Keep me?
If you don’t want—
Keep me. Keep me.
I can do that.
Remus Lupin was the biggest idiot in the world. And also stupid. And utterly, hopelessly, unbelievably head over heels for the gorgeous lump of muscle and sweet smiles he had left, adorable and asleep, in a Midtown double-wide.
God, he was so fucking dumb.
You better not be on-call tomorrow morning, ‘cause you’re making me breakfast.
His mouth didn’t always run off on him, but when it did, it always did it with a bang. His bouncing knee rattled the broken edge of his seat and made the lady next to him shoot a dirty look across her phone. The subway hustled onward; Remus glanced at his watch and found that time had not, in fact, decided to run backward and that he was, in fact, officially late for his shift.
Shithell.
He wasn’t even given the mercy of an empty kitchenette to slink into after sprinting the three blocks from his stop to the station. “Good morning, sunshine,” Leo cooed with a smile wide enough to be frightening. He oozed the smug confidence of a man who had more than earned the purple smudge peeking out of his shirt collar.
Remus ground his back teeth against the blood rushing to his face and snatched a mug from the cupboards. The coffeemaker juddered a familiar rhythm. Id-i-ot. Id-i-iot. Id-i-ot.
“How was your night?”
“None of your business.”
“I covered your ass for the last—” Leo gave the wall clock an exaggerated look. “—twenty-seven minutes, my goodness. I think I deserve an explanation.”
A prim sip of tea made Remus’ eye twitch. “I overslept.”
“Exciting. You look sore. Sure you’re ambulatory?”
Remus managed to choke down a knee-jerk defense; something in Leo’s glittering eyes told him this situation would not be made better by a description of his rather athletic night. “Yes.”
“Nice hickeys. What is this, a frat house?”
His hand flew to his neck before his mind could catch up. The panic hit first, followed by a chaser of distilled regret. “God—fuck you!” he complained, shaking his hand out as if that would roll back an instant admission of guilt. Leo buried a grin in the rim of his mug and blew steam at him. Remus snatched the coffeemaker up and gave himself a heavyhanded pour. “It was a good night. I overslept. I’m here now.”
“Twenty-seven minutes.”
“…sorry.”
“No, no, this is worth it. Only your lucky-ass self would find the one call-free morning to oversleep.” Leo’s pager (a preference of the chief) gave a light buzz—saved by the bell. He downed his tea in one gulp, patting down his front pockets the way Remus had taught him during his first week. But then Leo paused with one hand on the wall separating the kitchen from the rest of the station. His chin jerked forward. “Nice shirt, by the way. Don’t think I’ve seen that one before.”
Remus looked down at himself and spit a mouthful of coffee straight into the sink.
--
Hey I’m so sorry.
Nope.
Good morning—
Certainly not.
Hey, I’m sorry, I’m stupid and forgot about my shift this morning even though I was on your case about the same thing, so sorry for saying you could keep me and then leaving you in bed. You were too cute to wake up. Also sorry for stealing your shirt.
Remus’ phone dimmed over the open ‘Messages’ app. Sirius’ Instagram bubble had been green on his last break. He let the screen go dark. Boisterous laughter spilled in from the other side of the station and his heart kicked. No, he thought firmly. Sirius’ team. Not Sirius.
Sirius, who probably woke up alone and cold and confused. Hours had come and gone. He definitely hated Remus’ guts by now.
Don’t fuck your coworkers. How many times had he drilled that sentiment into the heads of his rookies? How many times had Moody drilled it into him? Other stations were fair game, open season, free reign, but don’t fuck your coworkers, stupid. And definitely don’t fuck your coworkers stupid.
Remus’ face heated. He forced those thoughts out of his mind. Under his thumbnail, his phone case bent, and he shoved it into his pocket before it could distract him further. The mental highlight reel of Sirius coming apart under him (around him) was no excuse. He knew better. Sleeping with a coworker was a rookie mistake, but this…this was so much worse, because it was Sirius.
It had been so much better, because it was Sirius.
And he had thrown it away. All of it. Sirius would be right not to look at him after this. He’d be right not to want him.
No more thoughts of dark stubble, or spicy cologne, or the clench of thighs around his waist. No more lingering on Sirius’ wayward grins and soft hair through Remus’ fingers, or the steady way his breath puffed over Remus’ skin when he began to fall asleep. If he could just focus on inventory for twenty more minutes—
The siren slit his concentration down the middle.
“Fuck,” he muttered, checking off a last box of sterile gloves before jogging for the door. Leo was dozing in the window seat he had padded for himself a year back and jolted awake when Remus smacked the wall next to his head. “Go time, Knutty, lights and sirens!”
“All EMS personnel, report to rig 6—”
“Inventory?”
Remus grimaced. “Halfway.”
“Why can’t people ever have convenient emergencies?”
“Make sure to send the next flash flood my calendar availability, yeah?”
They took the corner tight, sneakers squeaking on the concrete. The rig crew was already set up for them—Remus loved it when people took advantage of a slow morning—and he snagged a set of keys off the wall hook with a glance at his pager, chucking them to Layla.
“Bravo on 3rd and Central!” he called to her. “You drive, Knutty and I have the back.”
“On it!”
Go, go, go. If there was one thing Remus loved about this job, it was the total inability to dwell. His keel found even water best when the waves were rolling up around them. Stagnancy was not an option. “D-1, Layla, talk me through!”
“Multiple victims!”
“D-4?”
Her expression flickered for just a second. “Explosion.”
“What’s the Bravo tell you?” Seatbelts, stretcher, respirator. The first ambulance was already out—it would be engines next, then their backup squad. He opened his mouth to speak and found Leo already packing burn ointment into the front compartments. “Nice, Nut. Layla! Bravo!”
“Sorry, uh—potentially life threatening, basic support!”
He knocked on the window between the cab and the rear, and passed a thumbs-up through the gap. “Three for three. Keep it up.”
“Remus!”
“Hi, yeah—”
Remus nearly choked on his own tongue. “Sorry, bad timing,” Sirius rushed out. He pressed close to the ambulance, which was the logical and spatially-aware thing to do in a bustling firehouse, but did absolutely nothing to quell the tsunami crashing through Remus’ insides.
“Hi,” Remus repeated, breathless in the surge. “I’m so sorry. I’m so dumb. Last night was—good, it was really good to—um—multiple burn victims, also sorry for stealing your shirt?”
“We can talk later, it’s okay.” Sirius was looking at him. It was strange. Not…not quite desire, but searching. For what, Remus didn’t know.
The engines roared to life. Sirens fractured his hearing.  Layla would have them up and running in the next fifteen seconds. “I’ll be right back!” Remus shouted over the noise, leaning out between the aluminum doors to be heard. “Probably! And—god, sorry I left, that was a dick move!”
“It’s fine!”
“Not really! I didn’t want to!”
Sirius barked a laugh. “I’m glad!”
A laugh simmered in his own chest, fighting to get out. He started to speak again (though to say what, he wasn’t sure) only to be silenced by a quick, chaste press of lips on his own. He sat hard on the cold bench behind him.
“Screaming people,” Sirius said. A grin dimpled his cheek. “Go get ‘em.”
The ambulance jerked forward; Remus kept his side of the doors open as long as he could, spellbound, just to see him stand there against the reds and golds of their shared home. The slam of aluminum and steel dragged him from his dazed reverie. He pressed back against the wall and blinked the stars out of his eyes.
On the opposite bench, Leo clucked his tongue. “So that’s where your shirt went.”
The laughter bubbled free, and it didn’t stop until Remus felt half-drowned from it.

“When do you think you’ll get out of work?” Y/N asks, leaning against her girlfriend’s unofficial work desk. She wasn’t at her own office today, deciding to spend the day at Station 19.
Natasha glances at the clock, them turn to look at her girlfriend with an apologetic look on her face. “Late.” Y/N sigh, throwing her head back. Laye hours weren’t unusual for her, she works at Grey Sloan Memorial after all, but the Firs Chief’s duties seem to be never ending. “I’m really sorry, love.”
“It’s okay. This is your job and your job is important and you’re amazing.”
With a chuckle, Natasha stands up to kiss Y/N. Her hands are wrapped around her lower back, while Y/N’s are on her shoulders. She pushes her against the table. Unfortunately for Y/N, Natasha pulls away before things go any further, which makes her whine.
Giving her one last kiss, Natasha goes back to the desk full of paper work. “Go home, wat something and take a nap. I’ll be there before you know it.”
“Okay.” Y/N agrees, though she doesn’t hide her pout. “Love you, see you later.”
“I love you,” is the last thing Y/N hears before closing the door to the office.
Sighing, she starts descending the stairs, hoping not to run into any of the other firefighters, as none of them are aware of her and Natasha’s relationship. However, luck isn’t on her side today.
“Y/N!” Travis, her brother, runs up to her with Victoria. “What are you doing here?” He looks over the scrubs she’s wearing. “Did something happen?”
“Nothing happened.” She rolls her eyes, stopping in front of the best friends.
“Then why are you here?”
“To see Natasha.”
Travis scrunches his brows while Victoria raises hers. “You were with Chief Ross?” She questions, not understanding why the younger Montgomery would have any business with the fire department’s chief.
“I was.”
“Why?”
“Because we’re in a relationship.”
The lobby turns eerily quiet. Victoria’s eyes are wide as she takes in the sentence. Travis looks like he has frozen on his spot. Neither of them expected to hear that coming out of her mouth. Y/N stares at them expectantly, waiting for either of them to say anything. She doesn’t really care what anyone thinks about her, but this silence was starting to make her uncomfortable.
“You-“ Travis points at her, as if that’d make him articulate better, “you are dating out boss?”
“Yes.”
He doesn’t understand how the word comes out of her mouth so easily. Yes. Like it’s the simplest thing in the world. “Why in the world didn’t you think to tell me, that you are dating my boss?” His voice turns high pitched.
“You never asked.”
“I never-!” He takes a moment to compose himself, rubbing his face. He glances at Victoria, who is quietly laughing to herself. “This isn’t funny!”
She raises her hands in mock surrender, but there’s still a grin on her lips. “I’m sorry, but I think this is amazing. Go baby Montgomery.” She high fives her, making Travis groan.
As Victoria clearly doesn’t see the issue with this, Travis decides to handle it himself. Which is why he starts jogging towards Chief Ross’ office. “Travis!” Y/N shouts, running after him. “Don’t you dare do anything stupid and dramatic, or I’ll strangle you!”
But, Travis has already slammed the office door open. He stands in front of Chief Ross, who just stares at him, and opens his mouth only for nothing to come out. He clearly didn’t think this through. That is his boss after all.
By now, Y/N has caught up to him. “I’m sorry, Tasha. He is being stupid.”
“You’re dating my sister.” Is all he manages to get out.
“I am.”
“Chief, with all due respect, I think it is an inappropriate relationship.” Travis states, making Y/N hit his arm.
“Y/N isn’t part of the FD, I’m not her superior.”
“Well, she’s my younger sister.”
“Adult younger sister.” Natasha argues back, way calmer than Y/N would be capable of when it comes to her brother. “This is a consenting relationship between two adults, who are equal. So, what is the problem, Montgomery? Is it because we’re both women?”
Y/N snorts at the question, and Travis starts spluttering. “Of course not!” His hands wave around the room. “I am very proud that my sister is comfortable with her sexuality, but..but this-“ he tries to come up with anything, but he can’t.
“But this is my relationship,” Y/N steps in front of him, “and I love her and that’s the end of it.”
He sighs. It’s his sister’s relationship, he can’t do anything, no matter how uncomfortable it is to know his younger sister is dating his boss. “I know. But if you do anything to hurt her-“
Natasha interrupts him instantly, “you should remember that I am still your superior.”
“Yes, Chief.” He mumbles, gives Y/N a hug, and leaves the office.
Giggling, Y/N closes the door and goes to sit down on the desk. “That was funny, and kind of hot.” She whispers with a glint in her eyes.
Natasha shakes her head with a smile. “Now, don’t do anything or I won’t get any work done.”
“Can I at least stay here? Now that they know.”
“Of course.” She sets her hand on Y/N’s knee, the other hand signing all the needed papers.
They spend the rest of Natasha’s work day together, though mostly in silence, but it’s the good kind of silence. Where Natasha can work in peace and Y/N can admire her while she works, one of her favorite things to do.

Stupido | A Station 19 fanfiction
A/N: A quick follow up to this fic. Requested by the travic ceo @travichughes! Be sure to check her blog out.
Warnings: All the Italian is from google translate so don’t come for me! Happy reading!
-
To say Carina is angry is an understatement.
When she first met her wife’s team, she could immediately tell that Travis Montgomery and Victoria Hughes were inseparable.
So, she never expected him to leave her out to dry.
Vic instantly became one of her favorite people. The youngest firefighter is a ball of sunshine, and her personality and humor sometimes reminds Carina of her stupid baby brother, who left her too soon. Seeing Vic so broken, so hurt…nearly shattered the Italian into two.
And, typically, her sadness grows into anger. This circumstance is no exception.
Maya contacted Chief Ross, letting her know that Vic and her would be taking the day off. The chief held a lot of sympathy for Vic, knowing how strongly the firefighter held her emotions. She also complimented Maya on how good of a friend she is, which surprised Maya.
However, Carina decided to go in, as it is a clinic day and she has patients. She held in her anger for Travis until he approached her.
“Hey Carina. Do you know where Vic is? I haven’t seen her since yesterday morning. I tried calling her but she hasn’t answered.”
Carina feels a bubble of anger, and doesn’t respond, but drags Travis into his bunk and shuts the door.
“Do you have any idea how much of a thick headed stronzo you are?! Mio dio, ti preoccupi solo adesso?!”
Travis is incredibly confused. First, he only understands half of what Carina just said to him, second, the last time he saw her this angry was last year when Jack ordered pineapple on pizza.
“What are you…” He begins, but is cut off by the raging doctor. “No, no, no, you do not speak. Only listen. You have been so caught up in this stupid mayor race and your new idiota boyfriend that you have completely left vic behind! How could you?” Carina rants.
“Carina I-.” Once again, Travis is cut off. “It is not my place to tell you what happened, but Victoria was on a tough call yesterday, she was so distraught that Maya and I found her sobbing in her bunk. Victoria Hughes, the most bright, beautiful ball of sunshine looked completely broken. Maya and I took her to our home, and she is still there with Maya.”
Travis sighs. “I know I’ve been shitty, and I’m sorry. I really am. But Carina, she’s everything to me. I can’t lose her.”
“You won’t, Travis. But, you’ve been a bad friend. You need to make it up to her, and promise you won’t leave her behind. I don’t doubt that she’ll forgive you for this, but still. Be her person, like you always have been.” Carina explains. Travis nods, thanking Carina before they both go back to work.
He has some serious apologies to make.
-
Vic snuggles closer to Maya, enjoying her warmth. Maya has always been so comfortable to cuddle with, and gives the best hugs. Despite how upset she was yesterday, Maya has been making her feel so much better.
“God, these reality tv shows are so lame.” Maya complains. “Yeah, but they make me feel better about my own life.” Vic laughs. Seeing how much of a mess these people are makes her feel like she’s doing pretty okay.
On the screen, a woman slaps her now ex-boyfriend, and Maya whoops. “DESERVED!” She yells. Vic giggles, shaking her head.
“Hey…you know I got you? Always, ok? I’ll always be here.” Maya reassures Vic. Vic nods. “Yeah, yeah. I know.”
-
Later on in the day, Vic hears a knock at the door to Maya and Carina’s apartment. “I’ll get it.” She murmurs to the two, and opens the door to see a guilty looking Travis.
“Hey…I know I’ve been really shitty lately, but can we talk?” He requests. Vic hesitantly nods. Maya and Carina quietly move to their room, giving the duo some space.
Travis takes Vic’s hand as they sit down. “I’m so sorry, Vic. I’ve been such an oblivious idiot that I forgot what’s most important to me. And that’s you.”
Vic feels tears pool in her eyes. “And I’m sorry that Theo has been being such a douche to you lately. It’s not fair, the way he is treating you.” Travis continues.
