oh my god… The Bone Ships by RJ Barker… was AMAZING.
you know that feeling you get when you’re just totally immersed in a story? that’s exactly how i felt the whole time! especially with some of the music i was listening to as well.
if you like reading about pirates, magic ships, dragons, betrayal, found family, war, loveable characters, creepy monsters, so much adventure, with cool plot twists, then this is the book for you! there’s also a diverse range of personalities between the female characters (which is a breath of fresh air after reading The Stand by Stephen King ngl) and a lot of them are actually physically strong - i’m not talking Black Widow skinny while being a badass fighter strong, but a lot of these women are described as big and muscly, and i don’t see that often. and oh my god you will fall in love with these women (like, Meas Gilbryn can be my shipwife in more ways than one js). also there’s no unnecessary het romances!
i think it’s taken Gideon the Ninth’s place as fav book of the year (so far, since it’s November but i don’t think anything else will top it tbf).
“So you will take me to die with you?” he said. He had seen little that made him believe they had any sort of friendship, but this seemed little thanks for it.
Very, very few media things i consume bring me to tears (mostly because it makes me uncomfortable to show emotions/vulnerability in front of others, and i usually end up watching things with other people). This goes double for books, as i am more likely to cry if i visually see other people cry or just see displays of storng emotion, etc, and i just sort of power through what i'm reading to find out how th story ends.
But, very rarely, and all the more impressive and loved for its rareness, do i read a book that has me so invested in it's characters and the sheer emotional weight of what they stand for or try to accomplish, that i /do/ become overwhelmed with it. The Tide Child triology by R. J. Barker is one such series.
I just finished the final book, The Bone Ships' Wake, and let me tell you I was fighting to keep my eyes clear for the last 7 chapters of the book. The series is set in a beautifully crafted and complex world of seafarring and mystical sea dragons, with a cast of riotous and memorable characters, each as fleshed out and strong as th next.
I wish i could write one of those beautiful book reviews that could really sell you on reading this book seties, but i am unfortunately longwinded without much direction, so i'll save everyone that painful experience. If you are looking for any sort of fantasy series to read outside of the young adult genre, I absolutely and wholeheartedly will shove this book into your hands, babbling incoherently about it's greatness the entire time.
Blurb: For generations, the Hundred Isles have built their ships from the bones of ancient dragons to fight an endless war. The dragons disappeared, but the battles for supremacy persisted. Now, the first dragon in centuries has been spotted in far-off waters, and both sides see a chance to shift the balance of power in their favour...because whoever catches it will win not only glory, but the war.
my absolute favourite thing about the kirk and spock dynamic is that the whole time you’re watching the show spock is gaslighting you into thinking that kirk is this loose canon and spock is paragon of logic keeping his captain on the straight and narrow when its very clearly the other way round. aside from being turned on by everyone and fighting like an old-timey boxer…. kirk is just like.. quite a logical, stable guy. like yeah he rules with his emotions but he’s rarely reckless or erratic, even in situations of immense pressure he’s always calm and measured. sure kirk is unhinged and insane, but we knew that right off the bat. spock on the other hand tries to hide how insanely balls to the walls crazy he is by standing next to jim and hiding all his derangement with logic. i think the reason bones beefs with spock so much because he is the only one who has noticed that spock is an absolutely unhinged individual. (jim is too busy doodling <3 mr jim spock <3 all over his briefings to notice)
sketches of Joron and Meas from The Bone Ships by RJ Barker! This book is AMAZING and even though I’m only halfway through reading, I had to stop and draw the two main characters :’)
Put your life vests on, batten down the hatches, and prepare yourself to be absolutely soaked as Ryan Bergara, Shane Madej, and Coppy dive into the sopping wet world of ships.
