More Obscure Facts About Fallout 4 Companions*
*Now with slightly more unverified psychoanalysis!
X6 gets anxious at the thought of large crowds.
Codsworth likes to imagine being a father to a little robot son. Hang on, buddy, I’m getting my six hundred pounds of scrap metal out of storage.
MacCready seems to have lived in Bigtown for some period of time, or at least visited enough to have memories there. Also, the Lone Wanderer (or one of their companions/Sidney) told him about their encounter with Button Gwinnett.
Despite having little empathy for the people of the Commonwealth, Cait often becomes distressed imagining the victims of the bombs, especially when children are involved.
Danse believes that pre-war healthcare and scientific research should have been publicly owned. He hates corporations in general, especially Vault-Tec.
Nick not only loves poetry, but he’s also able to recite several famous poems such as Ozymandias and The Raven. He’s very sad to see destroyed books at the library.
It’s been confirmed by a non-Deacon source that he spent a month as a ghoul. (Somehow.) NPC dialogue implies that he was telling the truth about disguising himself as a woman for awhile, too.
Apparently Piper was a complete nightmare as a child. She would steal her dad’s pistol, shoot the combat inhibitors off robots, and let them run through town.
There’s some sort of debate in the fandom about whether Curie was originally a Miss Nanny or a Mister Handy, but she confirms in dialogue that she was a Miss Nanny.
Nick can feel pain! :(!
Deacon likes molerats, hates killing them, and wishes he could domesticate them. He should visit Sloan.
A probably incomplete list of things Danse wishes he could do: Fishing, watching a movie, playing/watching baseball, seeing a show at an amphitheater, bowling, shopping
TBH I was wrong on the last post. Preston doesn’t like swimming, his dialogue is tagged as sarcastic there. In my defense, he’s got depression and tends to speak flatly. That means that not one single companion likes to swim, except Strong who doesn’t care.
Despite maintaining there’s a difference between robots and synths, Nick believes in robot rights and often encourages robots not to think of themselves as slaves.

Fallout 4 - Companion React - Sole hugging them (non-romanced)
Cait - "What the hell ya think ya playin at?" Cait isn't one for physical affection, even with the closest of friends. She would try to wiggle out but with Sole's death grip on her she decides to wait until they're done. She's as stiff as cardboard and really wishes Sole would get off her. However, much like Cait, Sole isn't a hug person. She wonders what happened to make Sole hug her.
Codsworth - "Ah bringing it in, eh, Sole?" Just like he was before the war, Codsworth is always up for a hug. Especially from Sole. It's kind of awkward with all his metal limbs but whatever Sole finds comfort in! He remembers the times where they had hugged him pre-war. Like when Shaun was born, on New Years, when the bombs fell...
Curie - "Aw! A hug! How pleasant!" Curie would never turn down a hug. From settler to super mutant, if someone is in need of a hug, then Curie is there wrapping her short arms around them. She is warm and smells like flowers, more specifically roses. Curie cherishes every second she has with her oldest friend in her arms, her smile never once faltering.
Danse - "Uh soldier? Everything alright?" Danse would be incredibly awkward. He never has really had much physical contact before so he doesn't know what to do with his arms. Rest them on Sole's waist? Wrap them around their torso? Hold their head? He's happy to help if Sole is in need of a hug but our awkward bean has been treated as a soldier by everyone his whole life, not a friend.
Deacon - "Aw buddy! Need a Deacon hug? We all need a Deacon hug once in a while!" His stupid jokes would make Sole smile as his strong arms wrap around their entire body. He would even jokingly squeeze tighter on Sole and spin them around making them roll their eyes and laugh. Behind all the smiles, jokes and iconic sunglasses, he knows what Sole has been through and maybe they are finally starting to process their past. He knows all too well how hard it is to get over your past and losing a loved one. Whatever he can do to help he will do it, while telling his awful jokes and anecdotes.
Dogmeat - "Woof! Woof bark!" Our good boy loves a good hug. Or any kind of attention really. A nice scratch behind the ears would go amiss either...
Hancock - "You doing good, Sole? Look if you need anything, my chem box is always open to you." The mayor of Goodneighbor always has time for Sole but his comforting techniques aren't always that effective. If Sole is looking to get high and forget about the world for a bit, Hancock is the first to jump in and help but physical comfort is not something he's used to. He will wrap his arms around Sole but will second guess every motion and movement he does. He, like many other people in this new world, is not used to hugs.
