i support uncensored media. does that mean i like all of it? no. do i believe it’s important it exists and continues to exist? yes.
you don't have to like/support "problematic" content to believe it shouldn't be censored. censorship affects all of us, but especially lgbt and poc creatives. it starts with the things that everyone agrees is bad — no one, not even the people who read underage, thinks harming kids is okay in any capacity.
but it never stops there. it doesn't stop at underage or incest or rape. once a corporation realizes it has your stamp of approval to censor shit, they'll keep going until it's a white cishet conservative's dream. nothing queer, nothing where poc struggles are a focal point and it's talking negatively about white people and white supremacy. no sex. no sex no matter how vanilla. that's a problem. everyone, especially people who fall into marginalized identities, should be really, really against that.
this purity culture that's started to run rampant in fandom, this need to sanitize everything, to make sure everything exists very neatly within the box of Morally Right is harmful. fiction is not inherently good or bad because it's not real.
reading about siblings having sex doesn't actually hurt anyone, neither does writing it.
this shame surrounding taboo sexual topics, though?
that hurts people. that hurts kids. purity culture is spreading in fandom but it didn't start here. people are so worried about being "morally good" about media that has no moral responsibility in the first place that they completely ignore the real life repercussions of telling children that talking about sex is wrong, that if you've ever had thoughts that don't align with the purity mindset that you're gross, that if something ever happens to you you shouldn't talk about it, that if something happens to you and, in your trauma, it becomes something you're into in a consensual, pro-kink context that you're dirty.
the vast majority of people i know and have seen both online and in person with rape or ageplay kinks are victims of sexual abuse.
fiction is a comfort and it's allowed to be no matter how weird someone else thinks it is.
no one's telling you you need to go on ao3 dot com right now and filter everything with "underage". no one's telling you to make nsfw fanart of siblings if you don't want to. the point of being pro-ship is that you're in favor of people doing what they want with fiction. i know it's got "pro" in the name, but the point of being pro-ship is to be anti censorship.

It’s so weird to me to see modern ZADR fans who are no older than like 15 whining about shipping. Like, hate to burst your bubble, but the vast majority of people don’t care about “proship” or whatever the fuck. It’s not a real issue (your personal disgust and trauma doesn’t mean that content isn’t allowed to exist) and I’m tired of people hyper focusing on it like it is.
Your feelings towards taboo or “disgusting” art are completely valid, but you have no right to treat people poorly or dish out abusive behavior over it. You certainly have no right to tell those people you wished they died, either.
It’s not the “proshippers” who ruin a fandom, it’s the fandom newbies who are obsessed with purity culture and fake progressive ideas that spread hate and abuse without hesitation.
Stop trying to tell yourself that it’s okay to be bigots and abusive towards the “right people” for the “right reasons”. You make fandom spaces, places that are meant to be fun and chill, highly stressful. Nobody should have to constantly walk on eggshells because you can’t control your temper.
No, I don’t deserve to die. No, I don’t deserve to be harassed. No, I don’t deserve threats. No, I don’t deserve abuse.

I feel like this might be something that has been said before, so feel free to ignore if repetitive, but I genuinely think the problem with """anti-shippers""" (if we have to use those terms) is that THEY are the ones who can't distinguish between reality and fiction. Often times they'll treat fictional characters as if they're real-life people and deserve the same level of respect in fiction as real people should get in reality, when that's just ABSURDLY flawed logic. I think that's why they automatically think "Oh, people who ship these two characters (abusive, problematic, etc.) must believe these things are okay in real life" because they literally CANNOT FATHOM that people use fiction AS FICTION.
And I mean, like you said, there ARE creepy people in the "proship" side of it that DO ship weird stuff because like "WEL AKTCHUALLY, 14 IS CLOSE ENOUGH TO WOMANHOOD TO BE FUCKING ADULTS", which is genuinely disgusting, but it's VERY OBVIOUS that that's not the mindset of ALL "proshippers". (Again, using quotes because the pro/anti terms are basically meaningless these days)
It's like they can't comprehend the fact that other people are capable of critical thinking, and using fiction to play with concepts and shit about stuff they would NEVER do in real life, because they themselves cannot understand the difference. It's both sad and really creepy. (Also you would not BELIEVE the amount of actual, literal pedos I've seen using the "anti-ship" label to appear safe to kids, so it's like, jesus christ, stop focusing on what people do in fiction and pay attention to the red flags of how people act towards OTHER REAL PEOPLE.)
