Wild that some British TERF ripped off My Immortal and became wildly wealthy from it while my girl Tara Gillespie is probably still suffering in Dubya/:

Oo what's the drama with Colin Falconer
I only ever read one book of his, but God was that more than enough. It was about Hürrem sultan... Well, mostly, there's this subplot about this chick named Giulia and guy named Abbas, anyway hon if you ever had trouble with low blood pressure, 10/10 would recommend, otherwise it's not a book for you, in fact I cannot imagine a book less for you if I made it up Goncharov-style. It's basically like Magnificent Century, if it was very much written by a western author and A BILLION TIMES WORSE
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century was a little unfair to Hürrem? In Harem, she's the most evil harlot to have ever been spat onto the face of the Earth by the hell itself. Seriously. Think of any redeeming quality she could have, quick. This Hürrem very pointedly and explicitly does not have it. Her love for Süleyman? Hah! She's been pretending this whole time to make Süleyman her slave! Love for her children? Nope nopity nope! This Hürrem actually lies to Süleyman at her deathbed that Bayezit may not be his son, just so he would kill him, because she wants Selim to take over. Not because she prefers Selim, but because she knows he would be a terrible sultan and destroy the empire she hates so much. Oh, so she's a broken, traumatized kidnapping victim lashing out against her oppressors? Well, I guess, but Falconer downplays this aspect of her character as much as possible, basically only mentioning her feeling "trapped" at the start of the book, just making her seem angry and not at all like she's, you know. Traumatized. So she at least has some empathy towards her fellow slaves? Or anyone else in the entire world??? No! This Hürrem is an absolute evil incarnate, like she does not do a single good thing for anyone else ever, even by accident.
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century didn't quite do the justice to Süleyman the Magnificent? In Harem, he's but a pawn in the hands of eeevil Hürrem, who catches every bait, is fooled by every trick and unwittingly helps her fulfill every evil plan of hers. To Falconer's miniscule credit, he does make an effort to kinda, sorta make reader see what Süleyman sees in Hürrem, and at times he's almost an interesting character, but one of the greatest statesmen of the Ottoman history he is not.
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century can be a little bleak? Well, In Harem, Colin Falconer has made it his life's mission to prove that he's the edgiest little edgelord, to only be beaten by Tara Gillespie. This book is an excellent example of wannabe gritty realism that ends up saying nothing about real world and not feeling real for a fucking second. Like, just focusing on the harem itself, the life there is presented as miserable, which, fine, we are trying to sympathize with these women... I would say if I didn't have a sneaking suspicion that Falconer lowkey hates, or at least does not particullarly care for the other gender. So what you end up with is an endless parade of suffering women that the narrative doesn't give any dignity, agency or empathy. The only exception is Giulia, whose life of repression and meagre attempts at reclaiming agency would be kinda interesting, if they went literally anywhere, but they don't, because Falconer kinda hates women, but readers even moreso. And don't get me started on the sexualization, because if Minette says you enjoy describing the titties too much you, you definitely enjoy describing the titties too much. Which together with the endless abuse of women just makes this book feel all the more gross.
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century has a problem with not being critical enough of the empire? Well, Harem tries that, but then Hürrem is presented as irredeemably evil for trying to ruin the empire and tricking Süleyman into fighting less, which she does not do out of political consideration, even though her arguments make sense and it's probably what IRL Süleyman realized on his own, also saint Mustafa is still there and still as much of a brave soldier destroyed by the evil Hürrem as ever... Basically any effort at critique is demolished as thoroughly as possible by the sheer force of author's hatred for Hürrem.
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century has unfortunately left out or underserved some interesting female personalities of the era, like Süleyman's granddaughters or the female buddies of Selim II.? In Harem, Ayşe Hafsa is... Well, there for a portion of the book, basically twiddling her thumbs, which is nice, because at least they can't ruin her. Mahidevran is yet another female victim without agency, just a bit more prominent than the others. Mihrimah is there for one scene, just to establish she hates her husband, have her exposited on by Rüstem and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING ELSE. Yeah. Like, fuck, this book almost makes me want to appologize to the Magnificent Century Mihrimah, she's a pretty unlikeable character, but at least she is a character. And Nurbanu? Nurbanu who? We don't know 'dem, and we certainly don't have 'dem over here!
