Talulla Rising by Glen Duncan The second book in The Last Werewolf trilogy
I’ve been a fan of Glen Duncan’s work for a number of years, having read three of his novels, starting as a teenager, then in my 20s and recently in my early 30s. Without exception all of them were narrated by male protagonists, Talulla Rising is his first book narrated entirely from a female point of view and I was worried about how successful and true his portrayal of a female voice would be. In this second instalment of The Last Werewolf trilogy we follow Talulla directly after the events of the previous book, I don’t really want to spoil or explain any of the plots of the novel, I’d rather focus on what themes the author has gotten right.
Talulla is pregnant and about to give birth, she’s worried about whether she’ll bond and love her children once they’re born, whilst I understand new fathers also experience this fear, woman fear it on another level, they carry their baby for 9 months inside them, there is suppose to be a special bond between Mother and Child, but what if your baby is born… and you feel nothing? There’s Postpartum Depression which can explain feelings of detachment, but motherly affection is NOT something every woman is born with, it is not something every woman automatically feels. Although society has an awfully hard time accepting it, because in their eyes a mother who does not love their child must be a monster, the truth is not every woman is emotionally capable of being a mother.
Speaking of monsters, Talulla is a werewolf. A werewolf who has, and does, murder and eat people. Her second fear: what if she kills her babies? Sure, we’re talking supernatural here, but the fear of accidently or intentionally hurting your child is very real. Through neglect, or in a moment of lost control, you could hurt your child, it is helpless and entirely at your mercy.
Then we move onto sexuality: the centuries-old Madonna vs Whore dilemma, the patriarchy would like us to think women are either one or the other. Are women who have just had babies, allowed to have a sex drive? Allowed to be sexually desirable? Talulla wrestles with the guilt of her body desiring sex whilst her mind is dealing with maternal grief. Surely the tragic situation with her son should be her sole focus, she thinks.
Forgiveness is an important theme towards the end. All parents fuck up, it’s evitable, we’re all only human. But will our children forgive our faults? Or will they use them against us, blackmailing us? Will parents pretend nothing wrong happened? Stubbornly sticking to their self-righteous self-image. Will the kids grow up to be little shits who will use that parent-child bond to pull at the strings of their parents’ hearts and get their own way?
The Last Werewolf was about the death of the lonely tragic hero. Tallula Rising is about social bonds, about love, about people. Talulla finds her people, her pack and experiences the power of female friendship. I’ve heard it stated a few times that one contribution to higher suicide rates in men vs women is that women have a more fully developed and reliable social support system.
Talulla’s voice is not softer than Jake’s (the protagonist from The Last Werewolf), she’s not more virtuous than him, she’s not kinder than him. Some of the issues she deals with are linked to motherhood, female sexuality and society’s expectations of women, but her voice, her intelligence, her wit, are on par with Jake’s, and for that I am thankful. She’s a Sarah Connor, an Ellen Ripley. But also, a Samantha Jones. And she’s our nightmarish, human-killing, werewolf antihero.

My OCs Master List
Until I carve out a huge hunk of time to update and to my OCs lists, here is a general character log of all my current OCs (minus my 7kpp OCs, they’re getting revamped into new, more original OCs because I decided to use them in original work in the near future). You can refer to this list for ockiss20/oc kiss week, any ask question posts, or just in general for your own curiosity. When I have the time later, I’ll add a link to their tags but I’ve known in the past sometimes their tags don’t show all of their posts so sometimes using the search option for their name yields more results.

Other things I like
besides Mortal Kombat... because sometimes I forget. Well I mean, Mortal Kombat IS my number one- for a lifetime. But sometimes I have to remind myself that the love of that fandom isn’t the only thing I love. Just the main thing ☺️☺️☺️
-rain: rain is literally the best. js.
- books: I love reading. Right now I’m reading American Witches- a non fiction about the witch scares in America, both for white settlers and Native Americans. It’s really interesting. Btw, there have not been any burnings in America, it seems. Not that I’ve read yet. Mostly hangings, jail time and abuse. My fiction is Talulla Rising by Glen Duncan. Part two of the Last Werewolf collection. I hate his writing style but his stories are good. The werewolves and vampires are monsters, there is nothing friendly about them and it’s quite crude sometimes. But I really like it.
