someone might've said this before but I didn't see it so I'm just gonna go ahead and say it "again". Cassandra Clare is a pussy for refusing to write gay nsfw scenes given that she was perfectly fine writing straight nsfw scenes. Isabelle and Simon make out for pages at a time, Clary and Jace had sex, Julian and Emma had sex like three times, Tess and Will had sex, but she refuses to write Magnus and Alec or Kieran and Mark kissing for longer than .5 seconds. like its so odd to me. the dark artifices in particular had so much nsfw shit its nearly gratuitous, but only with the straight couples? I guess the only argument against this would be that one short story where Malec got pretty close to having sex but Magnus stopped it before they got there (forgive me for not remembering the name of the short story or what book it was from its been a really long time since I last read through all the main series). Am I crazy? I seriously can't be the only one who noticed

surviving and living, a thin line

summary: Surviving is all Jace needs. All anyone ever said he needs. But life creeps in, who is he to stop it?

Surviving. It’s what Shadowhunters do, what they learn to do as children and are expected to do until they don’t. Survive, survive, survive. 

But nobody ever says anything about living. Or Jace just didn’t hear anything if they did. So he learns his runes, his weapons, the languages, the democracy, the strategy. Survive, survive, survive. That’s all he ever hears. 

Life was an afterthought, something he didn’t really need. What needed was to survive, and one doesn’t need to live to survive. So he didn’t. He survived in broken bones, bleeding knuckles, chipped teeth, healing runes. Survive, survive, survive. That’s all he ever does. 

Nightmares wake him up stifling screams, dry heaving, heart pounding, fingernails digging in. He dealt with it, living off caffeine and desperation at the age of ten. Maryse and Robert never wonder who’s drinking the cups missing from the pot. Getting better is living, and that’s not what Jace has to do, and Jace only has to survive. Survive, survive, survive.

He becomes parabatai with Alec, the rune heavy on the inside of his wrist. It’s about survival. A parabatai is a promise of safety in the field, it’s a vow of your back being watched and an extension of yourself in another. It’s survival. It’s a battle. It’s war. Survive, survive, survive.

Max is there, following Jace. He wants to learn, but not to survive. Because he wants to live. Jace doesn’t understand, yet finds himself teaching Max anyway, giving Max the toy soldier, the only thing left from his father. It’s about survival, he tells himself, when Max is old he will be another watching my back. Survive, survive, survive. That’s what he tells himself.

Izzy teaches him how to dress, how to do makeup, how to dye hair. He tells himself it’s survival, if he needs to hide he can, change his appearance in a moment. But Izzy laughs and maybe he smiles, and maybe it’s for real. No, it’s gaining her trust. It’s survival, another pair of eyes who are trained on his back. Survive, survive, survive.

Clary and Simon come along. Clary’s angry, Simon’s a wonder. They’re both laughing and neither of them are of any use to him. But then Clary can make runes and she brings Simon along. It’s about survival, not the growth in his heart when Clary smiles or Simon laughs. Survive, survive, survive.

His father’s alive, really alive and really not Michael Wayland. Valentine. Valentine Morgenstern, Jace Morgenstern, Clary Morgenstern. One survives, two live. Jace tries to escape, tries to kill Valentine. It’s about survival, he tells himself. With Valentine alive, he’ll never survive. But the bile rising in his throat when the man smiles isn’t about survival. He swallows it down. Survive, survive, survive. That’s all this is about. 

There’s something odd about Simon. In the way he smiles, laughs, talks, moves, dances, sings, yells, screams, cries. In the way he wakes up screaming, crying, checking for a pulse he can’t feel. There’s a fire behind all of it, a fire that’s not just survival. It’s living. Survive, survive, survive. That’s what Jace wants to do, right?

Magnus drags him out of the gym, a quick healing spell on the knuckles he has never wrapped. There’s not mention of Alec, who always tries to get Jace out. He gets Jace a new wardrobe, makeup of his own, a dye job so good it looks real. The pink looks odd, leaving a flutter in Jace’s heart, tears stuck in his throat, a hug on his arms, dancing in his fingers. He doesn’t. That’s not survival, so Jace pushes it down but he knows Magnus saw that smile. Survive, survive, survive. Is that all he’s doing?

Maia and Simon drag him to Simon’s apartment, putting on a movie they call a slasher, telling him he hasn’t seen a movie until he’s watched a two star horror movie. They laugh and talk the whole time. Jace lets a small laugh out, and maybe his fingers dance a bit. Maia and Simon don’t just survive, not like him. Survive, survive, survive. Maybe he wants more.

