes aside this could actually be just as significant as Widowmaker having the Swan Lake skins. “His role is that of a light-hearted, nimble and astute servant, often acting to thwart the plans of his master.”
They were also used to keep a performance moving along; in any rate, giving Sombra a costume of a trickster character type that is either in the background or acting as a distraction or the one who keeps the action moving along is highly appropriate. She’s very obviously, a trickster, and even though she doesn’t seem to be a specific character, like Reaper and Widomaker...well all things considered, it works VERY well this way.  Reaper:
Tumblr media
I could probably go on for DAAAAAYS about this one. Yes, as many pointed out he is dressed as the Phantom does during the Masqurade in Phantom of the Opera. A character, that already clicks well with Reaper in a way. A man who worked from the shadows to keep his beloved theater Black Ops running the way he wanted it to. Both the Phantom and Reaper feel very spurred and are bitter; but there’s a deeper connection here that I’ve noticed has flown under the radar. Forgetting, a moment, that the Phantom dressed this way, what’s important here is who the Phantom is dressed AS. It’s a costume of the character Death specifically from The Masque of the Red Death. By Edgar Allan Poe. Why is this important? For those who haven’t read it, (perhaps you only know it by name), the summary will speak for itself:  “The story follows Prince Prospero's attempts to avoid a dangerous plague, known as the Red Death, by hiding in his abbey. He, along with many other wealthy nobles, hosts a masquerade ball within seven rooms of the abbey, each decorated with a different color. In the midst of their revelry, a mysterious figure disguised as a Red Death victim enters and makes his way through each of the rooms. Prospero dies after confronting this stranger, whose "costume" proves to contain nothing tangible inside it; the guests also die in turn.” Reaper is currently hunting down former Overwatch members, and there are reports saying that it was already occurring before Overwatch was shut down. You can’t hide from something already there.  And as for the Prince that chases down death to the final room? Well. I think we all know who that is. Doomfist:
Tumblr media
This one is a bit...difficult.  It’s a costume similar to things from the Baroque era. And I may have admittedly burnt myself out on this one, because I feel like I’m missing something here, but I can’t put my finger on it. ANYWAYS. This may be something similar to Sombra, where it’s not a specific CHARACTER but a character TYPE. Which may have some historical relevance. Aside from the Baroque-esque flourishings, the outfit reminds me of those cavalier type characters in media. Real Cavaliers played a rolled in the English Civil War,  as wealthy supporters of the crown.   So perhaps that, in itself is the reference since Doomfist is trying to get the humans vs Omnics thing going again.  I KNOW I have seen this before, but searching is proving fruitless because I can’t think of the specific reference. Regardless, it’s still interesting to see him dressed in this manner. If not to represent being loyal to say, royalty, it could be the implication of loyalty to SOMEONE who has a deep interest in keeping Omnics vs. Humans going.  Side note: The Three Musketeers in media are often represented in similar clothes, and there WERE four main characters (not three!), but if that’s the reference, it stops there seeing as the characters don’t match up with each other perfectly.  But yes! I hope this gets all of your brain meats thinking, and if someone can figure out if Doomfist is dressed as a specific character, please feel free to comment who! Or if I remember, I’ll come back to this post and add it on. (I’ve ruled out Pirates of Penzance and Otello)