“Carina mentioned you had a rough call yesterday, and I just wanted to say I’m here. If you need to talk, cry, anything. I’m here.” He promises.
“Thank you, Trav. But you still have a lot of making up to do.” She tells him. Travis hugs her. “I know. Don’t you ever forget that you are my number one, ok? You’ll always be my number one.”
The duo continue to hug for a moment, before Vic pulls back. “I don’t know what to do about Theo. He’s been so busy being captain and has his head so far up his ass he might see god himself.”
Travis chuckles at the end of that sentence. “Look, Theo doesn’t deserve you. If he finds that his job is more important than you? Then let him, and leave him. He will eventually realize what he lost.”
“Thanks, Travis. I needed to hear that.” Vic murmurs. “And take it from someone who is man and attracted to them. They fucking suck sometimes.”
Vic laughs loudly at that. “Trust me, I know. If I could choose I would totally be attracted to women.”
They laugh for another moment before Travis sobers. “How can I start making it up to you?”
Vic grins, throwing her feet on Travis’ lap. “Foot rub!”
Travis rolls his eyes. “Fine. But only because I love you.”
“I love you too, dumbass.”

So I got caught up on Station 19 and I have thoughts™
Andy captain of 19 - well she's about the only one that hasn't been captain so far so I guess it's her turn now
Jack definitely has some kind of brain injury. The fall earlier in the season and the headwound in the season finale - he's screwed.
Theo/Vic + whatshername - I'm over it already. It was obvious they were going to make him cheat with her. It's dumb and annoying and Vic deserves better.
Travis - I knew he was going to concede to the other candidate. He was never going to quit firefighting for politics. Didn't see the Eli thing coming though. But just what is going on there? Eli spent basically the entire season flirting with Andy and then suddenly he's dating Travis? Is he bi? Was Travis his bi awakening? (relatable)
Warren - him not being able to save that last guy at the house fire had me in tears. Seriously. And I thought his guilt over it would be a bigger issue... but maybe they'll continue that in the next season.
Maya/Carina - my girls. My loves. I'm so glad they're back together and happy again. I think they should do a vow renewal next season. To really secure that foundation Maya was talking about. But them agreeing to have a baby/start ivf and then the waitress at the ball going into labour and planning to put the baby up for adoption? And her not doing so well after the floor collapse? The baby being a boy when Carina has said she wanted a boy? I have a feeling where this is going and I'm not sure I like it.
Chief Ross - I hope she stays on somehow. She's a badass and I started to like her. Especially when she took the whole sullivan thing and turned it around/ told her version of the story.
Sullivan - over it and him.
Beckett - please tell me he's not coming back.
Killing off Dixon seems like such a cop out. He's been THE villain for several seasons and now he just dies? Meh.
New union guy - is he going to be the new Dixon?

A Little Braver - 72
So, as promised here we are with ch. 72 The first part is still quite angsty but then I swear it gets better and I promise the angst is officially over. I have nothing but fluff planned until ch 75 and then the epilogue. This was the last bit of drama.
Tumblr media
A savage scream left Rowan’s lungs.
He was about to bolt for the building but Fenrys who probably had an inkling what he wanted to do blocked him.
“Rowan, you cannot go inside.”
He trashed in Fen’s arms as he kept screaming Aelin’s name and shaking his head. She could not die like that, could not leave him. Rowan tried to get free once more but Fenrys kept shouting at him to stop.
“Let me go,” he shouted once more he looked up at the inferno with blurry vision from the tears now flowing in full force “She can’t leave me…”
Fenrys thanked his firefighter training that allowed him to keep Rowan still. The last thing he needed was for him to rush inside and get himself killed “Ro, please. You cannot go inside.”
“She can’t leave me,” he kept screaming and fighting his friend until he had no strength left and finally collapsed on his knees, exhausted. Resigned. Heartbroken.
Elide took over and crouched at Rowan’s side while Fenrys stood and ran to Dorian “Chief, I need to go in. I have to do this.”
Dorian nodded and Fenrys ran to the truck to grab a new SCBA then disappeared into the building.
“They will find her.” Elide brushed Rowan’s hair in a tender gesture and the man seemed to give up the fight.
Rowan breathed in hard and stood his mask back on “I need to help,” his voice cold and love and utterly detached.
“I don’t think—”
But Rowan stopped her “Please. I need to keep busy and help so that I don’t go insane.”
He took a patient and kept listening to the radio as was Dorian, directing the rescue. More people kept coming out being escorted by firefighters. It seemed that they had found more people alive and that was a miracle considering the size of the fire. The last explosion had been brutal but the fire was finally showing signs of dying down.
The time had seemed to slow down and Rowan listened eagerly to the radio but the men inside were silent, probably concentrating on the rescue.
“Chief we can hear her PASS alarm.” It had been Fenrys voice to break the silence.
Rowan’s head turned again to the building. The alarm was not a guarantee she was alive but they had found her at least. For a brief moment he allowed himself to hope. For an instant the wrenching pain in his soul abated and he felt like breathing once more.
“Please be alive, fireheart. Please come back to me,” he said a bit too out loud while he medicated the man in front of him.
“Do you know anyone in the building?”
“My girlfriend is a firefighter. They lost her but they got her now but I don’t know yet if she is alive.”
The man nodded “these people deserve a friggin medal after this. They are heroes to willingly go inside such an inferno.”
He kept chatting with the man while he checked on him and that helped distract him.
Until Elide screamed.
His head whipped towards the sound and saw Fenrys carrying Aelin in his arms and Brullo at his side. Elide ran but he stood still. He could not stare at the limp body in his friend’s arms. In those few second he started praying to all of the ancient gods he barely believed in and in Mala. He asked Mala to keep Aelin safe.
Once his victim was patched up the man stood “I hope they find her.” he joined the other victims at the side of the road. Rowan then took a step, and then another towards the gurney where Elide was assessing Aelin.
“Rowan, her breathing is shallow and her GCS 5. Intubate her while I do other checks.”
His body reacted on instinct and training made him forget that it was Aelin he was dealing with. All the emotional detachment that the airforce had instilled in him came back in full force and it was all it was keeping him sane.
“You stay with me okay? You come back to me. You are just sleeping. I am here, fireheart. Do not leave me because there’s no way without you.” He heard himself whispering to her.
“That’s her bagged.” He had completed the action on muscle memory. He would admit later on that he had no recollection of treating her.
“Good. Block her leg with a temporary sling. I think it’s broken.” She pressed her hands on her abdomen “she might have internal bleeding.”
Rowan nodded to the cut on her head.
“Her pupils are reactive, she reacted to pain.”
Elide pulled back and lifted the bars at the side “come on, let’s take her to the hospital.”
Elide told Dorian they were the ones taking Aelin to Med and the man did not object.
Rowan went to get to the driver’s seat but Elide stopped him “I am driving today.”
“It’s better.”
Elide was the paramedic in charge but had allowed Rowan to drive using the reasoning that she knew what a careful driver he was and trusted him. She also knew he was better than her in the harsh winter conditions. But on that day he was not in the right state of mind.
They arrived at the hospital ten minutes later and unloaded Aelin and saw the nightmare that was the hospital. Sorscha spotted them and gasped at seeing Aelin on the stretcher.
“GCS 5, shallow breathing, possible internal injury, head injury and a broken leg.” Elide did the unload. Rowan just stared at his girlfriend being carried away by doctors.
Elide pulled Rowan aside “Stay here. I am going back to help a little more. The worst is passed but there are still people needing help. I can ask Ansel to help.”
“I shouldn’t.”
“Rowan, I want you here, and east too.” she placed her hands on his shoulders “Your head will not be on the job. Stay with her, please.”
Elide ran out and Rowan sat down and stared at the door through which they had taken her. His head hung heavily against the wall and with his hand he brushed the tattoo with their names. His eyes fell on his polo shirt and noticed the blood staining it. Some of it was Aelin’s. He lifted his hands and saw them shaking. With rage he pulled off the gloves and buried his face in his hands. This was not happening. They had just celebrated two years together. The best two years of his miserable life.
They had been two hard years, with a lot of ups and downs and all of the problems that couple usually face. They had even survived his battle with ptsd when he felt everyday that he was not worth being loved by her. Life had tried its best to try and separate them but they had fought back. Because of something he was now positive. They belonged together. Aelin was his soulmate and the pain he was feeling now was the proof. His soul was breaking at the possibility of loosing it’s other half.
From his back pocket he pulled out the copy of her badge and held it in his shaky palm.
“Fight for us one last time, please.”
He looked around and saw an A&E flooded with all the victims from the fire. There were so many and that’s all thanks to the five station. He was aware that they had lost people but given the inferno it was a miracle the death toll hadn’t been higher. The man he treated had been right. They all deserved a medal, a red carpet, the fucking glory. And he knew that none of the firefighters would love being called a hero. They all did it because it was their duty, their job. He had spent enough time with them to know it.  He would gladly go to all the newspapers and talk about the incredible job they did.
His eyes wandered around the A&E and recognised some of the patients he treated. He stood and walked to them to ask for an update, until he remembered they had brought Manon in. Slowly he limped to the nurses station. His knee was getting worse.
Sorscha was free so he went to her “Hey, do you have news on Manon?”
The woman typed something on her computer “She is in treatment 4.”
“How is she?”
“Awake. Her sats were rock bottom but as soon as we started her heavily on oxygen they climb up and she woke up.”
Rowan nodded but before he turned he looked at the woman “Dorian had a really bad day. I think we all did. Look after him.”
He made his way to treatment 4 and saw Manon in bed with an oxygen mask on her face. He knocked on the doorframe and as she spotted him the woman sat up “Rowan…” she was about to remove her mask to speak but he stopped her “Your sats were in the toilet, keep it on.” He sat on the chair at her side “The fire is finally dying down. The guys have been making good progress but the beast took out two floors…” he paused “Aelin…” he pushed back the tears threatening to spill “Aelin is in surgery.”
“What happened?”
He told her everything and for some reason it made him feel better.
He and Manon kept chatting until an hour later east team poured in to see the woman. Rowan stepped outside and saw Aedion talking with Sorscha. He walked to the man with a visible limp.
“Rowan…”
“Any news…”
Aedion shook his head and forced him to sit down “Still in surgery.”
Rowan leaned back heavily on the chair “she has to pull through…”
“I haven’t told Lys yet. I can’t until I know Aelin is fine.”
“You might become a father a bit too early,” Rowan had found the strength to make a joke. He was just trying to ignore the time passing.
Some of the victims in the A&E recognised them as they exited Manon’s room and those who could, started walking toward them to thank them.
East team gathered around Rowan “some regional teams are finishing up and gave us some relief. Dorian will be here soon,” Brullo had sat at his side “any updates?”
Rowan just shook his head in silence and his gaze returned to the big doors leading to the restricted area.
He heard the team chatting away around him but Rowan felt empty and his mind was focused only on Aelin. The single thought in his head in those moments. And in that instant he took his decision. He was not going to waste any more time. As soon as Aelin was better he was going to ask her to marry him. There was no point in waiting and he wanted that. He had wanted to marry her for a very long time, but his fears held him back, but now that his worst fear threatened them once more it was all he needed.
He was deep in his thoughts when a doctor walked towards the group two hours later.
Aedion stood, Rowan did the same but as he put weight in his leg, sharp pain spread through the limb and he had to lean on the chair.
“You okay?” Aedion grabbed him and helped him stand.
“How’s Aelin?” He ignored the pain in his leg.
The doctor moved aside for some privacy “she is out of surgery. She had some internal bleeding but we stopped it. Her lower body suffered multiple fractures, from the collapse I assume. Luckily they were all closed, and she just has a cast on both legs and recovery should be fine,” the doctor paused “however, the TBI caused a small bleeding in her brain. We caught it in time and the surgeon was able to stop it before it got worse. Such injuries might cause issues but we will not know until she wakes up.”
“Her lungs…” asked Rowan “in an accident a while ago she had breathed in a lot of smoke and had breathing problems for a while.”
“Her mask was cracked when they found her,” added Aedion with the same worry.
“Her sats were dangerously low so she is intubated and we are oxygenating the lungs to avoid ARDS to develop. Given her situation we have her in the ICU for now.”
“She will wake up, won’t she?” The fear in Rowan was deep.
The doctor nodded “the neurosurgeon is confident about it. We are just erring on the side of caution. She is heavily sedated to allow her body to heal without stress.”
Rowan nodded.
“Do you want to see her?”
Both men nodded with enthusiasm but as Rowan moved another step he winced.
“You should have that leg looked at.”
“My stick is in the ambulance.”
Aedion allowed him to sit down once more and went to grab Elide to get Rowan’s stick.
He came back running a few minutes later and Rowan accepted his stick happily.
The doctor started walking to the lifts and then she turned to Aedion “we are going to the eight floor,” and grinned.
Aedion disappeared and Rowan happily trotted behind the doctor “You knew about the lift.”
“We have firefighters around a lot.”
The closer they got to the room the more panic rose in Rowan. The doctor’s word kept ringing in his ears. As long as she was alive they would face anything together.
Once on the floor they saw Aedion waiting for them near the nurses’ station. His face covered in dirt but his piercing blue eyes staring at him with confidence.
“She’s down here.”
The doctor walked them to the room and Rowan stepped aside “you first.”
Aedion hesitated.
“You are family.”
“You are her family too, Rowan.”
He knew but he needed time. He was beyond terrified.
At Rowan’s pained expression Aedion nodded and went into the room and Rowan sat on a chair and closed his eyes.
The darkness was broken by images of their good times together, her bright smile and her happiness. He heard himself sob. The possibility that Aelin might be taken from him was destroying him. He pulled out her badge once more and held it in his hands I don’t want to see your badge on that wall. A silent prayer to Mala, her favourite ancient goddess.
A tap on his shoulder ripped him from his dark thoughts and when he opened his eyes he noticed Aedion.
“Go, I will update her team. She needs you now.”
Rowan grabbed the stick and pulled himself up but almost stumbled when atrocious pain spread through his leg but Aedion caught him.
Rowan groaned. The pain had been bad all day, far too busy saving lives to even care. But as the hours passed the pain had intensified and he just ignored it.
“You should have that leg looked at.”
“No,” he added shaking his head “after I see Aelin.”
“I will be downstairs. Dorian might ask for a shift change over earlier on given what we faced. I will be back.”
Rowan nodded and stared at the cousin disappear down the stairs.
He tried to stand again and used the wall for extra support.
Finally he mustered all of his courage and entered the room.
The light was not as bright and the silence was only broken by the constant beeping of the machines. His eyes finally landed on her. His fireheart looked so fragile and broken in that hospital bed with tubes attached to her and the machines crowded around her.
Someone must have cleaned her face, now free of all soot. Her head was enveloped in a thick bandage where he knew she had surgery. The hands were heavily bandaged too. He had noticed the cuts and his gut clenched at the image of her trying to claw her way out of the debris. The lower part of her body was hiding under the blankets but from the bulky form he knew both legs were in casts.
With a trembling hand he brushed her forehead and then leaned over for a kiss “I am here, fireheart.” Rowan finally sat down and oh so gently he grabbed her bandaged hand and brought it to his mouth for a kiss “I was so scared, I am still…” he added while his head bent forward on her shoulder “I thought you left me. If you had died…”  he sobbed, lifted his head and cleared his tears with the back of his hand “if you had died I would have been a lost man.” Another kiss “I will marry you. Just get better and I will ask you to be my wife. I am done waiting.” He brushed her head once more “I love you,” tears came back with force “I love you so damn much.”
After that he felt spent so he just leaned back on the chair never releasing her hand.
Eventually he fell asleep.
It was three hours later when a soft tap on his shoulder woke him up. He opened his eyes and realised he had fallen asleep with his head near Aelin’s hand.
Rowan turned his head and spotted Aedion.
“Sorry.”
“Come, Dorian got our second teams to relieve us. We are going home.”
“No…” he said almost in a panic. He was not leaving her.
