Let's explore the possibilities of Musk creating a competition to iPhone and Apple creating a product to compete directly against Twitter. 

First: I have no doubt that Musk can build a phone - let’s call it a Tesla Phone for now  - that competes in the luxury phone space. He could tie it to Starlink, include Twitter on it even if Apple and Google ban the Twitter app from their stores, and so on. It would have an instant customer base. 

If I were him, I would focus on the hardware, and stick to an Android OS base. This is for two reasons: first, it’s just cheaper to use Android OS than to hire enough CS grads to roll his own, and second, the Tesla Phone would benefit from the universe of Android apps already available. (While he COULD roll a custom OS for the Tesla Phone, it’s not going to be easy to convince hundreds of thousands of app creators to go through the pain of building a THIRD version of their app just for the Tesla Phone. Building for iPhone and Android is enough pain.)

So let’s suppose Apple responds by building its own Twitter. They can certainly hire the talent to do it, and with Apple’s engineering, it would be up and running in eighteen months and functioning like clockwork. However the downside is that it would almost certainly be tied to Apple’s ID management system, and that will limit its customer base.

A better move would be to partner with other big tech firms - Alphabet, Microsoft, Dell, Samsung, etc - to fund a not-for-profit Twitter alternative. They can do this through the Linux Foundation, the Mozilla Foundation, the Wikimedia Foundation, or by rolling their own. The sponsors get to set the rules that keep them compliant with all the usual regulations and safe from lawsuits. With proper management it could become itself as indispensable as Linux or Wikipedia, and a true replacement for Twitter.

It's a weird sort of defeatism I see whenever there's a story about a country in the global south discovering large reserves of some critical mineral or resource where people automatically go "oh no that's terrible for them" as if the "resource curse" is something that just passively happens instead of the results of active decisions by Imperialist Monopolistic Capital

Discovery of a resource to be exploited should - and moreover *can* - be a beacon of hope for increasing domestic manufacturing & moving local industry higher up the value chain & building qualitatively higher productive capacity without the need to service foreign speculative Capital.