Alec and Izzy are there at his next nightmare, where he let himself scream when he woke. They hold him, rub where his fingernails dug in, putting on Batman band-aids Clary bought for Max. He cries into Alec’s shoulder, holds Izzy’s hand, doesn’t talk about the things he saw, and they don’t need him to. Max joins, silent as he joins in, tapping out I-T-S O-K-A-Y in the morse code Jace taught him. This isn’t survival, but Jace does it anyway. And maybe he does it over and over again. Survive, survive, live.

He sits down with Simon, teaching him piano with all the gentle touch and words he didn’t get. Simon messes up, Jace puts his fingers on the right keys, the ache of a snap fading in his own. Simon sees the tears gathering on his brass eyelashes, he waits, cries along with Jace when he talks about what happened in that Manor for the first time. Survive, survive, live.

Game night at Magnus’. The first one Jace goes to. They welcome him with cheers and smiles, act like he’s always come. No touches are given, and maybe for the first time in a long time he would accept them without a flinch first. When Raphael wins Monopoly, he gives Jace a smile and there’s that flutter in his heart that means not-just-survival. Survive, live, live.

Alec, Izzy, and Max listen as Jace talks. Voice cracking, tears falling, fingernails kept from digger by Lightwood hands, body aching with bruises long gone. They apologize for things done by a man so hardly a man. They promise safety. They say wipe away tears and hold him once they make sure it’s allowed. Survive, live, live.

Tessa and Jem tell him stories about Will, hearts aching with bittersweet love lost. Jace feels family grow. Aunt Tess, Uncle Jem. Not blood, but water is better anyway. To hell with the thick red running in his veins, Aunt Tess, Uncle Jem, little Mina, cousin Kit, whose more brother than cousin. Only Kit is blood, but no better than any of the rest. Survive, live, live.

Simon and Maia laugh over a Player’s Handbook he doesn’t really understand. Green dice, numbered in gold are rolled. A sheet of paper is filled, and they help him all the way through creating a character. They teach him the rules, show him what to do. He feels warmth grow up from his stomach when they listen to him talk about the weapons in their game, explain how they work, where they’re from. When his fingers dance, Simon and Maia smiles and Jace realizes his finger dance is Simon’s rock, Maia’s hand flap. Survive, live, live. 

Alec, Izzy, and Max laugh with Jace over too much food ordered at Taki’s. Jace smiles, laughs, talks, fingers dancing when they listen to him talk about Shakespeare. He explains the tragedy of Hamlet, and the jokes they speak are never about him. Max sees his fingers dance and tells Jace how he likes to bounce. Alec and Izzy smiles and know, never mock or try to stop. This isn’t survival, and it’s better than just that. Live, live, live.

Maia and Simon ask him to a movie at Simon’s apartment. Food is tossed into mouths, Jace’s fingers dance, Simon rocks on the balls of his feet, Maia’s hands flap. Maia lays her head on Simon’s lap, asks to put her feet in Jace’s. A yes is said, and he means it. Hesitation when kisses are asked next, they don’t. Simon and Maia don’t ask again. The next week another movie, Simon curled against Maia, hand entwined with Jace. Kisses are asked for, and this time Jace knows he wants it. They make sure, he is. Live, live, live. 

Magnus takes him shopping again, Aunt Tess and Uncle Jem come to. Jem tells him about violin, offers Jace lessons when interest is shown. Magnus knows a place, just like he always does. Aunt Tess shows him her favorite books, Jace shows her his. Magnus buys them, shaking off offers to pay him back with laughs and it’s no problem. Live, live, live. 

Shadowhunters are taught to survive, nobody talks about living. But Jace won’t just survive anymore. He’ll live. He’ll heal, even if the nightmares don’t go away, even if unwelcome touch still causes a flinch. Live, live, live. A lesson he had to learn, but a welcome one. 

Live, live, live. What is survival without the life behind it? Live, live, live. That is what Jace will do.

This is really angsty but I’m kinda proud of it ngl. Its set in the short story Through Blood, Through Fire from Ghosts of the Shadow Market. And then she is Tessa again, at Will’s side, and Jem is there, and Will is slipping away, and she is trying to fathom how she will face a world without him.