-tea: cold , hot, green, white, black, rooibos. YES.
-Other video games: Mass Effect, infamous secondson, far cry, etc .
-good smells: incense, lush products...
-cacti.CACTI.
- dream journaling and sketch books.

can you rec good female monster horror movies?
asdfghj to be completely honest i don’t actually know a lot of horror movies? i’m not very good at watching movies and i get scared really easily so i don’t often watch them. i think joey @tenderbeasts posted a rec list of monstrous female horror movies here.
i can recommend other things though? some of these women won’t be technically monstrous but run maybe parallel to it.
the claymore series; it’s a manga/anime, and it’s my absolute favorite. the summary is this: “in a world where monsters called Yoma prey on humans and live among them in disguise, humanity’s only hope is a new breed of warrior known as Claymores. half human, half monster, these silver-eyed slayers possess supernatural strength, but are condemned to fight their savage impulses or lose their humanity completely.” it’s got very nearly everything i like in a series. it doesn’t sexualize them really either, which is honestly huge for a manga/anime? it does have nudity, but it presents it in a way that is meant to be horrifying. it doesn’t have explicit gayness but if you read between the lines it’s there. it has women who fight their monstrosity and women who embrace their monstrosity, it’s got a majorly female cast of characters (claymores are only women). and the main character, clare, is so interesting; she’s obsessed with vengeance, stubborn as hell, never gives up even if every odd is against her, and we get to watch her grow emotionally and physically stronger throughout the entire thing. i’d really recommend it. (if you want triggers you can message me -- it would make this too long if i listed them here.)
the monstress series; this one is a comic by marjorie liu and sana takeda. it’s ‘set in an alternate world of art deco beauty and steampunk horror.’ i’ve heard it called an asian matriarchy. it’s about maika halfwolf, a ‘teenage survivor of a cataclysmic war between humans and their hated enemies, the arcanics.’ marjorie liu says this about it: “monstress was more a desire than an idea. an impulse that came over me, something i’d think about in the shower or when i was driving and listening to janet jackson on the radio. i had this image in my head of a battered girl standing alone, absolutely furious, and behind her a battlefield that stretched for miles. i didn’t know what to do with it -- and i’’m not all that patient -- but i had no choice in this matter. nothing was there. no story. just the girl. i don’t know anything about war, not having lived through one. but my grandparents experienced the devastation of war firsthand in china. in their stories surviving was more horrifying than dying. surviving required a desire to live more powerful than any bomb or army, a summoning of superhuman resilience to keep going, day after day. [...] and the victims of this horror had to learn how to first survive...and then survive the surviving. [...] and the root of my desire, i finally realized, was to tell a story about what it means to be a survivor. a survivor, not just of a cataclysmic war, but of racial conflict and its antecedent: hatred. and to confront the question: how does one whom history has made a monster escape her monstrosity? how does one overcome the monstrousness of others without succumbing to a rising monstrousness within?” the art is beautiful. the story is deeply enchanting. i’d recommend this one perhaps more than claymore.
and i darken, and its sequels, by kiersten white; this one is not technically about a female monster, but i’d say lada comes as close as a human can get. it’s about the historical vlad dracul reimagined as a cis girl. she’s brutal. she’s wild. she’s angry, she uncontrollable, she’s badass, she’s amazing. i’ve read the first book honestly dozens of times -- once i got to the end i’d flip back to the first page and start again. lada is incredible. the writing is beautiful. i love it. the book also has a sympathetic portrayal of islam -- lada dislikes their kingdom for personal reasons, but her brother radu (who is everything she is not: beautiful, tender, kind) converts to it, finds home and safety in it. spoiler -- he’s also gay. (lada appears to be straight, which is ridiculous, but there are other lesbians) i haven’t read the last book yet because i’m rereading the other two first, but i’m sure it’ll have a good ending. i really trust kiersten white on this one.
sharp objects by gillian flynn; this one is more female villainy, but still. i posted a quote from her about this book not too long ago; i’d repost it, but i don’t want to make this post too long dfghj -- in essence this is gillian flynn’s exploration of female cruelty and villainy -- it’s about bad women, it’s about female dark sides, none of the women in this are portrayed very kindly and that’s the point. it’s flynn getting tired of sugar-sweet women-are-meant-to-be-nurturing women-aren’t-cruel-like-men women-can’t-do-genuine-bad-things narratives and writing her own where absolutely none of the women are 2D kind and simple.
