Ep. 12 - Everywhere All Around The World
Hello my beloved fellow souls,
welcome back to Danbi’s Room, your weekly dose of safe space. Go grab a cup of something warm and get yourself cosy.
I hope you had a nice week and a happy Spring/Autumn Equinox! Those of us who are in the North are finally being kissed by the Sun again, while those of us who are in the South are finally breathing the lovely autumnal crispy air again.
Some time ago I had a blast…I learnt something new in the morning and I found it extremely interesting and peculiar - yet, it didn’t hit me until night how oddly mind-blowing small details that again, we take for granted, can be so full of richness and marvelous complexity.
What does your body do when you move a lock of your hair away from your eyes?
How does your body feel when your fingers move to hold a cup of green tea?
Why do you move exactly those parts of your body picking up a a lily of the valley in a field?
Maybe it might seem almost an oxymoron, but all these new things I’m noticing and finding, they do fill my soul even more - but I definitely don’t feel more frantic than before.
On the contrary, I think I finally found peace.
Clearly, everything’s a cycle and there are always highs and lows, but once you’ve got the hang of it, of peacefully enjoying the storm, seeking darkness and laughter…well then there’s home.
Obviously that doesn’t mean it becomes easy.
It’s still difficult, perhaps even more, because you have to take care of your home’s hearth and bring wood to feed it.
Futile hay won’t do.
Just as obviously there’s a certain degree of satisfaction to it.
You embrace yourself, and when you are the first of your kind, the restraint of expectations falls down in debris.
The debris of all the barriers and boulders we carried on our backs, made of hesitation and loss of passion, apathy.
Death.
Feeling as inconsequential as a speck of dust, between a vast desert and the bluest ocean.
The point is always that in that chasm of darkness, inside, deep within, there’s us.
Ourselves.
Seeds are planted in darkness.
Every moment becomes eternity.
In the eternal circle, the past was, honestly, the best.
But the best is what comes is what comes next.
What’s reflected in your spirit?
I see deep mellow black ponds everyday and it’s always a tender feeling to rest in there.
Some seasons ago, I danced with golden honey eyes, clear like an amber jewel adorning the soft skin of an ancient queen. It’s weird - they’re the deepest yet the stillest, like precious fabric. They reminded me of some eyes I will definitely swim into in the future.
Then I recognized that velvety green I like so much, but it was just for a few minutes.
The colour of Nature is always outstanding. It’s our Home and Mother, after all.
And then…something I had believed to be a foresty emerald dark green - and at night, with dim lights, it is - turned out to be a glorious feast of strong blues jagged by strips of land the colour of autumn leaves covering the mountains.
The Nereids must have painted that, I find no other explanation.
But, with all due respect, I will paint something even grander, as soon as my heart will take me to his ocean, waters of the other side that I’ve never seen before.
Eyes are quite evident no?
Even so, we don’t always actually look at them, despite being one of the most mainstream parts of our body, superficially vaunted or not, eyes still hold some kind of inexplicable charm.
And I’m very sensitive to colours.
Looking at all those hues made me feel like I was in a Wes Anderson movie.
In any case this is not much about eyes, and not even that much about colours.
It’s more about the so-called “ordinary” details, small small things, more fragile and ephemeral than a dandelion petal.
Sure, it’s a delicate topic - it’s easy to fall into a cringey cliché - but at the end of the day is that even a problem?
Sometimes it really is about small and trivial and cliché things.
A quick look, so intimate, with a person you’ve known for ages, a glimpse of silent conversation nobody else notices.
Memories you still have to live.
Seeing each other’s presence listening to our own breath.
An almost imperceptible presence of a hand rested between your shoulder blades.
Sitting elbow to elbow on a light wooden floor.
A house full of joy you run to at 9.20AM.
Finally being able to actually see that the sky is Prussian blue and and neon fuchsia and smiling.
Lately these have been the things I remember, fondly.
Actually I believe them to be extremely powerful.
This is a way of its own to perceive the world.
In fact, my paintings have followed.
Recently they asked me to be small and to open windows and doors to let people look at details, visions, fragments of dreams. And to add matter, so that they can manifest their layers. To expand in space together, move through a body.
Who am I to refuse?
Images talk and demand.
Dimensions wait to receive a body.
I try to do my best to listen.
Listening is crucial.
Listening deeply, carefully, attentively.
Not necessarily with your ears.
But we’ll have the opportunity to delve into this more in the future.
Just remember to listen to yourself, you deserve it.
As unrelated as it might seem (it’s not, it just represents another way of seeing these matters), today I must absoloutely recommend District 9 by Stray Kids. Words of love are never enough, so I will just say happy 6th anniversary!
I hope you enjoyed this episode and that you have a beautiful week ahead of you!
I’ll see you in the next one, big hug!
With love, yours,
Danbi

NEVERMORE; AN ANNOTATION chapter 3 (no place for you here)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Read Nevermore | Annotations Masterlist | Nevermore Masterlist
---
Summary
Picking up right where the previous chapter left off, we open with Minho standing in front of a blackboard, having just written the words I AM NOT on it. He hears Chan's voice in his head in place of the machine, asking him to go and find Han, who refuses to wake up. Minho does so, only for the two of them to realise Chan in turn is also in trouble.