“Please, love” Jem says,” stay with me,”

Tessa sees Will and Jem, and Jem and Will, over and over, aging, grey hair and wrinkled faces. She sees herself with them, forever young, 20 to their 40, 50, 60. She sees Will dying and Jem and Tessa are convincing him to hold on, minute by minute, and she can’t take this pain anymore.

“Jem, Wǒ zài zhèlǐ!” Because he was always there when they needed him most. There could only be one Him with them. It was Will.

“Please, help her. Maybe- together we can-“ Jem didn’t know exactly what he was saying, all he knew was that Will was here, or at least as here as he could ever be.

And so, Tessa heard two voices.

Stay, you have so much left to live for, I love you, please.

Stay, for Jem, and for me. One day you both will join me, and we will rejoice, but now is not the time.

Two hands held hers, as it should have been, as it would have been if things had gone right.

If she concentrated, she could pretend one hand wasn’t cold and almost-not-there.

Jem and Will could both see it. The Change was consuming her, and it wouldn’t stop. But they refused to acknowledge it.

“Wǒ de xīn, don’t go.” Jem spoke calmly, as he always did, because he needed to stay cool and collected when everything around him was falling apart, but inside he was screaming.

But Will had a knowing glint in his eyes. He knew Jem’s heart inside and out, as he should, because he would always have a special place there. Along with their Tessa.

But it hurt too much, oh, it hurt, and Tessa didn’t think she could survive the pain of reality any longer, so she lost herself in Rosemary’s life, and her dreams.

Tessa did the one thing she had been afraid of happening. She let the Change consume her.

Today, after spending the whole morning and afternoon writing about birds and their symbolism, I could finally write about something that wasn’t uni-related, and that’s how this one shot came to exist. “Tess?”

Will’s voice echoed in the empty library, as Tessa was looking for books they could use to find information on some demons that had recently appeared in London.

She loved the library, it was probably the place she liked the most at the Institute – well, that and of course, the drawing room, that had turned into their drawing room a couple of years ago.

Tessa also loved how, even after more than twenty years, she felt delighted hearing his voice. He had such a lively voice, which she rarely found lifeless. Even when his parents had died a few years before and he had been broken for a while, he had tried to show he was okay, not letting her and their son and daughter realize that he was hurting inside.

But she knew. She knew how the light had left his usually vivid and energetic behavior, and she tried to help him lessen the pain. Death was part of life and at least he had his family and Jem to look after him, despite this one couldn’t visit them all the time.

Tessa grabbed a book, suddenly attracted by the dark blue cover. Treaty on forest creatures, the spine said. She frowned and shook her head. No, definitely not the right book.

She was near one of the shelves in the far corner of the room. She didn’t know why she had decided to look here since this wasn’t the part of the library with books that could interest her, but maybe, just maybe, there was a bit of intention as to the choice of her direction.

She wanted to be found.

She kept looking at the stacks of books and occasionally looked at her sides with the corner of her eye, while she told herself she shouldn’t do it. It would be more fun if she didn’t know…

The air was knocked out of her for a brief moment when she felt him behind her.

She could smell his cologne, because he was closer as ever. She liked it. She liked how his scent mixed with hers while they were in bed, soaked, stuck together like leaves, as their labored breaths gave rise to a symphony of pleasure and words of love and promise. “You have no idea how much I love you,” he often told her. She would never get tired of him professing his feelings over and over again, as she couldn’t stop her heart from melting whenever she would say it back.

For weird reasons, before they got married, he feared he would be her second choice, since Jem had become a Silent Brother. After all these years he never doubted his worth again. Tessa knew that he was sure she loved him as much as he did, but every time she repeated those words, his eyes would shine like a child on Christmas day all the same. It made her feel ecstatic and imbued with pure joy, the way that her husband reacted to things small like that, because she knew that they meant the world to him. That she meant the world to him.

Will circled her waist with his hands, and inhaled her scent. His nose was closer to her ear, and she felt his breath on her neck. It made her shiver. It didn’t help that he also kissed her there.

“There you are, fy nghariad” he whispered. “I was thinking someone had kidnapped you.”

Tessa shivered all over and smirked, even if he couldn’t see her expression. “Maybe I just did it on purpose.”

He laughed, and his laugh was mischievous. His left hand caressed her cheek for a moment, slow and steady, until he placed it on her collarbone, drawing circles on her exposed skin over there. “How cunning” he commented. “And which purpose did you have, Mrs. Herondale?”

She grabbed his right hand and drove it across her shoulder blades until it touched her left shoulder. “My back hurts so very much today, Will. Would you mind?” she asked seductively, moving her neck a bit, as if she couldn’t keep her head on it, if she tried.

