clumsy confessions - lottie matthews
Tumblr media
summary - in which a clumsy girl finally confesses her blooming feelings for lottie matthews (approx 1.8k words)
a/n - i'm really sick rn and i dont really like this at all, but i decided i gotta feed my fellow lottie fans!! hopefully my quality of writing will improve soon :(( love you all <3
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
you never really liked soccer. you didn’t consider yourself the sporty type; more-so someone who liked to watch the sport and cheer from the sidelines. however, something made you join soccer. something great, something exciting, something beautiful – and that something was lottie matthews.
the first day you tried to approach lottie matthews, you tripped on a cone. it was a rainy day and the team had just finished practicing. everyone was drenched to the bone, and you were excited to shoot your shot. however, during your walk to lottie, your foot caught on the demonic neon orange thing, and you had tumbled over, falling flat on your back. you squinted as rain droplets fell into your eyes, blinding you gently. when you sat up, wiping mud off your uniform, you noticed lottie watching you. as she began to walk towards you, you scrambled up and stormed away, towards the locker room. what you didn’t see was the brunette’s gentle smile.
this became a reoccurring theme. first it was the cone, then it was a puddle in the changing room, then it was someone’s bag, a shoe, and so on. the list was endless. eventually you did talk to lottie, and the two of you became close friends – not best friends, but you knew each other well enough to be able to hold up a long conversation, and gods, was she perfect. talking with lottie never lasted minutes – you were enthralled by her as she would ramble about some drama she had heard about, her poor french grade, her breakfast; anything.
you always had to tiptoe around her, since every time you tried to make anything relatively close to a move, you would trip, fall, or somehow embarrass yourself. unfortunately for you, this newfound friendship with lottie made you only fall (no pun intended) harder; and, with deeper feelings came a deeper heartbreak.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
it was nearing the end of the soccer season when you decided you would finally ask lottie out. with the help of shauna, jackie, and taissa, you had made the perfect fool-proof plan to talk to lottie without ruining your chances.
shauna and taissa had left practice a little earlier that day to rid the locker room of anything that could potentially get in the way of you and lottie; everyone’s shoes were neatly arranged under the benches, bags were shoved far into a corner that you rarely inhabited, and the floor was completely dry, eliminating any chance of slipping.
outside, jackie kept an eye out for any cones, any loose bags, jerseys, muddy puddles and kept the girls busy so that you could have your moment.
as practice ended, you began to walk towards lottie, deciding to have a short conversation before dropping the bomb. you nodded at jackie as she straightened herself up before announcing, “everyone please stay behind for a second! i have some criticism to give, (y/n) and lottie, you can go ahead.”
everyone emitted a loud groan as you skipped over to your beautiful friend who only smiled at you with the most gentle, heavenly grin ever.
“hey, (y/n), practice was tough today, wasn’t it?”
you nodded, walking alongside her across the field, “yeah, jackie just keeps pushing us harder and harder. i guess because the season is coming to an end… do you think you’ll be able to keep up with practice over the summer?”
“oh yeah, for sure!”, lottie quipped, “i go jogging every morning anyways, and then i’m sure jackie will organise something with coach martinez too.”
humming in response, the conversation quickly fell silent. normally, silence with lottie was never a problem. you felt comfortable with her, and she felt comfortable with you, so the two of you could often just enjoy each other’s company without needing to talk. however, today, the atmosphere felt heavier.
lottie looked ahead for a brief moment, but right before entering the locker room, she stopped you. “(y/n),” you looked up to meet her intense gaze, “is something wrong?”
taking a deep breath, you looked down at your hands, then back up at her, “um, well..”
you took a few steps towards the sink to wash your hands, “yeah, i wanted to ask you somethi-“
you were cut off by the sensation of something catching under your foot, and straight after, you went tumbling down, lurching towards the lockers. before you knew it, you felt your head slam against something hard and cold with a loud “THNK!”
you picked yourself up after a moment, clutching your head in pain. recollecting yourself, you looked down at your shoes to notice you had tripped on your own shoelace, launching yourself against a locker. lottie quickly bent down next to you, worry etched on her face. “are you okay, (y/n)?”, she gasped, helping you up, “please sit down so i can-”
“forget it, lottie!” you snapped, voice trembling. dizzily, you stood up and strutted out, clenching your jaw, as you bit back tears. you were done with trying anymore; you couldn’t help but embarrass yourself. bitterly, you decided that lottie would probably always see you as a klutz – you had to just get over her, because you knew that you would never recover from the embarrassment of what had just happened.
you bumped shoulders off jackie who was now walking into the locker room, eliciting a concerned look from her. her gaze followed you, lingering for a second, before returning towards lottie. “did (y/n) trip?”, is all she asked, lottie nodding her head in response. jackie sighed deeply. she didn’t want to out you nor your crush to her teammate, but at this point, she was too concerned for your wellbeing, and furthermore the wellbeing of the team.
“i know she likes me,” lottie said, simply, interrupting jackie’s train of thought, “i just want her to ask me – i’ve known since the day she first joined practice.”
