Excerpt from this press release from the Center for Biological Diversity:
Late on Tuesday the House Rules Committee declined to advance an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act from Rep. Mark Amodei (R-Nev.) that would have transferred hundreds of thousands of acres of public land to the military and private developers.
Amodei’s measure would have transferred 538,000 acres of public land in Nevada to partial or complete military control, including hundreds of thousands of acres for bombing practice. The amendment also would have allocated hundreds of thousands of acres of public land for sale to private developers and mining companies, while also authorizing a massive water grab for sprawl in Churchill County.
“Nevadans and people from across the country rose up this week and demanded accountability and transparency on this measure, which was never vetted with the public,” said Olivia Brister, environmental justice program manager at the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN). “Our public lands and water are for the public, not the military and mining companies. Now we need our elected representatives to make sure this destructive proposal doesn’t come back, and we need concerned Nevadans to continue to stand with us in this fight to protect this land.”
The Navy has long pursued an expansion of its Naval Air Station-Fallon, which already includes more than 200,000 acres of bombing ranges. The areas proposed for bombing range expansion include rugged desert mountain ranges home to bighorn sheep and extensive wetlands that provide habitat for migratory birds.
The proposal would also have harmed a critically important bird area at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, a stopover for hundreds of thousands of migratory birds on the Pacific flyway. Increased supersonic jet traffic flying at lower elevations would disturb migratory and overwintering birds, including Nevada’s densest concentration of bald eagles.
Amodei’s amendment also would have forced the Interior Department to approve a massive 16.5-billion gallon per year water grab, which would pump water 50 miles from remote Dixie Valley in central Nevada to Fallon to fuel new growth. A similar proposal in the 2004 Lincoln County lands bill engendered 16 years of conflict and litigation before that pipeline died in 2020.

"NOTORIOUS GUNMAN CAUGHT IN TORONTO," Toronto Globe. September 29, 1913. Page 9. ---- Three Brothers, Murderers, Had Been Here Six Months ---- ESCAPED FROM TENNESSEE ---- Archie Parker, Alias Massey, Arrested in Earlscourt Home - One Convict Has, Died, and the Other Has Escaped. ---- Heavily armed, four Toronto detectives, Miller, Young, Armstrong and McConnell, accompanied by Officer Beasley of Knoxville, Tenn., entered a house in the rear of 10 St. Clarens avenue early Saturday morning and arrested one of the most desperate gunmen that was ever convicted of murder in Tennessee, bringing to a finish a chase which has extended for many months over the continent.
The man arrested was Archie Parker, alias Massey. The officers hoped to arrest "Brink" Massey, a brother of the prisoner, but in some manner he had heard of their coming and had made good his escape.
The charge of murder, for which three brothers had been convicted - one of them has since died in Toronto - was the outcome of a feud in the southern State over a love affair in which one of the brothers of the prisoner had been jilted in favor of a fellow-townsman named Jesse Calhoun.
Two uncles of the prisoner, so states Officer Beasley, were also convicted of murder, one of them serving a sentence of twenty years, while the other escaped from custody and remained away until the evidence of the crime was lost track of.
Bore Gruesome Scars. The man arrested here Saturday has an ugly scar extending from ear to ear across his throat, a similar scar across his back and scars of two bullet wounds on his body, all the result of fights in the south. Officer Beasley, who has known the family for many years, states that all of the male members of the family are of a very low character, and that the prisoner himself was guilty of a serious offence against his sister-in-law before he left the south. The prisoner was living with his wife and two children when arrested.
The story of the crime for which Archie Parker was arrested and the subsequent events roads like a melodrama of a certain type or a photoplay which would have difficulty In getting past the censors.
Made Vow of Revenge. When the Massey brothers learned that one of their tribe had been jilted in favor of Jesse Calhoun. It is related that they made a silent vow that they would murder their brother's rival. A short time afterwards they learned that the successful lover was in the Stillwater Inn in Knoxville. They rode up to the door and asked Calhoun to step outside as they wished to see him. As soon as Calhoun had come from the inn they emptied the contents of their revolvers into the man's body and fled to the mountains. For some time they lived in the mountains in security, supplied with food by terrified mountaineers.
One morning, however, a daring Sheriff with two assistants arrested them. while asleep. The three were tried and convicted for murder. Their sentence was deferred, and in the meantime, obtaining their freedom on bail to the extent of $20,000, they "jumped" six months ago.