Tumblr media
They find him in the same room he had sat down in in the last scene, and force him to withdraw from the machine. Chan explains that he has woken all of the occupants of District 9 from their stupour, and Minho reasons that they should now go and find the rest of their group.
From Hyunjin's POV, he, Changbin and Felix are fighting through a crowd gathered in a large mess hall, as Changbin is sure he's seen Seungmin in the crowd. Felix slips out of Hyunjin's grip and so they split up; Hyunjin finds him cornered by a crazed man, who tells them several nonsensical things that he claims to have 'seen', including that 'I see the men that own this place coming in thirty seven minutes and fourteen seconds'.
They find their group at the edge of the crowd, just in time for Seungmin to appear claiming he has found a bus and a gate. The gate is locked and the glass dome covers it; Felix remembers that the man he'd been cornered by had said 'I see you breaking the glass and opening the gate'.
Tumblr media
Chan tells them to get into the bus, and crashes it through the gate. Hyunjin hits his head in the crash. They come out the other side into a misty, dead forest in the mid-afternoon, and watch as the denizens of District 9 run past the bus, down the road to freedom.
Tumblr media
Canon Content
As a part 2 to last chapter, this one leans heavily on District 9 and its associated content.
Minho writing on the blackboard from the I Am Not trailer. The particular piece of grafitti he notes on it, 'this will not end until we raise up this bow', can be read on the board in the Prequel video
Han on the stage. The mention of him turning around, the light surrounding him like a halo, is pulled from a specific shot in the I Am Not trailer.
Tumblr media
The man that corners Felix in the mess hall states that 'the tigers are in the jungle', referencing Miroh, which is described in both its music video and lyrics, as the 'city jungle'.
Tumblr media
The bus and the act of crashing it through the wall, the forest that they appear in on the other side, is a sequence of events seen in the District 9 music video.
Tumblr media
Hyunjin calls Changbin a walrus, a reference to the 3racha episode of Chan's Room and the song 'Can't Live Without Changbin'
Characters
For the first time, Minho and Hyunjin take the lead in this chapter, giving insight and depth to their characters in a period of aftermath and transition to the next phase of the story. Neither are important characters until much later on, so using this portion of the story, where there isn't quite so much immediate plot being delivered to the more forefront characters, to introduce them is important.
Minho, like Chan, is immediately drawn as older and wiser, a leader in the group. It is notable that he is the one that we see Chan turn to most immediately when Han needs help, and he is the one that Han responds to when even Chan couldn't get through to him. In the end, Minho also ends up being the one to save Chan, though he does both these things with a measure of aplomb and indifference, shining a light on his unique personality.
Hyunjin, in contrast, is very much disturbed by this strange world and the large, messy crowd he first finds himself surrounded by. We see Changbin leading him, and in turn him leading Felix, creating an implied level of hierarchy in their relationships and further reinforcing the things we've already learnt about Felix and Changbin's personalities.
Hyunjin, in fact, serves as a window through which to view most of the other boys; he describes Seungmin as crafty and clever, Changbin as an unstoppable force he relies on, Minho as pragmatic. Most importantly, right at the end, he is the first one to note that Chan is hiding something from them, a fact he will continue stewing on though we don't see his POV again in this arc - much later, in Miroh, this will be the catalyst for Chan admitting that the company are not continuing with Stray Kids if they ever go back to their world.
Plot
As this is more of a transitional chapter dealing with the fallout of Chan's actions previously and moving the boys into Injeon itself, there are only a few key moments of foreshadowing contained within it:
The crazy man saying 'the tigers are in the jungle' - the jungle referring to Miroh, the city jungle, and the tigers referring to the Six.
He continues on to say 'if you get the tigers, then they can't get you, and if they can't get you, then you can sing whatever you want' - this is a very watered down description of the plot going forwards; if you defeat the Six, they will disappear, and you can make all the music you want.
Again, Hyunjin noting that it seems like Chan is hiding something at the end of the chapter. Chan is hiding that the company have decided to break the group apart, a secret that will come to light in the future.
Minho notes that he is hungry and tired and thinner than he used to be, a clue to just how much time might have passed between here and the first chapter.
The way that Han has his listeners enthralled by the song he is singing until it stops is reminiscent of the way the Six keeps the citizens of Miroh under control with the victory song, showing very early the power that Stray Kids will one day hold.

"It was all my fault, so why am I hurting?" -EX
"it hurts to send you away" -19
"I'd endure it all by thinking of you." -Starlost
"You have to know that being different is not being wrong." -District 9
"In the end, only ashes of us remain." -Winter Falls
"I'll embrace the wounds you shed." -Volcano
"The petals have withered, but the thorns are still there." -DLMLU
"Will you think of me at least once?" -LIMBO
"I imagine you in the night sky." -Starlost
"If you don't feel like it, then why do you smile?" -Silent Cry
"I was so tired of being patient." -Streetlight
"Mix every single color only just to watch it all end up black." -Double Knot