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century was unfair to Selim II.? In Harem, he's a monstrous child rapist in addition to a drunken glutton. Also, no Nurbanu, because fuck you, reader, at this point of the book you really shouldn't have expected anything.
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century plays fast and loose with history? Harem can't even get the order of Hürrem's children right. Seriously. For example, Selim is the firstborn in this. Because why pass an opportunity to be pointlessly stupid?
Have you ever thought Magnificent Century is a bit lacking when it comes to medical knowledge? In Harem, an important plot point, by which I mean Selim's conception, hinges on a castrated man conceiving two children with two different women. Like a character in the book explicitly notes that unlike harem eunuchs, guards don't have the entire package chopped off, only balls WELL WHERE DO YOU THINK GAMETES COME FROM, AND YES THEY CAN SOMETIMES STILL HAVE SEX, EVER HEARD OF SHOOTING BLANKS YOU FUCKING GENIUS???
And just in case the things weren't bad enough, there's one final fuck you on the road with the epilogue, which mightily strives to be the stupidest fucking thing I've ever read - for me, a veteran of braindead straight women-oriented porn. Because no BDSM loving billionaire with a sixpack and big schlong can ever top this.
Basically, Falconer is trying to make his wildly historically inaccurate book seem like it's remotely plausible, which, cute, not the first time I've seen a historical novel do that. But at least they weren't trying to justify a man without testicles siring a child... And they didn't do it by claiming that every sultan before Süleyman was this mighty steppe warrior and statesman (after he portrayed Süleyman himself as a dupe completely ensnared by one woman's wicked wiles, again, adorable) and every sultan after him was this lazy, decadent tyrant, often also crazy (because sure, Mahmut II. isn't even in this book, but why the fuck not insult also him for good measure?!), so his argument is that "the line must've been broken". Because the great Süleyman the Magnificent (who again I cannot stress enough how not Magnificent he is in this book) couldn't have possibly sired a failson, his mighty sperm isn't capable of such a feat, it must've been someone else, like A FUCKING EUNUCH.
Now if you excuse me, I've gotten the long-requested review of this heinous book out of my system, please let me either drink myself to death, or detox by watching Good Omens, whichever comes more easily. Thank you and good night.

I’d like to echo the thoughts of the person who praised “My Immortal Lily.” I read it recently—in one sitting!—and it’s genuinely one of my all-time favourite fics. I’d highly recommend it to anyone who follows this blog. It deserves so much love!
If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Tara Gillespie and Albert Camus teamed-up to write some fabulous Harry Potter fanfiction—obviously you have, being a person of culture—this is your answer. It truly has everything.
It captures “My Immortal” in all its glory (lovingly, and without downplaying its wilder aspects, as many adaptations do), has a very fun cast of characters, who capture the “kids react to strange happenings at Hogwarts” vibe of the early Harry Potter books (but with far more common sense, and far more knowledge twentieth century history, literature, and philosophy), and—somehow, seamlessly—manages to turn the beautiful monstrosity that is “My Immortal” into existentialist literature. Mixing “My Immortal” with absurdism is a brilliant move, and the execution is equally brilliant.
Also: I had not read “Lily and The Art of Being Sisyphus” at the time of reading, but found it fully legible, so if anyone is uncertain on that account—don’t be! Same goes for “My Immortal.” It’s a very well-crafted story, and easily stands on its own; existing knowledge of either universe is an enhancement, not a requirement.
Serious kudos to you, Muffin. Thank you for creating and sharing this incredible fic with the universe! And to everyone else—go read it!