Took Refuge in Earlscourt. Local officers were warned of their escape and became suspicious of the actions of the three brothers living in the house in the Earlscourt district, who were working as carters. Word was sent to Knoxville, Tenn., that It was thought these men were the much-wanted gunmen. Before Officer Beasley arrived with the descriptions of the men and the necessary papers for their arrest one of the men, Andrew Parker, died.
It is thought that the brother. "Brink" Parker, has reached the United States, but the police are now searching for him in case he is still in the city.

Omg your shifting to Arcane to?! That's so cool!
I would love to hear about yours!
-annisshifting
Sorry for replying just now.
Another Arcane shifter! Yay!
Anyways...
My Arcane DR is currently one huge mess that barely holds itself together (maybe I'll rewrite it completely someday).
Basically...
I'm shifting to Act 1 with the the ending of episode 3 scripted out. Either Vander or myself is gonna take the blame for the Kiramman's workshop explosion, in case of the former with Vander going to Stillwater, and in case of the latter with me narrowly escaping Stillwater.
As for my DR self and family.
My name in that DR is Iris. I'm a Zaunite and a mage (I have mostly smoke related powers to kinda fit the whole theme of the Undercity). I'm friends with Vi, Powder/Jinx, Mylo, Claggor and Ekko. And I have been childhood friends with Vi and Powder/Jinx due to their dad being my mom's patient for years.
My father is named Sylvain and he's also a mage. Tbh, when I scripted him I wanted for him to be kinda a middle ground between Silco and Vander. Someone who doesn't let himself and his people be walked all over like Vander, but also someone who isn't harming his own people in the process of fighting for a cause cuz "the ends justify the means" like Silco. (Which ik in itself the whole thing is kinda stupid but anyways). As it stands, is recognised as the poster man of the Nation of Zaun movement. Currently, he's in a magical coma in which he's been ever since the failed assasination attempt 2 days prior to the Day of Ash (the bridge riots/fight from the prologue).
Sylvain's mother was a Demacian refuge who fled Demacia due to the persecution of mages. His father was a riverman.
My mother is named Irene. She's a doctor and alchemist focused on helping people. She along with her older sister, Branwen were taken in by Sayuri after Irene's mom (Leah, a sex worker and spy on Sayuri's sister's payroll) died due to birth complications following my DR mom's birth.
As for Sayuri herself, she rules over the Undercity spy network and is also an owner of brothels. She's Ionian and moved to the Undercity with her older sister after they were banished from their home village, as well as the neighboring villages. She inherited her sister's "business" after she was killed.
I'm also Viktor's younger sister.
My s/o in that DR is Caitlyn Kiramman. We will have an annoyance to friends to lovers thing going on. As of the time I shift to my DR for the first time, we will be in the friends stage. And tbh, I kinda don't wanna script it out cuz it feels like wrong for me to do so, but I hope Caitlyn won't become an Enforcer in my DR.

South Africa Gold Mining Market Analysis
South Africa positions fourth universally concerning gold stores, with 2.7 million tons (Mt) in 2020, and represented 5.1% of the world's all out as of January 2021. Gold stores are generally dispersed across the territories of Gauteng and Mpumalanga.
Concerning significant makers, Amicability Gold, Sibanye-Stillwater, Gold Fields, and Container African Assets are the main four gold makers in South Africa, representing 83.3% of the nation's complete creation. Together, these organizations created 2,669.1koz of gold in 2020.
Over the conjecture period (2021-2025), the country's gold creation is supposed to extend at a CAGR (build yearly development pace) of over 3% by 2025.
Development will be mostly upheld by north of 20 impending ventures which are a work in progress, of which two are under development. Platreef Venture and Bakubung Task are supposed to initiate activity by 2022, with a consolidated metal creation limit of more than 31 koz.
Gold mining in South Africa has been encountering an extreme descending pattern for a long time, essentially because of rising mining costs, association strikes and power disturbances. In mid-2018, the South African Mineral Board expressed that more than 75% of homegrown gold mines were unbeneficial, because of the rising expense of underground mining.
This pattern went on in 2020, with creation additionally being affected by the development of the Covid (Coronavirus) pandemic, as well as rising creation costs. This prompted an expected fall of 10.4% in the country's gold creation to 3.2 million ounces (Moz) in 2020, against 2019.
Gold makers benefited essentially from a lofty expansion in the gold cost in 2020, with gold seen as a place of refuge in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic and loan fee cuts and colossal liquidity infusions by national banks and legislatures as a reaction to the pandemic.
