The part of FS where Yukari injects a ghost story to “energize” both humans and youkai makes so much more sense as a method knowing about the hifuu thing.
The one where she comes up with rumors about the end of the world?
Really, this sort of thing is why I'm so insistent about the Yukaribel thing; not because necessarily it's so appealing to me on a character level— there are plenty of Touhous I can look to for "went mad with power and is now a lot happier"— but because it adds significantly to Yukari as a character. If Yukari isn't a former human, she is, at this point, basically the most boring of the sages; most of her plots come from a strictly utilitarian "well, I need to preserve Gensoukyou" point of view.
But even if you try to read her in that way, you'll end up with some oddness; why is she so resentful of the humans of the outside world? Even if she spends a lot of time there, Mamizou's nowhere near as cranky about the concept of being forgotten. Why are both of the other sages former humans? Why does she insist on the kinds of plans she insists on, if she's simply a youkai who knows a great deal about humanity? For example, why is she so interested in Kosuzu and Marisa becoming youkai if that would be strictly against the balance of Gensoukyou? She's certainly not interested in just more youkai coming into existence, otherwise there wouldn't be the ban on jinyou. Why's she themed so much around physics of the outside world, even though our favorite tanuki (and our favorite hermit) have similar levels of experience with the outside world? Why does she want what she wants, act in the way that she does?
A lot of Yukari's "incomprehensibility" comes from reading her as a youkai who's always been completely alien to humanity. If you read her as a former human who became alienated from humanity, you'll get a much better predictive sense for her actions.

Do you feel Gensokyo would indeed be better off if Reimu WAS more thorough in youkai extermination (i.e. actually successfully punishing Mamizou at all)? It's part of her real job, sure, but it's also a point against Gensokyo. Basically, do you think Mizuchi is right that humans and youkai should be as far away from each other as possible and constant enemies?
I think it all depends on the severity of a Youkai's actions, like, if a Youkai were to just walk around disguised in the human village and they're just kind of chilling and not causing problems then that probably isn't worth an extermination, on the contrary if a Youkai were to try and kill a bunch of humans in the village and/or threaten Gensokyo, then yeah, that's probably worth at least a beatdown from Reimu. In regards to the most recent Lotus Eaters chapter, I think that Reimu should probably punish Mamizou with more than just a slap on the wrist and expose what she did to the human village, but at the same time, the tanuki have to eat too. They can't normally just go and buy food from the human village because that would be too obvious. But still, if Reimu were to expose Mamizou's plotting, then that would probably help them in the long run if humans were more scared of them, and it's not like Reimu just exposing them would stop them from doing what they want anyway. Besides, worst case scenario, if Reimu does exterminate Mamizou, then there will just be a new tanuki who takes her place as leader. Again, it all depends on how necessary it will be for Reimu to exterminate them, and what doing so will actually accomplish.
I also don't agree with Mizuchi's statement that humans and Youkai should be as far away as possible, mainly because we've seen examples of humans and Youkai getting along peacefully together throughout the series. Some examples I can think of right now are. Alice and Marisa, Miyoi in Geidontei, Nitori just coming to the human village mainly to sell things, Aya schilling for her own newspaper to the human villagers, heck, all of Myouren temple seems to be in pretty good relations with the human village and a lot of the people who live there are Youkai, and Byrakuren's whole thing is wanting for humans and Youkai to live in peace. However, since Youkai run on fear to fuel their existence, I think there is some validity to what Mizuchi is saying. I'm not saying that the Youkai should be all buddy buddy with the human villagers, but I'm not saying that they should be enemies either. To use Miyoi as an example again, since she's a Zashiki Warashiki, she's only bringing good luck to the buisness she watches over. Her existence isn't as reliant on fear, like a lot of other Youkai.
Again, it's not a simple black and white thing, it's more so a spectrum of how badly a Youkai being near humans will fuck things up. Even if you take a look at the "balance of Gensokyo," constantly punishing Youkai for just chilling in the human village and not actually doing anything bad is only going to lead to more problems in the long run. Resentment will build overtime towards humans, and more drastic problems will start presenting themselves, which only leads to a constant cycle of Reimu having to fight even more dangerous and powerful Youkai that try to attack the human village, eventually leaving Gensokyo in a constant state of unrest, and while yes the spellcard system exists for that whole reason, there are going to be Youkai who don't give two shits about it and just do whatever they want anyway. For the safety of the human villagers in Gensokyo, not holding as big a fear of Youkai would probably help keep relations peaceful for a longer period of time, as well as keeping Youkai from becoming so powerful that it's basically impossible to keep them in check without having to exterminate them.