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
avoiding lottie was eerily easy. you had simply stopped being near her all together since conversation would fall flat almost immediately. during practice, the two of you played on different teams, and lottie often stared at you longingly from the other side of your chemistry class. you began to feel awful, wondering whether she had figured out your feelings and was content with you avoiding her. it had been a week now, and lottie began to grow frustrated.
closing your chemistry textbook, you zipped your bag up, waving bye to van, your lab partner. you noticed lottie stare at you in the corner of your eye before she suddenly stood up, beelining towards you. “shitshitshit,” you mumbled nervously under your breath, speeding out of the lab.
she was on your pursuit, calling your name, only causing you to speed up, barrelling through the tsunami of oncoming students. however, before you knew it, someone grabbed you by the wrist and shoved you into a nearby janitors’ closet.
you could feel your heart in your throat as lottie leaned against the door of the poorly lit room, glaring at you. your palms grew sweaty, and you felt almost small as you waited for her to say something.
after what must’ve been a tense silence of twenty seconds, you decided to make a move towards escape.
“hey, uh, look, lottie, i have calculus now and-”
your foot slipped, catching off a bucket and you fell forwards, towards your teammate. your hands slammed on the door, her head in between. “shit, sorry…”, you murmured, your faces close together. lottie watched you intently, both of your cheeks reddening.
“(y/n),” she said, voice laced with an amorously velvet tone, “i know you want to tell me something.”
“uh.. i, uh…” your brain short circuited momentarily. being in this position with lottie was bad enough, but between the way she was staring at you, and the tone of voice she had used, you were expecting to pass out from how flustered and hot you were feeling.
“just do it,” she whispered, voice softer now.
you gulped, feeling a knot form in your stomach from the anxiety that had built up this past week.
“lottie, i really like you.”
lottie cracked a smile, her heart beginning to match the pace of your own, “i like you too, (y/n).”
you looked at her as she blinked innocently with doe eyes, shock on your face. “no, like, lottie. i really like you. like, i want us to go on dates and cuddle and kiss and shit.”
the room fell silent, and you swore, lottie could hear your heart thumping against your ribcage.
“are you willing to lose me if you pursue these feelings?”, she teased, watching your face scrunch up in hesitation.
“i… yes,” you replied simply, “i really want to spend the rest of my life with you, but as more than a friend.”
your muscles began to ache, being held in their strenuous position. however, you held up for a little longer, watching as thoughts whirred through lotties head, her eyes glinting in deep pondering. then, she wrapped an arm around your waist, pulling you closer. her lips crashed on yours, inducing you to moan breathlessly.
the first thing you learned about lottie matthews that day was that she was a good kisser. she steered your body and lips with her own, gliding her hands across your spine with feathery touches, bringing out a shiver. her lips were soft and gentle against your own, as she engulfed you in a passionate heat, bringing a hand up to hold your jaw. the second thing you learned about lottie matthews that day is that she was a tease.
you gasped, breathlessly, as she pulled away, nipping at your bottom lip in the process. her eyes darkened as she smirked at you deviously. “lets talk about our feelings some more after practice today. my house?”
“uh…”, you whimpered, as she looked into your eyes deeply before placing a feathery peck on your lips.
“later, (y/n)”, her voice was laced with sticky honey, as she scrunched her nose teasingly, before slipping out of the closet. you stood there, lips flushed and face so hot, that you swore you were running a fever. then suddenly, you erupted into a joyous giggle and smile, recalling the way she had looked at you. you were desperate for more.
to say the least, practice that day was much more difficult than ever before. every time lottie exchanged an innocent smile with you, you remembered what had happened in the janitor’s closet, causing your legs to wobble, and a lovestruck smile to emerge onto your face. jackie had come up to you on multiple occasions, checking in on you.
“your face is so red, (y/n), are you alright? do you need to sit? do you want some water?”
you didn’t reply, simply catching lottie’s smirk from across the field.
the third thing you learned about lottie matthews that day is that she liked you back.

Hey! I saw that your requests were open and I was wondering if you could write some head canons on how Nat would be as a partner. I’d love to know how you think she would react to affection and whatever else you might think up.
Thank you!
Tumblr media
dating natalie scatorccio
pairings. pre crash! natalie scatorccio x reader
i find nat such a fascinating and layered character, i really enjoyed delving into a little part of her with this. i particularly focused on her and showing affection in the beginning & then spiralled into into pure fluff towards the end. i hope i did her justice and it’s what you had in mind! thank you for the req!
-
one thing i truly believe about natalie is that she has an incredible amount of love to give, despite the tough exterior that she puts up.
when she loves someone she loves them so deeply that it completely consumes her, despite the unfamiliarity of it terrifying her.
natalie has an immensely complicated relationship with intimacy and affection almost ingrained in her. it is when she feels her most vulnerable, and as she’s only been shown affection in the past solely for the other’s sexual benefit, building the trust in not only you but your intentions took time, and was a learning curve for the both of you.
her emotions hugely drive her actions, and this especially reflects when it comes to her love for you.
she is fiercely loyal and protective over you, and will go to any length to defend you, not wanting you to feel even a glimpse of hurt.
she is almost unbelievably observant. she knows all of you, and pays attention to every minuscule detail to which most turn a blind eye. she knows by the slightest twitch of your lip exactly how you’re feeling - and how to react to this. she knows all of your cues.
physically showing her affection, and allowing herself to be shown it was not something that came naturally to her in the slightest.
despite this, she knew exactly when you needed it, and was always more than happy to comply, secretly finding comfort herself within it, though rarely initiating in the beginning.
with time, she learns her own cues and allows herself to give into them, whether it be gently intertwining your hands whilst in public, allowing her fingers to freely roam your back - tracing a variety of shapes and doodles, or even pressing kisses all over your face until she reaches your lips, grinning and pretending not to melt as you blush furiously.
above all, nat’s values reassurance, alongside quality time with you.
you would tell her all day everyday if she needed, that you loved her with all of you, and that you aren’t going anywhere.
