grant me the bravery of a mediocre dude who looks at one of the most popular animated tv shows of all time, known for its heart and its humour and its empathy, and thinks "it would be better if it was more like game of thrones"

Things that natla did do:
- Katara stealing a water pouch from a merchant shop at night
- zuko draws!
- include pieces from the books and comics (mother of faces, Kyoshi‘s personality,
- „water the most promising seed“
- Katara standing by and smirking as Sokka flounders trying to impress Suki but her not buying any of it
- Katara never letting anyone talk over her once diplomacy fails
- Bumi‘s armpit hair
- Zuko talking about Lu Ten
- Azula learning to use a blue flame and failing
- what can I say, the actors make the show very enjoyable 🤷🏼‍♀️
- Kuruk refusing to take possession over Aang‘s body/ Avatar state
- overall I think they drew info from the books about the other eras
- the sound of Iroh‘s firebending reminding of a dragon‘s growl
- Avatar Roku making fun of Avatar Kyoshi
- Zuko basically enthusing about Kyoshi‘s strength only to then get his ass kicked by her
- Suki (and mom) gushing over seeing their role model Kyoshi in action
- random woman with broom and Zuko letting her hit him
- Aang running away at the end, after the battle. He might not have run from his responsibility but he ran from the consequences
- „have you seen my flying bison?“ which is way better because even less believable
- Katara being bold enough to train her waterbending in the abandoned fire navy ship around Wolf Cove
- emphasis on Sokka‘s inventory skills and by elongation his bad ice dodging skills
- Zuko deciding to stay with/ look for Iroh instead of chasing Aang twice
- Lu Ten‘s theme playing every time Zuko and Iroh confess their love for each other
- Omashu‘s part of the earth kingdom being India coded
- Zuko so specifically being triggered by the word „compassion“ but not „empathy/ emphatic“ because he actually does believe in kindness and much like Azula is still trapped in the pressure of having to represent all his father believes
- Zuko looking disgusted all the time
- 41st division bowing to their prince
- I had fun watching it and most of it makes sense tbh.
What I don’t get (logic mistakes):
- Mai being too openly anti fire nation by saying she wouldn’t ever come back if given the chance
- Iroh finding the Blue Spirit‘s mask in Zuko‘s pile of clothes but maybe that’s not even a negative.
- no talk about the meaning of the necklace
- Gyatso Living in the Spirit World (doesn’t Aang have enough guides with all his previous lives?);
- that assassination attempt on Ozai and Azula infiltrating the plan? Was this meant to show Ozai‘s cruelty and Azula‘s strategic thinking??
- what was Bumi‘s point exactly?
- Yue being a spirit fox. Why? It added nothing.
- „i bet you taste like chicken“ no opossum chicken. just chicken.
- Kyoshi being the narrator
- Aang being able to communicate with his past lives only by visiting their shrines and not in the right order (usually the avatar has to contact every avatar before him in the order of their lifetimes before he can get through to the next)
- Aang being shamed and gaslight by everyone
- confusion over what happened to the villagers as well as Katara and Solla by mixing Hei Bai‘s and Ko‘s stories as well as the Fog of Lost Souls and creating a new loophole into the spirit world when people stand too close to Aang while he meditates? Also, Ko‘s „Magic“ with individuality and his reason for stealing faces when showing emotion is lost.
- with all due love, what was Suki‘s mother for?
- Wan Shi Tong randomly sitting at some wayside
- Why wouldn’t normal people understand Wan Shi Tong? How are they planning for Team Avatar to find out about the solar eclipse if not through Wan Shi Tong‘s library later?
- Iroh suspecting Ozai behind the apparent assassination of Zuko so openly in front of Zhao
- Iroh justifying his war crimes with „I was a soldier“??
- Iroh „sacrificing“ himself in Omashu when the earth kingdom forces were looking for the firebender even though they both would’ve gone undetected otherwise
- Iroh killing Zhao
- does Momo carry the spirits‘ life now?
- the fire nation inventing a solar system model to predict Zosin‘s Comet and potentially the eclipse as well

Yknow it’s so funny that the live action atla Netflix show was so mediocre that it inspired me to watch the original animated one and now I’m binging the series and slowly being dragged back into the fandom

Had a great time moderating the Mass Effect reunion panel I organized with @ladytoxie and Tali's VA (Ash Sroka). The cast is such an amazing and fun group of people to interact with, and it was just a very special experience for everyone to be together and talk about a game series we all love so much with some of its characters. As this is the first panel I have moderated EVER, I have also been so moved by the amount of people who have told me they had a wonderful time, including the actors.
Guests from left to right are Courtenay Taylor (Jack), William Salyers (Mordin), me lol, LT, Keythe Farley (Thane), Kimberly Brooks (Ashley but also Jasper yas), Ash Sroka (Tali), and a friend of ours who is cosplaying EDI.
A full video of it will be posted soon!
Photos are also by @catiecat_art on Instagram!

