asanoha backs away from the lookout hole in the snow-laden dug out as haku inches closer for a closer look. haku peeks out, letting their eyes adjust to the snow-blind tundra of western snow country.
four soldiers guarding the castle’s front gate. six archers marching the walls. and, judging by the not-so-distant ruckus of men in their cups, at least ten more in the courtyard, not to mention the low level shinobi hidden away closer to the noblewoman’s quarters. all in all not the largest force haku has faced, but certainly nothing to sneeze at for two long range fighters.
“Asanoha, my dearest cousin, that is the understatement of the century.” haku says drily. slender hands are already at her collar, tugging her scarf into place and tucking its loose ends into her coat. they wouldn’t want someone to grab that in a fight. “stay close to me.” satisfied with the scarf, their lead hand drops to the hilt at their waist. “I will go high; you, low.” they won’t know what hit them.

Intertwining Fictions
Still pottering on with the editing process, I'm through the first third of the book, with the worst and oldest of the choppy narrative behind me and hopefully a smoother run from here on out.
While working through a bit of foreshadowing today, I came to a section where the story of TBT and Myrk Mire intertwine, and I thought it would be a good time to address that with you folks.
Myrk Mire and TBT share a universe, a timeline, and (though it might not be immediately obvious) many characters. This is something I'm really excited about, and frankly makes me slightly giddy every time I come to a section in one that underpins events in the other.
Below might be considered minor spoilers for folks who want to go into things completely blind, but there are also some important things like character names and genders for the RO's as well, so enter with that foreknowledge.
Let's get the elephant out of the room first and foremost. Currently, there are 4 characters in Myrk Mire (not including the MC and the Child) whose gender and name vary dependent upon player/reader choice. Obviously, this becomes a sticking point when it comes to integration with linear fixed narrative fiction.
So here's what's going to happen from this point onwards (the demo for Myrk Mire will eventually get updated once TBT is out on submission and I have more time on my hands):
There will be eight characters instead of the four, related to each other either by blood or association. There will also be some name adjustment to fit in better with the naming conventions of TBT and its tighter world building. So...
Peyton/Peidyn will become cousins, Plehtin and Pursa Starling, with Plehtin taking on the role of the previously combined gendered character while Pursa is the sister of Myne (previously Myrna).
Anadora/Abelyn will be sister and brother, born roughly seven months apart. Ana gets to keep her old name. Abelyn is now Abjalin, or Abja for short. Their story, as far as you folks know it, remains unchanged, but shared between the two of them.
Louis/Leila are twins, and Louis is now Leiz. Nothing much has been revealed about them so far in Myrk Mire, so only change for readers is really that the dynamic duo is now a dynamic trio. Lars is perfect just as he is.
Kelda/Keldan our mysterious little troublemakers/creepy lurkers, are close friends with one another, having been in and out of each other's lives for a long time. Keldan become Celd (pronounced as if it were a K, Keld), while Kelda becomes Cwylla (again, think K-w-ewl-la).
Right, now I realise the other elephant in the room is the MC and Child, and trust me when I say I'm devoting a lot of time and brain power into trying to figure out just how they're going to work in all this, but for now I'd like you to hold in your minds the idea that rather than a lone pair, they might be travelling with something of a larger group of companions when they first reach Aldmirham.
To round everything off, here is an extract from TBT that highlights the interweaving. No major spoilers, only hints and what's to come.

Really wished Tolkien continued his plan of Orodreth, Aegnor, and Angrod being besties with Celegorm and Curufin. It's genuinely cool and funny seeing as the house of finarfin hate Celegorm and Curufins brother, Caranthir lmao. I would love to hear your headcanons for it too.
Honestly my general h/c is that the Feanorians were not nearly as close with the Arafiwneans and Nolofinweans as those two groups were with each other.
The Feanorians to my mind were their sort of aloof, insanely overachieving weird cousins who are often out of town on family-only camping trips and possibly(?) think they're better than everyone else? Fingon and Aredhel are the only ones who really get close with anyone there, and Fingon only really hangs out with Maedhros of the seven of them (although I do think as I've mentioned before here that it's v interesting that Aredhel is canonically friends with Curufin as well as Celegorm!)
The Arafinweans and the Nolofinweans however, were basically like one big family. Anaire has definitely counted five kids at her table and taken several minutes to wonder why one of them is blonde. Aegnor has definitely called Fingolfin "dad" by mistake (more than once). They play like siblings, fight like siblings, defend each other like siblings. And I think crossing the Helcaraxe together and experiencing all of that trauma together only strengthens that bond and serves to make the Feanorians more the outsiders among them all.
I do also think it's fun and interesting that Fingon is notably close with Aegnor and Angrod, which usually doesn't get as much attention as his friendship with Maedhros. Pretty rough for him to lose them both in the Bragollach before Fingolfin dies and then he has to take the throne :(
Caranthir and Angrod's squabbling is one of the funniest Silm moments to me...tbt this post. I mean I know there are severe consequences...but it was still funny.
I can see why Tolkien did not press on with this, given how Celegorm and Curufin treat the House of Finarfin in Middle-earth...it kind of only makes them look even worse, that they stab Finrod in the back and try to take Nargothrond from Orodreth after having been close with him and with his brothers...but then that could be precisely the drama you're looking for.