“Anything for you, my wife” he replied, then proceeded to move his hands on her neck, right where her hairline was. She had her hair up that day, which meant her neck was exposed. His fingers trailed on the back of her shoulders and started massaging her there, until Tessa couldn’t hold her sighs in anymore. “Do you like it?”

Tessa closed her eyes and a moan escaped her lips. In the beginning she was embarrassed to make those sounds whenever they touched each other, but then she decided it wasn’t nothing to be ashamed of. As she learned with time, those sounds were just a way to depict pleasure.

“Y-yes” she murmured.

Behind her, Will smirked and his hands worked on the nerves on her back until they were on her hips again. Then, in a swift motion, he turned her body so that she would face him. Her cheeks were flushed, and she was excited, he could see it in her bright eyes. They were closer to a window, and the light of the afternoon made her shine as if she was a goddess. She indeed was his goddess.

Tessa didn’t have the time breathe because her husband crushed his lips on hers. The book she had in one hand fell to the floor, as she wrapped her arms around his neck and grabbed a fist of his hair. The kiss wasn’t slow, it was raw, passionate, needy. Every time they kissed it was different, because not every kiss was the same. At times they took their time and savored each other’s lips, while other times he lightened up light a wild torch burning, and Tessa would feel as if they were on fire and the world would explode any minute because of their body heat.

Will took a moment to take his vest off and threw it on the floor unceremoniously, then his lips went on hers once again, and seemed wilder than before.

She let herself be kissed and kissed him back with the same fierceness, but then she stopped abruptly. She was out of breath.

“Is there something wrong?” Will asked, worry in his eyes. “Did I hurt you, cariad?” he caressed her cheek with affection, noticing her plump lips.

Tessa put her hands on his cheeks as well, then moved them on his shoulders. “No, Will, you didn’t hurt me,” she reassured him with a smile. Lately he was being a bit preoccupied because of the recent events, and she hated to see him so pained, but it was in his nature to be protective of the ones he loved. “But don’t you think someone could come?”

He raised an eyebrow. “You never worried about this in the past. And, after all, isn’t this Institute technically our home?”

She felt her cheeks heat and looked away. “Yes, yes, that’s true,” she conceded. “But there are other people in the building besides us. What if they have the same idea and come to look for something on the books we have in the library?”

He stroked her chin softly, and gave her one of his sweetest smiles. “I don’t think they’d do it but that’s okay, Tess. We can continue later if you want, but I need to kiss you one last time or I’ll go crazy.” He said, his eyes almost begging her for that at least.

It wasn’t like they hadn’t made out or done worse in the library when their son and daughter were out of the Institute, but still, they had been alone at that time. She wouldn’t rule out the possibility of doing something like role play in there, but probably another time.

Tessa nodded and grabbed the lapels of his white shirt and met his lips hungrily. She was losing herself in that kiss when she heard footsteps and stopped abruptly, kneading Will in his nether regions in the process.

“Ouch!” he cried, and put his forehead on her shoulder. Then he glanced at her, seeing Tessa’s cheeks beet red. She wasn’t looking at him. Her eyes were on something behind them, so he did turn to see what had startled her.

Dark green eyes started back at them with amusement and the hint of a smirk. “Uhm, well, what do you say in these occasions?”

Tessa touched her forehead for a moment, mortified, while Will grinned as if this didn’t embarrass him at all. “It all depends on how much you’ve witnessed, Matthew.”

Matthew Fairchild was stunned, but not surprised by Will’s answer. Truthfully, Will was James’ father but he had the soul of a guy his age. He wasn’t ashamed at all that his son’s parabatai had basically witnessed him and his wife devour each other as if they couldn’t breathe if they didn’t put their hands on each other every few hours.

He was about to say something sarcastic like that he had seen enough tongue and the way James’ father was fondling Tessa’s chest and the way Tessa herself was grabbing her husband’s rear end and feeling the tight muscles in her small hand. But he didn’t. Tessa was still sort of hiding behind Will and it looked as if she wished to disappear. Why did he come there? He totally forgot.

“I’ve only seen you when your wife kicked you… where she kicked you” Matthew replied, trying to give them his best smile and trying not to look at the vest on the floor and Tessa’s hair in disarray.

Tessa seemed to remember what she did a few moments before, and looked at her husband. “That’s right! Are you okay, Will?” she wondered, looking down for an instant. Then, remembering Matthew was there, she glanced away shyly.