“Rowan, we are going home, you take a shower, get changed and then I will take you back. I need to tell Lys and you need to rest a bit.”
Eventually he nodded and let the man help him. He realised he must looked like a wreck when Aedion offered to ride the lift with him.
*
Four days later Rowan went back to the hospital after his shift and Aelin’s doctor met him with a grin on his face “come.”
He dragged him into the room and he gasped at the scene. Aelin was awake. The doctor peeled away and he just stood on the door.
He noticed her head slowly turn to him and Aelin gave the smile he adored. The one that could dispel all the clouds and the darkness.
Almost in a daze he walked to her, his hand extended and the next instant he was kissing her like a desperate man, tears falling freely down his face.
He pulled back and green eyes met blue “hi you…”
A weak smile broke on her face. She still looked pale and the heavy bandage in her head did nothing to dispel that image.
She was not intubated anymore and only had nasal cannulas to help breath a bit better. That was a great success. And she was awake. He had to find a moment to speak with the doctor.
So many thoughts started flooding in his mind at the excitement of having her awake that he had no idea what to do or say next, so he just sat down on the chair that had become his best friend.
“Don’t…” he whispered, while grabbing her hand “don’t ever tell me goodbye again over the radio.”
Aelin’s head went deeper on the pillow “I thought I was a goner. I was pinned and the fire all around me…” she looked away for a second and Rowan worried, his mind going back to what she went through after the airport accident.
“Then I heard Fen and Brullo… and I knew I would be fine, that I’d see you again.”
Rowan leaned forward and kissed her forehead “Now it’s my turn to be your nurse.”
Aelin chuckled and coughed as well and Rowan’s fussiness kicked in “I need to go and speak with the doctor, will you be okay for five minutes?”
Aelin nodded “I love you.”
Rowan left the room and found Aelin’s doctor.
“She is awake, that is a good sign, right?”
The man nodded “she went for an MRI this morning and there is no sign of other bleeding. The neurosurgeon examined her and is happy with her response. We will keep her in the hospital a bit longer but we are ready to move her out of the ICU.”
Rowan breathed deeply, that was the best news.
Quickly he went back to the room and saw her with her eyes closed but as he stepped in Aelin looked at him “so?”
Rowan sat on the edge of the bed and shook his head “Doc said you can’t function without me.”Aelin lifted her hand and caressed his cheek “I can’t…” she whispered “I don’t want to.”
He grabbed the hand in his and kissed it “get better… then we can talk about it.”
Aelin smiled back “how’s the others?”
“Dorian appointed Manon as acting captain, Marcus and Borte are off and pretty banged up” he then grinned “you all got a commendation from the mayor. He visited the five houses and you might expect a visit here in the hospital too.” Rowan’s grin was wider “He promised to try and find budget to open at least two more houses, help the police and also fund hospitals,” he passed her a newspaper from the day after the accident “he claimed that events like these albeit rare, showed just how understaffed the emergency services are and that a tragedy was avoided only because of the amazing people who worked hard for hours on end.”
Aelin read the newspaper “this guy is good…” her voice still hoarse.
“He is ex PD and worked a lot with firefighters and hospitals. He knows what he is talking about, which is what we needed.”
“And how’s my sexy paramedic?” Aelin’s hand brushed his polo shirt.
“Your two favourite Rowan miss you very much at home,” a huge grin “we are almost packed and the guys will help me next time we are off to move everything. I have Lorcan and the boys too. We hired a van.”
“Our house…”
Rowan kissed her “let me deal with it. You work on getting better. Also,” he took out his phone and showed her an email “the sale of your place went through to the family you liked.”
The smile she gave him was a bright one “they are very happy.”
Rowan then sat near her head and pulled her closer gently and started showing some pictures of their old house and Aelin laughed when she saw the ones with bird Rowan on top of boxes “he was directing the operations.”
Aelin’s laughter was the best sound in the universe.
 *
Later on that afternoon her room had been a constant stream of visitors. West, north, south and central had all gone to see her, with great desperation from the nurses who saw their ward invaded by a constant stream of firefighters. But since she was not in the ICU anymore she was finally allowed visitors on top of Rowan and Aedion.
Her team had joined soon after and Brullo was the first one who enveloped her in a crushing hug telling her not to give him another scare like that. Dorian had arrived soon after and the man as well hugged her fiercely and then gave her an update on the fire. They had discovered that there had been a massive electrical problem just above the panels of the ceiling. The fire had spread very quickly finding very easily flammable materials.
The mayor had kept his promise and visited her as well. No one told her in advance and Aelin had no way of preparing herself. The man was such a difference from the previous one. He had sat with her alone, his entourage all waiting outside and he had listened to her story and what she had done on that day. It was easy to chat with him and without knowing it she had spilled her idea of the project she had been pondering for a while. She wanted to create an outreach program for girls, especially in high school age, to try and show them that gender was not a barrier, that they could achieve anything if they really wanted. She had even thought of a name Rattle the stars. The mayor had loved the idea and promised to have his PR team to get in touch with her and also he’d try and allocate a small budget at the next review in a month.
She had talked about her project with Rowan too and he promised his support. He had also confessed that the first two women had finally graduated from fighter pilot school but were encountering a lot of resistance in the ranks. Aelin had been furious.
She finally had a few minutes for herself after the stream of visitors when a figure appeared on the threshold.
“Lys…” Aelin pushed the button of the bed to pull her up. Her friend waddled to her and they exchanged a very awkward hug with Lys bump in the way.
“Hi fatso.”
Lysandra sat on the bed and patted her bump “I am officially a whale.”
“You look amazing.”
“You look better too,” added her friend in a sad tone.
“I look like a mummy with all these bandages.”
Lysandra sobbed “do not ever do that to us… never again.”
“I was not a fan either.”
“Elide was ready to kill you when she heard your radio message and Rowan…” her friend paused. Fenrys had told her he had to restrain his friend who was ready to jump into the building “he hasn’t left your side. Elide told me he’d ran here after shift and once home apparently he had been packing for the move.”
“I know.” Aelin wanted to change subject. She knew all about Rowan and how desperate he had been and it hurt like hell what she had put him through. Aelin had even joked to him that now they were even after his plane crash. His only answer had been an angry glare.
“So, how’s the academy. Terrified any students?”
“I am a fantastic instructor…” a pause “and I love it. Yes, I miss you all like crazy but I realised that I enjoy teaching just as much.”
“And how’s peanut?”
Lysandra patted her bum “well, it’s now more like a watermelon, and if it wasn’t that I saw the scan myself I’d say that your cousin spawned twins.”
Aelin patted the belly “how far along now?”
“I just celebrated week 26. Still a lifetime away.”
“I am so looking forward to be auntie Aelin and spoil that boy rotten.”
Lysandra grinned “you do that and then I will reciprocate once you and Rowan finally decide to reproduce.”
Aelin paused and looked at her friend in her eyes “I am ready. I want to marry him and I have a feeling he is ready too.”
“Aelin,” Lys’ hand went on her leg “Rowan has been ready for a very long time.”
She knew. She had been the only one still unsure. No matter how much she loved him there was still a block. But now that was gone. He was her soulmate. Her rock. Her friend. The man who had taken her hand and walked the dark path with her back to light. Back to a happy future together.
The two women talked all afternoon until Lysandra admitted that she was looking forward to be stranded on her sofa.
Rowan appeared an hour later. A pair of jeans and a green polo shirt. His hair tied in a man bun and sunglasses propped on his head. Gods, even after two years together he would still make her heart race like the beginning. She wished she was not stuck in an hospital bed. He was carrying a duffel bag and imagined it was her change of clothes and some more entertainment. She had given him a list of books she wanted and Rowan had promised he’d have a trip to the bookstore.
“You are not allowed to look this hot. Nurses might want to steal you away from me.”
Rowan gave her a throaty laugh and kissed her “I bring presents and a visitor.”
Aelin looked at him puzzled while he opened the duffel bag and burst out laughing when she spotted bird Rowan “he missed you.”
Aelin took the toy and hugged it “miss you too, buddy.”
“How are you feeling?”
Aelin groaned “the food sucks and the nurses refuse to sneak in a burger from the cafeteria.”
Rowan laughed “give me half an hour.” A quick kiss and he disappeared away.
“Do you think he went to get us good food?” She asked the toy while inhaling Rowan’s scent of pine and snow. Gods she missed him.
As promised her boyfriend appeared half an hour later carrying a paper bag she recognised straight away. It was from Emrys.
Rowan pushed the sliding tray in front of her and helped her sit up properly and started to unpack the bag “Emrys threw in a slice of chocolate cake.”
Aelin grabbed her burger and tucked in with ravenous hunger. Rowan laughed. She must have been starving. Hospital food was definitely not what she was used to.
“You are a lifesaver.”
Rowan sat on his chair while tackling his vegetarian burger “The guys and I finally moved everything to the new house.”
Aelin stopped eating “we were meant to do that together.”
At the sadness in her voice he took her hand “we will unpack together. I just unboxed the kitchen stuff and my own things. We will do the library and the living room when you are back, we are decorating together.”
“Of course you unpacked the kitchen stuff.”
Rowan chuckled “I have an amazing kitchen now and I can finally organise it like I want.”
“Freak.”
“Hey, I am your freak.”
Aelin’s hand ran through his hair in a gentle motion “you definitely are my wonderful freak.”
She leaned forward and kissed his nose. She felt happy like never in her life. They had a house now. Another step in their relationship. Another step in the journey they embarked two years before on the bench of their favourite park.

Lt. Stella Kidd - Stellaride
Tumblr media
Fandom: One Chicago
Pairing: Kelly Severide & Stella Kidd
A/N: Reposted
•••
“If you’re going to keep staring at the screen you’ll go blind.” Kelly said as he came out of the bedroom half asleep, just to find Stella on the couch with her laptop in front of her and a cup of coffee in her hand.
“I’m so anxious I couldn’t sleep all night.” She said throwing herself on her back and Kelly refilled her cup. “I know…I’ve heared you pacing around.” Stella passed the physical part of the Lieutenant’s exam the week before and now she was waiting on the results from the written part to be posted.
“I don’t know why you are so worried…the physical part was the difficult one and if even I passed the written exam you shouldn’t be concerned at all.” Kelly tried to make light of the situation but Stella was still refreshing her inbox like a mad woman. "It’s not the same…you’re basically Firefighting Royalty, you had like zero chances of failing.“ She said while her attention was still directed to the screen. Running her hands over her face, Stella sighed in defeat and Kelly patted her back gently. She not only looked tired but she could barely keep her eyes open. As she was about to close her laptop and go to bed a notification signaled her she had received an email. Instead of rushing to open it, she froze and just stared at the unopened message that read ‘CFD Lieutenant Exam Results’. Kelly wasted no time and grabbed the laptop from Stella’s lap and opened the email, resulting in Stella quickly panicking. "You know what I don’t want to know…so don’t tell me.” She said as she jumped on her feet getting away from Kelly.
“Well…get ready to receive your Lieutenant bugles next shift.” He announced smiling and Stella’s eyes went wide.
“My what?” She squeled almost ripping the laptop from Kelly’s hands, having to see the results for herself in order to believe them.
She went from nervous, to excited, to shocked so all she could do was stare in amazement at her results. Meanwhile, Kelly took it upon himself to get all excited picking her up and spinning her around, placing kisses all over Stella’s face. “You did it!”
//
Later that day they went to Molly’s and Stella insisted on Kelly not telling anyone but the excitement took the best of him and he spilled the beans to Hermann. Entering the bar, the two were met by collective cheers of “Surprise!” and “Congratulations!” which took Stella by complete surprise. She couldn’t stop smiling even after her cheeks started hurting. “Everybody, I want to make a toast” Kelly said raising his glass and everybody else followed him, “in honor of Lieutenant Stella Kidd. Not one person in this room had a single doubt about the outcome of your exam. I am so proud of you, for never giving up on your ambitions but mostly for being the badass firefighter that you are. You are going to make an outstanding Lieutenant and I love you but Squad is still off limits…just saying.” Everybody erupted in laughter at the latter remark and Stella pulled Kelly into a kiss being in complete awe of him.
“I know I am leaving Engine in very capable hands so you’re making my decision way easier.” Hermann said leaning over the bar. As his retirement age was approaching and his kids were soon going to college he’d requested a transfer to OFI, where he wasn’t going head first into the fires anymore and the paycheck was better. Despite having a hard time coming to terms with his decision after so many years of firefighting, knowing that Stella will take over made it easier for him to make peace with it. “Thanks Hermann, I won’t let you down I promise.”
/
Two days later, Stella walked into the firehouse for the first time since receiving her results and made her way into Chief’s Boden office as soon as she arrived.
“We are all very proud of you!” He said, finally handing her, the very well deserved bugles and she immediately attached them to her shirt. A call coming in interrupted their discussion and Stella quickly rushed to put her gear on. “You ready Kidd?” Casey asked as he was walking towards his truck. “Born ready, Captain!” She answered confidently as Kelly gave her a quick wink before leaving.
Once on scene, they were met with yet another housefire, a no brainer that shouldn’t give anyone a too big of a headache. Going in, Squad searched the basement for victims, Truck took the first floor and Engine the second, pulling out an elderly woman that fortunately only inhaled some smoke. “Second floor is clear!” Ritter announced to Stella as he checked the last room. “Let’s get out then.” Stella answered taking one last look in the bathroom on the hallway and immediatly heard a loud crack. Turning around she saw Ritter’s foot going straight through the stairs, as they snapped under his weight. “Are you ok? Can you move?” She rushed trying to pull him out but he wouldn’t budge. “Need some help on the second floor! Ritter’s foot is stuck through the stairs.” Stella radioed and in no time Kelly and Cruz appeared, cutting the stairs and making more room to pull Ritter out. As they finally got out of the house, Stella took off her oxygen mask frustrated, walking straight to the ambo. ”Is he going to be fine?” She asked as worry could be clearly heard in her voice. “It shouldn’t be too bad.” was all that Brett said as she loaded Ritter into the ambo and he quickly mouthed ‘I’m fine’, knowing how much she would worry.
Back at the firehouse, Stella had a permanent frown plastered on her face. After ambo returned, Brett informed her that Ritter’s ankle was sprained and not broken as Stella thought and he’d most likely be back to work in four weeks max. “I hope you’re not beating yourself over what just happened…” Kelly said as Stella took a seat at the Squad table next to him. It was lunch time so the other guys were inside busy eating, giving them the chance to talk. “Of course i am beating myself up, I should’ve been the first down the stairs.” She said putting her face into her hands. It was her first call as a Lieutenant so Kelly knew how much pressure she was under, therefore he took her hands into his making her look at him. “It could’ve had happened to anyone…You couldn’t have possibly known the stairs were going to crack.” Even though Kelly was making sense and Stella understood his point, it was in her nature to beat herself up also knowing she now was responsible for everyone’s safety on Engine. “You’re going to have to make a lot of tougher calls, so you can’t keep beating yourself up when things that you have no control over happen. It’s always harder at the beginning but you wouldn’t be here if you weren’t capable of handling it…you got this Stella Kidd.” And with that a smile quickly appeared on her face “How did I get so lucky?” Shrugging playfully, Kelly brought her hand to his lips, planting a soft kiss on it.

Yesterday I decided that in my Firefighter AU, Stan gets a bachelor’s degree in fire science after he discovers he needs one to be promoted to the Assistant Fire Chief.  So here’s the moment his hard work pays off.
———————————————————————————————————–
Stan knocked on the door of Angie’s house.
“Comin’!” she called from inside.  Footsteps sounded, as well as a small clatter, which was typical for Angie.  Whenever Stan dropped by, she raced for the door and in her hurry would usually knock something down.  He had a feeling that she rushed because she was worried that whoever was knocking had been doing so for a while, but because she wasn’t wearing her hearing aid, she had only just noticed.  Of course, he couldn’t confirm his theory.  Even if he was right, Angie would deny it.
She’s too damn self-conscious about her hearing loss.  The door opened, revealing Angie.  Sure enough, in the hallway behind her, a picture had been knocked off the wall and onto the floor.
