Diana sits at a corner table, bathed in candlelight. The man opposite her is an imposing figure: tall, broad shouldered, well dressed. With a quiet nod he stands up, leaving her for the bar.
Amid the restaurant’s soft hum of gentle conversation, Diana opens a compact. She checks her reflection as another man fills the now empty seat at her table.
Diana hides her surprise with a smile. “47.”
He doesn’t respond. He looks the same, the same as he did in that olive grove almost a year ago. The same hard look is there too.
“I take it this means your answer is “yes”?” Diana remains as poised and self-assured as ever. “Or, a very dramatic “no”.”
She clicks the compact shut. 47 watches her, letting the seconds tick by almost uncomfortably long before responding.
“I haven’t decided yet.”
Diana’s companion returns from the bar, two drinks in hand, and sees 47 in his seat. “Hey, man.”
47 glances up for a brief moment before returning his attention to Diana. With an almost imperceptible sigh, Diana smiles sweetly, addressing the man.
“Can you give us a minute?”
Scowling, the man looks 47 up and down. He is about to protest, but there is something in Diana’s pointed smile.
“Sure.”
He walks back towards the bar. Unaffected, 47’s gaze remains on Diana.
“Interviewing for my replacement?”
Diana’s smile softens. “Never.”
The silence returns to the table. Mendoza seems eons ago, the sun, the wine, soft silk and red lips, being so close.
“How would this work?”
Diana frowns. “You and me?”
He doesn’t answer. Diana continues.
“I still have my contacts. You still have your skills, I’m sure.” Her grin turns mischievous. “But we wouldn’t have the back-up.”
“Did we ever?”
Diana chuckles softly. “I made a start.” She slides an envelope across the table, filled with instructions and coordinates. “If you want to follow.”
47 contemplates the man at the bar. “What about your friend?”
Diana’s gaze does not leave 47. “He’s not my friend.”

no because what's the reason for "No– no I'm not freaked out. It's just a... federal thing." and what was the reason for "Wait– you're saying you and me, we didn't have a moment?" and like how do you explain "He was my gay thing." and also

I love a lot of the BtVS f/f pairings for Buffy, but one I don't feel like I talk about enough is Cordelia/Buffy (Coffy).
Cordelia reads very much as Buffy's love interest. They bicker and they banter, but at the same time do seem to have a fascination with each other. On Buffy's first day at Sunnydale high, Cordelia immediately seeks out Buffy. They are constantly trying to one up each other, almost as if they're trying to impress each other. It's almost painfully obvious (at least to me) that they're crushing on each other, hard.
They are narrative foils, as well. Physically, Cordy has brown hair and Buffy is blonde, but the differences go much much deeper than that. Cordy's friends aren't really very supportive or very kind, whereas Buffy's friends are extremely loyal and supportive (for the most part).
In other ways they are mirrors of each other. Buffy starts out as the popular girl at school, until she finds out she is the Slayer (read: special powers and a role to play in the fight against evil), moves to Sunnydale (from LA), is no longer the popular girl but instead rather a misfit, joins a group of misfits (some with special powers), and fights evil. Cordelia is the popular girl at Sunnydale high, until she moves to LA (from Sunnydale), and isn't the popular girl anymore but instead a bit of a misfit, joins a group of other misfits (some with special powers), starts getting visions (special powers + a role to play in fighting evil), and starts fighting evil.
And there's certainly lesbian subtext between the two of them.
Cordelia mentions several times that "nobody really knows her", one time (if I recall correctly) in an actual closet! I think the subtext here is rapidly becoming text.

