Diván Bricolage 12/9

Bueno, es martes (no viernes), pero estoy bruxando despierta. Es muchísimo el entusiasmo y la alegría, eh; pero un vértigo, amor... Lo puedo comparar con la sensación de estar en la montaña rusa, a punto de salir. Amo las montañas rusas; solo que se siente en la panza una cosa muy particular.

Otro tema, pero creo que es por el mismo vértigo: cada vez tengo más ganas de irme a Río y a Búzios de nuevo. A ver, nenita: calma, que tenés un pasaje a Sydney.

Estoy soñando muy seguido que soy mala persona; oscura, turbia, mala gente. Me despierto asustada, asqueada, preocupada. Debe ser por Dog Chow (es decir, dormirme nerviosa). Creo que se me va a pasar una vez que esté allá.

En otros temas totalmente ajenos a lo que es Sydney y eso, hay un muerto intentando revivir. Tuve que chequear con mis amigos que fuera realmente así, porque hace mucho que no lo veo, hace mucho que no tengo una situación sexual con nadie (ni siquiera solo de mi parte), y se me ocurrió que, tal vez, estaba confundiendo una buena onda con una tirada de perros. Pero todos creemos que es una TDP. Este chico, a quien le vamos a decir Kramer, me dio unos besos en el pasado (en el pasado, early 2010s). Una vez, me mordió las chicas y al otro día me desperté con la remera PEGADA a las cicatrices. Una vez, me había preparado para estar con Hernán, y como no me respondió el booty call, terminé dando un speaking en el vivero de los amigos de Franco B. Y ese día él se puso de novio con la que fue su novia hasta quién sabe cuándo. Nos seguíamos por redes, y yo tenía mucha necesidad de ser deseada y estar con alguien, y a él se lo veía muy bien. Creo que alguna vez le tiré un palo que siguió de largo, y entonces me di cuenta de que nada tenía yo que hacer con él, que la piba era un amor, y que en realidad a mí me gustaba otra persona. Ahí lo dejé de seguir. Si no te podés comer la torta, es un garrón estar frente a la vidriera mirándola. Y aún siendo un apio, si no es tuyo y tenés hambre, tampoco es divertido tenerlo en frente. Ergo, unfollow. Hace un par de días, en casa me obligaron a ver el partido de rugby de Los Pumas. Hay uno, Kremer, que hizo que esas horas valieran la pena. Subí una foto, y este Kramer me la respondió. Que pim, que pam, me dijo linda y demás. Mi ego, en la estratófera. La cosa es que, como ya no lo sigo, no sé si Novia sigue en el plano. A un mes de irme, me parece que sería de mala leche inmiscuirme en situaciones. Pero tampoco le quiero dar follow para sacarme la duda. Pero también qué lindos serían unos besos. Pero también, no es que el chabón me gustara... y al final, un gay fue quien me dio el beso más lindo del año, y eso me deja pensando en si es que la vara está baja, o si es que, en realidad, si solo quiero una sensación, no hace falta tal vara.

Hoy hablábamos con Nati, y me recordaba algunas frases de Hannah y sus hermanas que, según dice, vimos en el ISER, pero no hay chance de que me acuerde. Me decía que Woody Allen decía que se iba a morir, que no ahora, pero que sí eventualmente, y que no se podía hacer nada al respecto. Y pensé que me iba a decir que la respuesta a eso era "no te da paz saber que no hay nada para hacer? Como que es una preocupación menos". Como dice el proverbio ese de "si tiene solución, para qué angustiarse; y si no tiene solución, para qué angustiarse". Aunque la respuesta de la peli era otra, y la idea a la que iba Nati era distinta a lo que me esperaba, me quedó resonando lo de que qué bueno una preocupación menos y, de alguna manera, creo que tiene relación con el asunto de Kramer. Todavía no logro hilar los dos pensamientos. Los mantengo al tanto.