the last werewolf series by glen duncan; this one i’m a bit iffy on recommending -- it’s got beautiful prose, and talulla is just as much a monster as her male counterparts are, but it’s got some.... issues. for example, the first book (with a male narrator) -- jake never refers to cis female genitals as anything other than c*nts. (at one point he literally says he’s not a misogynist because of the way he fucks women.) the ending of the first book is interesting though, and unexpected. the second one is with talulla’s point of view. she’s better than jake, but there is a point (spoiler) where a man is raped, and she’s mocking about it. (”women go through that every day, why are you whining?”) that part honestly kind of ruined the book for me, and duncan does punish her for this mentality, i’m sure you can imagine how (only attempted though, we don’t read a graphic rape, which i’m sure duncan would have included if he thought it would have worked). i haven’t read the final book and i’m not sure if i will -- the things i’ve heard about it are -- strange, to say the least.
the book of the ancestor series by mark lawrence; beginning with red sister, followed by grey sister, and the third one not due to be released until april 2019, this is honestly one of my new favorite books. it’s brutal and incredible and it’s about assassin nuns with a completely new religion in a fantasy setting (and some of them are lesbians!!). nona’s growth is really interesting to read and her interactions with her fellow novices are kinda what makes red sister. i’ve talked about this series a lot so i won’t do that again here but honestly, read it
carrie, of course, the book and the movies, i love the book more though, probably just because it gives more information on what carrie is thinking, i haven’t read it in awhile so i don’t have very many thoughts on it rn to give fghjk
ask baba yaga: otherworldly advice for everyday troubles by taisia kitaiskaia; this book is absolutely gorgeous, the writing is haunting and incredible and i’m really into baba yaga lately so finding this book was a godsend. it’s based on an actual advice column the author ran on a website whose name i forget atm -- she collected some of her answers into a book and published it, and i’m so glad she did.
i’m just gonna end this here because this got a lot longer than i intended sdfghj (i had more books planned to share too!). i’m sorry i couldn’t exactly give you what you asked for, i really don’t watch that many horror movies, i’m not into gore or too much violence or anything like that, and i dislike having to google triggers before a movie and getting spoiled for the whole thing. if you want more book recs though you can hmu :0
oh also! the monstrous feminine by barbara creed! it’s not fiction but it’s an examination of female monstrosity in film and i’d really recommend it!

WIP... Wednesday
(And it's actually Thursday but it's okay everyone just ignore that)
I've been working on and off on Year Walk, I really want to get the next chapter out soon but I'm not even halfway done yet- I did jump off on this idea to bring in some family drama and inner turmoil in Mipha through another Zora in the Royal Family, and she shows up with Muzu to give her own unsolicited advice. Here's what I have so far!
It's early in the morning when Mipha arises- Maybe a little too early.
The sun has barely had time to stretch its light over the desert, still leaving the waning moon to greet the Zora princess. Mipha rolled over in her bed, twisting and turning until she gave up on trying to go back to sleep.
It was already time to get up, anyway.
Right on cue, a servant bowed and entered with a wide tray, though not filled with treats and snacks--A bowl of steaming water, and an array of fresh gauze and bandages.
"How are you feeling, Your Grace?" The servant asked, not quite meeting Mipha's eyes.
A flurry of hushed whispers came from outside the door, just around the corner, and Mipha blinked. "Oh, I'm fine, thank you. Is everything alright out there?"
"Yes, ma'am." Someone groaned loudly, and the servant held back a sigh. "Everything is just fine, Your Grace. Although, I should warn you..."
Mipha listened closely as her wounds were carefully tended to. She bit her lip, unable to push away the rising nerves.
"The Zora arrived late in the night, though I am not familiar with them all. They are stationed at the Kara Kara Bazaar, and they are expecting you. I said that if you did not feel well, or if your wounds were still tender, we would work a different way around."
She tilted her head, peering at the wound. It had only been a day, but the potions and remedies were working as hard as they could to slowly mend torn skin. The scar itself was red and seethed with hot anger, but it did not show signs of infection.