"So there was a kitsune hideout all this time here..."
At least, from what he heard when wandering around the Human Village. Somewhere around the Forest of Magic, was it? He'd like to see what kind of kitsune are there, just this once.
... And whether it's more organized than Mamizou's tanuki village. Just who was the leader here?-
The Forest of Magic being what it was, it was surprising that Rirune hoped to find anything - though being a kitsune himself, he probably did stand a better chance than most. Still, looking blindly, he certainly wouldn't find anything at first - though, eventually, he might see a fox flitting about. And another a bit later, and one more... the third one would flit behind a tree, and a moment later, a certain witch would step out from it, a curious look on her face.
Tumblr media
"'s not often I see someone just wandering around the forest," she said by way of greeting, lifting up one hand while the other set her broom against the tree. Surely Rirune would recognize Marisa Kirisame - who didn't? "You looking for something? It's a dangerous place, you know. People get munched up around here all the time, and I wouldn't wanna see that happen."

Urban Legend in Limbo:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Touhou 14.5: Urban Legend in Limbo (2015) is a major benchmark for the series.
The incident this time is that urban legends have spread throughout Gensokyo! These urban legends have tied themselves to certain people who are characterized similar to them. Apparently the urban legends are not able to materialize independently because nobody in Gensokyo fears them like they do youkai.
The Urban Legends are as follows:
• Reimu Hakurei: the Woman inside the Gap (basically Yukari is her urban legend)
• Marisa Kirisame: the Seven Wonders of the School (pretty much every high school in Japan has its own 7 mysteries)
• Kasen Ibaraki: the Monkey's Paw, (a poor substitute for her missing arm)
• Byakuren Hijiri: Turbo Granny (this gives her a motorcycle and a catsuit but it's really about a grandma running along the highway as fast as a motorcycle)
• Toyosatomimi no Miko: Red Mantle, Blue Mantle (she gives you a choice between a red cape and a blue cape and kills you regardless of your decision)
• Ichirin Kumoi: Hasshaku-sama (a Japanese Creepypasta spread on sites like 2chan about a tall dark-haired woman in a sundress)
• Mononobe no Futo: Okiku (a ghost girl who's the main protagonist of an old novel)
• Nitori Kawashiro: the Loch Ness Monster (she thinks it's just an animatronic she made but it's the real deal)
• Mamizou Futatsuiwa: the Men in Black, (it gives her a nice suit and a device that's not a memory eraser. It's just for show. Her tanuki minions are disguised as aliens.)
• Shinmyoumaru Sukuna: Little Green Men (littler than her? I doubt it!)
• Fujiwara no Mokou: Spontaneous combustion (she doesn't even realize the incident is happening for the longest time since blowing herself up is something she already does. The urban legend is mostly manifested by her fire turning blue and thus hotter.)
• Hata no Kokoro: Kuchisake-onna (Pretty? Not pretty? DIE!)
• Koishi Komeiji: Miss Mary (the CALLS ARE COMING FROM RIGHT BEHIND YOU LOOK OUT SHE HAS A KNIFE)
• Reisen Udongein Inaba: Kune-kune (another Creepypasta posted on 2chan in 2001, weird white red-eyed worm creatures that wiggle around upright seen off in the distance that make you go insane if you look at them too long)
Yes, Kasen's urban legend is not so much one as it is a well-known story that nobody thought was real. Same with Futo's.
There are also rumors spreading about seven Occult Balls, that when brought together, can grant any one wish (hey, that sounds familiar...)
The Occult Balls are tied to seven Mystery Spots:
• The Pyramids of Giza
• Stonehenge
• The Tower of Babel
• The Nazca Lines
• Yomotsu Hirasaka
• Hell Valley
• The Lunar Capital
The story itself mostly involves all these girls having whacky role playing fun with their urban legends and discovering the true nature of the Occult Balls. Right up until they go too far and almost cause the destruction of all of Gensokyo.