Hi, I love your analyses and your fics! 💕Especially that Eureka Seven AU man ngl it lives in my head and starts playing in my local theaters every other night at 2 AM, but *clears throat* I'm getting off topic lol :D do you have a bakudeku fic/authors rec list?
I'm honored you read the Eureka Seven one!
Good Bakudeku authors... the truth is, there are SO MANY. Just in general, and so many that are really, truly excellent. I have begun consuming more and more fic lately as I feel the itch of the subtext of what's happening in the manga rapidly becoming text and just plain consuming me, but many of the individual stories I've read can be GREAT as a story but perhaps not so great as a canon-faithful representation of Bakudeku - so I'm not entirely sure what kind of Bakudeku you're asking for ("fun and good story" versus "horny vignette" versus "that's totally Katsuki and Izuku.")
Also, like, for several of these authors, their Bakudeku portrayals evolved as the series progressed and we all learned more about these characters and the varnish of what BNHA pretends to be (superhero stock shonen!) peeled off to show what it actually is (The newest generation of something that should never have been domesticated now outgrowing the limits of the modern genre.) This is always good to keep in mind when looking at the dates of each work published.
Um, it's hard to pick just a few, and even harder when there's no specific direction about what TYPE. So here's a scattershot off the top of my head:
Me. My work. Read Mundane Crimes, Public Displays of Affection and I Want What I Don't Deserve. Those actually have some substance to them. The rest are kind of whatever, but you may still find them fun.
Kickass AUs and All-Rounders
chymerical is my favorite author on this list. They can do anything. I care about sports now because of chymerical. There's your fuckin' fadeaway.
young_crone - some are truly Bakudeku and some are just great stories that are using familiar names. Read all of 'em.
SmartiMart - Variant Edition is a sweeping epic and fascinating enough that the Bakudeku isn't actually its primary draw for me. Please also read Where in the World is Marigold? It's not Bakudeku, but I love it. SmartiMart is clever, inventive, and sometimes so much of a romantic that it makes me go, "woah, now! That's a bit much!" but in the best way.
iphido - this author has only one work for bakudeku, and it is worth it.
nicc - bite-sized sweet scenes, though many are very NSFW. Consistently excellent.
pikahlua - Dragonheart. this is your kick in the pants to finish those scenes, Pika.
Romantic Comedies
qodqodqod - Cringe comedy where love always, always, always prevails and bakudeku can't out-stupid their way out of it. Great job of not making the miscommunication, or lack of communication, a bore or overdone past what it needs to be.
heartsinhay - the cringe comedies are named that for a reason.
Darker Stuff
rironomind - apparently published something new earlier this year and I missed it??? DAMN! Existential, experimental, melancholic, high concept, fantastic. Rom's work is mostly in this category because it tends to throw curveballs at the reader. This is the category that just felt the most right by its vibes.
bkdkink - Lemonhead specifically.
Roadtripwithlucifer (read their new stuff too) - horny, but focused and full, full, full of ennui and anger and love and grief. It's the confidence of handling the last four that makes these works shine.
Surveycorpsjean - hit or miss for me personally, but always well done.
majjale - always great work; sometimes hit-or-miss for me personally on the bakudeku.

thinking about if they actually made that modern buffyverse show that they’ve been talking about for like 5 years that all the news outlets were wrongly labelling as a “reboot”. more specifically thinking about the implications of a trans slayer
she’s not out yet. she maybe doesn’t even kNOW yet. but she feels herself activate, she gets the dreams, she has a watcher come to find her and teach her but… they don’t even know they’re looking for her. maybe part of the first season is the watcher thinking that her cis friend is the slayer, trying to train her to no avail only to reveal… no. it’s not her friend. it’s… michael or josh or nick or whatever her deadname would be. and she realises she’s trans.
being the slayer is already a metaphor for growing up and finding yourself, and has already been compared to coming out or being queer multiple times in the show. the idea of a young trans girl navigating her identity through metaphor, and subsequently presenting being trans as, yes, difficult and life-inhibiting in some ways, but also quite literally a superpower AND something valid and real and recognised by ancient spiritual fate prophecy stuff, would be so fucking awesome to see.
personally I think that in the words of giles the subtext should rapidly become text

sydcarmy post b/c this scene is effing amazing
started with sydcarmy with syd coming in, ending with sydcarmy with carmy coming in
these confessional sydcarmy scenes are the heart of the show, honestly, and this one is beautiful. the music is unobtrusive, it’s them in a kitchen in full control, and one of them (syd this time) is working through trauma. when she says “look where it got me” and he answers with “heard”? beautifully understated and of course, look where it got her indeed -- to a kitchen that, while it has its problems, is helmed by a chef she looks up to, where she has both freedom and responsibility, where others (are starting to) respect her, and where she can really grow and learn and be inspired
and bang the head chef but that's neither here nor there
"can you help me strain the stock? "yes, chef, of course" *whispered* "thanks" i am Feral over this conversation and how soft and wonderful it is
also the MOTHEREFFING LOVE SONG IN THE BACKGROUND??? those lyrics?? the music's so soft and unobtrusive and then when he's helping her it gets louder and the lyric is "this is what love is for"??? there are so many things that can't be accidents in TV, but music is the top of the list. sound editing, licensing, etc -- it's a complex endeavor, someone has to okay every decision AND the finished product. it's there because they wanted it to be there, full stop. the subtext is rapidly becoming text
syd wakes up at the start with nightmares. she wakes up after her victory + confessional with inspiration. need i say more?

you drive me home (we pretend we don’t know)
words: 70k | rated: T
buffy/cordelia, buffy/faith
Cordelia nods. Kisses Buffy again. But one benefit, if the world ends? Buffy doesn’t have to figure out what the hell this is.
(In which Cordelia and Buffy are really bad at being just friends. Buffy and Faith are also really bad at being just friends. And everything is going just fine.)
hi. this is the coffy fic i've been working on for one million years. it is so near and dear to me. a rewrite of season 3 where coffy gets to keep being important narratively after mid-season, and fuffy's subtext rapidly becomes text, and we process buffy's s2 trauma, as a treat. a fic about queer feelings and sunnydale high school.
posted for coffy appreciation week 2023, day 7: free choice :)
