De komst van fotografie op de markt in de jaren 1840 zorgde voor een revolutie in verslaggeving, en tegelijkertijd een existentiële crisis voor de schilder die zich gepasseerd voelde. Collage gaf de mogelijkheid te werken met andere materialen dan slechts papier, en fracties van het echte leven toe te voegen aan kunstwerken. Maar misschien is er wel niets zo revolutionair voor de kunst geweest als de uitvinding van olieverf. Een uitvinding die lang is toegeschreven aan Jan van Eyck, die ongeëvenaard was in zijn kunde.
Het echtpaar Arnolfini portretteerde Van Eyck rond 1434, en is zijn meest bekende werk. Het schilderij toont de spectaculaire wijze waarop Van Eyck olieverf gebruikte. De stoffen, zijde, katoen, wol en bont, lenen zich hier goed voor de intensere kleuren die olieverf oplevert, de gelaagdheid die diepte creëert maar ook de fijne texturen die ermee op worden gemaakt. Bijzonder aan dit schilderij is ook de hoeveelheid details die Van Eyck erin weet te verwerken, met de spiegel achter het echtpaar als beste voorbeeld.
Praktisch onmogelijk voor het blote oog om te zien, maar gelukkig goed digitaal gedocumenteerd, is de spiegel waarin Van Eyck zichtbaar vier figuren heeft geschilderd. Twee figuren zijn herkenbaar als het echtpaar Arnolfini, maar centraal achterin zijn nog twee figuren, respectievelijk in rood en blauw gekleed. De figuur in blauw draagt iets in zijn linkerhand, en kunsthistorici zijn het al eeuwen eens over het feit dat dit niet anders dan een palet kan zijn. Deze bijzonder gedetailleerde spiegel toont een zelfportret op zeer bescheiden vorm, de schilder heeft zichzelf vereeuwigd in een van de details van de compositie.
De National Gallery opende in oktober 2017 de tentoonstelling ‘Van Eyck and the Pre-Raphaelites’ en belichten hiermee de invloed die de briljante schilder had op negentiende-eeuwse schilders uit Engeland. Op de voorgrond in de tentoonstelling staan bekende Prerafaëlieten als John Everett Millais, Dante Rossetti, William Orpen en meer. In hun werk is zichtbaar dat de spiegel in het Arnolfiniportet een inspiratiebron was.
