Meeting the Parents
(After In the Afterlight)
Even though Ruby has technically met Harry and Grace through phone calls and that one fateful night at Thurmand, she is still unbelievably stressed to actually meet them
Maybe it's because she's scared they will blame her for the death of Cole or maybe just because it is their sons girlfriend and they have a right to be protective over him
Even after her and Liams phone call last night when he promised that they already love her and they barely have even met her
When she gets to the hotel where the conference is being held, she is constant on look out watching for either Liam or his parents
Baby time skip- After they get back from their last joy ride- the parents/guardians found each other (they've been in contact the last few days) to search for the kids because everyone is worried about the kids new found fame- especially Ruby
The parents meet right outside where Liam parks his parents car and each of the parent/guardian has a different facial expression on
Liam's parents: excitement mixed with stress mixed with grief
Ruby's parents: PURE stress and fear because Ruby forgot to tell them where she was going
Cate: motherly disappointment in the group but so so so proud of how far they came
Chub's parents: bliss that chubs finally did something minorly idiotic
And of course as she is getting out of the car, Ruby trips on her cast and she is mortified that she just fell on her ass infront of all the parents and now can't get up.
she just sits there.
she then realizes she should definitely get up and so she tries but its no use and just as all of the parents are about to say something, here comes her night in shining armor to lift her up and kiss her on her cheek. IN FRONT OF THEIR PARENTS
She is actually mortified and so embarrassed until, "I think you could walk better without the cast on and half dying," and Harry chuckled, "you really do do better under pressure, Cole was right"
Just that caused Ruby to be 10x better about everything

ok my friends know i love to talk shit about tdm (despite me working on a fic set in its universe for almost a year). it’s a hobby at this point. I find a lot of it to be based around very little substance/commentary, and I think some topics were handled poorly (That Scene in ITA).
however that being said i read sparks rise and it broke me a little i think. sorry alexandra bracken for being mean to you can you take away that ending now :(((

TDM QUOTES!!
I’ll start off this post by asking what your favourite quote from the series is.
I’ll go first:
“The most important thing you ever did was learn how to survive.”
“you have to walk out of here. not just for them, but for yourself. you have to walk out of here on your own two feet.”

Opinion: Ruby and Chubs in The Darkest Minds
This is my absolute favourite book series and I think it should be talked about more because its one of the more interesting, deeper YA dystopians.
Anyhoo I love Ruby and Chubs friendship, and I think it needs to be talked about more. My favourite trope is enemies to BFFs as you all know and Ruby and Chubs kind of follow that story. In the beginning obviously Chubs feels threatened by Ruby's presence but they both grow to quickly understand each other and I adore that scene in the walmart when both of them realise that the radio station shows where east river is and they are talking about their fears and stuff.
But it gets better in east river where they kind of bond, both being quiet and more reserved towards people. Chubs trusts Ruby who in turn trusts him. Ruby admits that she understands Chubs in a way that Zu and Liam, both extroverts, don't. When they reunite in Never Fade its so fricking wholesome and I love that and also when Ruby kind of gives Chubs the motherly talk when he finishes "building shelves" with Vida. I just love them and they're my BROTP for sure. They understand each other in a way not even the rest of the gang do.

Did We...Need This?
I am honestly pissed at Alexandra Bracken for writing this book. I loved the series before The Darkest Legacy and even though I did not hate this last book, reading this darkened my feelings towards this series now.
First things first, the pacing for this book was agonisingly slow. It felt like I had to read a hundred pages of nothing much happening nor developing to get a minute of action before I get back to another hundred pages of nothing much. I get it, Zu did not trust Roman and Priyanka. Roman and Priyanka did not trust Zu either. I got that very early on in the book, Bracken did not need to waste so much time developing nothing just because of that mistrust. The pacing really could have gone faster.
Also, Zu... *sigh* According to Bracken, this book took a while to be written because she was unsure of who to tell the story through. I did not like that Zu was the chosen one. This grown version of Zu got on my nerves way too many times, I was irritated by her and I loved Zu in the past. Throughout The Darkest Legacy, I just kept thinking why pick Zu? Then I think I realised why when I finished the book and had time to digest. I think Zu was only chosen to tell this story because with the way this story was moving, it could only be Zu. No one else could have brought her old squad and Roman + Priyanka together.
Even though I had a lot of issues with this book, I did like what Bracken was trying to tell readers of this series. I am someone who feels bored with a happy ending. What can I say? Ambiguous endings send me on a high all the time. I loved that Bracken was like "hell no you think a political problem like that will have a happy ending for everybody". The fact that she made Ruby wake up but we do not know if there were any lingering problems to what was done to Ruby? Or that Clancy Gray is out in the wild again. Yeah, I did seriously like that. Except, I am hoping she is done with this series, no more books for The Darkest Minds series, please.
Rating: ★★★☆☆