Spoilers, spoilers everywhere. Just a big bulleted list of thoughts as I read through the graphic novel. Not a lot of detail included, so it’ll make a lot more sense if you’ve already read it yourself!

looks like Moonshadow elves cross the arms of the dead... when they have a body to bury

it’s nice to see that Rayla imagines Runaan with all his shirts, the way she last saw him

kinda looks like Rayla changed into her jammies right on her bed and dumped her clothes on that little table. maybe she’s afraid of letting the few things she actually possesses out of her sight

listen we get one little panel of Opeli in here and it’s great

Soren’s cape smacking Callum in the face, 10/10

Lujanne’s appearance out of nowhere, along with Allen’s is just adorable, she’s so sparkly. And also she can apparently just turn totally invisible with an illusion spell? Even at a new moon? Probably because of the Nexus I guess

Lujanne’s “Big strong man with big strong feelings.” She and Runaan have exactly the same type and I support them

Allen’s face when Lujanne says it aches to miss Phoe-Phoe

Callum eating off Rayla’s plate and wondering how Lujanne suspected they were a couple, hmmm

Callum’s big reaction to the moon opals is adorable. The only other one he’s seen was part of a pair of treasured gifts between long-time spouses, so it kinda looks like he’s all “uhh we just started dating”

also Ethari must’ve made cute metal swirly covers for the pair he and Runaan wore, since these two are undecorated--maybe he got his from Lujanne?

listen Lujanne is a hoot and all but she’s both an ally and an antagonist. Her actions are trustworthy but her advice is generally terrible. It’s an interesting parallel to how Runaan says a lot with his actions too, but he talks a lot less than Lujanne

Rayla yeeting herself into a fight just to ask Soren for a talk is 10/10 Moonshadow assassin goals

but her hood is up when she’s lurking in the trees--she might not have known where she’d find Soren and was anticipating something less fun on the feels-o-meter

Rayla in the mud again. Soren keeps making people fall in the mud

Allen’s grumpy squiggle

Callum, I love you, but you have no respect for moon opals. It’s like they wronged you in a previous life or something

that dancing elf has very long hair and shoulder pauldrons, and they start off dancing with six kneeling, watching, hooded elves around them--Moon Druids wore hoods even before they were assassins. Considering what Lujanne said about why the portal was sometimes opened, maybe those six kneeling elves are waiting under their emotion-hiding hoods to farewell a loved one who’s recently died?

can’t tell for sure but maybe the elf is dancing along the lines in the stone like they mark patterns for ritual dances, which would be the bomb

Soren and Rayla’s conversation is pretty wrenching. Seeing Soren have to struggle with what he did because it’s tangled up with Viren is rough because as a Crownguard it should just have been his duty to defend his king and he’d have nothing to feel weird about

Rayla dissociating herself from the term “assassins” and Soren dissociating from calling Viren “my father” in the same conversation is 10/10 excellent growth

Soren must know what happens to prisoners his dad gets a hold of, even if he doesn’t know the details :(((

“we captured him” and “Viren took him” seem to be talking about the Crownguard and Viren, not the brodigies and Viren

Rayla having a wooden sword at the end of the day bc she played swordfighting with Allen and Soren all day long

the panel where Rayla doesn’t say anything at all after telling Callum that she asked Soren about Runaan actually says so much, you can hear it

every time Lujanne’s white lies idea gets repeated, things get worse

Allen’s reading glasses, there must be one optician in the human village and he caters to soft kindly gentlemen of a certain age

in the moon phase montage, baby Phoe-Phoe is flying next to Ezran after one week at the Nexus. Maybe he’s paying her back by helping her learn to fly after she helped him teach Zym how to fly! Did they bond as tightly as Ezran did with Zym? I support Ezran just bonding with the most powerful flying creatures in all the land.

the irony of Callum using Lujanne’s tactics against her is amazing, but really the white lies thing is a giant ball of chaos in this story and it does not play favorites

Rayla dancing with Callum even though there’s almost no chance she’s ever done that dance before

the lightning being a literal crack of doom with “CRAK-DOOM” as Katolis Castle appears, “echoes of thunder” indeed, very nice

Andromeda finds Rayla first and seems closest/most aggressive so I wonder why she might hate Rayla more than the others

the assassins’ wrist bindings have gone red but they’re still attached and seem to trap the souls where they are. But all they need to be free is to perceive that Rayla completed their task, even though we know otherwise. So... would that work for killing any target? If you’re certain that you did it, does your binding fall off even if you’re wrong? eyes Pip

this must not be the actual afterlife since the spirits kind of mist up toward the moon and vanish, it’s more like a lobby, no one stays here unless they get stuck

Did they even know Rayla was up there? Or is pod Viren/Aaravos actually making them attack out of hatred for Viren’s death? One of these is definitely creepier and more awesome

Rayla deceiving Callum and heading into danger alone because his life is more valuable to her than her own is exactly what Runaan did for her the night of the full moon in Katolis. I’m leaning toward her having thought this over and doing it on purpose bc she believes it’s a sign of deepest love--that Runaan’s actions and Lujanne’s words match up in her head, so she thinks it’s the right thing to do bc the mage and the assassin agree. Alas, Callum doesn’t understand the Moon arcanum yet, so he will have a different opinion. That mage and that assassin do not agree!