He thought James’ mother was a darling, but then, realizing he had just thought about Tessa that way, he excused himself and left them alone. “I’ll leave you to tend to your husband, then.”

Will and Tessa looked at each other and started laughing, then she sighed. “I’m sorry I kicked you.”

“I’m not,” Will said, one eyebrow raised.

Tessa slapped his shoulder and rolled her eyes. “You’re incorrigible.”

“But that’s why you love me, right?”

“That’s why I love you, yes. Now let’s look at these books and then we can play,” she told him, smirking.

“You always know how to excite me, Tess.”

She opened her mouth. He was so close that his… “Don’t worry, I won’t forget to tend to you, bach.”

“You’re going to dress up as a nurse?”

She rolled her eyes and grinned. “If it makes you feel better…”

“You should know by now that anything you do, especially with your hands, works like magic.”

Tessa blushed and stared at him. She had wanted to look for clues in the library because she thought book would help, but in the end, she was the one who couldn’t help herself when Will was concerned. She closed the distance between them and kissed him one last time. Or what she thought would be the last time.

Oh, she was really fond of libraries.

Hi!

So I made this blog a couple of weeks ago and still haven’t made a proper introduction of myself in this community, so here we go!

My name is Ash (at least, it’s my nickname online, but my full name isn’t Ashley), I’m 20 and currently in my third year of uni. I’m an English major with a concentration in Creative Writing, and a Film minor, and I will be able to graduate early (hell yes, less money to owe! *she says as she’s already drowning in debt*) I’m working towards one day becoming a published author, and will possible be an editor in a publishing house first (peeps need to contact me back UGH)

I got into TSC when I was in 10th grade--the movie was being made and I read through all the first 5 TMI books like three times, waiting for CoHF to drop, and guys let me tell you, once it did, I read all the way through to the dreams in Edom and then for some God damn reason stopped and didn’t read any more until next year. idk why (I totally know why--i hate when things end) BUT then I realised TID series was finishing up, so I read all of those, then went back to finish cohf lmao

then, things were pretty quiet for me with these books. I wasn’t apart of the fandom (my main tumblr is a 1d blog, so if you see stylesmyth liking your post, but chocolateforemma reblogging, that’s me lmao) and I had no clue tda was being written. But summer of 2018 came around, I was bored as shit and decided to reread the first two series for like the twentieth time, and THEN found out about TDA and fuck man, that wait for Queen was brutal

my relationship with these books is so weird. I have plenty of books on my shelves that I’ve never even opened to read (maybe one day *insert “and then I didn’t” gif*) but I find myself drawn to keep reading and rereading these books, and never get tired of it (I finished rsom the other day and also finished my reread of shadowhunter academy, so I’ll likely start a reread of tmi as soon as a 10pg paper about Hamlet if off my shoulders)

now, how about some stats (not really stats, but just favourite, least favourites of stuff) fav book? literally can’t decide, next question least fav? City of Fallen Angels, fight me fav series? i could sit here all day and go back and forth between them movie or tv show? MOVIE WHAT KIND OF QUESTION IS THAT (side note: in January, I decided I would try to watch the show, but i kid you not, the first minute of it pissed me off so fucking much, and WHY THE FUCK WOULD JOCELYN GIVE CLARY A STELE UGH, obvs i have very passionate thoughts about the first ten mins of the pilot episode so movie) ((another note: I WILL FOREVER BE PISSED THE MOVIES DIDN’T CONTINUE)) fav ships: listen. I know everyone here loves malec and kitty and yes I do love them too, but because of the way I connect with books, I typically go for the ships that are presented immediately and latch onto them more: Clace, Wessa and Jemma (I do like Jem and Tessa, but fuck I love Will) ((and I’m sure I’ll latch onto Kitty when twp comes out and when...they’re a better age to appropriately ship))

(I think y’all call them fancast) but I see all the tmi characters as those cast in the movie (lily, Jamie, etc), for TID Astrid Berges-Frisbey as Tess and Douglas Booth as Will, and TDA i think I’ve settled for Lorenzo Zurzolo for Julian but God I’ve been having the toughest time finding someone I like for Emma (so if you have thoughts, I would love to hear your fc for her)

last thing, I’ve been graphic designing for six (seven?) years, so you’ll probs be seeing more from me in the future (i would love to get into drawing the characters but school ugh no time) but for now you can check out my Enneagram Series and request a character you’d like me to do next!!!