Strangely enough, despite the severity of this incident, Yukari Yakumo is nowhere to be seen. Instead, Kasen and Mamizou team up to fill her general role. Perhaps Yukari thought one Sage getting involved was enough, or perhaps she's just lazy.
In a rarity for the series, the status quo of Gensokyo is broken in two ways:
A human teenage girl from the outside world makes her way into Gensokyo; and leaves! She becomes a recurring visitor of Gensokyo from heron out, but never fully moves in. This provides the people of Gensokyo a way to hear more about the outside world, mostly in a negative, pessimistic light.
Second, Gensokyo as a whole is poisoned down to the roots: an incident has happened that Reimu could not resolve. Gensokyo has now become a true land of fantasy: if enough people believe something is true, it will be true. The repercussions of this are explored in both mangas running at the time: Wild and Horned Hermit and Forbidden Scrollery, and would continue to be a major element of the series until around 2018, at which point it's kinda forgotten about.
Thus begins a sort of trilogy that follows with Touhou 15: Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom, and Touhou 15.5: Antinomy of Common Flowers.
Oh, and this game got a Playstation 4 release, making it the first official Touhou game to be released for consoles.

I only recently started properly getting into touhou, back when I was mostly just watching from the sidelines I assumed that the setting was pretty much self-contained from the Outside World and I thought that the numerous references and modernities found in fan works was mostly just added for comedy and ease of writing but no, the canon is wild too. The Kappas have mechanized the Loch Ness Monster. The vampire quotes 80's Shōnen. The Tanukis have watched Men in Black. The Moriya Shrine likely sold Gamecubes. Marisa may or may not own an ICBM

had a dream my entire high school class was like doing a Splatoon competition but we were in at w touhou convention and everyone was in cosplay
you might think this was like we were playing splatoon. No we were having a fucking turf war in th gym, we were the suips. you had a few seconds to discuss with your friendsbwhat team to join so you could all play together and then you'd step onto one side of this box divided in half and that would be your ink colour. there wasn't any splatfest theme or anything it was basically splatzone but with way more people and way more potential for bodily harm because we were fucking inside
we were in a convention hall but we got transported to a stage that was like a zoo... thing. there weren't any animals but it had that like jungle feeling with lots of light coloured wood. also it was freshly built so it smelled strongly of wood
there were also these weird little creatures i got to hold during downtime, one of them was this furry thing with little hands it let me hold but when it was excited it would turn into one of those photoshopped animals with giant eyes and i thought it was scary as fuck. the other one was like a jerboa but purple and it shat on my cosplay , i don't remember wgo I was cosplaying as atm though, i remember after i changed into marisa bc my koishi was too expensive and cumbersome for turfing
also to get a weapon you had to fight over this little pile of plushies of the weapon or like, i remember my friend cookietanukiart on twt did a tanuki plush for squishable and there were three of them there (the third one was fucked up though)
the tanuki gave you a splash for some reason, idk why i grabbed a tanuki when i was reaching for nzap but i play both so it's whateva. i remember mostly using nzap though + i held the gun before irl so
also stepping into ink was weird bc the ground below you would just disappear at like ~120° angle and your foot would be completely submerged in, swimming in that was fun as hell though, couldn't see where I was going unfortunately LMFAO all i saw was neon blue. it wasn't slimy either it was smooth and thick, not sure what to compare it to though.... I guess if you put a little cornstarch in water it'd be similar. not too much though
it was a bit cold but when you zipped through it friction would make you feel warm ish, wasn't too bad
i remember sweeping during the blue v pink round, i was blue with a bunch of my friends
also I think i was a squid despite being an octo in game, but also I was just me with my normal human hair and shit, just could turn into a squid for some reason and so could everyone else
not sure what else to write, falling back asleep, will keep updated o7

Okay so since Foul Detective Satori is on my mind it's time for me to answer a question relevant to one of the folks here. Who is Mizuchi Miyadeguchi? Now, of course, someday FDS may give her a backstory rendering all of this moot but as of yet we don't know that. Which means I've gotta find my own answers.
Now beneath the cut I will be discussing aspects of the plot, though mostly in a brief way, so expect spoilers.
Now the first question with Mizuchi is this. Mizuchi's title is given as the Jailbreak King. Has she always been that, which would imply she was some form of master criminal in life, or is that specifically because she was able to escape all the security of the underground and afterlife. My own personal take is that it's due to the second.