And Mipha was surely ready to bite through her lips. She couldn't lie in bed when her family was waiting, waiting for her, waiting for answers. Steeling her shoulders, Mipha sat through until the servant snipped off the excess bandages, and stood back with a firm nod.
"On your word, Your Grace."
Mipha entered the Heart Room slowly, her golden eyes immediately scanning for familiar faces.
"Oh, Your Grace." The servant spoke up again before they entered. A Gerudo guard finished her urgent whispers before standing still once again at the staircase.
Mipha's eyes fell onto one tall Zora, indigo scales and slivers of silver, and her breath stopped.
"The Zora Ambassador also arrived, on her own accord. I didn't even know there was an Ambassador... Ahem, it seems everyone is looking for you, Your Grace."
It was a surreal sight to see Zora guards quietly mingling with the Gerudo, though all aminity was hushed when Mipha's shadow stretched over the empty throne.
Talulla immediately spun around, and rivaling her strong height, stewing quietly, was Tulsi; The Zora Ambassador armed fin to tail in embroidered silver, a powerful full moon to Talulla's gleaming sun. With every move, the scarves and jewelry moved too, stars against the navy blue of her skin.
The both of them gave a slight bow, a lazy nod of the head as Mipha inched closer.
Tulsi spoke first. "Your first time to the Gerudo Desert, and you've already gotten yourself hurt." She clicked her tongue, though her words did not bite.
"Tulsi, I-"
"I'm only teasing, you know. My apologies; I'll work on my jokes next time." Tulsi wrapped Mipha in a careful hug, the fabric of her scarves tickling Mipha's skin, and the princess allowed herself to breathe this one time.
"We have a lot to discuss."
"Yes," Mipha replied. "We do, don't we?" She frowned; She hadn't seen Tulsi in years...Why was she back? Why was there a bad feeling in Mipha's stomach?
Tulsi's stance spoke of carefully crafted, mellowed and blasé, but the turmoil in her golden slit eyes was a different side entirely.
But Mipha had also crafted herself an outwardly aura of perfection and grace, and not even Tulsi could do much to break through. Not in front of so many people.
"You do know that I'm not the only one who is waiting to see you."
"Is everyone here?"
"If they were, I wouldn't be here." Tulsi faced the amble crowd, leading Mipha back the way she had arrived.
The rest of the town was quietly preparing itself for the day, and no one seemed to notice the two Zora as they headed through the streets.
"You get one more guess." Tulsi nodded to the Gerudo guards as they stepped past the front gates, out into the sandy terrain. Mipha's heart sank into her stomach, and lurched.
"Muzu?"
Tulsi grinned as they passed by tourists, her grin tight lipped and uncomfortable. Mipha waited to turn a corner, pulling Tulsi aside.
"Wait a minute, please--What is going on? Why are you here? Why is Muzu here, but not Father?"
"Have you forgotten who Dorephan is? The King, Mipha. He sent Muzu in his stead, and when they heard I had returned, they sent me as a voice of reason--For you. To tell you to stop this. All of this."
"What...?"
Tulsi adjusted the bracelets on her wrist, sighing. "You and I both have our duties. People to see, things to achieve. Only difference is...Well, there's a lot of differences between us, actually. Anyway-
It's up to you to prove them wrong, Mipha. Muzu is going to tell you his opinion; Father's opinion. I've already heard it- I sat through two hours of it at home, you're welcome. Right now, they don't believe you can do this. So..."
Mipha waited, holding her breath. Tulsi turned to face the one way street. "It's ultimately up to you to prove them all wrong."
Mipha blinked, and quickly walked to catch up again. The morning sun still hadn't risen, adding a layer of uncanny to the liminal space. "You haven't answered my first question." She added quietly.
"I did. I told you what's going on. You got injured on your first mission, and now half of Necluda is waiting with baited breath to see you step down."

Hi, I came across your tumblr looking at silken windhounds & saw the video of Talulla alerting to your leg shaking. I know it is a terribly personal question, but I would really appreciate any answer you could share. What is the leg shaking a symptom of? I have recently started to have an issue with my left leg shaking like that & when I'm sitting cross legged. I am going to talk to my psych ab it this week, but knowing I'm not the only one with & what is a problem for you would be relieving.