Magnus Bane’s life was lavish and carefree…until he adopted (Y/N). It's not that he didn’t love them, he does with his whole heart, but adopting a young warlock who doesn’t understand the shadow world and went through a traumatic past is hard. He had adopted (Y/N) almost a year ago so to celebrate they were having a small party. Ever since (Y/N) was adopted they always called Magnus, Magnus. They actually used to call him Mr Bane but that didn’t stick. Magnus didn’t mind being called that, in fact, he hardly thought about it. He didn’t want to pressure (Y/N) into calling him ‘Dad’ or ‘Daddy’. At first, he actually dreaded the idea of (Y/N) calling him Daddy. Some downworlders who knew Magnus when he first adopted (Y/N) would joke and mock him by calling him, Daddy. He didn’t like the idea of being called Daddy because of these jokes. He thought he would have all respect taken from him in the eyes of clients and downworlders alike. Magnus had gotten (Y/N) to have a sleepover with auntie Tessa so he could set up the party. When he woke he got straight to work knowing they’d be back at noon. Magnus thought back to the first night (Y/N) spent in his flat. They were scared understandable and to calm your nerves he put on some movies. Who doesn’t like movies? It was his first happy memory with (Y/N) and kind of a tradition to have a movie marathon once a week. Because of this memory, Magnus knew how to decorate the party. He set up the living room to look like an award ceremony and the entrance to a theatre which was actually a guest room he had set up. There was a red rug going from the door to a part of the wall he had decorated with velvet curtains and a black background where you would take pictures as if you were attending an award ceremony. The main part of the living room was left kind of the same but not. He had moved the couches back a bit to allow for a bit more space and hate hung some fairy lights and some black and gold stars. There was already a disco ball for a light, (A/N:I mean it is Magnus’s flat) so that was no issue. The closer you got to the guest room where the movie was set up there was a popcorn machine and refreshment tables. The tables had red and white striped tablecloths on them. The refreshments consisted of 4 types of popcorn (Sweet, Salty, Plain and Chocolate) and normal movie food like sweets and hotdogs. He had also gotten a bartender to serve drinks at the bar which he had also decorated in red and white strips.

Once inside the guest room you would see what he hoped to be (Y/N)’s favourite part. The movie. There was a queen bed that he had put black and gold sheets on. On the wall across from the bed was the TV. He had spread some bean bags, blankets and pillows around the room for the rest of the guests who didn’t get into the VIP section aka the bed. He had hung blackout curtains in front of the windows and the room had a dimmer switch. The TV was set up so (Y/N) could play their favourite movies.

Magnus had invited a decent amount of guests. Since there was not many downworlders around (Y/N)’s age most were older which honestly didn’t matter as they all loved (Y/N). Some of the guest’s included: Raphael (who surprisingly is really good with kids), Tessa, Jem, Maia (Your babysitter during the day because of Raph’s vampirism), his boyfriend Alec, Jace, Clary, Izzy and some other downworlders he knew and kind of you. When he was making up the guest list he realised something; most of (Y/N)’s company is a lot older. It made sense in a way. Not many children were turned to vamps or werewolves and warlocks were less common than ever before. Sure there were young shadowhunters but they didn’t want to associate with downworlders. It was part of the reason Alec had suggested bring Max because they were close in age as he was 11 and (Y/N) was 8. Magnus didn’t have time to think of that though as guests started arriving. By half 11 nearly everyone was there. “Wow Mags. This is amazing.” Alec complemented when he saw his warlock boyfriend. They had only been going out for a couple months but Magnus appearance still took his breath away. He had told everyone the theme and to ‘dress appropriately’. He was in black slacks, a black glittery shirt, a red bow tie and of course gold accessories and his signature spiky sparkly hair with red highlights.  Most people did fit the dress code in Magnus’s opinion. Most of the girls wore dresses and skirts while some, like Maia, opted for a nice top and skinny jeans. You could tell who would be up for what awards if it was real. In Magnus’s opinion, Alec would be the front-runner for best dressed in his blue shirt and black slacks that looked perfect on him and that Izzy had clearly picked as there were no holes in his shirt. Izzy would be up for most dangerous in her tight black glitter dress. Raphael would be up for best suit in his velvet red suit jacket, black trousers and shirt. It was quite amusing to him as the party favours were awards and he thought they matched well. The bartender was behind the bar and Magnus was pretty sure everyone was there apart from (Y/N), Tessa and Jem but that was intentional. Tessa texted Magnus saying they were coming up the stairs so Magnus told everyone to hide. The lights were off and everyone was in position when (Y/N) opened the door. “Surprise!” “Oh my goodness! This is awesome!” (Y/N) squealed. “Glad you like it,” (Y/N) turned to Magnus. “I figured we should celebrate a full year of having you here.” “Magnus,” (Y/N) said with a pointed look. “you just wanted to have another party, didn’t you?” Magnus sent a wink their way and (Y/N) broke into a smile. “Well, I’m glad you did.” After a quick glance around the room (Y/N) noticed something. “I'm not dressed right.” They whined which earned a chuckle. “And neither are auntie Tess and uncle Jem.” “Definitely Magnus’s kid,” Jace whispered to Alec while laughing. “Don’t worry about us,” Jem started. “we brought our clothes in aunt Tess’s bag.” “What about me?” (Y/N) turned to their aunt. “It's your house, isn’t it? Go find something.” Tessa prompted which sent (Y/N) running to their room. People laughed and said how Magnus had rubbed off on the child. Tessa and Jem went to get changed in the bathroom while Magnus finally opened the bar.

