Gerry Beckley: Frame Job

Gerry Beckley has some peculiar enthusiasms. A founding member of the ’70s Cali-rock band America, he spends most of his days on the road reviving ‘‘Sister Golden Hair.’’ And each morning, like clockwork, he photographs the view from his hotel-room window — a ritual he’s kept up for about 15 years. Wherever Beckley happens to be — a United States Air Force base in Japan, a street stall in Ecuador — he’s prowling for vintage treasures: classic tennis sneakers (Dunlop plimsolls), wristwatches (Bell & Ross) and especially eyeglasses made in the 1950s and 1960s by American Optical and others of that thick-framed ilk. ‘‘My tastes tend toward the archival,’’ says Beckley, 58, who has become so sophisticated about design that he can talk shop with an expanding clutch of artistically inclined friends, including the minimalist architect John Pawson and the fashion designer Steven Alan. ‘‘Gerry came in the store and said, ‘I’m a fan of what you do. I have a band you might have heard of called America,’ ’’ Alan recalls. ‘‘He even sent me a greatest-hits CD.’’ The designer and musician have become good friends, and the Steven Alan outpost in TriBeCa is now stocking a small batch of vintage frames hand-picked by Beckley, many with period accents like comfort-cable temples that hook around the ear (above right; $140 without lenses, $200 with tinted lenses; at 103 Franklin Street). Beckley says collecting vintage eyewear goes way beyond the vaguely anachronistic impulses of, say, an Urban Outfitters devotee. ‘‘It’s not just saying, ‘Let’s all wear Buddy Holly glasses!’ ’’ he says. ‘‘It’s understanding the difference between what Buddy wore, what Onassis wore, what James Dean wore.’’

Duffer in Arms and Stranger Things

The Defence of Duffer's Drift is a short story by Ernest Dunlop Swinton that follows Lieutenant Backsight Forethought, who is given the task of defending the 'Drift from an approaching Boer force. The scenario plays out six times, during which Forethought learns from his early defeats and eventually manages to hold out against the Boers. The story also explores the various roles of characters, including the main character, Lieutenant Billy Duffer. Spelling variations The BFI's mission is to save weird British films from obscurity. Duffer is one such film. The title comes from the character Duffer's voiceover, usually performed by Kit Gleave. Duffer puts a cheerful spin on a bleak existence. Duffer's antagonist is Louis Jack, played by James Roberts, a pseudonym for the co-director William Dumaresq. Vecna The Stranger Things season 4 trailer revealed a new character, Vecna, and the reveal isn't exactly surprising. The Duffer brothers, who created the hit Netflix show, have revealed a little bit about the mysterious monster. He told IGN that Vecna is based on a character from the D&D role-playing game. And the good news is that almost everything about Vecna is practical. The movie has strong fantasy elements, just as the films based on the "Elm Street" series have. Freddy inhabits a separate realm where he has complete control of his victims. And in "Freddy's Dead," Freddy is explicitly compared to a fantasy witch. Vecna fits into this archetype, too. But how does she fit in? Let's look at some of the plot points below. Vecna, a lich-turned-god, is an intriguing villain. While Vecna isn't included in the D&D open source rules, he has a lot of similarities to the famous villain in the Elm Street series. Vecna's prosthetics are also reminiscent of Krueger's, including his clawed hand. This could potentially revive the essence of Englund's Freddy Krueger. Billy Duffer Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer are responsible for the upcoming Netflix series, "Billy Duffer in Arms." The critically acclaimed Stephen King-Steven Spielberg mash-up follows the life of a troubled young man named Billy. The first season of the series premiered in July 2016. The duffer brothers first offered Billy the role after a Skype call. The Duffers cast him after the actor had a similar look to the character's. The Duffer Brothers' father, Neil, also starred in the series, as did the duffer brothers. Billy is a lifeguard at Hawkins Community Pool and also acts like a violent father. He once attacked his stepsister, Max, after the latter questioned him about the murder of his mother. Billy is determined to get back his mother, but in the meantime, he finds himself in a compromising situation. In the film, Billy was a typical 'Bad Boy' with violent undertones. He had once considered killing Karen but later changed his mind, despite the fact that he was attracted to Heather and Lucas Sinclair. Ultimately, Learn More was possessed by The Mind Flayer, who used Billy's body to kidnap the residents of Hawkins and build the Spider Monster. However, despite his remorseful behavior and violent attitude towards Max, he managed to save him with a sling shot. In addition to the violence, Billy's violent behavior is fueled by his own societal anxiety. His behavior is indicative of the way white men perceive black men. The rapacious black brute stereotype was often used to justify countless lynchings in American history. The lynchings were usually framed as a means of retribution for black men approaching white women. In Billy Duffer in Arms, this stereotype is rooted in history.