Hi, sorry it took me so long to get to this. The leg shaking you saw Talulla alert to wasn’t exactly a symptom of anything. It’s a nervous habit that shows up when I start to get overly anxious, when Talulla alerts to this she’s really alerting to a rise in my anxiety which is helpful so that I can asses my surroundings, myself, and start to perform healthy coping mechanisms and techniques learned from my social worker to relieve my anxiety and focus on my dog and not my outside stressors. Talulla not only alerts to the fairly vigorous leg shaking that comes with anxiety, but also to little wobbles in my legs if I start to loose my balance due to fatigue. This lets me know I need to stop walking/sit down and take a breather so I don’t end up stumbling and falling. The leg shaking itself isn’t a problem, just a cue for my dog to let me know what I need to know.

As many Boston restaurants pivot to different takeout and/or delivery options, we thought that it would be important to keep track of them all. You can’t eat at restaurants, but you can still support them by ordering their food. This directory is organized by neighborhood, and outlines the status of each restaurant, what they’re offering (delivery, takeout, etc.), and what platforms they’re on. If the restaurant is marked as closed, please consider visiting their website and purchasing merchandise or gift cards from them.
Right now, this isn’t a directory of every restaurant in every neighborhood, but we want to get as close as possible. We’ll be updating this guide daily - so if you don’t see your neighborhood spot, or if you’ve got a restaurant takeout or delivery tip, let us know at [email protected].

When I was a teenager I, Lucifer by Glen Duncan was my favourite contemporary novel (favourite classic: Jane Eyre). I’d been educated at religious schools but was never a devout believer, somewhere between the ages of 15 and 18 I started becoming a goth; I was into obscure indie rock and metal, I was a snob about anything mainstream, I loved wearing all black and I read all the cult classics about “outsiders”. I questioned everything and was the typical coming-of-age cliché. All the elements were in place to make me fall in love with a book like I, Lucifer. It also helped that the novel was wickedly clever, genuinely funny, scandalous but incredible endearing. In my early 20s I read another book by Glen Duncan, Death of an Ordinary Man, a novel which didn’t have the obvious sexiness of I, Lucifer but still had literary richness. A book not to be consumed like a page-turner but instead savoured, caringly, bit by bit.
A few weeks ago, I decided to look up what Duncan had written in recent years. Here is The Last Werewolf. Anyone hoping for a repeat of the same things they loved about I, Lucifer, will be greatly pleased, we have here an anti-hero: a murdering werewolf who is also a charming and sympathetic human. The classic romantic tortured soul, but with a dash of dangerous beast. The writing is sexy and witty, violent and grotesque. My only criticism is that it seems too easily adaptable into film, it is too neat and I can very easily see this becoming a film.
But the real intrigue is only just starting. The Last Werewolf is the first book in a trilogy, the next is called Talulla Rising. I’ve read three separate novels by Glen Duncan and they were all narrated from the first-person perspective of a man, now it will be interesting to see if there’s a change in narration when the voice in Talulla Rising comes from a female protagonist. I’ve already had a sample of it in the Last Werewolf and as far as I can tell there doesn’t seem to be a very noticeable difference, which in a way is how it should be. Certainly the female protagonist will be dealing with issues that a male protagonist could never experience because of biology, but what I’m trying to say is that women are not from Venus and men from Mars, we’re both human, we as a society may make a big fuss over the differences between women and men but how many of those differences are inherent and how many are created? The opposite sex is not a mysterious subspecies. We can understand each other.
At some point I realised what a good metaphor the werewolf legend is for menstruation. Seriously, think about it: a transformation that occurs every month, it will alter your body and your behaviour, it can bring out heightened sensitivity, heightened arousal and heightened aggression, and pain, lots of pain in some cases. And you have no control over it. (well there are medical interventions…). Quite clever how Horror can illustrate our fears, here we have the fear of change and the fear of losing control, but more harsh is the fear that our bodies will just keep doing this to us, it is our biology, one we did not choose but one we’re stuck with.
Before putting The Last Werewolf back on the bookshelf, I flicked through it and realised how much I could have written about it -I’ve written nothing at all in this review concerning plot or characters. There are some books I don’t feel the need to write long reviews for, because they have satisfied me, because the effect of reading them is too precious to be explained in a mediocrely-written review.