The live action avatar giveth (added zuko and Iroh backstory scenes, prominent sokka arc, shirtless Daniel dae Kim) and it taketh away (no righteously angry katara, aang literally never waterbending in the water season, separating the gaang too often to cover multiple arcs)

Begging you all to watch the show without the m•rthur lens, because all sense of who these characters even are has been lost here.
#bbc merlin#merlin meta#tag meta#my meta#fandom critical#arthur critical#woobify much?#you will all just see whatever you wanna see huh. even if it is this disturbing. even if it is this dehumanizing. and all of it romanticized#also arthur doesn’t trust too much. or else maybe he’d legalize magic 🤪 his trust clearly doesn’t extend to the people he’s oppressing#arthur’s problem is nepotism! his problem is that he always trusts what is most comfortable for him to believe!#and most of the time he only looks as far as he is affected on a personal level!#he cares if someone /shows/ him the effects but it’s as gwen says… he shouldn’t need someone to hold his hand through being a decent person.#he’s not a child. and as prince he is supposed to have an even greater responsibility in this area.#anyways arthur has absolutely disagreed with people he trusts and stood his ground when he thinks it’s right. he has a mind of his own.#if he believed that his actions were truly wrong then he simply wouldn’t do them. we have seen this in action.#and this isn’t even touching on the merlin side of things. merlin did not cause arthur’s death.#you can scream it all you want but arthur’s bigotry is his alone. he chooses to lean into it again and again. arthur always has a choice.#it’s not that merlin didn’t ‘do enough’ to ‘fix’ him. wiping clean any accountability for arthur and putting it all on merlin’s shoulders#simply because merlin is one of those oppressed people and so ‘knows better’ (arthur already knows that magic isn’t inherently harmful-#-he chooses to believe that it corrupts people because it’s an easier guilt-free explanation)#…blaming merlin for arthur’s preference towards anti-magic sentiment is sick. arthur and merlin are their own individual people.#merlin is loyal to arthur because he sees his potential for the goodness that will unite albion and give his people a future.#arthur is his only hope. he’s battling tooth and nail with all these prophecies. ffs.#you cannot understand this series or these characters or their relationship dynamics in any way that matters#without first recognizing them as individuals and as people. people with different values motives approaches etc.#also the fact merlin is arthur’s servant and ‘happy’ to deal with his classism is inextricable from this#tw eye sore#tw hypnosis#tw unreality#tw delusion bait

J.L. Laynesmith taking the 'Buckingham Did It™' route for the murder of the Princes in the Tower AND the rumors of Edward IV's bastardy ... I have to laugh
#my post#history media#this was in her book 'Cecily Duchess of York' which I have ... Thoughts on#I really liked it overall - it was meticulously researched and gave me information that I hadn't previously known about Cecily#However this often contrasts with Laynesmith's own very evident biases assumptions and conjecture#and the effect is very jarring#This becomes slightly more pronounced after 1464 and actually ridiculous after 1483.#She also suggests that Henry VI may have genuinely died of a melancholy-induced stroke like Edward IV claimed which is just...lmfao#I don't know what to say at this point lol#To be fair she does specifically note that he died shortly after Edward arrived in London and that most contemporaries believed#it was far too convenient#which is far more acknowledgement and culpability than she gives Richard III whose culpability for the 'disappearance' of his nephews is#literally never touched upon - the blame is conveniently dumped on Buckingham#honestly the whole Deal with Buckingham is so odd. dude was a political neophyte; was given a primarily ceremonial role by Edward IV#throughout his reign and was younger than Richard (who was a seasoned politician). What makes you think Buckingham of all people#was some kind of political genius and making decisions over RICHARD of all people lol?#anyway#This book was pretty decent with Margaret of Anjou which was great#it was less decent with Elizabeth Woodville which was not so great :/#some of the assumptions it made (for Cecily's benefit naturally) were so weird#and the way she 'reassessed' Elizabeth's role in 1483 was very distasteful#I might make a separate post on that because it was very annoying#(also claiming Henry Tudor landed with 'a small band of Lancastrian exiles' - yeah no. the majority of the 'exiles' who supported him were#Yorkist aka Edward IV's supporters who opposed Richard. because this was very much an internal civil war between the dynasty#and Henry became a claimant only after being chosen by Yorkists after the October risings made clear the Princes were dead#the claim that challenged Richard's was Elizabeth of York not Henry's. let's not twist words here)#(ALSO I'm sorry but William Stanley certainly did not choose to commit his troops to Henry Tudor because Henry was 'his brother's stepson'#he did that out of loyalty to Edward IV and his children as Henry was the chosen claimant of the Yorkist faction#hence why he may have betrayed Henry VII in the 1490s for Perkin Warbeck who pretended to be Edward's second son. so jot that down)#you really see these small minor details which are very much chosen purposefully and paint a very different picture lol

