I'm pissed.
Why?
Here I am minding my own business walking along the side walk.
Suddenly some guy who's pulling out of a wall greens rolls down his window and asks. "Need a ride?"
My response? "Uh no!" Proceeds to walk down street faster gripping make shift weapon (umbrella) in hand.
Some of you might think he was trying to be polite. Maybe he was.
But my mama did not raise an idiot who gets in random strangers' cars.
Could I have been nicer? Yes but also no cause a line needed to be drawn that I wasn't going with him.

In the 1980s, stranger danger was a real thing, prompted by the abduction of Adam Walsh, who in July 1981, had been shopping with his mother at a Florida mall when she left him alongside several other boys playing an Atari game. She was gone for less than 10 minutes. His abduction set the nation on high alert. Children like me were told to stick together and to be watchful for strangers. “Somewhere along the way, we allowed fear to get inside us,” says Paul Crenshaw in Salon. “Stranger danger made us fear strangers, so we began to see everyone as dangerous.”

Childhood story
When i was a child I'd ended up living on the streets of Houston because of a mix-up when my parents were arrested leaving me to fend for myself so I basically just ate recently expired food from supermarket dumpsters.
A guy called Robert introduced himself to me and tried to tempt me into the back of his car with candy and I thought it was sus but went along with it.
After a bit of this guy just talking to his friends on the phone with me in the back i got worried i was being kidnapped so i tried to escape and broke my way out and ran off.
Later I found my home ed teacher Miss Snow, not her real name btw but the kids couldn't remember her real name so she went by snow, and told her and so she went to the police with me and the Robert guy was there at the station so I told Snow about him.
Turns out Officer Roberts was just being a good officer and was taking me to the station himself after picking me up and the people on the phone he was talking to were actually other police officers and that was a police radio transceiver and not a phone.
How I didn't realise his very obviously police car that was fitted with a divider, and he was dressed as a police officer, only my stupid childhood brain understands.

REALLY SHORT MURDER MYSTERY
I shut the closet door and hunkered down as far as hunkering allowed. Don't panic. Don't panic. Quiet. Too quiet. And then: the glistening arc of a knife slashed through the moonlight and across my throat. An odd sense of relief and warmth flooded through my body. Was that blood running down my chest? Who would kill me? Why? I was rapidly losing strength. I looked down. In my hand was a bloody knife. “Oh, fuck,” I realized.
It was me.

Kids are absolute bafoons. There were two of them in a parking lot and one of them asked me what i was eating. I said “fish crackers, ya want sum?” and offered them some. They were so eager, I remembered my mom would kill me for that. Stranger danger. I said “Never take stuff from strangers” as i offered to both and they both took it anyways. Like i couldn’t be more clear. Lmao

Well that was weird and unexpected and strangely terrifying.
On my way home tonight the car in front of me suddenly slowed down, moved into the middle turn lane, then pulled back onto the road behind me.
I immediately had a bad feeling, so I drove past the road to my house and pulled into a gas station. The car I was worried about followed me into the station.
I pulled up to the curb. My shadow stopped at a pump.
I grabbed a Personal Protection Item (aka a fixed blade knife) out of my door pocket, tucked it unobtrusively in my hoodie, and went into the gas station to grab a drink.
I was hoping at this point that I was just being paranoid and it was a simple case of a driver making a weird maneuver and then needing gas while I was thirsty.
But I could see the car from inside the station and the driver never turned it off or got gas or anything.
So I head back to my car trying to decide if I should head to another gas station or if this is maybe serious enough to call the cops or drive to the fire station when the tailing car pulls up toward me and the driver starts yelling at me about how I don't want no trouble from her.
"You're right, I don't."
And she sped away.
I waited a few minutes to make sure she was really gone and got the hell home ASAP.
I'm glad it turned into a nothing burger and even more importantly I'm SO glad I had that gut feeling that something was wrong and decided to listen to it.
I wouldn't have liked leading that person to my house.