My Immortal Lily and the Art of Bringing Me to Life
Oh my god, consider me very flattered and very shocked. (I really don't expect people to like this one and at the time of writing got a few quite hilarious "Don't do it, Muffin!" style reviews) Thank you so much!
(For the record, it's also one of my favorites that I've written for what that's worth).

Didn't Rose Christo claim she cowrote My Immortal as well for clout and to publicize the book she was writing? I'm surprised people seem to have forgotten that whole fiasco.
Yeah, that's her. There's a bunch of evidence to show that she didn't in fact write My Immortal (one big one being that the author of My Immortal was a girl named Tara Gillespie, & Rose Christo's first name is actually Theresa, if her brother is to be believed), which is on the blog @rosechristo1 right now. I truly think she just did this to gain notoriety for her upcoming book, which ended up getting dropped by her publisher.
I also initially thought that she was claiming Cree heritage FIRST in order to wave away any criticism of her shitty book I read, but now I'm thinking she started claiming Cree ancestry out of fetishizing Cree people & AFTER writing her shitty book. She also claimed Lenape ancestry randomly despite claiming her dad was Cree (first plains, then she also randomly added James Bay Cree too??) and her mom was White. She has also, unfortunately, written about Shoshone & Lenape people :I

Five (5) Harry Potter (trans rights) fics to read before you die
That’s right I’m talking about the series written by that stupid fucking transphobe. Harry Potter defined so much of my childhood and growing up as a fan and also realizing that I’m trans was a really difficult experience for me. It kills me that something that used to bring me so much joy is now tainted by the author’s awfulness. Not to say the series isn’t without its inherent problems like the antisemitism, the weird slavery attitude, the disgusting fatphobia, and general homophobia.
Personally, I don’t consider anything outside the books to be canon; this gives me so much more breathing room as a fan to imagine a better wizarding world. Basically, if that bloody TERF had to specify it outside the books then I don’t care – she could have written it in but chose not to, once the book is out there EVERY interpretation becomes valid and if I decide that everyone was trans and also banging each other then I get to do that. Get fucked Joanne.
That TERF has also tried to sue fan works in the past and has said quite a bit about how much she dislikes fanfiction. But you see, I already want to upset her so I will be continuing to enjoy these fanworks that were, in some way, a great source of joy for me, something comforting in a world that seems to get more and more complicated and cruel every day. So this is a countdown of the five Harry Potter fics I recommend to everyone. You don’t have to agree with my list, but I just wanted to put it out there because it’s been on my mind lately.
5. My Immortal by “Tara Gillespie or XXXbloodyrists666XXX”: It’s the OG bad fanfic you have to read it to appreciate how awful it is. You don’t have to finish it, but you do have to cry limpid tears over it. Rated M on fanfiction.net CW for really extraordinarily bad writing, mentions of self harm and suicide, pedophilia, underage sex, and did I mention really really bad writing.
4. Turn by Saras_Girl This is THE Drarry fic. It looks at how one small change can have ramifications over time so if you’re a fan of the butterfly effect this is the fic for you. Rated E for sex scenes and mental health struggles. Technically canon compliant all the way to the epilogue but like, not.
3. Oh God Not Again! By Sarah1281 This is objectively the funniest fic written for this series. Adult Harry sassing everyone in sight is a fucking hoot. If you loved sassy Harry this one’s for you. Harry is accidentally sent back to his 11th birthday in 1991 at the age of 23 trapped in his 11 year old body but with all his memories and he apparently does not give a single fuck. Rated G but with trigger warning for canon-typical murder and violence, child endangerment, and sass so good it burns you through the screen.
2. Harry Potter and the Lack of Lamb Sauce by imagitory AKA the Gordon Ramsay fic. Yes, instead of Slughorn coming to teach potions in the Half-Blood Prince, its Gordon Fucking Ramsay and he has a bone to pick with Dumbledore about watching all this child abuse and doing nothing about it. It’s also Ron-centric which is so important because a lot of the fandom tends to characterize Ron as a horrible person when he’s the first person who saw past what Harry is to WHO Harry is and his strength in owning up when he does the wrong thing is actually very important to the series. Rated G, follows the canon ships, very very well written.
