In the light of the window, reflected upon the vast ocean, Mari looks like a dying sun. She looks like the dust that is left behind when stars burn out; when they explode between the aether in bursts of life and fade into nothing. She looks like an end. A beginning.

She looks like a train, pulling into the station. Sunny is standing, between the platforms, between the tracks, and the doors are closing on the train. The train says, doors closing, doors closing, we will be leaving now, we have left already, and Sunny stands, tall and still, rooted in place as the train pulls away. Faster, faster, faster.

The train is leaving.

The train is turning the corner.

The train is gone.

(Or: Mari and Sunny through the years, growing older, growing younger, and still side by side through it all.)

Mac is clingy and codependent and overbearing and always in his space, but Dennis likes those things, too. He liked the check-ins and the peeled apples. He liked Mac there to catch him when he fell. The world was a safer place when he was around, because the world was their world and in their world Mac didn't judge Dennis, he adored him, warts and all, no makeup, literal or not, nothing but the raw, ugly little knot of Dennis's soul, bared on their couch as they did whatever they did, together. Mac's smiles are crooked and he throws his weight around like the world is his, so lacking of self-conscious Dennis can't decide if he's jealous or finds it objectively attractive. Mac's ride or die, Mac's always down for the scheme, Mac's there beside him, because it's more fun when he's there, because it's safer. They broke up once, they came back together. They broke up again, and this time, they remain broken.

Laying there on his bed, his hands crossed over his chest, staring at the ceiling, Dennis feels how much it hurts to be left.

A smart highlighter and artificial window are among Samsung’s latest C-Lab spinoffs

Samsung’s in-house incubator C-Lab has produced some of the more fascinating hardware devices in recent memory. Previous graduates have run the gamut from smart belts to augmented reality. The Samsung staff’s pet projects are not always the most practical, but they’re never not interesting.

Per usual, the latest batch of graduates from the 9.5-year-old incubator is a wide ranging group. The two that jump out immediately are Hyler and SunnyFive. The first is a “smart highlighter” that digitizes the text you draw over. That information is transferred onto a connected mobile device and saved into the easily searchable Hyler app.

SunnyFive is one of the more dystopian entries. The “window-shaped device” generates fake sunlight to provide vitamin D and all of the real benefits of the sun in basements and other windowless environments. Essentially a sun therapy lamp in the shape of a window, the  product promises a piece of the sun, without drawbacks like sunburns and skin damage.

Also on the list are Haxby, a study service that recommends help based on wrong workbook answers; UV exposure sensor RootSensor and 3D effects generator, Blockbuster. Samsung will help foster the startups with resources over a five-year (non-artificial) window.

In the car, after Guigino's. Mac bounces his leg up and down. Guigino's is normally it. It's the night, the night where they both pretend. The dinner, well. That's them. But after the dinner—on a normal night, they go home, like they always do, but they're full on good food and good wine and in that pleasant place of drunkenness where everything is just a little shinier. They've split a dessert, sugar still in their mouths. In the car they let their hands touch on the console between them. When they come back they walk shoulder-to-shoulder into the apartment, and there is where the pretending begin: Dennis always says something like, "I think I'm gonna take a shower, baby," and Mac says, "okay," and it's like Mac's room doesn't even exist, because he goes straight to Dennis's. He undresses, socks and boxer shorts, and relaxes on the bed, staring at the ceiling. He cracks the windows open just a little bit and listens to the sounds of the street below. Mac likes those sounds. It's not like Charlie's apartment, with the awful alley cat chorus, but the soundscape of Mac and Dennis's nicer place, the roll of tires on the street and the intermittent breeze. Then Dennis will come in the room—or if he didn't shower, though he usually did, they'd be together, talking to each other on their sides about the dinner they'd just had and whatever else they had experienced that day—and it would begin.

Tonight, though, Mac knows better than to suggest that. Dennis deflects the gang's invitation to head back to the bar after Guigino's, says he's tired, the food didn't settle well on his stomach Mac nods along with him, believes him. Mac wonders if the rest have figured it out, and there's really only two possibilities: they don't care or they're completely oblivious. Mac feels like it's as obvious as the two colognes he's put on, what this is, how this usually goes down. They've stopped asking why Mac always goes with Dennis, why Mac always rides shotgun, why Mac and Dennis have lived together since Dennis graduated. Oblivious or apathetic. Mac flips the tip of tie up and down. He doesn't know which one would be better.

Samsung to spin-off startup SunnyFive, maker of smart windows that generate artificial sunlight

Samsung Electronics announced that it will support a number of startups, including SunnyFive, created by Samsung employees as part of the company’s C-Lab Inside in-house incubation program.

SunnyFive is a window-shaped lighting device that produces artificial sunlight, allowing the user to enjoy the full spectrum of light produced by the sun’s natural passage through the sky during the day. Helps users synthesize vitamin D while they are indoors or in low-lit places without having to worry about skin aging or sunburn, and allows for brightness and color adjustment via the app.

The C-Lab spin-off program provides startups with the investment and business consulting needed to help them grow. Samsung also provides a five-year window during which employees who launch startups can return to their jobs if their endeavors prove unsuccessful, meaning that individuals can embark on their entrepreneurial projects without having to fear that they are risking their careers.