Norry situation is fucking wild too, and also a kind of perfect example of all this, lmfao.
And to be fair, some of them actually can tell the difference between fiction and reality! There's plenty of them who tell me "I don't agree with your ships, but real world actions are more important" or just quietly unfollow without telling me to kill myself. Love that.
But yeah, the amount of people who treat fictional characters like real humans -- or prioritize them over real human beings -- is terrifying. It's killing fandom, it's starting to spill over and have real life consequences, and just like you said, all it does is distract from the actual predators that hide out in both communities.

first of all i am /Not/ proship. i am not anti-anti or whatever either. what drives me to ship them is the fact theyre friends who like to be in each other's company. i like their sweet moments together. they bond over scamming an innocent population and bullying children. they're partners in crime. theyre besties who talk shit about others as a hobby.
i also don't think theyre already dating. i look at their relationship and im like. you guys have some kind of weird crush on each other and you're also selfish assholes. they're in the world's worst situationship.
"but dedede whacks escargoon a lot!" not only does escargoon get physical towards him too (the dynamic starts shifting in the dentist episode) but his "punishments" are often for a reason. escargoon is often very mean to dedede. in almost every episode he calls him hopeless or stupid or ugly or anything like that. and that gets him a whack. if i were dedede i'd do that too! it'd piss me off! having my lackey who i pay and who i consider my best friend insult me so overtly over and over LOL. but does escargoon ever try and stop him his evil doing? hell no! the guy helps him and gives him advice and ideas! he is NOT a good guy either. he loves being mean! he literally says it!
of course escargoon cares a loy about him. pretty sure everyone is aware. i don't even need to compile all the times he runs after him or worries about his well being. one time he "left" after he realised he'd have to do all the waddle dee's chores and didn't want to do his job. guess who's shown tearing up when seeing what poor state dedede is in after being left all on his own. he's always protecting him and defending him (sometimes backhandedly) from other people. he holds dedede dear. it's obvious he does. he's an old man, he's not being manipulated into liking dedede. he genuinely cares about the guy.
there are episodes where they bicker a lot but end up getting along, episodes where they're the best of friends and episodes focused on their resentment against one another. the show kind of yoyos with their relationship. it's not really anything to take seriously. if you get offended from their interactions you'd get a heart attack from watching looney tunes. the back and forth of their dynamic is part of the fun!
I *highly* recommend watching the original version of the show as the dub often replaces sweet lines they share with jokes that don't really hit the mark. it's a shame. (however i will give the dub some credit on occasion)
Actually, i have a [post] that compiles a lot of sweet screenshots of them together. it doesnt include the times where they hold on to each other in the cannons or in the whispy woods episode or when esxargoon said "isnt this strange? can't you feel we're striving apart?" and dedede says "what! that's ridiculous!" in a lighthearted voice. or when escargoon makes a joke about a late night drive being romantic and dedede just? laughs in agreement? there's a scene where they call each other stupid in the most friendly way ever. i actually have a handy twitter of fun scenes where escargoon gets away with some things (doesn't include when escargoon yells at him in the fireworks episode or orders him in episode 69), like saying *he's* actually the one in power because dedede isn't competent enough to reign. or dedede understanding escargoon's concerns of him becoming dumber than he is already.
they're just villains who are attached to each other and are a team no matter what.
escargoon protects dedede a lot, and he cares about him more than what his job entails, but people tend to forget he's got a special place in dedede's heart too.
dedede keeps an album of pictures they took together. he never threatens to fire him and, as far as i know, never even cuts his salary and is the only one in the castle to even have a bonus. he shares the food he keeps from the waddle dees with him in episode 93. he clarifies he doesnt want knuckle joe's monsters to attack either of them. he's fine spending large amounts of money on him. twice? he never calls him ugly somehow. he even thanks him for having put up with him for so long and serving him well when the world is about to end. and then he clings unto him because he's scared of dying alone. his way of showing affection is not the "im crying because i think you're in danger" type of way that escargoon shows a lot but it's there.