“Pines!” Angie said in delight.  She quickly moved to turn on her hearing aid.  “What brings ya by?”
“I got something in the mail I needed to show you,” Stan said.  He held up the large envelope that had arrived that morning.  Angie’s eyes widened.  She stood to the side.
“Please, come in!” she said.  Stan stepped inside.  “Ya know the way to the livin’ room by now.”
“Sure do.”  Stan headed down the hall, stopping briefly to pick up the picture Angie had knocked down.  It was of a large bonfire.  “Where’d you find this picture?”
“Took it m’self.  Photography’s a bit of a hobby fer me.”
“It looks really good,” Stan said.  He hung the picture on the wall.  Angie blushed slightly.
“Thank you.  Fer both the compliment and puttin’ it back up fer me,” she said in a soft voice. Stan began to walk again, heading for Angie’s living room.
“No problem.  But with how uncoordinated you are, sometimes I wonder how you ever got hired to fight fires,” Stan said idly.  Angie laughed and punched him playfully on the arm.
“The reason I’m so uncoordinated when I’m off the clock is ‘cause I work so hard at bein’ graceful at work.  All that clumsiness builds up and spills out once I can finally trip over somethin’.”  Stan snickered.  “Let’s sit on the couch.”
“Don’t have to tell me twice.”  Stan sat on the worn but comfortable living room couch. Angie sat next to him.  She placed her hands in her lap.
“So, what’s this big thing ya have to show me?” she asked.  Stan grinned. He opened the envelope and removed the item inside.  Angie gasped. “Yer degree!”
“Yep!”  Stan’s grin broadened as he looked down at his diploma.  “I’ve finally got that college education everybody talks about.”
“Oh, this is so wonderful!”  Angie gave Stan a chaste kiss on the cheek.  He could feel himself turn red.  He hurriedly cleared his throat.
“Now I’ve got a bachelor’s in fire science, think you can give me that promotion to Assistant Fire Chief?” he asked.  “Getting it in a correspondence course won’t hurt my odds, will it?”  Angie laughed.
“Even if there were a college within’ commutin’ distance, you gettin’ it via correspondence wouldn’t influence anything.  A degree’s a degree.”  She smiled.  “I’ll see ‘bout gettin’ that promotion goin’ fer ya.”
“Great.”  Stan looked at his diploma again.  “I’ve gotta go stop by Ford’s place.”
“Why?” Angie asked.  Stan looked at her.  “I thought the two of ya still hated each other’s guts,” she said, confused.
“Yeah, we do.  That’s why I’m gonna rub it in Ford’s face that I got a degree without his help.”
“Stanley.”  Angie placed a hand on Stan’s knee.  “This is yer accomplishment.  One that ya wanted to do on yer own, fer yourself.  Don’t make it be about someone else.  That’ll cheapen the hard work ya put into it.”
             “I…”
“Ya didn’t do it to show Stanford ya could. Ya did it to better yourself, to get that promotion ya deserve.  Did ya prove wrong everyone who said ya couldn’t?  Sure.  But this moment ain’t ‘bout ‘em.  It’s ‘bout you.”  She smiled. “If the opportunity comes to show off to Stanford, take it.  But don’t seek it out.”  Stan sighed.
“Dammit,” he muttered.  “You’re right.  Like usual.” Angie chuckled softly.  “I guess sometimes I just- people always underestimated me, y’know?  I just wanna prove them wrong.”
“Oh, I understand the feelin’,” Angie said.  “Every time I went somewhere new fer firefightin’, I had to prove that this tiny, partially deaf farmgirl was just as capable as everyone else.”  She rested her head on Stan’s shoulder.  “But from what I can tell, you’ve proved yourself to everyone who matters.  Don’t waste yer energy on anyone else.  It won’t make ya feel better.  It’ll only make ya feel worse.”
“I know, I know,” Stan said, rolling his eyes. He grinned at Angie.  “So, Chief, about that free meal you promised me once I got my degree…”  Angie laughed.
“I should’ve figured you’d cash that in. Let me grab my purse.  We’ll go get somethin’ at Greasy’s.”  Angie patted Stan’s knee and got up.  After she left the room, Stan looked down at his diploma again. He ran his fingers along his name printed on the paper.
This is my accomplishment.  Not anyone else’s.  Mine.

GIRL ON FIRE
Part 1
Tumblr media
Fandom: Chicago Fire
Pairings: NONE
Words: 600
Description: Sarah’s first day at firehouse 51.
Prologue:
She walked towards the building, bag slung over her shoulder. Nervous energy filled the air, surrounding her like a dark cloud. A tall black man greeted her at the building’s entrance. She stuck out a hand for him to shake.
"You must be Sarah Sumner, I'm Chief Boden, let me show you around." He firmly shook her hand and motioned for her to follow, she nodded in response.
"Pleasure to meet you Chief." She said with all the confidence she could muster.
"Right there is squad table, break room, kitchen, right down there is bathrooms and beds, there is where we keep out gear. Follow me, we’ll talk more in my office." He pointed in each of their directions as he spoke, only walking briefly around the expanse of the room before leading her down the hall.
She stared into the glass walls, filled with un shown fear. Sarah smiled politely at the Chief's secretary before following the man into the large room. He closed the door behind her and sat in his chair, signalling for her to sit in the one across from him.
"Now, I talked to your old Chief over at 40 and I just want to let you know, violence, under any circumstance is not welcome in this firehouse and will result it you either being transferred or fired, is that understood?" He said in a booming voice, loud and commanding.
She nodded nervously in response before speaking, trying to hide her slight shaking. It felt as thought all the air had left the room at the mention of her old firehouse.
"Yes Chief, absolutely. What happened will never happen again, it was completely my fault and I take full responsibility for my actions. I'm just very happy to get back to work." She said, swallowing thickly.
"That being said, I also wanted to say that harassment is also not tolerated in this house and I will do my best to see that you are treated with the respect you deserve." Her eyes widened slightly, so he did know about that.
She wondered what story her old Chief had fed him, probably one about a girl who just couldn't stomach working with the big boys.
"Thank you Chief I appreciate that." She said genuinely.
"Good, now let me introduce you to the rest to the team." He gave her a tight lipped smile before standing again and leading her into the break room.
"Everyone, this is Sarah Sumner, she will be joining us at 51, please make her feel welcome."
She was greeted by several new faces all staring at her with varying levels of enthusiasm, a tall, kind looking man approached her first. With a smile he stepped forward and grabbed her hand, shaking it gently.
"Hey, nice to meet you, I'm Brian, this is Cruz, that lovely lady is Dawson and those are-." He was interrupted by another man.
"Mills and Brett, it's a pleasure to meet you, Sumner." She waved at the pair in greeting.
"You too." She said.
"I'm lieutenant Casey, you'll be working under me." A strong blond man said, reaching her hand out to give a firm handshake in greeting.
"Yes sir."
"You can Call me Mouch." She looked confused but nodded none the less.
"And I'm Herman."
"Nice to meet you all." She responded with a timid smile.
"Why don't you tell us about yourself Sumner?" Mills asked with a smile.
"Oh well, I um... I'm from Chicago, I'm 25, I used to work at the 40th, um-." She could tell at the mention of her old house that they knew who she was.
The girl from 40 that didn't work out, the one that ruined female firefighters for them. She was cut off by a loud ringing and a voice from speaker over head.
"Truck 51, ambulance 61, squad 3, fire at 1465 James street."
"That's us, c'mon Sumner." She quickly got into her gear and hopped into the truck.
The ride was short and bumby, she thought it was better to keep her mouth shut that to potentially stir the pot.
That’s how she spent most of the day, sitting pretty, doing her job and keeping her mouth shut.
Her shift was was a manageable 24 hours, at least it was until a call ran long meaning she had to spend an additional six hours working.
She was beyond exhausted but she knew her day wasn’t over yet.

Dave Palmer: Far from Finished Serving a City He Calls Home
Tumblr media
He’s placed puzzle pieces. He’s policed the streets. He’s Ho-Ho-Hooed! And he’s battled the beast. Public service has been a way of life for Dave Palmer, a two-term Ward 6 Wheeling councilman who is running for a third – and he says final – time to represent residents in the Elm Grove area. Law enforcement, firefighting, school bus driving, even a few years with non-profit organizations, this former first responder has compiled an impressive resume. But Palmer likes peace, too, and that’s why he and his bride, Tammy, enjoy traveling both to East Coast beaches and quiet, rural and regional campgrounds, too.  But is he really ready for a calm existence? For crickets after chaos? For the soundless end of a sizzle? What if another elected office doesn’t come along? Can Palmer not be involved?    Palmer and his wife, Tammy, enjoy travel whether it's to a beach or a campground. Why have you decided to serve the City of Wheeling for just four more years if you are re-elected in 2024? If I’m fortunate enough for the voters to re-elect me in May of 2024, that would give me three, four-year terms on City Council. I’m a firm believer that 12 years is enough time in any elected office. There will always be some project hanging in limbo that you want see through but trust the next person to see it finish.  Fresh faces and more importantly fresh ideas are always needed. After working as a public servant for more than 40 years, what are your retirement plans? Retirement? Who can really predict what the future holds for any of us. That being said, Tammy and I love to travel, we have family in Virginia Beach and we enjoy the Sarasota, Fla., area, too.  The added bonus of our travel trailer, “Gracie Grey.” There are so many lovely campgrounds and so much to explore within a three-hour jaunt from Wheeling. We have also placed our hearts and souls into our home, so we enjoy just hanging out. What we learned from the Covid shutdown was that really just enjoy each other’s company.  Lastly, I would not rule out another political office if the circumstances were right, just not on Wheeling City Council. What was the scariest fire in your career as a Wheeling firefighter? Honestly, all fires are scary and can turn bad at any moment. The beast deserves respect and we would train with that in mind. When you are fighting a fire you are constantly reacting to the situation and there’s no time to be scared. It’s after you return safely and have time to sit down and think about it when you get that, “Oh shit!” moment. Mine was and still is the Easter Sunday Imperial Display fire. There was a group of us trapped in a courtyard between two of the buildings. When the south building flashed over, I could still see (former chief) Larry Helms scaling an eight-foot-high, barbed-wire fence in seconds and going down to where Heritage Trail is today. Larry then grabbed bolt cutters and got us all out. WFD was very fortunate that day not to lose any firefighters. I credit our command staff that day for us all returning safely. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg visited Wheeling just last week and Palmer had the chance to meet the official. What goals of yours have you yet to accomplish as a member of Wheeling Council? My two biggest what I call “failures” in Ward 6: - The former TCI building is still standing in deplorable condition. The Elm Grove businesses and their association deserve better. Hopefully, in the near future, progress will be made to either rehabilitate or demolish that eyesore. Until that happens, I personally perceive it a failure on my part.  - What I consider the second failure is a, “Welcome to Elm Grove” sign not being placed at the bottom of Exit 5 near Shilling Bridge. I could blame this one on money and state right away issues, but I just need to work harder on this one.  As for goals, I want to see the new fire headquarters completed and the other stations repaired as promised. AND, of course, the construction of the WVU regional cancer center, which, in my humble opinion, will change the landscape of Center Wheeling for years to come. Do you wish to be remembered as the “Santa Claus” you portrayed throughout Ward 6 in December 2020? I don’t know if a Santa Claus memory is appropriate because there is truly only one great Saint Nick!  What I’d like to be remembered for from that evening in December 2020 is that joy was spread over a very dark period we were all going through.  I need to preface this story by saying this was an idea that my wife Tammy had. She was able to obtain the outfit for the evening and then we spent countless hours determining a route then driving it numerous times to get the timing down. We then needed a truck and not only did Charlie and Cathy Savage come through with a 1959 white over red GMC, but Charlie also built a rack that I could stand in!  The night of the event was truly magical while Charlie, Cathy and Tammy rode me around, and I know that at some point we all shed a tear of joy. The looks on the children and adults faces make what the four of us all recall as one of the greatest nights of our lives. Read the full article

N.S. opposition leaders call for plan to address rural emergency department closures
Opposition leaders in Nova Scotia are calling on Premier Tim Houston’s PC government to come up with a better plan to address ongoing closures of emergency departments in hospitals, and particularly rural hospitals, across the province.
The death of a patient at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital in Middleton, Nova Scotia last week is sparking renewed calls improving emergency health-care policies.
This comes after an admitted patient went into cardiac arrest last week at the Soldiers Memorial Hospital late in the evening when the emergency department was closed and there was no doctor on site.
Health staff called 911 and volunteer firefighters responded along with EHS paramedics, who performed chest compressions. The patient did not survive.
Middleton deputy fire chief Scott Veinot, said in a letter to the town council that the doctor on-call the evening when the patient died was more than 30 minutes away in Kentville.
Veinot said they received the 911 dispatch call late Thursday night and firefighters arrived at the hospital around 11:00 pm and were informed there was no doctor on duty.
“I find this very concerning to know that not only is our emergency department failing our community, now our inpatients are at risk with no doctor coverage on the medical floor,” wrote Veinot.
“Is this a new normal for Soldiers Memorial Hospital?”
The deputy fire chief closed his letter by pleading with his local government to work with the province to come up with a better health-care plan.
“We want to know what happened and what the health authority’s plan is to address this issue going forward,” said Veinot in the letter.
Nova Scotia Health said the patient's death was reviewed internally all procedures were followed, and no further review was necessary.
Opposition leaders say the community deserves better.
“The point that I think the community has been making for months now is they don’t have the same access to health care as people in other parts of the province and that’s fundamentally unfair and something the government needs to fix,” said Nova Scotia NDP leader Claudia Chender.
Zach Churchill, leader of the Nova Scotia Liberal party, said the situation is a tragedy and more needs to be done to staff emergency departments in rural communities.
“The plan can’t be when you have someone in the hospital to call the volunteer fire department to come in and give them health care services,” said Churchill. “That’s not a plan. We need to have doctors in rural Nova Scotia and we need to have our emergency rooms open.”
Dr. Colin Audain, an anesthesiologist and the new president of Doctors Nova Scotia, said each hospital has its own protocols in place as to when a call to 911 needs to happen, and said it’s not unusual for the ER to call 911.
“It doesn’t happen everyday,” Audain said. “But I can imagine a dozen scenarios and I’ve seen a half dozen scenarios myself where that has happened.”
Staffing is a big issue in Nova Scotia’s health system and Audain says doctor shortages are an issue right across the country and beyond.
“There is no doubt that access to care is an issue,” said Audain. “And there are going to be instances where emergency departments don’t have enough staff to stay open during the hours they would like.”
Audain said it’s also not uncommon for on-call physicians to not be on site at the hospital and believes it’s unrealistic to assume all on-call doctors could be in house during all on-call hours.
“Most on-call doctors, at least in the central zone, are not in-house,” said Audain. “But certainly they would be there if something acute happened.”
"I’ve worked with doctors on call on the phone for 31 years and that’s part of how we access, and not every hospital has a physician on site but they do have a physician available,” said Nova Scotia’s Health and Wellness minister Michelle Thompson.
In a statement to CTV News, Emergency Health Services (EHS), who provides paramedic services in Nova Scotia, said they are ready to respond anywhere when a call for emergency comes in.
“In time-sensitive medical emergencies, EHS Operations has responded to 911 calls at hospitals when care is required,” said EHS in the statement.
Deputy fire chief Veinot confirmed this was the first time members of the Middleton volunteer fire department responded to a 911 call from inside the hospital, but policy dictates that the fire department is mandated to attend all cardiac arrest calls.

“Yes I was born in Chicago lived here my whole life” I said. “And then you left” Jimmy said. “I planned on starting in the fire department here but uh” I said sipping my drink. “If you don’t wanna talk about it it’s ok” Jimmy said.
“The night my brother died I was at the Chicago Fire academy finishing up some things” I said. “I had gotten certified earlier that day but I just wanted to run drills” I added. “You don’t have to continue” he said putting his hand on mine.
