Canyon moon

When introducing Canyon Moon in the one night only performance harry said was written at Tom (kid harpoon) and Jenny’s house L.A. in January 2018. Jenny in the song is Tom’s wife and Harry dedicated it to her:

Longing for home and domestic life

The lyrics refer to Jenny and Tom’s settled life with kids as a dream when compared to leaving his beloved to tour:

“Sky never looked so blue So hard to leave it That's what I always do So I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moon The world's happy waiting Doors yellow, broken, blue I heard Jenny saying "Go get the kids from school" And I keep thinking back to A time under the canyon moon I'll be gone too long from you”

Remembering lyrics

Harry talks about sharing love of music and not remember lyrics which reminds us of his temper trap tattoo. After the bridge the song ends with ‘looking back’ because the relationship didn’t survive his journey. :

Dulcimer

To Rolling Stone Harry spoke about the influence of Joni Michell’s Blue for Canyon Moon: “he and Kid Harpoon tracked down Joellen Lapidus, the woman who built Mitchell’s dulcimer for Blue. She not only made one for Harry, she gave him and Kid Harpoon their first dulcimer lesson at her house.”

Between 3-4 March 2012 Taylor Swift wrote "Nothing New" for Red. She'd just learned to play the Appalachian dulcimer because that's what her hero Joni Mitchell played on Blue. Swift penned this song on a flight from Perth using the instrument, inspired by Mitchell's "A Case Of You." Thank you @mynkno

Laurel Canyon, Joni Mitchell

The canyon is likely Laurel Canyon where Joni Mitchell lived while dating Graham Nash. At the height of their fame in the 70’s Joni and Nash had a strong attraction, broke up and wrote many songs about the heartbreak, including Blue.

California has a similar meaning to Canyon Moon. Joni sings of being weary from travelling in Europe after breaking up with Nash, longing for home in California and includes hoping he will take her as she is ‘strung out on another man’ (breaks my heart every time)

Harry owned a Hollywood Hills house near laurel Canyon, from 2016 which was for sale when he wrote this. The song was written at Toms house ‘around the corner’.

TS also owned a house in the area 2012-2018 which he visited before leaving to tour and she sold the year this was written (to buy another in LA).

In his interview with Zane Lowe about the album at 38:45 in Harry talks about his relationship with California changing and it never being home.

Summary

Canyon moon is bittersweet about a relationship with someone who has a shared love of music, harry gives two outcomes:

The reference to Joni and Nash are a couple who are driven to succeed as famous musicians. Passion and leaving LA to tour were challenges and the relationship ended, as happened in the relationship he is looking back on,

The reference to Jenny show a different path, Harry is daydreaming about having stayed in LA and having domestic bliss with someone who shares his love of music.

The song is about what could have been and missing the relationship rather than place.

one of the things about where are your boys tonight i really appreciated and, to me, seemed like the most significant thrust of the book (but never garnered much attention, imo), was the focus on the business side of things and particularly the way the many bands never saw long term success or stability or the way a lot of very young people were taken advantage of even after making their labels and handlers metric butt-tones of money and this really culminated with the discussion about paramores record deal and the inherently coercive nature of making a 14 year old sign a record deal (not even really mentioning that record deal was 20 fucking years lmao) and yet i still see people argue she was an industry plant or whatever. sorry ig one of my fatal flaws is i give child stars the benefit of the doubt considering the fundamental exploitation necessary for that position to exist or whatever

#sorry was thinking about this bc I saw some truly horrible and dismissive posts on twitter about hayleys contract #but i also think it dovetails into the general malaise that existed in the third wave that a lot of places are quick to dismiss #idk. i keep thinking about how so many ppl were taken advantage of (in the sense of predatory contracts or not getting paid victory style)#and how many are stuck in an endless loop of diminishing returns in order to be career musicians who can actually support themselves #and fundamentally this is the key linchpin in the emo nostalgia- some of the btier andlower bands Need stuff like #emo nites or wwwy to actually make a living (no matter how much you make up front a altrock hit single cannot sustain someone as livelihood)#and since touring is the only reliable way to make money. well why put significant expenses into ur new album #none of your fans care about anyway? its a pre-existing cycle. very thrash metal. but its almost worse #when you factor in shit like the fan perception of the used the canyon....#idk ive been thinking about it a lot and i dont find nostalgia circuits reprehensible bc of the fundamental indignities #of the recording industry and all its issues #but its hard to see people shit talk the third wave for being full of impressionable kids hoping to survive of their passion #like you do realize they dont sound like assholes in that circumstance for crashing and burning? right?#(esp when you add mental health and addiction into the mix- these bands were full of sick people being denied care bc it would interfere w/#the 'rawness' or authenticity or whatever the fuck. these bands were having their sadness wrung out of them for money)#anyway i think hayley williams should be allowed to hunt any and all current or former atlantic higherups for sport #my posts

Still working on my project, but wanted to give y'all a little teaser, this is a little over 6 years after the story starts, and can also be read as a standalone.

