It was never explicitly said but The Doctor meeting Donna was absolutely a fixed point in time. The alternate universe quite literally fell apart because they didn’t meet.
Donna is just that good

did the whole bi-generation thing make any sense whatsoever? no. do i give a shit? also no! my favorite characters got to have their fix-it fic ending where they're together and healing and happy, idgaf how dubious the semantics were, whatever rtd has to pull out of his ass to make it happen is fine by me

I want to meet my queerplatonic partner the old fashioned way (they are mysteriously teleported into my time machine on their wedding day)

love that even with the metacrisis suppressed and everything, Donna (and Rose) were still getting the Doctor's memories in their dreams. like they both referenced stuff that happened weeellllllll after he mind wiped Donna. there was always still that subconscious connection there. and I'm wondering. if it worked in reverse. like we know the Doctor puts off sleeping for as long as possible so do you think they ever passed out for the first time in a month only to be bombarded with images of Nerys causing a fucking SCENE at Donna's baby shower. I'm imagining like, 12 accidentally mind melding with Rose one night and waking up in a cold sweat like 'I have to cut bangs right now or else I'll kill myself' and River just barely managed to talk him out of it. 14 now remembers every single little spat Donna and Shaun have ever gotten in and he has Opinions. oh my God, what if fish fingers and custard was just a crazy pregnancy craving.

If I had a nickel for every time the Doctor had a sassy ginger companion he referred to as his best friend, and then said ginger companion had a daughter whose name begins with R (and was not the name they were born with) and this daughter even though human, has certain time lord characteristics due to complex plot reasons, I’d have two nickels. Which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice.

But it's the way the Doctor loves Donna. He didn't even care that the psychedelic light U.N.I.T soldiers were there with orders to kill them. He thought his best friend, the most important woman in the whole of creation, was dead. And the only thing that he says is "Do what you want. This ship isn't going anywhere. You were beaten. By the DoctorDonna." In the end, they were together. Just like old times. I-

thinking about David Tennant's Doctor
and how he repeatedly cheated regeneration
first he regenerated into himself. like "nope, not happening. no way. I'm still me."
and then the metacrisis happened where it was essentially him and Donna cheating death. she would have died in that lava but she didn't because the Doctor was there, cheating once again, a new Doctor, a more human one.
and then there were the times when he should have died but didn't. the Rachnoss (an instance where Donna saved him). 42. when he fell from the sky and stood up with hardly a scratch. plenty more I can't think of at the moment.
and then when he finally does regenerate, after putting it off for so long, after the loneliness, it's because of Wilf. because he had to save him.
and he says his goodbyes. and the Ood sing him to sleep, because they have to, because he would never stop fighting, to the point of destruction. and even then he still doesn't want to go.
and then there's Fourteen. Fourteen who does his best to embrace his emotions and be happy because of what he's learned since he last wore that face, but he's so so tired.
and how this time, this time he's had this face back for hardly a few days, and he finally lets himself go.
but he still cheats death.
because this time, this time it's the universe that screams no, no, I'm not done with you yet.
and he bi-regenerates instead. because maybe he was cheating death for a reason. maybe the universe was saying that whole time, you need to rest. and he just wasn't ready. he wasn't ready to rest until he was ready to die. and that's when he got his reward. that's when he was able to go home.
because he wasn't just defeating the toymaker. he was defeating himself. his own pride.
and I think that for the Doctor, that's infinitely more difficult than cheating death.
and I think that's very telling. and I think it's representative of humans, too.
because sometimes it's a hell of a lot easier to die, or conversely, to defy what the world is screaming at you, than allowing yourself to rest.

Just re-watched journeys end and was reminded just how devastating Donna’s story is. I mean her whole character arc was erased in a second all because she touched a hand in a jar. Don’t get me wrong it was amazing to watch but it’s still just so sad.
She spent her life being told she was a disappointment and a failure, then this spaceman comes into her life and tells her she’s amazing and important and she finally starts to think that maybe just maybe she is important and she can be amazing and the whole universe knows her name. Then it was ripped from her, the knowledge, the love, the confidence, her best friend was taken away from her and she would never know it (until the special of course, but let’s ignore that for a sec)
When she wakes back up it’s really shocking to see just how much she had changed, even her voice was a little different.

Is the fact that she has got about 50 apples in her fruit bowl some sort of pun about how she hasn’t interacted with the doctor in about 5479 days
