Can we talk about how superior of a moment Stefan taking Elena on a hike round the falls and watching a sunset on a hill for her assumed, last day as a human is vs Damon and Elena going to the clocktower and jumping off on her last day as a vampire. Because honestly, wtf about anything prior suggests Damon would even think to do something like that? A truly cheap imitation. it wasn't even built up and the fact he JUST tried to keep her from becoming human EVER again ????

Well because what did Damon and Elena ever do together that was a celebration of vampirism for that clock tower scene to make any sort of real impact?

Like, it's with Stefan that Elena actually tests her limits as a vampire and does the cool vampire things or has a different type of confidence/pettiness because of her vampirism

Like she learns from him

even the Delena straddle scene the DErs loooooove so much, she can only do because STEFAN taught her

Damon and Elena had being blood high

which they literally only have because of the sire bond

even when they insert their oh-so-romantic-oh-so-lovely scenes/flashbacks in season 6, they're fucking standing still in the rain

or having an awkward first date

there is nothing inherently tied with the beauty and the power and the possibilities of vampirism, of what you can do with vampirism, even the "summer of her dreams" is

so when we do this

WHO CARES? When were they EVER at the clock tower?

What makes Kolvina so fucking superior is that it’s the “he hates everyone but her” trope and “villain who would burn the world to the ground to save her” trope. Ships like Stelena could never compare, Stefan would sacrifice Elena to save the world but Kol would sacrifice anything (even his own life) for Davina.

Not to mention he goes against his family for her.

AND it’s the “the only thing that makes me feel alive is you” trope for both of them. Davina keeps Kol in touch with the playful side he had as a witch and makes him feel human even as a vampire. Kol makes Davina feel like she has someone who would never betray her and he finally gives her some stability in her life with his love and was the only person to always believe in her since her parents and then surrogate dad Marcel all betrayed and tried to control her at times.

I wanted to ask you did you watched the originals and do you ship klaroline or klamille and what do you think of steroline?

i was a klamille girlie (and halijah :( i'm never over it) through and through, and i love cami so, so dearly and never totally forgave/recovered from what they did to her. my brave girl. i loved the originals a lot and at its best still think it was the superior show, as much as i loved tvd too. the cast (joseph and daniel always get singled out specifically, and for good reason, but charles, leah, claire, phoebe, yusuf!!! et al were all so great) , the insane mikaelson dynamics, the setting in new orleans, the lean in to the grander mythology and gothic horror...catered to me very specifically.

i also don't hide that i was shamelessly a diehard stelena (and to a lesser degree datherine and forwood), i adored stefan and caroline as friends but never enjoyed their dynamic romantically please don't hate me, so the joke was on me because i lost on every single one of these? 😂 though i should note i also mostly quit tvd once elena left and have never entirely watched those last couple of seasons, so i'm sure there are vital aspects i didn't see with how they developed that.

i miss both shows terribly though, i often toy with the idea of a rewatch!

Rachel!! Your blog is one of the main reasons I check Tumblr daily. So since I saw you got a TVD ask. I wanted to make a TVD confession. I fully expected to ship Stelena over Delena for a variety of reasons, but when I actually watched I just felt like Delena had a relationship that despite its problems was more genuine and real? I also feel like Elena was happier and more in love with Damon and they often had better and more honest communication than Stelena did, as odd as that sounds given that Stelena was supposedly the "healthy" and stable ship. Here's my very very very UO that I could only confess on anon: I sort of dislike Stefan. I thought I'd LOVE him. He's completely my type. I don't know if it's the writing or acting or some combination, but for me the character came off as arrogant, detached, self-superior and a bit cold more often than not. And there's this disconnect where we're told over and over that non-Ripper Stefan is so very good and heroic but then in reality he just doesn't come off nearly as genuinely kind and selfless as he's made out to be. And post-Stelena Stefan in particular was actually kind of an ass to most people?! Damon ends up getting close to Bonnie, Ric, Liz Forbes etc, but Stefan deep down didn't really seem to value connection with any person other than Elena? Don't get me started on the mess that was Steroline and how imbalanced that relationship seemed. Anyway, just wanted to confess my uo while also telling you how much I love your blog.

stefan never compelling elena and giving her the neclace to also potentially protect her from him, tells lexi it all must be her choice, knows elena doesn't want to be a vampire and never pressures her, works to free her from sirebond and get her the cure, saves matt first because that's elena's choice, makes sure she keeps the cure so she'll always be able to have the choice, constantly backing her, delena's literal backbone etc. etc. etc. a stelena sirebond arc was written in the stars fr.

Yeah! It wasn't until I actually started writing the fic that I was like, the sire bond could've actually been an interesting plot point if it was given to the superior ship and teasing out how true a choice can be during these moments, it would've been some quality angst. I love how SE are even better than DE at specifically DE storylines.

Okay so I know it’s 2021 and all but your comparison with Stydia was SO good that I have to ask something. I saw how at some point you used Stydia as an example of romances that are shown, not told. I totally agree with you on that, but could you maybe go more into depth and explain how? I always have a hard time putting it into words, but it’s actually one of my favorite things about them.

Anon, it’s never a bad time to talk about Stydia! They were the ship that brought me into fandom, made me make a fandom ig and all. I’ll always love them.

I think what I mean is just that it’s a romance I believe. This is the combination of a lot of things: subtlies in the writing, directing, acting choice, and natural chemistry. A lot of ships are flops right out of the gate because there isn’t a lick of chemistry to be found; in this case it’s always better to cut your losses and move on (seriously. Do people not do chemistry reads for casting of major couples? Do they just suck at doing them?).

With Stydia an example of a scene done really, really well was their first kiss. If you don’t pick up on nuance in a scene (which... an alarming amount of people don’t. There is a trend in corners of fandom where if two characters aren’t having sex on screen they must be platonic, but that’s another tangent I’m not going off on) or if you have two actors who do it differently, you might come away thinking “Lydia stopped Stiles’s panic attack by kissing him. It was just to stop his panic attack, and they moved on.” (You’d think this is a joke but... I have heard this exact argument... ANYWAY). Watching the scene, though, you see the wonder in their eyes. The awe on both their faces, how Lydia felt something she totally didn’t expect to feel. The way they played off each other was just incredible and we knew they felt a LOT A LOT about what had just happened just based on acting and filming choices alone.

We saw Stydia go through shared trauma together, we saw them risk their lives for each other time and time again. We saw them admire each other’s intelligence. Stiles shielding Lydia from harm with his whole body, not once but twice. When the “I love you came” it felt so, so earned.

In contrast, I think a lot of main season one ships tend to be kind of shoved in your face. They say they’re madly in love and you just go “wait but why though?” I don’t want to be asking why they even like each other. Usually these are Insta love, but I have seen some more fast burning ships pulled off... they just have to have 10/10 actor chemistry (Jarah and scallison are believable. Even Stelena, and I’m a Delena shipper. Nimue and arthur from cursed are... not. This is my favorite example I can think of, but I know a lot of you haven’t seen it). And ships like Stalia and becho being put in a committed relationship off screen when they have a competitor that’s built up on screen and is superior in every way is never going to work, either. Pokie is another ship without a shred of romantic chemistry, too.