Rayla’s cloak has that Moon Temple symbol on its back. Is it Lujanne’s cloak? Any Moonshadow who sees it will probably know where she got it and who helped her. That could be fun!

B2:S - Chapter 6

Much of this series will be about the differences and additions in the novel version, and how they contribute to my understanding of story canon. But there will be character appreciation, the odd theory and headcanon, and suchlike as well.

Here be angsty Soren things, more angsty Soren things, Silence in the Library, Lujanne being Lujanne, moonfam thoughts, and a new headcanon that Katolis has its own version of Vegas now, for crack Reasons

Spoilers for Book Two: Sky below.

Omg it just jumps into Soren angst, nooooo! He still isn't sure what Viren was asking him to do to the princes, and he literally turns around to avoid endangering Ezran before he ever says a word about the slidey-sling go-fast rope

He does call Ezran a little runt, in his own head, but in a "he's weak and must be protected" kind of way

And then we get to the angst: he's so far under Viren's influence that just picturing the sight of his father's face as he says "failure" is enough to turn him back around to go set up some "accidental" regicide

it's a step downward, but that's all the faster anyone descends isn't it, one downward step at a time, and here he's thinking very small, just about his father's approval rating, and he's deliberately avoiding thinking about any other consequences because they're not as scary as his dad

I wonder if the way Viren saved his life when he was little involved his lungs somehow, the way Soren feels about never being out of breath since he's in great shape, like maybe he had bad asthma or got pneumonia or both. When someone survives a weakness, it's pretty common to work hard to strengthen that part of them so it won't fail them and endanger them again. Soren even has a little mantra to help get him through the stress of prolonged physical effort: "there's always more breath where that came from." It's a paraphrase of "this isn't going to kill me, I'm going to be okay" and that's very survivor of him

Soren's interaction with Rayla is so interesting! He doesn't challenge her at all, and he does what she says, risking his own life on his rope creation. It makes him hate her, because he knows what he's doing is wrong, and he hates getting caught doing bad things, but he can't hate his dad, so he transfers those feelings to Rayla instead. He sees her as "mean" and "scary" - but again, those are feelings he really has for his dad, and he can't look at those yet

Rayla visits Lujanne to ask for advice on whether or not to tell Callum what she's always known about King Harrow. In the novel, she doesn't go banging on Lujanne's metal moon sculpture, alas. That's one of the funniest parts of the Moon Nexus scenes for me. But I suppose it's really disrespectful, and Moonshadow society does like respectability

Rayla feels like she's in more of a hurry in the book than in the show, thinking to herself that she doesn't have time for illusions or for puzzles either. She still comes to her own conclusion after hearing and rejecting Lujanne's advice, like when you flip a coin to help you decide something and then you don't like the decision it made. What else is asking during a half moon but flipping a coin?

I still like the implication that Rayla has learned that strong relationships need truth from growing up in Ruthari's tree house. The book doesn't say anything to challenge or change that. I hope we get glimpses of what that looks like in BH - even if it's a bit angsty and the lesson is "we should have told each other more of the truth earlier than this." Rayla's an observant kid, and she studies Runaan like her life depends on it, because it does, so if she watches Ruthari fumble some trust and then fix it, she'll learn in real time the ups and downs of how trust can and should work. That said, she's still copying some of the angsty things Runaan does, like "protecting" a loved one by tricking them and yeeting into danger alone. If he hasn't learned it, then she won't have, either - HOW AM I BACK AT ANGST AGAIN

okay, ending with some good crack

ALERT: LUJANNE HAS AN EXTRA HUSBAND! In the show, she tells Rayla that her protestations about trust needing the full truth "sound like my first three husbands." But in the book, it's FOUR HUSBANDS. Lujanne ran off to Katolian Vegas, got married, and then got divorced during the gap between show and novel, lmao