-
just some general wholesomeness
-
you go on a surprising amount of dates. they’re rarely the stereotypical fancy dress up dinner ones, especially because the few times you’ve attempted to, you never managed to actually leave the house due to natalie…..distracting you….when she sees you dressed up.
they’re more experiences, skinny dipping in a lake at midnight and forcing yourselves underwater when the nearby house’s lights switch on, or something like mini golfing, which natalie never loses (she does, without fail, everytime. sometimes you think she’s messing around. she’s that bad. but you’d never tell her that.)
skipping class together was more of a regular occurrence than either of you actually attending
she gets jealous easily, and has to bite her tongue when you even glance in the direction of another person, but at least she looks hot whilst doing it
you fall asleep in her lap or slumped against her shoulder, tucked into her neck, on a regular basis. she teases you relentlessly for it, but secretly, when you’re asleep she’ll be whispering for everyone to shut up through gritted teeth so you aren’t disturbed, throwing up the odd middle finger or two at taissa’s whip noises.
literally being the grumpy vs sunshine trope
making out in the locker room when the room is empty for more than a second, regardless of whether you’re on the team or not
the entire team just loving how happy you both make eachother and it actually adding to team spirit
you both balancing eachother out perfectly, you were calm where she was tense and she was outgoing where you were anxious.

alright more pre-crash yellowjackets thoughts! this time: shitty high school jobs they had! (i worked 5 different shitty minimum wage jobs between the ages of 15-18 and have thought about the concept with more gravity than it deserves sorry)
shauna: was a tutor during the school year for literally every subject. she was the only reason jeff and randy passed their junior year. even though she could use the money, shauna never charged any of her teammates if they needed some help. when school was out during the summers, she had a seasonal job at the concession stand at the local concert venue. pretty easy money and she liked listening to the bands play
jackie: unemployed. being the coolest girl in school is a full time job, after all! note: tried to get a job with shauna at the concession stand. it was a complete and utter disaster. she lasted a week, and only made it that long because of how much shauna covered for her. after that didn’t pan out, when shauna worked weekends, jackie would always buy a concert ticket… just to hang out by the concession stand and talk with shauna for the whole show
nat: her first job was working at the local pizza parlor. was employed there for 6 months until it got shut down because, as it turns out, the whole thing was a money laundering front for the mob (which explains why nat never got fired despite being actually kinda bad at making pizzas). after that, she goes to work the 6pm-midnight shift at the grimiest gas station in wiskayok. except for the occasional stick up, it was a quiet job where no one bothered her and she could buy her own cigarettes. however she was constantly sleep-deprived having to get up for school in the mornings. definitely created energy drink concoctions that would send most people into cardiac arrest. van and the other yellowjackets would always stop by to see her on shifts and nat always gives them free slurpees
van: started working at the movie theater in the mall when she was 14 (the owner needed the help and did not ask enough questions). van is the rare sort of person that is absolutely beloved by both customers and her fellow employees and no one was surprised when she became a manager. she has the best customer service and will help out all the other employees with whatever they need. to this day she still holds the record for most Employee of the Month awards. also i just know van was the ultimate hookup and snuck her friends into shows and definitely took home the leftover popcorn after her shift. if she knew nat was on shift at the gas station, she’d stop by on her way home and give her some
taissa: never worked during the school year because she took way too many classes and extracurriculars (she was a 3-sport athlete: cross country in the fall, basketball in the winter, soccer in the spring. also did debate team AND student gov). her parents actually tried to talk her out of getting a summer job, but taissa has never relaxed a day in her life. she took a job at a clothing store in the mall and claimed she chose it for the employee discounts. the fact the store was located in the same mall as the movie theater was unrelated to anything whatsoever (tho taissa and van’s break schedules coincidentally always lined up and they’d hang out and go to the arcade where they’d have competitions… loser had to buy the winner food from the food court afterwards).
anyways tai would have been a perfect employee… if she didn’t have the world’s worst customer service (“for the fifth and final time, i am not going to give you a goddamned refund if you don’t have the RECEIPT and if you try putting that ugly ass blouse in my face again i will shove it up your-”) …had to have routine talks with HR throughout her tenure there. her manager gently suggested therapy, once.