“So I stayed later while my brother was being taken from his home I was supposed to meet him for dinner, he wanted to celebrate me” I said. “They were supposed to take me and Justin … but” I said tearing up. “I’m sorry” Jimmy said. “Not many people know that.. I don’t blame myself I just wish I could’ve helped him” I said.
“He’d be proud of you I’m sure” Jimmy said. “I know he would” Herman added. “Me too” I said. “Attention everyone I’d like to raise a toast for my late brother Justin” I said standing up. “Justin was an amazing older brother and a great father he had an amazing life this is to him” I said easing a glass and everyone did.
“To Justin” everyone said. I sat back down. “Shoot I should be going” I said. “You want me to walk you out” Jimmy said. “Sure” I said. We walked out together. “You good” Jimmy said. “I.. just … can’t find my keys” I said looking through my purse.
“Jay drove you” Jimmy said. “I’m sorry I just” I said crying. “Hey come here” he said hugging me. “I just miss him so much” I said. “I know” Jimmy said. “Sorry I’ve only known you for like two months and I’m telling you all this” I said.
“It’s alright can I take you home” Jimmy said. “Yeah thank you” I said.
Jimmy took me home and walked me up to my apartment door.
“Despite everything I had fun tonight you are a really great girl” Jimmy said. “Borelli you are really cool” I said he laughed. “You are too and not scary like your Dad” Jimmy said. “Yeah but I can be watch out” I said.
“I’ll keep my distance” Jimmy said. “Don’t go to far might have to track you down” I said. “Alright I won’t” Jimmy said. “Goodnight” I said kissing his cheek. “Night I’ll see you tomorrow on shift” Jimmy said.
“See you” I said shutting the door.
He’s definitely different from Sean….

JAY HALSTEAD
The Freeing Bliss of Adrenaline
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Requested: yes
Prompts: none
Warning(s): angsty, happy ending
Author's note: Haven't written for Jay in a while! This will be the last one shot of the year. I've been working on imagines the entire day. Now I'll take some time off since New Year is in less than a hour! p.s. I just added some more spice to Jay’s fight! How’d you like it?
Happy New Near!!!!!
Note: It's important that you guys read my newest Hank Voight one shot to not be confused further into this one. Click here!
~
"Relax babe I'll be fine," You smiled impishly at Jay and leaned against your newest child. The large two-wheeled beauty was the highlight of your day.
But Jay eyed your Yamaha r6 skeptically. He saw a fair number of criminals die from crashing motorcycles less intimidating than the one behind you. He trusted you to be careful, but it didn't help him sleep at night any better than he did before. The damned matte black motorcycle was the cause of his nightmares.
"Just," He sighed. "Be careful."
You chuckled in adoration and kissed him. The two of you were aesthetically pleasing to see. Especially next to your large motorcycle.
"I'll see you at 7?" He nodded in confirmation and helped you with your helmet.
For effect, he slapped the top of it and didn't leave until you were out of his line of vision.
Jay rolled his eyes when you purred the engine for effect.
***
The motorcycle ride through the tunnel was freeing, especially upon exiting it.
Jay didn't understand how freeing the rides you've had felt. You left your worries behind in the dust whenever you roared the engine. You felt like you could do anything.
Your left hand is working the clutch and the turn signal, your right hand is working the front brake, your right foot is working the rear brake, and your left foot is working the gears up & down. The ride was a physical & emotional pleasure, with a layer of anxiety & adrenaline.
For a moment you wanted to close your eyes. To enjoy the feeling of freedom.
But you snapped out of it, just like every time; Jay's words rung in your mind. Be careful.
You were.
But the car that slammed into you wasn't.
***
The members of firehouse 51 arrived on scene in recod time. People were watching on the side next to their cars; the whole road was blocked with cars.
"I didn't know what to do," The officer on scene told Matt. "The motorcycle's crushing her, but I didn't want to do anything until you guys got here."
"Her?" He asked, surprised to hear it. "It's a good thing you didn't move her." That cop did exactly the right thing by not moving the weight off you until they had facility to adequately treat any injuries.
"She looks experienced," The man  sighed with anxiety, looking as if he aged 20 years in a span of 15 minutes. "The motorcycle's a Yamaha r6. Definitely not a beginner's bike."
The smoke that came from the bike was enough to quicken their pace. "All hands-on deck." Matt announced and proceeded to give out orders.
"Otis get the backboard."
"On it."
The rest of the men appeared around you. Severide at the front. It only took him a glance at your custom-made helmet to know that it was you. "Holy shit..."
"What's wrong Severide?" Cruz asked him.
"That's Y/N."
"Who's she?" The team asked him.
"Jay's girlfriend." Severide whispered. "Hey you!"
The cop turned to him, trauma in his eyes. "Call Intelligence."
"Why? This isn't a crime scene."
"That's Jay Halstead's girlfriend on the ground. Get him here now!"
Back where you were, truck was discussing your situation.
"We need to get this bike off her," Gabby said hurriedly.
"81 watch for the hot pipes," The team was working on getting it off you. "This thing's a beast, got to weight 500 lbs." Matt said.
"Okay easy guys," Sylvie had your helmet in her hands. "Possible spinal injury and head trauma."
"Okay let's get this off," All hands were truly on deck as Casey counted down to three. They took your demolished motorcycle and placed it away from you.
"Jay's gonna freak," Severide commented when his eyes fell on your leg. It was completely crushed. Red with blood and completely split in half.
"We need to get the helmet off of her." Sylvie instructed, changing places.
"Alright Mouch."
It was hard for you to decipher the voices because little did they know...
You were conscious under there.
You barely recognized Severide as he barked out commands left and right.
You felt the strap of your custom-made helmet being cut off. The pain that shot through your leg when they secured it had you wincing to the pint your lip started to bleed.
When they took it off it took several seconds for the light to push through to you. You could barely breathe, let alone move your neck to look at the firefighters credited as your lifesavers. Severide cupped the back of your neck and you could only look at him.
"Kelly..." You murmured, tears gathering in your eyes. The times he and Jay had told you to be careful...
You should have listened.
"Y/N don't move. You're okay," He reassured you but you only widened your eyes. "You've been in an accident."
Tears started to fall. "Kelly..."
"No don't speak," He said quietly.
You coughed, "The...other..."
"The other?" He repeated.
"Collision..."
They were losing you. "Hey! Y/N stay with me! What collision?"
A few meters away, Matt and Boden inspected the road and the remains of your bike. "It's dented. Like someone crashed into her."
Kelly's screams brought them back to reality and Matt ran to get you.
He crouched down, his face hovering over you and blocking the sun. "Y/N did someone else crash into you?"
More tears started to fall. "They fell...off."
Boden looked around until he noticed several aggressive lines from tires scattered around the road.
He stepped closer to the edge and looked.
Until he saw.
"This is Battalion Chief 25," He radioed. "We need another ambulance to our location. This was a vehicle collision. I repeat a vehicle collision!"
***
"She still hasn't woken up," Will told his younger brother. "The injuries she sustained were more dangerous than we thought."
"Will what the hell is that supposed to mean?!"
"There were some complications with the surgery," Will tried to reason calmly. "She started hemorrhaging. They got the bleeding under control, but they had to put her in a medically induced coma. Hey! Jay wait- "
The detective stormed outside. The ringing in his head was getting louder and the voices around him became a distant callout.
Two arms stopped him from raging out.
He pushed and pulled but the man before him didn't move.
Kelly didn't move.
"Jay man, you need to stop!"
He didn't stop. Not even when Sharon Goodwill came to break them apart herself. Jay pushed through and disappeared outside, not daring to enter a car because of what had happened to you.
Kelly and Will found him in a bar eventually.
They took him home, watched over his place as he showered the alcohol off. They helped him in bed, even pulled the covers over him like you used to.
Jay's body was warm under the covers, but deep within he was anything but.
He missed your presence in the bed, your body against his in the shower…
Even your jokes during dinner.
It wasn't the same without you. He wasn't the same.
But no one understood him.
Only you did.
But you were in a coma. Unreachable.
He hugged your pillow on which traces of your perfume still lingered and cried like a baby.
***
The man rushed at Jay, his fist pulled back by a mile to punch him. Jay ducked but the man growled and started swinging punches at him. It came to a point of giving up for the man. Jay was ducking, backing up, sliding to the side; doing all the things needed to slip right through his fingers. He moved quickly, confident in his abilities.
Jay sidestepped before thrusting his fist against the man's face, reeling the man back so he staggered on his feet. A stray of blood fell out of his mouth, but not even that was stopping Jay from doing more damage.
Whatever force had him possessed, it wasn't letting go.
Jay slammed his fist into the man's face like the impact didn't bother him at all. The man smashed into a wall, fell to his knees, and clutched his face and trembled as his head fell forward. Jay placed a foot on the back of his head and slammed his face on the ground without thinking twice. The man groaned but didn't give up.
He twisted his body under the pressure of Jay's boot and grabbed his ankle.
It really didn't take long before Jay had him completely pinned to the ground again. He started throwing punches to his face until there was nothing but blood coating his hands.
He broke his nose, knocked out his teeth and broke his jaw.
Maybe even more.
He couldn't take a better look because he was taken away.
"What the hell is your problem Halstead!?" His sergeant barked.
"He deserved it." Jay mumbled. It really was his only excuse.
"If you're not fit to work," Voight neared his face to Jay's. "I'll take you off the case."
"You can't."
Hank only shook his head, "I can, and I will. Listen… You're a good kid Halstead and I'm sorry for what happened to Y/N but that's not an excuse for what you just did, and you know it."
"Get yourself together." Was the last thing Hank told him before he disappeared.
His girlfriend and the newest member of Intelligence took pity and came to his side. "She's going to be fine, Jay."
"You don't know that" Jay mumbled.
She only smiled sadly, "I've been there."
"You ride motorcycles?"
She shook her head with a roll of her eyes, "No. I was shot while working for the FBI. Hostage situation. I was one of them. A part of the reason why I joined special operations but that's a story for another day."
She leaned against the car with him, "As I was saying... I was badly injured, Jay. The doctors had to put me in a medically induced coma too."
"How'd you get through it?" He asked. She shone in a completely different light to him now.
"The people that mean the most to me were by my side. For me it was family that helped me push through and fight," she sighed, her hands twined together. "You're her anchor Jay. And if you're not being strong for her... Who will she lean onto? Who will help her push through and fight?"
"Doctors believe hearing stories in parents' and siblings' voices exercises the parts of the brain responsible for long-term memories." She recalled what was once told to her.
"Hey detective! Sergeant Voight is asking for you," A police officer yelled a couple yards away. Voight's girlfriend smiled and Jay could swear that he could see blush taint her cheeks. Jay and you won 20 bucks a few months back thanks to her and her blush.
"Be what your sergeant is to me."
Jay nodded smiling.
Before she was out of his line of vision she turned back and yelled to him, "Maybe take a shower too! I heard that helps!"
He rolled his eyes at her.
***
When he sat at your hospital bed, he didn't know what to say. Every word mattered to him. It's been weeks since the last time you opened your eyes.
And in those weeks a lot of things happened to him.
He hoped that now, after all that had happened, he was good enough of an anchor for you to hold onto.
He grabbed your small hand in his bigger one and kissed the back of it. You looked peaceful. Not your usual bubbly self; the version of yourself that lived for adrenaline and everything life had to offer.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you," He started, brushing a stray strand of hair from your face. "I didn't know what to do…"
"I had your bike fixed," He informed quietly. "Although I don't think you'll ever want to sit on one again."
He paused. "But then again… You're batshit crazy."
Jay spent a long time talking to you about a million things. He made up for the times he failed to be there with you.
"Detective Halstead?" A nurse had joined him in the room. "Visiting hours are over."
"Oh," Was all he said. "I guess I should get going?"
She smiled sadly.
With a torturous sigh, he leaned down and kissed you. A tiny piece of his heart broke at the lack of response your once warm, now cold lips gave him. "It's not the same without you."
***
Chicago's cold wisps of air hit him without mercy the moment he stepped out. No one really payed him much mind. Occasional glances from girls that were passing by was something he was used to.
He was searching for his car when a figure jumped in front of him.
"Geez Will," Jay sighed. "The hell is wrong with you?"
"Nothing," He was beaming like a madman.
"Whatever it is you came here to tell me, just say it." He grumbled.
"Y/N labs came back."
Jay stopped in his tracks and turned to face his brother. For the first time in weeks he had hope shining within his irises.
"And?"
"She pulled through. They'll wake her up tomorrow."
Before another word could leave his mouth, Jay hugged him like his life depended on it.
It did in a way.
He broke down at the parking lot in the arms of his brother having gotten the best news ever.
"Let's get you home bro. You'll see Y/N tomorrow."

A Little Braver - 64
This is a very special chapter for Rowan. We are getting closer to the end this chapter means a lot. After all he went through this is finally the beginning of his new phase. I hope you will love this chapter.
CW: very light smut
Tumblr media
The wildfires had lasted a week, then relief came with heavy rains that lasted for a few days and slowly put off the fires all over Terrasen. After that the citizens had officially declared summer to be over as the weather went back to more familiar temperatures. The city had been covered by some of the regional teams, but Dorian had been ecstatic when his teams had gone back to him after a couple of well deserved days off. Then normality had resumed.
Around September he had announced that central station was going to reopen and Ilias had been appointed captain and Dorian had managed to recover its original crew. Ilias had been over the moon.
Aelin shouted in joy when Dorian had told her that central had received the green light to reopen. She had hugged and kissed Dorian and added that they finally had an administration and a government that was actually doing something.
November had slowly rolled in and with it the first snow of the year, Aelin had been as happy as a kid, and Rowan had taken her to the woods for a stroll and they had finished the day with a snowball fight.
That mid November morning though, was special and important for Rowan. He was finally graduating from paramedic school and she was the proudest girlfriend ever. He had done beautifully and finished at the top of his class. She had no doubts considering the hard work he had punt into it.
With the passing of the months his ptsd had improved leaps and bounds. The nightmares and the bursts of anger had almost stopped and his sessions with the therapist were now only every two weeks and the therapist was considering to move to once a month. He had become much better at communicating and Aelin thought it was almost impossible to fall even more for him. She was so proud of him for many reasons and that’s why she was making bacon and eggs that morning.
“Do I smell non burnt bacon?” A set of hands landed on her hips and a kiss landed on the back of her head.
A few months prior Aelin had tried to make bacon and almost burnt down the kitchen. Luckily she was prepared and it all resulted in a burnt breakfast and one of Rowan’s favourite pans to be binned. Aelin had bought him a brand new one the next day.
“Don’t distract me, buzzard.”
He pulled back and went to prepare the coffee and the eggs.
“How are you feeling? I can finally call you paramedic Whitethorn.”
“I can’t believe it’s finally here. These have been some amazing six months, but I am ready for the real stuff.”
He was right, they had been six very eventful months. Fenrys had officially taken his test and had become a fully fledged firefighter. A while before him had been Borte’s turn and Dorian had managed to leave her at east.
Lorcan had officially finished his time in the airforce, found his replacement and started civilian life.
Connall and Vaughan had come back from their holiday that had lasted longer than expected.
Slowly they had began working on a plan to open their own civilian school. They had found a location with a disused airstrip that belonged to Orynth airport and were looking in getting ready and finish the bureaucratic process to obtain ownership.
Aelin flipped the bacon and was proud when it looked nice and crispy “I am almost a pro.”
Rowan chuckled at her side “When will I know which house I have been assigned to?”
Aelin knew. Lys had told her the previous day after she had finished the meeting with chief Harker. The man had assigned Rowan to east under Lys and Elide’s supervision.
“Sometimes today, I guess.” She lied, trying very hard to keep her face straight.
“As long as I don’t go in a regional team, I have heard enough from you guys not to want to work there.”
Aelin plated his bacon “eat, captain.” She still loved to call him so. He will always be her captain. The moniker had a deep meaning for her.
“Yes ma’am.” His salute was sloppy on purpose and she laughed “Is this how you salute your superior?”
Rowan grabbed the hem of her hockey jersey and pulled her closer and kissed her deeply “no, this is the right way.”
