one of the things i love about young royals is that the s1 tagline being “love or duty” leads you to believe this is going to be like all of the other cliche royal/commoner modern romances where the journey ends with wilhelm realizing he can have both
but then the show is actually an interrogation of how the protagonist cannot maintain his role within the monarchy and have a healthy relationship because no one can be a fully realized individual within a hierarchical colonial institution AND coming into queerness is a stepping stone to the self realization that ultimately frees him AND it is actually the antagonist who gets trapped within the monarchy (while also losing love) proving that upholding the power of the ruling class is a narrative punishment instead of a reward… perfect show

I fucking love that young royals really highlights the fact that no one can fix you but you. They have Wille and Simon trying to work around the horrible things going on together, and it doesn't really work because the biggest problem is that Wille is suffering so much under what the are trying to push through. At the beginning of s3 they have the "as long as I have you" kind of mentality and we see how quickly that falls apart. Having each other is not enough, and it shouldn't be. Wille needs to leave the life that is destroying him. Having simon in that life made it better, but it still was not enough. Simon recognizes that at the end of s3e5. Wille thought that all he needed was Simon because he has been so horribly mistreated by every adult in his life that the moment he is shown some unconditional love, he clings to it. Because, let me remind you, this kid is 17 years old. The ending is so incredibly impactful because Wille is finally choosing himself and his happiness. Not Simon's, not his moms. His. And that is beautiful.

I’m so thankful that we have Young Royals, a show where the character being part of the LGBTQIA+ community is explicitly not the problem, but the system he’s born into.
I’m so thankful that we finally got a queer show where said character gets to escape the suffering and the debilitating system he’s forced into and gets to be with the person he chooses.
Too many stories about our community end in tragedy and sadness. We deserve happy endings too.

The writers of young royals have OUTDONE themselves. The way each character was left at a point that they got what they deserved, the way the suspense was built, the way emotion was overflowing in that last episode... Omg. Wilhelm spoke to the queen differently this time around in a much more calm and understanding way, and made THE choice, Simon.
The way this season tackled class and privilege, identity, mental health, politics, race, and sexuality. And most of all, I'm so so happy that these queer characters got a happy ending. Bravo young royals, du kommer alltid finnas i mitt hjärta❤️👑. Kudos to all the amazing actors who brought this story to life. Their performances were top notch as always.