MacCready - "Woah, uh hi boss. You good?" He's a mercenary, what else do I have to say? He's awkward and stiff and he doesn't know how to comfort people. He remembers a few things he did for Duncan back in the Capital Wasteland so he gives Sole a few head pats, backrubs and a couple 'there there's. He just lets Sole sink into his arms. They've been through so much and he could never repay them for everything they've done for him, but that doesn't mean he won't try. Starting with a nice, 'comforting' hug.
Nick - "Aw come here. Why don't you tell this old bucket of bolts what's up? " Because of his line in work, comforting people is a skill that Nick has. He holds Sole in his arms with his trench coat engulfing them. The smell of coffee, cigarettes and paper fill Sole's nostrils as they snuggle into the old synth. Nick doesn't understand why anyone would want to hug an old, beaten up Institute reject but he's happy nonetheless to hold Sole whenever they need it.
Piper - "Oh Blue! C'mere! Hm better now?" Piper is always happy to give Sole a hug. She knows how stressed Sole can get. She'd feel the same if she had Sole's responsibilities. She enjoys the hug more than she cares to admit. Not many people want to be within five feet of 'Diamond City's Nosy Reporter' let alone hug her. Any chance she can get the big and tough Sole Survivor to break down their rules and be vulnerable, she will take it. She's a firm believer that mental health, even in this new apocalyptic age, should be a priority.
Preston - "General! Is everything okay? We will stay here as long as you need." Preston is such a sweetheart. He'd do anything for the minutemen, especially for its general. He'd happily hold Sole for hours. He knows all too well what the Commonwealth can do to a person and he's a minuteman after all, helping people is his middle name. It's the least he can do for Sole. They saved him. Its his turn to save them...
Strong - "What is human doing? Get off! Strong confused..." When Strong says get off, you probably should. Unless you want your back to be in two pieces...
X6-88 - "Sole, what are you doing? Isn't this what your friends are for?" He doesn't really understand the concept of hugs or anything emotional or caring actually. It took him ages to understand the concept of giving someone a present on their birthday. If Sole needs a hug from X6 then they are going to have to jump on him and hang on for dear life. However, if X6 thinks the hug will help Sole perform better in battle then he will stay there for as long as is required. Not for a sentimental reason of course, simply so Sole would be a more effective fighter.

A few Strong thoughts: I think he's smart enough to figure out figurative language. And when he does, he's also a massive fan of sarcasm. He hears a settler talking about how much they hate supermutants, how they're no-good stupid monsters that smell awful, sneak up behind them and say, “Flattery will get you nowhere with supermutants.”
Yessssss!
I don’t think Strong is actually Stupid and I personally take supermutants’ talking pattern as just a way they talk. Maybe they aren’t extremely intelligent but they obviously have a clear idea of actions and consequences and a general sense of “human made us and they need to pay”.
In addition, it’s implied that Strong is too civilised for his kind? Which leads me to believe he’s actually smart enough to understand a lot of things, case in point, figurative language. I don’t know how others think about this but I understand his way of pronouncing MacCready as he physically cannot pronounce it any other way. He clearly makes a point that “go with human” and “travel with human” are two very different things etc and uhhh I also view his interaction with Deacon (yeah sorry this guy again I’m admittedly very abnormal about him) as Deacon chooses to tease him by saying something he could understand. So yeah, I think Strong understands sarcasm just fine most of the time!
Sorry for the rambling I just think your hc is *chefs kiss* and yes he uses sarcasm. He might constant yells smashy smashy but ykw that is fun. Anyways thanks for the ask and double thanks for sending it my way!

Hmmm maybe companions react to a really jokey, constantly upbeat Sole? Kinda like Deacon ig lol
Yes, I love this idea! Thanks for requesting!
Cait - "Why ya always so happy? There's nothing in this shit tip to be smilin' about." While Cait can appreciate a good joke here and there, Sole's constant happiness can really get on her nerves. In her mind unless there's a dead group of raiders in front of you or a huge pile of alcohol, there's nothing to be happy about. She can't comprehend how that stupid smile never leaves Sole's face.
Codsworth - "Glad to see that the Commonwealth hasn't dampened your spirit, Sole!" Codsworth is beyond happy that the ruthlessness of the Commonwealth hasn't affected Sole's attitude or personality. He feared that when they left the vault that they'd become hardened or cold or even worse, a raider. Its certainly an easier life. But as time went on he realised that he should have had more faith in Sole. No matter what happens he knows that Sole will always be that person who always offered strangers a kind smile before the war.
Curie - "Your attitude is just amazing! I am so lucky to know someone so, what is the word? Upbeat? Yes?" Curie loves how happy Sole is! They never fail to make her laugh with their witty jokes, even if sometimes she doesn't quite get them. Curie and Sole are a pleasant pair to be around and they're known for their beaming optimism and bright personalities.