This brought areas of strength for about into gold-upheld trade exchanged reserves (ETF) and upheld gold costs. Regardless of the solid recuperation in gold interest alongside ETF inflow in Q2 2021, worldwide gold interest fell by 10% in H1 2021, against H1 2020, basically because of the impacts of the Coronavirus episode and lower interest from China. China and India are the biggest gold-consuming nations on the planet, together representing the greater part of the absolute interest.

Vi is a Complicated Character in an Unusual way
Tumblr media
Its hard for me to know how and where to start talking about Vi On the surface she seems like the same character and as a viewer we take comfort in the familiarity being our narrative tool to introduce us to the changes in Zaun and its inhabitants.
So lets talk about Young Vi
Tumblr media
Young Vi was strong, confident, and unbeatable in her own mind. She won every fight. She was the leader of a team. She thought she knew everything and her presence commanded respect among her peers. Young Vi thought she could take on the world and this mindset led her to justify her desire to screw over the topsiders whenever she could as a little slice of revenge for what her people go through daily. She is a risk taker but it always pays off and she arguably feels like the only thing holding her back is the kind and caring Vander. That is the simplified view of her that we see. But young Vi is the product of seeing her parents corpses on a bridge and the rage, pain, and loss from that experience which she holds Piltover responsible for. And her fists are her emotional outlet. Young Vi seems to have never really had consequences beyond a parent figure scolding/guiding her. She might get into scraps, but always comes out on top and each win and each bruise is payment to make sure less and less of it happens in the future. But young Vi lived in a childs world. She was 17 (as stated in council archives) at the time of loosing her second-hand family but all of her scraps had been with others around her age or younger. Her crimes were petty theft... nothing with serious undertones. She is first faced with real adult level obstacles when the enforcers are looking for her and her family for the botched theft. And the darkness and cruelty of the adult world his her hard when Benzo is killed and Vander is taken away.
It shakes her to her core. After a night of fear, near death experiences, and further loss, she is captured. This is the first time we see that Young Vi is having to face REAL adult consequences, irreversible consequences, to her actions and choices.
Tumblr media
So, Vi spends years in prison, and now we have our current (Arcane timeline) Vi. She has had no room to grow in prison. The council archives tell us what life was like for Vi in prison. She brutally attacked any of Silco’s men who showed up in Stillwater as inmates that she could get a hold of. She would interrogate them during the fights for information about her sister. The prison wards mistook her obsession with Powder to be a substance addiction, not a person. She was abused by the wardens and locked in solitary confinement several times. And her violence was even bringing down the morale of the prison employees to the point that they asked for her to be transferred to another facility.
All she had for years was her loss, regret, and rage to live with. And over the years the passion in her rage broke down and yielded to the pain and loss. She was no longer aggressive out of confidence but was aggressive out of an insecure defense mechanism. Puffing her chest up bigger to not show her weakness. She was a broken person.
Tumblr media
When Caitlyn frees Vi she is determined to find her sister, seek vengeance on Silco, and return to the undercity. Vi is trying to reclaim the confidence and lifestyle she once had.
but instead she sees just how much time has passed her by. Her home, The Last Drop, is perverted with Silco’s influence where it once was a refuge for those who brought warmth and community. All of the problems of Zaun have only gotten worse like a festering wound untreated. She hears horrible unbelievable things about her sister. Her kind sister who’s devices never worked, who was a tinkerer, a child, who ran away from fights, and was scared by violence, and would only use her make-shift bombs as a defense mechanism. And instead, upon their reunion, Vi realizes Powder has been twisted into someone who actively participates in the violence and destruction with a smile. Shoots first. Doesnt just subdue her opponent to win, but instead goes for the kill to ensure they cant come back. Someone who is a willing participant in the downfall of that oh-so valuable sense of community.
Tumblr media
“but you changed too”
Jinx had grown up with this... this vision of admiration of who her sister was. She was always strong, ready to fight. Family meant EVERYTHING to her. Enforcers were the enemy no matter what.
Now, dont get me wrong, Vi is still one tough cookie. And she will punch the smirk off your face if you ever say otherwise. But to Jinx, her sister has grown soft... and betrayed everything she ever once stood for. So the tea party was a test... go back to who you used to be and kill an enforcer for me, your family.
Tumblr media
“here’s to the new us”
Where Vi learned to set aside her rage and instead just wanted to protect what she loved, Jinx was now carrying that same animosity mixed with a large sprinkle of crazy.