Of course i don't think they're perfect gay rep. that's literally so stupid. you think im gonna look at two dumbasses who are bitter towards one another from what, a parodic, satirical children's anime from the early 2000s, and go "hmm yes this is what every queer couple should aspire to be this is peak lgbt rep"
If we're gonna talk about them how about we talk about some issues this show has that no one ever addresses. the colorism of the uv episode that is not put into question, not even by tiff, the moral compass. the rising sun imagery that is very much intentional as dedede is a caricature. the fatphobia? the fact kirby calls kawasaki and nagoya homos??? straight up???
people often blame episode 88, and yeah, it's not my favorite episode either. everyone's weird in that episode, not just dedede! yabui is far from empathetic, even the ebrums are disrespectful, and escargoon taunts dedede into chasing him for laughs and teases him about his old age. even at the end he teases him. i think it's one of those episodes that you just have to blame on the writers kinda like 89 (for example this one has got the right message but the execution is painful to watch. poor tiff.)
now, if 88 had changed their relationship it'd be a different matter. there are some sweet moments they share outside of their general "partners in crime" dynamic past episode 88 in my post actually! my favorite is the one where dedede has his arm around escargoon who's curled up like a cat while they're sleeping and the waddle dees are tucking them in from episode 91. it makes me so happy.
i could probably talk so, so much more about them. they're a huge comfort to me. however i don't trust just anyone with them. i am very much aware some people like them for the wrong reasons. but if you have a brain you can see where i'm coming from.
the show makes fun of them because they're evil, self-centered cowards. not because they're "gay" or anything like that. i saw someone call them queerbait one time and i had to log off for a minute.
anyway, to answer your question, people who do not recognize their genuine attachment to one another are bound to have a twisted view of them. i don't like dedegoon because they're "toxic" or awful to each other. but because they're each other's best friends. that's all. it's fine if you don't ship them, too. i just hope i can prove to people that they do matter to each other and that they're friends :)

Asks that give characters things are on very thin ice, I went with it for Tom eating shit but holy cow I have been getting a lot of those and a character saying "thank you" over and over again is gonna get stale.
PLEASE tell me who you are asking in your ask! If it is for everyone then say so. Just asking a random question does not let me know who it is directed to!
If you want to make fanart of the blog either submit it through submissions here OR post it and tag the blog! You can send it through asks if you want a character to react to it, but there have been a few cases I wasn't able to make it fit well.
THE CHARACTERS RESPONSES ARE NOT WHAT I BELIEVE! Tord is, if you can't tell, a bit of a dick. Don't take their responses to heart, and know that more often than not it isn't what I think verbatim.
PLEASE do not infantalize the characters. A lot of them are written to be neurodivergent (as I myself am) and while I will make posts/jokes I do not want to belittle them due to their traits!
If I get asks that are asking something I have ALREADY answered, I will probably delete it! Granted I may forget/it may change with plot development. Loose rule.
Asks that flat out tell chatacters things that they shouldn't know/that messes with the plot will be deleted!
I have had a few posts with characters uncomfortable with stuff being said about them, and they can be! ugh, wonder how long it'll be before i'm the target of a harassment campaign now
so I'm not like. super loud about being proship, mostly because fandom and adjacent spaces are my having-fun place and I think it's better use for my time to just carve out a corner of the internet where I can have fun with friends rather than spend time arguing over stuff with people. But I do occasionally reblog a post or two about proship "let people enjoy things" stances when i come across one
So this morning I reblogged one to my whump blog. Not even anything like. controversial, just from the perspective of "hey can we stop unnecessary moralizing, whump is no better or purer than any other neutral thing that might seem gross or weird to people who aren't into it", kind of thing
Not long after I got an anon ask that was like "uhhhh you don't support proships right?"
and like. okay i might not be loud about my stances in general but I also don't see the point of lying about it if asked, so i wrote a reply that was fairly long but the gist of it was along the lines of "actually i do, can i have your url so i can just block you and we can move on, but yeah i do think people should be allowed to write about whatever and any personal discomfort of mine is not enough to base moral judgements on"
so. yeah. I'm hoping that'll be it and they'll just leave me alone to continue my life. But I am kinda dreading that this'll lead to me being harassed and shit now