lottie: didn’t need the money but definitely got a job out of boredom. decided to lifeguard as a summer job. it was basically getting paid to tan and tell kids to stop running. she had a sixth sense for when it’s about to start storming. her coworkers stopped questioning it after a few months and now when lottie says to get everyone out of the pool, they get everyone out of the pool. from lifeguarding lottie actually learned enough about pool maintenance to do the work and check the chemical balances on the pool at her own house. her father thinks the whole thing is ridiculous, her mother thinks it’s nice she has a hobby
laura lee: didn’t work a paid job but volunteered. she played piano for the local church services and on weekdays she worked evenings at the local food bank. if she sees anyone from school show up, it stays between her and God. she has managed to rope each of the yellowjackets into volunteering with her at least once
mari: worked at a local restaurant. tried to be a waitress, but on her very first day she got three different customer complaints about her attitude and so the owner put her in the kitchen where she became a linecook. she had more healthcode violations in her 1.5 years of working there than every other employee combined. the manager fired her on a weekly basis but she always just showed up to work the next day like nothing happened and the boss always took her back because mari is the best damn linecook he ever had
akilah: she’s a baby and was too young to work an actual job but definitely did babysitting (mostly for family). definitely was the kid-whisperer. had plans to work at library once she turned 16
misty: volunteered at the local retirement home and developed a love-hate relationship with an 85yo named Ethel (and by love-hate i mean: misty loved ethel, ethel hated misty)

Nugget, the Shifting Cast of Extras, and the Unreliable Narrator
One of the biggest twists of season 2 that I completely did not see coming, is that Nugget was dead all along (a rare miss for me, as I'm usually a great plot guesser). All of the scenes with Nugget were seen through Akliah's eyes; we saw only what she saw/believed, and that was a whole, living mousey friend. The minute Taissa, an outside perspective, came to notice Nugget, we all saw the truth: that he was dead, and had always been dead, and his life with Akliah was nothing but a coping mechanism, a dream that allowed her to keep sane as death slowly closed its claws around all of them.
Akilah was not a reliable narrator of her own story. None of them are.
In this context, the constantly rotating, growing, and shrinking cast of extra JV Jackets makes much more sense. Much of the teen storyline is told through the perspectives and memories of the adult survivors, and through the journals that Shauna kept in the wilderness (more reliable having been written in the moment, but still shaped by her limited perspective as well as trauma and hunger).
It makes sense that their memories focus only on those who are important to what is happening at the time, and the others fade into the background or disappear entirely as their relevance diminishes.
They remember what one background extra wore to the Doomcoming, but forget where she was during the Jackie Snackie. They remember who stood at the gravesite by the plane, but not who drew cards during the first hunt.
Gen and Melissa only got screen time this season because one of the survivors remembers their conversations and interactions. Crystal shows up because of her friendship with Misty. Akilah has a bigger part in s2 due to the Nugget plot and her role in Shauna's labor. Mari has a bigger presence in s2 because she's increasingly annoying and antagonistic to the other survivors, as well as chief acolyte of the Cult of Lottie.
Memory is a tricky thing, and memories made during trauma and starvation are trickier still. They simply don't have the brain power right now to accurately encode memories (adult Lottie mentions this, though she neglects to say that a brain that normally consumes A THIRD of the calories you take in understandably doesn't work very well under starvation conditions).
My prediction is that background YJs will come and go based on their relevance to the events happening on screen. It's not a mistake by the show runners or poor planning or an accident; it's all by design.
Not only does this work in-universe as an explanation for backgrounders coming and going, it gives the writers flexibility to bring in edible characters without having to explain why we haven't seen them before; they've always been there, they just didn't matter until now.
(It also serves to explain why, despite being on the brink of death from starvation, the girls still look pretty normal weight. The out-of-universe explanation is that it's morally reprehensible to ask the young cast to drop to a starvation weight and maintain it for the entire run of the show [or yoyo between seasons, which is even more dangerous]. The in-universe explanation is they remember themselves looking normal, so that's what we see. Just like we saw a healthy, living Nugget. Until we didn't. I wonder if we're going to see a "true" view of them through the eyes of the rescue crew that eventually saves them. Much easier to present one good vfx shot of them looking as haggard as they would actually be rather than multiple seasons.)

One thing about me is that no matter what is happening in my life I will be having thoughts about Shauna Shipman and Jeff Sadecki’s wedding.
I think about Shauna inviting Mr. and Mrs Taylor and Mrs. Taylor making passive aggressive comments to Shauna all night about how Jackie would’ve been the most beautiful bride marrying Jeff and Shauna just taking it because GUILT.
I think about Shauna and Jeff also having to grieve their baby but not being able to talk about it and just going through the day as if this tremendous loss never happened.
I think about Van and Taissa probably nearing the end of their relationship but desperately trying to hold on to each other still and doing silly little things (like the bosom pen) to make each other smile and salvage things.
I think about Nat and Travis both tragically doomed by the narrative spending the night together on the dance floor talking with a rare sense of hope about their own future together.
I just have so many thoughts!

