On February 29th, 1720, Ulrika Eleonora of Sweden abdicated the throne in favour of her husband, Frederick I.
She had succeeded her brother, Charles XII, upon his death as he'd never married or fathered any children. She would be the 3rd Queen Regnant in Swedish history, the two previous ones being Margaret I and Christina.
Ulrika Eleonora had wanted to have her husband as a co-monarch, like Mary II and William III had ruled together in England, but the Swedish Parliament refused. They did however, agree to accept him as sole monarch if she abdicated, which she did on the condition that she would be heir to the throne and become Queen Regnant again should her husband die before she did.

RE: Crown Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel: Carl XVI Gustaf was so against their relationship, it took them almost a decade to get his consent to their relationship and then marriage. But during that time he also tried really hard to get Victoria with other royals 💀💀 He failed and the Crown Princess couple are still together.
On the other hand king Harald of Norway was prevented from marrying his long time commoner girlfriend by his father when he was the crown prince and he gave his dad an ultimatum: he either got permission to marry the love of his life or he wouldn't marry at all and thus would end the Norwegian monarchy as he was the only heir. He's now very old but still married and it's one of the only royals with no cheating scandals 💀
Sometimes real life isn't as bleak as some people make it out to be.

I got to see the Swedish Cameo Parure in person this week. It is on display at the Vasa to Bernadotte, 1523 -1973 - 2023, exhibition at The Royal Palace in Stockholm, Sweden.

she says it herself. Kristina can’t be Wille’s mother and “boss”. in that one sad phone call in e3 she’s already saying “if i can’t handle it how are you meant to”. Wille also can’t be crown prince and Simon’s boyfriend. It’s hurting both of them, trying to put these lives together in a way where they don’t fit.
(what’s the point of all the foreshadowing if there’s no revolution? no abdication or general downfall of the monarchy? the broken crown? if it all stays the same and wille takes over wtf was the point?)

One thing that kiiinda took me out of the final episode of Young Royals was Wille’s speech to his mother in the car. I was sort of expecting him to talk about how their relationship could be better if she wasn’t his boss and how his mental health would be better if he could step back but instead it felt a bit like Lisa was just talking directly to the audience about how people don’t get to choose when there’s a monarchy - which I don’t think Wille has ever really been that bothered about before? Felt a bit on the nose I guess.

as someone who's both a staunch anti monarchist irl and yet is obsessed with fictional modern royalty stories, it is truly one of my greatest pleasures to know that they all end with the same conclusion: monarchies are unsustainable in the modern era and they're bad for everyone involved. and the happiest ending possible is freeing the royals from their shackles. bonus points if they abdicate for love. it's just so good. i eat it up every time.

the king
when i was doing some research for a historical wilmon fanfic at the royal library’s archive last year i found a short story called the king by martin andersen-nexö from 1914. it was a story of a king who no longer held any power, but was worshipped by his people who didn’t dare to criticize him.
“let him sit!”, the wise men of the country said. “he’s the unsound fantasies of the people, collected in one hand - it’s the cheapest option. and he is our only memory of the slavery of the past. the more he stands out, the more he brings attention to how far we’ve come.”
the king stayed on his throne, but he wasn’t allowed to speak. the people traveled from east and west to see him, and he had to sit nicely on the throne while the people looked at him. meanwhile, the people invented a road of light that would lead talented people to success, no matter their social class. but the king’s throne cast a shadow over the road of light, which paralyzed the entire country.
after some time, the king asked if no one was upset with him. the people didn’t dare to be mad at him, because he sat so nicely on his throne. finally, the king had had enough and his soul left his body, but his body remained sitting. once his soul was gone, nothing stopped him from sitting nicely. he sat there, deaf and blind, until humanity accidentally pushed his throne so that it fell over.
i love this story because in my opinion, it pinpoints some of the reasons as to why i think monarchs - both the real and fictional ones - shouldn’t exist. it’s fascinating how a story published in 1914 so perfectly describes the themes of a tv show from 2021. because this could have been a fabel about wilhelm, who is forced to sit nicely on his throne as tourist attraction and a symbol of the past, which in turn harms not only the people but also wilhelm himself. and if he continues to sit nicely, his soul will eventually leave his body, because it won’t be able to stand it any longer.

The Royal Order of the Seraphim was a Swedish order of chivalry created by Frederick I on February 23rd, 1748. This outfit, including the cape, dress, shoes, hat, and insignia, was worn by the then 2 year old Prince Gustav, the future Gustav III.

Well, to me the most "unrealistic" thing is not the diference in status. The Swedish is not the only Monarchy where the Crown Prince/Princess married a not Royal or high status person. The most unrealistic thing for me is the fact they are a same sex couple. I can't imagine any real monarchy allowing the Crown prince/ss even date a person of the same sex. That being said i also hope Wilmon are endgame and i'm gonna sue if they are not!!!!