So then. With her not being the ghost of some mastermind criminal, I'm just going to throw out some facts from the story about Mizuchi and see if that paints a picture.
Mizuchi is a vengeful spirit which implies that she died in severe agony and/or had a powerful hatred when she died.
She seems to hate Youkai. Explicitly stating that inside all Youkai are the same. She even goes as far as to lump Mokou, a character who is explicitly human just with immortality from the Hourai Elixir, in as being a Youkai. All of her actions within the story are specifically caused by her hatred of Youkai and more specifically the peace for Youkai that's come to exist in Gensokyo.
Her response to discovering that youkai such as kappa, tengu, whale-house-servants, Tanuki, and Kitsune are able to interact peacefully among humans by blending in causes her to exclaim that Humans lost to Youkai? Notably it's a question. As if she's shocked or doesn't want to believe it.
Also despite this hatred towards youkai, her anger is chiefly directed at the Hakurei Shrine and specifically at Reimu. Mizuchi clearly hates Reimu YET Reimu has absolutely 0 idea who Mizuchi is or why she hates her.
Mizuchi wants credit for everything she does. When she sees that the BBN has been reporting on Reimu choosing to lockdown the shrine and not come out she gets furious that Aya didn't include that her reason is because she's afraid of Mizuchi. But here's the funny thing. She concludes, once she sees she's not being reported on, that she'll need to spread more chaos and fear to the surface.
She comes to this conclusion smack dab in the middle of the human village. The totally defenseless against her human village. But ... she doesn't do anything to them. Except outside of Mokou (who Mizuchi explicitly states she considers to be a youkai) and Marisa (who has tried to interfere several times and who Mizuchi made clear she was fighting to make a point) Mizuchi never actually harms a human being in Foul Detective Satori.
She only harms youkai without giving any threat to Gensokyo's human population. Hmmmmmm. It's almost like she wants to specifically target Youkai for something. Maybe like. Some kind of word that starts with an e. Oh well, can't think of it, lul.
She collects cursed/haunted objects and carries them with her. Incorporating them into her outfit and also, seemingly based on her battle with Mokou, developing a fighting style based on using these different relics.
Oh yeah and the Kanji for her given name translate to Pure Soul while her surname has the kanji for a shinto shrine in it.
Now also. While I'm talking about her. I have some art here by the artist Spearsgun that demonstrates one other little detail I find interesting.
Tumblr media
While not exactly the same, particularly they wear different hair ornaments, Mizuchi and Reimu wear their hair in similar styles. Something that, I at least would imagine, is the traditional hairstyle of the Hakurei Maiden.
Okay so I think that's enough beating around the bush I have made it very clear what I am getting at.
Mizuchi is a Youkai Exterminator. That is to say, my version of Mizuchi at least, is 100% one of the prior Hakurei Maidens. Now my understand is that traditionally shrine maidens/mikos are chosen from children who show particular signs rather than being biologically related (in fact I'm pretty sure they aren't really supposed to have sex) so Mizuchi probably isn't one of Reimu's biological ancestors.
But she IS a predecessor of Reimu. One who has Totally different views on human-youkai relationships and one who, given she is a vengeful spirit, probably died in a horrific and violent way against one of the Youkai of Gensokyo's past (totally ex Rumia we all know it). One who thinks Reimu is a failure of an exterminator and who has let Gensokyo fall apart.
^^ Which funnily might make her a good ally to Kay's take on the Hakurei God. Particularly since she is literally one of her old mikos.

cool unsorted touhou hcs but theyre almost all pc98 since they’re more flexible and fun to think of scenarios for
uhhh long? yea. long.
everyone in pc98 is okay and alive (mostly) :]
ellen and koishi are good friends, kind of. they’ll run into each other, befriend one another, play all day, go their separate ways, and then forget about each other. this has happened many times.
sokrates is a bakeneko at this point, and the only thing keeping ellen from getting into too much trouble. although, he has no human form.
rika is from the outside world. someone (mima) told her that yukari was the god of the hakurei shrine, and beating reimu/obtaining her power will let rika go home. she also gave rika a spell book, in order to summon the bakebake. rika also made evil eye sigma using it.