Super long yellow jackets analysis sorry but
Yellow jackets season 2 finale answers so many questions that I didn’t even think to ask. Natalie being a wilderness chosen leader explains her treatment by the survivors as adults, because she isn’t just treated as a teammate. Natalies treatment reflects that none of the girls ever grew out of their time in the wilderness
Misty is misty. She has always worshipped Natalie as an adult, but in retrospect she very rarely interacts with her in the wilderness. Misty is insane, but I never even noticed that she particularly insane when it comes to Nats safety. She acts like a guard dog, and Natalie understands that. In s1, when Misty does stuff like tear out her Porsches battery, put a camera in her room, kidnaps the reporter. It’s Natalie who goes to Misty to ask for help with Adams body, not Shauna. We don’t need to go more in depth about how loyal Misty is, but the fact that Natalie never feels in danger, and reacts to Misty’s obbsession with annoyance was always… odd.
And it’s not just Misty. Taissa pays for Natalies extremely expensive rehab, 5 times over. Taissa, who is willing to hold a political opponents daughters drug problem as leverage, does her part for protecting Natalie. Lottie literally has her followers stalk and kidnap her. Yes she was right to worry about Natalie, but that kind of reaction is complety disproportionate.
And that’s just those three. Misty, Taissa and Lottie still have a loyalty and servitude to Natalie. In their own way, they don’t put nearly that much work into one another. They don’t fight with Natalie like they do with eachother, but hold her still at an arms length.
And Shauna does the same thing. Shauna was never a true follower of the wild until the very last episode of s2, and you can still see that with Natalie. Besides Misty, Shauna is one of the few girls with a designated role. No one carves or skins, just Shauna. I feel that in the wilderness, this keeps her from turning to the cult, because the girls are radicalized because they feel helpless. Shauna doesn’t need that, until she feels helpless. No baby, no food, nothing but Lottie’s who’s dying because of her. Her relationship with Natalie is much more detached, because Natalie is more of her collaborator than the others. Shauna can’t carve unless Natalie hunts, and Natalies hunts would be pointless without Shauna.
And then VAN. I’m calling it now, s3 will reveal that Van resents Natalies leadership. She was always one of Lotties followers, and you can see how disspaointed she is when Lottie suceeds to Natalie. As an adult, Van manipulates Taissa so she could, 25 years later, give power back to Lottie. She doesn’t talk to any of them for decades, and she tries to resist the draw of going to the compound, and ends up immediatly falling back to Lotties leadership.
The finally, Natalie herself. For s1 and most of s2, we see that Natalie is still the hunter. She drives Misty into hunting down Travis’ theoretical murderer, she shows up to Misty’s house with the rifle, she takes shots at the blackmailers car, she verbal attacks Lisa’s mother.
None of these girls grew out of their dynamics with eachother, they just adapted.
UNTIL SEASON 2 FINALE
Natalie and Lottie swap roles! Natalie learns forgiveness and kindness. She does not want to hunt, she doesn’t want violence, she doesn’t want to drink. She commits fully to healing and pacifism. I don’t think she would have agreed to the hunt either way, but her dedication to leaving behind the wilderness for a holistic life is a 180 degree change. On the other hand, Lottie now becomes a hunter. She has shown she does need to be a leader, and commits to the violence of it.
And with that reversal, we are right back to winter of 1996. Lottie is back in charge, Natalie feels that she is othered, she is not an animal like the rest of the group. She has her head on straight. Taissa just does what Van wants. Shauna’s act of violence is the catalyst that makes resort to the hunt, Lottie is the reason it exists in the first place, and due to just complete bad luck, Natalie dies in place of someone else. She gets to redo her sacrifice of Javi. It’s like the past 25 years didn’t even happen, and they’re in the ‘what if’ stage.

thinking about how yellowjackets portrays sex & sexual situations gender & the… not unique but certainly rare way this show focuses on men versus women & I know we’re all tired of phrases like “male gaze” & “female gaze” but I think the show almost like… purposefully repurposes the male gaze from the perspective of its female characters.
jackie’s introduction pretty much is a sexual situation but it’s not a fun hot scene. it’s uncomfortable & awkward because it’s very clear jackie isn’t being pleasured. jeff just kind of looks like a tool. then later we get the sex scene between jeff & shauna & it’s different because both characters are into it but also it’s all about shauna, & the focus is mainly on her making jeff tell her that he loves her. it sort of reminds me of the scene in buffy the vampire slayer when buffy is feeling down because she just saw her most annoying ex living his best life so she demands spike tell her he loves her. it’s not a healthy situation. it’s… concerning & toxic. and even a bit manipulative & predatory to use someone that way.
and the other thing we know due to the focused shots of shauna looking at jackie is that this is not about jeff at all. he’s just the guy who happened to be between these two girls. when I first watched the show I disliked him but more & more I’m realizing… this is all about shauna & jackie. this entire relationship between shauna & jeff that turns into a marriage never has much to do with jeff himself at all. jeff is the epitome of literally just Some Guy.
anyway. I’m getting off track. I wanted to discuss jackie’s introduction versus her death. jackie being left to die because she had sex, on the surface seems like misogynistic writing. typical “female character is punished for sex” (not to harp on buffy again but..) trope. especially because the other girls are angry when they see the blood stain from her lost virginity.
but… the other girls aren’t angry at jackie because of sex. it’s because she’s “taken what didn’t belong to her.” & it’s interesting how none of the other girls care about or are invested in natalie & travis’ romance until this point. because it’s not about that. they objectify travis to the point of seeing him as literal food.