What isekai are you reading if you don’t mind me asking?
Tumblr media
okay... but youre not allowed to make fun of me... its called "50 tea recipes from the duchess." korean woman gets fired, gets isekai'd into the body of a duchess who is timid to the point of patheticness and everybody fuckin hates her. is like uggghh well i dont care if im hated as long as i have my special interest: TEA. and with her autistic girl swag (label pending) she makes both the society and her cold intimidating husband love her. 70% of it is her infodumping about tea to the delight of everyone around her.
#ask me no questions and ill tell you no lies#started reading it on tapas bc i was bored and it was free. embarrassingly got invested.#more uhh romance isekai? rather than like an action based one. its cute enough. not really groundbreaking but i like the FL.#we did manage to achieve a conversation between the protag and her body swapped soul so that was fun.#generally i dont support ppl who go on abt art that they only engage w for mindless fun or whatever bc theyre usually talking abt fuckin.#idk marvel movies or the latest army propaganda films or whatever. and generally the media they talk abt verges to harmful.#but i am an avid supporter of reading dumb shit you know is silly. all art has value including stupid stuff.#other dumb stuff ive read: at least two ~sexier~ manga/manhwa. former had surprisingly decent world building.#latter had an INCREDIBLY TOXIC cast of characters. it was absolutely fascinating.#those are the more embarrassing ones and the ones i WONT be dropping titles for.#others include furry shoujo isekai; aromantic shoujo; mousou telepathy (ive mentioned that before)#gag comedy where a dude gets ~magicked~ into a girls body but the joke is hes so lazy that he doesnt give a shit (mood)#stupid bl manga with a hot fat character who is very much the main object of desire#a lot of it is manga/manhwa bc its easier to get into something kinda dumb if its bolstered by having nice visuals rather than like a book#or whatever where you have to slog through it with your imagination alone. even when reading 'dumb' art i try to engage it properly bc i#very sincerely believe that every story has some form of meaning if youre just willing to engage with it#(<- plot of orv btw for an ACTUALLY good story)#like i said the sexi manga has surprisingly good worldbuilding. the toxic story the sexu manhwa was telling was earnestly fascinating.#idk! sorry i know you were just looking for the name but while i do consider it just kinda silly its broader impact has a deep effect on me#this is why i love orv❤️ please read orv. while i already had these fond feelings prior to reading orv it really cemented it for me.#oh and i read romance novels sometimes. i like stuff thats cute and silly! idk. youve been on my blog you can see my icon this isnt news.

Supermassive games made something that was almost perfect and then decided to make several much worse things before reeling it back to something decent that makes the same damn mistake the first game made without any of the first game’s charm and cleverness to make up for it. Like you’ve had the time to figure out this professional video game thing maybe you should start acting like it lol
#ra speaks#personal#sorry I’ve been in an until dawn mood lately and it’s like. gosh they were so close to making a game I could unironically say was amazing#their major flaw was the appropriation of Native American culture (like they could have been generic cannibal monsters you didn’t have to#call them that to make them scary that monster design was on point)#and then. in the quarry. which I dare to say is a decent sequel to until dawn.#MAKES THE SAME DAMN MISTAKE OF STEREOTYPING OOOO SPOOKY ROMANI TAROT MAGIC#like bruh do you. do you even call up somebody from the demographics you’re representing#and be like hey is this fucked up or nah?#like you’re a professional studio that’s a real thing you can do#and I don’t like the new cut scenes in until dawn they were PART of the story not some separate entity from it#anyways rant abt the bad stuff over gosh until dawn had such a fantastic story. the reveal and the twist are unparalleled.#literally my only issue is the monster cultural aspect like that’s such a solid game and story#and I guess the treatment of josh as a character but tbh the story of it seems fairly logical#these people got my sisters killed. I’m going to scare the hell out of them as revenge. no one will get physically hurt.#like yeah I would do that too dude. especially if I had a family background in film and practical effects.#and tbf his friends react pretty realistically for kids not knowing how to handle their friend having#a legitimate mental health crisis that stems from undiagnosed and erroneously medicated psychosis/schizophrenia#in addition to being hunted by literal monsters#the quarry was fun and campy the way until dawn was but there was no iconic bait and switch and also an antagonist uses the g slur so like#sorry it’s objectively not as good of a story

