Step into the enchanted, magical world of Broadway's modern classic, "Disney's Beauty and the Beast." Showings for the U of D Spring play, High School Musical, have concluded! The play, performed at Marygrove College was shown from February 28th to March 3rd. The student actors and actresses sold out most of the performances and are now recovering from more than a week of strenuous rehearsals following months of prep.

There has been a lot of talk about what the audience took from the show, after all, they are the critics. The student actors from U of D and other schools in the area put a lot of time and effort into the performances and rehearsals leading to the final week, which is why many were absent from school the Monday following the long weekend. Even though the actors and actresses put up with illness, voice fatigue and other stresses, they sang and danced on four straight nights. Maeve Lopus, a junior at Mercy High says that “the performances are what make the long, late, and tiring practices all worth it.” Maeve, who played the role of Gabriella, enjoyed performing with fellow Marlins and Cubs. Luc Baudeloque ‘20, was thrilled to be in show. He exclaimed “it was very interesting and nostalgic being a part of something from my childhood.” He was skeptical at first of the new directing crew, but overall enjoyed it.

The new directors placed some challenges on the cast. The previous director stepped down following last year’s musical, and many student actors were not sure if the program would rise above the adversity. “Through it all we joined together as a community, lifting each other up and utilizing our talents in the best way possible”, stated Courtney Langan, a junior at Mercy. Though some members of the cast were nervous as to how the play would unfold, through hard work and much dedication, they sang and danced in front of more than one thousand people.