And finally . . .
1. Casting Moonshadows by Moonsign. You can keep your ‘The Shoebox Project’ and your ‘All the Young Dudes’ THIS is the Marauders fic for me. It is just so perfect in the way it develops not just Remus and Sirius but also James, Lily, Peter, Frank, Alice, Marlene, Dorcas, Mary and heaps of others. It made me care about the OCs! Its is a Wolfstar fic with background Jily and it is the greatest. It balances the angst and the fluff and as far as I’m concerned is canon compliant. This FEELS like a Harry Potter story, just with the way the narrative goes and it sucks you in so quickly with one of the best opening lines:
“Remus had always thought of memories as being like framed photographs on a shelf. Most of them were placed in the sun and faded over time. Sometimes the colour faded, leaving only a vague sense of the time; the outlines of a memory that changed a little with retelling. Sometimes it was the outlines that faded so the colour remained in bright, vivid blurs – a real sense of the time but no details.”
This fic will break you and then put you back together. It is rated M for sex in later chapters, quite a bit of violence, child endangerment, and mental health struggles. If you’re someone who is squicked by underage sex between two consenting teenagers or just not into sex in fanfic in general you can skip the sex scenes as they do not generally contain any plot.
PS Thanks for reading the whole thing! Trans Rights!

COUCH TOUR: AMANDA SEDGWICK with Dwayne Clemons, Aaron Johnson, JinJoo Yoo, Paul Skivie, and Tara Okamato, SMALL’S JAZZ CLUB, 8 SEPTEMBER 2023, 9 pm set
There were two options from the Small’s/Mezzrow’s complex plus a Smoke Stream I will watch this afternoon. And I will perhaps pick up Micah Thomas’ adventurous trio tonight as I made this choice to keep exploring. I thought I’d heard AMANDA SEDGWICK on Jazz Spectrum and perhaps I did, but this came as a surprise even given my reading about her and Dwayne Clemons.
That Clemons and Aaron Johnson were in suits, Paul Skivie in a jacket, and Sedgwick and JinJoo Yoo in colorful dresses wasn’t necessarily a clue, but it turned out to be a more old fashioned set than I usually go for. What do I mean by old fashioned? Maybe something like those 1950s Jazz at the Philharmonic or their extension, the Norman Granz/Pablo recordings of the early 1970s which gave space for Roy Eldridge and Benny Carter alongside Dizzy Gillespie and Oscar Peterson. The continuities with the pre-history of bebop were meant to be recognizable.
So, this ensemble did Honeysuckle Rose name checking a 1945 Cootie Williams version. Clemons muted up and took one of the fine, thoughtful solos that they all took all night. He played comfortably midregister and developed things patiently. Aaron Johnson’s tenor was similiar with a tone tending to the drier side. Sedgwick herself was throatier on alto. She also contributed, I presume it was she, the intricate and extended arrangements that developed the tunes. Her Center of Gravity was the clearest example, but all of them were far more than a quick run through of the melody, a formality to get to the improvisations.
There was a nice ballad section where each horn player played a different one. I couldn’t place Clemons’ and Johnson’s, but Sedgwick played Smoke Gets in Your Eyes. Undoubtedly there was some common chord progression as I kept playing Name That Tune and thought, oh, it’s Smoke when Sedgwick played. In any case, the rhythm section consistently delivered and JinJoo Yoo soloed like the others in a solid, patient way.
They opened with a Barry Harris tune which introduced their aesthetic—the arrangement, the horns’ tone, so they had bebop, the real bebop, in them, as did Jazz at the Philharmonic. But it was more old fashioned than my usual fare. So when the stream froze at about the 40 minute mark, I didn’t wait for it to resolve. I’d had what I needed both to write about but also to get pleasantly lost in the music. ‘Twas enough.