the framing of the jackie/travis sex scene is fascinating, the way it’s shot back & forth with the girls in the forest going feral. and the way in the end, travis is disoriented & confused & immediately following this the other girls begin sexual assaulting him & hunting him like an animal. like everything about travis & his arc, it’s such a subversion of the way female characters are so often treated in media.
and that brings me to travis & natalie & how they subvert gender roles. travis starts off seeming a bit sexist but the more we learn the more it’s clear he’s just an inexperienced teenager. he’s a virgin scared for his first time & he’s falling for the experienced bad girl who’s kinda scary. we literally always see that set up but with the shy inexperienced girl falling for the bad boy. even the way travis haunts the narrative & serves as part of natalie’s pain arc is reminiscent of the dead girlfriend trope. he is to natalie as jess from supernatural is to sam winchester. he’s fridged but the boy version. & that’s why he’s a babygirl to me <3
and like… we could talk all day about the pine cone in travis’ mouth & the sexual assault blood orgy scenes but let’s move on to the most functional couple of the entire show with some of the only sex scenes that actually seem like a fun sexy time where it’s just two people in love having sex
taissa & van! their conflict develops throughout the season as van is almost eaten by wolves because taissa is busy being possessed by the wood spirit & taissa’s frustration with van’s belief in something supernatural grows but… beyond that? they’re actually just super into each other. they are constantly talking about how gorgeous the other is, being all over each other, skinny dipping & doing more typically fun & romantic activities than all the other characters. & it’s 2 women
from shauna having sex with adam who ends up dead to whatever the fuck misty has going on with ben (not to mention adult! misty’s introductory scene where she manipulates a man into coming home with her by faking insecurities - or perhaps playing them up & using them, it’s unclear) it’s just totally fascinating to me the way this show subverts expectations with gender & sex

Chapter Twenty Seven - Looking Over My Shoulder
Chapter Twenty Seven - Looking Over My Shoulder
—-
2021-
“I’m getting really worried that you’re not calling me back.”
Misty has been trying to get in contact with Taissa ever since this forsaken car ride started. You’re heading up north, to the purple people, and all you can think about is how much money Walter must be spending on gas right now.
“Either of you. Don’t make me come looking for you,” she chuckles, but you can see her worried reflection in the mirror. “I already found Y/N!”
“Hi!” you shout over her shoulder, and Misty nods, as if Taissa could see it.
“Anyways. Call me back.”
She clicks a button and sets her phone down, sighing softly, her face twisted into worry. She turns to you and Walter.
“If Taissa and Shauna have both been kidnapped, I am going to be very, very annoyed.”
“I’m sure they’re just busy,” Walter comforts, looking back and forth between her and the road.
“Yeah, Misty. The last thing they would wanna do it worry you,” you say, pretending to itch your nose to hide your smile.
“They’re all lucky to have you,” Walter continues, nodding. “It’s pretty rare to have a friend who’s relentlessly got your back.”
Misty smiles.
“Thank you,” she says, a little awkwardly, adjusting her glasses and she faces forward again. You watch, silent, as Walter looks at her. His eyes not anywhere near the road.
“Here,” he says after a moment, digging through the center console and taking something out, putting it in Misty’s lap. “This is actually for you. While you wait for your friend’s imminent replies.”
She opens the box, and you look over her shoulder, finding rows and rows of cassettes marked and labeled neatly.
“You can choose the music for the rest of the trip, and I won’t complain at all.”
When you look at Misty’s reflection, she’s shocked. You can’t help but wonder when’s the last time she felt loved and appreciated like this.
“Well…” she says. “It all makes sense now.”
“Huh?” you say, her face quickly turning annoyed.
“What?” Walter asks.
“Why you sought me out,” she hisses. “Why you’re helping me- us. You certainly did your homework.”
“W-what are you talking about?”
“You can drop the whole thing now, okay? You’re one of those Yellowjackets obsessives.”
You gasp and hit the back of his seat. “Walter!”
“And I’m honored that I seem to be your favorite Yellowjacket. But, I am not gonna tell you anything about what happened out there. So, you can just drop us off at the next town.”
“So much for a free vacation,” you mutter, and Misty gestures towards you, nodding, glaring at Walter.
“Woah, woah. That is not what’s happening here. It’s like I told you. I sought you out from Citizen Detective because I wanted to work with the brilliant, investigative mind that is Agent AfricanGrey. And, because you dropped a Sweeney Todd reference in one of your posts. I-I don’t care. Um, no offense. Because I’m sure it was a significant trauma, but… I don’t care that you’re a Yellowjacket. That either of you are. That was like 30 years ago,” he shrugs.
“Twenty-five,” Misty whispers.
“And, that’s the least interesting thing about you.”
“So, you just… happen… to love musicals?” she says after a moment, flipping through the cassettes, a little more defensive now, but you can still tell she’s still a little flustered. “And it has nothing to do with me?”
“Yep.”
“Well, I don’t really care about musicals. Or what we play.”
“Oh,” Walker shrugs, leaning over and grabbing one. “So then you won’t be bothered if I put on…” he shows her the label.