The party went down well with all the guest and most importantly (Y/N). Max and (Y/N) got on surprisingly well and were running around the apartment after they got their hands on some cake.

After about an hour and a half in the living room, they went into the guest room which was definitely (Y/N)’s favourite part. Magnus got (Y/N) to go in first to see and they loved it. (Y/N) got to pick who went on the bed which ended up being themselves, Max, Magnus, Jem and Tessa. (Y/N) took a few minutes to decide though. Everyone else claimed a bean bag or spot on the floor with pillows and blankets. Magnus sat on the bed with his back against the headboard and legs stretched out under the covers on one half of the bed. Tessa and Jem sat next to each other on the other half and Max lay on his stomach with his legs going in between Tessa and Magnus, which was sort of a halfway line of the bed, while (Y/N) picked the movie and pressed play. Once the movie began (Y/N) carefully walked from one side of the room to the bed, making sure not to crush anyone or their snacks. Once they got to the side of the bed were Magnus sat they pulled back the covers and climbed in. (Y/N) put Magnus’s arm around their shoulder and snuggled into him. Magnus grinned down at the site of his child nuzzling into him. He gave (Y/N) a squeeze with his arm and they smiled up at him. “Thanks, daddy. This is the best party ever.” (Y/N) said kind of quietly although close by guest’s heard and smiled at their adorableness. Magnus’s heart melted when (Y/N) said that. Never before had he been called dad or daddy. He never thought he’d want to be called that but hearing (Y/N) say it as if it was the most natural thing in the world was amazing. “It's not problem sweetpea.” “Can we do this every year?” “Whatever you want.” Magnus smiled down at his child while they turned their attention back to the movie. After the movie (Y/N) got up to change it and when they got back sat on Magnus’s lap which he was more than happy to allow. He wrapped his arms around them, hugging them while they leaned back into his chest. Some people left after the first movie so they went from 15 to 10. It was mainly Magnus’s friends aka (Y/N) aunts and uncles. After the second movie ended a third was put on and this time they lost even more people. Raphael, Lillian (a vamp (Y/N) befriended while at the Dumort {Also the one from the books if you’ve read them}), Maia, Clary and Jace. Raphael and Lillian had gotten Magnus to make a portal to get there and back home because of the sun. Maia had to go and study and Clary and Jace had dinner reservations. When (Y/N) put on the next movie they sat on the bean bags near the front and Max joined them. At some point during the third movie, Max and (Y/N) fell asleep. No one noticed until after the movie finished. Izzy decided to take Max back to the institute since Alec was going to sleep over. Magnus offered to make a portal for her and Max then one for Tessa and Jem. They accepted and by half 9 everyone was gone. It was a good day although some people had been there for 9 hours. (Y/N) was carried to bed by Magnus who hadn’t stopped smiling since (Y/N) called him daddy. They had called him dad during the movies sometimes and he loved it. Alec noticed so when Magnus got into the living room after putting (Y/N) to bed he brought it up. “So, is (Y/N) going to call you dad from now on?” “Alexander you needn’t clean this mess,” Magnus snapped his fingers and cleaned the food away but left most of the décor up. “and I hope so. I'm actually kind of hoping for daddy. It just makes my heart melt.” Alec nodded and stayed silent for a moment but he couldn’t hold back. He’d known Jace too long. “So is (Y/N) the only one who can call you daddy?” “Oh shut up!” Magnus made a pillow fly into Alec’s face which he swatted away with a mischevious grin. “Just asking.” Magnus sighed. “I never thought I would have this. I would have a child who I loved and a man I truly love. It's more magical than I thought possible.” The pair didn’t even hear the footsteps of (Y/N) as they walked sleepily down the hallway. “Why are you two still up?” (Y/N) rubbed their eyes. “We were just talking darling. Go back to bed.” Magnus stoked (Y/N)’s hair while he said it. “Ok,”  they muttered sleepily and began to go back down the hallway. Alec walked over to Magnus and hugged him from behind. “Night daddy,” (Y/N) said when they were just in earshot. “Night other daddy.” Alec froze and Magnus held back a laugh as (Y/N) continued down the hall to their room. “Don’t even Magnus,” Alec warned. “Daddy,” Magnus whispered before bursting out laughing. “Be quiet. (Y/N)'s going to bed!” Alec warned even though his cheeks were red. “I can't wait till I tell Jace,” Magnus said while sitting on the couch. Alec groaned then sighed gently. “At least they like me I guess.” He mumbled with a slight smile. “It's not too bad to be called other daddy. Well, when it's from (Y/N).” Magnus hummed in agreement. It melted his heart, he had his perfect family and he now considered himself a proper ‘dad’.

