…It occurs to me suddenly that the test shots I did of him in the set that was going to stand in for his room at that inn never did progress to a finished version. Well, whatever… here’s one. Last night I made my first suet crust savoury pastry, and as I write this I'm eating part of it for lunch at work. Predictably, it improved overnight and the crust is even more delectable today.

This is the recipe that I used for 'traditional steak pie'. (Traditional, maybe, but not a historical recipe since it calls for an Imperial metric shit tonne of baking powder between the self-rising flour and additional leavening). I wanted something simple to try, and it seemed like every other recipe called for a pressure cooker (??) and/or some condiment that can only be purchased in Yorkshire.

There was barely enough pastry to cover the pie so I didn't make any decorations, but maybe next time! I guess the suet pastry can't be used for a bottom crust for a pie, although it lines the bottom of the pudding basin for traditional steak and kidney pudding. That's another recipe I would love to try although it looks like quite a production.

I finally did it. I made a chicken pot pie and a steak pie

They were delicious.

I spent five hours making that steak pie just for it to basically be a glorified pot roast.

Chicken

Chicken, veggie mix, potatoes, onion, heavy cream, various seasonings

Next time, I will be cutting my veggies instead of using a frozen mix, just because I can and I don't like peas. But it was my first time, and I was cooking the chicken and didn't want to spend 20 minutes chopping or spend money on each individual vegetable.

I should've added a splash of lemon juice to brighten it up.

Steak

Stew meat, potatoes, mushrooms, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, onion, carrots, parsley, various seasonings,

This was good, but just like pot roast, it needs fresh red onion on top to brighten it up

I could've just served it out the pot with pie crust chips instead of baking it, especially since my pie dough was both melted and frozen, so I had to break it up. Also, stew meat needs to simmer for hours to be tender. So it spent an extra pointless 20 minutes in the oven just to cook the crust that I had to break into pieces, meaning the gravy bubbled up over it.

I used store bought pie crust.

It has occurred to me that we've actually been following the development of three of the four emperors throughout One Piece. Buggy and Blackbeard aren't the leaders of some nebulous organizations that are just arbitrary antagonists to the Strawhat pirates.

They are characters we've seen go from small-time pirates to Emperors alongside Luffy. While the rest of the world sees them as these terrifying figures, we know Buggy as the goofball who has failed his way to success and Blackbeard as the happy-go-lucky schemer who really likes cherry pies.

I don't know about you, but I'm looking forward to when the Emperors clash because we don't need to ask about their motives, members, powers, or anything like that. We already know because we got to see them develop in real time.