Aelin pulled back quickly. That was dangerous territory and that morning they did not have the time to indulge and risk being late “breakfast.”
An hour later they were both in the bedroom getting ready. Or more likely, Rowan was. Aelin was sitting on the bed staring at him don his blue paramedic uniform. The official one, the one reserved for ceremonies. On a daily basis they would wear blue polo shirt and fleeces, and cargo pants.
Aelin jumped off the bed and stopped in front of him. She fixed his tie, although it was already perfect and peeled off non existent pieces of fluff, then straightened his name tag.
“You look amazing.”
Rowan straightened his back with pride.
“Are you ready?”
They both left the house and got to Aelin’s car. In the end she had bought an hybrid too after hers had kicked the bucket, so Rowan had gone car shopping with her and convinced to go for a hybrid. She was now in love with her car.
The ceremony was happening at the fire academy, the only TFD location with a garden big enough to have a marquee and allow rows of chairs.
Aelin parked in the staff car park. Being an instructor had its perks.
They reached the main area and walked to the desk that had been placed to welcome the graduates and sign them in.
Hand in hand they walked to the desk and Rowan saw Remelle in the distance. Alas, the woman had passed although, according to Lysandra, with a mark that was a bare pass. She was positive she didn’t want to be a patient under Remelle’s care.
“Rowan, we made it.” She walked closer but he stepped aside.
“Yes, we did.”
“Aren’t you curious to know where you will be assigned? I asked my dad to pull some strings and get me assigned to one of the city houses.”
Aelin had to restrain her face to morph in an evil grin. Lysandra had told her all the assignment and Remelle had landed in a regional team. Not one of the bad ones, but still a regional one. Lys knew the five city captains and would not inflict the woman upon any of them.
Rowan groaned and grabbed Aelin’s hand “good luck.” And dragged her away. Once outside he let out a ragged breath.
“Don’t worry, I doubt chief Harker inflicted her presence to any of us in the city.”
Rowan turned to her “did Lys pulled strings for my assignment? I don’t want special treatment.”
Aelin grabbed his hand “She let chief Harker decide your fate. She had no part in it. She promised me that.”
Rowan relaxed.
“Everything you have achieved is because of your hard work.” She kissed him softly and in that instant Remelle passed behind them.
Aelin let Rowan reach his seat and she went to hers. Her team was already there. When planning the rota she had made sure that they were off. All of her team had asked Rowan if they could attend. He was part of the family and, after today, he would officially be one of them. She was looking forward their reaction at the news.
“Morning captain.”
“Team…”
“How is our graduate? Excited?”
“He is, very much.”
Fenrys and Aedion had joined them too. South station first shift was meant to be off and they had tagged along. Fen was excited to be there for Rowan after his friend had supported him for fire academy.
Aelin was gutted that Sellene had to work and could not take a day off and Enda had returned temporarily to Doranelle with his husband to deal with some bureaucratic stuff for their move. The couple had bought a house and had started working on the restaurant which it was on track to open on the solstice day. They were planning a grand opening and Aelin had told them that it was their turn to be off at east station and they were all joining.
Once everyone was seated, Chief Harker went to the podium “Good morning, friends and family. Thank you all for coming today to celebrate our eleven graduates. They did a grand job and today they can finally join the TFD family.” The chief turned to the graduates “you have done well in training, but from your first shift it will become real and it will be time to put into practice all you have learned. Wear that uniform proudly.”
Aelin was ready for the camera. She had to take photos to send to Sellene and Rowan would send some to Mark too. His friend was doing well too and had opened a garage and also helped a friend to teach in a flight school near the desert. Sometimes he would also take tourists on air tours of the area. He had been happy to hear that his friend was doing really well.
Speeches over, the graduates got ready as Lys and the Chief prepared the table to hand out the diplomas and the badges.
“When I call your name, step forward.”
One by one they filed and Rowan waited. He knew he was going to be the last one. At every one of his classmate he cheered loudly, then Remelle turn came and saw the woman bow and send kisses to everyone. Rowan snorted. She behaved like a star in front of her fans. Two more people and it was his turn.
“Whitethorn.” At his name he stood and walked to the podium, shook hand with both the chief, Lys, and all the other instructors present there.
Lys passed him his diploma and badge then he turned and showed it to east team. To Aelin.
She was standing, clapping loudly as Fenrys at her side was taking videos with her phone. He smiled at her and Aelin blew him a kiss.
Everyone got back to their chairs and the chief took the stage once more “We have a tradition, we ask the best student of the course to give a speech and this year I am proud to call on stage Rowan Whitethorn. He finished the program on full marks and showed great dedication to the job.”
The chief motioned Rowan to get on stage again and he got to the microphone “Thank you chief. I am not great at speeches, I guess that’s a skill that they don't teach you in the airforce,” his gaze landed on Lorcan and Fenrys “Being here today means the world to me. This was my second chance after my previous career crumbled in front of me. This course helped me through some tough times and I fell in love with it everyday and I am very looking forward to join whatever station I will be assigned to. I am looking forward to this new stage in my life. And I want to thank one person in particular, my other half Aelin. She has been at my side from day one, she supported me, studied with me and pushed me when I felt lost. If I am on this stage today is because of her.” He looked at her and he was positive Aelin was crying.
Rowan got off stage and then the graduates were asked to stand and recite an oath. Something similar to the Hippocratic oath taken by doctors. Rowan stood proudly and recited it out loud.
After the oath the chief released them all.
Rowan walked to his friends. Aelin hugged him tightly while the rest of east station joined in, including Fenrys. Aedion and Lorcan had stood aside and stared at the mayhem.
Lysandra joined them a moment later “Let’s go and find a quiet corner, I have something for Rowan.”
They all moved away and then Lysandra passed a letter to Rowan “Congratulations, you deserve this and you really were the best in the programme and chief decided to reward you.”
Rowan grabbed the envelope and opened it. He quickly scrolled through until he read his assignment.
“So? You are killing us,” said Ansel eager to know.
“East station.”
The group erupted in loud cheers and everyone went to him again to compliment him “you are one of us, captain,” shouted Ress, patting his shoulder “We needed another good basketball player.”
Rowan was speechless. It was the dream, he looked at Aelin and she was beaming.
Elide hugged him, “the three of us are going to have a grand time.”
Fenrys hugged Rowan after he was free “I knew you’d kick ass. Welcome to the TFD.”
Then Aedion stepped up and patted his shoulder “Welcome to the family, brother.”
It was a lot. Rowan was so full of joy and love that he felt like exploding. He was officially part of their family now and he felt honoured.
“Lunch anyone? We need to celebrate.”
“I can call Emrys,” said Brullo “he always space for us and when we tell him why we are celebrating he will be happy.”
The party had been moved to Emrys and they all had a wonderful afternoon.
Now Aelin and Rowan were heading home. She had been driving and his hand had spent its time between her thighs. She was wearing a skirt and Rowan was having fun teasing her.
“Eyes on the road.”
Aelin moaned and kept driving not thinking about what he was doing. She had spent the whole day fantasising about him. She loved Rowan in uniform.
Finally after a long half hour they got to the house and Aelin almost rushed out of the car while Rowan took his time on purpose, just to tease her even further.
He chuckled when saw her ran through the door “get in.”
“Someone is needy…” he joked while standing on the doorstep.
Aelin closed the distance and grabbed the back of his neck with her hand “get in here before I beg you to fuck me on the threshold.”
Rowan closed the door and his lips were on hers in an instant. Hands roaming both bodies in desperate need.
“I have been dreaming of peeling off this uniform from you all day long. I almost dragged you to my office at the academy and let me fuck me senseless.”
Rowan pulled back and laughed “I love that I still have this effect on you.”
Aelin kissed him gently “always, buzzard.”
“Come…”
Together they walked to the bedroom and Rowan pushed Aelin on the bed and moved back.
“Let me entertain you, my queen.”
Rowan slowly started removing his jacket while swaying his hips and turning around to show his butt to Aelin. The jacket fell off.
Then it was the turn of the tie and Aelin grabbed with a grin that did promise naughtiness.
Aelin played some music and Rowan started moving to the rhythm “Go on, Whitethorn show me some sexy moves.”
He walked closer and unbuttoned his shirt and once his chest was exposed he started brushing his hand on his pecs in a very sensual way. The gaze in Aelin’s eyes was almost predator and full of lust and he found that it turned him on so much, being looked that way by her. Proof of that was starting to show in his trousers which were all of a sudden too tight.
Aelin leaned back on her forearms and spread her legs in provocation. She was wearing a long skirt and she had pulled it to her thighs.
“Naked, captain… I want you naked.”
Very slowly, Rowan undid his belt while staring at Aelin opening her blouse and exposing her breasts to him. And while with one hand she teased her exposed peak, with the other she had reached between her legs and was tracing circles around her bud.
He was so busy staring at Aelin playing with herself that he had forgotten what he was doing. She was beautiful and there was nothing sexier than her half nakedness. Gods, those breasts, he wanted nothing but bury his face in them.
He finally removed his trousers remaining in his boxer briefs.
“You are so ready and hard for me.” She breathed while flicking her nipples and plunging a finger inside her.
Rowan turned and pulled off his briefs, exposing his bare arse to her and Aelin moaned her pleasure at the view.
“You are magnificent, captain.”
He turned and saw Aelin with her blouse and bra off, while her skirt was scrunched up to her waist, her underwear gone and her legs spread apart.
Rowan climbed in bed and removed her skirt in a swift motion “I want you naked all for me to enjoy this body…” his lips traced her abdomen with maddening slowness and Aelin buried her hand in his long hair. She had told him over and over again that she loved his new look with long hair and a nice trimmed beard. Her mouth traced the lines of his jaw, nibbling then at his neck where she knew he was most sensitive.
Rowan hummed in pleasure and she felt him bury his face between her legs “please…” she begged him and within seconds she had started to lose all sense of space and time.
“I love you so much,” he breathed against her core “and all of this is mine…” Rowan licked a stripe of her sex and Aelin groaned in pleasure. Then Rowan stood in surprise and lifted her and walked to the wall and pinned Aelin against it “let me show you what you mean to me…”
And so Rowan did. They claimed each other twice and now they lay sprawled on the bed, Aelin tucked to Rowan’s side and her face buried in his neck.
Aelin’s hand traced lazy circles on his chest following his tattoo “it will be fun having you at the firehouse everyday, the guys are so excited.”
Rowan played with her hair sprawled on his chest “I guess they didn’t send me at south to avoid having a fight between army, airforce and navy.”
Aelin laughed “camp Ashryver.” A soft kiss on his pec “you have Lys and Elide to learn from, they are amazing.”
“What happens after my six months? I won’t be able to stay.”
Aelin hummed “I have a theory about Lys. She hasn’t confirmed yet but I know her.”
Rowan looked at her with interest.
“There is a reason why she has started teaching at paramedic school.”
“Uh?”
“I have a feeling Lys is thinking about plan B.” She explained “Lys wants kids badly and if she gets pregnant, firehouse life is not easy and not possible with kids. So I guess she is thinking about keeping her options open with the chief.”
“She is an amazing teacher.”
“I know it’s coming. She has been brooding for a while. I keep expecting her to tell me they finally did it. And Aedion is just as bad.”
“Ansel will be happy. The first firehouse baby.”
Aelin kissed him “so she stops pestering me.”
Rowan chuckled and pulled her closer then his arm outstretched and grabbed his phone “Sellene will be here in an hour, we better get ready.”
“We have no food ready.”
Rowan brushed his lips to hers “I’ll prepare something. She is probably tired from work.”
Sellene arrived an hour later, all beautifully dressed up in a very business like attire.
“Hi Sel,” Aelin went for a hug and the woman took it and sighed deeply “all okay?”
“No,” added the woman walking in and leaving her bag against the sofa “I hate my fucking job.” She sat heavily on the sofa and Aelin went at her side.
Rowan appeared a moment later probably alerted by his cousin’s voice.
“We finally got a CEO and tonight he had the guts to tell me that leaving at five was not a good example to all other workers. That it put me in a bad light as someone slacking off.” Her hands were in fists on her lap “I always finish at seven and I go to work at eight. I gave up my days off in the last three weeks and this asshole now is accusing me of not working if I go at five for one night?”
“Why don’t you quit?” Aelin asked her. Sellene had been having problems at work for a while now and every time Aelin saw her, she was stressed.
“I love being here, but a part of me wished I never took the job,” the sigh that left her was deep “I am tired of the corporate world.”
Rowan sat at the opposite side of his cousin “Sel, you need to do what makes you happy.”
The woman sniffled “I know, mr paramedic,” then threw her arms around Rowan “I am so proud of you, and Aelin sent me the pictures and the video. You look amazing in that uniform.”
“He was the top student.”
“I had no doubts.” Sellene brushed his hair “Your parents would be so proud of you, Rowan. Enda and I sure are.”
Rowan kissed Sellene’s cheek “let me check the food.”
“He seems so much better.”
Aelin nodded “he is. He had a few ups and down but his therapist is happy with the progress.”
“I am glad I am here for all of this. The Whitethorn clan is big, really, really big, but Enda and Rowan were like my little brothers. I loved them so much and growing up we were inseparable,” she explained “it was tough on both of us when Rowan’s family left. All the rest is history. But being here now… I love it and Enda and Micheal are excited too. It’s like the family is together once more and now we have you as well…”
The two women kept chatting happily until Rowan returned to the living room announcing that dinner was ready.
“Rowan, it smells amazing.” Exclaimed Sellene when she arrived in the kitchen and saw the meal at the table.
“Mum used to make it a lot. It might not be as good as hers, but I tried.”
Sellene laughed “even I, cannot replicate your mum’s cooking. She was on another level.”
Aelin took her first bite and hummed with delight “I have no idea how was the original, but is incredible.”
Rowan laughed “at least Aelin is easy to please when it comes to food. She eats anything.”
Aelin grinned deeply “I am his bottomless pit,” she leaned forward and kissed his cheek.
“That she is. It’s her official call sign.”
Sellene kept eating and enjoyed the happiness in his cousin. Such a difference from the last time she had visited, when he looked sad and lost. She was glad he had found Aelin, she was the right person for him.
“So, when are Enda and Micheal coming back?”
“I spoke to him this morning, they have the ferry booked for the end of this week and then they can finally work on the restaurant.”
“Good,” said Aelin “I have a firehouse of hungry, hungry hippos looking forward to the solstice celebrations.”
“Oh yes, I have seen your team eat. I am impressed.”
“We move a lot.”
“Are you excited to start?” She then asked Rowan.
“Very much, but I am also terrified I will forget everything I have learned.”
“No you won’t and you will learn a lot more from both of them.”
Rowan grabbed Aelin’s hand and squeezed it.
He was grateful to her. She had been his rock, Aelin kept him motivated those days when he cold not function. She had pushed him and supported through all the bad months they had. He was always afraid that she would call it quits on him when he had his bouts of anger, but instead she stood at his side and helped, fully aware that it was not her fault. He was the luckiest man alive.
“I have a bit of chocolate cake left,” announced Aelin standing and going to the fridge “us ladies will have a treat and Sellene needs it.”
“Every excuse is a good one for you to have chocolate.”
“Yes Ro, I leave the carrots to you.”
He stuck out his tongue to her, then dipped his finger in the frosting and smeared her nose with it.
The three laughed and the evening concluded with all of them on the sofa chatting happily, until Sellene announced that she had to go back to her place.
Aelin hugged her fiercely and whispered her to let her know if her boss needed some ass kicking.
Once Aelin and Rowan were alone once more, she hugged him “I feel bad for her. She is working like crazy and is getting little recognition.”
“I am worried too.”
Aelin sighed in his arms “come on sexy, let’s go to bed. You old man have to go bed early, you had a day full of excitement.”
Rowan lifted her in his arms “I am going to show what this old man is capable of.”
Aelin’s laughters resonated in the quiet house.

