absolutely despicable behavior from WB to plunder a fan film from 15 years ago just because their corporate greed led them to want to make their own (likely soulless even with PJ’s involvement) version with the exact same title.
Tumblr media
UPDATE: the copyright has been released and the fan film The Hunt for Gollum is back on YouTube and can be watched. Though, it's still really telling of the capitalist corruption of WB and Hollywood that their first move and publicity for this (unnecessary) movie was to directly attack the fans for something produced over a decade ago.

Friendly reminder that while it is perfectly okay to not want to watch any of the newer Middle Earth based series, whether it be Rings of Power, The Hunt for Gollum, or even The Hobbit trilogy, etc, please also remember that this will be some new fans first introduction to this amazing, incredibly rich world of stories, don't let your negativity or media preferences ruin it for them. Don't be like those in the past who shamed people who became new fans via the LOTR movies by Peter Jackson, claiming they were not true fans, and how the movies weren't accurate and therefore not worth being praised and watched. Don't do that. Let them be. Let them experience this wonder just as you once did.
Also, not that it is needed to be a "valid fan"; but most all of these people also go on to later read all of the many books based in this world; most are aware that none of these films are truly "canon" or fully accurate, and that is perfectly okay! They can still be enjoyed, loved, and watched, they are also a vital part of bringing a new generation of fans in! So tag your negativity properly and let the new fans be, it doesn't matter what drew them in, just welcome them as you once were.

Here are my thoughts on the new lotr film: don’t want it, don’t need it, it’s unnecessary, and I don’t care that pj and andy serkis are involved. In fact I think the only people who should be allowed to make Tolkien films are fans with low budgets, a camera, and a vision.

Listen I was somewhat excited about the animated Rohan movie
I am not excited about the Gollum movie, because I have a feeling it’s just going to be “Everything that was bad about The Hobbit movies but amplify it by eleven”
Anyways if you haven’t already watched the 2009 fan film, “The Hunt for Gollum”, then check that out it’s a banger

Today has sure been a day for announcements!
Firstly that Tom is going to play Sir Edmund Hillary in a new film (which means he's going to be doing a New Zealand accent and I am so excited!!!)
They've announced two new films set in Middle Earth will be produced by Peter Jackson in Wellington, first one directed by Andy Serkis who will also be playing Gollum again.
And lastly, a sixth scale figure of Loki in his green outfit from the finale of season 2 of the series was announced by Hot Toys. This one seems to have a really good likeness to Tom.
So much goodnesssssssss! 💚💛💚

i know it’s not canon but i watched the hunt for gollum on youtube because i was aching for more lotr content, here are my thoughts!
• good casting choices for aragorn and gandalf, extras and prancing pony/bar atmosphere is also good, solid acting
• interesting concept of aragorn receiving tips from another ranger, i think that’s totally something that could’ve happened
• excellent makeup/prosthetics on the orcs!
• i felt like i was watching fanfiction come to life. i love fanmade content <3
• i liked it a lot! it was short, but it didn’t need to be any longer to get the point across.
i just really enjoy aragorn, and especially aragorn as strider so i love anything that fills in the gaps in the movies where we don’t see him, and pre- or post- events of lotr. feel free to direct me to any fanfic regarding him at any time, i will be your friend forever
• i will be watching born of hope next but i’m also really absorbed in reading the fellowship for the first time so we’ll see when i get around to that!

I am SO EXCITED that we are getting a new LOTR movie! ABOUT GOLLUM!!! This is a dream come true! I was here hoping for the effects in the original films to be updated, this is the most I thought I could get of Adny Serkis's Gollum -- I thought a new movie featuring Sméagollum, especially Andy's version, was incredibly unlikely, and I am SO PLEASED to be proven wrong!!! I am in shock, I can hardly believe this is happening!!! I am overwhelmed with glee!
I'M GETTING MY SMÉAGOLLUM BACK!
The effects in The Hobbit were INCREDIBLE -- imagine how they'll look NOW?! Sméagollum is going to be GORGEOUS!
I read 2 films are going to be released; the first in 2026. The working title is "The Hunt for Gollum", which was also the name of a fan-made short film where Aragorn hunted Gollum! So I'm assuming that's what the movies will be based on! Aragorn searching for Gollum, taking him to Mirkwood where he is imprisoned and interrogated by Gandalf!
This gives them the opportunity to provide us with MORE YOUNG SMÉAGOL FLASHBACKS, as Gandalf asked about his past in the books! I'm curious how they'll go about that, seeing how Sméagol forgot his name in Jackson's Two Towers and that's how Gandalf figured out what his name was!
In my fan story, I imagined Gandalf peered into his subconscious while he was asleep so that Sméagollum wasn't actually aware on a conscious level. Gandalf is capable of reading minds if "the person is open to him", according to the books.
I... can't wait. I am beyond ecstatic!!!

*WB announces new Lotr movies with the first being what will likely be 2+ hours of Aragorn searching for Gollum, all derived from two pages of the book.*
The fandom: Uhh, I don't know if this is such a good idea. Especially with Hollywood's track record with cash grab sequels and lazy attempts at cinematic universes.
"OH MY GOSH!!!! NOBODY HATES LOTR LIKE LOTR FANS!!!!"