I feel like Vi sees this in her sister and just wants to protect her before she goes through the same experiences of being broken down or dies fighting. So Vi might act the same as she did when she was younger in a lot of ways. And she seems to be one of the characters with the least amount of change. But i really feel like her motivations and reasons and emotions behind her actions have completely changed from how she was before. She needed to be broken down so she could look past her anger and see what Vander was telling her all along. So she can look at the future and what she wants to protect and what she is willing, really willing, to sacrifice for it. And just like Vander, she came to the conclusion that if working together with Enforcers was what it took to protect what she loved, she was willing to do it. Her rage towards Piltover was not worth further loss. And in doing so, she even learned that most topsiders really arent so bad, just sheltered and ignorant of the reality of Zauns struggles. idk.. its a lot of rambles... and a lot of this is pretty easy to glean and see but... i really do sympathize with Vi. I love Jinx... Jinx is my favorite character hands down. But Vi was just trying so desperately to aim for happiness with her sister and she was willing to swallow her pride and rage for it. Its unfortunate... I feel like young Vi would have gotten along with Jinx. Maybe found some of her methods questionable, sure. But ultimately would have gotten along with her. And young Powder would have loved current Vi. The more calm Vi willing to listen and be more emotionally available.

Blue sky and warm sun make the water glisten at Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge, a prized oasis in the Nevada desert. More than just astounding views, it serves as a vital stopover for birds and other wildlife. In winter, snow tops the mountain backdrop, raptors hunt the landscape and migrating waterfowl and tundra swans take up residence. Spring and summer bring bird nesting, shorebirds and the intensifying heat of the desert. The sun, the drive, the vibrant wildlife, company you care about -- all add up to make an excellent formula for adventure. Taking time to explore national wildlife refuges so often bring refuge to those who visit too.

Great Lakes Moment: River otters return to western Lake Erie
Most people know river otters from zoos or YouTube videos as endearing playful creatures that can put a smile on anyone’s face.
The river otter, once common throughout much of North America, was first reduced by trapping and then displaced from many areas by loss of habitat from urbanization and pollution. But sightings along western Lake Erie at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in Ohio and Point Pelee National Park in Leamington, Ontario, and evidence of a return of river otter to Toronto Harbour, raise the prospects that they just might return one day to the Detroit River too.
The river otter makes its home near the water. They live in a den by the edge of a lake, stream, or marsh. One fun fact is that River Otters don’t dig their own dens, they either use a natural hollow or burrow made by another animal. Otter dens feature numerous tunnels with easy access to water, especially for night hunting for fish, amphibians, crayfish and other aquatic delicacies. They can even close their nostrils to keep water out during long dives and stay underwater for up to 8 minutes.
Tumblr media
Trail cam photo of a river otter from the Toronto and region watershed. (Photo credit: Toronto Region Conservation Authority).
Historically, river otters were present throughout most of North America, including southeast Michigan and southwest Ontario. One Monroe County, Michigan, creek is even named Otter Creek, a testament to how common they were during the late 1700s. However, that all changed during the Fur Trade Era when river otters were harvested in large numbers for their valuable water-resistant pelts. While hunting and trapping reduced otter numbers in Michigan, Ontario and Ohio, urbanization and water pollution proved to be the final blows. By the early 1900s these semi-aquatic mammals were gone.
In 1986, the Ohio Department of Natural Resources began a 7-year project to reintroduce river otters to areas with clean water and abundant food supply. More than 100 River Otters were captured in Arkansas and Louisiana, where they were still common, and transported to eastern Ohio. They were then released in the Grand River (a tributary of the central basin of Lake Erie) and Killbuck Creek, Little Muskingum River and Stillwater Creek, which flow into rivers that are part of the Mississippi River watershed.
By all accounts the river otter has not only survived but thrived in these watersheds. Monitoring has shown slow but steady growth of the population, and in 2002 it was even removed from Ohio’s list of state endangered species. But as the river otter population grew, individual otters began to adventure out to new watersheds – what scientists call expanding their range.
Some of the adventurous otters have now found a home in western Ohio. River otter sightings have occurred annually for more than 10 years from Cedar Point south to Darby, Ohio, near Columbus. Along the southern shore of western Lake Erie, not only have they been seen in Cedar Point, but Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge located just 15 miles east of Toledo, Magee Marsh Wildlife Area and the Toussaint River. Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge manages 6,500 acres of wetlands, grasslands and woodlands for protection of a wide diversity of waterfowl and other migratory birds, resident wildlife, and threatened and endangered species. Refuge biologists and volunteers have confirmed that they are now reproducing in refuge. What a thrill for conservationists and nature lovers to see them frolicking in the waters of western Lake Erie after an 80-year absence.