consequentially, rikako was introduced to ‘modern’ science through rika briefly trying to integrate in the human village.
mimi-chan eventually stopped working, so rinnosuke tore the thruster out, and him + mima worked on making it into the mini-hakkero; so marisa can still have mimi-chan, and a better wand.
marisa’s natural hair color is a red-orange. she changed it to yellow using magic, (with help from mima) and it’s always been curly and messy
reimu, on the other hand, will not explain how or why her hair was purple for a while. trying to make her budge will not end well for you. (she used the yin-yang balls and thought purple would look amazing on her thanks to meira)
when flandre is annoyed with you, she will start yelling in french. this is terrifying to non-french-speaking fairies.
marisa named her pet tsuchinoko loaf, and they will still stop by her house to get fed, pet, and sleep.
alice is from bucuresti, but managed to get into makai alice in wonderland style. alice didn’t have a (good?) family to go back to, so shinki saw this small child and went “who’s child is this? nobody’s? yoink this is mine now”
elly has a southern accent. a really thick southern accent. how? i said so. thats it thats my take
rinnosuke is half wolf tengu. he hides a small tail, and has small fangs/pointed ears that he hides.
i’m taking yumeko’s theme, ‘doll of misery,’ way too literally. yumeko is literally a giant doll. think mannequin but with doll joints, or a big medicine. shinki made her as an assistant, and alice (who already liked puppets and all that) was awed by her. basically, the reason alice wants to create an independent doll so badly is because she saw ‘mom’s’ cool independent doll, she’d reach new heights with her knowledge, and also she’d have a good friend probably. (that’s where the ‘i saw a living doll a long time ago’ in BAiJR comes from)
because eiki and narumi are jizo statues, they are both unnaturally heavy, because stone. they cannot walk on thin bridges or ride on boats because they will fall. swimming is impossible, they just walk on the ground. if they get an arm cut off or something, then someone can just carve a new one, (or just use the old one) they can reattach it to where the ‘injury’ is, and it will fuse back on. also mario bros 3 tanuki statue shenanigans.
while in france, remilia would keep her mansion out to those who’d need to spend the night. mostly for her fellow supernatural beings, but also to homeless or lost humans who managed to find the mansion. in return, the guest would either need to help clean or cook, or give some of their blood up. refusing to do so would not end well.
sakuya was indeed, a vampire hunter at some point. while she was trying to kill remilia, when her time powers started working randomly, mid-fight, and she vanished. remilia was confused, and eventually calmed back down. 100 years later, remilia ran into someone who looked just like the hunter, but she was an amnesiac and had gray hair. remi decided to let her stay at the SDM out of curiosity, but she grew on remi. remi named her sakuya, since they were already planning on moving to japan at some point.
so basically: you know those urban legends about time travelers randomly vanishing in the street, only to appear years later? that’s sakuya.
clownpiece was born in a part of hell mainly for americans, so she has the most Generic American Accent possible. once in a while she will just start yelling in pure english, and has absolutely taught every fairy in gensokyo how to say fuck. color vs colour is an argument you do not want to have with her
the second ruukoto ran out of power, reimu hid her. when reimu built her shed, she hid ruukoto inside. the fairies of light eventually find her inside and dig her out, leaving reimu to try and explain to kasen why she has a ‘corpse’ in her shed.
cool and brief analysis of some LLS characters’ themes edited from a discord message, starting with kurumi bc shes my baby
kurumi’s theme is very upbeat, with a very short melody. so she’s naive and cheerful, while also being pretty prideful in herself. (judging on her dialogue) she does her best to keep people she considers her friends safe and happy.
elly’s theme is slow and more cautious, while also giving me the vibe that she’s powerful but holding back. (due to being rusty?) so she’s a bit scatter-brained (dialogue), but also weary and careful. and for whatever reason, SP~PC just makes me think of the word ‘hardy,’ so she’s that too
orange’s theme is short and cool-sounding, to get your blood pumping for her fight. even though she’s trying to run away from danger, so the song has a panic-y and dangerous feel too because she is scared of reimu/marisa. so she’s VERY prideful and does her best to make herself look strong, but is extremely cowardly, unless she’s cornered.
flower youkai are a real thing now, and yuuka, elly, and orange are all examples of this.