“Oh, let’s tell the story of Cinderella, except every characters a train? Ugh, enough already,” she says, and puts in her own choice.
She sends him one final glare.
“People of Europe! I send you the Rainbow of Argentina.”
And you swear you’ve heard this song before, but you can’t seem to remember where.

1996-
After Y/N leaves, her words in the air, Natalie slowly pulls on her clothes. Her arms ache from being shoved into the cold water, from banging the axe through the ice so many times she thought her arm would just be stuck in the motion forever. Then… trying to hold on. And failing.
She can hear the door open, a shuffle that sounds distinctively panicked, and she can’t help but bitterly think that, of course, Lottie has brought something back. Not her. Not when she’s been trying so hard.
She steps outside, still zipping up her jacket, only the find the girls clustered around a frozen Lottie. She’s still alive, but her face is twisted into pain, her palm is cut, and she’s turning blue.
No food in sight. But Natalie can’t even bring herself to care.
“Get her back here,” she says, her voice hoarse. Y/N turns around from where she was kneeling in front of Lottie. “We can get her to the tub.”
Y/N looks at her for a moment longer before nodding, getting to her feet, dragging Lottie up with her.
“Come on, let’s get her back there,” Shauna encourages, and Natalie just watches as they all practically drag Lottie to the back, help her get undressed, take a small step into the still-hot tub.
“It’s gonna get better,” Nat says, because she knows the cold Lottie’s feeling right now. She looks up towards Y/N, in the doorway, Lottie’s clothes bundled up in her hands.
Mari and Akilah wait behind her, anxiously looking in on Lottie, and after a moment, Y/N takes a step back.
“Let them have a minute,” she says to Lottie’s followers, and Nat heard the door click shut as she grabs a strip of cloth to wrap around Lottie’s bleeding palm.
She sits at the stool next to the tub, and Lottie holds her hand out, the blood mostly washed away by now.
It’s hard to find her voice. But she’s changed in the wilderness. She’s always been able to speak her mind, call out someone on their shit, but it’s hard to admit that she was the stupid one.
And if they’re going to survive out here, at least for a little longer, they all need to change. And it seems stupid, but they need to be a team.
“This is all my fault.” She wraps the cloth around her cut. “I’m really sorry.”
“Good game,” Lottie says, still shaking slightly. “You fucking loser,” she smiles.
“You talking shit?” Natalie can’t help but laugh, shaking her head. “You little bitch. You ended up with nil. Same as me.”
She lets Lottie’s hand fall, the bandage wrapped tightly around her palm.
“But, fine.”
She sticks out her hand. “Good game.”
Lottie looks up at her and grabs her hand.

These nights, the simple ones, when you can just sit next to the fire and rest your head on Natalie’s shoulder are the easiest.
Doing nothing never hurt anyone.
“Nat,” you murmur, and the cabin is quiet enough that even your whisper seems too loud. “You know… you know that it’s not all on you, right? Just ‘cause you’re the best shot and shit? I… I just want you to know that it’s okay if you’re, like, not the best, I guess.”
“Yeah,” she whispers after a moment. “I know.”
“Okay,” you murmur, not sure if you believe her, too tired to pry.
“We’re a team.”
You lift your head up and look at her, and after a moment, she looks away from the fire. Her eyes soften and she smiles at you the way she always does. The way that makes you feel like the entire world is on fire, except for you and her.
You lean forward and kiss her softly, still scared from seeing her in the water, still so inexplicably intwined with her.
You smile against her lips.
The door slams open, too many footsteps, and swears, sounds of disbelief all spill from the girls.
“No. That’s impossible.” You look over at Shauna, and she’s staring at the door.
And when you turn, Javi stands in the doorway like like a scared deer, his eyes wide, wrapped in a blanket, his lips chapped and slightly blue.
“Javi,” you breathe, as everyone gathers around him.
Travis steps forward, and you share a look with Natalie.
“How the hell are you alive?” Travis asks, before bringing his brother into a tight hug.
How is he alive? How did he survive?
You see the look in his eyes.
What did he survive?
When Travis pulls away, Javi doesn’t speak, just stares at him- through him- unmoving.
“Javi,” Travis says softly. “Hey. It’s me. It’s your brother.”
When Javi doesn’t speak, and no one else does, Travis looks away from his brother and towards you and Natalie. You look away, and she stands up, walking to the other side of the cabin, where the light of the fire can’t reach.
“This means Lottie was right,” Mari says, smiling brightly, newfound belief shining through her. “She’s the one who said Javi was alive.”
Lottie looks shocked and slightly horrified.
“Three cheers for Lottie!” Misty shouts. “Hip, hip-”
Everyone glares at her, and her smile falls and her voice trails off.
“Lottie knew he was alive,” Van pants, pointing towards where two people sit, “But Taissa knew where he was.”
“No,” Tai says, a frown on her face, knees pulled up to her chest. Van kneels in front of her.
“No, Taissa. You can’t deny it anymore,” she breathes. “There is something inside of you that is connected to all of this.”
She stares at Van, confused and scared, to Javi and Travis hugging again. Javi still just stares, not speaking, his eyes wide open.
He survived. The cold, the hunger.
But as he stares blankly forward you know something else happened in the woods.