From The Ground Up:
Buck POV:
I don't know what to do. I already apologized to the 118, especially Cap, but they still treat me like shit. It's been 8 months since the lawsuit and I haven't gone out on a call once. I know if I told Maddie or my parents, they would tell me to "go home". I'm starting to think that may be the best thing for me. At least my family knows I'm not on blood thinners anymore. Sitting at home, nursing a beer, I made my decision. I'm going home.
The next day I call up the fire chief and ask if I can get an appointment for that day. They are thankfully able to get me in at 1. I glance at the clock seeing that it's 10am. I text Maddie to have her come over. She lets herself in with her key and I get up to hug her.
"Hey Mads"
"Hey Evan. So why did you want to talk to me?"
"I think I'm going to go home. Its been 8 months and I haven't been out on a call once. I have an appointment with the chief at 1 today. I don't want this to affect your relationship with Chim. He has actually been one of the only ones who has talked to me. Him and Hen have been friends, but Cap and Eddie. They just glare or say things to my face that I just can't take anymore. I'm gonna surprise dad, but I'll call Kelly, Matt, and Boden to let them know. I'll miss you but you know where I'll be."
I look at Maddie to see her with tears in her eyes but she looks understanding. She nods and says,
"I understand Evan. You need a "new" start. I will miss you but I'm glad Chim and Hen have been there for you. I'll help you pack once you get back from the chief since I have today off. I can call Hen and Chim to see if they'll help too, but they probably will anyway."
I nod and get up. She stands up and we hug for what seems like hours, but its only 5 minutes. When we separate, she takes my hand into hers and drags me towards the door.
"Mads what are you doing?" I ask amused.
"We are going out to get breakfast at our favorite diner, then we are picking up Chim and Hen, then coming back here so you can type up your resignation and us three can start packing as you go talk to the chief. After your meeting, you will call Kelly, Matt, and Boden like you said"
I just nod and get my shoes on. We get out to the car and decide on driving my Jeep. Maggie's diner is about 10 minutes away from my loft, so it doesn't take long to get there. The hostess sees us and smiles since we are regulars here and she shows us to "our table". Patti, our favorite waitress comes to our table and smiles when she sees us.
"Well look what the cat dragged in! The Buckley siblings! Y'all want your regular?"
We both nod and Patti winks at us and walks away. Maddie looks at me pointedly so I take that as a point to start thinking of what I should say in my resignation. As if reading my mind, she pulls out a pad of paper and pencil. I start writing and once I do I just keep writing and I don't even realize our food is here until it gets set in front of me. We eat, pay and then head out. Maddie calls Chim and Hen and they agree to head over to the loft, even if they are a bit confused.
"Hey buckaroo!" Hen greets when I open the door for her and Chim. I hug them both and let them in. They already know most about what is going on at the firehouse, so they aren't super surprised when I say I am leaving. I tell them I'm planning on going home to Chicago, as soon as possible. Maddie looks at the time and tells me to get going so I'm not late to the meeting, and that them three will get packing. I thank them and head out.
45 minutes later I'm walking into the fire chief's office.
"Firefighter Buckley" Chief Torres greets and I shake his hand.
"Thank you for seeing me today Chief Torres. I am here because I would like to transfer stations. Specifically to firehouse 51 in Chicago. As for why, things at the 118 have not been good. Captain Nash and Firefighter Diaz have been holding personal vendettas against me because of my lawsuit from 8 months ago. Firefighters Han and Wilson have been the only ones from the firehouse treating me like a human. They don't participate in the jibes towards me and they still talk to me. They don't deserve to be punished, but Nash and Diaz should be. They shouldn't be fired, but maybe suspended. But I will leave that up to you. I came from Chicago and I started at the 51. I made a family there and I would love to return to it."
The chief sits there for a few before nodding and pulling out transfer papers. He signs them and then stands up.
"I hate to lose a good firefighter, but I feel after what you said, I will be looking into Nash and Diaz. Have a good life in Chicago Buckley."
I stand up and shake his hand. I take the papers and walk out to my Jeep. I call Maddie to let her know I'm on my way back. When I get back to my place, I'm surprised at how much they had gotten packed up, but then again, I didn't have much. We call a moving company and book them for the next day. Next I call the men that have become my older brothers in all but blood, Matt Casey and Kelly Severide.
*Ring ring ring*
Matt: "Hey Ev! What's up?"
Buck: "Hey Matty, can you grab Kel and see if Boden is free? If he isn't just go somewhere private. I need to talk to you all."
Matt: "Sure. Is everything alright?"
Buck: "Yeah nothing bad. Just got something to talk to you about."
Matt: "Okay Ev, I have all of us in Boden's office with the door shut."
Buck: "Okay. So I just want to say this all at once so please don't interrupt me and ask questions at the end. Things here have not been good since the lawsuit. Chim and Hen have been good but Diaz and Nash have been cold and distancing me. I am hoping that I can be transfered back home. I have the papers ready, just need a spot. And before you ask, yes Maddie is okay with it. And no I haven't talked to dad, I wanna surprise both my parents. So what do you say Boden, you want another Herrmann on your team?"
Boden: "Okay Buck, I think we can make room here at 51 for you. I told you when you left there would always be a spot for you and I meant it. I would love for you to come back here. What do you think boys?"
Kelly: "Well Cub, I wish you came to us about the 2, I understand why you didn't. I want you to come home too and Matt here is agreeing with me. You want us to pick you up from the airport when you land?"
Buck: "That would be great. Can I stay with you guys? Until I find a place? That or I'll stay with my parents. I should be out there tomorrow late afternoon. I'll text you to let you know for sure"
Matt: "Sounds good Buck. Can't wait to see you. And don't worry, we won't tell your dad."
Buck: "Okay I'll see you guys tomorrow. Love you!"
All three: "Love you!"
*Click*
I want back into the living room where the three are sitting.
"Hey Mads, Chim, Hen. Boden told me I have a spot there and Matty and Kel said they'll pick me up from the airport. You said you booked one right?"
She nods, "yeah I did Evan. I'm glad Matt and Kelly will pick you up. I like that you are surprising mom and dad. Are you gonna stay there or with the boys?"
"I'm not sure yet. The boys said I can stay with them but if mom and dad want me to stay with them, I will"
"Not to interrupt this, but who are Boden, Kelly, and Matt?" Hen asks.
"Oh right! I forgot you guys don't know our friends and family from Chicago! So I was adopted after Evan wasn't able to save our older brother with a bone marrow transplant. He got adopted by Christopher and Cindy Herrmann in Chicago. He grew up there, became a firefighter like our dad and his godfather Mouch. He moved here and worked at the 118, as you know. When I moved here and started dating you Chim, I was able to reconnect with him, since I recognized his birthmark. We talked and cried. I told him how I was disowned by our birth parents because I am bi and he introduced me to our parents. They immediately unofficially adopted me into their family and so I call them mom and dad. Kelly and Matt are other firefighters at 51 and they all went to the academy together and became like brothers. Kelly and Matt are married." Maddie explained. I'm nodding along.
"Yep. Mom and dad treat Maddie like their own and I want to go home to Chicago because personally, it's toxic here for me. You guys are great and I love you but Eddie and Bobby are the worst right now. I know you stand up for me and I appreciate it a lot but I just need my original family. I'll keep in touch of course and I'll miss you but you are always willing to visit me in Chicago." I added on.
Chim and Hen nodded and got up to give me a hug.
The next hours fly by and the next thing I know, I'm landing in O'Hare airport. I see the men who are like my older brothers and run to give them each a hug.
"Hey Ev! How have you been?"
"I've been better but I'm do happy to be here." It's slightly muffled because I'm in the middle of hugging them. I pull back the they see my tears on my face and each wipe them off my face. I smile at them softly and they smile back.
"Hey Cub." Kelly says softly.
"Hi" I reply just as softly.
"Let's get out of here eh?" Matt asks.
I just nod and they each flank one of my sides whole carrying my duffle. The rest of my stuff is in the moving truck. We walk out to Matt's truck. I climb in and we take off to the 51. We stay in comfortable silence with me just watching the city go by. We get there 20 of so minutes later but it seems shorter than that. We get out and the go to each of my sides again. They have always been taller than me and I say I hate it but I secretly love it. I see my dad talking to my uncle Mouch in the break room. Sylvie Brett is the first one to see me and she gasps loudly making everyone turn toward me.
"SURPRISE!" I shout shocking them out of their frozen states.
Next thing I know I am tackled by my dad and godfather. Boden is secretly recording this for everyone.
"What the hell are you doing here?!" My dad and godfather ask at the same time.
"Well it's a long story which I will tell over drinks at Molly's tonight, but pretty much, things got crappy at 118, and I wanted to come home. Don't worry dad, Mads was the one to talk me into it. And only Diaz and Nash were the ones who were bad. Hen and Chim have been good." He just nods and they both step back so everyone else can hug me. The girls are next, Shay, Stella, and Sylvie come running up next hugging me super tight, but I'm hugging back just as tight. I hug everyone else except for 2 people I don't recognize. I turn to my dad questionably.
"Ah right. Evan, these are Darren Ritter and Blake Gallo. They are new to the house." I shake their hands and for some reason I get butterflies shaking Gallo's hand. I think the girls sensed something because they gave me knowing looks. I gave them 'the look' back.
"Hi, I'm Evan Buckley-Herrmann. I used to go by Buck but I think I'm gonna start going by Evan again." I smile at them. They smile back and shake my hand.
"Hi Evan, I'm Darren Ritter. I've been here for about a year."
"Hi, I'm Blake Gallo and I've been here about 5 or so months"
I smile and nod to each of them. When Gallo smiles back all I can think of is damn his smile is cute. Fuck I'm so gone on him and I just met him.
"Oh dad! I didn't tell mom either so I think I'll stay here until shift is done and then we can stop by home, pick her up and we'll all go to Molly's and meet up with the crew from Med and Intelligence?"
"Sounds good Ev. You wanna borrow some turnout gear and go with? If that's okay of course." He asked the last part directed towards Boden. Boden nods and so I agree pretty quickly. Almost as if it knows, the alarm goes off.
*Time skip to end of shift because I cannot write fire scenes for shit*
Dad and I walk out of the firehouse at the end of shift and get in his car. After about 5 minutes he speaks up,
"So what was that with Gallo?"
Shit. Play dumb.
"What do you mean?"
Good, good.
"Look, I know what flirting looks like, son. And I know you are gay since you came out to us in high school. I'm also not dumb, so I'll ask again, what was that with Gallo?"
I sigh. He always knows how to read me.
"He is cute, and I think I might be getting a crush on him, but it's nothing and he is most likely straight anyways."
"Well, I'm glad you told me, and I think you may have a better chance than you think."
And with that we pull into the driveway of my childhood home. We get out of the car and dad goes in first. I hear him say to mom,
"Hey honey, I have a surprise for you. Close your eyes"
After a few seconds he comes out and beckons me inside. I walk up and say,
"Hey mom."
She opens her eyes and shrieks when she sees me. She runs up to me and hugs me as tight as she can and I hug her back just as tight. Dad comes up to us and hugs us too. After a few we reluctantly separated.
"So what are you doing here?" She asks as she wipes the tears off her face. I tell her what I told dad and she nods and goes to get ready to go to Molly's. Dad and I do the same.
We get to Molly's and I'm bombarded by hugs again from my friends from Med and Intelligence. I am friends with Jay and Will Halstead, Mouse Gerwitz, Antonio Dawson, Hailey Upton, Adam Ruzek, Kim Burgess, Alvin Oilinsky, not Voight because of reasons, Kevin Atwater, Trudy Platt, Ethan Choi (he's not a dick here), Crockett Marcel, Natalie Manning, Maggie Lockwood, April Sexton, Connor Rhodes, Daniel Charles and Sharon Goodwin. They are all there and as soon as they heard I was back in town, they all came to Molly's. I also got hugs again from Kel, Matty, Joe, Otis, Sylvie, Stella, Shay, Andy, Boden, Tony, and Capp. I shake Gallo and Ritter's hands again. They all look at me expectantly, waiting for the story. I sigh and start talking.
"Okay so basically, you all remember how I was crushed under the truck? Well at my welcome back party, I had a pulmonary embolism in my ex-captains backyard. I wake up in the hospital and find out I need to go on blood thinners because I worked too hard doing my recertification. I go to dinner at my ex-captains house and find out why I can't go back on calls because of him. He is the one keeping me as a fire marshal. I make a dumb mistake and decide to sue the department and him. The lawyer threatened them all and tried to offer me a payout but I just wanted to go back to the firehouse. When I decided to come home, I hadn't been out on a call in 8 months. I got tired of it so I texted Maddie, my sister, and she came over. We went out to brunch at our favorite diner. On our way back to my loft, she called her boyfriend and his best friend, both of whom are my ex-coworkers but they were very vocal about my treatment and never shut me out. I went to talk to the chief, and he signed the transfer papers. I went back home to find that the three of them had packed all my things and Maddie booked me a flight for the next day, aka today. I called Matty, he got Boden and Kel into the office and I told them my plan. Next thing I know they are picking me up from O'Hare, we went to the firehouse, I surprised you all, went out on a few calls, went home to surprise mom, and came here to tell you my story."
I look around and see many shocked and furious faces.
"Okay I know those faces, you don't need to murder them, I told the chief what happened and recommend he suspend but not fire Diaz and Nash."
They all look more satisfied at that, but still mad. Gallo and Ritter just looked shocked.
"Wait wait wait, you are telling me that YOU WERE THE GUY TRAPPED UNDER THE TRUCK?!" Gallo asked, shocked.
I nod sheepishly.
"Yeah some kid was tryna blow up my captain but I was in his seat for the day. Don't remember why."
He just blew out a breath.
"Okay less sad things, what have I missed with you all?"
Jay speaks up first.
"Well Mouse and I finally got engaged!" He said, showing me his ring.
I jump up and go hug them both.
"I'm so happy for you two!"
They thank me and Connor goes next.
"Will and I finally got our heads out of our asses and got together."
I hug them both too and congratulate them.
"Matt and I are still together obviously" Kelly says. I roll my eyes and smack him on the head.
"I got a new girlfriend." Shay says slyly looking at Sylvie.
"I broke up with my boyfriend." Gallo says shrugging.
I feel both the girls and dads eyes on me but I very clearly ignore them. Everyone else is kinda confused but brushes it off.
"Chole is pregnant with my son!" Joe says excitedly.
"Oh my god dude congrats! I'm so happy for you!"
Everyone else shares something or say nothing new.
Couple hours later, it started to wind down and I'm at a table with the Halstead brothers, their other haves and Shay, Kim, and Hailey.
"So what's that with Gallo?" Mouse asks me pointedly. They all turn to me and I know my face is heating up.
"Nothing! There is nothing going on with Gallo!"
They all give me a 'drop the bullshit' look and I sigh.
"Okay fine, you all can stop giving me that look. I might have a slight crush on him. And it may be a little more now that I know he likes guys. But what if he doesn't like me?"
They all look at me in understanding.
"Evan, I love you, but why the fuck would he not want to go out with you? You are good looking, you are sweet, and anyone who wouldn't date you is dumb. And I'm a fucking lesbian." Shay says to me, everyone nodding along showing they agree with her.
"Yeah Cubby, I may not be a lesbian but you are like my brother, anyone who wouldn't date you is dumb" Kim adds on.
I sigh and nod. They all smile at me and we start talking about Jay and Mouse's wedding. Little did I know there was a very similar conversation at the table with Gallo, Ritter, Stella, Sylvie, Adam, and Andy.
Gallo POV:
"So Gallo, what was that with Evan?" Stella asks me.
"I have no idea what you are talking about"
"Cut the bullshit Blake. We all saw what was going on between you two" Andy says to me.
Fine, guess I'm not getting out of this one.
"Okay, I like him, but he is Herrmann's son! And I don't even know if he likes guys."
They all snort and start laughing then they look at me. I'm confused.
"Gallo, Evan is as gay as a fucking rainbow." Adam says to me in between laughter.
Wait, what?
"He's gay?"
They all nod.
Okay, I have a better chance now. They must've seen me thinking because Sylvie pats my shoulder and gets my attention.