Reds Power Theory
I have a theory about Reds and their powers. So, we know that Oranges have different abilities (Ruby can manipulate and extract memories, Clancy can control people entirely, Martin could manipulate how people felt) and similarly Greens could be highly intelligent, technologically skilled, photographic memory, etc. But, then Blues and Yellows and Reds don’t get talked about much on the various extents of their powers.
Based on what I’ve gathered about the few Reds we did get introduced to, Cole and Lucas can create and manipulate fire and  Mason could manipulate fire that was around him. Therefore, I’ve thought about some of the various ways in which a Reds power can develop.
Fire Creation
Fire Manipulation
Whether it be their own or that created from a separate source. Although I don’t believe they can manipulate the fire of another Red
Depending they may even be able to manipulate the temperature of fire making it hotter or even as a defensive and putting out the fire by reducing the heat
Fire Breathing
Mainly due to the movie, but I still think it is a very probable power considering the one Orange had to speak to use their power
Fire Resistance/Repulsion
Cole’s own fire didn’t burn him in Never Fade, but the fire of the other Reds in In the Afterlight did. Therefore, I believe they have the potential ability to develop a fire proof power
Body Heat Manipulation
Raising or lowering their body temperature. This could be helpful in cases where they are out on a cold terrain they could use their body heat to prevent themselves or their companions from getting hypothermia or frostbite. They may even be able to hide themselves from heat sensors when being tracked by PSFs.

What do you think would have happened if Claire Stewart had survived iaan?
My first ask!! Sorry for taking so long <3
I feel like if that we’re the case, Liam would make her his number one priority while Cole would still have her as a priority, but more so like his relationship with Liam. The two brothers would definitely clash over what they think is right for her with Liam wanting to find somewhere safe (rip East River), and Cole would want her to join the League (though I could see him potentially letting Liam take her, if that’s what was safest).
My money’s on her being a blue. My reasoning is vibes and vibes alone.
She and Zu would be so close, it’s unbelievable. While this may cause some issues with the canon storyline in the sense that Zu bonded so closely with Ruby over the fact that there weren’t any other girls in her life, I feel like the three of them would still get REALLY close.
LIAM WOULD CALL CLAIRE AND RUBY HIS LADIES!!
THAT’S ALL I GOT FOR NOW BUT MAYBE MORE IN THE FUTURE??

The Darkest Legacy by Alexandra Bracken
"'We've inherited the darkest legacy, but they don't know that we've learned how to thrive in shadows and create our own light.'"
Year Read: 2023
Rating: 3/5
About: There are spoilers ahead for The Darkest Minds series. Five years after the destruction of the camps, Suzume has found a place working as the Psi spokesperson for the government. When she's blamed for a deadly attack at one of her speeches, she's forced to go on the run with two other Psi. The more Zu tries to uncover what really happened, the less she trusts her new companions, and the deeper the conspiracy seems to go. Psi once again teeter on the edge of having more of their rights stripped away, and Zu will have to figure out how to use her voice to save them. Trigger warnings: child death, human trafficking, child abuse, implied torture, concentration camps, nonconsensual surgery/hospital horror, neglect, severe injury, violence, guns.
Thoughts: While The Darkest Minds wasn't one of my favorite YA series, I always enjoyed Zu as a character and was excited to see her have her own book. All in all, this is a bit of a letdown, and it mostly just reminded me of all the reasons I didn't enjoy the original books, the biggest of which are the length and pacing. It's long-winded and wordy, and it could just as easily be titled Zu and the Endless Road Trip. The United States is a big damn country, and it takes forever to get from one place to another by car, especially for characters who are trying to go under the radar. There's far too much time spent dragging them from one location to another, and some of the beginning setup could have been mightily streamlined. It takes roughly two hundred pages just to get to the first place, and they stay for about five minutes before they're on the road again.
It's also quite dramatic and angsty in the way of some YA fiction, which isn't bad in itself, just a reminder that I'm no longer a part of this target audience. Being in Zu's head isn't a lot different from being in Ruby's, and there's a lot of wallowing and guilt. I have zero feelings about any of the new characters and only mild feelings about the recurring ones. That being said, I do think there's a nice arc for Zu as far as development goes, and it's satisfying to see her discover her place between politics and rebellion. There's an interesting theme running throughout the novel about whether a system can be fixed from the inside by those who have always been marginalized by it, and I like that it doesn't come down on either extreme. Real changes happens slowly, both inside and outside. Despite the rambling length, the ending feels quite rushed after all that. I wouldn't recommend it for any but the most avid fans of the series.