so I saw the Five Nights at Frederick’s movie last night, mostly for shits and gigs. quick thoughts:
pretty dogshit narrative and character writing. incoherent at times. insufferable characters as plot devices.
a couple of the lore bits made my eyebrows raise. lots of potential sequelbaiting. Matpat is there.
very solid practical effects that are very fun and physical. the actors for the animatronics sold it incredibly well. some minor occasions of questionable CGI but only like 1 or 2.
The villain is hot. Sorry. Fantastic physical acting when he’s in the suit. Surprising swerve into body horror at the end. Good shit.
Overall a super safe and not overly scary adaption that’s very noticeably and distractingly PG-13 and probably ideal for that exact age group as a “baby’s first horror movie”
They should have let Freddy say fuck.

@quick-drawn sent:ㅤ[ hiding ] sender finds out that receiver has hidden an injury from them — oh, even better
non-verbal angst promptsㅤㅤ∘ ˚ ( accepting )
Tumblr media
ㅤsneaking into the bar through the back has become a fairly common practice since they've started hanging around the place more regularly, though usually it's reserved for the times where, for some reason or another, they'd rather not be noticed right away. times like tonight, for instance. slinking out from the area labelled 'employees only,' byan beelines for the most secluded corner table and drops themself unceremoniously into the nearest seat. exhausted and in a good amount of pain, they proceed to slump forward over the table, one arm sweeping into place to separate their forehead from the hard surface. the other arm is left very purposefully curled over their lap, out of view.
while not entirely sure of how long they sit there like that, or when exactly they were first noticed, at some point, inevitable as always, they hear the unmistakeable approach of those godawful boots. they'd recognize the sound of those horrid things anywhere.
ㅤㅤ" 'm'fine. "ㅤanswering the question before it can be asked, the hand on the table raises as though to wave cassidy and his nosy concern away.ㅤ" just need t' rest for a few more minutes. i'll be outta your hair 'fore you finish closin' up, don't worry about it. "
for a second, they think it worked. but a second is all it takes for them to notice the uncomfortable sensation of liquid sliding over the skin of their fingers and, presumably, dripping to the floor beneath the table. the liquid, they're sure, is red, and something tells them they're not the only one who noticed as, in the next second, the weight of a large hand finds their shoulder.
ㅤㅤ" don't touch me! "ㅤa shout, an honest one, brought on by the surprise of the contact. with it, byan shoves themself upright, arm that isn't bleeding swinging wide to shake that contact, to break it for themself if they have to. continued blood loss has taken its toll, however, sapping a fair amount of their energy and strength. not only do they fail to shove cassidy's arm away, but their scrambling, clumsy movements also fail to stop him from gaining hold of their injured arm. hissing and spitting curses, the fiery teen flails in an effort to pull free, but he's a grown man with a solid hold on their arm, bent forward enough to block their free limb from interfering with his inspection as he lifts the other up onto the table. there's not much hope of tearing away unless he makes a mistake.
ㅤㅤ" fuckin'— get off'a me! "ㅤnow pounding their fist against the bartender's back with all the strength they can muster, byan's eyes are wild. they feel him pull the sleeve of their jacket up, revealing the makeshift bandage made from the torn sleeve of their shirt, which is now soaked in red, and slam their fist harder. they knew they should have just gone straight to lena's to make use of her first aid kit instead of stopping here for a rest, dizziness be damned. this was a mistake, they knew it when they sneaked in, and they regret it as they continue to shove at cassidy's side.
Tumblr media
ㅤㅤ" s'none of your business! "ㅤhissing at cassidy as he instructs the sole remaining customer to go into the back and bring him the first aid kit, they find it oh so tempting to reach for one of the many knives on their person — the only thing that stops them is the voice in the back of their head reminding them that this is lena's friend, and that she won't take kindly to them stabbing him. ...fine, a less damaging form of attack, then! lunging their face forward in the ongoing efforts to get this asshole off of them, byan sinks their teeth into the shoulder that's right in front of them. a sense of satisfaction rises from the startled exclamation the bite earns but, in the state they're in, a mere shrug is enough to make them release their hold with a frustrated noise.
ㅤㅤ" i'll kill you, "ㅤthey threaten, despite now sinking back into their chair, head tipping against it for support as their eyes close over. hearing the sounds of another pair of feet hurrying over, likely with the first aid kit in hand, byan sucks a sharp breath through grit teeth and gives a final tug of their injured arm.ㅤ" th' moment... —the moment i can see straight again, you're fuckin' dead, got that? "

Huh.
I'm already getting a good amount of response to today's polls, and now as usual I come to realize in hindsight that my wording of the questions might be affecting how people are voting.
I've really got to be better about that.