The Shower Incident ❤️‍🔥🧸

"Alexa, shuffle songs by Harry Styles." You ask of your ai friend who you keep in your giant bathroom. It's after 10 AM, and your boyfriend of almost six years is still zonked out in bed. Yeah, technically the two of you have a lazy day planned (thanks to Auntie Gemma taking your daughter), but still, you have plans. You get in, taking your time, shaving, trimming, the works (lazy days with H always involve sex, ALWAYS!).

You're dancing and singing your heart out, you always do, and more often than not (without you knowing sometimes) H watches you from the doorway. Like he is now during Music for a Sushi Restaurant. He loves it. You're not even doing anything super explicit, just a few hip moves, head bobs, and spins. OH, and the stomps, you love doing the stomps. H probably has at least 150 videos on his phone of you doing the stomps. You even taught Calleigh (your calico cat) and Kiwi (your miniature red merle aussiedoodle) how to do the stomps. To the point where if Satellite starts playing anywhere, Kiwi stops and spins around doing stomps. Cado and Palmer (your other 2 dogs) will sometimes join in too.

Today is one of those days that you know he's watching, and as Music for a Sushi Restaurant ends and Adore You begins, you start getting into it, over the top, drop it like it's hot, into it. Which finally entices him into the shower with you. So when Canyon Moon comes on, you butt yourself up against his chest, wrap your arms around his neck and grind away, slowly, very slowly, your only purpose right now is to taunt him. Something you continue as that song fades into Watermelon Sugar and you shave your legs, and trim. Making sure he sees just how wet you are, and not from the shower. H promptly groans, but doesn't move his gaze away while you finish trimming. As soon as you're done though, he is quick to press you into the wall of your shower and kiss you senseless. Reaching back to shut off the water without breaking the kiss. He presses his stiffie against you, just to make you aware of what you always do to him. Then he backs away and towels you both off.

"Your poor cunt needs a good filling, doesn't it love?" He teases, blowing on your clit as he towels off your legs. Tossing the towel to the side he sweeps you up and swiftly walks you both back to bed where he tosses you down gently and hovers over you.

Yeah, you're in for a long day, and you wouldn't trade it for anything.

as much as I do agree with the people saying that toxic positivity is mid and the used can do a lot better, there's really like. no reason for this album to be very good or creative. it's essentially a vent album, they wrote each song in one day, and bert specifically said that they didn't care whether the music was good or not when making it. yes this sort of music does seem like everything bert has always been against, but he's always used music as therapy and if this was a way for the band to express their struggles rather than try to make good art then I don't think we really have a lot of right to compare it to the rest of their discography.

#also it's not like the band hasn't released vent albums before #the canyon exists #and yes that was a lot stronger as an album but it's a different time and issue and headspace so to say #ofc you're allowed to not like the album but i don't think it's right to #judge somebodys form of venting by comparing it to their other work #that being said #some of the songs are absolute bangers and very relateable #toxic positivity #the used #bert mccracken #jepha howard #emo music

i say this as someone who listens to boygenius and their component parts on the reg but.... while I'm enjoying all the photoshoots and things... the record is underwhelming at best

#Like 1) i complained about this with the singles but there's just cheap lyrics #2) i feel esp phoebes tracks are easily identifiable and tbh. Weak #3) it's just. eh. the singles were for the most part the best songs on the album with slight exception #It's like laurel canyon Mitski for me.... A few things I like but overall. eh

So the last unprompted thing I'll say today and stop being dramatic after is that I think the reason Toxic Positivity is falling flat for me is like. A lot of the topic matter is stuff Bert has written about and touched on before in ways that for me evoked more emotion and connection.

Like Dancing With a Brick Wall feels the same song as Make Believe which is the same song as On the Cross lmao. It's not that it's at all bad it's that they have literally done these songs and this subject matter better.

My final thought is kind of as I expected last night: it would be a good album if anyone else did it and my expectations were lower. From them it's just 🤷‍♂️

#like I get it and I don't fault people for liking it but #the over repeated choruses and the shortened form lyrics and the predictable musicality is just not catching me #i remember what it was like listening to all of their albums the first time and. ): even vulnerable got me more the first play #i do think this is still better than vulnerable but shes no artwork or canyon or ilad or st or ocean of the sky #personal

Lacking mostly in seriousness, I think one reason life feels so, so awful is because I don't own a single Jackie DeShannon album (LP or single would be preferable, CD would be more than acceptable) and I still don't own Steeltown by Big Country on vinyl.