Danse - "Your constant state of eudemonia is refreshing, but perhaps toning down the jokes would be more professional, soldier" Danse likes a good joke or funny anecdote, but in private. Around Elder Maxson, citizens and other soldiers, especially squires, Danse likes to keep up him professional persona to ensure he completes his mission. He likes to set a good example for the squires, the future of the Brotherhood, and he finds Sole's constant witty remarks to be distracting and irrelevant. He does find Sole's optimism to be inspiring though.
Deacon - *Whole lot of uncontrollable laughter* When they get started, they don't stop. These two are a nightmare pair if you ever want to get anything done with them. Fits of laughter are a given with Sole and Deacon. Agents of the Railroad either roll their eyes or chuckle silently to themselves as this comedic duo enters HQ. Deacon is glad to find someone who can match his humour, even one up him sometimes. He believes that life is too short to be wasted worrying about everything every other wastelander worries about. He's here for a good time, not a long time and he's glad to share that same outlook with Sole. However, when the time comes these two can be serious and have a heart to heart conversation. This just strengthens their friendship with one another and they both know what they mean to the other.
Dogmeat - "Bark bark!" Dogmeat loves how Sole is always happy and ready to play! Sole always has a dog treat on them with a smile. He doesn't quite understand the jokes though..
Hancock - "That damn smile just makes my day." Hancock's a flirt. Whether he means it or not, that's another story. He loves to comment on Sole's trademark smile as it only makes them smile more. He finds it refreshing to see someone so happy in this world of misery. The only way he can be that happy is when he's full of alcohol or his lungs filled with smoke or jet. He actually admires Sole's constant happiness and when he's had a few drinks, Sole's jokes are suddenly a whole lot funnier.
MacCready - "Do you, you know, ever stop smiling?" Our dear old MacCready is slightly confused by Sole. Why are they always so happy? Why do they smile all the time? Is their face stuck that way? He always chuckles as when he has that last question in his mind, he recalls the silly little story he always told Duncan, 'If the wind changes, your face will be stuck like that!' At times he finds it slightly annoying, they could be surrounded by raiders or super mutants and Sole would be cracking jokes like there's no tomorrow. Part of the reason he is so annoyed by this is because he's jealous. Sole and MacCready alike, they've both had horrific stuff happen to them and while Sole can carry on with a smile on their face, MacCready is struggling to get from one day to the next.
Nick - "Your attitude about the ol' Wealth if refreshing, a few folks 'round here could learn a thing or two from you." Nick loves being around Sole. Their cheerful personality is infectious and a few smiles and jokes really lighten up the mood. In Nick's line of work he sees a lot of shit and hears terrible, terrible stories. And while there is a time and a place for jokes, Sole always manages to brighten the day of Nick and whatever client he has in the agency at the time. The pair always end up having a 'joke off'. Nick is smart and quick witted, but so is Sole. They fight to always have the last word, usually earning an eye roll from Ellie.
Piper - "Oh Blue! Seriously stop! Nat is going to prefer you over me!" Piper and Nat love Sole and their jokes. They are a pretty light hearted family and Sole fitted right in with them. Piper finds Sole a joy to be around as they are so different from everyone else in the Commonwealth. They always have something funny to say and their smile is enough to turn Piper's bad day into a good one. The only time Piper ever dislikes Sole's upbeat personality is when a serious situation arises and Sole struggles to keep their wit under control.
Preston - "General, your wit never ceases to impress me. Your positive outlook is really inspiring for the soldiers." Preston hasn't got one bad thing to say about his general. Whether its because he's loyal to the cause and its leader or because he genuinely hasn't got a problem with Sole is another story. But nevertheless Preston can see how it impacts the soldiers and if Sole has a smile on their face then nine times out of ten, the soldiers will have one too. The Castle is such a lovely environment to be in, everyone's all so happy. All thanks to their general.
Strong - "Why is puny human always so happy? Smashing makes Strong happy. Only smashing!" Strong, like with most things, doesn't really understand why Sole is always so cheery. The only thing that makes him happy is smashing things to smithereens. How Sole can be happy when they are not smashing things is a mystery to our big, green giant.
X6-88 - "Sole, I understand that you use humour as a coping mechanism but if you would be so kind as to stop. That would be fantastic." X6 is a professional. So professional in fact that he doesn't believe that he should talk to anyone unless its to do with a mission. Sole's relentless jokes and witty remarks are childish in X6's eyes and therefore unprofessional. He finds them unnecessary and they have nothing to do with the task at hand. He does find it fascinating how after everything they have been through that they can still walk this Earth with a smile on their face every single day.