Inspired by the Hunt for Gollum 2 day fiasco (I suppose it wasn't really a fiasco, genuinely happy they came to such a quick resolution, I will give it to them), I noticed a bunch of people said they'd never heard of the Hunt for Gollum fanfilm and was surprised! So here are some more tolkien fan films on youtube that you can watch right now! A friend of mine coalated all of these for our server and we binged them all, which was a really great time and I would heartily recommend.
Obviously, first; The Hunt for Gollum, a 40min shortfilm pretty much entirely about Aragorn, you guessed it, hunting gollum. But there's also a few neat interactions with other characters too and the production is of an extremely good quality for what it is.
Then you have Born of Hope, from the same company as hunt for gollum, this one focuses more on Arathorn and Gilraen's relationship and Aragorn's tumultuous birth. It's very depressing but I also really liked the casting of Arathorn and is worth a watch.
Horn of Gondor is a short 20min fanfilm with a pretty inventive premise, focusing on Borondir's in-universe fabled ride to deliver Steward Cirion's request for an alliance with the ancestral rohirrim to Eorl their king, thereby saving Gondor from defeat. I find it a little lacklustre and it doesnt really measure up to it's concept but the attempt is still admirable and there is some real and clear passion behind it so still worth a watch.
Wings Over Arda is, gonna be honest, my favourite one of the lot. It is an hour long and extremely ambitiously attempts to feature events from Tuor's meeting with Ulmo, to the attack of the Sons of Feanor upon Doriath. It essentially fails to live up to the auspicousness of any of these things, but it is EXTREMELY earnest and the casting for Dior in particular is now just burned into my brain. It feels kind of like it was made in the 1980s too which I just love for a film that came out 2 years ago. It's really fun, give it a go.
One of the Seven is more of a hobbit movie fanfilm, referencing PJ's Thranduil backstory of losing his wife and the hunt for her jewels, but also involving dwarves and elves bickering over unspecified rings. It has the brightest colour pallette of all the films which is a visual relief and all the costumes are really detailed, mainly because I suspect this was made my cosplayers who just had some time on their hands. It's fun and campy and only 25mins so fully digestable, even if it's a little dwarf-ist.
Lastly there's The Peril to the Shire, even though cards on the table I have not watched this one. It is three hours long and was made by a bunch of homeschooled children somewhere, featuring entirely child actors and about Rosie Cotten defending the Shire pre-scouring. From what I've seen, the kids are having a great time doing it, but the audio is also really hard to hear clearly so this is more of a challenge than a suggestion.

Had some more thoughts about the new LOTR movie "The Hunt for Gollum" and which characters are likely in it besides him. Putting this behind a cut for spoilers, though if you read the books and/or watched the fan film of the same name on YT you'll know a few. That being said I do think they'll expand this with more plots and add more characters both from the movies and the books, also since this is just the first of at least 2 new movies coming. I've also included a fancast here for 2 roles I hope are finally cast for this and weren't in the movies.
First is Aragorn. He's a major part of this and likely will be one of the main characters that carries over into the 2nd of these new films. Highly doubt it'd be a de-aged Viggo so we're likely going to get a younger British actor here. It's hard to fancast since we don't know the age range they'll be looking for, but something tells me it'll be a 30something actor especially with how many of these movies they're planning. Did see a fan suggest that Viggo can play older Aragorn telling this story to his children, so we'd get 2 Aragorns connecting it which I like.
Arwen is next. She wasn't in the story, but we know her and Aragorn's relationship began around the same time. There's been rumors these movies were going to feature younger versions of the characters last year, so this fits too. Plus, they need a female lead and their romance is one of the popular ships. Like above I think they'll cast a younger actress that resembles Liv, but like the fan suggested Liv could also play older Arwen.
If it sticks to the story Gandalf will be in this too as he tasks Aragon with finding Gollum. Now I can see Ian agreeing to having himself de-aged for this but not sure if they need that as I don't think he looks that different. The story is more about Gollum and Aragorn, so he'd be in a few scenes.
Next is Legolas. He's in the story too and would show more about his and Aragorn's friendship. Would be interesting if Orlando would come back too as I think he'd be ok with getting de-aged too but only slightly for him as he just looks a bit older.
Then this could be where we finally get Arwen's twin brothers Elladan and Elrohir!!! 😀 A lot of us always wanted them in the movies and it is strange they were cut out (though some think they are in the background of a few scenes). They're close friends of Aragorn too and easily could assist him in this. This is where my fancast comes in as both Harris Dickinson and George Mackay popped in my head to play them. Both are talented rising British actors, have dark hair and blue eyes, are tall, and I think look like Liv's Arwen, as well as the movies' Elrond, Galadriel, and Celeborn to look related to them. Also, Harris and George get confused for each other a lot (and played the same character as Harris couldn't be in the feature film version of "Femme", which he did the short film, and the recast him with George) and some thought they were brothers. They could just get one of them to play both if they want identical, but some fans think they're fraternal but do still resemble each other so two actors who look alike work too.
Then if Elrond, Galadriel (I'm certain Cate could still play her), Celeborn, or anyone else from the original LOTR movies are in this, or other characters from the books they could also add that weren't like Glorfindel for one.
Finally Sauron. There's a part of this story where Gollum is taken and Sauron himself tortures him to find out where the ring is. Gollum even explains he saw Sauron in full form and that he was missing a finger and spoke to him. So will they get Benedict Cumberbatch back to voice Sauron and/or actually play him in live-action as so far only "Rings of Power" have had an actor playing where you can see his face.