to make up for the fact that it’s placement no longer makes sense: mugenkan, the lake of blood, kurumi, and orange are all in the same space inside the hakurei barrier-- like mayohiga. not just ‘in the mountains.’ the way to get to it is in the mountains, yes, but it’s just not sitting up there casually. people would’ve noticed a lake of blood by now. (also! remilia and flan are noted as ‘the only vampires in gensokyo.’ someone would’ve seen kurumi by now as well.)
the reason why yuuka has a blue border surrounding her sprite in MS is also due to this. her body isn’t used to existing ‘physically’ like ‘that.’ it’s her energy keeping itself into a sensible form.
alice traveled to gensokyo in mystic square to avenge her and shinki’s defeat. mima is the one who found her and beat her, forcing alice to be her servant, until alice managed to run off. (probably with marisa’s help, i don’t see marisa as the type of person to let mima keep alice as a servant. close mom relationship or not.) alice couldn’t get back to makai, so she was forced to settle into gensokyo.
part of alice’s reclusiveness is thanks to being beaten up five times within a week, and then being forced into being a maid. thanks mima very cool
i say mima since there’s a hidden recording of ZUN beating MS’s extra stage as mima, last i recall.
yuuka’s interest in magic was quickly killed thanks to marisa.
after being defeated four times over, shinki’s power collapsed in on itself, and she was forced to pull herself, pandæmonium, and all her creations into a small orb of energy that sits where pandæmonium once was. every demon or magician that was in gensokyo at the time erupted into flames as their souls got pulled back into makai. this incident almost killing shinki and countless others is what helped convince reimu/yukari to set up the spell card rules.
byakuren, sariel, yuugenmagan, and elis are safe. sariel and yuugenmagan are fallen angels, therefore not created by shinki. elis is just a demon that drifted into makai, so she’s good too. we all know where byakuren came from and how she is.
pulling from the slow piano section of judas kiss’s midi version; mai didn’t like yuki at all, and is fine with her being gone, but she’s been with yuki so long that living without her seems impossible. like it’s just left a hole within her, that she won’t expose because she just hates yuki to that degree.
also using magic mirror for elis; elis is like a reverse-vampire when it comes to mirrors. she exists as an energy more than anything, and will use mirrors to communicate with people in places she can’t go. she ‘works’ for sariel, being the demon version of a telemarketer for the angel of death basically. that works exactly how it sounds like it works. elis is also in makai because she escaped hell. makai has a constant pump of magic through shinki, so elis can exist comfortably here.
the reason the management of hell has such a small budget is because hecatia keeps pulling the funding for things she considers important, but actually aren’t. the yama (and other gods of hell) literally cannot stop her. hecatia says it’s to support ‘disorder and chaos’ because ‘authority sucks’ without realizing she’s being the crappy authority figure.
not only is hecatia basically 3 different celestial-level gods, but they’re MASSIVE. bigger than kaiju-size. her human body is basically a vessel for her to travel in, anchored down by her collar and planets. the planets let her ‘switch’ between which ‘god’ is going to ‘pilot,’ even though all three are still hecatia.
since SoPM says kogasa can’t let go of her umbrella; if she does, her human form will disappear in a puff of smoke, and she’ll have to hop around as an umbrella for like, two hours. benben follows somewhat similar rules, but she’s still ‘holding’ her biwa since it’s chained to her. she’s offered, but kogasa says no to chains.
kogasa smiths with her umbrella in her mouth or something.
IKU NAGAE IS RENKO USAMI AND IN THIS ESSAY I WILL
extremely similar appearances!!!! there’s the changes in colors, but that could just be youkai-ification (like how possessed kosuzu had pink hair instead of orange)
iku’s power, reading the atmosphere, can be seen as an ‘evolution’ of renko’s, like maribel and yukari. she goes from being a living gps to a living weather channel host. godspeed for her
conspiracy theorist useless lesbian = funny tired fish lady. it makes perfect sense i swear!!

Also other important information relating to the list:
Kaguya is bushy because of her laziness. Yuugi’s proud of her body and doesn’t care about what others think, so she also lets it all grow out.
Marisa has thought of trimming herself for Reimu or Alice in a heart shape before. Sumireko can get close to bushy but more often than not has more self-control than Kaguya.
Mamizou is in her own tier because her pubes are practically a jungle. That just comes with being a tanuki.