"You should go for it. I've seen the way he's been looking at you all night. Just, maybe wait until tomorrow." She says, then walks over to Shay and grabs her hand. And pulls her up and out of the bar. The rest of them are not far behind and soon it's just Ritter, me, Evan, Cindy, and Herrmann. I go say goodbye to my best friend, the Herrmanns and Evan.
"Hey Evan, I'm gonna head out but it was nice to meet you" I hold my hand out for a shake but he pulls me into a hug shocking me at first before I hug him back. Once we pull apart I realize he is drunk because he plants a kiss on my cheek. My face heats up bright red. Ritter is looking at me amused and so I flip him off before we head out since he drove me and didn't drink tonight.
We get to my place and I wave goodbye. I fall asleep to the thought of Evan Buckley-Herrmann...
Buck POV:
I don't remember much from last night cause I ended up getting more drunk than I wanted too. I do however remember hugging Gallo. My face heats up at the thought of him. Oh god I can't believe I hugged him and kissed his cheek. He is never gonna wanna speak to me again. I'm pulled out if my spiral by dad knocking on my door.
"Come in!" I call
"Hey son, I thought you might have a headache after last night so here's some water and Tylenol. Also because I know you, I saw what you did to Gallo and just know, he doesn't hate you and actually texted me asking for your number, so if you get an unexpected text from a unknown number, that's all me. Love you, I'll see you in a few before we have to head in."
I nod and he closes the door. Well that's good that he doesn't hate me.
*Ding!*
I look over at my phone and see:
+773-675-6554:
Hey Evan! This is Blake Gallo. I hope you don't mind that Herrmann gave me your number. I was wondering if you wanted to get dinner tonight? As a date?
Hey Blake! I would love to! I also wanna apologize for last night, I was super drunk. I didn't mean to get that drunk. I'll see you at work today.
It's okay! I'll pick you up around 7? We get off shift at 6.
Sounds perfect! See you later!
See ya!
I groan and lay back on my bed. I stay there for like 30 seconds before I shoot up and start to freak out. Oh god I have a date. I have a date with Blake Gallo. I HAVE A DATE WITH BLAKE FUCKING GALLO! I lay face down on my bed like a teenager and stay there. I hear my door knock and I just groan. He comes in and chuckles at me.
"What's wrong?"
I just chuck my phone at him. They know my password since I don't ever really have much to hide from them, and if I do, I hide it good.
He reads the texts and laughs.
"Isn't that a good thing?" He asks me, amused.
"Yeah. But I have nothing to weaaar." I say sounding like a child.
"Well how about your mom goes and gets you some new clothes, since she knows your size, and then you are ready for your date. Sound good?"
I nod and get up.
"Okay. Now get dressed! We gotta leave in 5 minutes!"
I scramble to get dressed and we head out. I'm excited to have my first full shift at the 51. We pull in and get out. I smile when I see the "WELCOME HOME MINI HERRMANN" banner hanging up. We get ready and as soon as we are all ready, the alarm rings out. It was a quick one, a car accident. We were pretty busy today so it went by quick. I couldn't help but look at Blake when I thought no one was looking but a certain pair of husband's certainly saw this. They pulled dad off to the side to talk to him when we had a free moment.
"So why does Ev keep looking at Gallo?"
My dad laughs and tells then about the texts from this morning, but makes then promise that they won't let me know they know. (Yes I pulled a friends). They agree and as soon as they are done talking the alarm goes off one last time. Our last call went all the way to the end of our shift so I hurry and make dad leave quick, much to the surprise of those who don't know about the date. Gallo is not far behind them rushing out and a few people have knowing looks.
We get home and I see what clothes mom got me and decide on a maroon button up shirt and black jeans with my black doc martens. I gel my hair and about that time is when I get a text:
Blake:
Hey! I'm outside!
Okay! I'll be right out!
I double check I have everything and head out, saying bye to my parents. I walk out and see him leaning up against his car. He hugs me and I hug back, taking in his scent that seems oddly comforting. We break apart and he goes to open my door. I smile at him as I get in the car and he smiles back. He gets in and starts driving. I tentatively reach across the center console to grab his hand and he holds it. We smile at each other and he pulls into a small hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurant. We get out and he grabs my hand again as we walk in.
"Reservation for Gallo" he says to the hostess. She nods and grabs 2 menus taking us to our table. We look at them and decide what we want. He gets the chicken enchiladas with a coke and I get fish tacos with a sprite. She takes our orders and walks away. I reach across the table and hold his hand. We start talking about our childhoods. He learns I wasn't born to mom and dad and I learn about how his family died. We talk for so long we don't realize our food is here until it gets set down. We eat, and he pays even though I try to protest. He just says "I asked out on a date. If this goes well, you can pay for the next one." I sigh and realize he wasn't going to give it up so I relent. We head back out to his car and he drives us out to a ledge to look over the city. He has a truck and backed it up so we can lay on his bed to look at the stars. We cuddled there since he brought blankets to lay down. We didn't talk, I just had my head on his chest, watching the stars.
"Evan?" He asks softly.
I look up at him and respond, "yeah?"
He looks down at me and asks, "can I kiss you?"
I nod and meet him halfway. His lips are so soft and sweet. His tongue is asking permission to enter my mouth and I let it. I moan into his mouth and he does the same when I put my tongue in his. We make out for a few minutes before we have to take a breather. We rest our foreheads against each other.
"That was amazing," I breathed out.
He just nods and we sit there. He then leans in to kiss me again, this time much more chaste.
"Do you wanna come back to my place? We don't have to have sex, but I just want to snuggle you" he asks after a few.
I look up at him through my eyelashes and nod. We get out of his truck bed and he grabs the blankets and shuts the tailgate. I climb in and let my dad know I won't be home. He just sends back winky faces and tells me to be safe. I sent him the middle finger emoji and shut my phone off. He climbs in and we head to his place. He turns on the radio and I hear one of my favorite songs, From The Ground Up by Dan+Shay. I start humming along and then when Blake turns it up I start to sing which causes him to sing along too. We both laugh and are so joyful when the song ends that we keep singing along with the radio. We pull into his apartment complex and get out. We get up there and I realize I don't have pajamas. I tell Blake this and he tells me I can borrow a shirt and sweats from him. He hands them to me and I go change. We fall asleep pretty quickly, him spooning me from behind. I feel so comfortable in his arms and it just feels right. I never believed in soulmates, but Blake Gallo is making me believe in them now.
I wake up the next morning to see Blake looking at me lovingly. I smile back up at him and kiss him. We both smile into the kiss.
"I gotta get back to my parents before shift since I don't want to go in my nice clothes" I murmur against his lips.
"Or you could borrow my clothes if you want?" He says with a shrug.
I agree, not really wanting to head back to my parents. I borrow a pair of jeans a t shirt, neither of us looking at it closely.
We head out and go to the firehouse. I hold his hand across the center console again, occasionally pulling out joined hands to kiss them. On the way there he asks me to be his boyfriend and I agree immediately. When we pull in, we smile at each other and get out. We keep our hands joined, not wanting to hide this from our family. We hear wolf whistles and cheers and we just shake our heads with smiles.
"Hey kid! Nice shirt!" I hear Mouch say.
I turn around confused a little bit before Stella takes pity on me,
"Cubby, your shirt says 'Gallo'"
We both blush and walk away. I hear Ritter going to talk to Blake and I see the resident hubby's walking over to me. They pull me into Matt's bunk and push me onto the bed.
"Talk" they both say.
I sigh and say, "okay, so the day before yesterday, I got a text from Blake asking if he wants to go on a date. The night before when it was just Ritter, him, me, and my parents, when he came to say goodbye, I was so drunk I pulled him into a hug and kissed his cheek. I apologized the next morning but he asked me on a date and I said yes. He picked me up from my parents house, opened the car door for me like a gentleman, and we went to a Mexican restaurant, then out to the ledge that looks out over the city. We laid in the bed of his truck just watching the stars when he asked if he could kiss me. I said yes, we kissed a few times then he asked if I wanted to go back to his place. He said we don't need to have sex and that he just wants to snuggle me. I agree, let my dad know, which was a mistake considering he is a kid at heart. We sang along to the radio on the way back since my favorite song came on, we got back to his place and he gave me sweats and a shirt to wear. We laid in bed, with him as the big spoon. We woke up together and I was at first gonna ask him to drop me off at home but then he just said I can borrow clothes from him so we don't have to go back. He hands me what I'm wearing, we don't look at the shirt obviously. On the way here we hold hands across the console, I keep kissing our joined hands. We then walk into the firehouse and you know the rest."
They nod along to the entire rant and finally Matt asks, "Are you happy?"
I nod enthusiastically and say, "Very. I haven't been this happy in a long time"
They both nod and get up to give me a hug. I start to tear up because having their and my parents' approval are very important to me.
"As long as you are happy Cub, we are happy." Kelly says, Matt agreeing. At that, I finally let my tears fall and they hug me again and kiss my forehead. After a few, I finally get it together and head out of the bunk. I see Blake talking to Ritter, Otis, and Cruz in the bunk room, so I go up to him and hug him. He hugs me back, a little confused but not complaining. He kisses my forehead ignoring the other three who are looking at the couple with a fond look. They walk away to give us a little privacy, shutting the door.
"What's wrong baby?" He asks me.
I sniff and then look up at him, "Nothing. I am just glad that they are accepting of our relationship. I know we just had our first date last night, but I want to spend the rest of my life with you."
He looks down at me with tears in his eyes too, and kisses my forehead again then my lips.
"I can't imagine my life without you too. All I could dream about last night was marrying you someday and adopting kids with you. I genuinely feel like you are my soulmate. I love you."
At that, the tears start flowing, he wipes my tears with his thumbs and kisses me.
"I love you too" I tell him softly. At that, the alarm goes off and then we are off, but not without one more kiss.
When I climb into the truck, dad asks me if I'm okay. I nod and smile at him, telling him I'll talk to him later. He nods and we are off.
When we get back, Blake and I go to talk to Boden to fill out paperwork for our relationship. He tells us he is proud of us and thanks us for filling out the paperwork. We nod and he hugs us both.
We head into the lounge and decide to cude together on the couch, but not in Mouch's spot. I close my eyes and lay my head on his shoulder. I feel him lay his head on mine and then I am asleep. We wake up when the alarm goes off again.
"Rise and shine lovebirds!" Capp yells at us. We flip him off together. The fire goes out pretty quickly and we are headed back to the station. Blake asks me if we can talk when we pull in and I nod and ask Kelly if we can use his bunk to talk. He says sure, so we head there.
"Okay, I know we literally just started dating, but how would you feel about moving in with me? I know you are looking for a place and your stuff will be here soon. If you don't want to, that's fine, but I figured it would be better for you, and we can split the rent. Whatdya say?"
I take that in for a moment before nodding with a bright grin coming across my face.
"Yeah?" He asks, a hopeful look on his face.
"Yeah." I confirm with a bright grin.
"Yay!! I'm so glad you said yes!"
"I am too. I meant what I said when I said I want to grow old with you. I want to get married and have kids with you. I love you."
"I love you too." He then leaned down to kiss me and I kissed back.
We walk out of the bunk holding hands and smiling. As the shift comes to an end I tell him that I'll head back to my parents for the night and let them know what I'm planning on doing. He says okay and we kiss and head off in different directions. Dad and I get to their house and see my Jeep is there finally. I'm glad, because as much as I love my dad driving me, I need my own vehicle. We walk in and mom greets us. We eat and then I tell them I need to talk to them. They look concerned so I reassure them it's nothing bad.
"Mom, dad, as I'm sure you know by now, Blake Gallo and I are dating. And I know we just started dating but I feel as if I've known him my entire life. He is the person I want to grow old with. He is the person I want to marry someday. He is the person I want to adopt kids with. And I know he feels the same cause he told me. I love him and he loves me. So he asked me to move in with him just because he knows I'm looking for a place and the rent would be cheaper. So I said yes. I hope that's okay."
They look at me with proud looks and tears in their eyes.
"Evan, of course it's okay. After hearing that, I firmly believe you two are soulmates. I don't always believe in love at first sight, but I saw you guys the first time you saw each other and something clicked. Your mother and I will always love you and always be proud of you. We will help you move your stuff along with I'm sure the rest of the firehouse. They all saw something there, and I know you two are meant for each other."
At this point, all of had tears down our faces. I nod and don't say anything because I don't trust my voice. They pull me into a hug and we just hug for a long time. Eventually I speak, "I think I'll stay here for the rest of the week, since we have this weekend off, we can move my stuff then"
They nod and we all head off to bed, but not before they both kiss my forehead. I fall asleep that night thinking of the names Evan Gallo and Blake Herrmann.
The weeks goes by quick. Blake and I explain what we are gonna do and they all agree to help us that weekend. Saturday rolls around and we get everything unpacked pretty quickly since Ieft all my furniture and didn't have much. Next thing I know I'm FaceTiming Maddie, Chim, and Hen to introduce them to my Blake as my boyfriend a few weeks later. They are shocked at first but by the end, Maddie and Chim are coming over for Christmas in a few months. We say bye and hang up the phone. I sigh contently and look over at my boyfriend. He looks back at me lovingly. It's been about a month since we got together. I already bought a ring, but I'm gonna wait a little longer.
*Time skip*
It's now December, getting closer to Christmas time. I want to propose on Christmas in front of our family. Since we became more serious, my family accepted him more. They already liked him since they knew him before, but it's different than being a coworker vs your son's boyfriend. Maddie and Chim are coming like they said they would. They'll be here tomorrow. The firehouse tease us about our relationship, but we both know they are happy for us. They do the same thing with Kel and Matty and Shay and Sylvie, but it's all joking. Christmas rolls around and I'm nervous and excited at the same. We show up at my parents and they let us in. Maddie and Chim are there since they are staying there instead of a hotel. We start opening presents and when it gets to my turn for Blake, I get down on one knee and pull out the ring. Behind me I hear mom and Maddie gasp but right now in focused on Blake.
"Blake, ever since I first laid eyes on you in the lounge room, I knew I liked you. That then morphed into love. I can't see myself with anyone else. I want to have children with you. I want to grow grey and wrinkly with you. I want marry you. So Blake James Gallo, will you marry me?"
He nods yes and falls down to me and we hug and kiss each other like our life depended on it. I slip the ring on as our family cheers for us and gives us all hugs. I see Blake reach into his pocket and pull out a velvet box.
"I was gonna ask you later this week, but Evan Buckley-Herrmann, will you marry me?"
I nod and we kiss again. We put our rings on and keep celebrating Christmas with our family.
We also bought the rubber rings for at work. We aren't telling anyone right out, we are gonna see who figures it out first. I bet on Shay, Blake says Matt, dad says Sylvie, mom and Maddie say Otis, and Chim who has gotten to know 51, says Stella. In the end, mom and Maddie were right. He noticed our rings and congratulated us prompting everyone else to do the same. The girls offered to plan it with Maddie. I ask Maddie to be my best woman and Blake asks Ritter to be his best man. We asked Boden to officiate it. My dad will walk me down the aisle. We each took turns deciding who we wanted for our groomsmen/women. We ended up doing a fall wedding because that is our favorite season and we had many people from intelligence, med, and firehouse 51 and a few people from California. Our first dance is the song we sang together on our first date. About a year into our marriage Blake and I decided to adopt twins. We now have two girls named Maeve Gallo and Robin Gallo who are 4. They love all the aunts and uncles they have from everywhere in Chicago and LA. They also love their "Papa Herrmann and Grammy Cindy. But also their grandpa Boden". Everyday I am thankful that I decided to leave LA and I'm thankful that the Herrmanns adopted me because if they didn't I don't know where I would be. But I thank God the Buckleys didn't want me and that captain Nash shut me out.
And we'll build this love from the ground up
Now 'til forever it's all of me, all of you
Just take my hand
And I'll be the man your dad hoped that I'd be
And we'll build this love from the ground up
For worse or for better
And I will be all you need
Beside you I'll stand through the good and the bad
We'll give all that we have
And we'll build this love from the ground up
