You stared at the bed, your side was unmade but his side was still tucked in neatly. Even after all this time you couldn’t bring yourself to starfish in the middle of the bed, plus you liked that his pillow still smelled like him.
Twisting your hands together you let out a faint squeal because Fives was coming home. You had waited so long for this, for him. He had contacted you recently, not able to divulge details obviously, but he’d been granted some leave after a short stay on Kamino. He had reassured you he was ok and in one piece and he’d see you soon.
So you kept yourself busy. Trying not to dwell on when he’d come barging through the front door, arms thrown wide to envelope you in an all encompassing hug.
It had been three days of radio silence now, it wasn’t unusual, so you refused to give into the idea that something had happened. If it had, Rex would tell you straight away.
Humming along to some music on the holonet you made sure everything was tidy and in its place. Most of the time you didn’t care and neither did Fives. You grinned a little as you imagined his clothes thrown all over the floor, he said he felt free here; away from the war, away from the rules, regulations and endless protocols. And you let him express in anyway he wanted. When you first got together it quickly became apparent he was very tactile, always hugging you, searching out your fingertips to imprint on his skin and never getting bored of the sensation. It was one of the many, many things you adored about Fives.
Sitting on the sofa you could see the sun dipping beyond the high Coruscant skyline and your good mood ebbed just a little. Brushing a hand over the cushion to clear some imaginary dirt, you let loose a disappointed sigh. If he didn’t arrive soon, it wouldn’t be today and the waiting would continue.
You never told him how much you missed him while he was away. You already knew what sort of pressure the distance put on him, so you plastered on that smile and laughed through each holocall. He did the same for you, his eyes conveying messages you didn’t need words for.
Fives was everything you needed, you had hoped this war would end soon and then maybe you could run away together; some unknown planet in the Outer Rim and own a farm. Part of you knew he’d never do that, he’d never leave his brothers, but you could dream.
A knock on the door had you leaping up.
This was it! Fives was home, he was here and you were going to melt into his embrace. He was going to smell slightly different but soon he’d smell like you anyway. Smoothing down your outfit you felt like your heart was going to burst with joy. It made your hands shake and your breath catch.
Fives was home.
The door slid open and you looked straight into a pair of brown eyes you knew so well, features you could draw with your eyes shut, a face recognised all over the Galaxy. Your heart stilled and a dull ache started in your chest, pushing up your throat to burn the back of your mouth.
He came forward, his helmet tucked under his arm and you saw your own emotions mirrored in his glassy gaze. He looked exactly like your Fives, except he wasn’t, not even close. His hair was the wrong colour, his expression was different, his eyes held too much gold, there were too many lines on his face…
“No.” Rex reached for you, grief pulling at his features when a dry sob worked its way out of your chest. His shadow was long, darkening your doorway as the sun continued to drop, a silhouette you so desperately wanted to belong to someone else.
You wish you hadn’t opened the door. Opening the door made this real, opening the door made everything change for the worst. This wasn’t happening, it just wasn’t. You refused to accept you weren’t dreaming. Maybe if you went back to bed to try and wake yourself up…
Rex followed. He’d seen it before, the abject denial right before the claws of grief really took hold. It never got easier. No matter how hard he tried he still held every one of his brother’s deaths inside him, if he let them go they ceased to exist and he wouldn’t let that happen. Not Hardcase, not Echo, not…not Fives.
You scream shattered the silence, face contorted with pain as your mind began to fully process why he was here. He hated this, hated doing this to his brothers mates, breaking their lives apart with the worst news.
He could feel the rise of his own emotions, the tears that he still hadn’t shed because he had a duty. He had an example to set and, above all else, he had to see you through this. Fives would never forgive him otherwise.
Fives…he still wasn’t really sure what happened, he’d tried to access reports but he was locked out. Something awful surrounded Fives and he kicked himself for not seeing it sooner. When your questions started he only hoped he could give you decent enough answers.
Shards so slick and sharp felt like they were working their way free from between your ribs. You were bleeding out, your soul spilling as you mourned the one man you had ever loved with every fibre of your being. Never again would Fives let himself in and put his helmet on the table. Never again would you help take his armour off and fall into his embrace. Never again would Fives whisper how much he loved the touch of your skin or kiss you like he was a man drowning and you were his breath of fresh air.
Your hand curled into fists. Already his face was fading from your memories, the scent of him was disappearing from your bed; Fives was leaving you and it was the most painful thing you’d ever experienced.
“I’m so sorry.” The three most hideous words uttered with so much feeling had you turning round. Tears tracked down your cheeks, hot with the sorrow that wracked your body. Rex looked crushed, his eyes staring at a point over your shoulder as he struggled to keep himself together. For you. For Fives.
With shaking hands you reached for him, wanting to seek comfort from someone who felt like Fives. If you squeezed your eyes closed tight enough and ignored the burning sensation within, it was like Fives was here.
But as soon as you sobbed, breathing Rex in, your tentative delusion was splintered. No one else could ever come close to Fives. Rex dropped his helmet, catching you under the arms and sinking with you to the floor. His fingers buried deep into your clothes, seeking comfort from you in the same way you were from him.
His armour was cool on your feverish skin, rock hard and unyielding as you broke against it time and time again until you had nothing left inside. Rex held you the whole time, preserving the moment because neither of you wanted to move on from this point. Every second was a lifetime stretching before you, a lifetime without your funny, chaotic, playful Fives.
The colour of Rex’s pauldron burned into the back of your eyes. It tormented you with its simplicity. Such a calming colour that had once brought much comfort to you was now one you despised. Closing your eyes you pushed away from Rex.
He knew the signs, he could tell when someone had reached a point they couldn’t look at him anymore. His face was too familiar, yet wrong at the same time. Retrieving his helmet he looked at the inside before slipping it over his head and hiding what was hurting you.
It wasn’t just his features that made you want to scream out loud, it was that damn colour. It was shouting at you, hurting you, screaming it’s torment in your face. You wanted him to leave because the colour blue…
The colour blue—hurt.