When husband and wife duo Phoebe Bell and Chris Monahan of Sage and Clare were living in Warrandyte last year, they drove past an ‘open for inspection sign’ and (like many of us) popped in for a ‘sticky beak.’ This impromptu visit resulted in a new home (!) – as Phoebe explains, ‘it felt immediately perfect so we went for it!’

Since moving in, Phoebe and Chris, along with housemates Jemma (Phoebe’s sister) and her husband Paul, have ripped up the dated carpet and introduced warm oak flooring downstairs. The splash back in the kitchen was also replaced, along with new modern lighting.

While the family team only undertook minor renovations, the home is brought to life by the colourful textiles and homewares scattered throughout the home – many of course, from Phoebe’s business, Sage and Clare. The duo also applied their keen eye for colour by updating many of the internal walls with Dulux wall colours (hello to that ‘Robin Hood’ green wall and chocolate velvet couch combo!) and plenty of soft furnishings flourishes. Phoebe explains ‘we’ve kept the palette of the home fairly neutral and earthy, so we can experiment with colour across our textiles and art.’

Favourite objects in the home include the De Sede 76 leather sofa, and Phoebe’s latest art purchased by Kayi Kayi Nampitjinpa. She describes her general aesthetic as ‘homely, eclectic, colourful and full of vintage finds we have picked up from our travels.’ A love of mid-century design is also evident, and Phoebe highlights that this ‘theme runs throughout the home.’

For this family and business team, home is a ‘retreat in every sense of the word.’ The Warrandyte location offers easy accessibility to Melbourne, but ‘we get to live surrounded by trees as if we are in the middle of nowhere.’ Phoebe enthuses, ‘arriving home to this sanctuary after the busy-ness of our days is magical.’ We can imagine!

In the week leading up to the 2017 Will Eisner Awards voting deadline this Friday, the Comics Beat will feature a series of “For Your Consideration” posts highlighting a number of the nominees as a celebration of their well-deserved acknowledgement. We’ll feature some never-before-seen behind the scenes content and some of the books’ gorgeous interiors. We encourage all of our readers to check these titles out and all of the eligible comics industry members to vote for the titles they think best exemplify what make comics great.

In a year when themes of identity and queerness took center stage in the comics world, Best Limited Series nominee KIM & KIM,  by Mags Vissagio, Ever Cabrera and Claudia Aguirre was exhibit A for representation. Kim Q and Kim D are two intergalactic bounty hunters, They are also two broke girls who just want to have fun, while their lack of money makes this a problem. Fill in your “x meets y” description here – Jem & The Holograms meets Blade Runner or Two Broke Girls in Space. That Kim Q is trans and Kim D is bi doesn’t make this a political treatise – just a meaningful background for two people we come to care about.

Writer Visaggio has created two endearing characters and artist Cabrera brings their wacky world to life. Along the way there are moments of self doubt that we can all relate to mixed with action, jokes, double crosses and the usual stuff that makes a comic book FUN. Not only is KIM & KIM another groundbreaking book from the highly underrated Black Mask, it’s a reminder that what comics do best is make us laugh, make us think and make us enjoy a good yarn – all at the same time.
