“With her ten centuries of terrors, of shadows and promises, Russia was more likely than all others to adapt to the night side of our historical moment. Apocalypse suits her wonderfully, she has the habit of it, the taste for it, and functions within it today better than ever, since she has visibly changed rhythm. "Where are you rushing, O Russia?" Gogol already asked, perceiving the frenzy she concealed under her apparent immobility. We know where now, and above all we know that like all nations of an imperial destiny, she is more impatient to solve the problems of others than her own. Which is to say that our career in time depends on what she will decide or will undertake: she holds our future in her hands. . . . Fortunately for us, time does not exhaust our substance. The indestructible, the Elsewhere are conceivable: in us? apart from us? How can we tell? The fact remains that as things are now, only questions of strategy and metaphysics deserve our interest, those that rivet us to history and those that wrench us from it: actuality and the absolute, the newspapers and the Gospels. . . . I foresee the day when we shall read nothing but telegrams and prayers. A remarkable phenomenon: the more our immediacy absorbs us, the more we feel the need to offset it, so that we live, in one and the same moment, within the world and outside it. Hence, when we confront the sideshow of empires, all that remains for us to do is seek a middle term between the skull's grin and serenity.” - Emil Cioran, ‘History and Utopia’ (1960) [pages 36, 37]

Property spotlight: Cathedral views
Property spotlight: Cathedral views
Cities are fascinating entities – at least they are here in Britain. Throughout history, cities have come about due to a number of different factors; population size, status granted by a ruling monarch or if the place has a diocesan cathedral – to name just three reasons. This week, we’ve chosen ‘city’ properties enjoying cathedral views that are on the market, one from each of the four home…

Behold, a bracket!
Text form below the cut because trying to copy all the 256 into the alt text sounded.... horrifying. Warning for 128 matchups, seriously, this list is long, and so I've avoided adding the artists until the polls.
a note: the pinned post has started misbehaving, so only open polls will be directly linked. closed polls instead have the results page linked in the set header, all the polls are linked from there

Love how Tyddewi/St David's is a city and officially Half as Good as Rome when it has less than a percent of the population of the town where i live. ice cream shop there was good tho.
Oh yeah, their population is like six people and a napkin and they all work at the cathedral part time. Mind you! I believe they have a bug cafe now. They did before the pandemic anyway, apparently the mealworm burger was very good

New:
The Prince and Princess of Wales will on Friday, September 8, visit St David’s Cathedral, on the day they will lead tributes to the late Queen. A year to the day of her passing, William and Kate - who became Prince and Princess of Wales on King Charles’ accession to the throne - will visit communities in south Wales to kick start their autumn plans after the summer break.
Prince William is on the day expected to lead tributes from the royal family, paying homage to the life and legacy of Elizabeth II, he is not expected to speak at the cathedral but the couple will be shown around the ancient church in St David's, the UK’s smallest city.
Royal sources suggested William and Kate chose to be in Wales, as they had only been three times in the last year and the Queen had a unique connection with St David's Cathedral.
William and Kate are also thought to be visiting a coastal site attached to the company Nopla - the winners of last year’s Earthshot prize, the environmental competition set up by Prince William - which make packaging from seaweed and plants.