W: «Miei cari parenti» i Dent fanno per lo più cenno col capo «amici, compagni di scuola, di classe, di squadra... e tutti voi che così cortesemente avete accettato di essere qui con i vostri figli e nipoti» la voce è salda e ben udibile, il fraseggio calmo e misurato. «vi ringrazio immensamente di aver voluto partecipare a questa piccola merenda all`aperto» all`anima della merenda, ma la forma è forma e va rispettata. «...nonostante tutto.» lo sguardo si volge alla figura di TIA. Un respiro profondo. Devo farcela senza schiattare sul colpo... «Prima di procedere oltre con questo piccolo evento, vorrei invitarvi tutti ad alzare i calici» alza il proprio bicchiere «in onore di coloro che, per sorte o destino, hanno dovuto lasciarci» la voce trema un poco, in questo, e per un momento una genuina ed immensa tristezza è avvertibile sulla sua espressione. «Amici preziosi, parenti e colleghi...» di recente è morta davvero troppa gente. [...] «Dunque, per favore, vogliate tutti bere un sorso, per tutti quanti loro» un goccio di champagne viene fatto graziosamente scivolare in terra, in un gesto che è la discreta libagione per i defunti. Poi, beve. Infine, abbassa il bicchiere, e prosegue. «...vorrei inoltre fare un piccolo annuncio, a voi che mi siete vicini.» il cuore gli batte così forte in petto che quasi si sente morire. Serra la sinistra lungo il fianco, ed aggiunge «...di recente, ho potuto assumere il cognome della mia compianta madre, che dalla nascita mi attendeva... e sarebbe strano» un piccolo sorrisetto a portare quell`atmosfera serissima ad una parvenza di familiarità «dovermi presentare daccapo a tutti, uno per volta» si gira su sé stesso, ad inquadrare tutti gli ospiti. «Perciò, quest`oggi, condivido con voi questa lieta notizia. È finalmente ufficiale, che il mio nome completo sia William Dent Tollen.» alza appena le dritte spalle. La nonna annuisce la sua approvazione, e William china appena il capo, presentandosi per la prima volta col suo nome completo, più o meno a tutti i suoi amici. Un po` rosso in viso, ma compostissimo all`apparenza.

L: Entrambi i genitori di Luke sembrano essere molto socievoli, infatti parlano in maniera molto educata e cortese con chiunque gli capiti davanti, andando spesso e volentieri a finire a parlare di politica. In questo genere di occasioni, il povero Luke si comporta esattamente al contrario dei due genitori, in quanto si limita a salutare, fare l`educato e stare in silenzio. Non che sia a disagio, semplicemente non ama questo tipo di situazioni. [...] sposta lo sguardo nuovamente su WILLIAM. Lo ascolta parlare, alzando il bicchiere, alle parole riguardo le persone che li hanno dovuti lasciare in questo periodo. Beve, anche lui, per poi abbassare il bicchiere e continuare a seguire le parole del quartino. Quando sente che questo è riuscito - finalmente - ad acquisire il cognome Tollen, i suoi occhi si aprono e l`espressione un po` triste ritorna sorridente e allegra. ESMERELDA porta via tutti gli adulti, compresi i suoi genitori, che saluta con un sorriso e un piccolo cenno del capo. Poi si avvicina agli amici e la festicciola meno formale può finalmente iniziare.

Incredible high gain amp sim - Omega Granophyre from Neural DSP

The last weeks I´ve tested a lot of high gain amp sims for rhythm tone. Today I got deeper into the Omega Ampworks Granophyre from Neural DSP and I was blown away. If you could select Tom’s next project, which director (or producer / writer / co star) would you pair with Tom. I’m a tad envious that Robert Pattinson has such a great mix (though he’s great), but would love for Tom to jump back into the ‘conversation’ as he elegantly says. He deserves a great collaboration. Any thoughts?

This ask is a few days old and as such got overtaken by reality yesterday. But it's the sort of ask that I'm not getting nearly often enough *hint hint* 😉 so I will gladly answer it now.

A quick word about White Stork. I have neither seen Jericho nor Taboo, so both Christopher Dunlop and Kristoffer Nyholm were not on my radar at all. Both shows are nothing to scoff at, though, so I'm excited so see what they do with it! Hell, I am excited one way or the other, it's Tom's next project! LOL

This will absolutely not be a complete list, because I'm sure that I will forget lots of people.

I'll go with directors first:

Top of my list are people like Denis Villeneuve, Christopher Nolan, Steven Soderbergh, Sam Mendes, Danny Boyle, Noah Baumbach, Rian Johnson, Ridley Scott, Alfonso Cuarón, Alejandro González Iñárritu, JJ Abrams. I'd love to see him work with people like Kenneth Branagh, Joanna Hogg, Susanne Bier, Steven Spielberg and Ben Wheatley again.

Producers: most of these directors are their own producers, or work mostly with the same producers, so them. Damon Lindelof. JJ Abrams.

Writers: same as with producers, many of these directors are also writers, so I'd love to see Tom work with them, of course. I've also always liked Tony Gilroy's scripts. I adored Eric Heisserer's script for Arrival, so he would be on my list too. JJ Abrams. Martin McDonagh.

There are a few writers/producers/showrunners that I would love to see Tom work with. Chris Chibnall (I loved Broadchurch), Jed Mercurio (I loved Bodyguard and Line Of Duty), Paul Abbott (I loved Shameless, State Of Play, Exile), Shane Meadows (The Virtues wrecked me).

As for co-stars: basically any actor that I like! LOL

Top of the list, off the top of my head: Amy Adams, Olivia Colman, Emma Stone, Colin Farrell, Ewan McGregor, James McAvoy, Scarlett Johansson, Lizzie Olsen, George McKay, Russell Crowe, Adam Driver, Daisy Ridley, Laura Dern, Elisabeth Debicki, Zawe Ashton, John Simm, Jake Gyllenhaal, John David Washington, Lashana Lynch, Naomie Harris, the list goes on and on and on... Might be easier to ask me who I DON'T want to see Tom work with. Heh.

When it comes down to is, though, I will just do what I've always done: I will let Tom surprise me. I am not one of those fans that have very clear expectations or preferences for what they want to see, and simply won't see a movie/tv series if those expectations aren't met. I will go with whatever Tom chooses, whichever genre, director, writer etc. Even if it means for me to have to think outside my box. I may not always end up liking everything in equal measures, but I think it's wrong to close yourself off to certain possibilities from the outset. You may prevent yourself from being pleasantly surprised.