thinking about the “i just need my best friend” scene in 1x03 which is so interesting to me but i rarely see it talked about. shauna shipman notoriously has very low emotional intelligence in a lot of areas lol but imo she kinda knocks it out of the park here. she starts off with the intention of comforting jackie (bringing blankets) but i think she realizes pretty quickly that this would probably just wound jackie’s pride even further. jackie is clearly feeling raw, vulnerable, lost, and useless. so what does shauna do? she reverses their roles and makes herself vulnerable: she sort-of half apologizes for siding with taissa, she gives jackie insight into her thought process, and most importantly, she tells jackie she’s scared and that she needs her.
(i like to imagine that “i just need my best friend right now” is something they’ve passed back and forth between them over the years, a code phrase, a trump card, an affirmation.)
and here, shauna is simplifying jackie’s world, making it smaller and less overwhelming. forget the plane, forget the death and injury, forget the poison ivy, forget waiting for rescue, there’s only one thing you need to worry about right now: i need you. given the context added later by jackie’s dying fantasy-dream, i think this must have been a relief. shauna needs her. and so jackie got to finally feel like she had a purpose, and she got to feel connected to shauna again. and it benefits shauna too! she must be feeling very disconnected from jackie because of the secrets and the resentment she’s harboring, and she’s probably feeling like every interaction with her is tainted, and i think being needy is one of the few “pure” ways left for shauna to feel genuinely connected to jackie.
in conclusion i think shauna let herself be vulnerable FOR jackie’s benefit and i think it was very astute of her to do that !

Reasons you should be watching Yellowjackets as a lesbian:
Let’s start with the obvious, shall we, the canon lesbian ship (VanTaissa). Which includes a masc/butch lesbian and a lesbian of color! Like we love to see the representation! Their relationship also feels authentic in a way rarely seen in media. Their scenes really shine with the underlying playfulness of young, first love.
Tumblr media
Did I mention they’re played by an openly nonbinary lesbian actor and a queer actress in the 1996 timeline and Taissa in 2021 is played by another queer actress! And the cast has been allowed a lot of involvement in making their characters stories even more authentic (though the show runners and writers already do an amazing job).

Speaking of their story, one of my favorite things about the show is that their relationship and queerness isn’t treated as an obstacle to overcome, as it is many times in media. In fact, relationship is really a source of joy and strength for both characters when they’re stranded in the wilderness. Also, it should be noted that both of the lesbian characters have well developed storylines and motivations beyond their relationship.
And in 2021 we learn that Taissa grew up to have a beautiful family with her wife (who isn’t Van) and get to watch her campaign for state senate as an out lesbian. Enter the internal conflict of wanting to root for Taissa’s marriage in 2021 while simultaneously wanting a decades spanning love story for Van and Taissa.
On the topic of Van, she’s one of the best representations of masc/gender nonconforming lesbians I’ve seen in my lifetime. The show allows her to be sweet and soft and emotionally vulnerable in a way that masc/butch lesbians are rarely allowed to be on screen. (I could go on about what that portrayal personally meant to me, but that’s a whole other thread)
Tumblr media
However, the show’s overarching queerness and exploration of lesbian identity goes far beyond the canon relationships. Jackie and Shauna are two best friends on the show who have an underlying (and very obvious) romantic tension to their friendship complete with longing glances and homoromantic friendship breakups.
Tumblr media
Let me put it this way, if you even remotely liked Jennifer’s Body, you will be head over heals for JackieShauna. And don’t even get me started on the visceral portrayal of Jackie’s comphet in the pilot (or do if you want a dissertation). And there’s also queer coding in so many other characters (stares at Lottie and her purple laced docs and Nat and her everything).
Also, I cannot stress enough how incredible this show is even beyond it’s queer elements! Like from the 90s vibes to the incredible writing to beautiful cinematography, it’s worth the watch. Like it’s a riveting psychological horror mystery that explores the brutalities of girlhood with heart and humor.
Did I mention Showtime renewed through season 3 before we even got a trailer for season 2, so we’re guaranteed at least two more seasons! (Not to mention Showtime has a long history of supporting lesbian and queer narratives)

my brain is COOKING from lottievan thoughts. skull overheating. anyways. van was WORSHIPPING the ground lottie walked on. van was pretty much the first Lottie Believer. van believed lottie predicted her near death experience and believed if she listened to lottie she wouldn't suffer that trauma. van kneeled in front of lottie. van sat in a circle with lottie and tuned into nature like lottie asked her to and talked about feeling ALIVE through that. van thought lottie's rituals are helping her girlfriend. and there's no way to tell what happened in between that and the moment they share as they reunite in modern timeline but here is van, having lost her mother to cancer fairly recently. here is van, with taissa back in her life because of the same thing lottie helped with in the wilderness. van, very likely addicted to opioids and keeping it a secret. van, living alone. lottie, asking for a higher dosage of her meds. lottie, living in a community she created, rarely having to be alone (lottie before their plane crash eating her meal alone by a long table, the only person there being a maid who brought her her pills) believing the thing she created is helping people. lottie with her broken confessions (can't go back) lottie with her rituals and prayers (please can this be enough)