In March 2019, a naturalist discovered a set of tracks in the snow at Point Pelee National Park in Leamington, Ontario, on the northern shore of western Lake Erie. The tracks were discovered near the DeLaurier Canal and immediately they knew that they were not the mink tracks often seen in the park. There was a set of mink tracks nearby for comparison, which were much smaller, narrower and of course did not have the “slide” marks characteristic of otters.
Tumblr media
Suspected river otter tracks at DeLaurier Canal, 2019. (Photo courtesy of Point Pelee National Park.)
Then in June 2019, two Parks Canada team members were in a boat entering the channel to West Cranberry Pond in the park marsh when an otter swam very close to their boat before diving underneath. Within a couple of weeks of that sighting, another team member working at the marsh boardwalk saw an otter swimming in the open water just to the left of the marsh tower. You can imagine how exciting it would be for a naturalist to see the return of river otters to this revered national park for the first time since it was established in 1918.
Situated on the northern shore of Lake Ontario is Toronto – Canada’s largest city and a key hub of the nation’s commercial, financial, industrial and cultural life. It has long been recognized as a pollution hotspot. In 1985 the International Joint Commission identified Toronto and region as a Great Lakes pollution hotspot and area of concern. Since then, substantial cleanup of pollution and habitat restoration have occurred, resulting in a surprising ecological revival.
More than $80 million alone have been invested in habitat restoration in Toronto and region since 1987. One exciting wetland restoration project has been Corner Marsh at Duffins Creek. For decades it had been in a degraded state, and over 10 years ago it was restored to the point where wetland vegetation, nesting birds and amphibians were flourishing again. Corner Marsh now has the highest population density of muskrats on the north shore of Lake Ontario, which attracted river otters to the area. River otters then spread from Duffins Creek and now occupy the entire Toronto waterfront. It has been over a hundred years since river otters freely inhabited the Toronto waterfront.
Knowing that river otters have returned to the once heavily polluted Toronto Harbour, that they have been successfully reintroduced into eastern Ohio, and that they have now been seen along western Lake Erie in Point Pelee National Park, Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and other locations, is it possible that they just might return one day to the Detroit River?
I say yes.
Skeptics might say no. But we must all remember that as recently as 1985 there were no bald eagles, peregrine falcons, or osprey reproducing in the Detroit River watershed because of eggshell thinning caused by pesticides like DDT, no lake sturgeon or lake whitefish were reproducing in the Detroit River, and beavers had long disappeared.
Today they are all back. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we had one more ecological surprise?
Check out the Detroit Zoo’s live otter cam HERE.

The Navy wants to expand its bombing range in Nevada, so I hope the bighorn, the mule deer, the golden eagles, the tortoises and the kit fox will all be given training in building and occupying bomb shelters. The guy quoted in the article, Pat Donnelly from the Center for Biological Diversity, is one of my friends. I can hear the outrage in his voice!
Excerpt from this EcoWatch article:
Friday the U.S. Navy released details of a plan to seize more than 600,000 acres of public land in central Nevada to expand a bombing range. The land under threat includes rich habitat for mule deer, important desert springs and nesting sites for raptors like golden eagles.
If approved by Congress, the 1,536-page plan would transform entire valleys and mountain ranges into bombing targets. Combined with another proposal to expand the Air Force's Nevada Test and Training Range, the military is attempting to grab 1.75 million acres of public land in Nevada—an area larger than Delaware.
"It's outrageous that the Trump administration wants to ram another military takeover of public lands down our throats," said Patrick Donnelly, Nevada state director at the Center for Biological Diversity. "The wide-open spaces of central Nevada's basin-and-range country are part of what makes our state so spectacular. Congress shouldn't let Trump seize hundreds of thousands of acres of public land so the military can drop bombs on our cherished wildlife and wild places."
The proposal would triple the size of Fallon Naval Air Station bombing ranges, seizing land in the iconic Fairview Peak area and the Stillwater National Wildlife Refuge. The plan released Friday follows an earlier proposal to expand the Nevada Test and Training Range in southern Nevada, which would take more than 1.1 million acres of Desert National Wildlife Refuge, currently managed to protect bighorn sheep and other wildlife.
The public has 60 days to comment on the enormous draft environmental impact statement, shorter than the 90 days normally given to comment on such a lengthy and complex document. The Navy has scheduled public meetings in Hawthorne and Gabbs (Dec. 10), Austin and Eureka (Dec. 11), Fallon (Dec. 12), and Reno and Lovelock (Dec. 13).
